Significant interspecific variation in DNA amount was observed among nine species of Piper. The DNA amount of a wild octoploid accession of Piper nigrum was approximately double that of the cultivated tetraploid variety of the same species. However, three New World diploid species had higher nuclear DNA amounts than several New or Old World tetraploid species. Nuclear DNA amounts of 28 species of Senecio native to Australia and of four exotic species are reported. DNA amounts per 4C nucleus range from 4.22 pg to 42.90 pg, a 10-fold difference. Some of the variation is due to polyploidy as chromosome numbers range from n = 5 (by dysploid reduction) to n = 50, but DNA amounts per genome also vary from 0.84pg to 4.69 pg, a 6-fold difference. The Drosophila melanogaster w1118 mutant line was used to identify the effect of deuterium (D) on DNA synthesis. D concentrations ranged from 30ppm to 96.89% (low and very high amount respec-tively). Five generations of flies were bred on culture media prepared with 6 concentrations of D. For each generation the DNA was analyzed, and its variability was established. The results showed a small involvement of D in the successive synthesis of nuclear DNA.

The DNA of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCB) was detected in its whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci, by dot spot hybridization as early as 1 h after acquisition access. The retention of the virus nucleic acid in the vector was at least 23 days after a 48 h acquisition access. However, the retention of TYLCV coat protein did not exceed 10 days. No replicative forms of TYLCV could be detected in B. tabaci, indicating a non-propagative relationship with the vector.
