S. Fred Prince, a scientific illustrator and amateur scientist, is a largely unknown artist whose work on the American landscape demonstrates his eligibility to be considered in the lineage of self-taught illustrator-naturalists such as Mark Catesby and Genevieve Jones. In this article, we present a biographical sketch of Prince, as well as a survey of Prince's extant manuscripts, describing their contents and physical characteristics, following personal analysis when possible.

The upsurge of cosmographical and geographical literature can be seen in humanist circles from the 14th century onwards. Beside chorography, the encomium of towns and cities was also a popular genre; some elements of ethnography, natural, economic and political geography were also built into the histography. A century later, this tendency reached Hungary and the social aspiration to presentation of the country appeared in Hungary too. Owing to these factors, chorography of Hungary was written by Miklós Oláh; humanist historians (for instance Antonio Bonfini) also incorporeted geographical digression into their work. Not only descriptions of Hungary, but some geographical descriptions of Transilvania were made in the second half of the 16th century; one of these was written by a 16 th century Viennese humanist polyhistor, Wolfgang Lazius. The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of the three textual variants of the manuscript of the Transylvania-description by Lazius, to explore their relationship to each other, and to establish their order of composition.

In the years immediately preceding the Second World War, the Latin manuscripts of the National Széchényi Museum in Budapest were in the process of being catalogued by Dr Emma Bartoniek. The collection includes a large number of fragments taken from bindings of printed books, and among these fragments is a single bifolium, written in Anglo-Saxon minuscule script of apparent eighth-century date, containing part of Bede's metrical Vita S. Cudbercti (lines 95–128 and 340–75).

The creation and expansion of commercial music printing from around 1500 has normally led to modern editors assigning textual primacy to published copies of music from the period in preference to any equivalent manuscript copies. However, some groups of manuscript sources, such as the Paston collection, from late 16th and early 17th century England, can shed a different light on contemporary music print culture and its relationship to manuscript copying. Edward Paston?s huge private music library, now dispersed in collections in the UK and US, contains many multiple versions of works he already access to in print form, and the choices he or his copyists made with regard to three particular six-voice Latin motets, Byrd?s Memento homo, Ferrabosco?s In monte Oliveti, and Vaet?s Salve Regina, are examined here, and placed within with their collecting context and likely use.

Abstract This contribution documents the record of the late Cretaceous ammonite Placenticeras Meek, 1876, from the late Cenomanian of Texas and the southern part of the U. S. Western Interior up to the late Middle Campanian zone of Baculites scotti, reconstructed and updated from an incomplete manuscript by the late W. A. Cobban based on the collections of the U. S. Geological Survey. The original manuscript dates from the late 1980’s, and there is now additional information on the occurrence of the genus that is incorporate here; much of this comes from Neal Larson of Hill City, South Dakota, to whom I am indebted for his help in preparing Bill’s manuscript for publication. It now provides an objective documentation of the distribution of Placenticeras in space and time on which any subsequent analysis of the evolution of the genus will depend.

This article is devoted to the research of the Book of Psalms manuscript from A. S. Norovʼs book collection stored in the Department of manuscripts of the Russian State Library. The manuscript is written in the beginning of the 18th century in Church Slavonic language Polish letters. This manuscript has never been studied before, it is nonetheless of interest primarily as a Latin-graphic text, which is a transliteration of the originals in Church Slavonic. Very few such texts have survived, and almost all of them were created in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The article provides a complete description of the manuscript and analyses of its language peculiarities. The analysis has made it possible to identify Church Slavonic protographs of the manuscript, and also to establish that the manuscript was written by women (most likely nuns) for private use. Since the authors of the transliteration themselves had very good command of Church Slavonic, it can be assumed that the text was written to order. Against the background of the cultural and historical context of the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries it can be assumed that the manuscript was written by the nuns of one of the southwestern Russian Uniate monasteries who had moved to one of the monasteries in Russia at that time.

The author deals with the miniature from a manuscript containing St. Basil the Great?s ?Asketikon?, written at the end of the fourteenth century (St. Petersburg, National Library of Russia, F.n.I.40). The miniature depicts St. Basil in monk?s attire, writing his text. The compact composition, sharp and tense contours, the dark colouring and the saint?s concentration, create a striking image of monastic virtue and dignity. The manuscript, which originates from one of the monasteries in northeastern Russia, confirms the importance of monastic figures in art in the countries of the Byzantine cultural circle, from the end of the fourteenth century.

