Анотація:

O presente artigo propõe discutir as marcas do Movimento da Matemática Moderna (MMM) presentes em novas fontes analisadas nos materiais utilizados e/ou confeccionados pela professora Myriam Boardman de Oliveira, que atuou no ensino primário em Minas Gerais entre as décadas de 1060 e de 1980. Fundamentam esta investigação: Prost (1996), Bloch (2002), Choppin (2002), Chervel (1990), Chartier (1990). Na perspectiva de uma pesquisa em história da educação matemática (HEM), optou-se por um aprofundamento em Valente (2007; 2013), Leme da Silva e Valente (2014), Oliveira (2011; 2015). O confronto dos resultados de Mendonça (2016) com os nossos evidenciam o estudo das figuras geométricas com a utilização da teoria de conjuntos, principalmente pela linguagem; precisão da linguagem utilizada e com a utilização, mesmo que de forma introdutória, de conceitos topológicos. A geometria euclidiana é evidenciada com atividades tanto de construção (utilizando compasso, régua, transferidor) e de observação com instrumentos diversos (palitos, barbantes, entre outros). Alguns pontos defendidos pelo ideário do MMM estavam presentes no material da professora, mesmo não sendo tão evidentes.

Анотація:

Despite the recent multiplication of studies in found footage cinema, the fog surrounding the figure of Myriam Borsoutsky remains thick. This article elaborates the rare extant information about her work to retrace an important chapter in the history of found footage cinema in France, in which women have played a major role. In an attempt to delineate a specifically female genealogy in the history of French compilation film, Myriam's work is studied alongside that of Nicole Vedrès, and situated in the cultural context of a net of relationships that includes other women, for instance Denise Tual and Yannick Bellon, as well as such masters of French cinema as Pierre Braunberger, Sacha Guitry, Henri Langlois, Alain Resnais, André Bazin, Chris Marker, Jean-Luc Godard, and Michel Leiris. A detailed analysis of two major works in this genealogy, Paris 1900 (dir. Nicole Vedrès, 1947) and Bullfight (dir. Myriam and Pierre Braunberger, 1951), draws upon Vedrès's own writings and André Bazin's critical notes on the films. The last section addresses the meaning of the neologism neomontage, coined by Bazin in his review of Bullfight to describe Myriam's “diabolical” editing abilities.

Анотація:

Este trabajo se inscribe dentro de una mirada de género sobre la construcción colectiva de la disciplina arqueológica en los últimos 65 años. Para llevar a cabo este objetivo se propuso analizar la historia individual de una de las grandes referentes en la materia en los Andes del Sur, la Dra. Myriam Tarragó, con el fin de articular su polifacética carrera y desempeño académico con contextos sociales y de producción científica específicos, desde fines de la década de 1950 hasta la actualidad. Agente clave y testigo del estado actual de la disciplina, se busca a través de sus recuerdos, la lectura de sus producciones escritas más relevantes y la investigación de sus papeles personales, contextualizar su experiencia académica sin interrupciones, aunque discontinuada en Argentina por varios procesos políticos que se dieron en el país hasta el regreso de la democracia en 1983. Como pionera en diversas esferas del ámbito académico, docencia universitaria y gestión, su itinerario permite evaluar su experiencia de romper el “techo de cristal” y de abrir paso a una nueva generación de profesionales mujeres arqueólogas en momentos convulsionados de la reciente historia argentina.

Configurado en el territorio liminal que se abre entre la piedra y el plano, entre el zigurat Etemenanki y sus representaciones, el mito de Babel se erige como vertebrador de posibles, miríada de prácticas, proyectos y arquitecturas. A partir de la noción de “imagen arquitectónica”, el presente artículo trata de profundizar en las traducciones visuales del mito babélico y su relación con las experiencias urbanas comunitarias desarrolladas durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970. En último término, se tratará de ensayar un acercamiento a la problemática de la traducción visual que enhebre, en su metodología, imagen y experiencia, ahondando en las tareas de apuntalamiento de la imagen emancipatoria anunciadas por Susan Buck-Morss. Built up in the liminal territory between the stone and the blueprint, between the Etemenanki ziggurat and its representations, the myth of Babel stands as a vertebrator of possibilities, myriad of practices, projects and constructions. Starting from the notion of “architectural image”, the present article tries to deepen into the visual translations of the babelic myth and its relation with the communitarian urban experiences developed during the decades of 1960 and 1970. Ultimately, it will try to rehearse an approach to the problematic of the visual translation that enhebre, in its methodology, image and experience, deepening in the tasks of propping up the emancipatory image announced by Susan Buck-Morss.

