Анотація:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how to find the optimal investment level in protecting an organisation’s assets. Design/methodology/approach This study integrates a case study of an international financial organisation with various methods and theories in security economics and mathematics, such as value-at-risk (VaR), Monte Carlo simulation, exponential and Poisson probability distributions. Thereby it combines theory and empirical findings to establish a new approach to determining optimal security investment levels. Findings The results indicate that optimal security investment levels can be found through computer simulation with historical incident data to find VaR. By combining various scenarios, the convex graph of the risk cost function has been plotted, where the minimum of the graph represents the optimal invest level for an asset. Research limitations/implications The limitations of the research include a modest number of loss observations from one case study, and the use of normal probability distribution. The approach has limitations where there are no historical data available or the data has zero losses. These areas should undergo further research including larger data set of losses and exploring other probability distributions. Practical implications The results can be used by leading business practitioners to assist them with decision making on investment to the increased protection of an asset. Originality/value The originality of this research is in its new way of combining theories with historical data to create methods to measure theoretical and empirical strength of a control (or set of controls) and translating it to loss probabilities and loss sizes.

This paper looks at three examples that demonstrate how smart operations can reduce the uncertainty to reliably contribute to sustained growth in operations effectiveness. These relate to: demand/capability change; critical asset management; and, adaptive collaboration across processing/production areas and sites. While many heavy process industry organisations try to measure and manage the processing/production facilities using the operations effectiveness phrase, many have encountered difficulty in delivering the desired business improvement—whether it is achieving, sustaining, evolving or rolling out. This paper proposes a re-think based on successes in several industries. This paper defines what working smarter really means through making earlier and better decisions that affect the current performance of the processing/production facility and the supply chains. These decisions are often balancing naturally conflicting demands, both between facility and supply chain and between present and future events.

In the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) have a critical role to play in order to ensure that organisations have necessary human capital and human resource capabilities to deal with multiple strategic shifts. The analysis of data collected in our study reveals that future CHROs acknowledge dual roles—strategic and operational—that they would have to deliver on. While the strategic role is explorative in nature, the operational role is more exploitative in nature and hence the need for ambidexterity in CHRO roles.

The paper describes research examining the trends in balancing rotary machines and the application of the sequence of steps in execution of the operational balancing of an impeller of the industrial furnace emissions fan. The balancing process is based on the correction of the weight distribution of the body with the given axis of rotation. In trial operation, vibrations (with the measurement of the oscillation phase) were measured on both emission fan rotor bearings. Since the measured vibration value was higher than recommended, it was necessary to take steps to balance the fan’s impeller. The first step of the operational balancing is to identify the initial vibration vector relative to the reference mark, arbitrarily located on the rotating wheel of the fan. In trial operation, the balancing weight mass was changed in the selected balancing level, resulting in the change of the vibration vector compared to the initial state. The size and the angular position of the balancing weight were determined from the vibration values measured. 15 months into operation after the impeller was balanced, the diagnosis of its current technical condition was performed. Total vibrations of the device were measured in the low- and high-frequency range, at four measuring points on the rotor and the drive engine. The measurement confirmed a satisfactory technical condition of the engine and the fan equipment. The effect of balancing has also been demonstrated in the case observed. Reduced bearing wear, elimination of recurrent defects, foundation damage, etc., have been observed.

Imposing content constraints is very important in most operational computerized adaptive testing (CAT) programs in educational measurement. Shadow test approach to CAT (Shadow CAT) offers an elegant solution to imposing statistical and nonstatistical constraints by projecting future consequences of item selection. The original form of Shadow CAT presumes fixed test lengths. The goal of the current study was to extend Shadow CAT to tests under variable-length termination conditions and evaluate its performance relative to other content balancing approaches. The study demonstrated the feasibility of constructing Shadow CAT with variable test lengths and in operational CAT programs. The results indicated the superiority of the approach compared with other content balancing methods.

