Objective:To evauluate our novel ultrasound model for measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and determine the intra- and inter-operator variability associated with this technique.Methods:We conducted ten measurements of ONSD per model amongst eight different models with a single experienced operator to examine intra-operator variability. Similarly, we had seven different operators measure the OSND twice in eight different models, in order to determine inter-operator variability analyzed with a three level linear statistical model.Results:For intra-operator variability, the intra-cluster correlation coefficients for the experienced and novice operators were 0.643 and 0.453 respectively. This displayed improvement in intra-operator variability with experience. The inter-cluster correlation coefficient was 0 for the group of novice operators, indicating negligible difference amongst multiple operators in measuring any given model of ONSD. A strong, statistically significant, linear relationship between the actual model disc size and the ultrasound ONSD measures was identified, implying the reliability of the images produced by our novel model.Conclusions:Utilizing a novel model for ONSD ultrasonography, we have determined the intraoperator reliability of ONSD measurement to be moderate, with no appreciable difference amongst multiple operators. Improvement in measurement reliability has been demonstrated between expert and novice operators with our model, indicating the potential benefit of simulation platforms for teaching the technique of ONSD ultrasound.

Purpose Buffer operators can be utilized to improve the smooth degree of the raw data sequence, and to increase the simulation accuracy of the model. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the cause of increase in the simulation accuracy of the buffer operator. Design/methodology/approach This paper probed into the modeling mechanism of several typical buffer operators such as the arithmetic buffer operators, the buffer operators with monotonic function and weighted buffer operators. The paper also gives an example of the buffer operator sequence. Findings The results indicate that after applying an infinite buffer operator, whether the authors adopt a weakening buffer operator or a strengthen buffer operator, the raw sequence can be changed into a constant sequence. Because the discrete GM(1,1) model can completely simulate constant sequence, the simulation accuracy is 100 percent. Because the discrete GM(1,1) model is the accurate form of the GM(1,1) model, after applying an infinite buffer operator, the GM(1,1) model can have a very high simulation accuracy. The buffer operator model can increase the simulation accuracy of both the GM(1,1) model and the discrete GM(1,1) model. Originality/value The paper analyses the cause of increasing simulation accuracy of the buffer operator model. The paper may indicate that possible results can be studied in the future. All the buffer operator models have similar properties. After applying an infinite buffer operator, the raw sequence can be changed into a constant sequence. A fixed-point axiom may be the basic cause.

In the digital world today, cellular networks and their operators play a competitive and important role in communications. The bases of the competition of operators are the quality of provided services and the coverage level of their antennas, thereby attract customers. This paper studies cellular networks with two old and new operators and under the influence of government intervention in one area. Due to the high cost of building an antenna, the new operator participates in the cost of the infrastructure of the old operator to use the services of these antennas for their customers. On the other hand, the government considers incentive schemes to support mobile operators. The government plans to take part in the infrastructure costs of the old operator, and will receive the income tax from it. Hence, the new operator will go off from paying tax. The government subsidy contract with the old operator is based on the coverage level of the antenna and supports the operator to increase the coverage level. By doing so, the quality level of services and coverage development rate for the old operator increases, leading to increased demand and increased profits for this operator. On the other hand, as government support increases the demand for the old operator, the demand for the new operator decreases and the profit of the new operator decreases. Some numerical examples for Iranian telecommunication companies are applied to examine the applicability of the proposed models. Finally, sensitivity analysis on the main parameters is analyzed in-depth to extract some managerial implications.

In this paper, we consider the problem of training operators to make identification judgments from multidimensional, possibly probabilistic, information sources. We used models of the environment and the operator to measure the causes of lack of fit of the operator to the environment. Linear regression was used to model the relationship between cues and identifications. Cues in the environment were regressed on the correct identification to obtain the environmental model. These same cues were regressed on the operators' identity judgments to obtain the operator models. Individual environmental models were necessary in order to properly represent the environment when operator decisions and timing shaped the environment dynamically. High agreement between environmental and operator models were linked to top performance on the task. Implications for training are discussed.

