This randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind intervention study aimed to investigate the effect of oral zinc gluconate supplementation (15 mg/d; 30 mg/d; and placebo) on subjective mood (affect) in older Europeans.SubjectsHealthy volunteers (n 387) aged 55–87 years were recruited.SettingVolunteers in Rome (Italy; n 108) and Grenoble (France; n 91) were aged 70–87 years and those in Coleraine (Northern Ireland; n 93) and Clermont-Ferrand (France; n 95) were aged 55–70 years.DesignMood was measured using the Positive and Negative Affect Scale on four occasions per day over 4 d at baseline, 3 and 6 months post-intervention.ResultsMixed ANOVA indicated that neither positive nor negative affect altered in response to zinc (15 mg/d or 30 mg/d) compared to placebo in either the 55–70 years or the ≥70 years age group.ConclusionsThese results suggest that zinc does not benefit mood in healthy older people.

During the Franco regime between 1939 and 1975, when Spain was under the grip of an official national-catholic ideology whose keystones were the army and church, the torero was used as a vector for Francoist ideology. Courageous, full of national pride and a stout Christian, the torero seemed to incarnate all the virtues of the Spanish, elevated in the Francoist model into the glorified image of the “soldier-monk”. Little research has so far been conducted into parallels drawn between the torero and the “soldier-monk”. Drawing on the analysis of media documents from the Franco period, this paper sets out to address the following question. How does the correlation between the torero and the “soldier-monk” fit with the sad-faced, austere knight-like figure of the matador Manolete (1917-1947) during the 1940s? Within the bullring, spectators (aficionados) and toreros share in intense emotions and a boundless sense of religious devotion that bind them to life while passing close to death.

On July 11, 1984, the 1979 Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies entered into force following the deposit with the Secretary-General of the United Nations of the fifth instrument of ratification. The Agreement, following its adoption by the General Assembly, was opened for signature on December 18, 1979. In the intervening years, it has been signed by Austria, Chile, France, Guatemala, India, Morocco, the Netherlands, Peru, the Philippines, Romania and Uruguay. The fifth state to deposit its ratification was Austria, which followed Chile, the Philippines, Uruguay and the Netherlands.

In his Astronomie populaire, Camille Flammarion points out that the heliocentric path of the Moon, which, according to him, has generally been represented as a sinuous curve, is actually concave everywhere towards the Sun. Flammarion’s observation is the starting point of this study which goes backwards in time, via often misinformed authors, to the mathematician who first established this counterintuitive property by means of a purely geometrical proof. The story also includes a heated debate between readers of a British periodical. Beginning in France at the end of the 19th century, the journey finishes in Scotland in the first half of the previous century.

Objective: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders in the population of Martinique, as part of the survey entitled ‘Mental Health in the General Population – Images and Realities’ (Santé Mentale en Population Générale – Images et Réalités). The survey was a multicentre epidemiological study in the general population, conducted in mainland France and French overseas islands between 1997 and 2006, under the authority of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Training and Research in Mental Health (Lille, France). Methods: The study took place in 2000. Participants aged 18 years or over were recruited in public places, using the quota sampling method, and interviewed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Results: A total of 900 participants (52.7% women) with a mean age of 43 years completed the survey. Lifetime prevalence of any mental disorder was 29%. Mood (15%) and anxiety disorders (17%) were the most frequent. The rate of suicide attempts was low (4.2% lifetime), while the frequency of suicidal thoughts was high (11% past month) and similar to the frequency in mainland France. Conclusion: Mental disorders, especially mood and anxiety disorders, were as frequent in Martinique as in mainland France. The lower rates of suicide attempts, in spite of high rates of suicidal thoughts, might deserve further investigation. Our results should strengthen the development of a system of diagnosis and care for these disorders, especially to prevent suicidal behaviours and reduce morbidity and mortality.

