Hydro-joining is composed of hydro-piercing, hole flanging and nut-inlaying processes. In this study, a new hydro-flanging process combining hydro-piercing and hydro-flanging is proposed. An internal pressured fluid is used as the supporting medium instead of a rigid die. Three kinds of punch head shapes are designed to explore the thickness distribution of the flanged tube and the fluid leakage effects between the punch head and the flanged tube in the hydro-flanging process. A finite element code DEFORM 3D is used to simulate the tube material deformation behavior and to investigate the formability of the hydro-flanging processes of aluminum alloy tubes. The effects of various forming parameters, such as punch shapes, internal pressure, die hole diameter, etc., on the hydro-flanged tube thickness distributions are discussed. Hydro-flanging experiments are also carried out. The die hole radius is designed to make the maximum internal forming pressure needed smaller than 70 MPa, so that a general hydraulic power unit can be used to implement the proposed hole flanging experiments. The flanged thickness distributions are compared with simulation results to verify the validity of the proposed models and the designed punch head shapes.

The aim of the present study is to verify the knowledge of risks and complications of oral piercings, and to observe the main complications associated with piercings, using a sample from central Italy of patients wearing intraoral piercings. Through piercing and tattoo studios selected randomly in Rome, Latina and Campobasso, and a tattoo and piercing convention in Latina, a group of 387 individuals with oral piercings were selected and asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire. After filling in questionnaires, 70 individuals of the 387 selected agreed to be visited to allow the observation of the integrity of their teeth and gums (especially close to the oral piercing), oral hygiene conditions, piercing cleaning, bad habits and gingival recession. Among the respondents, 46.8% said they had not been informed about these risks, 48.5% claimed not to clean the piercing, 70.6% stated that they had not been made aware of gingival problems that can arise, 60.4% subjects stated that they were not informed about the complications of piercings concerning teeth, 52.8% had insufficient oral hygiene conditions, 42% showed signs of generalised gingivitis, 20% had 3–4 mm recessions and 22% had tooth fracture(s) due to piercing. From this study, it emerged that oral piercings can represent a risk to oral health and that there is a widespread lack of awareness of the complications and correct methods of maintaining oral piercings. Periodic checks by both dentists and dental hygienists, for patients with oral piercings, could play a decisive role in preventing, intercepting and treating the complications that they can cause.

Abstract Aim The aims of this review of the literature are to offer further insights into possible problems related to tongue piercing and present three case reports showing undesired effects of tongue piercing. Background From a dental perspective, oral piercings and especially tongue piercings are not a harmless fashion trend since they can be associated with local and systemic risks and complications. A search of the literature was conducted to investigate the documentation of health risks associated with tongue piercing using the MEDLINE database as well as the German literature. Review Results The literature contains numerous case reports, a limited number of studies, and a review describing a wide variety of complications, especially in patients who have undergone tongue piercing. In the majority of cases, the piercing of the tongue is performed in the midline. Piercings are made of different materials, usually metal or synthetic materials. Complications during piercing, immediately following piercing, as well as long term were found. Conclusions The three cases presented here demonstrate some of those adverse effects. The most commonly described oral complication is the damage of teeth and the periodontium caused by tongue piercings. Tongue piercing is a personal decision, but it is important that patients are fully aware of possible oral health hazards. Clinical Significance Patients need better information on the potential complications associated with tongue piercing. Dental practitioners should educate patients about potential side effects and possible oral, dental, and systemic complications. Citation Ziebolz D, Stuehmer C, van Nüss K, Hornecke E, Mausberg RF. During manufacturing nuts of increased height, a problem of obtaining correct cylindrical form of the hole for thread and overall geometrical parameters arises. To solve the problem it is necessary to know regularity of the blank forming process. Results of the study of a technological process of high hexahedral nuts forming presented. The nuts were M18 of 22 mm height, M16 of 19 mm height and M12 of normal height 10 mm according to GOST 5915–70, accuracy class B, steel grade 10 according to GOST 10702–78. The volumetric stamping was accomplished at the five-position automatic presses of АА1822 type. It was determined, that unevenness of the metal flow in the process of plastic deformation of blanks of increased height nuts was caused by different stress conditions by their sections. To simulate the mode of deformation, the program complex QForm-3D was chosen. The complex ensured to forecast with necessary accuracy the metal flow in a blank, as well as to define the deformation force and arising stress in the working instrument. The simulation showed the presence of regularity between preliminary formed buffle and deviation of dimensions and form of a blank wall after its finishing piercing, which can be expressed by a nonlinear dependence. The limit values of the relative height of the buffle С/D = 0.56–0.588 defined, exceeding which will result in rejection of the finished product. Accounting the limit values of the relative height of the buffle will enable to correct a mode of technological operations and technological instruments at stamping of high hexahedral nuts.

