LIttle Is known about the conservation status and geographic range of beaked whales. This note provides the first record of a Blainville's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon densirostris in Fijian waters, and contributes to the available knowledge of a species poorly known in the South Pacific region. On 11 November 2003, a female beaked whale stranded near Viti Levu, Fiji. A lack of suitable references and unfamiliarity with diagnostic morphological characters inhibited species identification at the time of stranding. However, we were able to identify this specimen by using molecular genetic information and applying a diagnostic character approach. DNA sequences from the unknown specimen exhibited nucleotide character states that unambiguously identified it as a Blainville's Beaked Whale. Unfortunately, a lack of associated data collected in this particular event emphasizes a common situation around the world: untrained or poorly equipped personnel (municipalities, governmental agencies or local residents) must manage stranded marine mammals out of necessity. However, information from these events or opportunistic beach surveys assists In furthering research of conservation status and management needs.

Stomach contents were analysed from three species of beaked whales which mass-stranded shortly after a naval exercise conducted in the Canary Islands in September 2002. Animals from such mass strandings often contain freshly ingested food in their stomachs and can provide a more reliable guide to feeding habits than other strandings. Food remains recovered from seven Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) consisted mainly of oceanic cephalopods, the most numerous being Taonius pavo, Histioteuthis sp., Mastigoteuthis schmidti and Octopoteuthis sicula. Many of the cephalopod species found in the diet appear to undertake daily vertical migrations, being found in shallower waters during the night and moving to deeper waters during the day. Single specimens of Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) and Gervais' beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus) had eaten both fish and cephalopod prey. The most numerous prey remains belonged to gadid fish and viperfish (Chauliodus sp.) respectively. These results are consistent with the limited published data on diet in these species, with Mesoplodon species having a relatively higher proportion of fish in the diet whereas Ziphius specialises on cephalopods.

Quantifying population demographics is necessary to analyse the status of wildlife populations and to support effective conservation and management. Such a need exists for beaked whales which are vulnerable to anthropogenic noise, including navy sonar. Here, population demographics were estimated for Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) in The Bahamas and the potential population-level effects of sonar investigated. Mark-recapture models were fitted to photo-identification data collected at the US Navy's Atlantic Test and Evaluation Centre (AUTEC) where sonars were used regularly and 170 km away at Abaco where sonar use was limited, with the exception of a navy exercise correlated with a stranding of beaked whales in 2000. Life history data collected from 1997-2011 revealed that onset of sexual maturity occurred at age nine for both males and females and minimum longevities were 23 years. The annual turnover of individuals at Abaco was supported by the estimation of a larger parent population. However, adult females showed high site fidelity and survival, while adult males' occupancy patterns were different, making survival of males difficult to separate from permanent emigration. Average annual abundance was lower at AUTEC when compared to a same-sized area at Abaco. Despite a similar number of adult females at both sites, a higher female:calf ratio was found at AUTEC, suggesting lower recruitment through births may have contributed to lower abundance. Population demographics in Abaco changed after the 2000 stranding; abundance and temporary emigration increased then returned to pre-2000 levels remaining stable thereafter. Two stranded whales re-floated in 2000 were later re-sighted having survived exposure to sonar and the physiological stresses related to stranding. This work provides evidence of a possible population-level effect of sonar use at a navy range and during a multi-ship exercise, emphasising the valuable role that longitudinal studies play in monitoring impacts of anthropogenic activities.

Lack of knowledge regarding beaked whale biology restricts our ability to evaluate their vulnerability to anthropogenic threats. This work addresses critical data gaps in Blainville's beaked whale social structure and communication systems. Social analysis shows that Blainville's beaked whales in the Bahamas exhibit group living through a harem structure characterised by a single male accompanying a group of females for up to a year. This study also reveals that females preferentially associate with conspecifics in the same reproductive state, remaining together for up to three years. I show what may be the first example of social philopatry in beaked whales, with adult males possibly providing protection for kin. Analysis of data from acoustic tags reveals previously undescribed sexually distinctive vocalisations. These sounds might serve a communicative function helping to form and maintain groups. Acoustic data also reveals a distinctive double click pattern in Blainville's beaked whales that is likely physiological in nature. The same pattern is also shown in two other deep diving species, Cuvier's beaked whales and sperm whales. Species differences in the frequency of production of these double clicks may be providing a window into the evolution of odontocete echolocation. Data from a bottom-mounted hydrophone array reveals a lack of sex and / or age specific information in this species' echolocation clicks. Analysis of mother-calf pairs indicate calves from at least three months of age echolocate using clicks similar to those of adults. This work provides the first comprehensive study of possible communicative sounds in an elusive deep-diving cetacean species exhibiting a complex social structure that lies somewhere between stable groups and fission-fusion societies. Understanding the interaction between communication and social organisation enhances our ability to predict the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on this species.

Deep-diving mammals evolve within a tri-dimensional environment where the physical and biological conditions vary. These variations can influence their utilization of the vertical dimension. This Ph.D. thesis focuses, first, on acoustic signal analysis, the signal being sampled by a miniaturized echo-sounder deployed on southern elephant seals, and aims at biologically describing the water column. Through that acoustic signal, mid-trophic level organisms have been observed, as well as important particle export. Second, to determine the influence of dynamic environmental variables, such as temperature or salinity, on the vertical position of elephant seals and Blainville’s beaked whales, we proposed a new methodology suitable for using environmental predictors described in the form of profiles by using functional analysis approaches. When using the variables obtained in situ by elephant seals, we show that the environmental profiles influence the depth of the dives. However, the model tends to underestimate the predicted depth of animals, mainly in areas where high oceanic dynamics are observed. When using the same approach on the restricted beaked whales’ dataset, and by using environmental variables obtained from oceanographic models, we did not observe any impact of the environmental conditions on the whales’ water column use. This methodological approach could allow the integration of the vertical dimension toward the development of tri-dimensional habitat modelling under the conditions that the spatial and temporal resolutions of the dataset are adequate