What will this victory mean when the very categories of political thought and classification, Right versus Left, “liberal ” versus “jacobin,” have lost a certain degree of their coherence. The break up of political discourse, the diffusion of similar ideas and “mots d’ordre” in opposing political camps, is indicative of a more general malaise. Attempting to “think” France in 1985, one is forced to move beyond statistics and voting intentions, to try to capture “l’air du temps.” A concept more literary than literal, embracing not only the questions asked by analysts of contemporary France but also the tone that these questions reveal, it is not without explanatory value, as Pierre Viansson-Ponté’s famous “la France s’ennuie” proved with the May ’68 events. A recent series of colloquia at N.Y.U.’s Institute of French Studies, on subjects ranging from de Gaulle’s come back in May 1958 to recent transformations in French intellectual life, both analyse and reflect the current mood in France.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns modified work environments, lifestyles, and food consumption. Eating habits and mood changes in a French population during the first lockdown were examined using an online self-reported questionnaire with REDCap software through the COVISTRESS.ORG website. In 671 French participants, the main changes during lockdown were increased stress levels (64 [23; 86] vs. 3 [0; 18]) and sedentary behavior (7 [4; 9] vs. 5 [3; 8] hours per day), a deterioration in sleep quality (50 [27; 83] vs. 70 [48; 94]) and mood (50 [30; 76] vs. 78 [50; 92]), and less physical activity (2.0 [0.5; 5.0] vs. 3.5 [2.0; 6.0]). Mood was modified, with more anger (56 [39; 76] vs. 31 [16; 50]), more sadness (50 [34; 72] vs. 28 [16; 50]), more agitation (50 [25; 66] vs. 43 [20; 50]), and more boredom (32 [7; 60] vs. 14 [3; 29]). A total of 25% of the participants increased their consumption of alcoholic beverages, 29% their consumption of sugary foods, and 26% their consumption of cocktail snacks. A multiple-correspondence analysis highlights four different profiles according to changes in eating habits, food consumption, lifestyle, and mood. In conclusion, eating habits and lifestyle changes during lockdown periods should be carefully monitored to promote healthy behaviors.

À partir de l’analyse d’une appropriation médiatique, la thèse interroge les (re)configurations symboliques de la presse professionnelle en communication. Il s’agit de voir dans quelle mesure un format médiatique (la « revue-livre ») peut contribuer aux redéfinitions d’un monde professionnel, par le travail de ses frontières. Pour ce faire, la thèse avance que la revue, média disciplinaire, institue les pratiques d’un monde socio-professionnel donné, ce qui ouvre la discussion sur le statut et la fonction de ce territoire spécialisé. Instance de lisibilité et de visibilité, cet espace informationnel doit pourtant se légitimer en continu, à l’instar de l’interprofession qu’il représente. L’emprunt au format actuel de la revue, source de désirabilités médiatiques, constitue alors une tentative de dépassement de cet amas tensif. Il permet de miser sur un flou autant fonctionnel que professionnel. Il permet aussi, dans la perspective d’une analyse concurrentielle au cœur de l’étude, d’occuper ou de maintenir une place. Le support et le format deviennent des outils de valorisation, des compensateurs de reconnaissance, des moteurs de distinction. En cela, la thèse étudie un lieu de fixation, parmi d’autres, d’une prétention communicationnelle. The objective is to analyze to what extent a media format (the “magazine-book”) contributes to the redefinition of a professional field by questioning its boundaries. To demonstrate that, the thesis asserts that the professional review institutes the practices of its socio-professional group, which opens the discussion on the status and function of this specialized territory. Agent of visibility, this informational space needs nonetheless to continuously legitimize itself. Using this current format of the review constitutes an attempt to overcome those tensions. It allows to leverage the vagueness of both this format function and communication professions. It also allows to establish and defend one’s positioning, as it is observed in the light of a competitive landscape analysis at the heart of the study. The support and the format become valorization tools, recognition substitutes and distinction drivers. From this perspective, this research studies an illustration, among others, of a communicational claim. The duet of knowledge and power will be transversal in this demonstration, because the observed escape is a tactical move to seize symbolic power, both in direction of the margins of the profession and its core. Ultimately, the focus of this thesis is to analyze the construction of intellectual devices, aiming at being legitimate and dominant representatives, by continuously redefining the professional and the communicational