The loading and the failure mode of metal hexagon bolt joints and metal counter-sunk bolt joints of C/C composites were investigated. The joints were tested for out-of-plane loading at two temperatures (600 °C and 800 °C). The failure morphology of a lap plate was investigated, and the main failure modes were determined. The typical load–displacement curve was characterized and the test was simulated using ABAQUS non-linear finite element software. Furthermore, progressive damage was induced, and comparison of the finite element simulation with the experimental data revealed that the failures mainly occurred in the lower lap plate and were dominated by cracking and delamination of the matrix, accompanied by the pull-out of a small number of piercing fibers. Finally, the influences of the temperature, nut radius, and fixture geometry on the critical load were determined via simulation.

SummaryOral/perioral piercing may provide an ideal environment for adhesion and colonization of microorganisms. The aim of this study is to perform an “in vitro” research on the capabilities of adhesion of Candida albicans on oral piercings made of plastic and metal. Acrylic and metal piercings were incubated with Candida albicans and then were observed using scanning electron microscopy under different magnifications. A lot of irregularities and roughness were observed on the surface of the plastic piercing unlike the surface of the metal one, which is not so rough. Nevertheless, the number of Candida albicans colonies was considerably larger on the scanned metal surface in comparison to the plastic surface. In vitro the metal surface of the piercing creates better environment for the adhesion and colonization of microorganisms than the acrylic. This could be attributed to the electrostatic forces that most likely attract Candida albicans to the metal piercing in the early stages of biofilm formation.

The prevalence of genital piercing among women is increasing. As the popularity increases, the number of complications from infection, injury, and retained jewelry is likely to rise. Techniques to remove embedded jewelry are not well described in the literature. The purpose of this report was to describe a case of a patient with a retained clitoral glans piercing, discuss a simple technique for outpatient removal, and review current evidence regarding associated risks of clitoral piercings. A 24-year-old female presented to the emergency department with an embedded clitoral glans piercing. Local anesthetic was injected into the periclitoral skin and a small superficial vertical incision was made to remove the ball of the retained barbell safely. In conclusion, among patients with retained genital piercing, outpatient removal of embedded jewelry is feasible. While the practice of female genital piercing is not regulated, piercing of the glans of the clitoris is associated with increased injury to the nerves and blood supply of the clitoris structures leading to future fibrosis and diminished function compared to piercing of the clitoral hood.