Sofia Aleksandrovna Avizhanskaya is known for her research in the field of decorative and applied art of the Bashkirs and the Bashkir collections she collected for the State Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the USSR. However, her contribution to ethnographic science is not limited to this. The proposed publication introduces into scientific circulation Avizhanskaya’s manuscript about the Bashkir wedding, discovered in the Scientific Archives of the Ufa Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the 1956 field diary of Rail Gumerovich Kuzeev. The author supplements these materials with the information contained in Avizhanskaya’s expeditionary report, and highlights their novelty and uniqueness using our own field records of recent years. Archival sources indicate that during joint field research, Kuzeev often served as Avizhanskaya’s translator from Bashkir into Russian, including the story of a wedding, and shared his knowledge of the history and life of the Bashkirs. This helped Avizhanskaya to study the territorial features of the national costume, economic activities, food systems and other areas of the ethnography of the Bashkirs. For her part, she passed on the experience of expeditionary work. A record of the Bashkir “red wedding” made jointly by Avizhanskaya and Kuzeev fills in the source gap in the study of the Bashkir ritual of the mid-20th century. The manuscript presents the local features of the northeastern Bashkirs, preserved traditions, including the institution of “planted parents”, as well as other ethnic and Soviet customs that have penetrated into ritualism.

Latvian theatre director Anna (Asja) Lācis and her life partner, German theatre director and theoretician Bernhard Reich, began their professional careers in Latvia and Germany in the 1920s during the period of European modernism. During the second half of the 20th century, the paths of both their private and professional relationships lead them to the Soviet Union – a place whose ideological system and theatre they remained intertwined with for the rest of their lives. Both artists were then directly affected by Stalinist repressions. In 1948, Anna Lācis returned to Latvia and began working at Valmiera Drama Theatre. In 1951, Bernhard Reich also moved to Latvia, which remained his place of residence until his death. Both internationally recognized artists were buried at the Rainis Cemetery in Riga. This article provides insight into Bernhard Reich’s unpublished manuscript titled Valmieras teātris (Valmiera Theatre), which reveals the left-leaning western artist’s perspective of the history of Valmiera Theatre in the 1950s and the 1960s as well as the art of Socialist Realism that was both surprising and, at the time, unheard of in the history of Latvian theatre.

The manuscript of A. K. Glazunov’s educational fugues (National Library of Russia, F. 187, N 642) is an important document refl ecting the creative ideas of the young composer at the fi nal stage of his musical education (summer 1881). Two elements of the manuscript stand out: rewriting a fragment of one of the fugues from J. S. Bach’s “WellTempered Clavier” and beginning to record the themes in all major and minor keys. Various forms of work – from composing themes to entire compositions — reveal Glazunov’s understanding of J. S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” as a voluminous – both instructive and creative – source.

The surprising thing about ?Das ?lteste Systemprogramm des deutschen Idealismus. Ein handshriftliher Fund,? one of Rosenzweig?s best supported and most carefully detailed texts, is that he almost completely ignores one of the most stunning and mysterious fragments of this brief, two-page manuscript that he discovers in 1914 at the Prussian State Library in Berlin. Not only that: while discussing and justifying in detail every part of this manuscript, attempting to prove that just because it is in Hegel?s handwriting, does not necessarily mean that Hegel is its author, Rosenzweig completely sidelines the famous, completely anarchistic, and radical fragment about the state. My question then is, why does Rosenzweig leave out any argument about Schelling?s understanding of the state? Or more precisely, how have Schelling?s positions on the state been incorporated and transformed in Rosenzweig?s texts? How does Rosenzweig use these fragments? Why does he nowhere thematize Schelling?s thoughts on the state, or what in eine revolution?re Staatslehre Rosenzweig calls Schelling?s revolutionary teachings on the matter?

