Purpose Of the three major streams of research in celebrity endorsements, the “Meaning Transfer Model (MTM)” has received the least attention from researchers. In the present study, the authors aim to investigate the basic components of the “Meaning Transfer Model” proposed by McCracken (1986, 1989) and outcome of the flow of meaning through celebrity endorsements. Design/methodology/approach The authors used an interpretive approach to address four broad research questions framed after a comprehensive literature review. Eight focus group discussions (FGD) (along with embedded word association techniques) were conducted among audience from heterogeneous demographic backgrounds from India. Content and thematic analysis were carried out on the FGD transcripts and the word association test results to generate findings. Findings The findings indicate seven themes of celebrity meaning, namely, personality, credibility, physical appearance, feelings, performance, values and cogent power. Most meanings were found to be transferred to a brand via the endorsement. The possibility of reverse meaning transfer and the change of celebrity meanings overtime were also observed. Research limitations/implications The major contribution of the present study is the development of a measurable and applicable model of meaning transfer in celebrity endorsements, along with a set of testable propositions. Practical implications The findings provide a guiding framework for practitioners who would like to use a celebrity endorsement strategy. Originality/value This is one of the first attempts to develop a comprehensive model of meaning transfer in celebrity endorsements that includes sub-constructs of “meaning” and the moderators in the process.

Practices of using celebrities as spokespeople for commercialized products are continuously favoured toward the effort of marketing and positioning. The popularity of celebrity advertising is founded upon advertiser’s belief on message credibility by well-known personalities to achieve greater attention, recall and behavioural intention among consumers. The present study assesses the impact of celebrity credibility on the underlying purchase intention of Malaysian consumers toward the footwear industry, by exploring the mediating role of attitude toward advertisement between celebrity credibility and purchase intention. The influence of endorser’s characteristics and cultures on consumer’s behavioural intention is explained through the applications of the Theory of Identification (Kelman, 1961, 2006) and the Meaning Transfer Model (McCracken, 1989) in this study. Descriptive findings collected from 200 potential consumers have suggested attitude toward advertisement as the catalyst of endorser’s identification, for cultivating dimensions of celebrity credibility (trustworthiness, expertise and attractiveness) into transactional intention. The phenomenon of integration approaches of single phenomenon, with two theoretical perspectives (Mayer & Sparrowe, 2013) is demonstrated in this product marketplace.

Tidak sedikit usaha milik social media influencer ramai dikunjungi oleh masyarakat pada awal peluncuran, namun usaha yang dijalankan tidak dapat bertahan lebih lama atau bahkan tidak memiliki brand attitude yang lebih baik dibandingkan brand yang di-endorse. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguji meaning transfer model untuk mengetahui perbandingan dari seorang social media influencer sebagai brand endorser dan brand entrepreneur pada pengaruhnya terhadap brand attitude dari kedua marketplace. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui survei kepada 110 responden yaitu followers Arief Muhammad. Hasil penelitian membuktikan Arief Muhammad sebagai social media influencer memiliki kredibilitas untuk memengaruhi brand attitude secara signifikan baik Tokopedia maupun Grebe, namun kredibilitas Arief Muhammad memiliki pengaruh lebih besar kepada brand attitude Tokopedia dibandingkan pengaruh kredibilitasnya terhadap brand attitude Grebe. Keahlian yang dimiliki oleh Arief Muhammad memiliki pengaruh paling besar terhadap brand attitude Tokopedia dan Grebe. Substansi penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi berupa kebaruan studi meaning transfer model untuk dilakukan pada social media influencer untuk menguji pengaruh kredibilitas yang dimiliki baik sebagai brand endorser dan brand entrepreneur.