In 2003 and 2004, leaves and young fruits of cashew nut plants showing an undescribed disease symptom were observed on plants of an early-dwarf clone in a commercial orchard in Ceará and Piauí states in northeastern Brazil. Initial symptoms consisted of angular, water-soaked, dark-to-black spots on the leaf and at the mid-rib vein surrounding the leaf veins. Eventually, lesions also extended from the mid-rib to the secondary veins, delineating the vein system of the leaf. In young, green fruits, symptoms were large, dark, oily spots surrounded by conspicuous water-soaked areas. A yellow-pigmented colony was consistently recovered from the lesions on nutrient yeast-extract dextrose agar medium (3 g of meat extract, 5 g of peptone, 10 g of dextrose, 5 g of yeast extract, and 18 g of agar per liter). Physiological tests revealed colonies that were gram negative, strictly aerobic, oxidase negative, catalase positive, lacking fluorescent pigmentation on King's B medium, urea hydrolase negative, and able to grow on yeast dextrose calcium carbonate medium yielding yellow colonies. These tests indicated that the bacterium belonged to the genus Xanthomonas. PCR amplification of bacterial DNA using RST2 (1) and Xcv3R (3) primers resulted in identical band patterns to mango isolates Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR-amplified products of six isolates of X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae was conducted with HaeIII and showed different profile patterns on agarose gel, indicating genetic variability among these isolates. Pathogenicity was demonstrated by gently piercing and misting cashew leaves with a bacterial suspension adjusted to 106 CFU/ml. Inoculated plants were enclosed in plastic bags for 24 h and then incubated in a greenhouse (29 ± 1°C). Control plants were misted with sterile water and treated the same way. After 8 days, foliar symptoms similar to those observed in the field developed on all inoculated plants, and reisolated bacteria were characterized and found to be X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae. Control plants remained symptomless. To our knowledge, this is the first description of commercially grown cashew plants as host to X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae in Brazil. This disease may pose a serious problem to the cashew-growing industry in Brazil. This bacterial pathogen has been reported on mangoes (Mangifera indica) and cashew in India (2) under the former name of Pseudomonas mangiferae-indicae. References: (1) R. P. Leite, Jr. et al. Appl. Numerous studies have found that piercing and tattooing the body is an increasingly prevalent trend in modern popular culture; however, this is not only a modern practice. Evidence of various forms of body ornamentation has been found in human societies dating back thousands of years. Although prior research has focused on the potential relationships between various personality traits and the likelihood of piercing or tattooing the body, few have approached this topic from an evolutionary perspective. For instance, the general motivations for getting tattoos and piercings have tended to fall into the same three categories for hundreds of years: (a) a symbol of an important past event, love, or friendship, (b) group membership, and/or (c) a marker of individuality. We argue that these motivations are simply proximate behaviors for an ultimate evolutionary reason: the perpetuation of one's genes. In this article, we propose two new theories about the origins of body ornamentation. First, in our “human canvas” hypothesis, we propose a link between body ornamentation and the human species' historical use of symbolic thought. Second, in our “upping the ante” hypothesis, we suggest that the steady rise in popularity of tattooing and piercing in Western culture has come about due to larger population densities and advancements in healthcare, which has led individuals to seek new and unique displays of fitness (i.e., body ornamentation). We then conclude with proximate examples in popular culture to display the proposed ultimate evolutionary reasoning behind body ornamentation.

The motives, family experiences, and personality characteristics of 341 college students with and without tattoos or piercings were studied. Participants completed Lippa's 1991 measures of the Big Five personality factors, a shortened version of the Body Cathexis Scale, a series of questions about their childhood experiences, and questions about risk-taking behaviors. In addition, reasons to have or not have body modifications and the perceptions of people with body modifications were investigated. Of the 116 men and 186 women, 25% and 33%, respectively, had at least one tattoo or body piercing. There were very few differences in the childhood experiences or personality characteristics of people with or without body modifications. Although people with body modifications did not differ from people without modifications on the Big Five personality measures, people without modifications perceived people with modifications as much different from themselves on these measures. These results indicate that tattoos and piercings in college students are associated with significantly more risk-taking behavior, greater use of alcohol and marijuana, and less social conformity. However, the traditional stereotype that body modifications are indicators of social or personal pathology does not describe contemporary college students.

In today's car industries, low investment costs and high production rates are sought. By using nut piercing in the stamping dies in the manufacture of body components, otherwise necessary subsequent tempos can be reduced. The goal of the work was to implement nut piercing from below in a reference die to be able to use this type of operation in future projects. The main problem when implementing nut piercing from below is to be able to handle and evacuate the scrap piece that remains after the punching. By studying the equipment in the reference die, a deeper understanding of the process could be obtained, at the same time as information and necessary material were collected by expertise and the case company's suppliers for nut piercing. The recommendation to the case company provides a solution proposal for scrap evacuation as well as the components involved to be able to carry out the operation.

Groups of companies are common. The empirical data are heterogeneous. Agency problems arise between the controlling shareholder and the minority shareholders and between the shareholders and the creditors. Three regulatory models exist: regulation by general corporate and/or civil law (prototype: the UK); regulation by special group law (prototype: Germany); and regulation by areas of the law such as banking, competition, and tax. The main strategy is mandatory disclosure and group accounting. Related party transactions (including conflict of interest and tunneling) are dealt with by disclosure and consent requirements. In addition, appropriate standards for directors and controlling shareholders (corporate governance) have been developed. They become stricter, if insolvency is approaching. The concept of the shadow director extends liability to the controlling shareholder. Other mechanisms for creditor protection are indemnification, veil-piercing, subordination and substantive consolidation. A fair amount of international convergence exists as to shareholder protection, but not as to creditor protection.

