The struggle to end violence against women and girls has long been a priority topic for women’s and feminist movements in Latin America. Lately, since the changes in the new media landscape (Castells 2015; Lievrouw, 2013) with the increased use of information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the way women and feminist movements advocate their intentions are changing (Harcourt, 2013; Mathos, 2017). Departing from this reality, the aim is to investigate the role the use of social media activism played for the recent feminist movement, Ni Una Menos (NUM [Not One Less]), in Argentina and Chile while advocating for the end of violence against women. Taking a cross disciplinary approach this research combines theories from the fields of feminist studies, social movement and communication sciences. Through in-depth interviews with core activists from NUM both in Argentina and Chile as research method, it has been possible to identify the role of certain social media platforms for NUM’s tactical repertoire in their strive to advocate for the end of violence against women and girls. The findings also demonstrate the activism on social media platforms by the NUM movement has played an important role to set the topic on the public agenda in these countries, resulting in a generally greater awareness. Regardless off the role social media activism played, the importance seems to lie in a combination of activism on social media and the streets for feminist movements advocating to end violence against women because it assures a broad reach to all people in society. Nevertheless, to end violence against women in these countries much more effort is needed by society at large.

This dissertation brings an interdisciplinary methodology to bear on the rhetorical analysis of women's sport and health social movements in the twenty-first century. Specifically, I read "sports feminism" as a rhetorical discourse that engages ongoing feminist struggles for women's rights to both their bodies and public space. Drawing on transnational feminist rhetorics, I network sports feminist arguments to international policy documents, like the Brighton and Beijing Declarations, to illustrate how the topoi of sport, health, and fitness function as commonplaces in global gender mainstreaming policy. In applying the metaphor of the network to the communicative infrastructure of global sports feminist advocacy, I also draw on new media rhetorics to analyze the role of the wireless Internet and social networking in the rhetorical practice of networking sports feminist policy and arguments across transnational lines of difference. Yet, in reading the rhetorical practices of the Women's International Sports Movement and Nike's Girl Effect through transnational feminist rhetoric, I illustrate how sports feminism is neither a homogenous discourse nor singular feminist identity, and thus, must be analyzed as a pluralistic political praxis with competing rhetorical objectives and audiences. Thus, the final chapter situates sports feminist rhetoric locally in the context of US-based girl power media culture, analyzing the impact of sports feminist rhetoric on the embodied perceptions of gender and gender relations of adolescent American girls. The project thus demonstrates the importance of understanding sports feminist rhetoric's global sociopolitical and economic roles and its impact on gendered identity and labor in the twenty-first century.

This dissertation is an ethnographic methodological study on feminine and feminist communities of Facebook based on recent studies for data collection and analysis at the virtual context. From the phenomenon of the explosion of technology in social media, I mapped a female category in the social network, that I have termed as "Ciberfeminine . Such terminology, this is a representation of the patriarchal and media features in the femininity digital culture. This analyse used like resource, those online personal profiles (among girls, women and ladies) used to circumvent the ciberfeminino was done, from the practice of hidden observation of personal pages and monitoring of selected communities. The reflex of female at the social network is analysed in this dissertation, from the portraits and self-portraits are "posted", which reproduce a virtual actresses acting in Ciberfeminine at the social network, as Cyborgs Coquettish . Like this, I showed the similarities of the profile characteristics of female culture presented, immersed in Simmelian reference, where the explicit sensuality in the poses, in the looks and in the smiles, surround a segment of female culture called "coquetry." They use the instrumentalized technology to reproduce and disseminate the female image based on sexualized "beauty", working in this way, the social / virtual self-marketing. On the other hand, in the same sphere of social / virtual relationships, the traditional condition persists massacring the woman's sexuality release. As a counterpoint, I presented the recent developments of causes, on which feminists communities in Facebook have raised and have challenged. In this context, the work approaches the female class split into social niches, propagators of coercive values, scaling for online life the ideal of Foulcault panopticon. Thus, I demonstrated that social pressures for visibility may stigmatize or disciplinary female categories, from aesthetic values of image and/or from traditional moral to feminine principles, reflecting the maximum of quantitative signs in Brazilian feminine exposed on Facebook

The purpose of this research is to identify the changes in the process of communication in the contemporary society observing the feminist movement in Brazil on the digital social media. As elements of analysis, data were collected from the Facebook page ?N?o Me Kahlo? about five events related to the feminist movement that had national impact. The data were used to reflect how these changes are transforming the contemporaneity. The methodology used in this study was Content Analysis, and, as support, Social Network Analys, because those tools helps to understand the current configuration of feminism on the Internet, as well as makes it possible to observe the structure of a communication process that is more collaborative. As theoretical scope, this research is mainly based on the concept of Ecosophy by the French sociologist Michel Maffesoli, who argues about the saturation? of society due the excess of searching for perfection. His theoretical proposal is to comprehend the natural social relations of the world on a network system instead of the coercion of emitter to receiver. The sociologist Bruno Latour explains in his Actor- Network Theory (ANT) the group formatting, understanding the hybrid groups between humans and object. Massimo Di Felice, another sociologist that is involved in this theoretical universe, argues about how the communication takes place in the midst of this other configuration of society.

