A new engraving of a horse head has been discovered during a recent re-examination of the Magdalenian osseous projectile point assemblage from La Madeleine curated in the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale (St-Germain-en-Laye, France). Found on one side of an unmodified tip of reindeer tine, this piece was uncovered in amongst a collection of distal (tip) fragments of antler sagaies. While this piece is not unique to La Madeleine – a number of similar pieces having been recovered in early excavations at this site – it nonetheless contributes another small piece of information regarding Magdalenian mobiliary art. The horse engraving is compared with other known finds from La Madeleine, as well as several additional Magdalenian sites in order to outline its place in the current state of knowledge regarding these enigmatic artefacts.

Through measurement the sizes of the head and neck at all kinds of activity state was obtained. It was analyzed to get the parameters of the structure of hood, such as the length and the width of hood, which accord with the movement of the head and neck. According to the parameters, two-piece hood was drafted. By comparison and analysis with human body data, it can be drawn the two-piece hood is not good in fitness and aesthetics and three-piece hood is more fitted structure. The width of the middle piece has a big effect on structure of the three-piece hood. A mathematical model about the relationship between the width of the middle piece with the head circumference and hood length can be got with the multiple linear regression in SPSS, so that the optimal three-piece hood can be got just with head circumference and hood length.

Current badminton rackets are typically made out of steel, aluminium, or carbon fibre. Although these materials perform acceptably, there are some downsides to their properties. However, these non-ideal characteristics of badminton rackets may be overcome with the usage of different manufacturing materials, specifically braided composites. An example of a braided material is KevlarⓇ. Kevlar is a heat resistant and high strength synthetic fibre that can be manufactured into braids using a maypole braiding system. These Kevlar braids can then be manipulated to a preferred shape for the curing process. In order to come up with a feasible design to base the prototype, a 3D modelling software (SolidWorksTM) is used. This ensures geometrical viability and possible to manufacture of the prototype. Modeling a badminton racket on Solidworks required the modelling of a racket head, and handle. The head was created using 2 ellipses, one of which acted as a skeleton, or mould for the Kevlar braid, and the other was a hollow ellipse which encompassed the mold and acted as the Kevlar braid. The solid ellipse was created in two halves, each having either an extrusion or a hole in the ends. This allowed them to easily attach to form a full ellipse. Once modeled, the solid ellipse was 3D printed to act as the curing mandrel, an internal skeleton for the Kevlar braids. In order to attach the head to the handle, a three-part connector piece was created and 3D printed. The rod of the racket was not created with an internal skeleton because the flexibility would falter. Instead, the Kevlar braids were slid off the material after curing and attached to the racket heads connector piece. In order to have a balanced weight ratio throughout the racket, the grip was created with an internal 3D printed skeleton. This structure allowed for a feasible, flexible, and strong Kevlar based product.

Selected haemetophagous phthirapterans have been convicted to act as reservoir and transmitter of pathogens among their hosts. Amblyceran Phthiraptera are generally believed to exhibit varying degree of haemetophagy. The microscopic examination of 100 adults (both sexes) and 47 nymphal instars of an amblyceran louse, Colpocephalum turbinatum revealed their non haemetophagous nature as any red content compatible with host blood was not detected in their crops. The crops of the lice were found packed with only feather barbules. On seven instances the pieces of egg chorion and in 20 cases the presence of epidermal tissue were also detected in crop contents. However, the presence of any triturating agent (any structure which can help in grinding the feather contents) was not noticed. SEM studies on the ventral side of the head of the louse do not indicate the presence of any pointed gear which can be used to pierce the skin blood vessels of host. Present study suggests that few amblyceran species of Phthiraptera are not in haemetophagous in nature.

Original studies leading to the gravitational model of pulmonary blood flow and contemporary studies showing gravity-independent perfusion differ in the recent use of laboratory animals instead of humans. We explored the distribution of pulmonary blood flow in baboons because their anatomy, serial distribution of vascular resistances, and hemodynamic responses to hypoxia are similar to those of humans. Four baboons were anesthetized with ketamine, intubated, and mechanically ventilated. Different colors of fluorescent microspheres were given intravenously while the animals were in the supine, prone, upright (repeated), and head-down (repeated) postures. The animals were killed, and their lungs were excised, dried, and diced into ∼2-cm3 pieces with the spatial coordinates recorded for each piece. Regional blood flow was determined for each posture from the fluorescent signals of each piece. Perfusion heterogeneity was greatest in the upright posture and least when prone. Using multiple-stepwise regression, we estimate that 7, 5, and 25% of perfusion heterogeneity is due to gravity in the supine, prone, and upright postures, respectively. Although important, gravity is not the predominant determinant of pulmonary perfusion heterogeneity in upright primates. Because of anatomic similarities, the same may be true for humans.

Songkok Celleng is the mention of headgear for men in terms of the Maduresecommunity or often referred to as a cap and kopyah. The head covering or known asSongkok Celleng is a complementary part in dressing for the santri (student in IslamicBoarding School), traditional clothing in the community to clothing for bureaucratswho have an implicit significance in its use. In this scientific work, the writer uses asemiotic qualitative method according to Charles Sanders Pierce who specificallydescribes that the sign is able to represent something else. In addition, Pierce alsodefines the sign as something that can not be separated from the object of referenceand understanding of the subject of signs with trichotomy: representamen, interpretants and objects. From the research conducted, the conclusions that can beshown by the author are: (1) Songkok celleng (representamen) is a santri identitycontaining philosophical meaning of obedience or submission (interpretant) in theform of a head covering (object). (2) Songkok celleng is always present with the spiritof nationalism introduced by the First President of Indonesia (Sukarno) that SongkokCelleng is a national identity also strengthened by government regulations issuedduring the Soekarno administration.