The purpose of this work is to analyze the use of the indicative mood, instead of the subjunctive prescribed by the normative grammar, in complement clauses introduced by the conjunction que in Brazilian Portuguese. Contexts of use of the subjunctive according to grammatical prescription, and contexts of fluctuation on the use of that verbal mood were analyzed, in an attempt to investigate what interferes on the choice of the mood by the user of the language. This study is based on North-American Functional Linguistics theoretical perspective, oriented to analyzing language in use, in the light of the principles of grammaticalization and markedness. The results obtained support that the contexts that favor the indicative over the subjunctive are those composed by a complement clause functioning as a direct object the unmarked clause of all complement clauses and by a verb on the main sentence that belongs to the semantic field of low certainty, corresponding to the epistemic sub-mode the unmarked category of the deontic sub-mode. The results indicate that pragmatics and semantics factors influence the language user on the choice of the verbal mood. This research also presents comparative data on the use of the indicative mood in place of the subjunctive in Brazilian Portuguese and Canadian French, aiming to providing suggestions on language teaching
O prop?sito deste trabalho ? analisar a altern?ncia do emprego do modo subjuntivo com o indicativo em ora??es subordinadas substantivas introduzidas pela conjun??o que, no portugu?s falado no Brasil, nos casos em que o uso do subjuntivo ? prescrito pela gram?tica normativa. Foram analisados contextos de uso do subjuntivo conforme a prescri??o gramatical e tamb?m contextos de flutua??o no emprego desse modo verbal, buscando examinar que fatores interferem na escolha do modo verbal pelo usu?rio da l?ngua. Este estudo fundamentase na perspectiva te?rica da Ling??stica Funcional norte-americana, que tem como orienta??o analisar a l?ngua em uso, tomando por base especialmente os princ?pios da gramaticaliza??o e da marca??o. Os resultados obtidos fornecem ind?cios de que os contextos que favorecem a altern?ncia entre os modos subjuntivo e indicativo s?o aqueles constitu?dos por uma ora??o subordinada substantiva objetiva direta, a n?o-marcada em rela??o ?s demais ora??es subordinadas substantivas, e por um verbo na ora??o principal que perten?a ao campo sem?ntico de baixa certeza, correspondente ao submodo epist?mico, a categoria n?o-marcada em rela??o ao submodo de?ntico. L’avènement des MOOC et le buzz qu’il génère font du e-learning un sujet d’actualité et un enjeu stratégique de développement pour les universités. Cependant, force est de constater le peu d’études économiques traitant de ce sujet alors que cette modalité de formation existe depuis plus de dix ans dans les universités françaises. Quels sont les modèles économiques de ces formations, quelles sont leurs efficacités, quels impacts peuvent-elles avoir et à quelles conditions ?En levant les contraintes liées au temps et les contraintes liées à l’espace, le e-learning réinterroge l’approche économique de l’éducation que ce soit du point de vue de l’offre, de la demande ou des politiques éducatives. Nous proposons la mise en perspective des principaux enjeux économiques du e-learning universitaire diplômant, à partir de ces différents points de vue et ce dans une démarche d’évaluation. Le corpus théorique de l’économie de l’éducation et l’approche par les capabilités d’Amartya Sen sont mobilisés comme grille de lecture ce qui nous permet de mettre en lumière l’un des enjeux économiques majeurs du e-learning : le développement. Il permet d’atteindre un nouveau public contraint par la géographie et par sa situation d’emploi. Enfin la comparaison de deux mises en œuvre de politiques éducatives différenciées, celle de la Chine et celle de la France va nous permettre de rendre compte de réalisations concrètes et de démontrer la pertinence du e-learning en termes de développement des territoiresThe advent of MOOCs and the buzz it generates defines e-learning as a main topic in the development strategy of universities. However, very few economic studies have been done about it, even if this type of training has been present in French universities for more than ten years. What are the business models of this form of curriculum, how to mesure its efficiency and impacts?Lifting the constraints of time and space, e-learning reexamines the economic approach to education from the points of view of supply, demand or public policies. This work offers a perspective on the main economic issues for universitary graduating e-learning, from these points of view and through an assessment process. The theoretical corpus in economics of education and Amartya Sen’s “capability approach” are used as a reading tool which allows us to highlight one of the major economic issues of e-learning: regional economic development. This educational form allows the reaching of new audiences constrained by geography or employment status. The comparison of two implementations in two different educational policies settings -that of China and France- allows us to report on concrete results and demonstrate the relevance of e-learning in terms of regional development

