Анотація:
A. Busching is one of the greatest European geographers of second half of the XVIII century. The most fundamental work – Neue Erdbeschreibung oder Universal Geographie (1754) – brought him worldwide fame only during his lifetime was reprinted eight times and has been translated into almost all European languages. A. Busching systematized geographic information is very valuable source of historical geography of Ukraine. Each new reissue of the information (including statistics) A. Busching meticulously update, detailed and changed with the times era. In the 60’s gave a lengthy description of Ukrainian lands Red Ruthenia as part of the Kingdom of Poland. In the 70’s he was first among European geographers who published a geographical description of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. In the 80’s A. Busching published a series of statistical-geographical studies of new data on the geography of population, economy, communications and commerce Western, Central and Southern Ukrainian lands. The role and contribution of A. Busching in a geographical study of Ukraine in the second half of the seventeenth century are considered. In 1762–1763 A. Busching introduced to the world geographical community a new generalizing geographical name of the country, which was known from earlier treatises as Kievan Rus, Red Ruthenia, Cossacks’ province. The title of the relevant section of it preserved colonial official name given in 1764 by Catherine II disbanded it Hetman state – Little Russia. But below its geographical characteristics, this definition was begun: “The country of the Cossacks, usually called Ukraine...” A. Busching filed a brief geographical reference of all provinces and major cities of Ukraine. Busching’s books interesting information about her administrative-territorial structure, number cities, geography of trade, state of the river and road transport, formation centres manufactured crafts etc. A. Busching in 1772–1775 was the first systematized scientific community for world geography major geographic information system on the new administrative-territorial unit Europe – the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria – successor of earlier Principality of Galicia-Volyn Rus and Rus country. A. Busching is the author of the first survey maps of Europe that reflect this geographical unit. Content and factual materials of the scientific heritage of geographer were critically analysed and modified. It is shown the value of certain works of the scientist for historical-geographical studios and territorial development of Ukrainian lands that period. Анотація:
The aim of this study has been to investigate teachers´ teaching of name geography and based on this contribute with discussion that can develop the didactics of geography. The subject of geography has been debated in the discourse of the school for a long time. To examine the aim of the study interviews have been conducted with six teachers from different schools who are competent in the subject of geography. The material from the interviews has been transcribed, analyzed and then a result has been written. The result provides that the teachers use different methods current to the students' learning. The teachers have a common denominator for the purpose of their teaching, namely, to provide a basis for the students for further development in the subject of geography. Our conclusion is that teachers express their didactic choices and dedicate name geography in different ways and there is a need for further research to develop teachers' awareness about their didactic choices of name geography.

This dissertation constructs a political ecology of two modern irrigation communities in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. In assessing the impacts of the 1992 restructuring of Mexico's water policy, the study contributes to debates within geography about global economic integration, the transformation of the state-society relationship, the interface of ecological change with structural and political demands, and the prescription of decentralization, privatization, and free trade strategies for improving water management in developing countries. The dissertation investigates these questions: How have the restructuring of water and agricultural policy impacted local producers in irrigation districts in Sonora? How have small communal producers (e.g., ejidatarios) responded to the water reform package? An underlying assumption is that Sonoran producers in irrigation districts are among the nation's most-advantaged, given their proximity to U.S. markets, access to irrigation, technological package, and experience with commercial production. Mexico's water and agriculture policies are intended to allow the strongest, most efficient producers to become more competitive. I argue, however, that the water and agricultural reform package overall does not benefit Sonoran producers, and particularly disadvantages the ejidatario sector of farmers, due to a cost squeeze driven by rising water and input costs, retrenchment of state support, and loss of subsidies, among other factors. Most ejidatario producers have abandoned production and their water and land assets are being privatized. Despite this overall finding, some ejidatarios have found entrepreneurial ways to adapt their productive responses to the new challenges. The global-local linkages in the districts demonstrate that different free trade agreements can have distinct impacts on producers of different crops and transnational companies can pose challenges to water-strapped local communities. The prolonged drought has contributed to a water shortage that limits profitability of agriculture. The state's promotion of water consumptive, export crops is at odds with the demands of nature that dictate less intensive agriculture in arid regions like Sonora, with implications for the sustainability of commercial agriculture. A concept of water as a social good---rather than a purely economic good---needs to be resuscitated in order to satisfy the rural development needs of Mexico's ejidatario producers.