The memoirs of S. P. Trubetskoy, discovered in the collection of professor I. A. Shlyapkin, are a complete memoir essay devoted to the events of the reign of Alexander I and the interregnum of 1825 and only briefly touching on the period of investigation, trial and exile, that followed the Decembrist uprising. Information about the authorship was lost and was no longer available to the founder of the collection I. A. Shlyapkin. The attribution required special research procedures and handwriting expertise. The manuscript differs significantly from the previously known editions of S. P. Trubetskoy’s memoirs in its structure and, to a large extent, in content. The textual analysis, as well as the study of the chronological indications available in the document, lead to the conclusion about the early origin of the memoir essay, at the same time the manuscript contains signs that it was based on the original version of the memoirs. A comparison of the text of the discovered manuscript and the previously known memoirs of S. P. Trubetskoy, which are a complex of different-time and unfinished manuscripts, shows the complexity of creating the text of the memoirs of this Decembrist.

Slavic Medieval manuscript tradition contains two main groups of Gregory Nazianzen?s orations collections. One group belongs to well-known Greek manuscript tradition. Another group differs from it. It is characteristic of the Slavic manuscripts. This paper deals with the collection of orations from the library of the monastery Decani bearing the signature 92. The manuscript dates to 1351. Its content reveals the affiliation with the Greek tradition which is elaborated in brief. The oration in praise of the Maccabees is analysed in details. It is compared with original text and the differences are noted. Some methodological elements connected with the translation techniques are noted as well. At the end this paper presents the Serbian Slavonic text of the oration.

In literature on Serbian history of philosophy it is quite usual to find a statement that Branislav Petronijevic (1875-1954), professor of philosophy at the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy thwarted the efforts of the philosopher and historian Bozidar Knezevic (1862-1905) to become a professor at the same Faculty. It is said that Petronijevic wrote a negative official review on Knezevic?s book Principles of History. The story fits well with the negative myth of Petronijevic. To establish the facts it is important to take into account the chronology, archival materials, memoirs and other historical sources. When Knezevic applied for the position of a professor of general history at the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy Petronijevic was a 21 years old student at the University of Leipzig (1897). Ljubomir Nedic, then a professor of philosophy at the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy, recommended publishing Knezevic?s first volume of Principles of History (1898). In the meantime Knezevic did not apply for the position of a professor of History of Philosophy and Ethics (February, 1898). Petronijevic did not write an official review on Knezevic?s manuscript, but a review of an already published book (September, 1898). The Principal educational council of the Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Serbia asked Nedic to write an official review of the manuscript of the second volume of Knezevic?s Principle of History (1899). Since Nedic couldn?t accept it, the newly elected professor Petronijevic wrote a review of Knezevic?s new manuscript. Although critical and analytical, the review was positive and the book was published (1901).

The personal archive of Ivan Ivanovich Zarubin (1887-1964) is currently kept in the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOM, RAS) in St. Petersburg. Among the many ethnographic and linguistic notes, there is a Persian manuscript “A Tale of the Mazar s of Kuhistan” ( Hikayat-i Mazarha-i Kuhistan ), which is a guide book to the holy places in both Tajik and Afghan Badakhshan. The work includes some legends and tales attached to the shrines (sing. mazar ) as well as information about the rituals and ceremonial practices performed by pilgrims to the shrines. In this work we publish the Russian translation of the manuscript of “A Tale of the Mazar s of Kuhistan” along with the small number of annotations we felt necessary to provide for a clearer understanding of the text. In addition to the translation, this article provides a philological and ethnographic analysis of the text and of the rituals mentioned in the manuscript. To a certain extent, the text enriches our understanding of the spread of Ismaili beliefs in the mountainous region of Badakhshan...

Yale University, Beinecke Library, 401 contains twenty-six leaves of a ninth-century English manuscript of Aldhelm's De laudibus virginitatis. The manuscript has 189 Old English glosses in ink which were published by A. S. Napier in 1900. Napier also noted the presence of dry-point glosses in the manuscript, and in 1961 H.D. Meritt published twenty-six of these. I have found a total of 160 dry-point glosses and gloss fragments to 153 lemmata in the manuscript, which, other than Meritt's twenty-six, have not been printed before. Dry-point glosses are often neglected in studies of glossing, no doubt due to the difficulty of reading marks scratched into the parchment without ink; I have therefore prefaced my list of glosses and their lemmata with a discussion of dry-point glossing and what it can reveal concerning education in Anglo-Saxon England.