Purpose The “meaning transfer model (MTM)” is one of the less researched models in celebrity endorsement. The purpose of this paper is to empirically measure and validate a comprehensive model of meaning transfer in celebrity endorsements. Design/methodology/approach Based on a conceptual model of meaning transfer that starts from celebrity identity as an antecedent of perceived celebrity meaning (CM), the study integrates CM, brand meaning (BM) and consumer behavior (CB) and two moderators leading to six studied hypotheses. The model is empirically tested using survey data (of 483 consumers) from India with the application of factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Findings Major results indicate a positive effect of CM on BM and BM on subsequent CB. The moderating effect of consumer knowledge and product involvement in successful meaning transfer is also observed. Research limitations/implications Contribution of the present study lies in the validation of a comprehensive model of meaning transfer in celebrity endorsements that may pave the way to the explanation of previous confounding results. Practical implications The present study provided an actionable model for marketers that would lead to successful meaning transfer and the various factors that need to be controlled. Originality/value This is the first study to validate the MTM that integrates the basic tenets of celebrity endorsement theory.

The purpose of the study was to investigate power structures and interactions among father-daughter and father-son family business decision teams experiencing management transfer. Analytic induction was the methodology used to test the family FIRO theory. Support was found for the theoretical premise of sequential and developmental relationships among the three dimensions (inclusion, control, and integration). The women in the father-son business experienced feelings of exclusion, incidents of higher conflict among family members, which produced less shared meaning, and lower levels of integration among family members. On the other hand, women in the father-daughter business experienced feelings of inclusion, resulting in lower conflict that created high levels of shared meaning, collaboration, and integration among family members. In management transfer consultations, if the entire family business decision team is not included in information gathering, and if the decision team is not observed interacting as a group, with individuals being allowed to confidentially confirm or refute the group interaction data, biased information may be obtained. For more successful adaptations in management transfers, power structures and interactions need to be reconstructed; failure to do so leads to confusion and conflict, resulting in distrust and lack of fellowship within the management decision team.

One of the functions of everyday human language is to communicate meaning. Thus, when one hears or reads the sentence, “John gave a book to Mary,” some aspect of an event concerning the transfer of possession of a book from John to Mary is (hopefully) transmitted. One theoretical approach to language referred to as construction grammar emphasizes this link between sentence structure and meaning in the form of grammatical constructions. The objective of the current research is to (1) outline a functional description of grammatical construction processing based on principles of psycholinguistics, (2) develop a model of how these functions can be implemented in human neurophysiology, and then (3) demonstrate the feasibility of the resulting model in processing languages of typologically diverse natures, that is, English, French, and Japanese. In this context, particular interest will be directed toward the processing of novel compositional structure of relative phrases. The simulation results are discussed in the context of recent neurophysiological studies of language processing.

The melting of paraffin in thermal storage tube-and-shell and combine-and-shell models was conducted with the numerical research aim of decreasing the charge time through changing the shape of the tube into combining form. The results discussed are temperature contour, liquid-solid interface contour, temperature distribution, liquid fraction, and the average Nusselt number. The results show that the charge time in the tube-and-shell model is 2000 s, while the combine-and-shell model is 1200 s, meaning an overall decrease in charge time in the combine-and-shell model by 40% when compared to that of the tube-and-shell model.

In this paper, we explore the utilization of natural language to drive transfer for reinforcement learning (RL). Despite the wide-spread application of deep RL techniques, learning generalized policy representations that work across domains remains a challenging problem. We demonstrate that textual descriptions of environments provide a compact intermediate channel to facilitate effective policy transfer. Specifically, by learning to ground the meaning of text to the dynamics of the environment such as transitions and rewards, an autonomous agent can effectively bootstrap policy learning on a new domain given its description. We employ a model-based RL approach consisting of a differentiable planning module, a model-free component and a factorized state representation to effectively use entity descriptions. Our model outperforms prior work on both transfer and multi-task scenarios in a variety of different environments. For instance, we achieve up to 14% and 11.5% absolute improvement over previously existing models in terms of average and initial rewards, respectively.

