The paper discusses the international project entitled Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources, initiated by European researchers. The authors enumerate the reasons for and the aims of the establishment of this online onomasticon; its contents, structure and technical background are revealed; the editorial guidelines are also presented (with special emphasis on explaining the method of crowd-sourcing, documentation and attribution). The paper underlines the significance of the dictionary, as it can be used in different fields (by linguists, sociologists, historians and the general public); then the authors focus on two basic technical issues of editing: the determination of the head forms and the conditions under which a name is considered a variant of another name. The paper accounts for the features of DMNES that are different from those of Hungarian onomasticons; explains the relevance of the dictionary in Hungarian Onomastics; and finally introduces the blog connected to the project.

"Our paper presents the historical formation process of the official Romanian anthroponymic system, established in the first documents of the 11th-14th centuries, written in the language of the administration (medieval Latin). We have noticed the Latinization of written anthroponymic forms, in fact a formal adaptation to the system of the medieval Latin language and onomastics, by the modification in a Latinizing manner of the indigenous onomastic forms in oral circulation. The baptismal names attributed to people identified by their explicit Romanian ethnicity, mentioned in administrative acts written in Latin, differ from popular variants. The transformations undergone by the Romanian anthroponyms had a regular character, in conformity with a graphic code generally used in the language of the administration and the church. The effort to Latinize the names of persons during their administrative or ecclesiastical transcription represents a first attempt to render uniform and even to standardize onomastic variants."

The reviewed two-volume dictionary by Alexander V. Kuznetsov refers to historical onomasticon featuring names (nicknames), patronymics, names of villages attested, in handwritten and published business monuments of the pre-national period and related to the territory of the Russian North. To date, the “Folk Name Book of the Russian North” is the most comprehensive lexicographic volume in terms of the data span, composition, and the source base, which is its main advantage and testifies to the author’s meticulous approach to material collection. The onomastic data introduced by the author have a high value for specialists in onomastics, dialectology, language history, ethnolinguistics, culture and society of late medieval Russia. The dictionary follows a traditional structure: it opens with an introduction that highlights certain issues of historical anthroponymy, provides a brief analysis of lexicographic publications that record names, defines the terminology used in the dictionary, describes the structure of the dictionary entry; then follows the dictionary itself, complete with the lists of sources and annexes. However, similarly to other lexicographic publications, the dictionary is fraught with some errors, inaccuracies in the presentation of onomastic materials, the structure of the dictionary entry, interpretation of the internal form and controversial theoretical statements, all of which are noted in the review.

Medieval studies are big—in fact, have rarely been livelier … or more controversial. This energy has succeeded in breaching the ramparts that traditionally divided the field into a series of vigorously defended fiefs. In a word, the discipline has gone interdisciplinary. Visual literacy, patristics, modal logic, grammar, rhetoric, onomastics, philosophical anthropology, sociology, historiography, linguistics, codicology, vernacular literature, classical and medieval Latin thought and letters, philology, and myriad other subsets conjugate in dizzying and unexpected configurations to produce exciting views of the period.

"The following article will analyze the development of the protagonist of Evgenii Vodolazkin’s novel, Lavr, who is a boy growing up in the author’s imagined, syncretic medieval period, as he undergoes several namings and renamings throughout the course of the plot. During the Russian Middle Ages, one’s name performed a protective and fate-defining role, while also situating its bearer within a framework of familial and religious tradition, thereby strengthening both horizontal ties to other individuals and vertical ties to a divine power. Following Erich Auerbach’s theory of figural interpretation and drawing on folklore, Orthodox chronicles, and onomastic studies, this article will consider the ways in which the main character of the novel is able to subvert the bounds of both space and time through his varied appellations. As the narrative develops, it becomes clear how his names irrevocably link him to his friends, family, historical figures, and ultimately, to the biblical story of salvation. Keywords: name, double names, figural interpretation, salvation, onomastics, etymology, monastic name, baptismal name. "