Resumo Estudos sobre desigualdade na Ciência Econômica formam um campo amplo e consolidado, e são majoritariamente direcionados às desigualdades econômicas. Nas primeiras duas décadas do século XXI, movimentos sociais em diversos países fizeram reacender o debate, de tal forma que eminentes economistas passaram a incorporar questões sociais às suas análises sobre as desigualdades econômicas. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar que esta forma multidisciplinar de analisar as desigualdades foi empregada de forma pioneira por Gunnar Myrdal ainda na década de 1960, período em que os estudos sobre o tema eram muito correlacionados a métricas de renda e riqueza. A partir deste resgate, o artigo argumenta que a ampla gama de desigualdades sociais não surge apenas como uma consequência da distribuição desigual de renda. Por isso, sugere que o debate sobre a redução das desigualdades deve incorporar análises mais amplas tais como aquelas sugeridas por Myrdal. O artigo conclui que a efetiva redução das desigualdades sociais ocorre por meio da execução de profundas e lentas reformas estruturais.

Анотація:

Objective: Literature started to point out essential parameters involving reciprocating instruments through clinical and laboratory essays. Looking into apical debris extrusion, incidence of instrument breakage, canal centering ability, apical zipping, a myriad of information has become available. The aim of this review is to revisit the literature and compare reciprocal and continuous rotation techniques.Methods: A review of current literature may collect recent findings.Conclusion: Reciprocating systems are similar in some aspects in comparison to rotational systems, with regards to cleaning ability, centered preparations, cleaning ability, reduction of Enterococcus faecalis and dentine defects. On the other hand, being single use and enhanced resistance to fatigue, together with novel methods to treat the alloy may lead to the thought that reciprocal systems are an excellent aid to root canal preparation. However, more needs to be understood about this new era of instruments to verify, long term and especially in vivo, the success and failure when these instruments are used.

Si les deux extrémités du continuum chronologique de la pratique photographique indienne – la période 1840-1910 d’une part, la fin du xxe siècle d’autre part – ont fait l’objet de recherches, on ignore encore comment, de manière concrète et détaillée, le médium, initialement aux mains des élites britannique et indienne, est devenu un phénomène de grande ampleur. À partir de l’étude croisée de diverses sources (visuelles, orales, écrites) rassemblées à la faveur d’une enquête de terrain de plusieurs mois, dont la logique méthodologique fait l’objet d’une présentation circonstanciée, cet article apporte un éclairage sur l’histoire de la photographie dans un espace géographique encore peu étudié, le sud de l’Inde. Avec Coimbatore – grand centre industriel – comme point focal, il dresse un panorama chronologique des évolutions géographiques et sociales de la pratique photographique au niveau micro. Construit autour de trois périodes clés, l’article propose ainsi une lecture spatialisée – focalisée sur la répartition géographique des studios, et de la consommation photographique – et socialisée – relative à l’évolution des profils des photographes et des clients – du processus de démocratisation de l’accès à la photographie à Coimbatore.