Although oralCandidaeasily adheres to denture base materials, many denture detergents are effective only against bacteria but not againstCandida. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which are known to have potent antibacterial and antifungal activity, have been used in the prevention of oral candidiasis (OC). We evaluated the adherence ofCandida albicansandCandida glabrataon a heat-cured Acron resin piece supported by AgNPs by low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and measuring colony-forming units.C. albicansandC. glabrataincreasingly adhered to the resin surface of the control piece over time, but the adhesion AgNP of bothCandidaspecies to the AgNP-coated surface was significantly inhibited (P<0.001). Low-vacuum SEM revealed thatC. albicansandC. glabrataon the resin surface of control pieces appeared as oval colonies, with a major axis of 3-4 μm and a smooth cell wall, but those on the AgNP-coated resin surface were less abundant than the control and showed swollen yeast features, with a major axis of more than 5 μm and a corrugated cell wall. Our results suggest a way to prevent denture-associated OC by using denture base materials processed by AgNPs.

This article is a script of a performance at the 2018 PhEmaterialism conference in London, UK. In this script, I offer a series of bodily confessions, experimental tales of making a Body without Organs (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987) on the neoliberal academic stratum. Each tale moves between the stratifying forces of the neoliberal academy that seek to organize my organism and experimentations that seek to produce different and more freeing organizations for my organs. Each tale talks back to the priests of the neoliberal academy by telling what happens to an organism, my organism-my body, as I try to make a Body without Organs. To situate the script, I provide a lengthy appendix that details narrative reflexivity (Spry, 2011) decisions about the script and performance. Like any performance piece, the piece is to be viewed, heard, and experienced, rather than read. Performance pieces are not and should not be read as typical journal articles. They are their own genre of writing that eschews traditional notions of writing. With this in mind, this appendix provides narrative reflexivity about the performance (Spry, 2011) for readers who may need it.

At the end of last December, Staš Vrenko, Slovenian artist and explorer of sound matter, displayed a system of unique sound machines entitled Loops in Transmission that could be seen, heard and used at Osmo/za. We hear the whirring of machines produced by electromathematical processes. But Vrenko is not interested in what we hear but in what sonicity is produced by the media machines that we handle every day. Half-way between sonic art and DIY engineering, Vrenko’s piece uses the support of media and archaeological theory to open the exploration of events in the media-technological time and their implicitly sonic nature. By doing so, it also explores the sound ontology of media environment. These are also the emphases tackled in this review.

In today's car industries, low investment costs and high production rates are sought. By using nut piercing in the stamping dies in the manufacture of body components, otherwise necessary subsequent tempos can be reduced. The goal of the work was to implement nut piercing from below in a reference die to be able to use this type of operation in future projects. The main problem when implementing nut piercing from below is to be able to handle and evacuate the scrap piece that remains after the punching. By studying the equipment in the reference die, a deeper understanding of the process could be obtained, at the same time as information and necessary material were collected by expertise and the case company's suppliers for nut piercing. The recommendation to the case company provides a solution proposal for scrap evacuation as well as the components involved to be able to carry out the operation.

How do listeners relate to musial instruments that they do not play? This chapter investigates technically mediated modes of listening in the context of Haydn’s horn music. The valveless horns in Haydn’s orchestra had distinctive pitch affordances, which gave rise to several idiomatic figures. This instrumental invariance can shape tonal expectations, affecting how the music appears to listeners. Haydn (and other composers) also used horn calls in compositions for other instrumental forces. If situated listeners are attuned to schematic instrumental textures—if, for example, they can hear virtual horns in a string quartet or piano piece—this implies that their perception is grounded in multimodal experiences of instruments. Like performance, then, listening is both embodied and conditioned by technology.

This chapter addresses the emergence of feelings in the music listener. We hear a sad piece and feel sad, but we are not sad about the music, and nothing bad has happened to us. Some philosophers have therefore concluded that music cannot elicit emotion. Instead, perhaps we are confusing the emotion we hear expressed in the music with the emotion we feel. But research shows that people do feel emotions from music, and they distinguish the emotions they hear in the music from the emotions the music makes them feel. There is no empirical support for the philosophical position that we do not experience emotion from music. However, emotions from music are softened by aesthetic distance—we know these emotions are caused by the music and not by a life event. The chapter concludes with a consideration of some conflicting evidence about whether the emotional response to music is innate or influenced by one’s musical culture.

This piece considers the paradoxical reception of Vitruvius and his text, De architectura, as a bellwether of attitudes towards traditionally marginal texts and authors within the discipline of classics. Classicizing figures of the Renaissance such as Alberti sought to emulate Vitruvius’ architectural recommendations but criticized his prose. A break from the holistic esteem in which Vitruvius was held in earlier ages, such attacks on Vitruvius’ Latinity catalysed distinct patterns in the reception of De architectura, placing the text and its author (though not his architectural aesthetics) on the margins of ‘the classical’. A survey of more recent critics suggests that such prejudices about Vitruvius’ style and social status remain embedded even in sympathetic treatments of De architectura and that Vitruvius’ choice of Cicero as a literary model all but guarantees his continued marginality within classics as a literary discipline.

This chapter examines Bley's early compositions. According to Bley, her earliest mature work is the twelve-bar blues in F called Donkey, which she probably composed in Los Angeles in 1958. In a collection of her piano music published in 1981, Bley called the melody of the piece “a blues line,” even though it flies by at a rapid pace and seems more akin to bebop melodies than to anything else. Likewise, the short explosion of Ictus (also dated 1958) is to be played “as fast as possible.” Unlike Donkey, which she considered a blues, Ictus does not have chord symbols written in the way then standard for jazz scores. Indeed, many of her early works have a tendency to obscure any sense of metrical regularity through irregular placements of short phrases, held notes across the bar lines, and plenty of rests.

This book is an exploration of the geocultural politics of music sampling. Each chapter delves into one case study—a track, or larger work—from the inside out by starting with the samples that are at the heart of the work. The objective is to unpack how sampled and sampling material work together in light of shifts in the political, economic, and sociocultural contexts of their making, distribution, and reception since. Considering sampling as a material of music, not simply a digital technique or restricted to one sort of music making, addresses an under-explored dimension in studies of the relationship between music (any sort) and politics of the day (usually progressive, social movements). This is a tendency to concentrate on the lyrics as where all the political meaning lies. But this overlooks how sampling, or borrowing from the music made by others, even one’s own, can also be a political act even when this is not the intention. Based on extensive archival research, close-listening musical analysis, and interviews with artists or their estates, each study provides ways to listen, hear (again), and so learn more about how each piece, as sampled and sampling music making, work, on its own musico-cultural terms. Some errors in the public record, misperceptions about some of the works and artists who feature, are corrected in light of debates over the creative, legal, and cultural legacy of music sampling as either “borrowing,” “appropriation,” or even “theft.”