Titles in the Core Text series take the reader straight to the heart of the subject, providing focused, concise, and reliable guides for students at all levels. This chapter discusses ‘lifting the veil’, a phrase that refers to situations where the judiciary or the legislature have decided that the separation of corporate personality from the members must not be maintained. In this case, the veil of incorporation is said to be lifted. ‘Lifting’ is also known as ‘peeping’, ‘penetrating’, ‘piercing’, or ‘parting’. The chapter presents statutory examples of veil lifting, many of which involve corporate group structures and others involve straightforward shareholder limitation of liability issues. It also considers cases of veil lifting by the courts as well as classical veil lifting during the periods of 1897 to 1966, 1966 to 1989, and 1989 to the present. Three cases are highlighted: Adams v Cape Industries (1990), Chandler v Cape Plc (2012), and Prest v Petrodel Industries Ltd (2013). The chapter also examines claims of tortious liability, the liability of a parent company for personal injury, and commercial tort. Finally, it looks at the costs and benefits of limited liability.

The literature of the Italian Due- and Trecento frequently calls into play the figure of a woman reader. From Guittone d’Arezzo’s piercing critic, the ‘villainous woman’, to the mysterious Lady who bids Guido Cavalcanti to write his grand philosophical song, to Dante’s female co-editors in the Vita Nova and his great characters of female readers, such as Francesca and Beatrice in the Comedy, all the way to Boccaccio’s overtly female audience, this particular sort of interlocutor appears to be central to the construct of textuality and the construction of literary authority in these times. The aim of this book is to shed light on this figure by contextualizing her within the history of female literacy, the material culture of the book, and the ways in which writers and poets of earlier traditions (in particular Occitan and French) imagined her. Its argument is that these figures of women readers are not mere veneers between a male author and a ‘real’ male readership, but that, although fictional, they bring several advantages to their vernacular authors, such as orality, the mother tongue, the recollection of the delights of early education, literality, freedom in interpretation, absence of teleology, the beauties of ornamentation and amplification, a reduced preoccupation with the fixity of the text, the pleasure of making mistakes, dialogue with the other, the extension of desire, original simplicity, and new and more flexible forms of authority.

Over the past few years, the US, Canada, and the EU have incorporated ‘transparency’ provisions into their investment treaties. Arbitration under those treaties thus will not be confidential, regardless of the arbitral rules governing them. By contrast, Russia’s 2016 regulation for the negotiation of investment treaties expressly provides for confidentiality of arbitration, including the award, unless both parties consent in writing to disclose information. This chapter traces the development of public disclosure and participation in investment arbitration. It is divided into three sections: public access to arbitral documents, third-party written submissions, and public access to arbitration hearings. Each section addresses developments under NAFTA Chapter 11, the evolution of the practice under the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Dispute (ICSID) Arbitration Rules, the approach taken by the new UNCITRAL Rules on Transparency, the status of other arbitration rules, and the practice of certain States as shown in their recent agreements.

AbstractWhile on the international plane Germany has as strong a position as one could wish for, a second appeal to the ICJ does not seem advisable. Though not formally estopped from challenging Sentenza 238/2014, Germany would at least face a principled contradiction (Wertungswiderspruch). Like Italy, Germany takes the position that international obligations must be disregarded should they be found incompatible with fundamental rights enshrined in the national constitution. Concerning the underlying conflict, another formally strong German position proves to have inherent shortcomings. To argue that, as far as Italian citizens are concerned, all matters of compensation had been dealt with comprehensively in the German–Italian lump sum agreement of 1961 carries some conviction. However, the limitations of that agreement, the erosion of the individual’s strict mediatisation in international law, and recent German compensation schemes for other victims of World War II (WWII) have fuelled a growing discontent with this final settlement. Having been doubly denied recognition as victims by the injustices of non-retroactivity and of differentiation, the Italian WWII victims ‘in oblivion’ have pursued compensation claims for over a decade now. It would go too far to argue an individual claim for financial compensation under international law for historic wrongs. The principle of intertemporal law, however, has its merits as well as its defects. This chapter argues in favour of mildly piercing the veil of intertemporality by reliance on fundamental ethical principles as part of the law in force already at the time of the original violation. A breach in this kind of obligation should give rise to an obligatio de negotiando under the principle of just satisfaction. Such a legal construction takes up the idea that in most of the recent cases of ‘history taken to court’, compensation is but a secondary aim, the primary aim being to ‘tell one’s own story’ as a counter-narrative to hegemonic discourse. By entering into negotiations with the victims ‘in oblivion’, Germany—and Italy—could and should attempt to finally solve what has been and remains a fundamentally unjust situation.

