This paper shows Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified hospitality properties exhibit increased expenses and earn lower net operating income (NOI) than non-certified buildings. ENERGY STAR certified properties demonstrate lower overall expenses than non-certified buildings with statistically neutral NOI effects. Using a custom sample of all green buildings and their competitive data set as of 2013 provided by Smith Travel Research (STR), the paper documents potential reasons for this result including increased operational expenses, potential confusion with certified and registered LEED projects in the data, and qualitative input. The qualitative input comes from a small sample survey of five industry professionals. The paper provides one of the only analyses on operating efficiencies with LEED and ENERGY STAR hospitality properties.

Purpose Unlike some developed countries, Chinese food safety certification system is multi-level including organic/green/hazard-free certifications. The purpose of this paper is to assess consumers’ preferences for tomatoes carrying these different labels. Design/methodology/approach Data used in this study came from choice experiments (CEs) conducted in Shandong province, China. Based on experiment data, a random parameter logit model was established to analyze consumers’ willingness-to-pay (WTP). Findings Consumers’ WTP for organic tomatoes was higher than that for hazard-free and green-certified tomatoes. Furthermore, consumers’ WTP for the European Union (EU) organic label was higher than that for the Chinese organic label, whereas a non-significant difference existed between the levels of consumers’ WTP for hazard-free and green-certified tomatoes. Consumers with different food safety risk perception (FSRP) had large differences in WTP, whereas those with varying environmental awareness (ENAW) had similar levels of WTP. Originality/value This contribution is the first research which focuses on consumers’ WTP for EU organic label, Chinese organic label, green label, or hazard-free label on tomato through CEs in China. Furthermore, the influence of consumers’ FSRP and ENAW on their preference was analyzed through a random parameter logit model.

PurposeThe objective of this study is to assess if Italian fish consumers are sensible to shark protection and if they would contribute paying more for small pelagic fishes coming from fisheries that are certified as “shark-free”.Design/methodology/approachContingent valuation is used to estimate willingness to pay with a double approach, including a dichotomous choice and an open-ended question. Inconsistency between the two answers is allowed. This allows the correction of two sources of bias (i.e. preference uncertainty and anchoring effect) and has permitted that the two estimation methods converged to the same result.FindingsConsumers show interest for the “shark-free” label. Premium price is estimated at +26%. Variables affecting willingness to pay (WTP) in the sample are age, income, environmental attitude, knowledge of organic labels and frequency of small pelagics' consumption. Results need to be confirmed by a replication on a larger (probabilistic) sample and with a different distribution of bids.Originality/valueEcosystems provide different benefits to humankind, including non-use services, such as the satisfaction to know that a species is well conserved. Generally, appreciation is higher for what are considered charismatic species. In this paper, the authors investigate if sharks can be considered charismatic species despite their “bad reputation”. The interest in shark survival is measured indirectly using a “shark-free” label on a commercial species like anchovy, allowing to increase the value added of this low-price species.

Анотація:
The attitudes of departmental managers towards eco-labels are extremely important for the realization of sustainable tourism practices in accommodation enterprises. Research focused on determining the attitudes of hotel managers towards eco-labels is very limited. Therefore, the first aim of this study was to determine the attitude of departmental managers towards eco-labels applied in the context of sustainable tourism. The second purpose of this study was to determine whether the sustainable tourism and management activities of accommodation enterprises that did and did not have an eco-label were differentiated. To this end, this study was designed and conducted with a sample of 408 hotel managers in 83 different accommodation enterprise. Data were collected through questionnaires using convenience sampling, which is a non-probability sampling method. As a result of this research, it was determined that the attitudes of managers towards eco-labels differed according to their personal and professional characteristics. Another important finding of this study was that the sustainable management and operation activities of the hotels differed significantly according to whether or not they were eco-labeled certified. Overall, it is obvious that eco-labels have a significant impact on the implementation of environmentally friendly, responsible, and sustainable tourism practices in the accommodation sector.

Анотація:
Purpose: Home industry of tahu and tempe products plays a role in developing economic growth, especially in Bandarlampung City, Indonesia. However, its non-degradable plastic packaging creates harmful environmental effects. In line with this, certified halal-healthy labeling required by Muslim consumers. Therefore, this community service aimed to help the tahu and tempe entrepreneurs in Gunung Sulah Village, Bandarlampung city to know, be aware, and understand the role of zero plastics packaging and certified halal-healthy labeling through training and coaching program. Method: The method used is training and coaching, and then followed by monitoring and evaluation. Results: The results show that knowledge, awareness, and understanding insights of the tahu tempe entrepreneurs increase after joining the training and coaching programs. Conclusion: The entrepreneurs need the alternative zero plastic packagings and are aware that certified halal-healthy labeling is essential to show in the packaging so that the market extends to the modern market; consequently, market share and competitive advantage can improve.