Fighting Fascist Spain pieces together the story of Spanish immigrants in the United States in their fight against fascism, as reflected in the periodical España Libre and the grassroots activism of the organization that sustained that publication, the Sociedades Hispanas Confederadas, or the Confederadas. Although Espana Libre was run by Spanish immigrants and exiles and published in Brooklyn and New York City, the organization had a clear transnational consciousness: old migrants and new exiles coalesced in overlapping communities across the United States that were linked to similar antifascist networks in other countries. Fighting Fascist Spain identifies the web of anarchist, anarcho-syndicalist, and socialist connections that facilitated the political engagement of local activists and organizations and enlarged the global reach of the Confederadas during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939–1975) and until democratic elections were held again in Spain (1977). Using extensive and previously ignored literary, visual, and archival sources, the manuscript explores anarchist literature and antifascist humor. The broad objective of Fighting Fascist Spain is not merely to recover evidence of migrant activism and literature but to articulate how workers’ culture and politics shaped their antifascism.

Nationalism: Past as Prologue began as a single volume being compiled by Ad Akande, a scholar from South Africa, who proposed it to me as co-author about two years ago. The original idea was to examine how the damaging roots of nationalism have been corroding political systems around the world, and creating dangerous obstacles for necessary international cooperation. Since I (Bruce E. Johansen) has written profusely about climate change (global warming, a.k.a. infrared forcing), I suggested a concerted effort in that direction. This is a worldwide existential threat that affects every living thing on Earth. It often compounds upon itself, so delays in reducing emissions of fossil fuels are shortening the amount of time remaining to eliminate the use of fossil fuels to preserve a livable planet. Nationalism often impedes solutions to this problem (among many others), as nations place their singular needs above the common good. Our initial proposal got around, and abstracts on many subjects arrived. Within a few weeks, we had enough good material for a 100,000-word book. The book then fattened to two moderate volumes and then to four two very hefty tomes. We tried several different titles as good submissions swelled. We also discovered that our best contributors were experts in their fields, which ranged the world. We settled on three stand-alone books:” 1/ nationalism and racial justice. Our first volume grew as the growth of Black Lives Matter following the brutal killing of George Floyd ignited protests over police brutality and other issues during 2020, following the police assassination of Floyd in Minneapolis. It is estimated that more people took part in protests of police brutality during the summer of 2020 than any other series of marches in United States history. This includes upheavals during the 1960s over racial issues and against the war in Southeast Asia (notably Vietnam). We choose a volume on racism because it is one of nationalism’s main motive forces. This volume provides a worldwide array of work on nationalism’s growth in various countries, usually by authors residing in them, or in the United States with ethnic ties to the nation being examined, often recent immigrants to the United States from them. Our roster of contributors comprises a small United Nations of insightful, well-written research and commentary from Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, China, India, South Africa, France, Portugal, Estonia, Hungary, Russia, Poland, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and the United States. Volume 2 (this one) describes and analyzes nationalism, by country, around the world, except for the United States; and 3/material directly related to President Donald Trump, and the United States. The first volume is under consideration at the Texas A & M University Press. The other two are under contract to Nova Science Publishers (which includes social sciences). These three volumes may be used individually or as a set. Environmental material is taken up in appropriate places in each of the three books. * * * * * What became the United States of America has been strongly nationalist since the English of present-day Massachusetts and Jamestown first hit North America’s eastern shores. The country propelled itself across North America with the self-serving ideology of “manifest destiny” for four centuries before Donald Trump came along. Anyone who believes that a Trumpian affection for deportation of “illegals” is a new thing ought to take a look at immigration and deportation statistics in Adam Goodman’s The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Deporting Immigrants (Princeton University Press, 2020). Between 1920 and 2018, the United States deported 56.3 million people, compared with 51.7 million who were granted legal immigration status during the same dates. Nearly nine of ten deportees were Mexican (Nolan, 2020, 83). This kind of nationalism, has become an assassin of democracy as well as an impediment to solving global problems. Paul Krugman wrote in the New York Times (2019:A-25): that “In their 2018 book, How Democracies Die, the political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt documented how this process has played out in many countries, from Vladimir Putin’s Russia, to Recep Erdogan’s Turkey, to Viktor Orban’s Hungary. Add to these India’s Narendra Modi, China’s Xi Jinping, and the United States’ Donald Trump, among others. Bit by bit, the guardrails of democracy have been torn down, as institutions meant to serve the public became tools of ruling parties and self-serving ideologies, weaponized to punish and intimidate opposition parties’ opponents. On paper, these countries are still democracies; in practice, they have become one-party regimes….And it’s happening here [the United States] as we speak. If you are not worried about the future of American democracy, you aren’t paying attention” (Krugmam, 2019, A-25). We are reminded continuously that the late Carl Sagan, one of our most insightful scientific public intellectuals, had an interesting theory about highly developed civilizations. Given the number of stars and planets that must exist in the vast reaches of the universe, he said, there must be other highly developed and organized forms of life. Distance may keep us from making physical contact, but Sagan said that another reason we may never be on speaking terms with another intelligent race is (judging from our own example) could be their penchant for destroying themselves in relatively short order after reaching technological complexity. This book’s chapters, introduction, and conclusion examine the worldwide rise of partisan nationalism and the damage it has wrought on the worldwide pursuit of solutions for issues requiring worldwide scope, such scientific co-operation public health and others, mixing analysis of both. We use both historical description and analysis. This analysis concludes with a description of why we must avoid the isolating nature of nationalism that isolates people and encourages separation if we are to deal with issues of world-wide concern, and to maintain a sustainable, survivable Earth, placing the dominant political movement of our time against the Earth’s existential crises. Our contributors, all experts in their fields, each have assumed responsibility for a country, or two if they are related. This work entwines themes of worldwide concern with the political growth of nationalism because leaders with such a worldview are disinclined to co-operate internationally at a time when nations must find ways to solve common problems, such as the climate crisis. Inability to cooperate at this stage may doom everyone, eventually, to an overheated, stormy future plagued by droughts and deluges portending shortages of food and other essential commodities, meanwhile destroying large coastal urban areas because of rising sea levels. Future historians may look back at our time and wonder why as well as how our world succumbed to isolating nationalism at a time when time was so short for cooperative intervention which is crucial for survival of a sustainable earth. Pride in language and culture is salubrious to individuals’ sense of history and identity. Excess nationalism that prevents international co-operation on harmful worldwide maladies is quite another. As Pope Francis has pointed out: For all of our connectivity due to expansion of social media, ability to communicate can breed contempt as well as mutual trust. “For all our hyper-connectivity,” said Francis, “We witnessed a fragmentation that made it more difficult to resolve problems that affect us all” (Horowitz, 2020, A-12). The pope’s encyclical, titled “Brothers All,” also said: “The forces of myopic, extremist, resentful, and aggressive nationalism are on the rise.” The pope’s document also advocates support for migrants, as well as resistance to nationalist and tribal populism. Francis broadened his critique to the role of market capitalism, as well as nationalism has failed the peoples of the world when they need co-operation and solidarity in the face of the world-wide corona virus pandemic. Humankind needs to unite into “a new sense of the human family [Fratelli Tutti, “Brothers All”], that rejects war at all costs” (Pope, 2020, 6-A). Our journey takes us first to Russia, with the able eye and honed expertise of Richard D. Anderson, Jr. who teaches as UCLA and publishes on the subject of his chapter: “Putin, Russian identity, and Russia’s conduct at home and abroad.” Readers should find Dr. Anderson’s analysis fascinating because Vladimir Putin, the singular leader of Russian foreign and domestic policy these days (and perhaps for the rest of his life, given how malleable Russia’s Constitution has become) may be a short man physically, but has high ambitions. One of these involves restoring the old Russian (and Soviet) empire, which would involve re-subjugating a number of nations that broke off as the old order dissolved about 30 years ago. President (shall we say czar?) Putin also has international ambitions, notably by destabilizing the United States, where election meddling has become a specialty. The sight of Putin and U.S. president Donald Trump, two very rich men (Putin $70-$200 billion; Trump $2.5 billion), nuzzling in friendship would probably set Thomas Jefferson and Vladimir Lenin spinning in their graves. The road of history can take some unanticipated twists and turns. Consider Poland, from which we have an expert native analysis in chapter 2, Bartosz Hlebowicz, who is a Polish anthropologist and journalist. His piece is titled “Lawless and Unjust: How to Quickly Make Your Own Country a Puppet State Run by a Group of Hoodlums – the Hopeless Case of Poland (2015–2020).” When I visited Poland to teach and lecture twice between 2006 and 2008, most people seemed to be walking on air induced by freedom to conduct their own affairs to an unusual degree for a state usually squeezed between nationalists in Germany and Russia. What did the Poles then do in a couple of decades? Read Hlebowicz’ chapter and decide. It certainly isn’t soft-bellied liberalism. In Chapter 3, with Bruce E. Johansen, we visit China’s western provinces, the lands of Tibet as well as the Uighurs and other Muslims in the Xinjiang region, who would most assuredly resent being characterized as being possessed by the Chinese of the Han to the east. As a student of Native American history, I had never before thought of the Tibetans and Uighurs as Native peoples struggling against the Independence-minded peoples of a land that is called an adjunct of China on most of our maps. The random act of sitting next to a young woman on an Air India flight out of Hyderabad, bound for New Delhi taught me that the Tibetans had something to share with the Lakota, the Iroquois, and hundreds of other Native American states and nations in North America. Active resistance to Chinese rule lasted into the mid-nineteenth century, and continues today in a subversive manner, even in song, as I learned in 2018 when I acted as a foreign adjudicator on a Ph.D. dissertation by a Tibetan student at the University of Madras (in what is now in a city called Chennai), in southwestern India on resistance in song during Tibet’s recent history. Tibet is one of very few places on Earth where a young dissident can get shot to death for singing a song that troubles China’s Quest for Lebensraum. The situation in Xinjiang region, where close to a million Muslims have been interned in “reeducation” camps surrounded with brick walls and barbed wire. They sing, too. Come with us and hear the music. Back to Europe now, in Chapter 4, to Portugal and Spain, we find a break in the general pattern of nationalism. Portugal has been more progressive governmentally than most. Spain varies from a liberal majority to military coups, a pattern which has been exported to Latin America. A situation such as this can make use of the term “populism” problematic, because general usage in our time usually ties the word into a right-wing connotative straightjacket. “Populism” can be used to describe progressive (left-wing) insurgencies as well. José Pinto, who is native to Portugal and also researches and writes in Spanish as well as English, in “Populism in Portugal and Spain: a Real Neighbourhood?” provides insight into these historical paradoxes. Hungary shares some historical inclinations with Poland (above). Both emerged from Soviet dominance in an air of developing freedom and multicultural diversity after the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union collapsed. Then, gradually at first, right wing-forces began to tighten up, stripping structures supporting popular freedom, from the courts, mass media, and other institutions. In Chapter 5, Bernard Tamas, in “From Youth Movement to Right-Liberal Wing Authoritarianism: The Rise of Fidesz and the Decline of Hungarian Democracy” puts the renewed growth of political and social repression into a context of worldwide nationalism. Tamas, an associate professor of political science at Valdosta State University, has been a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and a Fulbright scholar at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. His books include From Dissident to Party Politics: The Struggle for Democracy in Post-Communist Hungary (2007). Bear in mind that not everyone shares Orbán’s vision of what will make this nation great, again. On graffiti-covered walls in Budapest, Runes (traditional Hungarian script) has been found that read “Orbán is a motherfucker” (Mikanowski, 2019, 58). Also in Europe, in Chapter 6, Professor Ronan Le Coadic, of the University of Rennes, Rennes, France, in “Is There a Revival of French Nationalism?” Stating this title in the form of a question is quite appropriate because France’s nationalistic shift has built and ebbed several times during the last few decades. For a time after 2000, it came close to assuming the role of a substantial minority, only to ebb after that. In 2017, the candidate of the National Front reached the second round of the French presidential election. This was the second time this nationalist party reached the second round of the presidential election in the history of the Fifth Republic. In 2002, however, Jean-Marie Le Pen had only obtained 17.79% of the votes, while fifteen years later his daughter, Marine Le Pen, almost doubled her father's record, reaching 33.90% of the votes cast. Moreover, in the 2019 European elections, re-named Rassemblement National obtained the largest number of votes of all French political formations and can therefore boast of being "the leading party in France.” The brutality of oppressive nationalism may be expressed in personal relationships, such as child abuse. While Indonesia and Aotearoa [the Maoris’ name for New Zealand] hold very different ranks in the United Nations Human Development Programme assessments, where Indonesia is classified as a medium development country and Aotearoa New Zealand as a very high development country. In Chapter 7, “Domestic Violence Against Women in Indonesia and Aotearoa New Zealand: Making Sense of Differences and Similarities” co-authors, in Chapter 8, Mandy Morgan and Dr. Elli N. Hayati, from New Zealand and Indonesia respectively, found that despite their socio-economic differences, one in three women in each country experience physical or sexual intimate partner violence over their lifetime. In this chapter ther authors aim to deepen understandings of domestic violence through discussion of the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of theit countries to address domestic violence alongside studies of women’s attitudes to gender norms and experiences of intimate partner violence. One of the most surprising and upsetting scholarly journeys that a North American student may take involves Adolf Hitler’s comments on oppression of American Indians and Blacks as he imagined the construction of the Nazi state, a genesis of nationalism that is all but unknown in the United States of America, traced in this volume (Chapter 8) by co-editor Johansen. Beginning in Mein Kampf, during the 1920s, Hitler explicitly used the westward expansion of the United States across North America as a model and justification for Nazi conquest and anticipated colonization by Germans of what the Nazis called the “wild East” – the Slavic nations of Poland, the Baltic states, Ukraine, and Russia, most of which were under control of the Soviet Union. The Volga River (in Russia) was styled by Hitler as the Germans’ Mississippi, and covered wagons were readied for the German “manifest destiny” of imprisoning, eradicating, and replacing peoples the Nazis deemed inferior, all with direct references to events in North America during the previous century. At the same time, with no sense of contradiction, the Nazis partook of a long-standing German romanticism of Native Americans. One of Goebbels’ less propitious schemes was to confer honorary Aryan status on Native American tribes, in the hope that they would rise up against their oppressors. U.S. racial attitudes were “evidence [to the Nazis] that America was evolving in the right direction, despite its specious rhetoric about equality.” Ming Xie, originally from Beijing, in the People’s Republic of China, in Chapter 9, “News Coverage and Public Perceptions of the Social Credit System in China,” writes that The State Council of China in 2014 announced “that a nationwide social credit system would be established” in China. “Under this system, individuals, private companies, social organizations, and governmental agencies are assigned a score which will be calculated based on their trustworthiness and daily actions such as transaction history, professional conduct, obedience to law, corruption, tax evasion, and academic plagiarism.” The “nationalism” in this case is that of the state over the individual. China has 1.4 billion people; this system takes their measure for the purpose of state control. Once fully operational, control will be more subtle. People who are subject to it, through modern technology (most often smart phones) will prompt many people to self-censor. Orwell, modernized, might write: “Your smart phone is watching you.” Ming Xie holds two Ph.Ds, one in Public Administration from University of Nebraska at Omaha and another in Cultural Anthropology from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, where she also worked for more than 10 years at a national think tank in the same institution. While there she summarized news from non-Chinese sources for senior members of the Chinese Communist Party. Ming is presently an assistant professor at the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, West Texas A&M University. In Chapter 10, analyzing native peoples and nationhood, Barbara Alice Mann, Professor of Honours at the University of Toledo, in “Divide, et Impera: The Self-Genocide Game” details ways in which European-American invaders deprive the conquered of their sense of nationhood as part of a subjugation system that amounts to genocide, rubbing out their languages and cultures -- and ultimately forcing the native peoples to assimilate on their own, for survival in a culture that is foreign to them. Mann is one of Native American Studies’ most acute critics of conquests’ contradictions, and an author who retrieves Native history with a powerful sense of voice and purpose, having authored roughly a dozen books and numerous book chapters, among many other works, who has traveled around the world lecturing and publishing on many subjects. Nalanda Roy and S. Mae Pedron in Chapter 11, “Understanding the Face of Humanity: The Rohingya Genocide.” describe one of the largest forced migrations in the history of the human race, the removal of 700,000 to 800,000 Muslims from Buddhist Myanmar to Bangladesh, which itself is already one of the most crowded and impoverished nations on Earth. With about 150 million people packed into an area the size of Nebraska and Iowa (population less than a tenth that of Bangladesh, a country that is losing land steadily to rising sea levels and erosion of the Ganges river delta. The Rohingyas’ refugee camp has been squeezed onto a gigantic, eroding, muddy slope that contains nearly no vegetation. However, Bangladesh is majority Muslim, so while the Rohingya may starve, they won’t be shot to death by marauding armies. Both authors of this exquisite (and excruciating) account teach at Georgia Southern University in Savannah, Georgia, Roy as an associate professor of International Studies and Asian politics, and Pedron as a graduate student; Roy originally hails from very eastern India, close to both Myanmar and Bangladesh, so he has special insight into the context of one of the most brutal genocides of our time, or any other. This is our case describing the problems that nationalism has and will pose for the sustainability of the Earth as our little blue-and-green orb becomes more crowded over time. The old ways, in which national arguments often end in devastating wars, are obsolete, given that the Earth and all the people, plants, and other animals that it sustains are faced with the existential threat of a climate crisis that within two centuries, more or less, will flood large parts of coastal cities, and endanger many species of plants and animals. To survive, we must listen to the Earth, and observe her travails, because they are increasingly our own.

