Tunneling in urban areas has grown considerably in recent decades, with increasingly ambitious projects. One of the major challenges for engineers is to ensure both safety during the construction work and its surrounding in an increasingly complex context. Engineers seek to improve their calculation models of the underground structure, beyond the three-dimensional and highly non-linear aspects, most take into account the behavior of the support structure elements, which mainly consist of segments forming the ring of the tunnels by mechanical assembly within them. In certain cases, knowing the detailed behavior of the joints connecting the segments is essential, as it can substantially influence the calculation methods. The framework of this thesis is in line with the objective of better understanding and proposing improvements to the calculation tools for tunnel lining with segmental rings. The first objective of this work is to evaluate the reliability of existing approaches in the current literature with regards to the influence of joints in the tunnel structure. The second objective is to propose practical numerical modeling for the joint with a behavioral law that takes into account all the non-linearities of the material and geometrical parameters that influence the joint behavior.A comparative numerical study of the existing methods is done and introduced in the literature review. Based on the data gathered from the study, it has been noted that the different methods generally work well, but on condition that they can be calibrated to data which is sometimes unavailable. Therefore, a limitation of the existing methods is observed, hence the need to describe the joint behavior in the most relevant way according to geometry and joint characteristics. The second objective is to propose a three-dimensional finite element model capable of taking into account the complex local behavior of the joints through a global approach, based on four-point bending tests of two segments and a longitudinal joint. A parametric study has been done on this model to study the influence of parameters related to material non-linearities and interface geometry on the joint behavior. A non-linear longitudinal joint behavior law (Moment versus rotation) is proposed and validated with experimental tests. The calculations are also extended to the non-linear behavior of concrete, taking into account the plasticity and damage on the concrete. The last part aims at providing a practical approach to model the longitudinal joint macro-element by one-dimensional finite element. This simplified method takes into account the complex local behavior, including the non-linearities of the material and geometrical parameters that influence the joint behavior (number of bolts, the thickness of the segment, loading, damage and joint resistance...) through a global approach. The reliability of the proposed model was confirmed by good correspondence between the simulation results experimental tests

Environmental performances of products largely influence performances of systems. Moreover, systems have still an untapped energy-saving potential concerning environmental performances at system level rather than at the level of the individual products of which they are composed. The objective of this work is to propose an approach to deal with energy performance assessments at system level considering information/data from European product policies (Ecodesign, Energy Labels, Green Public Procurement and EU Ecolabel). The hypothesis here is that environmental product policies, that have been very useful in facilitating a homogeneous rating scheme in the EU market for individual products, can also be advantageously used in a method to assess the energy performance of systems. This research work proposes a simplified method for supporting the design of good performing heating systems using data from EU product policies, which is available during the design stage. Firstly, a system modelling with a top-down approach is used so that system aspects (geographical conditions, building characteristics, etc.) are regarded. Secondly, the system energy performance is calculated from a bottom-up approach so that, from the performance of the products and sub-systems composing the system. The method has 5 steps divided in two main phases: diagnostic of the initial system and improvement. The method is supported by an original calculation tool which determines the energy parameters (energy demand, energy losses, energy consumption and low-emission energy efficiency) at system level using performance figures from EU product policies. It helps assessing how good a heating system is by setting worst, benchmark and best possible systems. The method is flexible, and allows different product configurations to be assessed and can hence support the design activities of heating systems. The method is tested on a real case study, the re-design of existing heating systems of a dwelling in north Italy, including a solar hot water system and a space heating system. The case study demonstrates the potential of improvement of the heating systems based on the results produced by the method, by helping selecting products currently available in the market. In addition, based on the assessment, several improved design alternatives can be proposed combining different performances of the products which compose the heating systems. The dissertation also analyses the evolution of the different approaches of EU product policies (product, extended product and system). In particular, the package concept set in the energy labelling regulations of heating systems is studied in detail. The package label of Regulation 811/2013 is implemented on the same prior case study so that results can be compared with the ones of previous sections. It is shown that the package concept can also support decisions made in the building design phase especially in the choice of appropriate components based on estimation of system performances. In addition, the peer-reviewed paper analyses the link of building-related product policies with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, and it is concluded that they should be somehow better aligned