La question de la qualité des programmes de télévision est une problématique récurrente tant pour les producteurs de contenu que pour le législateur, qui en a confié le contrôle dans la loi a une institution publique, le CSA. Cependant, la notion même de qualité dans ce contexte est ambiguë, et les outils permettant de l’évaluer sont souvent réduits à la vérification du respect d’obligations contractuelles avec les diffuseurs de contenus. Le seul outil universellement utilisé reste la mesure d’audience, souvent remise en cause depuis sa première utilisation en France dans les années 80. Le téléspectateur, principal intéressé de cette démarche qualité, n’est donc considéré que dans son nombre par cette démarche statistique. Cette étude propose de changer de paradigme pour placer le téléspectateur au cœur de l’évaluation des produits audiovisuels. A partir d’une perspective aux confluents de l’énaction de Francisco Varela et de la méthode de conception relativisée de Mioara Mugur-Schächter, l’étude de l’expérience émotionnelle apporte un regard nouveau et original sur la conception de spectateur dans un cadre d’évaluation des programmes. En s’intéressant a la façon dont le téléspectateur guide sa propre perception en fonction de son histoire personnelle, de sa façon d’interpréter son environnement et de l’influence des émotions dans la construction de sa relation à l’audiovisuel, les travaux menés permettent de replacer le téléspectateur comme acteur de l’évaluation. Les entretiens réalisés démontrent ainsi l’individualité de chaque spectateur dans son approche de l’audiovisuel et la construction de critères d’évaluations qui lui sont propres, mais permettant de définir un protocole a multiples niveaux utilisable comme indicateur de la qualité de la relation à l’audiovisuel dans un contexte plus largeThe quality of television programs is a running problem for the content producers as well as the legislator in France, whom gave monitoring in the law to a public institution, the CSA. However, the very concept of quality in that context is ambiguous, and tools allowing oversight are often reduiced to the verification of owed legal duties with the content providers. The only tool universally used is the audience rating, yet often challenged since its first usage in France in the 1980s. The viewer, having a leading interest in this quality process, is only considered in its numbers by such a statistic approch. This study proposes to initiate a paradigm shift in order to place the viewer in the heart of the audiovisual product’s evaluation. Around the theories of enaction by Francisco Varela and the method of relativized conceptualization of Mioara Mugur-Schachter, the study of the emotionnal experience casts a new and original light on the conception of the viewer in a program evaluation setup. By focusing on the way the viewer guides its own perception through its personal history, its manner to interpret its environment and the influence of emotion in the construction of its relation to audiovisual products, the work exposed in this dissertation allows to place the viewer as an actor of the evaluation. The interviews carried out proove the individuality of each viewer in its personnal approach of audiovisual and the construction of criterias of its own, yet allows to define a multi-layered protocol usable as an indicator of the relation’s quality to audiovisual content in a broader context

“Liminal Spaces and The Disabled Body” explores Edmund Burke’s aesthetic paradigms as established in his An Enquiry into the Origin of Our Notions of the Sublime and the Beautiful to recover what disability meant for an eighteenth-century audience. I examine Burney’s Camilla and Eugenia’s disability as well as Dacre’s Zofloya and Victoria’s figurative hermaphroditism in terms of eighteenth-century views of deformity and physiognomy to argue that both Eugenia’s and Victoria’s deformities—Eugenia’s smallpox scars and injured leg and Victoria’s beautiful but too boldly delineated features—challenge the prevailing structures of aesthetics and expectations of feminine beauty. My thesis questions how eighteenth-century aesthetic theory constructs the modern concept of the “disabled” individual to argue that the female body with a disability or deformity surpasses the terms of submission and diminution instated by Burkean aesthetics. In turn, the disabled female gains purchase in literature due to her “liminal, between-categories status” as it strains masculine power structures and aesthetic and gender classification systems.

