In addition to identifying and developing superior classroom teaching, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification process is intended to identify and cultivate teachers who are more engaged in their schools. Here the authors ask, “Does NBPTS certification affect the number of colleagues a teacher helps with instructional matters?” If so, this could enhance the influence of NBPTS-certified teachers and their contributions to their professional communities. Using sociometric data within 47 elementary schools from two states, the authors find that NBPTS-certified teachers were nominated more as providing help with instruction than non-NBPTS-certified teachers. From analyses using propensity score weighting, the authors then infer that NBPTS certification affects the number of colleagues a teacher helps with instructional matters. The authors then quantify the robustness of their inference in terms of internal and external validity, finding, for example, that any omitted confounding variable would have to have an impact six times larger than that of their strongest covariate to invalidate their inference. Therefore, the potential value added by NBPTS-certified teachers as help providers has policy and practice implications in an era when teacher leadership has risen to the fore as a critical force for school improvement.

Phytoene desaturase (PDS) is a rate-limiting enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of carotenoids, which converts phytoene to zeta-carotene in a two-step desaturation reaction. Transiently blocked carotenogenesis by silencing the PDS gene in Nicotiana benthamiana (NbPDS) using the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) technique was used. Silencing of NbPDS induced dwarfism and an albino-type leaf trait in N. benthamiana. The NbPDS-silenced leaves accumulated free amino acids in amounts 9.5-folds greater than those of the GFP-silenced control leaves, but contained only 59.6% of total soluble proteins. When treatment with 10 and 100 μM paraquat was carried out to induce oxidative stress, NbPDS-silenced N. benthamiana demonstrated more resistance at both concentrations compared to the control plants. These data strongly suggest that high concentrations of free amino acids occur because they are inadequately incorporated into proteins of the NbPDS-silenced plants, but reduce injury inflicted by oxidative stress even without the assistance of important antioxidants like carotenoids.

Certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) offers experienced teachers opportunities through a written portfolio to “match” their practice to the Board's standards. In creating standards and requiring teachers to argue in writing that they have realized the standards in their teaching, the NBPTS may offer a national discourse about teaching, and as such may form a “discourse community.” However, since teachers’ working knowledge is local, contextualized, personal, and oral, teachers may find difficulties in entering such a discourse. Using interviews and qualitative analysis, this study of four teachers applying for NBPTS certification found that teachers have difficulty representing their knowledge about practice in writing. Those candidates who were most successful were able to assume the NBPTS discourse values, which may be at odds with teachers’ “working knowledge.”

Bone metastases are common in patients with many types of cancer, especially breast and prostate cancer — in which the incidence is approximately 70% among patients with advanced metastatic disease. Aminobisphosphonates (NBPs) have entered clinical practice in the treatment of bone metastases from several neoplasms, including breast and prostate adenocarcinoma, as a result of their anti-resorption properties. However, evidence has accumulated on the direct anti-tumour effects of NBPs. This review describes the metabolic pathways that are putative molecular targets of NBPs and that are involved in the prenylation processes of several intracellular small GTP-binding proteins (ras family related proteins). The latter regulate the intracellular survival and proliferative pathways of tumour cells and could be the intracellular molecular targets of the NBPs responsible for the direct anti-cancer effects, even if definitive conclusions cannot be drawn at present. Different mechanisms have been reported to account for the anti-neoplastic action of NBPs, including: the induction of apoptosis; cell cycle perturbations; and anti-invasive, anti-migration and anti-angiogenic effects. Moreover, this review describes the most important clinical studies that demonstrate the activity of NBPs in preventing skeletal-related events induced by bone metastases. The main pharmacokinetic pitfalls of NBPs are described, and methods of overcoming these pitfalls through the use of liposome vehicles are proposed. Finally, the principal pre-clinical studies on the interaction between NBPs and other biological agents are also described; these studies may enable reductions in the in vivo NBP concentrations required to achieve anti-tumour activity. To date, however, the real molecular targets of NBPs are not completely known and new technological platforms are required in order to detect them and to develop new anti-cancer strategies based on the use of NBPs.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are classified into two groups, according to their side chain structures, as nitrogen-containing BPs (NBPs) and non-nitrogen-containing BPs (non-NBPs). In this study, we examined the effects of NBPs and non-NBPs on inflammatory responses, by quantifying the inflammatory mediators, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO), in cultured neonatal mouse calvaria. All examined NBPs (pamidronate, alendronate, incadronate, risedronate, zoledronate) stimulated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced PGE2 and NO production by upregulating COX-2 and iNOS mRNA expression, whereas non-NBPs (etidronate, clodronate, tiludronate) suppressed PGE2 and NO production, by downregulating gene expression. Additionally, [4-(methylthio) phenylthio] methane bisphosphonate (MPMBP), a novel non-NBP with an antioxidant methylthio phenylthio group in its side chain, exhibited the most potent anti-inflammatory activity among non-NBPs. Furthermore, results of immunohistochemistry showed that the nuclear translocation of NF-κB/p65 and tyrosine nitration of cytoplasmic protein were stimulated by zoledronate, while MPMBP inhibited these phenomena, by acting as a superoxide anion (O2−) scavenger. These findings indicate that MPMBP can act as an efficacious agent that causes fewer adverse effects in patients with inflammatory bone diseases, including periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Investment in the certification of teachers by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) represents a significant policy initiative for the nation's public school teachers. This article investigates the potential impact of NBPTS certification on teachers' career paths. Using a competing risks model on data from North Carolina public schools, we find evidence that those teachers who apply to NBPTS are more likely to be mobile than are nonapplicants, particularly after they have gone through the certification process. Regression discontinuity estimates suggest that National Board–certified teachers are more likely than unsuccessful applicants to leave the North Carolina public school system and that this appears to result from certified teachers exiting high-minority schools, particularly Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.