The growth within internationalization has changed the world at a rapid pace, with businesses expanding into foreign markets on a daily basis. Similarly, to the growth within internationalization, social media has changed how marketing activities are conducted throughout the world. Influencer marketing has been one of those drivers of growth, changing the way that brands market themselves on a global basis. Therefore, there is a need to understand the relationship between internationalization and influencer marketing but determining the role that internationalization plays in the way that influencer marketing is used within businesses that plan on expanding to new markets. In relation to how traditional marketing tools are adapted through the use of influencer marketing during the internationalization process. For the data collection two interviews were conducted along with one questionnaire with 109 respondents. The study has followed the same structure as can be seen in the frame of reference, according to two main subjects: Internationalization and E-marketing. The findings gathered through the questionnaires showed that credibility was highly valued in relation to that the use of local influencers was preferred to increase trust and credibility between the brand, influencer and their target audience. Along with credibility being more valued by the respondents than an influencer's network size. The findings from the interviews show that the use of influencer marketing is greatly dependent on the needs and preference of the individual market. While one brand preferred a more united front, yet still adapting to the Chinese market in terms of using local influencers and social media platforms. The other brand favored using local influencers in their different markets in order to best reach their consumers. Influencer marketing was used by the two brands to build brand awareness in new markets, through different influencer networks, yet the size of the network was not important for one of the brands, instead it was the connections within the network that were important.

Denna studie handlar om Celebrity Endorsements, det vill säga samarbeten där kändisar borgar för en produkt eller ett företag i syfte att utbyta värden och förhoppningsvis öka försäljningen. Tidigare forskning inom detta område är fokuserat på vad en kändis kan tillföra företaget. Denna uppsats undersöker fenomenet från andra hållet, det vill säga vad företaget gör för kändisen. Vi vill ta reda på om svenskarna, fotbollsspelaren Zlatan Ibrahimovic samt Robin Carlsson, även känd som popartisten Robyn, genom respektive celebrity endorsement-aktion gällande kampanjen “Made By Sweden” med Volvo, övertar värden från företaget. För att applicera våra resultat på existerande teoretiska ramverk och därigenom kunna besvara våra frågeställningar har vi valt att förhålla oss till tidigare forskning om celebrity endorsement, teorier om hur budskap överförs exempelvis Meaning transfer model, samt marknadsteorier om varumärkesidentitet. Genom tre fokusgruppsintervjuer fick vi av respondenterna fram en image av de två utvalda kändisarna som låg till grund för vår analys. Genom att jämföra intervjupersonernas image med företagets profil kunde vi avgöra huruvida värden hade överförts från företaget till kändisen. Vår studie kom fram till att värden inte överförs från företag till kändis. Värdeord inkodade av företaget fanns inte representerade i den image som våra svarspersoner redovisade gällande de två olika kändisarna. Studien visar dock på att en kändis kan få helt nya värden genom en celebrity endorsement- kampanj.
This study regards Celebrity Endorsements, meaning collaborations where celebrities vouch for a product or a company in order to exchange values and hopefully increase sales. Previous research within this field is focused on what a celebrity can provide for the company. This essay examines the phenomena from the other direction, meaning what the company can provide to the celebrity. We want to find out if the swedes, football player Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robin Carlsson, also known as the pop artist Robyn, through separate celebrity endorsement actions regarding the campaign “Made by Sweden” by Volvo, assumes values from the company. In order to apply our results on existing theoretical frameworks and thereby enabling ourselves to answer our questions, we have chosen to relate to previous research regarding celebrity endorsements, theories regarding how messages are transmitted, for instance the Meaning transfer model, as well as marketing theories regarding brand identity. Through three focus group interviews, we received an image of the two celebrities from the respondents, making the foundation for our analysis. Through comparing the image created by the respondents with the profile of the company, we could determine whether values had been transmitted from the company to the celebrity. Our study concluded that values are not transmitted from company to celebrity. Values encoded by the company were not represented in the image pictured by our respondents regarding the celebrities. The study does however show that a celebrity may gain new values through a celebrity endorsement action.