This chapter reviews the strict separation that exists in Japan between professional and amateur Noh performers and how this boundary translates overseas through the collaborative works of Theatre Nohgaku and professional Noh performers. It demonstrates how the traditions of musical style and usage reign over contemporary Noh composition and performance practice. It also talks about Nohkan music in contemporary Noh dramas that does not deviate from traditional forms, content, and usage in any remarkable way. The chapter exhibits the Nohkan music performer's imagination and inspiration within the confines of prescribed patterns, which indicates that the Noh structure still affords a degree of artistic license and innovation. It reviews contemporary Noh plays, both in Japanese and in other languages, that cover varied subject matters.

Shidyaq wrote in an era when capitalism had already made its way into the Ottoman Empire. Scribal work was already an inheritance to be refused, the discourse of the master was in recession and the crumbling symbolic order presented itself at every corner: in the home, where cultural practices of generosity impoverished his family; and most importantly in the traditional schools (kuttab), where learning grammar washarder than ‘scratching your own balls’.Rejecting the impotent work of scribes and grammarians, Shidyaq invoked metaphors of ejaculation to describe his version of linguisteriks. The writing of his pen is described as a ‘cut’ (shiq al-qalam): an incision into the symbolic sphere, from which a sense of pleasure is derived,2 yet one that does not satisfy. Instead of the rampant seraglio, the paradise of pure enjoyment, the liberalising sphere of empire is experienced as a zone of impotence, a place in which pleasure can no longer be derived from coitus, if it ever has been.

We must at least consider the possibility that Eudora Welty’s African American characters are not just secret agents, oblique, liminal, spiritual, ironic, or even mysterious, as we might once have believed. While elements of each of these choices exist in Welty’s textual universe, we also have clear evidence of much less mediated African American rage, power, and artistic dominance. With howls (Exum, Powerhouse), pumped fists and knives (Man Son, Root M’Hook and others), icepicks (Ruby and Dove) piercing screams (Delilah), and banging pots (Luella), African American personae express an unsettling lexicon of narrative punctures that question conventional notions of plot and character development.

It is a truism that crime is a reality constructed by those interests powerful enough to create the definitions of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. This chapter reminds us that mental illness is constructed in the same way and by those same interests. It should serve as no surprise, then, that those diagnosed as mentally ill are far more likely to go to jail or prison than to be consigned to a clinic, hospital, or asylum. In this chapter the causes for criminalizing abnormal behaviour are located not in the organic or medical realm but in the realm of social injustice and the persecution of the prophetic. Thus, prison has become in many respects the new sacred space for those with a piercing, and hence unwelcome, social vision.

This chapter considers the Ethiopica’s piercing reflections on narrative mimesis that can be found in the responses to embedded narrations and other passages. The Ethiopica certainly emphasize the capacity of narrative to enwrap the audience, but at the same time they do not fail to mark the limits to immersion. As parallels in ekphrastic literature and the theory of rhetoric indicate, this play with immersion and reflection bespeaks a broader sensitivity to the complex nature of aesthetic experience in the Imperial Age. Heliodorus also draws our attention to the different perspectives of readers and characters no matter how experiential the narrative is. Embedded audiences highlight the dynamics of narrative economy which privileges readers over characters. Moving from reception to the medium of narrative, one finds implicit reflections on the ontological and epistemological gap between words and the world they represent. The chapter yields the conclusion that Heliodorus artfully entwines immersion and reflection, therefore ironically providing a corrective to the post-structuralist assumptions that have guided some of the most fruitful explorations of the Ethiopica.

Three cases are highlighted: Adams v Cape Industries (1990), Chandler v Cape Plc (2012), and Prest v Petrodel Industries Ltd (2013) as well as important recent case development. The chapter also examines claims of tortious liability, the liability of a parent company for personal injury, and commercial tort. Finally, it looks at the costs and benefits of limited liability.