With respect to multiple attribute group decision making problem with triangular fuzzy linguistic information, in which the attribute weights and expert weights take the form of real numbers, and the preference values take the form of triangular fuzzy linguistic variables, some operators for aggregating triangular fuzzy linguistic variables, such as the fuzzy linguistic harmonic mean (FLHM) operator, fuzzy linguistic weighted harmonic mean (FLWHM) operator, fuzzy linguistic ordered weighted harmonic mean (FLOWHM) operator, and fuzzy linguistic hybrid harmonic mean (FLHHM) operator are proposed. Based on the FLWHM and FLHHM operators, a practical method is developed for group decision making with triangular fuzzy linguistic variables. Finally, an illustrative example about software patters selection is given to verify the developed approach.

The utilized power average and power geometric operations used to develop some picture 2-tuple linguistic power aggregation operators: picture 2-tuple linguistic power weighted average (P2TLPWA) operator, picture 2-tuple linguistic power weighted geometric (P2TLPWG) operator, picture 2-tuple linguistic power ordered weighted average (P2TLPOWA) operator, picture 2-tuple linguistic power ordered weighted geometric (P2TLPOWG) operator, picture 2-tuple linguistic power hybrid average (P2TLPHA) operator and picture 2-tuple linguistic power hybrid geometric (P2TLPHG) operator. The prominent characteristic of these proposed operators is studied. This article has utilized these operators to develop some approaches to solve the picture 2-tuple linguistic multiple attribute decision making problems. Finally, a practical example for enterprise resource planning (ERP) system selection is given to verify the developed approach and to demonstrate its practicality and effectiveness.

Purpose This paper aims to present a novel stageless evaluation scheme for a vector Preisach model that exploits rotational operators for the description of vector hysteresis. It is meant to resolve the discretizational errors that arise during the application of the standard matrix-based implementation of Preisach-based models. Design/methodology/approach The newly developed evaluation uses a nested-list data structure. Together with an adapted form of the Everett function, it allows to represent both the additional rotational operator and the switching operator of the standard scalar Preisach model in a stageless fashion, i.e. without introducing discretization errors. Additionally, presented updating and simplification rules ensure the computational efficiency of the scheme. Findings A comparison between the stageless evaluation scheme and the commonly used matrix approach reveals not only an improvement in accuracy up to machine precision but, furthermore, a reduction of computational resources. Research limitations/implications The presented evaluation scheme is especially designed for a vector Preisach model, which is based on an additional rotational operator. A direct application to other vector Preisach models that do not rely on rotational operators is not intended. Nevertheless, the presented methodology allows an easy adaption to similar vector Preisach schemes that use modified setting rules for the rotational operator and/or the switching operator. Originality/value Prior to this contribution, the vector Preisach model based on rotational operators could only be evaluated using a matrix-based approach that works with discretized forms of rotational and switching operator. The presented evaluation scheme offers reduced computational cost at much higher accuracy. Therefore, it is of great interest for all users of the mentioned or similar vector Preisach models.

In this article, we study multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) problems with picture fuzzy numbers (PFNs) information. Afterwards, we adopt a Muirhead mean (MM) operator, a weighted MM (WMM) operator, a dual MM (DMM) operator, and a weighted DMM (WDMM) operator to define some picture fuzzy aggregation operators, including the picture fuzzy MM (PFMM) operator, the picture fuzzy WMM (PFWMM) operator, the picture fuzzy DMM (PFDMM) operator, and the picture fuzzy WDMM (PFWDMM) operator. Of course, the precious merits of these defined operators are investigated. Moreover, we have adopted the PFWMM and PFWDMM operators to build a decision-making model to handle picture fuzzy MADM problems. In the end, we take a concrete instance of appraising a financial investment risk to demonstrate our defined model and to verify its accuracy and scientific merit.