The term equivalence describes the relationship between a translation and the text from which it is translated. Translation is generally viewed as indeterminate insofar as there is no single acceptable translation - but many. Despite this, the rationalist metaphor of translation equivalence prevails. Rationalist approaches view translation as a process in which an original text is analysed to a level of abstraction, then transferred into a second representation from which a translation is generated. At the deepest level of abstraction, representations for analysis and generation are identical and transfer becomes redundant, while at the surface level it is said that surface textual features are transferred directly. Such approaches do not provide a principled explanation of how or why abstraction takes place in translation. They also fail to resolve the dilemma of specifying the depth of transfer appropriate for a given translation task. By focusing on the translator�s role as mediator of communication, equivalence can be understood as the coordination of information about situations and states of mind. A fundamental opposition is posited between the transfer of rule-like or codifiable aspects of equivalence and those non-codifiable aspects in which salient information is coordinated. The Translation Salience model proposes that Transfer and Salience constitute bipolar extremes of a continuum. The model offers a principled account of the translator�s interlingual attunement to multi-placed coordination, proposing that salient information can be accounted for with three primary notions: markedness, implicitness and localness. Chapter Two develops the Translation Salience model. The model is supported with empirical evidence from published translations of Arabic and English texts. Salience is illustrated in Chapter Three through contextualized interpretations associated with various Arabic communication resources (repetition, code switching, agreement, address in relative clauses, and the disambiguation of presentative structures). Measurability of the model is addressed in Chapter Four with reference to emerging computational techniques. Further research is suggested in connection with theme and focus, text type, cohesion and collocation relations.

For decades, animals have been widely used in advertisements, and yet little is known about the effects on consumer reactions along the entire purchase decision process. This study disentangles the effects of using animal stimuli in isolation or jointly with a human model in print advertisements. Empirical evidence is derived from 126,220 consumer evaluations of 302 actual print advertisements across 18 product categories. Animals do not only support a positive attitude change, they also influence how products integrate into consumers´ relevant set and the purchase intention by itself. By comparison, female consumers react more pronounced than their male counterparts on animal stimuli. However, it should be avoided to combine an animal stimulus with a human model to preserve a better influence over consumer reaction.

The aim of this research is to investigate if a celebrity can be a mediator between two brands so that a negative event happening to one brand can spill over to a completely unrelated brand, which shares with the first brand only the celebrity endorser. Even though celebrity endorsement is a popular marketing strategy and celebrities often endorse multiple brands, so far there has not been any systematic study on this topic. Drawing on Associative Network Theory and the Meaning Transfer Model as theoretical framework, this research finds out that negative publicity about a brand can spill over and thereby not only hurt consumers’ attitude toward the celebrity endorser but also toward a second brand that is endorsed by the same celebrity. An unexpected finding is that celebrities can act as a protective shield for brands by weakening the direct impact of negative publicity.

In this qualitative, interpretive, multi-perspective study a new and promising salutogenic imagery approach developed in Germany, called Value-Oriented Imagery (Wertimagination/WIM®) was researched in regard to its applicability in multicultural (non-European) contexts. A second question researched was whether specific cultural or regional “dialects” would be encountered in the universal inner picture language of persons from other (non-European) cultural backgrounds than the one the approach was developed within. A WIM® study with eighteen participants from African South African, Asian South African and European South African cultural backgrounds was conducted in Johannesburg in 2011 and 2012. The results were analysed and compared with WIM® work experiences from Germany. Subsequently the results of the comparison were discussed in three WIM® expert interviews: with Uwe Boeschemeyer, Stephan Peeck and Andreas Boeschemeyer. The main outcome of this research study is that Value-Oriented Imagery can be seen as a rewarding contribution to South African multicultural (logo)therapy/ counselling contexts. Only minor cultural and regional “dialects” occurred in the universal inner symbols of the RSA study participants, such as the occurrence of more water features, especially waterfalls, and more spontaneous, unintended Healthy Inner Child encounters. The present study suggests that work with Value- Oriented Imagery could make a valuable contribution within any cultural and multicultural (logo)therapy/counselling context.

