The Antarctic Ice Sheet is a vast and remote hostile land. It is nonetheless an important part of the planetary climate system. Space-borne instruments are among the best tools to study the evolution of the ice sheet. In this work, we use data from one of these space sensors: the Envisat radar altimeter. This instrument provided us repeated measurements of the ice sheet surface elevation every 35 days during 8 years. From this dataset, we investigated volume change of the ice sheet between 2002 and 2010. This period is relatively short compared to the typical duration of ice sheet response (thousands of years after an ice age) but the data show some evolution, either extreme precipitation events or accelerated flow and associated thinning. The high space and time resolution also allowed us to observe rapid and local events such as subglacial lake drainages. These were only recently discovered in Antarctica and altimetry is one of the best suited tools to study them. The reflection and backscatter of the radar wave by the snowpack is still a complex problem that has to be further investigated. The own behavior of the snowpack must be better understood. We present the state of the art of the understanding of the radar/snowpack interaction. We conclude with an outlook on future techniques that will enhance our understanding of the ice sheet process and ice sheet evolution: new altimeters, longer time series, multi-sensor studies and additional in situ calibration

Satellite altimetry has recently reached an unprecedented level of accuracy and coverage. Although altimeters were originally designed to observe the oceans and have improved our understanding of their large-scale dynamics, the exploitation in coastal areas remains a challenge. One of the challenges of coastal altimetry remains the lack of precision in geophysical corrections, which are essential to compute accurate sea level anomalies near the coast. The main objective of this thesis is to develop new methodologies based on mobile sea level GNSS measurements and hydrodynamic modelling in order to better exploit altimetry measurements in coastal environments and to prepare the arrival of future missions. During a campaign carried out with the PAMELi marine drone in July 2020 in the Pertuis Charentais, a sea-level cartography was carried out along a pre-programmed route. In a first study, this cartography is used to assess a tidal model under an altimetric pass, and thus demonstrate the potential of a drone to extend spatially our validation capabilities. Then, the same dataset is used to estimate the geoid slopes in the region, by combining in-situ measurements and the hydrodynamic model. We show that the use of our model to correct the dynamic topography gradients improves drastically the coherence and the accuracy of geoid slopes. These two studies exploit a methodology based on crossover height differences, and offer perspectives on the use of autonomous platforms in the context of the future SWOT mission. In a last chapter, a coastline prediction method based on the use of a DEM and the hydrodynamic model is presented, and applied to Sentinel-3A passages in order to evaluate the impact of intertidal areas on altimeter measurements. This overall thesis work provides methodological insights for a better understanding and exploitation of altimetry measurements in coastal environments, and will help to prepare the scientific exploitation of the future SWOT mission

This thesis investigates the links between electro-physiological responses of the cochlea and the brainstem, the psychoacoustic levels used for CI fitting and the hearing performances of MED-EL® cochlear implant (CI) adult users. The main part focused on the electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAP), which reflect the synchronous activity of cochlear auditory neurons in response to the electrical stimulation delivered by CI. These were recorded either during implantation surgery or in experienced users to evaluate their usefulness as predictors of the hearing levels. Our work shows that despite broad variations between users, ECAPs can be related to perception levels. This relationship does not allow yet an accurate enough prediction of the perception levels used to program the CI.In MED-EL® CIs impedances raw data are displayed in voltage matrices and can be used to estimate the spread of current around each electrode, at the bioelectric interface level. In a second part, we aimed to evaluate the relationshipss between the current spread and speech recognition. The results indicate that speech understanding does not seem to be related to this measurement of intra-cochlear current diffusion. The last part of this thesis evaluated the relationship between an electro-physiological measurement of binaural interaction (BIC) and binaural hearing performances in subjects using two CI. Our results suggest that subjects with identifiable BICs appear to have better localization scores and make a better benefit from the binaurality as they have to understand speech in noisy environment
Lavaud, Laura. "The contributions of short waves to storm surges in coastal zones." Thesis, La Rochelle, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022LAROS007.
Storm surges and associated coastal flooding can result in major catastrophes. Storm surges correspond to a temporary rise in sea level driven by atmospheric pressure gradients, wind and short waves. In particular, the dissipation of short waves in the nearshore drives a mean water level increase, the wave setup, which contributes to storm surges. This PhD thesis examines the contributions of short waves to storm surges, notably the wave setup, in contrasting coastal environments. To that end, the analysis of field data is combined with high-resolution numerical modelling. First, this work investigates the contribution to storm surges of very large storm waves breaking at the inlet of two wave-sheltered environments. The results indicate that the resulting wave setup contributes up to 40% and 23% to the storm surge peak in the Adour Estuary and the Arcachon Lagoon respectively. Second, the dissipation of storm waves and the resulting depth-varying circulation are analysed at a rock shore platform. Two counteracting effects of the high bottom roughness on the wave setup are identified: (1) waves suffer a strong dissipation by bottom friction, which reduces the wave setup compared to a smooth bottom; (2) the wave-induced circulation over a rough bottom enhances the wave setup. Lastly, waves and wave setup dynamics are investigated on a salt marsh. During the studied wind sea event, the halophytic vegetation of the salt marsh accounts for 65% of the wave dissipation, which reduces the wave setup compared to a case without vegetation. New field measurements on salt marshes are needed to explore the effect of wave non-linearities on the wave setup in vegetation fields

The modeling of the combinations of flood hazard phenomena is a current issue for the scientific community which is primarily interested in urban and nuclear sites. Indeed, it is very likely that the deterministic approach exploring several scenarios has certain limits because these deterministic scenarios ensure an often excessive conservatism. Probabilistic approaches provide additional precision by relying on statistics and probabilities to complement deterministic approaches. These probabilistic approaches aim to identify and combine many possible hazard scenarios to cover many possible sources of risk. The Probabilistic Flood Hazard Assessment (PFHA) proposed in this thesis allows to characterize a quantity(ies) of interest (water level, volume, duration of immersion, ect.) at different points of interest of a site based on the distributions of the different phenomena of the flood hazard as well as the characteristics of the site. The main steps of the PFHA are: i) screening of the possible phenomena (rainfall, sea level, waves, ect.), ii) identification and probabilization of the parameters representative of the selected flood phenomena, iii) propagation of these phenomena from their sources to the point of interest on the site, iv) construction of hazard curves by aggregating the contributions of the flood phenomena. Uncertainties are an important topic of the thesis insofar as they will be taken into account in all the steps of the probabilistic approach. The work of this thesis is based on the study of the conjunction of rain and sea level and provide a new method for taking into account the temporal phase shift between the phenomena (coincidence). An aggregation model has been developed to combine the contributions of different flood phenomena. The question of uncertainties has been studied and a method based on the theory of belief functions has been used because it has various advantages (faithful modeling in cases of total ignorance and lack of information, possibility to combine information of different origins and natures, ect.). The proposed methodology is applied on the site of Le Havre in France
