Purpose The numerical simulation of dispersed-phase evolution in injection molding process of polymer blends is of great significance in both adjusting material microstructure and improving performances of the final products. This paper aims to present a numerical strategy for the simulation of dispersed-phase evolution for immiscible polymer blends in injection molding. Design/methodology/approach First, the dispersed-phase modeling is discussed in detail. Then the Maffettone–Minale model, affine deformation model, breakup model and coalescence statistical model are chosen for the dispersed-phase evolution. A general coupled model of microscopic morphological evolution and macroscopic flow field is constructed. Besides, a stable finite element simulation strategy based on pressure-stabilizing/Petrov–Galerkin/streamline-upwind/Petrov–Galerkin method is adopted for both scales. Findings Finally, the simulation results are compared and evaluated with the experimental data, suggesting the reliability of the presented numerical strategy. Originality/value The coupled modeling of dispersed-phase and complex flow field during injection molding and the tracing and simulation of droplet evolution during the whole process can be achieved.

A new macroscopic model describing the rheology and microstructure of dilute emulsions with droplet morphology is developed based on an internal contravariant conformation tensor variable which is physically identified with the deformed ellipsoidal geometry of the dispersed phase. The model is consistent with existing first-order capillary number, $O(Ca)$, theory describing the microstructure as well as $O(Ca^{2})$ theory describing the emulsion-contributed extra stress. These asymptotic solutions are also used to determine all of the model parameters, making it the only macroscopic emulsion model that is consistent with all available asymptotic theories in the limit of small $Ca$. The governing equations are obtained from the Poisson and dissipation brackets, as developed for an incompressible fluid system endowed with an internal contravariant second-order tensor, subject to the imposition of the constraint of a unit determinant. First proposed by Maffettone & Minale (J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., vol. 78, 1998, pp. 227–241), this constraint physically corresponds to conservation of the volume of the dispersed phase in the emulsion. The Hamiltonian of the emulsion is expressed through the surface energy of the dispersed phase, in addition to the kinetic energy, following previous work by Grmela et al. (J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., vol. 212, 2014, pp. 1–12), but employing a more accurate evaluation of the surface area in terms of the internal contravariant conformation tensor. Structural predictions of the ellipsoid droplet morphology obtained with the new model are compared with classic experiments by Torza et al. (J. Colloid Interface Sci., vol. 38, 1972, pp. 395–411), showing good agreement.

The influence of the underlying flow topology on the shape and size of sub-Kolmogorov droplets dispersed in a turbulent flow is of considerable interest in many industrial and scientific applications. In this work we study the deformation and orientation statistics of sub-Kolmogorov droplets dispersed into a turbulent Taylor–Couette flow. Along with direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the carrier phase and Lagrangian tracking of the dispersed droplets, we solve a phenomenological equation proposed by Maffettone and Minale (J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., vol. 78, 1998, pp. 227–241) to track the shape evolution and orientation of approximately $10^{5}$ ellipsoidal droplets. By varying the capillary number $Ca$ and viscosity ratio $\hat{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ of the droplets we find that they deform more with increasing capillary number $Ca$ and this effect is more pronounced in the boundary layer regions. This indicates that along with an expected capillary number effect there is also a strong correlation between spatial position and degree of deformation of the droplet. Regardless of the capillary number $Ca$, the major axis of the ellipsoids tends to align with the streamwise direction and the extensional strain rate eigendirection in the boundary layer region while the distribution is highly isotropic in the bulk due to the strong mixing provided by the large-scale vortical structures. When the viscosity ratio between the droplet and the carrier fluid is increased we find that there is no preferential stretched axis which is due to the increased influence of rotation over stretching and relaxation. Droplets in high viscosity ratio systems are thus less deformed and oblate (disk-like) as compared to highly deformed prolate (cigar-like) droplets in low viscosity ratio systems.