For this, two pages were analyzed: Blogueiras Feministas, which brings together posts of feminist women from all over the country perspective; and Blogueiras Negras, a page with posts of black women, also from different parts of Brazil. It is proposed an analytical exercise on the network that is formed from these manifestations of feminist women on Internet, watching: what were guided by issues in the time of this research, what was the impact of them on blogs, frequency of posts, who are the authors involved in the posts and if there are points of contact between the two blogs studied. As a methodological protocol, this research uses conceptions of gender proposed by Lagarde studies (2005) and Fraser (2002), the internet search methods came from Fragoso, Recuero and Amaral (2011) and communication of feminists is analyzed by mediation and organization of social networks on internet based on Castells (2013) and Levy (1999). The study searched results directly related to the political and social participation of each actor and their connections in the online world and with the potential of social networks on Internet to refresh feminist contemporary struggle in Brazil.

Riot Grrrl, Girls Rock camps and Ladyfest as social movements act as intermediaries in cultural production spaces, where music focused artefacts are made, collaborations forged, distribution networks established and reception practices enacted to create new conventions which can be understood as feminist art worlds. The growing literature on gender and cultural production, particularly in music communities such as Riot Grrrl, frequently speak of networks in qualitative narrative terms and very little is known about Ladyfest as a feminist movement and as a distribution network. This thesis offers an original contribution to cultural sociology by: employing a novel participatory action research approach to gathering social network data on translocal feminist music based cultural organisations; exploring how these networks can challenge a gendered political economy of cultural production in music worlds; understanding who participates and why; investigating how network structures impact the personal relationships, participation and collaboration opportunities for those involved. Engaging with Howard Becker’s Art Worlds theory as a framework, this thesis explores how music and art by women is produced, distributed and received by translocal networks. It takes into account contemporary issues for feminist music-based communities as well as the historical and international context of these overlapping and developing social movements. The literature suggests that one of the most pressing tasks for a sociology of the arts is to understand how organisational structures negotiate the domains of production, distribution and reception, with distribution modes being the most the most under-researched of the three. By focusing on UK Ladyfest festivals as case study sites, this research serves to address these gaps. Primary data sources include on-line social media, surveys, documents, focus groups and multi-mediainterviews. Findings indicate that those involved with Ladyfest tend to be motivated by a desire to challenge gender inequalities at a local level whilst drawing on local and international movements spanning different time periods and drawing on the works of feminist musicians. Homophily and heterophily both have important roles to play in the longitudinal development of Ladyfest networks. Participants show an awareness of intersecting inequalities such as ethnicity, class and disability with sexuality playing an important underlying role for the development of relationships within the networks. For some, Ladyfest involvement is a gateway into feminist activism and wider social and cultural participation, and for many it leads to lasting friendships and new collaborative artbased ties.

ABSTRACT In recent years there has been an increase in online activism. More and more people have been using those virtual spaces to learn, propagate and discuss plenty of themes concerning politics, injustice, prejudice and oppression. Social networks have also been used as learning environments for social movements, feminism being one of the most prominent nowadays in cyberspace. Feminists online have been using numerous visibility strategies, and personal narrative is one of them. Such visibility enables the increasing number of self-identified feminist women who share their feminist narratives online every day. Up to the end of the research period, Tumblr was one of the most popular social networks platforms, specially among young people. The website has a massive amount of feminist narratives and that‘s the reason why it was chosen as the empirical field of analysis. Considering this, the problem was: how has feminism been spread on Tumblr and which pedagogies does it create? The research aims at understanding how feminism is spread online and which pedagogies it creates by analyzing the narratives of self-identified feminist blogs on Tumblr. The methodology used was qualitative, descriptive and analytical and the thesis followed the multipaper format. Among other aspects, the research revealed that social networks have been spaces of critic feminist pedagogy practice, in which its members consume mass cultural industry products while criticizing, denouncing and fighting for better representation for minorities.

This thesis examines feminist and queer actors emerging in highly mediated environments and the forms of political organisation and critical knowledge production they engage in. It indicates that older debates around gender and sexuality are being reformulated in digital networks and identifies alternative understandings which are being developed. The study foregrounds a performative conceptualisation and argues that political realities are produced in dynamic configurations of communication media, discourses and bodies. It suggests that network technologies constitute sources of vulnerability and anxiety for feminists and stresses the significance of registering how embodied subjectivities emerge from these experiences. To achieve its aims and to map activity happening across different spaces and scales, the project attended to context-specific processes of mediation at the intersections of online and offline settings. It employed ethnographic methods, internet visualisation, in-depth interviewing and textual analysis to produce the following key outcomes: it registered changing understandings of the political in relation to new media amongst a network of women's organisations in London; it investigated the centrality of social media and global connections in the shaping of local queer political communities in Brighton; it complicated ideas of control, labour and affect to analyse emerging sexual identities in online spaces like nofauxx.com, and offline postporn events; finally, it traced feminist actors gathering around new reproductive technologies, at the crossing fields of grassroots activism and the academy. Today, women's groups and queer activists increasingly use networked communication for mobilisation and information-sharing. In a climate of widespread scepticism towards both representational politics and traditional media, questions about the role of digital networks in enabling or limiting political engagement are being raised. This thesis aims to contribute to these debates by accounting for the ways in which feminist and queer activists in digital networks reformulate the relationship between communication media and politics.

In 2011, advisors to the British government recommended against introducing a quota for women to corporate boards in the UK. The advisors instead set an aim for the UK’s 100 largest companies. They recommended company leaders take action to increase female representation on boards from just over 12 per cent in 2011, to a minimum of 25 per cent by 2015. The threat of government intervention remains. The EU Council is currently discussing the European Commission’s proposal for a minimum of 40 per cent of each sex amongst non-executive directors by 2020 across all EU member states. Using material from ten weeks of fieldwork in the City of London, I examine how a loose network of business leaders, lobbyists, journalists and researchers are shaping ideas about gender and business. This network intends to show that a quota is not needed to increase the numbers of women in business leadership. I relate my discussion to ideas of markets and marketing, and to ideas of gender differences and gender equality. I first analyse the ideas set out in the business case for gender diversity and in the term gender balance. I then explore how London’s business leaders enhance personal, employer and corporate brands by publicly demonstrating their commitment to gender balance. Through this commitment, leaders also prove themselves members of the collaboration that unites against a quota. I focus particularly on how senior businesswomen are expected to be role models for other women. I show how role models urge other women to ensure they remain recognisably feminine.