Cette recherche s'intéresse aux pratiques d'écritures des danseurs contemporains, à travers l'étude d'un corpus constitué de quatre ouvrages récemment publiés par Dominique Dupuy (2011), Enora Rivière (2013), Myriam Lefkowitz (2015), et Noé Soulier (2016). Leur parution manifeste autant qu'il participe d'un contexte perceptif et esthétique, mais aussi institutionnel et éditorial qui donne place à la voix des artistes chorégraphiques. En effet, ces textes ont pour point commun d'être élaborés à partir de la parole des danseurs, qu'elle soit recueillie lors d'entretiens, puisée dans une conférence performée ou qu'elle soit le motif par lequel s'éprouve l'imaginaire d'une instantanéité chorégraphique. Ainsi, l'élaboration de ces ouvrages engage pour leurs auteurs une réflexion sur les valeurs acquises par la verbalisation comme par la scription dans les pratiques de danse. Parce que l'écriture est envisagée comme un processus transversal, non spécifiquement textuel, qui introduit des effets d'écart dans la relation que le danseur entretient à l'acte de danse, nous convoquons pour analyser ce corpus la pensée de Derrida ; ceci nous conduit à qualifier les phénomènes d'enchâssement et de "différance" manifestés par ce corpus comme relevant des « écrits de danseurs ». Ceci permet d'interroger la fonction de ces discours, considérés comme des prises de parole face à la doxa d'un mutisme inhérent à la figure scénique du danseur : d'une part, l'écriture témoigne des expériences propres au métier de danseur, et contribue à alimenter voire à renouveler les représentations afférentes à leur statut artistique et professionnel. D'autre part, la publication d'un objet livresque requalifie l'auctorialité du danseur au regard du chorégraphe comme des œuvres qu'il interprète : ceci participe à circonscrire un régime discursif spécifique, que nous désignons, à la suite de Foucault, comme une « fonction-danseur » active dans l'écriture. Finalement, notre analyse considère les interactions entre énonciation du geste et imaginaire langagier, lorsque morphologie lexicale et corporelle viennent à se confondre. À la suite de trois propositions théoriques (Godfroy, Louppe, Bernard) qui postulent la réversibilité des expériences kinésiques et sémiotiques, nous interrogeons l'activité de réception de ces ouvrages, lorsque les analyses cherchent à y déceler l'empreinte d'une « gestualité du dire ». Notre hypothèse considère que celle-ci relève d'un mécanisme fictionnaire, déployé tant dans le processus sensoriel par lequel les danseurs élaborent une parole sur leur danse que dans l'activité de lecture. Ceci souligne le fonctionnement empathique qui soutient notre fréquentation des textualités en danse ; au regard de la place occupée par les imaginaires littéraires et scripturaires dans l'élaboration des récits de gestes, tout comme dans l'émergence de dynamiques métaphoriques. Celles-ci soutiennent l'élaboration de logiques corporelles (Bolens) qui façonnent la corporéité du danseur qui s'énonce autant que les modalités narratives par lesquelles elle s'écrit. Cette étude prend place à la croisée de préoccupations portées par des analyses kinésiques comme linguistiques, selon une approche poïétique qui s'insère dans des interactions disciplinaires, artistiques et méthodologiques nombreuses entre études en danse et études littéraires
This research focuses on the writing practices of contemporary dancers, through the study of a corpus made up of four works recently published by Dominique Dupuy (2011), Enora Rivière (2013), Myriam Lefkowitz (2015), and Noé Soulier (2016). Their publication manifests as much as it participates in a perceptual and aesthetic context, but also an institutional and editorial one which gives place to the voice of the artists. Indeed, these texts have in common to be elaborated from the words of the dancers, whether it is collected during interviews, drawn from a lecture performed or whether it is the reason by which the feeling is experienced. imaginary of a choreographic immediacy. Thus, the elaboration of these works engages for their authors a reflection on the values acquired by the verbalization as by the scription in the practices of dance. Because writing is respected as a transversal process, not judged textual, which introduced effects of gap in the relationship that the dancer maintains to the act of dance, we summon to analyze this corpus the thought of Derrida; this leads us to qualify the phenomena of embeddedness and differance affected by this corpus as relevant to “dancers' writings”. This makes it possible to question the function of these discourses, translated as speaking out against the doxa of a silence inherent in the scenic figure of the dancer: on the one hand, the writing bears witness to the experiences specific to the profession of dancer, and contributes to nourishing or even renewing the representations relating to their artistic and professional status. On the other hand, the publication of a bookish object requalifies the authorship of the dancer with regard to the choreographer as the works he interprets : this contributes to circumscribing a specific discursive regime, which we designate, following Foucault, as a “dancer-function” active in writing. Finally, our analysis considers the interactions between the enunciation of the gesture and the linguistic imagination, when the lexical and body morphology come to merge. Following three theoretical propositions (Godfroy, Louppe, Bernard) which postulate the reversibility of kinesic and semiotic experiences, we question the activity of reception of these works, when the analyzes seek to decelerate the imprint of a "gestuality to say”. Our hypothesis considers that this stems from a fictional mechanism, deployed both in the sensory process by which the dancers adopt a word about their dance and in the reading activity. This underlines the empathic functioning that supports our frequentation of textualities in dance; about the place occupied by literary and scriptural imaginaries in the elaboration of narratives of gestures, as well as in the emergence of metaphorical dynamics. These require the development of bodily logics (Bolens) that shape the corporeality of the dancer who is expressed as much as the narrative modalities by requiring it to be written. This study takes place at the crossroads of concerns carried by kinesic and linguistic analyses, according to a poietic approach which fits into numerous disciplinary, artistic and methodological interactions between dance studies and literary studies