Philological Findings from the Historical Linguistic Study of Medieval Charters from Szepes County My paper introduces the philological findings derived from the linguistic analy-sis of medieval charters for Szepes County. During the discussion of various fac-tors, my ultimate objective is to find out how the proper name data of the charters may be used for the purposes of research in historical linguistics and onomastics. Although the observations and hypotheses are based on the study of sources from Szepes specifically, I believe that the issues addressed in my paper also carry broader relevance and thus may be used both when interpreting remnants of char-ters and in the process of historical linguistic research based on these. The identification of the island named Hinba, referred to in Adomnán's Life of Columba, has exercised scholarly attention intermittently for hundreds of years. Successfully identifying Hinba would have the potential to enhance our understanding of the geography, politics and culture of western Scotland in the early medieval period. This article analyses Adomnán's references to Hinba and assesses the toponymic, material culture and written evidence pertaining to the islands of western Scotland, to propose Canna as the most likely location. A review of the stone sculpture and archaeological remains on Canna supports the proposition. An inquiry into the probable geographical feature referred to by Adomnán as Muirbolc Már includes a summary of the known instances of the placename element muirbolc in Scotland and Northern Ireland and proposes that it may not, as generally thought, indicate an enclosed bay. The significance of Eigg, where one of Columba's disciples was marooned en route to Hinba, is assessed.

The pagan cult in northern Sweden, i.e, Norrland, has for some decades been a neglected chapter in our history, a situation which unfortunately applies to Sweden as a whole, at least where onomastics are concerned. The aim is thus to deliver an overview of the evidence that we have of pre-Christian religious activities in these northern parts — in this aspect, onomastic material is nearly almost all we have got — and some general remarks about the conversion to the new Christian religion. The area of investigation is what in the (Swedish) medieval period was known as Norrland. In other words, the part of Sweden considered here is modern Central Norrland. With our state of knowledge of today it is not so easy to pick out the place-names that have denoted some kind of pagan cult activity. The place-name material can be divided into: 1. Theoforic place-names 2. place-names denoting the site of a pagan cult, which do not however contain theoforic elements 3. place-names with a possible pagan cultic element.

The Icelandic chieftain Óláfr Hǫskuldsson of Laxdæla saga is the son of an enslaved Irish princess, Melkorka, yet is still judged a candidate to succeed her father as an Irish king. His choice to return to Iceland is validated by his subsequent success as a stockman and community leader. Yet he fails to recognize that the source of his prosperity and material plenty lies in his maternal inheritance, in which Melkorka (‘Smooth-Oat’) may be identified as a Celtic sovereignty figure, the source of his irrecusable election to a rich somatic life and chieftaincy, complemented by the attention of his paternal family’s tutelary spirit or fylgja. By slaughtering his totemic ox, Harri, he calls down the vengeance of the Icelandic tutelary figure representing his father’s family’s fortunes which had concurrently assured his success. Retribution follows later in the saga with the death of his favourite son, Kjartan. From the perspective of the thirteenth century, when Iceland yielded to Norwegian hegemony, the arc of Óláfr’s career is paralleled on a greater scale by Iceland’s early medieval history.

This dissertation examines the approximately 700 anonymous female characters who appear in Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, expanding the possibilities for how gender roles might be interpreted based on a wider range of female roles. Primary named female characters such as Guinevere and Morgan Le Fay perform more stereotypical functions in the text as created and limited by the Arthurian literary tradition, but a significant portion of the nameless female characters challenge these assumptions. Malory uses many of these anonymous women to perform actions which are often attributed to male characters in medieval literature, such as acting as a guide or helper on a quest, challenging gender roles by assigning more active roles to these secondary characters. However, the very anonymity of the women help negate examples of potentially dangerous female agency by downplaying their presence in the text, removing a sense of individuality by creating nameless, faceless female characters who more easily fade into the background by refusing to identify them. This helps reassert patriarchal concerns both by focusing the reader's attention on the male characters' actions and by partially glossing over the female characters' contributions to the text. In order to address such a significant number of characters, this dissertation is divided into two parts. The first section is an analysis of Malory's text, examining the implications of using the anonymous female characters as a more significant factor in examinations of Le Morte. While current scholarship does address gender concerns to some extent, this generally focuses on those primary female characters who align more readily with stereotypical gender roles. I examine how gender assumptions can be undermined when the anonymous women are included as part of an analysis, as well as how they can affect such concerns as threatening or preserving the masculinity of the male characters based on the functions the female characters perform. I also explore medieval naming customs, or onomastics, and how cultural practices might have influenced Malory's text. This includes analyzing how Malory uses various forms of anonymity. How he refers to individual characters, such as through a vocational reference, gives the reader some insight into the character's function and portrayal. The second section of this dissertation consists of indexing the approximately 700 female characters according to Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature. Because the number of episodes these women are in comprise 44% of the total text , Thompson's Motif-Index offers a systematic approach for dealing with such a significant number of characters. It provides a method for classifying specific actions in Le Morte according to common themes, as well as identifying how these motifs are used by Malory in non-traditional ways. Since many of his anonymous female characters perform stereotypically male roles, the motifs offer a way to quickly identify areas of future interest for scholarship. My own Index sorts the motifs based on forms of anonymity Malory uses to identify his characters. This allows the reader to compare how he portrays women within the same category, such as female relatives or helpers. While this project is necessarily limited, my Index offers a starting point for future study by allowing for an easy identification and comparison of the anonymous female characters in Malory's text.