International Film Festivals act as important sites for the exhibition of contemporary world cinema. Film festivals represent an increasingly transnational film culture, where audiences, filmmakers, distributors, press, critics and academics come together from all over the world to discover new films, network with one another and debate about the past, present and future of cinema. This research project investigates the role that international film festivals play within the wider international film industry, with a specific focus on emerging women filmmakers. It therefore explores the arena of contemporary women.s cinema at its intersection with the international film festival industry. The significance and original contribution of the research is its intervention in the growing field of film festival studies through a specific investigation of how international film festivals support emerging women filmmakers. The positioning of the research at the intersection of feminist film theory and festival research within the broader context of transnational cinema allows the examination of each festival, the attending filmmakers and their films to be addressed within a more refined and nuanced lens. A core method for the thesis is the close textual analysis of particular emerging women filmmakers. films which are screened at the respective festivals. The research also utilises the qualitative research strategies of the case study and the interview to ¡°seek to understand the context or setting of the participants through visiting this context and gathering information personally¡± (Creswell 2003, 9). The textual analysis is used in dialogue with the interviews and the participant observational data gathering to provide a related context for understanding these films and their cultural meanings, both personally for the filmmaker and transnationally across the festival circuit. The focus of the case studies is the Brisbane International Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Toronto International Film Festival. These three festivals were chosen for their distinct geographical locations in the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, as well as for their varying size and influence on the international film festival circuit. Specifically, I investigate the reasons behind why the organisers of a particular festival have chosen a certain woman.s film, how it is then packaged or displayed within the programme, and how all of this impacts on the filmmaker herself. The focus of my research is to investigate film festivals and their .real-life. applications and benefits for the filmmakers being supported, both through the exhibition of their films and through their attendance as festival guests. The research finds that the current generation of emerging women filmmakers has varying levels of experience and success at negotiating the international film festival circuit. Each of the three festivals examined include and promote the films of emerging women filmmakers through a range of strategies, such as specific programming strands dedicated to showcasing emerging talent, financial support through festival funds, providing visibility within the programme, exposure to international audiences and networking opportunities with industry professionals and other filmmakers. Furthermore, the films produced by the emerging women filmmakers revealed a strong focus on women.s perspectives and experiences, which were explored through the interweaving of particular aesthetic and cinematographic conventions.

This thesis deals with the social relations within two feminist-inspired housing co-operatives in Montreal by employing the analytical tool of social network from an interactionist perspective. The housing co-op milieu is a highly suitable terrain for reflections on feminist urban theory. 'Public' and 'private' space, identity and place, and 'community' and community development are central themes addressed in this study.
Members of each co-op were interviewed using a semi-directed interview guide. Social interaction is analysed qualitatively and focuses on the content of exchanges between co-op residents and patterns of socialising. The study concludes with an analysis of spatial micropolitics in terms of conflict and co-operation.

The present dissertation follows a trajectory which discusses both the difficulty in seeing works of art made by women, as well understanding that female gaze allows another way of seeing the world. Women artists looked for alternatives to display their works, being these, photos, collages, paintings, illustrations and videos. Approaching the alternative media such as the culture of mail art, the zines and nowadays social networks, this study show us a parallel circulation of art outside the museums, in which increasingly younger artists propose to share their gaze with the public. The technologies available over the internet today are largely used by artists to gain visibility, and we can understand them as tools that contribute to this new way of exhibiting and experimenting of spaces. We put particular moments together, without historiographical concern, that composed a feminist narrative whose approaches inspired new artists from the years of 2010, and culminated in an attempt of curation with themes that deal with experiences, intimacies and othering ourselves.

This thesis explores how the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon event impacts the people who coordinate and participate in it. I review museum catalogs to determine institutional representation of women artists, and then examine the Edit-a-thon as a vernacular event on two levels: national and local. The founders have a shared vision of combating perceived barriers to participation in editing Wikipedia, but their larger goal is to address the biases in Wikipedia’s content. My interviews with organizers of the local Eugene, Oregon, edit-a-thon revealed that the network connections possible via the Internet platform of the event did not supersede the importance of face-to-face interaction and vernacular expression during the editing process. The results of my fieldwork found a clear ideological connection to the national event through the more localized satellite edit-a-thons. Both events pursue the consciousness-raising goal of information activism and the construction of a community that advocates for women’s visibility online.

This thesis explores how women's organizations are using communication technologies and strategies for global social change. In 2002, the combination of current feminist theory that highlights issues of cultural specificity and digital communications technology is enabling new possibilities for women's organizations to engage in global feminist practices. Based on feminist theory, communications theory and feminist media literature, this thesis formulates an evaluative framework for assessing the communicative potential of V-Day, a virtual women's organization. The analysis moves beyond this case study to inform the potential global feminist practices of other women's organizations.