PhD is about the family farm in the United Kingdom. It investigates the reasons behind their survival since the end of World War Two and the current day. The research is situated in a gap in knowledge within agricultural geography that exists due to an inadequacy to explore effectively the family farm and its continuation. This is related to two strands of research. First, analysts of the era between the mid-1940s and early-mid 1980s argued that the inability of the family farm to access funding through external connections to fund technology would result in their extinction. Second, activities such as farm diversification, which have been suggested by proponents of agricultural phases since the early-mid 1980s such as 'post-productivism', have failed to provide real options for family farmers to survive without food production. This PhD acknowledges the role of the family farm itself, technology and external connections to its persistence. It creates a theoretical framework grounded in an appreciation of the everyday and mundane, which justifies concentration on a single family farm located in Ceredigion, Wales, UK. The study implemented ethnography and multi-sited ethnography by living and working on a family farm and using the complementary methods of participant observation, focused discussions and in-the-field interviewing. The study found that family farmers utilise their own creativity, resources and abilities to engage with technology and external connections in diverse, multiple and unexpected ways. These practices were related to motivations such as maintaining a good way of life, producing food and supporting the local community. In turn, these motivations were connected to a deeply embedded emotional longing to survive and keep the name on the land.

State violence, and policing in particular, continue to shape the black British experience, racialising geographical areas associated with African and African-Caribbean communities. The history of black struggles in the UK has often centred on spaces of racial violence and resistance to it. But black-led social movements of previous decades have, for the most part, seen a decline in both political mobilisations, and the militant anti-racist slogans and discourses that accompanied them. Neoliberalism, through securitisation, resource reallocation, privatisation of space and the de-racialising of language, has made radical black activism an increasingly difficult endeavour. But this does not mean that black struggle against policing has disappeared. What it does mean, however, is that there have been significant changes in how anti-racist activism against policing is articulated and carried out. Three high-profile black deaths at the hands of police in 2011 led to widespread protest and civil unrest. These movements of resistance were strengthened when the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States mobilised hundreds of young people in solidarity actions in England. In this thesis, I argue that, over time, racist metonyms used to describe places racialised as black (Handsworth, Brixton etc.) and people racialised as black (Stephen Lawrence, Mark Duggan etc.), have led to the rise of metonymic anti-racism. While metonymic anti-racism was used alongside more overt anti-racist language in the period between the 1950s and early 1990s, I argue that such overt anti-racist language is becoming rarer in the post-2011 period, particularly in radical black grassroots organisations that address policing. Intersecting with metonymic anti-racism are gender dynamics brought to the surface by female-led campaigns against police violence, and forms of resistance which target spaces of post-industrial consumer capitalism. Understanding how police racism, and resistance to it, are being reconceptualised through language, and reconfigured through different forms of activism, provides a fresh understanding of grassroots black struggle in Britain.

Denna studie har undersökt elevers kunskaper angående namngeografi samt läge- och storleksrelationer kopplat till Sverige, Norden, Europa samt världen. Studiens syfte är att undersöka om elevernas kunskaper påverkas av deras resvana, ursprung, kön eller annan vistelse utomlands. Studien utgår ifrån Bronfenbrenners ekologiska systemteori och Piagets kognitiva konstruktivism. Undersökningen är genomförd med en kvantitativ metod och respondenterna har bestått av 52 elever i tre olika klasser i årskurs 6. Respondenterna har fyllt i en enkät där de har fått besvara frågor angående deras resvana, vart de är födda, hur många plaster de har bott på samt om de har släkt utomlands. Respondenterna har även besvarat tolv frågeställningar kopplat till namngeografi samt läge- och storleksrelationer där respondenterna uppmanades att ringa in rätt svar bland fyra svarsalternativ. Avslutningsvis ombads respondenterna att konstruera en världskarta på ett blankt papper och markera ut världsdelarna samt Sverige. Resultatet av studien visar att de elever som är beresta har presterat bättre än de elever som inte har rest utanför Sverige. Studien visar även att de elever som har släkt utomlands har presterat bättre än de elever som inte har släkt utomlands. I sin helhet har flickorna presterat bättre än pojkarna och de elever som tillhör en annan könstillhörighet. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att eleverna tar till sig namngeografi utanför skolan och att resande och släkt utomlands kan bidra till sådana kunskaper.
The aim of this study is to examine students' knowledge regarding name geography, location and size relationships linked to Sweden, the Nordic countries, Europe and the world. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether students' knowledge is affected by their travel habits, origin, gender or other residence abroad. This study is based on Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory and Piaget's cognitive constructivism. The survey was conducted using a quantitative method and the respondents consisted of 52 students in three different classes in 6th grade. The respondents filled in a questionnaire where they were asked questions about their travel habits, where they were born, how many places they have lived in and if they have relatives abroad. The respondents also answered twelve questions related to name geography, location, and size relationships where the respondents were asked to circle the correct answer among four alternatives. Finally, the respondents were asked to construct a map of the world and mark the continents and Sweden on a blank piece of paper. The results of the study show that the students who have traveled have performed better than the students who have not traveled outside Sweden. The study also shows that students who have relatives abroad have performed better than students who have not relatives abroad. Overall, the girls have performed better than the boys and the students who belong to another gender. The results of the survey show that students absorb name geography outside of school and while traveling. Relatives abroad can also contribute to such knowledge.