Abstract While the members of Ana’s extended family were being evaluated clinically, great strides were being made in mapping human chromosomes. The starting material for this work was a set of standard DNA samples from several dozen families that had been collected in the 1980s at the Centre d’Etude du Polymorphisme Humain (CEPH) in Paris and distributed to geneticists around the world. Using the CEPH samples facilitated the relative positioning of newly discovered markers-mostly short tandem repeat polymorphisms (stirps)-on the emerging chromosome maps. These maps are continually updated through an international cooperative effort, as part of the Human Genome Project. Much of the mapping is being done in France at a foundation called Genethon (the name-derived from “gene telethon”-reflects its support by the French equivalent of the Jerry Lewis telethons that helped fund the discovery of the gene responsible for muscular dystrophy); Another major mapper of stirps is a consortium of American scientists, many of whom are organized as the Cooperative Human Linkage Center.

Il s’agit soit de jeunes étrangères exilées en France (argentine : Le Bleu des abeilles, Laura Alcoba / iranienne : Comment peut-on être français ?, Chahdortt Djavann), soit d’une apprenante chinoise, étudiante en FLE dans son pays (Une fille Zhuang, Wei-Wei). Dans tous les cas, l’implication personnelle permet à la littérature de favoriser l’apprentissage linguistique. Un parallèle final avec une autre scène d’apprentissage d’un jeune Franco-Rwandais en Afrique (Petit pays, Gaël Faye) confirme le rôle déterminant de la lecture littéraire dans l’apprentissage intérieur.

Abstract Following the comparison of pre-Revolutionary France with the late twentieth century in chapter 1, this chapter is devoted to one of the great works of the French Enlightenment, Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopedia. Several articles in this work are identified as related to mock ritual, for instance, on French customs of the Middle Ages, seen by the authors as “farcical” and “grotesque,” or on seafaring. Judging from these examples, such rituals appear remote from the world of the encyclopedists and alien to eighteenth-century thought. The feast of fools, for instance, is relegated to a distant past, and there is the suggestion in the article on the “baptism of the tropic or of the line” that this ceremony should also be abolished. Expanding this inquiry to articles on coteries, immolation, meanness, and ridicule, however, reveals within the Encyclopedia a more intimate, and more disturbing, connection between mock ritual and Enlightenment reason itself.

The project is coordinated by AREVA NP GmbH with 20 partner organizations from Europe, one collaborator from USA and one collaborator from Russia: AEKI, Hungary; AREVA NP GmbH, Germany (coordination, WP2 leader); AREVA NP SAS, France; Bay Zoltan, Hungary; British Energy Generation Ltd., UK (WP7 leader); CEA, France (WP1 leader); EDF, France; IdS, France; INR, Romania; IWM, Germany; JRC, Netherlands (WP4 leader); NRI, Czech Republik; NRG, Netherlands; SCK-CEN, Belgium; Serco Assurance Technical Services, UK (WP3 and WP5 leader); University of Bristol, UK; University of Manchester, UK; Technatom, Spain; Vattenfall, Sweden (WP6 leader); VTT, Finland. Within STYLE (Structural integrity for lifetime management – non-RPV components) realistic failure models for some of the key components will be identified. The range of assessment tools considered will include those for assessment of component failure by advanced fracture mechanics analyses validated on small and large scale experiments, quantification of weld residual stresses by numerical analysis and by measurements, stress corrosion crack initiation/ growth effects and assessment of RCPB components (excluding the reactor pressure vessel) under dynamic and seismic loading. Based on theoretical and experimental results, performance assessment and further development of simplified engineering assessment methods (EAM) will be carried out considering both deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Integrity assessment case studies and large scale demonstration experiments will be performed on Mock-ups of safety-relevant components. These will include a repair weld in an aged butt-welded austenitic pipe, a dissimilar narrow gap TIG weld (following the EPR design) and a cladded ferritic pipe. Moreover experiments on specimens and feature test pieces will be carried out to support the large scale Mock-up analyses. The end product of the project (“STYLE TOOLS”) will comprise best practice guidelines on the use of advanced tools, on improvement and qualification of EAM as a part of European Leak-before-break (LBB) procedures and on life time management of the integrity of RCPB components in European nuclear power plants. The project will interact with the European Network of Excellence NULIFE.