For the casual observer, the term "Iranian feminist" is often considered to be an oxymoron. However, what seems to be an ironic juxtaposition actually holds a great length of truth: for over a century now, Iranian women have been marching, screaming, and fighting for equal gender rights--all the while embracing feminist ideals. In fact, "feminity" is a political symbol that has been influencing Iranian politics for over 150 years. From the very beginning of modern Iranian history, women have always played a pivotal role within Iranian history, constantly connecting the personal to the political. This research aims to explore this phenomenon as an independent movement and as one comparable to American feminism. Three main topics are explored: theocratic restrictions, culture, and globalization. There are three methods of research that I have utilized as resources for this study: previous studies, statistical data, and interviews. The purpose of this study is to understand why and how feminism is increasing within the anti-feminist regime of the IRI. This study holds both theoretical and political significance and is designed to predict the future status of Iranian feminism through examining the conditions of the past and present.

While women are often excluded and/or portrayed as victims in the historical scholarship on war, this research builds on recent scholarship that shows women as active agents in warfare. I focus on Yugoslavia’s WWII Partizankas, female soldiers and activists, who held visible positions in the war effort, public consciousness and, later memory. Using gender as a category of analysis, my thesis explores Partizankas’ legacy and their contributions in the National Liberation Movement (NLM) in WWII (1941- 1945) and post-war nation building. I argue that the organizational framework of the Anti-Fascist Women’s Front (AWF) under the guidance of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) emphasized women’s ethnic/religious identities along with distinct social standings and geographic locations to motivate them to fight for the common cause and subsequently forge a shared South Slavic identity. This emphasis on ethnic/regional/class differences paradoxically led to the creation of a common Yugoslav national identity. Women’s involvement, therefore, becomes central to the nationbuilding in the post-war period while establishing the legacy for future feminists. I characterize NLM as a Marxist guerrilla movement with the intent to contextualize the organizational tactics and ideological efforts of CPY and showcase the commonalities and differences the Yugoslav resistance movement had vis-à-vis other revolutionary movements that actively recruited women. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the representations of Partizankas in popular culture and official rhetoric from WWII to the demise of Yugoslavia in 1991 in order explore the fluidity of gender roles and their perceptions. This research is meaningful because NLM, as an organized Marxist guerrilla movement, stands out in its size, success and legacy. The Yugoslav experience broadens the understanding of why women go to war, how gender norms shift during and after the conflict, and how female soldiers are remembered.

How are technologies are designed and used tactically by activists? As the HCI community starts to contend with social inequalities, there has been debate about how HCI researchers should address approach this type of research. However, there is little research examining practitioners such as social justice activists who confront social problems, and are using technology, such as mobile phones, blogging, and social media to do so. In this dissertation, I build on this knowledge within the context of a social movement organization working to stop street harassment (harassment towards women and minorities in public) called Hollaback (ihollaback.org). I position myself as an action researcher doing research and building technologies such as mobile apps and a blogging platform to collect stories of harassment and to support activists. The organization has collected over 3000 stories and represents 50 different locales in 17 countries. Through a series of studies, I examined how technology impacts the organization, activists, and those who contribute stories of harassment. I found evidence that the storytelling platform helps participants fundamentally shift their cognitive and emotional orientation towards their experience and informs what activists do on the ground. My results suggest that doing activism using technology can help remove some barriers to participation but can also lower expectations for the amount of work required. I also looked at how different social media tactics can increase the number of followers and how traditional media plays a role in these tactics. My work contributes theoretically to the HCI community by building on social movement theory, feminist HCI, and action research methodology. My investigation also sheds light empirically on how technology plays a role in a social movement organization, and how it impacts those who participate.

Private and public sector organizations have become increasingly interested in promoting diversity. Due to barriers attributed to race and gender, women and minorities often find it hard to break through the glass ceiling. Mentoring is a tool to assist with breaking through the glass ceiling. This interest has led to extensive growth in mentoring research and the design of a more expanded concept, developmental networks. Little empirical research informs our understanding of Black women in developmental networks and their political identities within those networks. This qualitative study, within the framework of grounded theory method and of case study research, examines two research questions: (1)What do Black women federal senior executives value within their developmental networks? (2)How do Black women federal senior executives construct political identity within their developmental networks? Applying the conceptual framework of Black feminist thought and developmental network support theories the study examined the developmental relationships of three Black women senior executives. This research highlights the development of a group of high achievers and the contributions of their self-identified support systems. Data analysis from unstructured person-to-person interviews, a questionnaire, and researcher theoretical memos identified the themes support network, self-definition and self-determination, and ecology of life. The most visible codes were significant friendship, workplace behavior, social network composition, and Black woman. In conclusion, the women valued relationships that produced psychosocial outcomes such as friendship, trust, honesty, direct feedback, and reciprocity. They also valued relationships where they received workplace guidance and career exposure from mentor, friend, sponsor, and ally developers within or outside of the workplace. The women developed networks that provided closeness and consisted of developers from different social arenas. They defined their political identities, roles, coping strategies for life challenges and fostered relationships that recognized the importance of ethnic/racial respect, and understanding personal strength. In addition, the women preferred informal developmental relationships with Black and male developers of different ages. Due to a small sample size, self-reported data and the application of grounded theory method, the findings of this study were interpreted with caution. Provided were recommendations for future research and practice.