The present work has as objective to reconstitute the biographical profile and pedagogical practices of the teacher Myriam Coeli de Ara?jo Dantas da Silveira, in the Professionalizing scholl of the Federal Net of the Rio Grande do Norte, in the 60 s years. The choice of the period is justified by being this the time of important changes in the Education, as an example we have the implementation of the Law of Lines of direction and Bases of the National Education, the 4.024/1961. This teacher contributed for the formation of the potiguar s society scholar, acting in the press, the journalism and the teaching, activity that I analyzed in this study. How the pedagogical practices of her had happened in the 60 s years? This question guided the research and, in the search to answer it I used as source the Public Archive of the Rio grande do Norte, the Historical and Geographic Institute of the Rio grande do Norte, the periodicals of the time, photographs, sketch books of Myriam Coeli and interviews with familiar, former-pupils and contemporaries of this master. I verified that her performance always was based in the educational changes lived deeply for her, carrying through a series of activities in the school as: elaboration of the annual program of Portuguese Language, organization of literary competitions and an practice based on the effective norms without leaving to unite respect and the understanding for the pupils. Of this form, the analysis is not summarized only to the practices of a teacher, but the configuration, in part, of the Rio Grande do Norte educational history in a determined period, the 60 s years
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo reconstituir o perfil biogr?fico e as pr?ticas pedag?gicas da professora Myriam Coeli de Ara?jo Dantas da Silveira, na Escola Profissionalizante da Rede Federal de Ensino do Rio Grande do Norte, na d?cada de 1960. A escolha do per?odo ? justificada por ser esse um tempo de importantes mudan?as na Educa??o, a exemplo da implementa??o da Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educa??o Nacional, a 4.024/1961. Essa professora contribuiu para a forma??o da sociedade letrada potiguar, atuando na imprensa, no jornalismo e no magist?rio, atividade que analisei neste estudo. Como se davam as suas pr?ticas pedag?gicas na d?cada de 1960? Este questionamento norteou a pesquisa e, na busca para respond?-lo, utilizei como fonte o acervo do Arquivo P?blico do Rio Grande do Norte, do Instituto Hist?rico e Geogr?fico do Rio Grande do Norte, os jornais da ?poca, fotografias, cadernos de apontamentos de Myriam Coeli e entrevistas com familiares, ex-alunos e contempor?neos dessa mestra. L'objectif de cette recherche est de montrer que les prix monétaires jouent un rôle déterminant dans l'explication de certains phénomènes économiques à la fois réels et monétaires. Pour ce faire, nous présentons des schémas théoriques issus de l'interprétation critique de quatre ouvrages représentatifs de la pensée monétaire : L'équilibre monétaire de Gunnar Myrdal (1931), la Théorie de la monnaie et de la banque de Joseph Schumpeter (1970), et le Traité sur la monnaie (1930) ainsi que la Théorie générale (1936) de John Maynard Keynes. Nous montrons que, si la monnaie est considérée d'emblée, les prix agissent à la fois sur le marché de biens et sur le marché monétaire. Le déséquilibre des marchés apparaît comme l'état courant de l'économie alors que l'équilibre monétaire est une situation particulière. Nous montrons que l'étude des prix relatifs et du niveau général des prix relève d'une même théorie monétaire
The aim of this research is to investigate the role that monetary prices play in the explanation of both real and monetary economic phenomena. To this purpose, I present a theoretical framework resulting from the critical interpretation of four prominent works in monetary theory: Gunnar Myrdal’s Monetary Equilibrium (1931), Joseph Schumpeter’s Das Wesen des Geldes (1970), John Maynard Keynes’s Treatise on Money (1930) as well as his General Theory (1936). I argue that, if money is considered as a postulate, prices influence the market for goods and the market for money at the same time. Market disequilibrium emerges as the typical state of affairs, while monetary equilibrium is a particular situation. I show that both the study of relative prices and of the general price level involve the same monetary theory