The article discusses the possibilities of how the theories of metaphor from philosophy of language, cognitive linguistics and semiotics can contribute to the studies of the interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge in science. The paper develops a synthetic approach according to which metaphors are analyzed as a conceptual interactions, situated in and complemented by the context of communication. The analysis itself includes a consideration of the interactive theory of metaphor (M. Black), cognitive theories of metaphor (E. McCormack and G. Lakoff), the theory of conceptual integration (M. Turner and J. Fauconnier), the theory of multidimensional metaphor G. Steen, semiotic theories of metaphor (Yu. Lotman and Ch. Peirce) in their modern interpretation. Based on theories of conceptual integration (mixing), communicative and modeling properties of metaphors, the author outlines approaches to conceptual modeling of metaphorical transfer in an interdisciplinary transfer. Its key points are: the formation of a common communication space for interdisciplinary transfer; projections of meanings (knowledge) from conceptual spaces included in communication disciplines into some new semantic space; the formation in this space of a conceptual blend (an unusual composition of meanings) that satisfies certain conditions and contains certain components; activation of the emergent structure of cognitive creative modeling; education on the basis of her efforts of a new semantic meaning (new knowledge). The proposed conceptual model of metaphorical transfer can serve as the basis for its development in the context of studies of interdisciplinary integration.

This chapter examines hidden curricula and pedagogy of digital games in order to clarify their educational meaning and importance. The experiences which players get from the inherent ideology of digital games was categorized into four areas: fantasy, immersion, representation and identification, and making sense of the game’s system or model. These hidden curricula are important for learninggame designers to consider in that they are internalized subconsciously. Also these hidden aspects of games are important for teachers to help motivate players for learning, to facilitate self-directed playing and learning, to improve gender sensitivity, and to help with the transfer of knowledge from games to real life. Games have the magical ability to inspire players through compelling stories, challenges, and activities. The hidden curricula of games are bound to continue to be an issue of great concern for educators in coming years.

This chapter has been focused on how the myths, which have a narrative style by using symbols, have been used in the advertising sector. Based on this scope, “the myth” concept is considered within Jung's archetype and collective unconscious approach. The idea that advertising, just like the myths, is based on symbolic structure and archetypes, is analyzed in terms of “Meaning Transfer Model” and consumer behaviour. In the praxis of this study, to support the relationship between the myth and the commercial, the latter that is in the sample field is thorougly examined under the light of iconographic analysis. The results of the analysis and the praxis show that myths seem to exist in modern-day mass mediums. The myths in the advertising sector that are used to attract attention and to awaken the feelings of the consumer have symbolic narrative structures, which gives way that they're very likely to be used in the advertising.

This article seeks to shed some light on the experience of interpretation and translation from a hermeneutical point of view, more precisely on how the subjectivity of the translator plays an essential mediation role in the process of rendering the meaning of a text in a new language, a role that certainly goes beyond the sole linguistic transfer, without being per se subjective. This idea can best be understood through the concept of “game” as developed by the philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer and introduced in translation theory by Fritz Paepcke, because it offers a model in which the participation of the individual is necessary without being arbitrary, since the players have to abide by the rules of the specific game they are playing – in this case, the text itself. However, the aim of this article is not to offer a method of translation, but is rather an attempt to consider the adequacy of translation on the basis of subjective and intersubjective factors – including the translator’s own prior knowledge and experience, his openness towards the text and his critical self-awareness – and therefore to propose an alternative to the overly normative and restrictive theoretical framework strictly focused on linguistic equivalence between ST and TT.

A finite time thermodynamic model of an absorption chiller was developed. The effects of irreversibilities due to finite rate heat transfer in the heat exchangers are modeled by using the standard UA formulation with the absorber and condenser lumped as one heat exchanger. In order to match experimental data within 20%, the UA of the generator was modeled as a linear function of the heating fluid flow rate. A constant entropy production due to internal processes was included to model reduction in performance at off design conditions. The UA parameters and internal entropy production constant form a set of five fitting parameters with physical meaning. This is fewer parameters than the non-physical curve fit used in the industry standard Energy Plus model. The model was validated within 20% against data sets from two different systems.

Mathematical models of human operator play a very important role in the Human-in-the-Loop manual control system. For several decades, modeling human operator’s dynamic has been an active research area. The traditional classical human operator models are usually developed using the Quasi-linear transfer function method, the optimal control theory method, and so on. The human operator models established by the above methods have deficiencies such as complicated and over parameterized, even for basic control elements. In this paper, based on the characteristics of human brain and behaviour, two kinds of fractional order mathematical models for describing human operator behavior are proposed. Through validation and comparison by the actual data, the best_fit model with smallest root mean squared error (RMSE) is obtained, which has simple structure with only few parameters, and each parameter has definite physical meaning.