The author emphasizes that geonames are not a recent field pf research among German geographers. However, geographical names are very important for the perception and representation of geographic spaces. In Germany some names like 'Odenwald' and 'Eifel' are very old, others as 'Pfälzerwald' or ”Taunus' were created in the 19th century. During the 20th century, physiogeographical divisions had been created in Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Austria. They are organized like hierarchical systems, they are very similar and compatible to one another. A high number of new geonames have been created by geographers and other specialists. Modern landscape divisions are very important contributions towards a worldwide standardization of geonames by order of the UNO. In Germany the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (StAGN) is responsible for all questions concerning geographical names.

Анотація:
With the implementation of “go globally” strategy of Chinese culture, a large number of Chinese films and TV programs have been produced to go abroad. As a medium and carrier of cultural communication, the quality of documentary subtitle translation determines whether Chinese culture can be appropriately disseminated or not. This paper aims to investigate the translation strategies of culture-specific items with special focus on name of dishes. The object of study in this paper is A Bite of China 1 produced by CCTV in 2012, which is not only about Chinese foods but also geography, local customs and dietary habit. Firstly, by using comparative approach, the linguistic characteristics are discussed to identify the similarities and differences between source and translated dish names. Then the translation strategies for dish name are examined. Next, such factors affecting translation strategies as cultural ideology is analyzed. The objective of this paper is to study what translation strategies are possibly adopted when translating Chinese dish name into English in the documentary. The findings show that in the process of dish name translation of Chinese documentaries, domestication and foreignization are two frequently used strategies which is complementary to each other.

Many pipeline industry managers and senior officials intuitively understand that location is important to most aspects related to pipelines throughout the life-cycle — from project concept, through construction and operations and finally to decommissioning. However, many organizations are not taking full advantage of location as being a vital component to support business decision-making across the entire range of activities undertaken by pipeline companies. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a tool that takes advantage of geography. GIS is ideally suited for the storage, display, and output of geographic data, and moreover, the analysis and modeling of geographic data. While GIS has been around as a technology for over 30 years it is only in the last several years that it has started to be extensively used within the pipeline industry. Most managers have heard about GIS. Many organizations have already started to implement GIS and CAD-based solutions through individual projects and with a technical focus of automating work flows or business processes such as generating alignment sheets, regulatory compliance, integrity management, and land management to name a few. Given that many of these applications tend to be stand-alone or isolated developments, pipeline companies need to look at the complete spatial environment of all potential tools and applications, and support this with a vision of a common spatial data warehouse in a holistic sense. Any company that embraces a continuous gathering of spatial data throughout the pipeline life-cyle will have a significant knowledge base whose value will increase over time. A spatial data warehouse of truly integrated environmental, engineering and socioeconomic factors related to a pipeline during the entire lifecycle will have a total value that transcends the value of the individual factors. The Return on Investment (ROI) of a properly developed GIS framework and spatial data warehouse looking at all operational demands and support applications will certainly be many times over the original expenditure as measured in cost savings as well as better decision making. This paper will present insights and approaches into how to properly and effectively leverage the spatial data asset and in deploying GIS throughout the enterprise. These include addressing all of the elements that are key in implementing GIS — hardware, software, data, people and methods — as well as considering some of the ROI and value-based measures for GIS success.