Abstract Background Macrophage-inducible C-type lectin [Mincle] signalling plays a proinflammatory role in different organs such as the brain and liver, but its role in intestinal inflammation, including Crohn’s disease [CD], remains unknown. Methods The characteristics of Mincle signalling expression in CD patients and experimental colitis were examined. The functional role of Mincle signalling in the intestine was addressed in experimental colitis models in vivo by using Mincle knock-out [Mincle-/-] mice. In addition, neutralising anti-Mincle antibody, downstream spleen tyrosine kinase [Syk] inhibitor, and Mincle pharmacological agonist were used to study the Mincle signalling in intestine. Bone marrow-derived macrophages were collected from mice and used to further verify the effect of Mincle signalling in macrophages. Results This study has shown that Mincle signalling was significantly elevated in active human CD and experimental colitis, and macrophages were the principal leukocyte subset that upregulate Mincle signalling. Mincle deficiency and Syk pharmacological inhibition ameliorated the colitis by reducing induced macrophage pyroptosis, and activation of Mincle with the agonist aggravated the intestinal inflammation. The ex vivo studies demonstrated that activation of Mincle signalling promoted the release of proinflammatory cytokines, whereas its absence restricted release of proinflammatory cytokines from pyroptosis of macrophages. In addition, Mincle/Syk signalling in macrophages could promote the production of chemokines to recruit neutrophils by activating mitogen-activated protein kinase [MAPK] during intestinal inflammation. Conclusions Mincle signalling promotes intestinal mucosal inflammation by inducing macrophage pyroptosis. Modulation of the Mincle/Syk axis emerges as a potential therapeutic strategy to target inflammation and treat CD.

Introduction: This study aimed to detect the early expression of macrophage-inducible C-type lectin (Mincle) and investigate its role in the innate immune response of fungal keratitis (FK). Methodology: Wistar rats were used to make fungal keratitis models. The inflammatory responses and corneal lesions were observed by slit-lamp microscope.RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence were used to detect the expression of Mincle in the rat corneal epithelium. The expression of eight cytokines (CXCL1, CXCL2, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, CCL2, CCL3) were detected by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Lastly, corneal epithelium of 54 patients with Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis and 13 ocular trauma patients were collected to detect expression of Mincle by real-time RT-PCR, and 12 FK and 10 ocular trauma paraffin samples were collected to confirm expression of Mincle by immunohistochemistry. Results: The expression of Mincle was significantly upregulated at 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours after fungal infection. There were significant differences in the expression of the eight inflammatory cytokines between the blank control group and the fungus-infected group. Mincle expression was correlated with the expression of TNF-a, IL-1β, IL-10, and CCL3 in the cornea. The mRNA expressions of Mincle in the corneas of both normal and FK patients were significantly different. Conclusions: The expression of Mincle increases significantly during the early period of Aspergillus fumigatus infection, while expression of eight corresponding cytokines changes. Mincle, as a pattern recognition receptor, may play a role in the early innate immune response of the corneal resistance against fungus.

MindMe is an aid for people with cognitive memory impairments. The aid is completely new and has been

developed within this bachelor thesis, no product of this nature could be found on the market before. The

idea came from Niclas Jarhäll, CEO of Mutual Benefits. Mutual Benefits were also partners in the project.

The project was carried out by us in cooperation with Bachelor of Science in Innovation Engineering

students Malin Albertsson and Victoria Hedman at Halmstad university. The aid consists of a mobile phone

and a number of tags. The goal was for the mobile phone and tag to set of their alarms when they get a

certain distance apart.

It is the technical part of the project that will be discussed in this paper and it was divided in two parts,

prototype development and software for the mobile phone.

The project resulted in a prototype and an application for the mobile phone. The prototype and mobile phone

set of their alarms when they come to far apart. The user has the option to change settings in the mobile

phone application that affects both phone and tag and to add/remove tags. Both application and tag meet the

requirements set in the technical specification.

Utgångspunkten för denna studie är min iakttagelse av barn och ungdomars rörelse. Jag vill undersöka hur det ser ut på en liten ort i Norrland. Studiens syfte är att få fram hur mycket barnen rör sig och se om det finns önskemål från dem på aktiviteter och mötesplatser som skapar mer rörelse. En kvalitativ forskningsmetod med semistrukturerade intervjuer har använts för att söka svar på studiens syfte och frågeställningar. Studiens resultat visade att det är olika faktorer som gör att rörelsen blivit mindre bland barn och ungdomar. Detta beror bland annat på ökad användning av dator, telefoner, och Ipads. Tiden framför dessa skärmar ägnas åt att ha koll på sociala medier, spela online spel och se på Youtube samt diverse serier. Många av barnen utrycker att det är mycket läxor som gör att de inte orkar med fritidsaktiviteter samt att de saknar större utbud av olika idrottsaktiviteter på orten. Studien visar att de yngre barnen rör sig mer än de äldre. Generellt rör sig barn och ungdomar för lite på en mindre ort i Norrland. Studien visar även att det finns ett behov av fler fysiska aktiviteter under skol- och fritid.