This present thesis aimed to study the World March of Women – WMW - as a network of feminist social movements in their historical process and ways of acting locally and globally in the 2000s. It sought to know what are the potential and challenges that the configuration of WMW as a network of social movements brings to face the oppression and domination forms experienced by women. The main conceptual references handle Social Movements, Networks, Networks of Social Movements and Feminist Movements. From the methodological point of view, nature of the research is qualitative, in the case study, and included documental bibliographic and field researches. Eight testimonies of participants of the research were collected, whose content analysis showed that network configuration of social movements of WMW favors the articulation of the various feminist movements and others social movements around a common platform, locally and globally, to combat various forms of oppression and domination experienced by women. This outcome evidences, however, that for a convergent political performance, the set of WMW member institutions have the need to overcome difficulties in order to construct common agendas to various organizations, while respecting the objectives and forms of action of different groups

In view of the active presence of several feminist social movements on the internet in recent years, questions are raised as to their communicative skills in relation to their audiences. These movements use social networks as a means of promoting discussions around issues that concern them. Therefore, this study proposes to investigate the factors that directly influence the communicative process between a social movement and its target audience on the internet. For this purpose, the social movement Marcha das Vadias, from the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, was selected as the study object. Starting from theoretical principles of communication and contemplating enunciative, sociological and cultural studies on: social movements, digital communication, network activism, feminism, image and body, this work analyzes, through the quantitative technique of content analysis, the construction of communication of this movement on your Facebook page, as well as the webpage public's perception of this communication. In addition, both this construction of communication and this perception of the target audience are also analyzed using qualitative techniques of semiotic analysis and focus group. Such analysis showed the need for the social movement to include in its communication matters that involve, more visibly, the reality of several social minorities in which Brazilian women are included. With this, the movement would be able to better understand the basic needs of these minorities and, thus, also fight for them, gaining greater representation. Furthermore, this study highlighted the current importance of the internet as a means of communication and as a space for socio-political discussion, especially for social movements, which aim to unite people in favor of a common cause and, for that, they need to pay attention to socio-historical-political-cultural contexts in which they and their audiences are inserted, so that, thus, they create an adequate and responsible communication.

The appreciation of the territory, the environment and gender equality in the semiarid region suggests alternative development standards, which mobilized small producers and organizations for the construction of Xique Xique Network for Partnership Marketing. The proposal of the various social and political actors involved was to create a network that could make feasible the direct marketing of goods produced in the semiarid of Rio Grande do Norte from a development experience that would combine to the Solidarity Economy (Ecosol), the feminism and the agroecology, due to the commitments that those take to social justice. The creation of the Network, however, began to articulate the political training and technical qualification of the producers, in partnership with other social networks and with the government. The ECOSOL proposes economic, social and environmental empowerment of communities from cooperation and self-management of collective work, based on the premise that the training productive relations that are fairer, sustainable and non-hierarchical can be a viable experience of alternative development, not focused on economic growth, but on generating well-being. These perspectives are also promoted by the agroecology, which advocates, in addition, production systems that combine agriculture to ecology, as well as by the feminism, which perceived the ECOSOL and the agroecology as feminist strategies of empowerment. In this context, the central question of this thesis is to analyze the agroecology, the feminism and the ECOSOL through the Xique Xique Network have contributed to promote alternative development experiences in the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte. The desired overall objective therefore is to evaluate the effects of the ECOSOL, coupled with agroecology, the empowerment of women of semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte through alternative development experiences promoted by Network Xique Xique. As for the methodology, it is research-participant with qualitative approaches, descriptive and exploratory, with data collection through field research with carrying out semi-structured and open interviews. In addition, sources of documentary and bibliographic information were used. After interactions with partner organizations, professionals, consumers and network of women's groups, it was observed that women's organization promoted by the network, focused on a feminist political formation, set up as an alternative development experience, as changes on the productive and on the relational female patterns were identified, with a greater appreciation of collective work and food security, and also to realize the expansion of spaces for social participation of women, given their roles in associations, forums, informal groups. Members of the Network, as a rule, do not separate life from work; they fight for policies that recognize the semiarid region's potential; They are willing to improve their skills, which make the network an important support both the promotion and preservation of environmental goods of semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte, as in the correction of historical gender inequality, particularly in rural areas. However, the challenges of discontinuity groups and public policies, and the disproportion of public investment remain, which are decisive factors for increasing experiences promoted by the network for complying its principles.

The purpose of this feminist action research project was to produce a practical support volunteer training and manual for the Georgia Reproductive Justice Access Network (GRJAN). Founded in 2011, GRJAN is a grassroots, reproductive justice abortion fund that provides abortion funding and until 2012, practical support (lodging, transportation, and childcare) to low-income individuals seeking abortion services in Atlanta, GA. The resultant thesis is a reflective essay upon the project, documenting and analyzing the successes and failures of the project as well as discussing the limitations of pursuing feminist activist work within the academy.

Minerva Teichert (1888-1976) was a twentieth-century American artist, who spent most of her life residing in remote towns in the West, earnestly balancing the demands of family and ranching, and painting scenes of her beloved Western frontier. Her steady and significant production of art is remarkable for any artist, and particularly compelling when one considers her time constraints, inaccessibility of art supplies, distance from other artists and art centers, and lack of public attention. The success of women artists during the first half of the twentieth-century was dependent not only upon their artistic aptitude, but also upon external forces, such as family, friends, and mentors. As an artist during this era, Teichert benefitted especially from the circles of women who surrounded her, offering sympathy, encouragement, assistance, a ready network of support, and who enabled her to pursue her passion, which she succinctly described, “I must paint.” This thesis employs a methodological framework informed by feminist, collective conscience, and social network theories in order to elucidate an artist's vision that transcends feminist viewpoints and western heroic individualism. The reality of female networks in Teichert's life translates not only to the certainty of women within a Western mythology dominated by men but also to a powerful counter-narrative where collaboration and community are essential to the success of settlements in the American West. Here Teichert introduces an altogether different vision and story. In her pioneer paintings, composed during the 1930s and 1940s, one sees a reflection of her own life, and that of her pioneer ancestors, which emphasizes the feminine, the importance of collaboration, and the centrality of community.