A numerical method based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been developed to simulate convective nucleate boiling flows in laminar and turbulent flow regimes. A single set of Navier-Stokes equations is solved based on a staggered finite-volume algorithm on Cartesian grids using Smagorinsky model for sub-grid scale turbulence. A color function is used for the two-phase flow model with a local sharpening scheme [1] to prevent the smearing of the color function, and Brackbill’s Continuum Surface Force (CSF) model [2] is used for the surface tension and the wall adhesion force. A sharp-interface mass-conservative phase change model [3], which can capture the velocity jump accurately, is used for the mass transfer model. A micro-region model developed by Stephan [4] is used to model the mass transfer at the vapor-liquid-solid triple point, and the mass transfer rate and the surface tension force in the micro-region is introduced to the Navier-Stokes solver. The developed scheme is validated against the experiments of convective boiling flows in the horizontal and vertical flow directions [5]. The validation cases considered in this paper are based on a single nucleation site and single bubble growth, in the same approach as Li and Dhir [6], and several assumptions are used for the initial and boundary conditions to complement the limited measured data. Thus, the comparison between the simulation and the experiment may not have the true meaning of validation, but the computed bubble liftoff diameter and time show agreement with experiments under the given conditions, and the applicability of the developed method to the simulation of convective boiling flows is demonstrated.

One dimensional wave-action engine models have become an essential tool within engine development including stages of component selection, understanding system interactions and control strategy development. Simple turbocharger models are seen as a weak link in the accuracy of these simulation tools and advanced models have been proposed to account for phenomena including heat transfer. In order to run within a full engine code, these models are necessarily simple in structure yet are required to describe a highly complex 3D problem. This paper aims to assess the validity of one of the key assumptions in simple heat transfer models, namely, that the heat transfer between the compressor casing and intake air occurs only after the compression process. Initially a sensitivity study was conducted on a simple lumped capacity thermal model of a turbocharger. A new partition parameter was introduced αA, which divides the internal wetted area of the compressor housing into pre and post compression. The sensitivity of heat fluxes to αA was quantified with respect to the sensitivity to turbine inlet temperature (TIT). At low speeds, the TIT was the dominant effect on compressor efficiency whereas at high speed αA had a similar influence to TIT. However, modelling of the conduction within the compressor housing using an additional thermal resistance caused changes in heat flows of less than 10%. Three dimensional CFD analysis was undertaken using a number of cases approximating different values of αA. It was seen that when considering a case similar to αA=0, meaning that heat transfer on the compressor side is considered to occur only after the compression process, significant temperature could build up in the impeller area of the compressor housing, indicating the importance of the pre-compression heat path. The 3D simulation was used to estimate a realistic value for αA which was suggested to be between 0.15 and 0.3. Using a value of this magnitude in the lumped capacitance model showed that at low speed there would be less than 1% point effect on apparent efficiency which would be negligible compared to the 8% point seen as a result of TIT. In contrast, at high speeds, the impact of αA was similar to that of TIT, both leading to approximately 1% point apparent efficiency error.

The objective of the present work is to study what type of effects the dimensionless jet parameters really consider. To do it, three classical dimensionless jet parameters are redeveloped using an unified methodology. This methodology is based on the integral balances of mass and momentum. The momentum balance terms are classified as inertial or pressure terms and as flux or source terms. This redevelopment enlighten the meaning of the dimensionless jet parameters and allows the definition of a new set of parameters. A scaling methodology is presented to compare the dimensionless jet parameters adequacy in scaling center line jet velocity and jet width at different operational conditions. Two regimes are distinguished: low pressure gradient and high pressure gradient. The scaling for low pressure gradient is based on two criteria: the diffusivity ratio proportionality and the linear expansion rate of the jet. The diffusivity is modelled using the Prandtl’s mixing length model and a dimensional analysis based only on inertial momentum terms. The scaling for high pressure gradient is based on jet velocities and widths scaled simultaneously by pressure and inertial momentum terms. The application of this methodology to jet literature data shows jet similarity for low and high pressure gradients. However, some drawbacks are identified in scaling the jet width at high pressure gradients.