In geopolitics, the concepts of geography and territory are reduced to the fundamental aspects of relations between States, they serve as a basic method of interpreting the past, they act as the main factors of human existence, organizing all other aspects of existence around them. It is in this perspective that the article examines the attitude to Baikal in the history of the mutually linked foreign policy of Russia and China. It is noted that the Mongols and Manchus, who once conquered China, not only found themselves largely assimilated by the defeated society, but over time, a large part of their ancestral territories began to be perceived as native Chinese. Far from being justified, this also applied to Baikal, although the Yakut etymology of its name, associated with the ethnic ancestors of the Yakuts — the Huns, has been clearly traced since ancient times. Since ancient times, Buryats and Evenks who voluntarily became part of Russia have lived around Baikal. Modern development is characterized by the “penetration” of the Chinese into the business of Asian Russia. In the Baikal region, this focus has basically three goals: forest, clean water, and ownership of land and other natural resources. In a special row, it is necessary to put projects for supplying the population of some Chinese territories with Baikal water, which is planned to be transported both in bottled form and in the future through pipes.

It also considers the adoption of the theories and methods of the Conzenian School. Urban morphological research in China is carried out in different disciplines: mainly archaeology, geography, and architecture. The earliest significant work was within archaeology, but that has been widely ignored by current urban morphological researchers. As an urban archaeologist whose first degree was in architecture, Zhengzhi Zhao worked on the Studies on the reconstruction of the city plan of Ta-Tu in the Yuan Dynasty in 1957. He uncovered the original city plan of Ta-Tu (now Beijing) in the Yuan Dynasty by applying street pattern analysis. Before the Cultural Revolution, Pingfang Xu recorded and collated the research findings of Zhao, who was by then seriously ill, so that the methods he developed could be continued with the help of other scholars especially archaeologists. His methods of study are still used in studies of urban form in China today. Later, the dissemination of the Conzenian School of thought, aided by two ISUF conferences in China, promoted the development of studies of Chinese urban form. With the help of Jeremy Whitehand, researchers, including the Urban Morphology Research Group of Peking University, applied the theories and methods of the Conzenian School through field work and empirical studies. Taking the opportunity of the 110th anniversaries of the birth of both M.R.G. Conzen and Zhengzhi Zhao, this paper summarizes multidisciplinary urban morphological research in China.

A fundamental responsibility of the National Park Service is to ensure that park resources are preserved, protected, and managed in consideration of the resources themselves and for the benefit and enjoyment by the public. Through the inventory, monitoring, and study of park resources, we gain a greater understanding of the scope, significance, distribution, and management issues associated with these resources and their use. This baseline of natural resource information is available to inform park managers, scientists, stakeholders, and the public about the conditions of these resources and the factors or activities which may threaten or influence their stability. There are several different categories of geologic or stratigraphic units (supergroup, group, formation, member, bed) which represent a hierarchical system of classification. The mapping of stratigraphic units involves the evaluation of lithologies, bedding properties, thickness, geographic distribution, and other factors. If a new mappable geologic unit is identified, it may be described and named through a rigorously defined process that is standardized and codified by the professional geologic community (North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature 2005). In most instances when a new geologic unit such as a formation is described and named in the scientific literature, a specific and well-exposed section of the unit is designated as the type section or type locality (see Definitions). The type section is an important reference section for a named geologic unit which presents a relatively complete and representative profile for this unit. The type or reference section is important both historically and scientifically, and should be recorded such that other researchers may evaluate it in the future. Therefore, this inventory of geologic type sections in NPS areas is an important effort in documenting these locations in order that NPS staff recognize and protect these areas for future studies. The documentation of all geologic type sections throughout the 423 units of the NPS is an ambitious undertaking. The strategy for this project is to select a subset of parks to begin research for the occurrence of geologic type sections within particular parks. The focus adopted for completing the baseline inventories throughout the NPS was centered on the 32 inventory and monitoring networks (I&M) established during the late 1990s. The I&M networks are clusters of parks within a defined geographic area based on the ecoregions of North America (Fenneman 1946; Bailey 1976; Omernik 1987). These networks share similar physical resources (geology, hydrology, climate), biological resources (flora, fauna), and ecological characteristics. Specialists familiar with the resources and ecological parameters of the network, and associated parks, work with park staff to support network level activities (inventory, monitoring, research, data management). Adopting a network-based approach to inventories worked well when the NPS undertook paleontological resource inventories for the 32 I&M networks. The network approach is also being applied to the inventory for the geologic type sections in the NPS. The planning team from the NPS Geologic Resources Division who proposed and designed this inventory selected the Greater Yellowstone Inventory and Monitoring Network (GRYN) as the pilot network for initiating this project. Through the research undertaken to identify the geologic type sections within the parks of the GRYN, methodologies for data mining and reporting on these resources was established. Methodologies and reporting adopted for the GRYN have been used in the development of this type section inventory for the Chihuahuan Desert Inventory & Monitoring Network.