This study pursued the answer to the following central question: “How the effect of women empowerment policies promoted by the federal program of Territórios da Cidadania occurs on female representation in the 2008 elections and 2012?". The federal program Territories of Citizenship, Federal Decree 11,503 / 2008, has as its main goal, to promote economic development and to universalize basic citizenship programs. One of its most important pillars to achieve this goal is to produce actions to overcome gender inequalities. This federal program is organized on scale form because it has as performance basis a set of municipalities that have similarities on economic and environmental characteristics, cultural identity commonalities and social cohesion. On this sense, the research will focus its analysis on the municipal elections, especially in election financing networks and proportional gender representation of councilors chambers seeking to compare the electoral pleas of 2008 and 2012 to analyze the effectiveness of policies implemented there. For this, we used elections data available on TSE website structured on electoral database. The database was set up on network donations of both claims and the resulted statistics analysis highlighted the evidence of a change, occurred in these municipalities on both elections. The research undertaken shows that the position of women in electoral financing networks is essential for the achievement of success on the conquest of places in the municipal legislature. The central position in investments have been achieved by women who already have family translation in the political field as well as a wide sociability in local institutions, thus becoming, targets lenders. However, the great mass of women candidates, have a low profile on professional and educational qualifications, and little chance of attracting financial partnerships, hurting their chances of electoral success.

The purpose of this study was to discover what impact, if any, personal social networks have on an individual’s snowboarding skill progression, and whether any differences emerge based on gender, class, race, or age. Interviews with 10 demographically diverse snowboarders in Washington State, USA, were conducted and analyzed. The study revealed that personal social networks are highly important to snowboarding skill progression, with nine progression benefits noted. It was also found that the type of relationship was important, with the roles of gatekeepers, “godfathers,” and crews as the most critical for progression. Lastly, respondents indicated a variety of methods to access social networks, including social media, events, organizations, industry employment and through existing social networks. To further analyze the findings, an intersectional feminist reading of Castells networking theory was applied, with investigations into gender, race, class, and age patterns. The analysis revealed two overlapping values systems, one based on snowboarding ability and commitment, and one based on alignment of demographics with those who are most valued in the snowboarding world--mainly young, white, middle class men. The research closes with potential solution ideas to improve equitability and inclusion, which can be applied from the grassroots level to large-scale implementation.

This study aims to investigate the construction process of collective identities in the social movement Slut Walk SM, collective action empirically located in Santa Maria, center of Rio Grande do Sul state in southern Brazil, from network communication dynamics built between the online and offline environments. We start, therefore, the conceptual approach that shapes the contemporary social movements along the processes of communication and information. Taking this premise in mind, we turn to the context of digital networks ubiquity and the Internet communication to reflect its appropriation in the effectuation and coordination of collective actions organization developed nowadays. With emphasis on communication processes, the work is performed from ethnographic experience in a communication research, in particular, from the combination of a field observations between online and offline environments. Thus, from a previous literature review, we define the cultural social movements as the Slut Walk, as analytical constructs developed around actions related to collective identities, oppositions, conflicts and struggle projects. Moreover, with the gender theory we present a brief conceptual framework about the universe of contemporary feminism and its contextual crossings on the ground of communication. Also, with the network society concept, we reflect the particularities of a social context organized through the communication and technological changes, and relate to the current configuration of the network social movements. From this, the research focuses on the interpretation of the research field reaching the settings that constitute the Slut Walk - SM as a social movement anchored by network communication logic through social uses of a Page and a Group of discussion in the social network Facebook. In the end, the study revealed that the communication network integrates the dynamics of identity construction of the Slut Walk under the scope of the differences, of gender policies, and senses about feminism. Senses, that are deliberate from the positions, opinions, debates and conflicts between the subjects in networks and on the streets.

Much has been written recently in mainstream media about sex robots. However, due to the recent developments in this area of robotic and AI technologies, few academics have critically addressed these humanoid sexual technologies through the frameworks provided by Feminist Technoscience Studies. Through utilizing this critical lens, this thesis works with the tools of becoming-with (Haraway 2004a) and intra-action (Barad 2003) to explore the ways in which sexual technologies manufactured by American company Abyss Creations are co-actors in complicated material-semiotic networks. In line with Haraway (2004a) and Barad (2003), this thesis argues that realities are made through ongoing material-discursive practices, practices which are intra-actions of desire, bacteria, companionship, synthetic cognitive algorithms, capitalism, app programing, Wikipedia, and robo-human becoming-with and becoming-without. It is through these webs of becoming-with and –without that these technologies exhibit relational agency. This thesis argues to view Abyss Creation’s sex robots in a framework of relational co-construction is to begin improving our understandings of the complicated ways in which humans, nonhumans, technology, systems, and forces are co-actors in techno-social networks.

A variety of research has been done on why it is important to include local women in peace processes to gain a more sustainable peace. Despite this, there is a limited amount of information and research about women mediation networks and their aim to empower local women peacebuilders. This research explores how women mediation networks can support and empower women in conflict resolutions in relation to the Swedish Feminist Foreign Policy and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. By using semi-structured interviews and literature analysis, a case study of the Swedish Women’s Mediation Network will be conducted. The analysis of the Swedish Women’s Mediation Network, reveals that the network mainly works with the representation of women and uses capacity-building to empower women in other regions. This research brings more awareness to the Women Mediation Networks and their mission to increase the number of women in peace processes.