Beowulf is preserved in a single manuscript written out around the year 1000, but there are many reasons to believe that the poem was composed several centuries before this particular act of manual reproduction. Most significantly, the meter of Beowulf reveals that the poet regularly observed distinctions of etymological length that became phonologically indistinct before 725 in Mercia. This dissertation gauges the explanatory power of the hypothesis that Beowulf was composed about three centuries before the production of the extant manuscript. The following studies test the hypothesis of archaic composition by determining whether it is able to accommodate independent forms of evidence drawn from the fields of linguistics, textual criticism, and literary history.

As vectors of narrative material, proper names ai·e the first clues to the fact that a work belongs to a fictional world. They determine a horizon of expectation, create in the reader the memory of previous stories, from bath oral and written traditions. If its manuscript witnesses and old editions call it Artus le Restoré or Le Petit Artus de Bretaigne, and if modem critic gives it the title Artus de Bretagne, it is because the late navel ( circa 1300) examined here daims to belong to the Arthurian universe because of names like Arthur, Lancelot and Gauvain. But it is neve1iheless a real fake out : it appears on reading the navel that the characters from the Aiihurian universe do not constitute its main concem, while a variety of anthroponyms and toponyms circulates in the text and announces the presence of other subjects. The proper name therefore o:ffers a rich field of investigation for grasping the poetics of the late Arthurian novel. The latter, far from being limited to a single subject, tradition or influence, deconstructs the borders of fiction, plays on the discrepancies and the limits of reality and organizes a geography that traces ultimately porous borders between each fictional world. These are the particulaii.ties that our thesis explores through the analysis of the di:ff erent modalities of the proper name, its conditions of appearance, and its consequences on the poetics of the navel

This book is a ground-breaking study of the phenomenon of migration in and to England over the medieval millennium, between c. AD 500 and c. AD 1500. It reaches across traditional scholarly divides, both disciplinary and chronological, to investigate, for the first time, the different types of data and scholarly methods that reveal evidence of migration and mobility within the medieval kingdom of England. England offers the opportunity for studying migration and migrants over the longue durée, because it has been a recognisable political unit for over a millennium and because a wealth of source material has survived from these centuries. The data vary unevenly in quality and quantity across this period, but become considerably more powerful through multi-disciplinary approaches to data collection and interpretation. Fifteen subject specialists synthesise and extend recent research in a wide range of disciplines, including archaeology, art history, genetics, historical linguistics, history, literature and onomastics. They evaluate the capacity of different genres of evidence for addressing questions around migration and its effects on the identities of groups and individuals within medieval England, as well as methodological parameters and future research potential. The book therefore marks an important contribution to medieval studies, and to modern debates on migration and the free movement of people, arguing that migration in the modern world, and its reverberations, cannot be completely understood without taking a broad historical perspective on the topic.

This chapter examines the extent to which given names (birth names) and second names (bynames and hereditary surnames) can reliably indicate the origins or ethnicity of individual migrants between the ninth and the fifteen centuries, and how such names may be used en masse to reveal migration patterns, whether they reflect military conquest, international trade or population movements within England itself. Particular attention is given to the names of Vikings, Normans, Flemings and Jews, among others, and to questions of social class and gender. A central theme is the sometimes complex, ambiguous or incomplete nature of the data and the need for a discriminating methodology in which onomastics(the study of names),historical linguistics and prosopography (the collective study of individuals’ lives) are seen as complementary disciplines, acting as checks and balances on each other’s conclusions.