Human operators often employ discontinuous or "bang-bang" control strategies when performing large-amplitude acquisition tasks. The current study applies Variable Structure Control (VSC) techniques to model human operator behavior during acquisition tasks. The result is a coupled, multi-input model replicating the discontinuous control strategy. In the VSC formulation, a switching surface is the mathematical representation of the operator's control strategy. The performance of the Variable Strategy Model (VSM) is evaluated by considering several examples, including the longitudinal control of an aircraft during the visual landing task. The aircraft landing task becomes an acquisition maneuver whenever large initial offsets occur. Several different strategies are explored in the VSM formulation for the aircraft landing task. First, a switching surface is constructed from literal interpretations of pilot training literature. This approach yields a mathematical representation of how a pilot is trained to fly a generic aircraft. This switching surface is shown to bound the trajectory response of a group of pilots performing an offset landing task in an aircraft simulator study. Next, front-side and back-side landing strategies are compared. A back-side landing strategy is found to be capable of landing an aircraft flying on either the front side or back side of the power curve. However, the front-side landing strategy is found to be insufficient for landing an aircraft flying on the back side. Finally, a more refined landing strategy is developed that takes into the account the specific aircraft's dynamic characteristics. The refined strategy is translated back into terminology similar to the existing pilot training literature.

With increasing mobile data demand there is a push towards heterogeneous networks. Small-scale operators (SSOs) of WLANs are becoming more prevalent, while Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) seek an outlet for their customers' data usage. These conditions prompt the need for an effective relationship between the two parties for the purpose of offloading cellular data traffic to WLANs in a way that is economically beneficial to all involved. This thesis presents a model of such a relationship, in which the SSO sets a strategic offloading price per subscriber and several MNOs can choose how many subscribers they want to offload in order to minimize their costs. We determine the optimal offloading price, identify how the SSO incorporates its own network's quality of service (QoS) into its price decision, and examine the way in which the MNOs' cost structures affect their ability to offload. This model can be applied by both MNOs and SSOs to make informed network deployment decisions, even before engaging in an offloading relationship.

This thesis explores the potential use and implementation of a revenuemanagement model for coworking operators. With a critical realism philosophyand abductive approach, a quantitative study using primary data from a coworkingoperator has been conducted. Based on a comprehensive literature review, wehave found that much research is done on revenue management in the airline andhotel industries. However, we found no research on revenue management modelsthat intend to optimize revenue for coworking operations. Hence, this thesis aimsto fill this gap in existing academic research. Features from revenue managementmodels used in the hotel and airline industries are identified and analyzed with theobjective of implementing these in the coworking industry to efficiently maximizerevenue. The paper proposes the use of multinomial logit (MNL) model in theprocess of market segmentation; this method allows one to determine whichfactors influence the different segments. Moreover, the MNL model is used todefine the demand function from which a probability (probable?) distributionof total demand can be separated into demands representing each product class.Furthermore, the demand is used to calculate protection limits according to theExpected Marginal Seat Revenue (EMSR) model, with the objective of allocatingcapacity to the highest-yielding customers.Results indicate that the MNL regression is an effective tool to analyze themarket segmentation and demand allocation for coworking operators. Afterour successful analysis, we are prepared to argue with confidence that revenuemanagement models are applicable to coworking operations.
I denna uppsats undersöker vi den potentiella användningen och genomförandetav intäktsoptimeringsmodeller för coworking operatörer. En kvantitativ studiemed primär data från en coworking operatör har genomförts med en kritiskrealismfilosofi och ett abduktivt tillvägagångssätt. Det finns mycket forskningkring intäktsoptimering, framför allt inom flyg- och hotellbranschen, men ingensom behandlar intäktsoptimeringsmodeller med avseendepå coworking operatörer. Denna masteruppsats syftar till att bidra med kunskapför att fylla gapet kring revenue management för coworkingkontor, som saknas ibefintlig, svensk akademisk forskning idag.Vitala funktioner som utgör intäktoptimeringsmodeller ämnade för hotellochflygindustrin har identifierats och analyserats med målet att utforskamöjlig implementering för coworkingoperatörer. I uppsatsen genomförsen marknadssegmentering med hjälp av en multinomial regressionsanalys.Vidare görs en multinomial regressionsanalys med samtliga produktklasser somberoende variabler, för att få ut sannolikhetsfördelningen för vilka produkter somefterfrågas av den totala efterfrågan. Resultatet kan användas för att optimeratotala intäkterna genom att beräkna hur många platser som bör reserveras åthögt avkastande kunder, och hur många som kan hyras ut i tidigt skede. Förändamålet har vi tillämpat den så kallade Expected Marginal Seat Revenuemetoden, EMSR.Resultatet indikerar att multinomial logistisk regression är ett effektivt sätt attanalysera marknadssegment och styra efterfrågan till önskad produktklass. As technology advances, many practical applications require human-controlled robots. For such applications, it is useful to determine the optimal number of robots an operator should control to maximize human efficiency given different situations. One way to achieve this is through computer simulations of team performance. In order to factor in various parameters that may affect team performance, an agent-based model will be used. Agent-based modeling is a computational method that enables a researcher to create, analyze, and experiment with models composed of agents that interact within an environment [12]. We construct an agent-based model of humans interacting with robots, and explore how team performance relates to different agent parameters and team organizational structures [21]. Prior work describes interaction between a single operator and multiple robots, while this work includes multi-operator performance and coordination. Model parameters include neglect time, interaction time, operator slack time, level of robot autonomy, etc. Understanding the parameters that influence team performance will be a step towards finding ways to maximize performance in real life human-robot systems.