I have explored spaces, where negotiations of border transgressions take place and where issues of technology and politics mingle. We meet a diversity of actors in the world of information technology (IT): political texts, people and technology participating in numerous sociomaterial relations. Time is the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the new millennium, 2000. Years, when IT occupied the western world and created its own fuzzy discourse. Years, when IT stole the biggest newspaper headlines and years, when IT became a mundane everyday part of our work practices. Years, when we learned to live in heterogeneous worlds. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and Actor-Network Theory and After (ANTa) provide analytical and methodological perspectives when working with the empirical material. I present a chronological exposé of some of the key concepts of ANT and ANTa. I also discuss how the classical ANT perspective has changed during the last few years from being a theory of networks to become a methodological and analytical approach to other kinds of spaces such as fluid and fire. The heart of the thesis consists of six empirical cases. My aim of writing stories of information technology has been to investigate the black box of information technology. Investigating includes also efforts of opening. Concepts that are taken for granted, such as the very notion of information technology in my case, can be explored, questioned, transgressed, blurred and opened up. Each of the diffracted stories is specific and unique, with its own actors, context, location and situatedness. But the stories are also connected through ANT, and feminist technology and technoscience studies. Case number one, ‘Discourses and Cracks – A Case Study of Information Technology and Writing Women in a Regional Context ’, is about a project, where questions concerning discourses of information society with a special focus on citizenship are discussed and where global and national politics are translated to local and situated practices. Case number two, ‘Translating and Negotiating Information Technology ’, consists of two main parts. The fi rst one is about a regional library project. The analysis of the project is based on the classical Actor Network Theory (ANT) approach that invites the study of the heterogeneous and negotiable shaping of IT. The second part is about librarians developing web-based services. The analysis is inspired by the later development of ANT (called ANTa in the thesis) in order to include more invisible actors, relations and negotiations. Case number three, ‘Negotiating Information Technology: Politics and Practices of The Public Sector Web Production’, is about work practices of a municipal web developer, through which creation of sociotechnical relations of everyday information technology practices is analysed and also mirrored to national and local IT politics. Case number four, ‘Making e-Government Happen – Everyday Co-Development of Services, Citizenship and Technology’, is presenting the same web developer as in the third case, but now his everyday practices are connected with an expanded and wider circuit of co-constructors of information technology. The text is a co-production of a multidisciplinary research group aiming to describe, analyse and problematise connections when creating practices, where technology and society collaborate. Case number fi ve, ‘Citizenship at the Crossroads of Multiple Layers of Sociotechnical Relations’, enrols technology as an active actor in the construction of citizenship in an IT context in Sweden. The perspective emphasising the active agency of non-humans both enhances and challenges the Scandinavian approach of systems development by suggesting a direction towards a cyborgian approach towards technology design. Case number six, ‘Between Stability and Instability – a Project about e-Democracy ’, takes its point of departure from a small-scale project having as its goal the development of e-democracy in a municipal context. In the text the focus is on the stabilisation processes in shaping the technology (‘e’) and democracy parts of the project. I also discuss what kinds of spaces exist in between (the hyphen in e-democracy) and ask if integration between technology and democracy is possible as a whole. Finally, my intention is to step further into stories and practices not yet existing. Inspired by the French philosopher Michel Serres, I introduce the fi guration of an angel as a cartographer, intermediator and (co-) constructor of sociomaterial relations. Angels are needed to sew the separate fi elds of technology, politics and everyday practices to a rich seamless tapestry. They are the ‘artful integrators’ (Suchman).

From the earliest times human uses technology and social relations to evolve. And in contemporary times, it is no different. Society is faced with major global and climatic challenges that impact the planet and all the life that inhabits it. In parallel, the feminization of the world and the technological and digital revolution brings great transformations in relations: it promotes an increasingly hyperconnected and collaborative society. At the confluence of these two global trends a new ecology urge. In this context, companies are understood as part of the ecosystem and allied in the plan to protect the planet. The purpose of this paper is to present the study in which it was sought to identify how the top female management perceives digital social networks and integrates them into strategies. It is assumed, therefore, that the contemporary network society demands a new management ability, in order to continue to create value in a sustainable way. The approach thinks of business strategy as part of a complex system, that new technologies change the living conditions, and digital social networks are part of this complex architecture. In addition, this approach aims to discuss the maturity required for the sustainability of business strategies, to identify the role of business management, and also how the feminine inserts in this context. For this purpose, a qualitative study of Multi-Case Analysis was carried out, using documentary analysis, preliminary analysis of networks and interviews with the top female management (among directors, presidents and chairman) of eight companies from different sectors (retail, technology, industry, communication), national and multinational companies operating in Brazil. It can be said that in today's vision of top female management, a transformational business leadership that considers technological change and a holistic vision of the future is necessary to outline strategies that will make the company perennial. And with this, it was concluded, based on this study, that, for the context of Brazil, the feminization of business management and a vision of new network ecology being transformed into a sustainable strategy.

The Vestes of the Body and Melancholy in the Feminine Authorship poetry analyze how three South American poets, from the mid-twentieth century, stitched together his poetic works in some way, in communion. They are poets who took the title of absent from the world, oblivious to the ruptures, individual and selfish, when this work discovered exactly the opposite; his works were entangled within a network however, a network composed only of women writers. Inside of this network, a subnet was born between the three poets in question: Cecília Meireles, Gabriela Mistral and Henriqueta Lisboa. Thus, a literary ciranda formed around of common themes, symbols and myths. The woman's body, seen as absent for a criticism, is now the protagonist of a new aesthetic, the aesthetics of tenderness which brings in itself the force of melancholy. Melancholy in scripture, that's what it is to write with tenderness for our poets and where the body is transfigured in the landscape so that the sensations can overflow the word. The word will be the great struggle of all three, because in its composition it carries concepts that were not created by women. For writing as a woman, in this sense our poets will have to search for the origin, the myth, the whisper, the murmured orality that rescues the beginning of all beginnings. While in relation to the context of tradition, the search will be for the literary mother - the reference poet for that they can build a new tradition, only now, that of female authorship.