AbstractThe concept of surgical margins was born a long time ago but still lacks a univocal and sound understanding. The current biological rationale behind the recommendations on margins management relies on two pillars: (1) the observation that groups of cancer cells can leave the macroscopic tumor and disseminate throughout adjacent tissues with different degrees of aggressiveness; (2) the belief that removal of all (or most of) cancer cells can cure the patient. However, this background is undermined by some pieces of evidence. For instance, it has been proven that tissues surrounding cancer often bear precancerous traits, which means that cutting through non-cancerous tissues does not equate to cut through healthy tissues. The head and neck exquisitely poses a number of challenges in the achievement of negative margins, with special reference to anatomical complexity, high density in relevant structures, and unique histological heterogeneity of cancers. Currently, intraoperative margins evaluation relies on surgeons’ sight, palpation, ability to map tumor extension on imaging, and knowledge of anatomy, with some optical imaging technologies aiding the delineation of the mucosal margins of excision. Frozen sections are currently used to intraoperatively evaluate margins, yet with debate on whether and how this practice should be performed. Future perspectives on improvement of margins control are threefold: research is oriented towards refinements of understanding of cancers local progression, implementation of technologies to intraoperatively render tumor extension, and employment of optical imaging modalities capable of detecting foci of residual tumor in the surgical bed.