Convex optimization has developed a wide variety of useful tools critical to many applications in machine learning. However, unlike linear and quadratic programming, general convex solvers have not yet reached sufficient maturity to fully decouple the convex programming model from the numerical algorithms required for implementation. Especially as datasets grow in size, there is a significant gap in speed and scalability between general solvers and specialized algorithms. This thesis addresses this gap with a new model for convex programming based on an intermediate representation of convex problems as a sum of functions with efficient proximal operators. This representation serves two purposes: 1) many problems can be expressed in terms of functions with simple proximal operators, and 2) the proximal operator form serves as a general interface to any specialized algorithm that can incorporate additional `2-regularization. On a single CPU core, numerical results demonstrate that the prox-affine form results in significantly faster algorithms than existing general solvers based on conic forms. In addition, splitting problems into separable sums is attractive from the perspective of distributing solver work amongst multiple cores and machines. We apply large-scale convex programming to several problems arising from building the next-generation, information-enabled electrical grid. In these problems (as is common in many domains) large, high-dimensional datasets present opportunities for novel data-driven solutions. We present approaches based on convex models for several problems: probabilistic forecasting of electricity generation and demand, preventing failures in microgrids and source separation for whole-home energy disaggregation.

Over the years, people have found Quantum Mechanics to be extremely useful in explaining various physical phenomena from a microscopic point of view. Anderson localization, named after physicist P. W. Anderson, states that disorder in a crystal can cause non-spreading of wave packets, which is one possible mechanism (at single electron level) to explain metalinsulator transitions. The theory of quantum computation promises to bring greater computational power over classical computers by making use of some special features of Quantum Mechanics. The first part of this dissertation considers a 3D alloy-type model, where the Hamiltonian is the sum of the finite difference Laplacian corresponding to free motion of an electron and a random potential generated by a sign-indefinite single-site potential. The result shows that localization occurs in the weak disorder regime, i.e., when the coupling parameter λ is very small, for energies E ≤ −Cλ² . The second part of this dissertation considers adiabatic quantum computing (AQC) algorithms for the unstructured search problem to the case when the number of marked items is unknown. In an ideal situation, an explicit quantum algorithm together with a counting subroutine are given that achieve the optimal Grover speedup over classical algorithms, i.e., roughly speaking, reduce O(2n ) to O(2n/2 ), where n is the size of the problem. However, if one considers more realistic settings, the result shows this quantum speedup is achievable only under a very rigid control precision requirement (e.g., exponentially small control error).