Based on the analysis of the manuscript tradition behind Dusan?s legislation, this prolusion offers arguments in favor of including legal texts copied with Dusan?s Code into a textological examination which aims to reconstruct the history of the Code?s text (the genealogy of its manuscripts) and its original recension. The analysis also includes manuscripts belonging to the so-called incomplete Dusan?s legislation, which contains copies of the accompanying texts without Dusan?s Code itself.

Without the anonymous Lindisfarne Vita S. Cuthberti, written less than two decades after the saint's death in 687, our knowledge of aspects of the Iona-Lindisfarne tradition in the early Northumbrian church and of Cuthbert's life and death would be even more limited than it is. Its medieval tradition is, however, very different from that of Bede's (prose) version of the Life, which, with its greater sense of literary form, composed in superior Latin, and with some additional or better evidence about its hero (although often omitting telling details), effectively drove the earlier work from its land of origin. The Lindisfarne vita's later, post-1100, manuscript testimonies are exclusively in a closely-related group of continental legendaries (passionals); and the one extant pre-1066 English copy was among the books gifted to Saint-Vaast, Arras, c. 1070, by the former abbot of Bath, Sæwold.

The article provides a transcript of the manuscript of the Soviet art historian V. S. Kemenov, an extensive archive of which is kept in the Museum-Estate of V. I. Surikov. Manuscript sheets 1–3 from F. 1, Inv. 1, C. 12 contain materials that allow you to look at the range of scientific interests of the “colossus of international cultural policy" (Fofanov, 2016) from a new point of view. The term “dual engagement” (“the law of dual engagement”) is introduced and analyzed into scientific circulation as a method of searching for an essential connection between the past and the present in a historical picture by artistic means. The issue of actualization of various aspects of the research activity of V. S. Kemenov is considered.

Erlangen Manuscript of the old Serbo-Croatian folk poems is the most comprehensive and the most important collection of our decasyllable epic poems before the appearance of Vuk Karadzic. It was edited by Gerhard Gesemann in 1925 who also wrote an extensive introduction to the manuscript. This paper focuses on the circumstances under which the manuscript was created and the circumstances that brought the manuscript to the University Library in Erlangen. It has been established that it was created in the period when only one person existed who had a capacity thanks his rank to organize extensive work on recording and/or copying 217 poems that the manuscript contains. That person was General Maximilian von Petrasch who was the commander of the fortress Brod (1708-1723). The arguments that support this conclusion can be found primarily in von Petrasch?s biography (he understood ?Slavonic language?, he was well liked by the grenzen, the soldiers on the Military Frontier), but also in some of the poems - firstly, in the one in which his name is mentioned, and secondly, in those poems that celebrate the battles in which Maximilian von Petrasch participated. The Erlangen Manuscript was inherited by Joseph Petrasch, the philologist and the owner of the vast library who signed his collection of poems with the pseudonym Slavonier. After his death, the library, together with the Erlangen Manuscript, first became the property of The Learned Society in Altdorf and then came into the possession of the University Library in Erlangen. The reconstruction of the journey of the Erlangen Manuscript leads to the conclusion that the famous manuscript was created in the region of Slavonski Brod sometime between 1708 and 1723.

Back in 1993, as senior librarian at the Vernadsky Library in Kiev, Ukraine, in charge of cataloguing a newly uncovered Judaica collection, I came across an enigmatic manuscript entitled Sefer ha-ḥeshek. It did not match the bulk of the Judaica holdings. Nor did it fit in Abraham Harkavy's collection of medieval manuscripts. It was too Ashkenazic for Abraham Firkovich's Karaite papers, and too early for most of S. Ansky's nineteenth-century folkloric materials. The manuscript had a wooden cover, separate from the text, with a copper monogram Sefer ha-ḥeshek in Hebrew (hereafter—SH). SH's title appears randomly as a running head; the author occasionally refers to the title of the manuscript. Primarily because of its size—411 folios, 23 of them blank, some 760 filled pages altogether—and due to its magical contents, I discarded any attempts to identify the manuscript as a version of the well-known Sefer ha-ḥeshek, a twenty-or-so-page kabbalistic treatise on the names of the archangel Metatron attributed to Isaac Luria. Also, since the manuscript is not a commentary on the book of Isaiah or Proverbs, it could neither be Solomon Duran's nor Solomon ha-Levi's Ḥ eshek shelomoh.