Abstract Motivation The interaction between proteins and nucleic acids plays a crucial role in gene regulation and cell function. Determining the binding preferences of nucleic acid-binding proteins (NBPs), namely RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and transcription factors (TFs), is the key to decipher the protein–nucleic acids interaction code. Today, available NBP binding data from in vivo or in vitro experiments are still limited, which leaves a large portion of NBPs uncovered. Unfortunately, existing computational methods that model the NBP binding preferences are mostly protein specific: they need the experimental data for a specific protein in interest, and thus only focus on experimentally characterized NBPs. The binding preferences of experimentally unexplored NBPs remain largely unknown. Results Here, we introduce ProbeRating, a nucleic acid recommender system that utilizes techniques from deep learning and word embeddings of natural language processing. ProbeRating is developed to predict binding profiles for unexplored or poorly studied NBPs by exploiting their homologs NBPs which currently have available binding data. Requiring only sequence information as input, ProbeRating adapts FastText from Facebook AI Research to extract biological features. It then builds a neural network-based recommender system. We evaluate the performance of ProbeRating on two different tasks: one for RBP and one for TF. As a result, ProbeRating outperforms previous methods on both tasks. The results show that ProbeRating can be a useful tool to study the binding mechanism for the many NBPs that lack direct experimental evidence. and implementation Availability and implementation The source code is freely available at <https://github.com/syang11/ProbeRating>. The use of plastic polymers in food packaging causes serious environmental and health problems and as a result, natural biopolymers are being developed (NBPs). Although NBPs have several shortcomings as a packaging material, these can be overcome with the help of nanotechnology. In this context, this review will report on the main findings about the effect of the integration of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) on the characteristics of NBPs. A systematic review was carried out using PRISMA methodology to select relevant studies from the last 5 years. According to the analysis performed, MNPs provide NBPs with a broad spectrum against bacteria, fungi and even viruses of interest. MNPs have also been shown to improve the physical, mechanical, optical, antioxidant and barrier characteristics of NBPs. MNPs are used at low concentrations (generally 0.5 to 5%) and this avoids their potential toxicity. MNPs are shown to be efficient materials to obtain bionanocomposites suitable for active food packaging. Studies focusing on the control of the antimicrobial effect of MNPs on desirable microorganisms are suggested. In addition, further studies on the evaluation of the potential toxicity of MNPs are needed to ensure food quality and safety.