Abstract This project investigates a cantilevered cylinder projecting down into the water column moving at high velocity through still water, as is applicable to submarine masts. Surface-piercing cylinders differ from fully submerged cylinders due to the generation of surface wakes and under increasing flow speeds the formation of a ventilated pocket in the lee of the cylinder, both of which grow with increasing velocity, with concomitant effects on the hydrodynamic loading. The relative length of submergence, or immersed aspect ratio (L/D) and end conditions of the cylinder with respect to tip vortex drag effects may also impact the hydrodynamic loads and wake formation. Laboratory testing of surface-piercing cylinders to date has predominantly been confined to characterising the wakes shed from a rigid cylinder cantilevered down into the water from a towing tank carriage, which under certain test conditions will also exhibit significant Vortex-Induced-Vibration (VIV), though not adequately identified and accounted for in its magnification of drag and wake.

A simulation model for planing-hull watercraft propulsion consisting of a 3ph induction motor as prime mover, direct shaft drive, surface piercing propeller as thruster and speed controller was developed, tested, and operated demonstrating the ability to analyze the entire system numerically. The modularity of the model allows for the user to easily substitute different or more advanced modules, or add additional ones to obtain greater level of detail or simulate more complex interactions. Trends indicate an interest in all electric ship design as well as the use of surface piercing propellers for small craft. All-electric drive plants offer distinct advantages due to their flexibility in arrangements, ability to eliminate reduction gears in many cases, and wide range of available sizes. Of particular interest is the ability to apply electric drive to small craft with planing-hull, which achieve significantly higher velocities and where arrangements and maneuverability are of high concern. The accurate control of speed combined with the ability to output fairly constant torque across a wide range of speeds allows application of non-conventional thrusters such as surface piercing propellers to small craft. Due to the availability of towing tank data from a surface piercing propeller, a methodology to translate measured performance data for non-conventional thrusters as a computer simulation block needed to be developed. The derived modeling block of the surface piercing propeller, which took the form of a neural net, was integrated with an AC induction motor prime mover module, detailed dynamic propulsion shaft module and Proportional-Integral (PI) control module. The modules were finally augmented with a block implementing Savitsky’s method for planing-hull modeling. Simulations were conducted using full-scale real-world conditions for a hull Bayliner 170 Bowrider boat the hull of which can be adjusted to accommodate for a 50HP electric motor and a surface-piercing propeller. The runs conducted demonstrated the model functionality and level of detail.

This paper concerns the nonlinear, higher-harmonic, wave-forces acting on a vertical surface-piercing cylinder. New laboratory data is presented which confirms that in the case a vertical cylinder, the diameter of which is large but not sufficiently large that the body lies within the linear diffraction regime, the second- and third-harmonic forces are not well described by existing models. This is particularly apparent when the incident waves are steep and have a relatively small wave period. Indeed, under these conditions the second-, third- and fourth-harmonic forces are shown to be comparable in size. This is clearly at odds with the results of a traditional perturbation expansion. An explanation for this lies in the nature of the scattered wave field, particularly the high-frequency waves identified by Sheikh & Swan [1]. The phasing of these scattered waves are, at least in part, dependent upon the motion of the fluid around the circumference of the cylinder and will not therefore be captured by a series solution based solely on the harmonics of the incident wave motion. The paper considers several test cases, fully exploring the correlation between the nonlinear forcing and the high-frequency scattering. The practical implications of these results are also addressed.

The paper describes new laboratory observations concerning the interaction between a series of steep incident waves and a vertical, surface-piercing, column. The motivation for the study arose as a result of wave impact damage sustained to the undersides of several concrete gravity-based structures in the northern North Sea. Earlier work, Swan et al. [1], demonstrated that in the case of multiple column structures, the individual diameters of which lie outside the typical (linear) diffraction regime, there exists a new and previously unexpected mechanism leading to the scattering of high-frequency waves. Although the implications of this effect was carefully documented, not least because it explained the occurrence of wave impacts in relatively moderate seas, its physical origins remained unclear. In particular, it was uncertain whether this type of scattering would be observed in the case of a single column, or whether it results from the transmission of wave modes trapped between the legs of a multiple column structure. In the case of a single column, if the diameter, D, is such that the flow lies within the drag-inertia regime, D/λ < 0.2, where λ is the corresponding wavelength, linear diffraction theory suggests there will be little or no scattered wave energy. The present laboratory observations demonstrate that this is not, in fact, the case. If the incident waves are steep, a strong and apparently localised interaction is clearly observed at the water surface. This, in turn, leads to the scattering of high-frequency waves. Although these waves are relatively small in amplitude, their subsequent interaction with other steep incident waves takes the form of a classic long-wave short-wave interaction and can produce a significant increase in the maximum crest elevation relative to those recorded in the absence of the structure. The present paper will demonstrate that the scattering of these high-frequency waves, and their subsequent nonlinear interaction with other incident waves, has significant implications for the specification of an effective air-gap and hence for the setting of deck elevations.