In his songs from 1865–1882, Dvořák used poems by Czech authors Adolf Heyduk, Eliška Krásnohorská, Karel Jaromír Erben, Serbian folk songs translated by Siegfried Kapper (Czech-German author), Vítězslav Hálek and poems from the Dvůr Králové Manuscript. Most of the texts were probably obtained through Jan Ludevít Procházka, the important figure of Czech cultural life, who initiated Czech song writing for the concerts he organised in Prague. Some of Dvořák’s songs and cycles have survived in fragmentary form (Rozmarýna, s. op. and Like the Moon in the Heavens, No. 12 from Evening Songs, s. op.), some in the two different versions (the song Bouquet from Songs on Words from the Dvůr Králové Manuscript, op. 7). For the purposes of the Simrock edition, the composer arranged the song for the mezzo-soprano Amalie Joachim. Shortly after Dvořák’s establishment of cooperation with the Berlin publisher Simrock, this important publisher released Songs on the Words of Serbian Folk Poetry and four of the Songs on the words from the Dvůr Králové Manuscript. The singer Joachim supported the publishing of these editions, which were also dedicated to her by Dvořák.

In this manuscript we characterize the completeness of a normed space through the strong lacunary ( N θ ) and lacunary statistical convergence ( S θ ) of series. A new characterization of weakly unconditionally Cauchy series through N θ and S θ is obtained. We also relate the summability spaces associated with these summabilities with the strong p-Cesàro convergence summability space.

This paper is to present the discovery, the following publication of this manuscript and the public and scholarly reaction to it. Secondly, it will contemplate Hitler`s thoughts and views on German foreign policy. Finally, it will discuss several theories on why this unfinished manuscript never came to be published until 1961in the first place.

We analyse the importance of the generation of Jesuit pioneer missionaries at the service of the Portuguese Patronage for the implementation of quốc ngữ [ national language] in present-day Vietnam and the linguistic description of the tonology of Annamese or Tonkinese (former names of Vietnamese). We analyse, in particular, the manuscript Manuductio ad Linguam Tunckinensem (ca. 1745 [ ante 1623]) by Francisco de Pina, S. J. (1585/ 1586– 1625), and the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum and the grammatical treatise Linguae Annamiticae seu Tunchinensis Brevis Declaratio (Rome 1651) by Alexandre de Rhodes, S. J. (1593– 1660). We corroborate that Pina was indeed the first to use the Romanization system of Tonkinese, and we establish that he was also the first to describe its six tones in detail. Rhodes expanded Pina’s knowledge, which is particularly explicit in the description of Tonkinese tonology. We also explain that Rhodes used lost manuscript dictionaries written by Gaspar do Amaral, S. J. (1594– 1646) and António Barbosa, S. J. (1594– 1647), which is evident mainly in the use of the “ Portuguese” digraph < nh> to represent the phoneme /ɲ/.

Introduction. The article continues to explore folklore materials recorded by D. S. Bembeev-Salminduring the pre-war years (1935–1942) in the territory of Kalmykia. The collected data, scientific works and biographical documents are currently stored at Kalmyk Scientific Center of the RAS and comprise his personal collection (call no. Ф. 10), the latter numbering a total of 12 items dated 1931–1962. Goals. The study aims at analyzing and introducing a complete manuscript of D. S. Bembeev-Salmin’s folklore survey conducted among residents of Ulan Kheech Sovkhoz (Tsentralny District of Kalmyk Autonomous Oblast) from 1935 to 1942. Materials. The paper examines manuscript documents of D. S. Bembeev-Salmin that contain Kalmyk proverbs and sayings, a word list and notes to the collection. The scholar’s papers are regularly explored by researchers and some of the former’s findings have been published already. The unpublished ones are Oirat triads recorded by D. S. Bembeev-Salmin from shepherds of Ulan Kheech Sovkhoz in 1931. Results and Conclusions. Quite a number of renown scientists have explored and published Kalmyk proverbs and sayings. Such publications comprise translations, interpretations, comments — but fail to provide any essential stories behind the idioms. The more reason why the presented D. S. BembeevSalmin’s notes to proverbs that briefly outline such stories are that interesting.