The underlying aim of the project is to provide recommendations for a good practice approach for the integrity assessment (especially testing) of tough dissimilar metal welds as part of overall ductile integrity analyses; this has been presented in the project overview [1]. Experience on typical DMWs concerning manufacturing, residual stresses, flaw assessment and testing have been reviewed. The specimens were taken from mock-ups of welded plates. Three DMWs design variants have been covered: narrow gap DMW with Ni-52, DMW with austenitic steel buttering and a DMW with Nienriched austenitic steel buttering. Mechanical characterization and fracture mechanics testing (CT, SEN(B) and SEN(T) specimens) have been performed. Interpretation of the test has required numerical analysis since the standard ASTM E1820 [2] (CT, SEN(B)) and guidelines dealing with SEN(T) [3][4] are not directly intended to cover DMW. The motivation of the project and its results are generally presented and discussed.

The new EPR™ Evolutionary high-Power nuclear Reactor is based on the best design concepts of French and German experiences over the past thirty years in power plant design construction and operation. In the framework of detailed engineering phase of plant construction in Finland (Olkiluoto 3) and in France (Flamanville 3), various investigations were led to improve the knowledge of hydraulics in innovative Reactor Pressure Vessel internals. A specific attention has been paid to hydraulics in Control Rod Guide Assembly (CRGA), which is an innovative component derived from the KONVOI design but adapted to the EPR™ design. In order to assess the hydraulic behavior of the EPR™ CRGA, a complementary experimental approach was developed by EDF and AREVA. Two mock-ups, representative of the full-scale EPR™ Control Rod Guide Assembly, were designed: MAGALY mock-up using real prototype of CRGA within AREVA’s engineering teams and PHACETIE mock-up at same scale but dedicated to a more analytic approach designed by EDF. The aim of the paper is to present the tests performed on two mock-ups to characterize the hydraulic behavior of this innovative EPR™ CRGA. At first, a comparison of the two mock-ups was done. The benchmark showed that the two mock-ups feature similar hydraulic behavior. The head losses evaluated along the experimental devices are practically identical. Moreover, the results showed that the global hydraulic forces applied to the Rod Cluster Control Assembly (RCCA) just up to the Upper Core Plate (UCP) are in a very good agreement. The good comparison between the two mock-ups strengthens the hydraulic characterization methods of the hydraulics in EPR™ CRGA. Specific studies were also led on the two mock-ups. The MAGALY mock-up was used to characterize the impact of the EPR™ operating conditions on the CRGA hydraulics behavior and especially on the vibrations and the drag forces applied to RCCA. Complementary measurements by using Laser Velocimetry techniques (PIV and LDV) were carried out on the PHACETIE mock-up allowing an evaluation of the velocity field inside the CRGA. The results obtained thanks to the two mock-ups allowed AREVA and EDF to have a good knowledge of the hydraulics behavior in the EPR™ CRGA. In a next step, further studies will be performed in order to deepen the knowledge of the vibratory behavior of the RCCA and the control rod drop time.

It consists of improving the quality of education and increasing the efficiency of the educational process by using new educational technologies and advanced teaching methods. The first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) projects democratized access via learning platforms characterized by open access to often unlicensed contentThe development of digital technology has stimulated the development of online courses open to science, and to respond to the handicaps affecting some students. The training (MOOC) is open to everyone, via the Internet, offered by university establishments in order to offer everyone the opportunity to learn or update their knowledge.American universities (MIT, OpenCourseWare, etc.) have developed academic initiatives to make their courses visible on the web, as have organizations like COURSERA. MOOCs contribute to knowledge sharing by making their educational resources available in French with FUN-MOOC. However, there are still many unresolved issues related to the course design. In this article, we give an overview of existing platforms in France and the United States, presenting their characteristics and their relationships with digital documentation. Many universities have asked their students to take MOOC courses, but these devices have become veritable information portals. We will be interested in new digital production methods by evaluating via predominant macro-criteria such as: -access and ergonomics, the credibility and the certification of institutions and information research services,

The paper presents results of a sub-task of the STYLE project currently running within the 7th Framework EU programme by way of an overview of deterministic engineering assessment methods (EAM) used for evaluation of flawed nuclear plant components, as used in various European countries (Germany, France, UK, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Spain, Finland and Sweden). Within STYLE, several mock-up experiments are being performed on specimens containing structural features. Structural features being considered include (1) dissimilar metal welds, (2) repair welds, and (3) austenitic cladding on a ferritic pipe. The overview thus focuses on the evaluation of flaws contained within each of these three types of features. Information on the procedures and codes applied in the various countries are given: KTA standard, ASME Code in Germany; ZG Appendix of RCC-M, A16 Appendix of RCC-MRx, and App. 5.4–5.6 of RSE-M in France; R6 in the UK; BS7910, R6 in the Netherlands; VERLIFE, ASME Code in the Czech Republic; ASME Code in Spain; SSM Handbook, ASME Code in Finland; and SSM Handbook, ASME Code, ProSACC in Sweden. An overview and brief description of the different methods is included in the paper, highlighting the commonalities and differences among the various approaches.