Surface Piercing Propeller (SPP) can achieve high propulsive efficiency on high-speed vessels planing to reduce the frictional resistance of hull. It has the characteristic blade section and works partially submerged condition. The blades repeat entry to and exit from the water free surface and the suction sides and trailing edge of blades are exposed to ventilated cavitation while they are under the water. And interface near SPP is severely deformed by the high rotating blades. This working condition of SPP, therefore, makes it hard that propeller open characteristics are estimated with high reliability. Because SPP is unusual propeller having above difficulty of the performance estimation, the studies for SPP are few compared with large sized propellers for merchant ships. Although the various model tests had been carried out to understand the physical phenomena around various SPPs and their effects on propeller performances, they were not universal approach with standardized test conditions and propeller shape, as mentioned in 23th ITTC report and recommendation (2002). In applying the conventional calculation based on potential theory to SPP, there are many difficulties to model the physical phenomena theoretically. In calculations by Furuya (1984, 1985), thickness of blade and ventilated cavitation were non-consideration, and it was assumed that the suction side of the blade was fully ventilated in the water. In calculations by Young and Kinnas (2001), the interface deformation near SPP was not modeled theoretically. Therefore, they attributed the difference from experimental results to the effect of incompleteness of numerical modeling. On the other hand, CFD analysis can treat the effects of physical phenomena including thick ventilated cavitation and the sharp deformation of interface around SPP. In addition, the characteristic blade shape is modeled accurately without the geometric limitation in CFD. In this paper, typical SPP with experimental results open to the public is analyzed by CFD-RANS approach using Volume of Fluid (VOF) method based on interface-capturing algorithm at wide range of propeller advance coefficient J. Regarding propeller open characteristics, the 6-component force/moment fluctuations by blade rotations, and ventilation patterns, analyses results are compared with measured values. Moreover, the results of simulations in various Froude numbers and Weber numbers are evaluated whether their effects were negligible when they are sufficiently high, in the same manner as the results found by the other’s experimental studies (Shiba, 1953; Brandt, 1973).

Effects of free surface on development of turbulent boundary layer and wake fields were investigated. By measuring flow field around a surface piercing cylinder in various advance speed conditions in a towing tank, free surface effects were identified. A towed underwater Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system was used to measure the flow field under free surface. The cross section of the test model was water plane shape of the Wigley hull, of which longitudinal length and width were 1.0 m and 100 mm, respectively. With sharp bow shape and slender cross section, flow separation was not expected in two-dimensional flow. Flow fields near the free-surface and in deep location that two-dimensional flow field was expected were measured and compared to identify free-surface effects. Some planes perpendicular to longitudinal direction near the model surface and behind the model were selected to track development of turbulent boundary layer. Froude numbers of the test conditions were from 0.126 to 0.40 and corresponding Reynolds numbers were from 395,000 to 1,250,000. In the lowest Froude number condition, free-surface wave was hardly observed and only free surface effects without surface wave could be identified while violent free-surface behavior due to wave-induced separation dominated the flow fields in the highest Froude number condition. From the instantaneous velocity fields, Time-mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, and flow structure derived by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) were analyzed. As the free-surface effect, development of retarded wake, free-surface waves, and wave-induced separation were mainly observed.

The flow around free-surface piercing, low aspect-ratio circular cylinder is investigated by means of unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) calculations together with verification procedures and comparison with small-scale experimental and Particle Image Velocimetry results. A two-phase interface capturing model is used to handle the free-surface flow, together with k-ω SST turbulence model. We investigate physical and modeling aspects of this problem in order to gain more knowledge about the interaction of free-surface and free-end effects so that this mechanism is better understood and taken into account when modeling the problem in engineering-applied situations, such as the vortex induced motion of spars, tension-leg platforms and semi-submersibles. The case herein presented is a captive, low aspect-ratio cylinder (L/D = 2.0) with flow velocity corresponding to Reynolds and Froude numbers (both based on diameter) of Re = 4.3 × 104 and FnD = 0.31, respectively. We will show that appreciable free-surface effects are perceived on the flow, but with dominance of free-end effects, at least in terms of forces. Furthermore, we investigate different boundary conditions that would represent this free-surface problem to show that the separation of viscous and free-surface effects is not valid in this instance. Therefore, the interaction between viscous and free-surface effects is also tangentially investigated. In order to support our conclusions, we will show forces with uncertainty estimation and field variables obtained with different modeling strategies, unveiling physical and numerical aspects of this problem.