There has been much excitement over the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards; especially with regard to improving student achievement. Are Nationally Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) performing better than their non board certified counterparts? Does achieving National Board Certification mean that a teacher is "highly qualified?" What are the tangible effects on the achievement levels of students of Nationally Board Certified teachers? Much research has been conducted in the past few years to try to answer these questions. Currently, the results of much of this research are ambiguous at best. Most studies report little in the way of significant impact on student achievement by NBCTs. However, many studies show teachers self-reporting a strong positive impact on their own teaching and their feelings of efficacy. The state of Florida and the federal government have spent hundreds of millions of dollars over the past decade in pursuit of expanding the NBPTS as a means of ensuring highly qualified teachers for every student. This study aims to discover whether or not there is any definitive association between teachers who attain the national certification and higher student achievement on standardized tests specifically the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in a local central Florida school district. The researcher attempted to determine if students assigned to classrooms of nationally board certified teachers outperformed students of comparable backgrounds that were assigned to classrooms of teachers that were not nationally certified. To accomplish this, the researcher looked at reading and math test scores of third grade students in nationally board certified teachers' classrooms and compared them with those of students assigned to non-nationally board certified teachers to determine if the gains made by one group were statistically significantly different from the other. Recommendations were made for further exploration of the link between NBCTs and student achievement.

Teacher attrition and retention has become a major issue facing education policymakers and practioners as our nation's school age population continues to grow, but the teaching workforce does not. This study seeks to examine the impact of certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) on burnout levels in educators. The potential benefits to teachers who pursue NBPTS certification include a sense of professional pride, new leadership roles and responsibilities for teachers, recognition of outstanding teaching practice, and higher salaries (Shapiro, 1995). Some of these potential rewards seem to address a number of the factors that are related to the onset burnout, and therefore may reduce teacher attrition. The study utilized the Maslach-Leiter conceptual framework to examine burnout, which breaks the burnout construct into three separate dimensions; emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. The research questions sought to determine if there was a difference between National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and their non-certified peers in each of these dimensions of burnout. The research sample consisted of the NBCTs and a comparable random sample of their non-certified peers from a large urban school district in the Central Florida area. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Educators Survey was used a basis of comparison of the burnout levels. The two groups were compared utilizing an independent samples t-test. The instrument utilized in this study also included demographic questions, as well as questions that were designed to measure the various elements of the Maslach-Leiter theoretical model of burnout. These questions and the independent variable NBPTS certification were included in a multiple regression analysis in order to determine if the differences noted between the groups using the independent samples t-tests were in fact a result of NBPTS certification, and not the theoretical model itself. The instruments were mailed in the fall of 2006, and were returned to the researcher anonymously. A total of 476 surveys were returned, for a response rate of 52%. The independent samples t-tests revealed significant differences between NBCTs and their non-certified peers on all three dimensions of burnout. An examination of the individual scores for each group revealed that in each of the dimensions showed that the NBCTs demonstrated lower levels of experienced burnout in each dimension. The multiple regression analyses that were conducted to confirm that NBPTS certification was in fact a significant factor in the development of each burnout dimension revealed mixed results. Emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment were both found to have a significant negative relationship with NBPTS certification, which indicates that the NBCTs are significantly less burned out then their non-certified peers. Despite the initial finding of significance in the independent samples t-test, NBPTS certification was not found to be a significant factor in the onset of the depersonalization dimension of burnout. This relationship needs further exploration in future studies. The significant difference between the research and control groups in this study suggests that NBPTS certification may reduce burnout levels in at least two dimensions. Legislators and policymakers at the state and federal levels have provided millions of dollars to support NBPTS certification. These findings seem to indicate that this financial support has impacted burnout levels in educators, and may therefore warrant examination as a strategy to address the issue of teacher attrition.

Professional development is used by teachers to improve their teaching to enhance student learning, and research indicates that the National Board Certification (NBC) process contains high-quality professional development characteristics. Engagement in the NBC process can lead to professional growth by changing teachers’ knowledge, instructional practices, and students’ learning. This quantitative study investigated the extent to which characteristics of the NBC process influenced National Board Certified Teachers’ (NBCTs) professional growth. Using an online survey, the study collected responses from 119 NBCTs who participated in a specific NBC support program. Key findings included that all 20 high-quality professional development characteristics investigated had a perceived positive influence on professional growth, with some notable differences. The characteristics involving individual analysis of student work and teaching videos along with reflection were perceived to be most important, while those centering on collaboration with other candidates were perceived as less important. Second, characteristics that had the greatest perceived impact were those that focused on changing pedagogy rather than increasing content knowledge. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between the perceived importance of duration in the experience and the length of time the candidate was in the process: NBCTs who achieved in one year, as compared to NBCTs who achieved in two or three years, had statistically significant lower ratings on the influence that the duration had on their professional growth. Additionally, those who engaged in the process for financial reasons, as compared to professional growth, had a lower rating of perceived importance when all characteristics were combined.