Within the framework of European project STYLE (Structural integrity for lifetime management), fracture tests on two large scale pipes containing a through wall crack have been performed. Two Mock-ups have been tested: MU1 is a narrow gap Inconel Dissimilar Metals, provided and designed by AREVA France, and MU2 is a an austenitic steel butt-weld with a thermally aged weld repair austenitic weld, provided by EDF British Energy. The four-points bending tests were carried out by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), in order to study the mechanical properties and integrity of component such as welding pipes. A through wall crack was machined in the both pipes. After a fatigue pre-cracking step carried out at RT, the monotonic fracture test was performed (at 300°C on MU1). Optical camera and Electrical Potential Drop Method have allowed following the crack growth during fatigue and final fracture stages. The observations made post-mortem showed ductile tearing of a few millimeters in those pipes. The first part of this paper is devoted to the four-points bending tests. The second part of this paper deals with first numerical analysis related to the Mock-up-1. Previous results concerning the mechanical characterizations of the constitutive materials are discussed. Fracture mechanics small scale specimens are interpreted using FE Analysis to obtain the fracture parameters used in global approaches. First computation is shown on the Mock-up-1 in order to predict the behavior of the large scale test mechanical and fracture behavior.

Abstract Macrosegregation in large steel ingots is a known phenomenon: it corresponds to an uneven distribution of alloying elements in the bulk of the as-solidified ingot, over macroscopic scales, caused by the difference in solubility of these elements in the liquid and solid phases. As the ingot solidifies, these elements (mainly carbon, sulfur and phosphorus) concentrate in the liquid phase and are carried to the top of the ingot by convective currents. This process produces large regions of heterogeneity that can negatively impact the mechanical properties of the resulting steel. Westinghouse is in charge of the manufacture of twelve steam generators (SG) for Electricité de France (EDF), for which the main forged parts are made of 20MND5 low alloy steel. Due to the context and concerns in France, and more broadly in the nuclear industry, on carbon macrosegregation in large scale forgings, Westinghouse led studies with the forgemaster The Japan Steel Works (JSW) in order to assess the influence of carbon content on mechanical properties of such forgings. The present paper aims at introducing the investigation work carried out by Westinghouse, in partnership with JSW, in order to analyze the effect of increasing carbon on the 20MND5 low-alloy steel tensile and impact toughness properties. This work was performed through: - A thorough review of the existing literature; - The manufacture of forged plates mock-ups, metallurgically representative of the SG channel head, containing various carbon contents (namely 0.18wt.%, 0.21wt.%, 0.26wt.% and 0.29wt.%); - The testing of above plates to assess the evolution of tensile (tensile strength Rm, 0.2% yield strength Rp0.2 and percentage elongation after fracture) and impact properties (absorbed energy and transition temperature).

The EPR is an Evolutionary high-Power Reactor which is based on the best French and German experience of the past twenty years in plant design construction and operation. In the present detailed engineering phase of the plant under construction in Finland (Okiluoto 3) and in France (Flamanville 3), some actions were conducted in order to improve the knowledge of the hydraulic behavior of the innovative Reactor Pressure Vessel internals (RPV). The RPV internals are mainly derived from former French N4 or German Konvoi with some evolutions to take into account the operating experience. Design and validation of the internals were performed within AREVA’s engineering teams, which develop state of the art methods in the field of thermohydraulic testing. The experimental validation program was closely followed by EDF. Moreover, an EDF R&D project, whose results are not addressed here, was held to consolidate the RPV internals conception. The aim of the paper is to present the hydraulic tests performed on mock-ups to characterize the hydraulic behavior of the innovative EPR Reactor Pressure Vessel internals, and to introduce the role of these tests in the global conception process of the EPR RPV internals (CFD code qualification, design validation, database...). The qualification of the CFD computer codes will be described in a forthcoming paper. Three different mock-ups are presented to illustrate these tests: • JULIETTE for the reactor pressure vessel lower internals, • ROMEO for the reactor pressure vessel upper internals, • MAGALY for the design of the skeleton-type control rod guide assembly.