Steel slag is a major waste product of the steelmaking process. Owing to its chemical composition, it can be reused as a raw material in steel mills and a substitute for aggregates in engineering. In 2016, the Republic of Korea (ROK) introduced the Environmental Assessment of Recycling (EAoR) system for the safe recycling of waste products, which divides recycling methods into either matrix contact or non-matrix contact types; numerous challenges have been raised regarding weaknesses in the matrix contact type. Consequently, the standards for matrix contact recycling of slag (inorganic waste) have become stricter, and the recycling applications have also become more diverse. This study investigates the treatment, recycling, and management of steel slag in the ROK. In 2019, the annual generation of slag in the ROK exceeded 23.03 million tons with a recycling rate of 98.3%, showing a high level of recycling, compared with that of the United States (81.3%), the European Union (87%), Australia (100%), and Japan (98.4%). However, a comparative analysis of overseas slag recycling systems and recycling standards found that the recycling applications and recycling standards of slag in the ROK were somewhat stricter than those in the European Union and the United States. Furthermore, an investigation comparing the applications of recycled slag in different countries showed that the ROK could expand its applications of recycled slag. The limitation of the EAoR system was that the excluding products, environmentally certified from Korean Standards in the EAoR regulations, might be attributing to environmental pollution. The leaching and toxicity tests for recycling application of steelmaking slag were evaluated and showed no significant negative effects. Lastly, there is an urgent need for environmental standards relating to slag that can be recycled as a product, and the recycling and environmental label certification for products should also be amended. In addition, the applications of steelmaking slag were necessary to partially extend according to the hazardous characteristics.

abstract A liquid chromatographic method is described for analysis of all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate, tocopherols, and retinyl palmitate in milk-based infant formula. The vitamins are extracted from infant formula without saponification by matrix solid-phase dispersion and quantitated by normal-phase chromatography with fluorescence detection. Retinyl palmitate and vitamin E are quantitated isocratically with mobile phases of 0.125% (v/v) and 0.5% (v/v) isopropyl alcohol in hexane, respectively. Results were similar to the certified and non-certified ranges for all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate, retinyl palmitate, and tocopherols in the infant formula standard reference material (SRM) 1846. Results also compared favorably with the label declaration on a retail infant formula. Recoveries were determined on an analyte-fortified zero control reference material for milk-based infant formula and averaged 96.8% (n = 30) for retinyl palmitate and 91.5% (n = 25) for all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate. Examination of 5 concentrations for each analyte gave results that were linear (r = 0.999) over the concentration examined, with coefficients of variation ranging from 1.02 to 5.86%. The method provides a rapid, specific, and easily controlled assay for analysis of retinyl palmitate and vitamin E in fortified infant formula. Additionally, the method minimizes solvent use by using only 14 ml_ solvent per extraction.

We empirically test whether B Corp certification affects the short- and medium-term growth rates of sustainable enterprises. These businesses are growing in popularity and prevalence but, due to their hybrid nature, often suffer from external credibility issues and competing internal logics. Because of the rigorous and time-involving audit procedure, B Corp certification potentially sends a credible signal about the sustainable nature of the enterprise to its stakeholders. In addition, the B Corp label could help to straighten out internal tensions and align the company towards its dual purpose. Hence, B Corp certification could contribute to company success. We observe 129 firms that were certified between 2013 and 2018 over a period between six years prior and five years post-certification. Using propensity score matching, we identify 129 non-certified matching companies. On this sample, we conduct a difference-in-differences panel regression analysis to investigate the effect of certification. Our dataset allows us to study how the effects of B Corp certification evolve over time, which was previously untested. Our study documents a positive effect of B Corp certification on turnover growth and also that this effect increases with the time since certification, implying that certification requires some time for its full effect to become apparent.

Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka kvinnliga modeintresserade konsumenters medvetenhet kring greenwashing i relation till miljömärkningar inom klädindustrin. Vidare syftar studien till att undersöka hur kvinnliga modeintresserade konsumenter uppfattar ett plaggs hållbarhet utifrån miljömärkningar inom klädindustrin. För att besvara studiens syfte har en kvalitativ metod använts där insamling av empiriskt material genomfördes med hjälp av semistrukturerade intervjuer. Baserat på ett antal kriterier valdes tio modeintresserade kvinnor ut till att delta i intervjuerna som genomfördes via Zoom. Studiens resultat påvisar bristande kunskap om begreppet greenwashing vilket tyder på att respondenterna därmed inte är medvetna om greenwashing i relation till miljömärkningar inom klädindustrin. Vidare resulterade studien även i att kvinnliga modeintresserade konsumenter till stor del uppfattar plagg märkta med miljömärkningar som hållbara. Däremot varierar konsumenternas uppfattning om pålitligheten av de olika märkningarna. Vår studie visar att ungefär lika stor andel respondenter uppfattar plagg märkta med certifierade miljömärkningar, såväl som icke-certifierade miljömärkningar, som mer pålitliga. Oavsett märkningens upplevda pålitlighet uppfattade alla respondenter, trots detta, att märkningen bidrog med en känsla av hållbarhet.
The purpose of this study is to examine the awareness of greenwashing in relation toenvironmental labels in the clothing industry, among female fashion-interested consumers.Furthermore, the study aims to investigate how female fashion-interested consumers perceivethe environmental sustainability of a garment based on environmental labels in the clothingindustry. To answer the purpose of this study, a qualitative method was used where thecollection of empirical data was carried out by semi-structured interviews. Based on anumber of criteria, ten fashion-interested women were chosen to participate in interviewsconducted via Zoom.The result of the study demonstrates a lack of knowledge regarding the term greenwashing,which indicates that the respondents also lack awareness of greenwashing in relation toenvironmental labels within the clothing industry. Furthermore, the study demonstrates thatfashion-interested consumers perceive environmental labelled clothing as sustainable.However, the perception of reliability of the various labels varies among the respondents. Ourresult indicates that about half of our respondents perceive environmental labels certified bythird parties as the most trustworthy. Whereas the other half of the respondents perceivenon-certified environmental labels as more reliable. Irrespective of the perceived reliability ofthe environmental label, all respondents agreed that the environmental label in some waycontributed to a feeling of sustainability. This thesis is written in Swedish.