This chapter discusses the death sequences and murder set-pieces in the Friday the 13 th films to show how the combination of sound and editing work together to create perspective. First, the chapter looks at the idea of ‘unverified diegetic sound,’ which is a noise that comes from within the film (not from the score) where viewers do not see the source of the sound. Then, the chapter considers different approaches to using unverified diegetic sound with editing to show the killer’s perspective, the victim’s perspective, an omniscient perspective, and combinations of different perspectives within the death sequences.

This chapter shows how the creation of hidden pieces, such as umbilical cords and pieces of tail hair from herd animals, contained within the household chest, point to modalities of personhood, quite different to those objectified on the outer surface of the chest. Here, people are brought into being, not though repetition and stasis, but through their separation and movement across time and space.

At the end of the school year at the Paris Conservatory each class or studio held a contest. How a student did in the contests could determine whether or not he or she could continue in that class, advance to a higher class, or be dismissed. In the harmony contests, students would be unlikely to win any sort of prize if they could not reproduce the contrapuntal schemas suggested by patterns in the given basses or melodies. That is, a student was provided with just one of the four parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and required to complete the rest of the parts. The test typically lasted six hours, with the student shut in a room without any keyboard instrument. By being sensitive to the cues in the given voice, students could retrieve from their memories the other voices of the appropriate marches harmoniques. These were descendants of the movimenti (bass motions) taught in the Naples conservatories.

This introduction provides an overview of James Baldwin’s work in the 1980s and why it has been overlooked. Against the conventional narrative of Baldwin’s “decline,” a fresh look at his late work reveals a still-razor-sharp, provocative writer who, with the benefit of hindsight, holds up as one of the most prescient observers of the post-civil rights landscape. Indeed, while Baldwin is most often associated with earlier historical moments, he remained prolific in his final decade, publishing his most ambitious novel in 1979 (Just Above My Head), several noteworthy essays and articles (including landmark pieces such as “The Cross of Redemption,” “Notes on the House of Bondage,” “Freaks and the American Ideal of Manhood,” and “To Crush the Serpent”), a collection of poems in 1984 (Jimmy’s Blues), a major nonfiction book in 1985 (The Evidence of Things Not Seen), and arguably his best play (the as-yet unpublished The Welcome Table). In addition, he gave numerous illuminating interviews and speeches, narrated a documentary (I Heard It through the Grapevine), and even collaborated on a spoken-word-music album with jazz musician and composer David Linx (A Lover’s Question).

Animals played significant roles in Gall’s research program, in which he viewed humans as merely having more complex and better developed brains. Studying lowly animals, barnyard animals, wild animals, and pets helped reveal what makes us human, both behaviorally and with regard to brain development, while providing a natural backdrop on which life can be viewed on a continuum (i.e., a Great Chain of Being, albeit one devoid of supernatural entities). Gall even compared animals to humans with brain injuries and diseases. Further, he was an animal lover who always had pets around him, and he did not hesitate to mention how observing animals, including his pet dogs, birds, and monkeys, helped him discover particular faculties and their locations. He also did everything he could to encourage people to send him stories of exceptional animals and, ideally, their heads or skulls when they died. He did not, however, look favorably on brain lesion experiments with animals, railing against such mutilations as having so many problems that they could not convey clear and reliable information. Nonetheless, he did conduct a few experiments of his own to see if the findings of others, including Pierre Flourens, could be verified.

Religious wars hindered the initial efforts of Jean de Brétigny to establish a Discalced Carmelite convent in France. However, Pierre Bérulle, future confessor to the King and member of the reformist spiritual circle known as Paris dévot, favored the project. In October 1604, Ana Jesús founded and became prioress of the first Discalced Carmelite convent in Paris. When Bérulle decided to establish a second convent in Pontoise, he chose Ana de San Bartolomé to head it. In order to comply, Ana, a white-veiled nun (one who did menial labor), would have to take the black veil. Despite the opposition of Ana de Jesús, Ana de San Bartolomé acceded to Bérulle’s demands and founded in Pontoise.

Concentrated solar power produces electricity by using a mirror to focus sunlight on a fluid filled tube known as a heat collection element. The fluid inside the element is then used as a heat source for steam generation in a conventional steam turbine power plant. It is possible that adding microstructures to the surface of the conventionally smooth heat collection element could improve system efficiency, motivating the need for an improved understanding of the radiation characteristics of a microstructured surface. The goal of this work was to experimentally determine the impact of different microscale geometries on net radiative heat gain when angle of incidence was varied. Five test pieces, one with a smooth surface and four with microstructured surfaces were compared experimentally for a given infrared energy input and flow rate and five different angles of incidence. Over the entire range of angles the microstructured test pieces absorbed more energy than the smooth test piece.

