Permanently sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) in gas-bearing shale formations is beneficial in that it can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions as well as enhance gas recovery in production wells. This is possible due to the sorption properties of the organic material within shales and their greater affinity for CO2 over methane. Acute indoor concentrations of benzene and ethanol were evaluated in the California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo’s pilot winery workroom. Air samples were collected during four different wine-making activities: fermentation, fermentation with Brix content testing, post-alcoholic fermentation pressing, and storage/finishing. Average workroom benzene concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.12 mg/m3. Ethanol concentrations in the winery workroom varied with the activity, ranging from 0.9 to 12 mg/m3. The use of continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (cw-CRDS) in the near-infrared (IR) region has great potential for the design of ultra-sensitive, compact, robust and cost-effective novel optical sensors capable of detecting trace species present in the atmosphere. The use of two online sensors, the S::CAN and the FLD, was used to evaluate the treatment of synthetic wastewater by UV/H₂O₂ advanced oxidation. The UV dose and intensity for the flow through reactor was also determined using H₂O₂ actinometry. The total power of the lamps in the reactor was determined to be 139 W which, with the absorbance of the water, produced a UV dose of 39.4 mJ/cm².