This investigation explains the path realized in an interdis ciplinary study of the interface between feminist theology, gender studies, cultural studies and colonial and post- colonial studies. The thesis of this investigation maintains that, in the face of a globalizing system that excludes, oppresse s, controls and marginalizes, women create alternative diversified spaces of resistance and transformation through openings of power for the formulation of rights and access to material and symbolic resources. The objective is to systematiz e the experience of action /mana gement of empowerment of women leaders of churches and social organizations in Lima, Peru. Empowerment is identified as the positive powers of women who gained self-confidence, autonomy, emancipation and resiliency. In this research the memory of exceptional women are recovered based on the histories of their family life, on the beginnings of their leadership in the confrontation with situations of domestic, cultural and economic violence and their interaction in the churches and popular women's movements. These spaces permit them to break out of the traditional roles and become protagonists of their rights. In their personal trajectory and their encounter with social and feminist movements and in dialog with these one is able to articulate other discussions and create other agendas of structural change. The research is composed of four chapters. The first chapter deals with an analysis of the situation: the social, political and cultural situation of the Peruvian society limited to the decade of the 1990's with the worsening of the violence experienced by the Peruvian society and the struggles of the women's organizations in the last decades. But this situation does not appear from nowhere. There are historical antecedents of colonial women and their written and spoken discussions that struggled against the gender violence in the country. The second chapter is the theoretical framework and the interdisciplinary intersections between Latin American feminist theology and social sciences about empowerment based on the word, corporeality and spaces of power. The third chapter narrates the life history of the subjects of the research and the researcher, converting them into protagonists of and within the text. The discursive practice of the exceptional women is placed in dialog with the academic world in a systematic manner as agents of knowledge. The fourth chapter is a production of narrative theology based on the testimon ies of the women. The challeng e is to show that the experiences of suffering and emancipation criticize and demand the promotion of human dignity. These are the experiences that give sustenance to a theology of daily living and a theology of spaces for revelation. The spaces of enunciation are the most unusual because they break with the private and public, the sacred and the profane, the traditional and the modern that surge forth in networks of sociability for the human social and eco logical sustainability.

2. Tay is you. The attribution of responsibility in the algorithmic culture. 3. 4. Your likes, your vote? A feminist view on privacy and personal data protection.
This doctoral thesis reflects on the social and political impact of big data exploitation at the European level. The research fulfils two main objectives. Firstly, it defines the general context in which this exploitation is embedded, through the analysis of five factors: a) the logic of big data generation, gathering and processing; b) the business model of digital services corporations; c) the dominant media discourse on big data technologies; d) the social reactions and forms of resistance to this new scenario; and e) the European regulation on personal data protection, including its conceptual foundations. Secondly, it discusses to what extent these five factors favour or hinder privacy, freedom and control over data, from the lens of critical theory of capitalism, republican philosophy, feminist political theory and framing theory. The study consists of five publications: 1. 2. Tay is you. The attribution of responsibility in the algorithmic culture. 3. 4. Your likes, your vote? A feminist view on privacy and personal data protection. This report contextualizes, organizes and connects the main contributions of these papers.
This case study provides an analysis on how working women mothers in Brazil articulate themselves in a feminist network born on social media (Maternativa) to generate collective empowerment, raise awareness about oppression and mobilize around work rights. Using qualitative methods such as insider participant observation, interviews and content analysis, it investigates how participatory-related communicative practices and feminism interplay on digital and interpersonal environments fostering dialogue, conscientization and, potentially, a “political turn” in the collective’s agenda. Theoretical underpinnings include Manuel Castells’ network society, participatory communication and Paulo Freire’s theories on oppressed subjects, as well as insights from matricentric and black feminisms. The validity of (feminist) participatory practices for the strengthening of women mothers’ grass-roots movements and its potential applicability to mitigate the limitations of social media are some of the conclusions offered. Despite challenges typical of social movements and a significant “white woman bias”, participation has been able to produce an expanded awareness of the different systems of oppression. As a result, women’s discourse and engagement inside the network has become increasingly political and critical regarding structural power relations in the Brazilian society.

Seventy-five percent of women offenders confined to prison, jails, or residential treatment programs are custodial parents of minor children at the time of their separation. Little is known, though, about how prosocial networks are used to address the effects of separation from children. Using Bui and Morash's conceptualization of the theory of gendered pathways, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand, from the perspective of incarcerated women, the experience of using prosocial networks to cope with the effects of separation. Data were collected through interviews with 10 mothers from 2 residential treatment programs in Michigan. Interview data were inductively coded, then subjected to a thematic analysis procedure. A key finding of this study was that women experience remorse, embarrassment, helplessness, and a sense of failure with respect to providing adequate care for their children and rely on their mothers or other female family members as the primary prosocial influence. Findings also suggest that Child Protective Services (CPS) is viewed by participants as intrusive and outside the prosocial network, yet significant to family reunification and permanency planning for children. Implications for positive social change include recommendations to criminal justice policymakers and Child Protective Services to consider provisions for supportive services for gender-specific programs that build on the influence of other, prosocial, female family members and promote a clear pathway to permanency planning for families, particularly where minor children are involved.