Abstract In the present work, thermoset carbon fiber–reinforced polymer (CFRP) was spot joined to magnesium alloy AZ31B by a friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR) process. Lap shear tensile and cross-tension testing were used to evaluate the mechanical joint performance. An average lap shear tensile load of 5.18 kN was achieved, while an average of 2.81 kN was found from cross-tension testing. All F-SPR samples showed pull-out of AZ31B after mechanical testing, indicating good mechanical interlocking between the steel rivet and AZ31B. Corrosion potential was measured for each material to establish the galvanic corrosion characteristics. As expected, AZ31B was found to be the most active, while thermoset CFRP was the most noble. The steel rivet fell between the AZ31B (active) and the thermoset CFRP (noble). Salt fog corrosion testing (ASTM B-117) was performed to evaluate the corrosion performance of the uncoated F-SPR joint. With up to 200 h of exposure, the post-corroded F-SPR joint integrity retained 81.2% of the pre-exposure F-SPR joint strength with AZ31B pull-out failure mode. From cross-sectional analysis of the F-SPR joint, extensive corrosion of AZ31B was observed at the joint and other exposure areas. However, steel rivet was not significantly corroded potentially due to sacrificial anode effect by which AZ31B corroded first in the galvanic couple.

Friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR) process has been proposed to join low ductility lightweight materials, and has shown advantages over fusion welding, solid state welding and traditional mechanical joining processes in joining dissimilar as well as low ductility materials. Because of the thermo-mechanical nature of F-SPR process, the formation of the joint is determined by riveting force and softening degree of the materials. However, it is still not clear that how exactly the riveting force and generated frictional heat jointly influence the mechanical interlocking formation and inhibit cracks during F-SPR process. To address these issues, in current study, F-SPR process was applied to join 2.2 mm-thick AA6061-T6 aluminum alloy to 2.0 mm-thick AZ31B magnesium alloy. The correlation of riveting force, torque responses as well as energy input with joint quality were investigated systematically under a wide range of process parameter combinations. It was found that a relatively greater final peak force and higher energy input were favorable to produce sound joints. Based on that, a two-stage method was proposed to better control the energy input and riveting force. It was found that the joints produced by the two-stage method exhibited significantly improved lap-shear strength, i.e., 70% higher than traditional SPR joints and 30% higher than one-stage F-SPR joints. This research provides a valuable reference for further understanding the F-SPR joint formation and process optimization.

Abstract The present paper is concerned with the accurate prediction of nonlinear wave kinematics underneath measured time histories of surface elevation. It is desired to develop a method which is useful in analysis of offshore measurements close to wind turbine foundations. The method should therefore be robust in relatively shallow water and should be able to account for the presence of the foundation and the shortcrestedness of offshore seastates. The present method employs measurements of surface elevation time histories at one or a small number of locations and solves the associated velocity potential by minimizing the error in the free surface boundary conditions. The velocity potential satisfies exactly Laplace’s equation, the bed boundary condition and (optionally) the boundary condition on the wall of a uniform surface piercing column. This is achieved by associating one wavenumber with every wave frequency thereby sacrificing the possibility of following the nonlinear wave evolution but ensuring a good description of the wave properties locally. For shortcrested waves, the direction of wave component propagation is drawn from a known or assumed directional spectrum. No attempt is made to calculate the directional distribution of the wave field from the surface elevation measurements since this is usually not realistically possible with the available data. The method is set up for analysis with or without a uniform current, for shortcrested or longcrested waves and with or without a surface piercing column in the wave field. It has been compared with laboratory data for steep longcrested and shortcrested waves. The method is shown to be in good agreement with measurements. Since the method is based on a Fourier series of surface elevation, however, it cannot model overtopping breaking waves and associated wave impact loading. For problems where wave breaking is important, the method may serve as a screening analysis used to select wave events for detailed analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