The amount of cargo has since the 1970s increased in Sweden and the road traffic accounts for a large part of the transported volume. In Stockholm County the amount of cargo is calculated to be doubled in size from year 2001 to 2020 which means a greater need for transport is required. Much of these transports are being carried out by haulage companies of varying sizes which acts externally as carriers for their customers. All of this despite a greater awareness, laws and demands regarding environmental performance. The trend shows that the haulage industry in Sweden are moving towards fewer but larger haulage companies, which means that the competition is getting tougher for the smaller haulage companies. Smaller haulage companies and research about their competitive strategies is a neglected part of this industry. The purpose if this paper is therefore to investigate and analyze small haulage companies’ competitive strategies. We want to find out what competitive strategies small haulage companies use in order to be competitive in the haulage industry. The study demarcates to the Stockholm and Uppsala regions together with the haulage companies which this paper defines as minor, those with 1-15 trucks or cars in their fleet. Data has been gathered through a web based survey that was mailed out to the respondents after phone contact was made with them. A total of 185 companies were contacted from a list we made ourselves with help from the yellow pages online. After losses due to different reasons 40 respondents remained which have been the basis to the results of this paper. The conclusion of this research is that the smaller haulage companies who participated in our survey sees the haulage industry in Stockholm and Uppsala county as a matured industry as they believe that the greatest threat to their business are competing firms of various kinds. The respondents believe that their competitors use different pricing strategies and counter this by differentiate themselves with a strategy consisting of god service and quality. This also provides added value for their customers since they win competitive advantages through the smaller haulage company’s strategic work.

Studiens syfte är att studera och förstå lärares roll som normskapare. Studien utgår ifrån den stämplingsteoretiska traditionen och undersökningen genomförs med hjälp av hermeneutisk metod. Genom att använda hermeneutisk metod ges författarna möjlighet att använda sin förförståelse. Materialet är insamlat via intervjuer. Några olika aspekter som på något sätt berör lärarens normskapande roll studeras och dessa aspekter är lagstiftning, diagnoskulturen, informella normer och resurser. Dessa hjälper också författarna att utvidga sin förförståelse för ämnet. Resultaten visar att lärarens roll som normskapare är mycket komplex och beroende av yttre faktorer. Lärarens normskapande roll är kanske inte alltid vad läraren själv vill att den ska vara. Studien ger ett lärarperspektiv på normskapande insatser och agerande.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been evaluating the job/task of air-arc gouging performed by mine shop welders. Air-arc gouging is the process of melting an old weld with a carbon based electrode (rod) and blowing the molten metal away with compressed air. Noise levels of 115 dBA or higher can be generated in this process. Three acoustical field evaluations were conducted at mine shops comparing both Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) techniques for air-arc gouging. The results indicate that by using the CV technique, the average overall A-Weighted Sound Pressure Level (SPLA) was reduced by as much as 8 dBA from an average of 117.6 dBA to 109.3 dBA. As might be expected, dosimeter results indicated that the rate of noise accumulation was also reduced utilizing the CV technique. The average accumulation rate decreased from 4.5 percent Dose per minute for CC at varying air pressures to 2.0 percent Dose per minute for CV at 80 psig.

Анотація:
An approach to increasing sensor performance and detection reliability for buried objects is to better understand which physical processes are dominant under certain environmental conditions. The present effort (Phase 2) builds on our previously published prior effort (Phase 1), which examined methods of determining the probability of detection and false alarm rates using thermal infrared for buried-object detection. The study utilized a 3.05 × 3.05 m test plot in Hanover, New Hampshire. Unlike Phase 1, the current effort involved removing the soil from the test plot area, homogenizing the material, then reapplying it into eight discrete layers along with buried sensors and objects representing targets of inter-est. Each layer was compacted to a uniform density consistent with the background undisturbed density. Homogenization greatly reduced the microscale soil temperature variability, simplifying data analysis. The Phase 2 study spanned May–November 2018. Simultaneous measurements of soil temperature and moisture (as well as air temperature and humidity, cloud cover, and incoming solar radiation) were obtained daily and recorded at 15-minute intervals and coupled with thermal infrared and electro-optical image collection at 5-minute intervals.