Den här avhandlingen spårar det temat genom tre genrer i den svenska litteraturen, från sextiotalet och framåt: den självbiografiska barndomsskildringen, reseskildringen och science fiction-romanen. De olika genrerna erbjuder olika möjligheter för en författare att diskutera och gestalta frihetstemat, explicit och implicit. Skilda narratologiska utgångspunkter skapar skilda förutsättningar. Genomgående frågeställningar är vilka hinder som finns för att friheten ska kunna uppnås, vilka utvägar mot friheten som ändå existerar och vilka innebörder frihetsbegreppet ges. Avslutningsvis diskuteras resultaten i förhållande till de skilda genrevillkoren men även till det som texterna har gemensamt, exempelvis utopiska drag, mötet med det obekanta och främmande, sökandet efter en subjektiv sanning eller 1968-årens tidsanda. På så sätt kan något sägas om den sköna litteraturens särart jämfört med andra slags texter.
Freedom is an important theme of the twentieth century, perhaps particularly during the decades around 1970, that time of struggle for liberation, the rebellion against the old ways, of individualism and collectivism. This thesis traces that theme through three genres of Swedish literature, from the sixties onwards: the autobiographical childhood novel, the travelogue and the science fiction novel. The different genres offer different possibilities for an author to discuss and depict the theme of freedom, explicitly and implicitly. Different narratological starting points create different conditions. Some returning issues are which restrictions on, opportunities for and meanings of freedom are visible in the texts. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to the different conventions of genre but also in relation to what the texts have in common, such as features of utopia, the encounter with the unfamiliar and strange, the search for a subjective truth or the zeitgeist of the year 1968. In that way, something can be said about the specific nature of fictive or partly fictive texts compared to other kinds of prose.

Cette thèse s’intéresse aux relations entre l’activité scientifique des économistes et leurs valeurs ou croyances privées. Elles doivent être réexaminées en raison des évolutions techniques qu’a connue la science économique à partir des années trente, accroissant la revendication des économistes à l’objectivité malgré leur proximité grandissante vis-à-vis du pouvoir politique. A l’aide de trois études de cas basées sur des recherches d’archive, nous montrons comment les valeurs privées pénètrent le processus de théorisation, résistent à des techniques de plus en plus sophistiquées de confrontation avec les faits, et sont utilisées pour formuler des politiques économiques. Les exemples de Gunnar Myrdal, Jacob Marschak, et Milton Friedman prouvent que les relations entre science et valeurs ne sont ni unilatérales ni linéaires et qu’il est impossible de séparer clairement les valeurs politiques des croyances sur le monde tel qu’il est (les valeurs cognitives). Nous étudions donc l’interaction de ces deux types de valeurs au sein de la vision du monde de l’économiste, là ou des contradictions, des dilemmes ou un renforcement mutuel entre valeurs privées et valeurs scientifiques peuvent intervenir. This dissertation deals with the relationships between economists’ scientific activities and their private values. Their re-examination is made necessary by the technical evolutions within economic science from the thirties on, which increased economists’ claim for objectivity in spite of their growing proximity with the political process. With the help of three case studies based on archive research, we show how values enter the theorizing process, survive an increasingly technically demanding process of confrontation with facts, and are used in the definition of economic policies. The examples of Gunnar Myrdal, Jacob Marschak and Milton Friedman prove that the relationships between science and values are neither simple nor unilateral, and that it is impossible to separate clearly political values from beliefs on the world as it is (that is, cognitive values). We thus study how these two types of values interact within the economist’s worldview, where contradictions, dilemmas or mutual reinforcement between private and scientific beliefs take place. We also show that methodological choices are crucial for the links between values and science, since they can act as a shield against values or, on the contrary, as their channel into science. We finally demonstrate that private beliefs are necessary to the definition of economic policy and that our three economists think that their political beliefs are scientifically based, which results in a merging between the two strands of thinking

This work examines the transcripts of the trials of Myra Hindley (1966) and Rosemary West (1995). It adopts a feminist perspective to expose the constructions of femininity that were manifest in the cases posed by the prosecution and defence and the judges' summings up. Consequently, it draws primarily upon two theoretical bases: first, the now abundant feminist criminological literature and, second, work on the criminal court process; for example, evidence theory and work on case construction, and the functions and roles of the judge and jury, most of which has not as yet addressed issues of gender. Examination of the trials reveals that many of the characteristics associated with femininity identified by previous feminist work were pervasive during both trials. However, whilst the nature of constructions of femininity deployed are the same in spite of the thirty years that passed between the trials, their usage is not. Whilst it might be expected that the progression of feminist work would have reduced the strength of the presence of gendered norms in the courtroom, the author will show that counsel's use and reliance on gendered stereotypes is greater and more sophisticated in Rosemary West's case than in that of Myra Hindley. The difference between the use of gendered stereotypes in the two cases is a consequence of the means by which they appear. Constructions of femininity in Rosemary West's case formed part of the case, they constituted themes in the narrative created and presented by counsel. Whilst similar norms were present in Myra Hindley's trial, they were less frequently explicitly utilised by counsel. The author suggests that the reasons for the difference are twofold. First, that the stronger and more prolific evidence in Myra Hindley's trial meant that prosecution counsel relied less on gender stereotyping to make a convincing case, whereas the evidentiary gap in Rosemary West's trial was filled with evidence and suggestions pertaining to her failure to fit stereotypes of femininity. Secondly, feminist literature, knowledge and findings were absorbed and internalised by the legal profession by the 1990s, providing counsel with knowledge on how best to fill the evidentiary gap.