Both solar and heat pump heating systems are innovative technologies for sustaining ecological heat generation. They are gaining more and more importance due to the accelerating pace of climate change and the rising cost of limited fossil resources. Against this background, a heating system combining solar thermal collectors, heat pump, stratified thermal storage and water/ice latent heat storage has been investigated. The major advantages of the proposed solar/heat pump heating system are considered to be its flexible application (suitable for new and existing buildings because of acceptable space demand) as well as the improvement of solar fraction (extended solar collector utilisation time, enhanced collector efficiency), i.e. the reduction of electric energy demand for the heat pump. In order to investigate and optimise the heating system, a dynamic system simulation model was developed. On this basis, a fundamental control strategy was derived for the overall coordination of the heating system with particular regard to the performance of the two storage tanks. In a simulation study, a fundamental investigation of the heating system configuration was carried out and optimisation derived for the system control as well as the selection of components and their dimensioning. The influence of different parameters on the system performance was identified, where the collector area and the latent heat storage volume were found to be the predominant parameters for system dimensioning. For a modern one-family house, a solar collector area of 30m2 and a latent heat store volume of 12.5m3 are proposed. In this configuration, the heating system reaches a seasonal performance factor of 4.6, meaning that 78% of the building’s and users’ heat demand are delivered by solar energy. The results show that the solar/heat pump heating system can give an acceptable performance using up-to-date components in a state-of-the-art building.

In this paper, the behavior of an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell is studied by using voltage-current density measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The cell total polarization obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results is shown to be consistent with the area-specific resistance calculated from the voltage-current density curve. An electrolyte-supported solid oxide fuel cell is then used to build an equivalent electrical circuit model using reference electrodes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A four-constant phase element model is proposed to analyze the anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell. The model is used to evaluate an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell under different cell voltages. The individual resistances are also studied as a function of applied voltage, and their physical meaning is explained in terms of reaction mechanisms occurring at the cathode and anode. It is shown that some of the obtained resistances are independent of diffusion while others have both a charge transfer and diffusion component.

A slug flow with phase change in a vertical mini-tube is numerically simulated on the basis of a scheme of continuum mechanics. To formulate two-phase flow, the volume of fluid, VOF, method is employed; the advection of the gas-liquid surface is expressed by the piecewise linear interface calculation, PLIC, scheme, while the effect of surface tension is evaluated by the continuum surface force, CSF, model. Since the treatment of liquid film between a bubble and tube wall is crucially important to properly predict both heat transfer and resulting fluid flow in a mini-tube, a semi-empirical approach based on subsidiary knowledge estimated from a preliminary experiment is newly proposed. Further, an additional numerical procedure is introduced to obtain allowable mass conservation even in the thin-film region with intense evaporation. Consequently, by introducing only one parameter, the physical meaning of which is clear, the bubble behavior is reasonably predicted, and its detailed mechanism is clarified.

Thermal mass flow meters (TMFMs) are most widely used for measuring mass flow rates in the semiconductor industry. A TMFM should have a short response time in order to measure the time-varying flow rate rapidly and accurately. Therefore, it is important to study transient heat transfer phenomena in the senor tube of a TMFM. Many models have been presented by previous investigators. But most of them focused on steady heat transfer phenomena, so it is impossible to analyze transient heat transfer phenomena in the sensor tube using previous models. Furthermore, it is impossible to predict the response time using results from previous research works. In the present work, a simple numerical model for transient heat transfer phenomena of the sensor tube of a TMFM is presented. The proposed model treats the fluid region and the tube region separately. Numerical solutions for the tube and fluid temperatures in a transient state are obtained using the proposed model and compared with experimental results to validate the proposed model. Based on numerical solutions, heat transfer mechanism in a transient state in the sensor tube is explained. A correlation for predicting the response time of a sensor tube is also presented. The functional form of the correlation is obtained using the scale analysis and coefficients appearing in the correlation are obtained by the proposed numerical model. The correlation is verified by experimental results. Using the proposed correlation, physical meaning and characteristics of the response time of the sensor tube are presented.