The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) offers a great potential for recovering waste heat and using low-temperature sources for power generation. However, the ORC thermal efficiency is limited by the relatively low temperature level, and, therefore, designing ORC components with high efficiencies and minimized losses is of major importance. Such an approach requires the use of a specially designed closed cascade wind tunnel. This contribution presents the design of the contraction zone shape. The ideal shape can be defined by a sixth order polynomial yielding a smooth curve for the nozzle profile. Due to pressure vessel costs, it is not possible to realize the whole contraction zone as one piece for this wind tunnel. Instead, a piece-wise conical design approach is chosen. Classical nozzle design guidelines do not offer an analytical solution to this flow problem. Therefore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in combination with Stratford’s separation criterion is used for an optimization study of a piece-wise conical contraction zone. Different combination of numbers of components, length, and inflection points are investigated. The optimization minimizes the flow deviation of the chosen profile to the optimal shape in two steps: a geometrical approach to the optimal shape and an optimization of the flow field within the contraction zone. The geometrical optimization yields a profile with minor deviation to the ideal shape. For the flow field optimization, a CFD analysis is used to minimize flow separations at the break points between the single conical pieces, especially those at the far end of the contraction zone. All shapes are investigated by Stratford’s separation criterion, which is adopted to conical pieces. The presented analysis indicates that the flow field optimization yields a much better approach for the fluid dynamics of the wind tunnel than the geometrical approach.

In this paper, some experiments are described which were designed to illustrate the dynamical behaviour of towed flexible cylinders and to test the theory. A silicone rubber cylinder was manufactured such that it was almost neutrally buoyant when immersed in water. The cylinder was terminated by plexiglas end-pieces and was held in horizontal water flow by a length of nylon thread (towrope). Video capturing along with image processing techniques were used to measure the transverse displacement of the cylinder in the horizontal plane. For the cylinder with relatively streamlined nose and tail end-pieces, non-flexural (rigid-body), as well as flexural instabilities developed as the flow velocity was increased; using a sufficiently blunt tail end-piece significantly stabilized the system, while shortening the towrope was not very effective for stabilizing the system. The experimental observations are generally in qualitative agreement with the nonlinear theory. Quantitative comparison of various quantities, e.g. the instability thresholds, between experiment and theory, based on the estimated values of some of the theoretical nondimensional parameters, is also fairly good.

Louvered fins are used in compact heat exchangers to increase heat transfer by interrupting thermal boundary layer growth thereby increasing the convective heat transfer coefficients and reducing the air side resistance. Recently, it has been experimentally shown that heat transfer along the tube wall can be augmented by the placement of delta winglets on the louvers at an angle to the flow. The focus of this combined experimental and computational study is to determine the effect of realistic winglets on tube wall heat transfer. Comparisons of the computational simulations were made to the experimental results, which were obtained using a twenty times scaled model. Winglet performance characteristics were studied on solid louvers and pierced louvers whereby the latter simulates what would occur for a manufactured louver having a winglet. For a solid louver having a winglet, the tube wall heat transfer augmentation was found to be as high as 5.4%. Pierced louver cases were observed to produce slightly higher heat transfer augmentations than solid louver cases. Computational results suggest that the mechanism behind tube wall heat transfer augmentation is flow redirection and not winglet induced vortices.

Transverse defects in the head of rail are the cause for many repair plug insertions and can lead to potential train stoppage if not repaired in a timely manner. In 2009, 76 train derailments were attributed to transverse head defects progressing to fracture in the rail. This phenomenon has been associated with the high axle loads found in mainly North American and heavy haul markets. Market trends are for increasing axle loads which may increase the occurrence of head defects. An efficient, high-performance repair for this defect has been sought for many years. For a truly effective repair, the loss of service time must be minimized to maintain cost effectiveness and the repair must perform as close to parent metal rail as possible. In early 2009 EWI and Holland entered into a joint development program to develop a repair for transverse defects in the rail head. Gas Metal Arc Welding, Resistance Brazing and flash butt welding with a wedge geometry piece were examined as methods for the repair. The flash butt welding process appeared most viable and is already associated with high-quality rail butt joints. The benefits of flash butt wedge welding include no rail cutting or removal, rapid on track repair time within 30–45 minutes, and the ability to modify the process using the computer-controlled flash butt welding system to accommodate different rail wear conditions. Additionally, cooling rates of the weld can be controlled such that the weld and heat-affected zone (HAZ) performance closely match the base metal. Special tooling and processing parameters were developed to use flash butt welding to place a wedge-shaped piece of matching rail material into a slot cut in the rail replacing the compromised area with matching rail material. Hardness testing, bend testing, and fatigue testing of joints produced with the final process all met AREMA performance objectives. Residual stress measurements of the weld showed a tendency for residual compressive stress in the rail head, although the level of residual stress was low. Currently, the first-generation welder with automated flash-removal equipment is being deployed in the field. Results of the qualification/performance tests show these welds perform very similarly to flash butt welds currently in rail. The use of this process is expected to enable railroads to quickly repair head defects in a more efficient manner.

As the accident of a vessel impacting a bridge pier will result in serious disaster, such as bridge fall, ship sink and polluting environment, the technology and method have been investigated to prevent and protect bridges from vessel collisions. An adaptive arresting net crashworthy device has been developed for protecting non-navigable channel piers against ship collisions, which consists of mooring floating boats, mooring cable and mooring anchors, adaptive floating buckets, arresting net, triggering wire rope and constant resistant force cables. When a ship impacts the adaptive arresting net crashworthy device, first the head of the adaptive floating buckets will rise due to the floating force, then the arresting net fixed on the adaptive floating buckets captures and stops the ship. Enormous kinetic energy is consumed by a series of resistant force cables failure. The present paper presents the ship collision tests at full scale and hydrodynamic analysis of the adaptive arresting net crashworthy device. The ship collision tests has been conducted 6 times by a 1200DWT ship with different speed. The ship are prevented successfully. By using multi-body dynamics and rope dynamic theory, simulation model of the adaptive arresting net crashworthy device is established by hydrodynamic analysis software ANSYS-AQWA. It is found that the numerical simulation results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.

The FA3 RPV heads segregation has been an important issue for the Flamanville 3 EPR project. A high carbon content of carbon has been measured at the outer central part of the two heads. Manufactured in 2006 according to the RCC-M requirements, these pieces were also submitted to the ESPN (i.e. nuclear pressurized equipment) French order requirements, and in particular the ESPN technical qualification. This paper presents the manufacturing of these heads to explain the origin of the segregation and place this process in its context, with in particular a clarification of the technical qualification requirements in 2011, which are different to the RCC-M qualification process. This qualification required additional chemical and mechanical characterizations in the segregated area of the representative vessel head. The additional Charpy-V test did not meet the 60 J requirement of the ESPN order and led to the large testing program to characterize the toughness properties of the segregated material.