This thesis provides the first rigorous history of the concept of midlife crisis. It highlights the close connections between understandings of the life course and social change. It reverses accounts of popularization by showing how an idea moved from the public sphere into academia. Above all, it uncovers the feminist origins of the concept and places this in a historically little-studied tradition of writing about middle age that rejected the gendered "double standard of aging." Constructions of middle age and life-planning were not always oppressive, but often used for feminist purposes. The idea of midlife crisis became popular in the United States with journalist Gail Sheehy's Passages (1976), a critique of Erik Erikson's male-centered model of ego development and psychoanalytic constructions of gender and identity more generally. Drawing on mid-century notions of middle life as the time of a woman's entry into the public sphere, Sheehy's midlife crisis defined the onset of middle age, for men and women, as the end of traditional gender roles. As dual-earner families replaced the male breadwinner model, Passages circulated widely, read by women and men of different generations, including social scientists. Three psychoanalytic experts-Daniel Levinson, George Vaillant, and Roger Gould-rebutted Sheehy by putting forward a male-only concept of midlife as the end of a man's family obligations; they banned women from reimagining their lives. Though this became the dominant meaning of midlife crisis, it was not universally accepted. Feminist scholars, most famously the psychologist and ethicist Carol Gilligan, drew on women's experiences to challenge the midlife crisis, turning it into a sign of emotional instability, immaturity, and egotism. Resonating with widespread understandings of mental health and social responsibility, and confirmed by large-scale surveys in the late 1990s, this relegated the midlife crisis to a chauvinist cliché. It has remained a contested concept for negotiating the balances between work and life, production and reproduction into the present day.

Dans un premier temps, je cherche à constituer un lieu mnémonique par le biais de l'œuvre Noroît dans l'hippocampe. En second temps, je cherche à cristalliser un évènement singulier de l'histoire collective dans un lieu donné et la troisième exploration est de faire l'expérience d'un clivage culturel radical afin d'analyser la liberté que cette confrontation peut offrir. Un regard théorique sur les identités, les lieux, la mémoire, les lieux de mémoire, l'histoire et l'archive est effectué afin de développer en profondeur la question principale qui est : Comment une œuvre d'art peut s'inscrire dans un lieu de mémoire? L'œuvre finale est constituée de tout le corpus d'interventions créées durant mes quatre années au deuxième cycle.

AbstractAesthetic education with a writing focus has occurred in the United States through two vehicles: textbooks in classroom-based instruction or self-help books in extracurricular instruction. Writing self-help books, or texts which address a readership interested in learning about writing independent of a teacher or university, played a significant role in guiding countless individuals during the twentieth century and continue to do so today (For the purposes of this article, “self-help” refers exclusively to self-help literature offering advice about the act of writing and not to any of the myriad of other self-help topics [dieting, relationships, and so forth]). The evolution of these self-help books paralleled the development of college and university writing courses that arose early in the twentieth century: indeed, a powerful informal aesthetic education has been occurring through self-help books. In this chapter, I perform a textual analysis of five twentieth-century self-help books, all attracting substantial readership: Dorothea Brande’s Becoming a Writer (1934); Brenda Ueland’s If You Want to Write (1938); Peter Elbow’s Writing Without Teachers (1973); Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones (1986); and Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird (1995). An examination of these popular twentieth-century self-help books reveals four areas of overlapping content. Collectively, self-help books on writing address the role of the unconscious in composing, issues of control, the holistic nature of composing, and failures in traditional teaching, and they all formulate a broader argument about the universal ability of humans to be creative.