To combat the challenges of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the Chinese government launched a program in 2009 called the National Basic Public Health Service (NBPHS). This provides disease management services in primary healthcare facilities for hypertensive patients. Although a large amount of money has been invested since 2009, little is known about the benefits of such a large investment. Based on national datasets, this study conducted an economic evaluation of hypertension management in the NBPHS from 2009 to 2015. A trend model was built based on data from 1991 to 2009, which was used to predict hypertension control rates for 2015. The direct impact of the NBPHS on hypertensives was generated by comparing the predicted hypertension control with that of the observed levels in 2015. This generated a figure of 9,532,719 hypertensives who were able to get their blood pressure (BP) under control incrementally during 2009-2015. A hypothesized scenario in which the NBPHS had not been implemented was created to compare with the NBPHS scenario. Following the pathway of risk prediction studies on CVDs, a Markov model was developed to estimate the long-term health outcomes of the NBPHS by comparing the two scenarios from 2016 to 2045. It was estimated that at the end of the 30-year projection period, there would be 25,012, 296,258, and 744,493 hypertensive patients who would have avoided coronary heart disease, stroke and death, respectively, by being part of the NBPHS. A standard model of economic evaluation was developed by estimating gross domestic product increases from labour force participation and productivity gained by averting morbidities and mortalities. Net present value (NPV) was used to estimate healthcare expenditure saved, and the economic and social benefit of morbidity and mortality averted. It was predicted that from 2016 to 2045, there would be an economic benefit of 169,857 million CNY in NPV, or 267,297 million CNY when including social benefit. Given that hypertension management accounts for 14.59% of the NBPHS funding: the benefit-cost ratio would be 6.0 at a discount rate of 3%, and if the social benefit is included, the benefit-cost ratio would be 15.4 at the same discount rate. The internal rate of return would be 14.6% if only the economic benefit is considered and 20.7% if the social benefit is included. This is a very high benefit investment compared to that identified in other studies. This study contributes to academic knowledge by providing an economic framework of health interventions in primary healthcare settings in China. To some extent, it also fills a gap by addressing the economic evaluation of chronic disease interventions in China.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing stimulation of unconventional wells employing large volumes of sand in low viscosity fluids provides propped fracture conductivity in less than 25% of the created fracture area, primarily because of poor sand transport mechanics. The remaining unpropped area is at best only marginally productive using the conventional sand/slickwater hydraulic fracturing process alone. Near-neutrally buoyant proppants (NBPs, ASG 1.055) have proven to be highly effective in accessing production from fracture area that is otherwise left unpropped. Fracture models illustrate the propped fracture area of designs incorporating NBPs is improved to over 85% of the created fracture area. Production simulations of typical slickwater and sand frac designs supplemented with NBPs at 3% by weight of sand distributed evenly throughout the slurry stages show cumulative production increases of 20% to greater than 50% compared to the large volume slickwater/sand treatments without NBPs. Efforts have been directed to justification of the incremental expense involved with the NBP applications and assessment of the associated value-added economic metrics, including the value of the realized incremental production vs. time, the payback time for recovery of the incremental costs, and Return on Investment (ROI). For example, in a 2018 trial of NBP wells in the Middle Bakken formation of North Dakota, the production uplift observed for NBP wells achieved payback of the incremental costs in an average of 26 days; the 1-year cumulative oil production of the NBP wells averaged 69,632 barrels greater than control wells, resulting in a 25% uplift compared to the offset control wells. The Year 1 Return on Investment (ROI) for the drilling and completion costs of the first Middle Bakken well with NBP was 97% versus 64% for the sand-only control wells. Controlled multi-stage horizontal completions of wells with sand-only have been evaluated against wells utilizing NBPs in the application have been executed within several unconventional plays, including the Permian and Williston basins. The performance of the NBP wells have consistently validated the production uplift predictions of the production simulation models. The case studies analyzed herein expand the economic assessment of the NBP stimulation designs by including production analyses quantitative comparison of Net Present Value, production decline rates, and projected EURs of the NBP wells and non-NBP offset wells.