In this experimental investigation two novel heat sink designs that employ different flow phenomena for enhanced heat transfer are presented. Thermal and hydrodynamic performance comparisons are made for three foam heat sinks with and without fins and two heat sinks with zero-mean curvature based on the Schwarz minimal surface design. Results for a longitudinally-finned heat sink are presented as a baseline comparison against the complex foam and Schwarz “3D” heat sink designs. The heat sinks are manufactured using an investment casting process providing a means of fabricating complex designs as one monolithic piece with high thermal conductivity that would not be possible using traditional techniques. It is demonstrated that against pumping power and velocity parameters the foam structures perform reasonably well in the higher velocity range. It is shown that the pressure drop across the foam and Schwarz structures is significant and the application of these designs in real systems will depend on the design constraints of the system, e.g. the foams may work well in a fan mounted heat sink assembly but not in a typical telecommunications application where flow bypass is important.

Almost all technical devices in use today are assemblies of individual pieces. For all force-based assembly methods, such as bolting or press-fitting, the thermal behavior is influenced by the contact resistance at the joint surface. For metal pieces in contact with each other, the authors have developed a measurement method and analysis tools enabling the determination of the contact heat transfer coefficient. Previously published results [1, 2, 3] have shown the dependence of the contact heat transfer coefficient on surface structure, contact pressure and material properties. The present work provides experimental and analytical data for the contact heat transfer coefficient and also proposes a model for calculating the real contact area of two surfaces which are placed under different contact pressures. Experiments were conducted for two material combinations with three different surface structures, while varying the contact pressures from 7 MPa to 230 MPa. When selecting average surface roughness (Rz) as a characterizing parameter for surface structure, the results did not show a consistent trend. Thus, in this paper Rz was replaced by the real contact area between the two surfaces of interest. This area was determined by applying a refined method based on surface roughness measurements. The experimental data show a better consistency, when plotting the contact heat transfer coefficient relative to real contact area (Fk) rather than the previously used Rz–values.

The advancements in fabricating and utilizing microchannel heat sinks (MCHS) for cooling of electronic devices during the last decade has not been matched by corresponding advances in our fundamental understanding of the unconventional micro fluidics. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been reported for the heat transfer analysis along the direction of flow within the microchannels, but to the best knowledge of the authors, the effect of the size of the inlet and outlet plenum and direction of the flow to the plenums was not studied exhaustively till date. The liquid is supplied to the microchannels via the inlet and outlet plenums and this can be achieved by many flow arrangements. Due to the small size of the channel dimensions, the entrance and exit conditions will significantly affect the heat transfer characteristics of the flow field in the channel. Instability effects at the entrance and exit regions of the micro-channel also need to be fully understood for efficient design of microchannel heat sinks. This paper presents an experimental study that has been conducted to explore the effect of entrance & exit conditions of the liquid flow within a copper micro-channel heat sink (MCHS). Three test pieces having inlet & outlet plenum dimensions of 8mm × 30mm, 10mm × 30 mm and 12 mm × 30 mm each with constant depth of 2.5 mm have been selected. Three different flow arrangements (U-Type, S-type and P-type) are studied for each test piece resulting in total nine flow arrangements. Each micro-channel heat sink contains an array of micro-channels in parallel having individual width of 330μm and channel depth of 2.5 mm. A comparison is made based on thermohydraulic performance of MCHS for different flow conditions at inlet and outlet plenums maintaining constant heat flux. Deionised water has been used in the experiments for the Reynolds number ranging from approximately 220 to 1100. The results are interpreted based on pressure drops and maximum temperature variations for these nine flow arrangements. Tests has been conducted to look for optimized dimensions and flow conditions at inlet and outlet plenums for the given fixed length of microchannels under same conjugate heat transfer conditions. Evaluations of experimental uncertainties have been meticulously made while selecting the instruments used in the experimental facility.

Short-term rentals mediated by digital platforms have positive and negative impacts that are unevenly distributed among socio-economic groups and places. Detrimental impacts on the housing market and quality of life of long-term residents have been particular contentious in some cities. • In the 12 cities studied in the report (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Prague, Rome and Vienna), city governments have responded differently to the growth of short-term rentals. • The emerging local regulations of short-term rentals take multiple forms and exhibit various degrees of stringency, ranging from rare cases of laissez-faire to a few cases of partial prohibition or strict quantitative control. Most city governments have sought to find a middle-ground approach that differentiates between the professional rental of whole units and the occasional rental of one’s home/ primary residence. • The regulation of short-term rentals is contentious and highly politicised. Six broad categories of interest groups and non-state actors actively participate in the debates with contrasting positions: advocates of the ‘sharing’ or ‘collaborative’ economy; corporate platforms; professional organisatons of short-term rental operators; new associations of hosts or ‘home-sharers’; the hotel and hospitality industry; and residents’ associations/citizens’ movements. • All city governments face difficulties in implementing and enforcing the regulations, due to a lack of sufficient resources and to the absence of accurate and comprehensive data on individual hosts. That data is held by corporate platforms, which have generally not accepted to release it (with a few exceptions) nor to monitor the content of their listings against local rules. • The relationships between platforms and city governments have oscillated between collaboration and conflict. Effective implementation is impossible without the cooperation of platforms. • In the context of the European Union, the debate has taken a supranational dimension, as two pieces of EU law frame the possibility — and acceptable forms — of regulation of online platforms and of short-term rentals in EU member states: the 2000 E-Commerce Directive and the 2006 Services Directive. • For regulation to be effective, the EU legal framework should be revised to ensure platform account- ability and data disclosure. This would allow city (and other ti ers of) governments to effectively enforce the regulations that they deem appropriate. • Besides, national and regional governments, who often control the legislative framework that defines particular types of short-term rentals, need to give local governments the necessary tools to be able to exercise their ‘right to regulate’ in the name of public interest objectives.