En este trabajo se presenta una propuesta formativa transversal en formato MOOC (Massive Online Open Courses). El principal objetivo fue diseñar una herramienta de formación en mentoría dirigida, fundamentalmente, a profesorado y alumnado. Para su elaboración se contó con el apoyo técnico del Centro Universitario de Formación e Innovación Educativa (CUFIE), desde donde se puso en marcha la II Convocatoria para la elaboración de MOOC de la Universidade da Coruña 2018/19. El curso “Mentoría en la Universidad. Formación de las Figuras Implicadas (MUFFIM)”, se elaboró desde octubre de 2019 hasta abril de 2021. Está programado para realizar en cuatro semanas y tiene una duración total de 20 horas. Consta de cuatro módulos que desarrollan contenidos relativos a cómo se sitúa la mentoría en el escenario actual de la universidad, su conceptualización y el desarrollo de algunas competencias necesarias para asumir algún rol dentro de un proceso de mentoría. El número de inscritos ha sido de 440 personas, de las cuales la mayoría son docentes (40,2%) y estudiantes universitarios (23,47%), de 19 países, entre los que destacan los Iberoamericanos, Francia, Alemania, Portugal, Rusia y Andorra. Los principales resultados muestran la gran acogida por parte de los/as participantes que consideran importante trabajar estas temáticas en el contexto universitario.

Within the framework of the cleaning operation of the Marcoule reprocessing plant UP1 (France), the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) developed a measurement system for 225-liter drums filled with bituminized radioactive sludge originating from the effluent treatment. This work was carried out for the CODEM, which is an economic interest group made up of CEA, EDF (the French public utility) and COGEMA (the operator of UP1). CODEM is in charge of UP1 dismantling operations, especially waste retrieval. The bituminized waste drums mainly contain plutonium, americium, uranium, curium and various beta emitters among which some are responsible for significant gamma irradiation, such as 137Cs. The aim of this system is to sort the packages according to their radioactive level, so as to direct them towards the French Aube Center, which is a surface repository. This means they must meet the acceptance criteria related to their activities. Otherwise, they will remain in interim storage in Marcoule, pending the choice of a final mode of management (e.g. underground disposal). The assay system, called UTM (the French acronym for “Measurement and Sorting Unit”), consists of three stations devoted to active gamma imaging, gamma-ray spectroscopy and combined passive / active neutron measurements. After nearly 3 years of optimization and design studies [1], the CEA has built a scale one mock-up of UTM, called SYMETRIC. The purpose was to validate the performances formerly assessed by numerical simulation, mainly with the computer code MCNP [2]. We present here the experimental results obtained with SYMETRIC for five real bituminized waste drums. These confirm the expected performances in the measurement time assigned for each assay, which is limited to 1200 seconds. With the help of gamma imaging, we are able to determine the density of the bituminous mix with an uncertainty of ± 10% for a confidence level of 95%. We can also measure the filling height with an accuracy of ± 2 cm. These data allow us to correct matrix effects in gamma and neutron measurements. For these assays, the main results concern the detection limits and measurement uncertainties on 241Am, 239Pu and 240Pu. These radioisotopes represent the major part of the total alpha activity, which is a very sensitive parameter for surface disposal limited to a maximum level of about 10 GBq per drum. The alpha activity must be calculated after a radioactive decay of 300 years, which is the survey period of the French Aube Center. If we can detect the former isotopes, the uncertainties on their measured activities are roughly 50%. If not, the detection limits are around a few GBq. These performances are sufficient to allow the sorting of the drums to either surface repository or interim storage. However, in order to increase the margin between the detection limits and the acceptance criterion on the total alpha activity, additional studies on the optimization of the measurement performances will be carried out. In this context, the experience gained with the SYMETRIC mock-up will be very helpful.