AbstractIn this chapter, I delve deeper into the role played by ‘cultures of migration’ in the development of migration aspirations in both Tinghir and Tangier, and how these cultures of migration interact with environmental factors. This chapter builds further on previous insights from migration systems theory, which posits that migration results in multiple flows of material goods, ideas and money (Mabogunje 1970; Levitt 1998). In other words, this theory states that migration results in more than exchanges and flows of people. By building further on the concept of ‘cumulative causation’ (Myrdal 1957), migration systems theory advances that migration results in the transformation of social and economic structures, facilitating more migration. This idea is crucial to fully understand the development of migration aspirations because it pays attention to how contextual feedback loops can either positively or negatively stimulate the further development of migration aspirations (De Haas 2010). Hence, cultures of migration are established through the information sent by emigrants that have left a given region and provide feedback on their migration experiences in the country of destination to their migrant networks living in their region of origin and which ultimately result in shared ideas and beliefs on migration in a particular region (Timmerman et al. 2014).

The current ASME/ANSI standard for pool/spa drain covers is relied upon as an effective guideline for drain system safety by pool industry practitioners, state building code commissions, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Spa and Pool Institute, and a myriad of pool safety sophisticates. In fact, it is a license to kill. To demonstrate its shortcomings in the dawn of its next revision, an ordinary steering wheel is shown to satisfy the current standard while exposing bathers to every known fatal drain cover scenario. The paper raises a new issue: ASME, ANSI and pool professionals may all be in legal jeopardy.

Second-generation PFBC combined cycle plants introduce additional dimensions of operational and configurational considerations over their first generation counterparts. With the capability to raise gas turbine inlet temperatures to state of the art and beyond, the second-generation systems introduce a matrix of parameters that require in-depth analysis before the plant design point can be determined. The interactions among turbine inlet temperature, turbine exhaust temperature, excess-air level, steam conditions, steam cycle participation, PFBC operating temperature, and the configuration of the heat recovery apparatus produce a myriad of possible combined-cycle plant configurations. This paper provides insight into how these parameters interact and how the correct selection of the parametric values can produce various plants of best efficiency, highest output, and simplest configuration.

Анотація:

The application of laser spectroscopy to the hostile, yet easily perturbed, environments of practical combustion devices is anticipated to afford considerable advances in combustion technology in the coming years. Of various laser approaches, coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) appears to be the most promising approach for the remote, spatially and temporally precise measurement of temperature and major species in practical combustion systems. Over the last several years, the development of CARS has progressed from simple flames of increasing complexity to practical application in afterburning jet engines, internal combustion engines, furnaces and a myriad of other devices. Considerable effort has been expended over this period to extend the capabilities and applicability of CARS, e.g. to higher pressures, to more particle laden systems, etc. In this presentation, recent research activities in our laboratory along these lines will be discussed.

Анотація:

In 1926, a 23-year old Maitland Bleecker submitted a successful proposal to the Curtiss Airplane and Motor Company for an experimental helicopter. As Project Engineer, Bleecker oversaw the design and construction of a full-scale prototype and myriad test flights between 1930 and 1931. Due to the dire Depression economy, a simple gear failure would kill the entire project. Soon afterward, Bleecker's car was broken into, his projector and flight films all stolen - and with them the tangible proof his helicopter had flown. "One day I walked out of the hangar, left the helicopter and ramjet there, and have no idea what became of either of them." The lost treasures of Maitland Bleecker are unquestionably vast; hopefully, this paper will reclaim many of them by showing the impact of his genius on future helicopter innovations, while further providing evidence that he did, indeed, invent the first flyable single-rotor helicopter.

Анотація:

In 1692, in the context of the Nine Years War (1689-1697), Admiral Tourville’s French fleet faced the Anglo-Dutch alliance along the Norman coast. Five large French men-of-war were reduced to ashes close to Tatihou island in St-Vaast-La Hougue bay (Manche county, France). Discovered in 1985, these shipwrecks have been excavated from 1990 to 1995 by Michel L’Hour and Élisabeth Veyrat, from the Département des Recherches Archéologiques Subaquatiques et Sous-Marines (DRASSM, Ministry of Culture). Among the numerous remains, fish bones were found in large quantities on one of the wrecks. Preliminary studies conducted between 1990 and 1992 by Myriam Sternberg determined that the fish remains were cod (Gadus morhua L.) which were reserved for food aboard. The data recovery during the year 2020-2021 allowed the acquisition of new knowledge on the supplying and the process carried out on this fish.