Traditional generators have been decommissioned or replaced by renewable energy generation due to utility long-standing goals. However, instead of flattening the entire plant, the rotating mass of generator can be utilized as a storage unit (inertia resource) to mitigate the frequency swings during transient caused by the renewables. The goal of this work is to design a control strategy utilizing the decommissioned generator interfaced with power grid via a back-to-back converter to provide inertia support. This is referred to as decoupled synchronous machine system (DSMS). On top of that, the grid-side converter is capable of providing reactive power as an auxiliary voltage controller. However, in a practical setting, for power utilities, the detailed state equations of such device as well as the complicated nonlinear power system are usually unobtainable making the controller design a challenging problem. Therefore, a model free, purely data-driven strategy for the nonlinear controller design using Koopman operator-based framework is proposed. Besides, the time delay embedding technique is adopted together with Koopman operator theory for the nonlinear system identification. Koopman operator provides a linear representation of the system and thereby the classical linear control algorithms can be applied. In this work, model predictive control is adopted to cope with the constraints of the control signals. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed system are demonstrated in Kundur two-area system and IEEE 39-bus system.

AbstractDeveloping systems that foster situation awareness in operators requires that stakeholders can make informed decisions about the design. These decisions must account for the operator’s underlying cognitive processes based on perception, comprehension, and projection of the system state. This chapter reviews the core cognitive processes responsible for monitoring and responding to changes in system state. Operators must perceive information before they can act in response, and the interface design affects operator accuracy and speed via known mechanisms (i.e., effects of color on visual search time). Perception of key information also relies on how the operator thinks during tasks, and certain design choices can support better attention control and detection of signals. After perceiving the information, operators also must comprehend and interpret the information. Design guidance and factors related to supporting comprehension are presented alongside explanations of how cognitive load and working memory affect the operator’s ability to develop and maintain a useful mental model of the system. This review of cognitive mechanisms gives designers a strong foundation to make informed decisions ranging from choosing an alarm color to assessing how much information should be on screen at once.

This study evaluates the demand for truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways with owner–operator truck drivers. The study implemented the stated preference survey method to estimate the value placed by drivers on time, reliability, and safety measures using various scenarios geared towards assessing those values. The project team met face-to-face with owner- operator truck drivers near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to understand the drivers’ perspectives regarding truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways. A data set containing 31 survey responses is obtained and used for statistical data analysis using analysis of variable (ANOVA) and two sample t-tests. The analysis results showed that 75.27% of the owner– operator truck drivers responded are willing to pay toll fees when they choose routes. The tolerated average toll fees are $13.77/ hr and $12.82/hr for weekdays and weekends, respectively. The analysis results also showed that owner–operator truck drivers will take truck-only toll lanes when they take the routes used in four comparisons out of six comparisons according to the three measures such as values of time, reliability, and safety, despite sharing a common origin and destination. The highest toll fee per mile on any day that drivers are willing to pay when the main factor being compared is value of time is $0.31/mile or $18.35/hr. The toll fees associated with reliability and safety measures are $0.30/mile or $8.94/hr and $0.22/mile or $11.01/hr, respectively. These results are meaningful for legislators and transportation agencies as the behaviors and route choice characteristics of owner–operator truck drivers help them better understand the utility and demand for truck-only toll lanes.

Upstream of the confluence of the Red River, Atchafalaya River, and ORCC Outflow Channel are vast low-lying flat areas on both sides of the Lower Red River. During times of high water on the Lower Red—whether from upstream water in the Red or from the ORCC Outflow Channel—enormous amounts of water flow over the natural riverbanks and flood this land. The loss of this water from the river into storage affects the operation of the ORCC, which in turn affects the stages and flows down the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers. An improved understanding of this area and how water is stored during flood events is required to inform ORCC water management operations. Hydraulic analyses provide a basis to assess the changes in water levels, current directions and velocities, and flow rates for the assessment area. The hydraulic model HEC-RAS is used to expand on existing models of the area and to help overcome gaps in data. Understanding the processes of how water leaves the Red River channel, the volume and timing of the water moving into storage, and when the storage area begins to drain, will greatly inform the water managers and operators of the ORCC.
