In this politically charged times, the plight of Mexican immigrants have been incorrectly characterized and ridiculed. In the eyes of many North Americans, Mexico is above all a country of immigration from which hundreds of thousands hope to pass across the border to find the promised land in the United States. What these North Americans do not realize is that for thousands of Latin Americans and for many U.S. intellectuals, Mexico after the revolution of 1910-1920 constituted the promised land. People persecuted for their political or religious beliefs—radicals, revolutionaries but liberals as well—could find refuge in Mexico when repressive regimes took over their country. In the 1920s such radical leaders as

It was expected that subjects from Guatemala and El Salvador would obtain higher scores on the F, D, Pa, and Sc scales because these subjects came from “war-torn” countries. A multivariate analysis of variance yielded no significant differences between the three groups on any of the validity and clinical scales including F, D, Pa, and Sc. While gang violence, community violence, and domestic violence have been recognized as contributing factors to Central American migration, less is known about the intersection between child maltreatment and migration. This article uses secondary data from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) interviews with unaccompanied minors from Central America and Mexico to examine child maltreatment. It provides information on the abused children, their abusers, and the questions that led to their disclosure of maltreatment. It finds that girls reported maltreatment at higher rates than

Abstract: This article examines how Mexican border women negotiated war and family separations and gives new insights into the lives of women, families, and children who escaped the violence of the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). As hundreds of thousands of Mexicans began crossing the border to the United States during the evolution, thousands of them, especially women and children, were detained and interned in refugee camps along the US–Mexico borderlands. This article examines the role of the US military in detention centers and argues that Anglo-American ideologies of race and gender shape

This article presents a mixed-methods study of domestic-violence-related claims for Mexican asylum-seekers in Canada. Although refugee claims that indicate domestic violence are slightly more likely to be approved, the majority of Mexicans seeking protection from domestic violence are denied because they are unable to demonstrate the lack of state protection. Our findings illustrate that Immigration and Refugee Board members’ assessment of a claimant’s credibility, internal flight alternatives, and the availability of state protection pivot on their perception of Mexico as a “democratic” or “s

Over 800,000 Mexican agricultural workers are employed in California each year, of which approximately 400,000 are estimated to be undocumented immigrants. Previous studies have found President Trump to be distinct in his anti-immigrant rhetoric and explicit verbal attacks of immigrants and refugees, which predicts hostile community attitudes towards immigrants and minorities. We convened 19 focus groups (FG) in diverse regions of California to gather information from Latina/o agriculture workers on the potential impact(s) of the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and immigration p

American political scientists, sociologists, and immigrant rights advocates have often viewed the current anti-immigrant frenzy in the United States as a response to the country’s economic condition. Echoing the economism of the restrictionists, they have argued that the present hostility toward “aliens” is an ephemeral and cyclical reaction to the nation’s swelled unemployment rolls and economic slump. These observers cite the juxtaposition of periods of receptivity with periods of exclusion as empirical evidence—e.g., the “open door” era of 1776–1881 before the era of regulation of 1882–1924

ABSTRACTThis paper explores how people reason about Alzheimer's disease by telling stories about others who have the disease. More specifically, the paper is a cross-linguistic investigation of the narrative and linguistic devices used by African Americans in English, Mexican Americans in Spanish, and refugees/immigrants from the former Soviet Union (to the United States of America) in Russian in their oral productions of such stories. We examine the narratives as instances of case-based reasoning in which lay people (non-medical professionals) distinguish, represent and ‘perform’ symptomatic

A combination of legacies led to the concentration of Vietnamese in Los Angeles: decades of U.S. involvement in Vietnam; Cold War foreign policy; domestic urban planning; and public housing policies born of the city’s history of racial segregation. These structural forces also drew many other immigrant groups to Los Angeles during the same period, as Koreans, Thais, Mexicans, and Central Americans likewise concentrated in L.A., each develo

This article delves into the relationships established between the visual arts and the cinematographic medium within the context of the Republican exile. Previously we have seen partial studies on the subject - above all, of what was done in Mexico -, such as those dedicated to Renau's poster art and the contribution of other refugees to scenography. Here, we propose a first general approach that contemplates a broader geographical field, putting on the table the localized work of the exiled artists for other cinematographies, such as those of Argentina, Cuba, France, USSR and the United State

Abstract Although families have always cared for their aging members, changes in contemporary society have added to the stress and challenges of providing daily care and support for relatives experiencing physical and/or cognitive decline. Personal characteristics, geographic location, and family structures and relationships influence beliefs about family care; thus, recognizing differences within and across families is crucial for developing culturally informed caregiving programs and practices. Abstract Social engagement is crucial in older adulthood. Social engagement strengthens a sense of belonging, fosters meaningful participation in activities, enhances physical and mental health, alleviates stress and anxiety, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. However, older immigrants often face challenges in engaging socially due to acculturation stress and unfamiliar cultural norms. Using a systematic review of existing literature, this study seeks to identify existing literature that discusses older immigrants’ involvement and participation in community programming, synthesize findings on t