The incremental sheet forming (ISF) is an innovative process in sheet metal forming method by using a hemispherical rigid tool controlled by Computerized Numerical Control machine (CNC). The clamped sheet is locally deformed following a tool path, defining thus the final geometry of the part. The advantages of this method are its high flexibility, its low tooling cost, and its ability to shorten the design and manufacturing chain. The application of the reduction of the overall costs, and development time made the numerical simulation essential. Many robust simulation models based on the finite element method enable to predict the formability and the geometrical quality of the part. Classic algorithms of simulation ensure reliable quality results but necessary computation times (CPU) are still very long. In this context, a Simplified Approach has been developed to reduce the computation time. This approach allows avoiding the integration of the tool and its contact with the sheet into the numerical simulation, by replacing them with a local and progressive displacement imposition of certain nodes supposed to be in contact with the tool. A complementary solution is proposed within this thesis to reduce the CPU times of a simulation sequence, by using a shell element called DKTRF (Discrete Kirchhoff Triangle Rotation Free). This element takes account of the membrane and bending effects with restricted numbers of degrees of freedom, as the flexion terms are defined in accordance with the nodal translational displacements of the adjacent elements. The integration of this element combined with the Simplified Approach for a regular mesh in an elastoplastic problem gives consistent outcomes in geometric and behavioural, with significant diminution of CPU times in comparison with the industrial numerical simulation performed on ABAQUS©. Results obtained by means of numerical simulation of a study case are then compared with experimental results, thereby enabling to validate the model and to study the influences of process parameters on the final piece. To do this, an experimental test procedure is developed in order to evaluate the efficiency of incremental forming process on a Computerized Numerical Control machine (CNC). The measurement technique used to characterize the geometry (thickness and profile) of the piece is the scanning method. The measurement tool, transcribed accurately the geometry of the part via cameras and post-treatment software. Particularly well-suited for the assessment of the profile, the acquisition method remains to be optimize especially for assessing the thickness of the sheet

Scenario studies of an electronuclear fleet, as well as safety studies, are essential to explore the different nuclear strategies of the future. To carry out these studies, it is necessary to estimate the irradiation time of a given fuel and its composition during the electricity production campaign. These estimates are based on the simulations of nuclear reactors, for which the calculations of the evolution must be as representative as possible. The calculation schemes usually used are divided into two stages: a cell calculation to solve the neutron transport equation (deterministic or Monte Carlo simulation) followed by a core calculation (deterministic code) The cell calculation is a simulation of the evolution of an assembly under infinite conditions. Based upon this calculation, homogenized and condensed cross-sections along with scattering quantities are calculated as input data for the next stage, the core calculation. The cell calculation is therefore a fundamental step and must be representative of a core assembly evolution as much as possible. However, the approximations used for this model are numerous, especially the neutron leakages are neglected. The objectives of this work is to study the physical effects of neutron leakage and to compute the associated biases compared to an infinite assembly simulation. In the first part, the problem of axial neutron leakage will be broached. In this case, neutron leakage causes a strong variation of the neutron spectrum in the last centimeters of the assembly as well as a smaller variation but over the entire assembly. The second part deals with the radial leakage. The effect of the neighboring assemblies and the particular behavior of the assemblies in the peripheral position are studied. Moreover, the isotopic composition biases at the end of the cycle are quantified. In the third and last part, a simplified calculation of the evolution of a reactor enables to visualize all the observed physical effects impacting the evolution of the irradiation. Several other approximations of the cell calculation are still to be investigated, such as the reactivity monitoring through the concentration of thermal neutron poison dissolved in the moderator or present in the fuel. Nonetheless, establishing of the physical phenomena taken into account for the cell calculation represents an essential first step towards an improvement of the cell calculation and may lead to new simulation methods for reactor cores. In the future, the quantification of the biases related to neutron leakage will be used to estimate the uncertainties on the isotopic composition of the fuel at the end of the cycle. These uncertainties, propagated into the scenarios studies, will assess the validity of the obtained results