While the socio-political and judicial role and importance of assemblies in Viking Age and medieval Norway has been discussed by generations of historians, the physical aspects of assembly sites and their precise locations has, until recently, been an under-researched topic. Very few assembly sites have been identified. Focusing on Western Norway, this chapter discusses approaches to identifying such sites. It is argued that while archaeology offers great potential for future studies in this field, a multi-disciplinary approach to the locating of sites from Viking and medieval times is preferable. By combining information from historical records and onomastic material, eighty-three documented probable or possible sites have been identified, thus significantly augmenting the number of known thing sites within the research area.

This paper analyzes medieval onomastics in the Romanian historical province of Transylvania (11th–14th centuries), a multicultural area, corresponding to the ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity of the population. The different ethnic communities are ruled by a unique administrative authority, but the multicultural environment exercises a major influence on the personal names of each ethnic group by distinguishing the names according to several aspects: ethnic criteria, the manifestation of unilateral or reciprocal onomastic influences, the adaptation of borrowed names to the specificity of each language and the alteration of the popular names in use in written variants, established as officially Latinized forms.

The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of source criticism in etymological research. It is widely known that the main sources for the early history of toponyms in the Carpathian Basin are the charters created in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, because these official documents contained a large number of vernacular proper names embedded in the Latin text. However, it is important to mention that the medieval charters were produced by the chancery and places of authentication along specific principles and needs. I argue that this circumstance must always be considered during the interpretation of the data. I will show some examples illustrating that – in certain cases – we have to take into account the nature of the sources in the reconstruction of the genesis of place names. My goal is to offer a brief outline of this issue through my own investigations.

The paper discusses how multiculturalism is realized in the present-day onomastic landscape when hotels, hostels and lodgings for tourists are named in the downtown of Hungary’s capital. Based on names collected from online maps and popular websites offering accommodation, the author explores some characteristic features of these urban names (e.g. the frequent use of peculiar generic terms and the presence of additional components in the name forms referring to hotel chains, themes or services). Special attention is paid to semantics (e.g. specifiers indicating the location, the surroundings, an architectural feature of the building; the style of the interior design; the owner of the establishment) and language origin. The observed names belong to different cultural layers, providing references, for instance, to medieval sign boards, 19th-century monarchic and Hungarian national values as well as images of modern globalization.

This study analyses the names of places and people of diverse origins collected from the documents which outline the territory from the mouth of the river Ebro (running into the sea) in Catalonia, and the adjacent part of the Aragon strip. These place names and anthroponyms are based on Latin onomastics, influenced by the Arabization of the Iberian Peninsula which occurred in the eighth century and the subsequent cultural and linguistic Catalanization. It is possible to observe that the primitive Latin element is evident in names of Mozarabic origin, and that there are many Arab, and some Hebrew elements, which are the result of the presence of these two cultures during the Middle Ages in our territory. The Catalan element – which makes up the majority – comes from the medieval Christian repopulation carried out during the reign of Count Ramon Berenguer IV in the mid-twelfth century. It should be noted that, with Catalan, some elements of the pre-Roman substrate and Germanic superstrate were also introduced into the proper names.

The Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows in the world, with numerous audiences since it has been translated into many languages. Like any other such show, the reactions to it function like mirrors of contemporary themes and obsessions. As with most aspects of culture today, ideologues of all types – Marxists, conservatives, traditionalists, Critical Race Theory activists, intersectionalists, feminists, and others – always try to use such widely popular shows to illustrate their ideas and push their agendas. Some aspects of Songs of Ice and Fire have triggered debates on the issue of its characters as being not diverse enough, and thus showing how George R. R. Martin wrote a rather non-progressive book. This paper focuses on the names the author chose for his characters, and argues that the choice of names in the show is due to a wish of the author to evoke important world cultures, to have a sonority that matches the characters’ personalities, and to be both archaic and memorable. I have called such a view a non-ideological and symbolic one, and I think that viewers identify with the characters in the film due to their likes and dislikes, and not according to any kind of ideological claims. Nevertheless, these names can also be considered to be a good illustration of diversity – of ethnic, cultural, and racial background. For such a demonstration the study concentrates on the names of a few of the main characters, trying to come up with possible etymologies (as we know that Martin looked into such names of Medieval England) which are correct from a historical linguistic point of view, but which also can be interpreted as symbolic and have a rich connotation within the literary text.