Due to the general macroeconomic downturn, many companies have turned to offshoring - sending a function overseas - to reduce production costs. While some companies elect to outsource overseas production to outside companies, many companies choose to keep production in-house and therefore create captive production facilities overseas. In many countries, the government will provide financial incentives (e.g. tax breaks, loans, subsidies) to certain companies in exchange for creating employment opportunities and industry knowledge within their borders. These financial incentives may tempt companies to shift more and more functions overseas; however, in many cases, there are significant operational risks involved with shifting functions overseas. This thesis uses a six-month project as a case study for discussing ways to weigh financial benefits against operational risks. The project was conducted at the European headquarters of Spirit AeroSystems, the largest independent designer and manufacturer of independent aerostructures for the commercial aircraft industry. Spirit Europe recently launched a greenfield factory in Malaysia. Malaysia was selected as the factory site for a variety of reasons; among which was a long term tax incentive. This thesis describes the process and tools used to select an optimal transfer pricing relationship (i.e. scope of work to be performed overseas) and transaction methodology that would best monetize the long-term tax incentive without incurring unacceptable levels of operational risk.
(cont.) A comprehensive functional analysis was conducted to understand operational risk and economic value. Next, a Monte Carlo simulation was created to better understand project profitability. The results from the functional analysis and the Monte Carlo simulation are united to identify the optimal transfer pricing structure and methodology. The unintuitive result is that, for both operational and financial reasons, the scope of work transferred to the low tax jurisdiction (in this case, Spirit Malaysia) should be fairly limited for existing contracts.

The implementation of the mandatory alternative payment model (APM) guarantees savings for Medicare regardless of participant hospitals ability for reducing spending that shifts the cost minimization burden from insurers onto the hospital administrators. Surgical interventions account for more than 30% and 40% of hospitals total cost and total revenue, respectively, with a cost structure consisting of nearly 56% direct cost, thus, large cost reduction is possible through efficient operation management. However, optimizing operating rooms (ORs) schedules is extraordinarily challenging due to the complexities involved in the process. We present new algorithms and managerial guidelines to address the problem of OR planning and scheduling with disturbances in demand and case times, and inconsistencies among the performance measures. We also present an extension of these algorithms that addresses production scheduling for sustainability. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of these algorithms via simulation and statistical analyses.

This thesis deals with balancing of rotary machines in one plane. It is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part is deals with the basics of vibrostatics and operational balancing, with emphasis on the evaluation of machine vibration. The practical part deals with SW solution in Matlab environment. It explains the functionality of individual parts, their arrangement, connection and mutual continuity, and layout of the program. The programmed solution is tested on a series of measurements in which the balancing itself is evalated and compared with the classical method used in balancing rotary machines in one plane.

Balancing trade-offs between production cost and holding cost is critical for production and operations management. Utilization of an operating room affects production cost, which relates to makespan, and patient flowtime affects holding cost. There are trade-offs between two objectives, to minimize makespan and to minimize flowtime. However, most existing constructive heuristics focus only on single-objective optimization. In the current literature, NEH is the best constructive heuristic to minimize makespan, and LR heuristic is the best to minimize flowtime. In this thesis, we propose a current and future deviation (CFD) heuristic to balance trade-offs between makespan and flowtime minimizations. Based on 5400 randomly generated instances and 120 instances in Taillard’s benchmarks, our CFD heuristic outperforms NEH and LR heuristics on trade-off balancing, and achieves the most stable performances from the perspective of statistical process control.

Background: Since quick change is one of the most distinguishing qualities of today's market, organizations must be able to cope with it and match markets by keeping up with new market trends and wants, as well as adapting to changes in market features. This can be achieved by pursuing both exploration and exploitation to ensure success in the short and long term. Since this is the case, it is vital that companies find the right balance between operation and innovation to be able to exploit present opportunities and explore future directions. Purpose: This research aims to study the role of ambidexterity in achieving the desired balance in different industries. Every organization is unique, and companies differ from each other in many ways such as; work system, organizational structure, work philosophy and size. This study discussed the issue of balancing innovation and operation, to evaluate the process of choosing the right ambidextrous approach to be followed by different organizations across different industries. Method: Multiple case study was used. Data collected had both primary and secondary sources where the primary sources were collected through semi-structured interviews and the secondary sources were archives and reports. Grounded analysis was used in the analysis process to conclude the theory. Conclusion: The research results showed that when organizations achieve ambidexterity by following one of the ambidexterity approaches, the choice of the right approach depends on certain factors on different levels that need to be considered, and the four tensions of ambidexterity differ from one approach to another. Hence, the tensions should be verified and handled in relevance to the followed ambidexterity approach.

L'étude porte sur la faisabilité d'un contrôle distribué, auto-adaptatif et temps réel des ressources locales et des composants du réseau. La piste principale explorée correspond à des agents autonomes qui peuvent construire des structures collaboratives ad-hoc suivant les besoins du réseau. Ces structures collaboratives adresseront divers modes de fonctionnement, du marché de l'énergie J-1 à infraday au marché d'ajustement (services systèmes) et au contrôle local (fréquence et auto-cicatrisation)
In close relationship with the European project DREAM, this doctoral thesis focus on operational evolutions in tomorrow’s distribution networks wich will integrate a larger amount of distributed renewable resources. A centralized control of all the entities (from controllable loads to embedded generators) is overall optimal but complex and not so reliable. This study addresses the feasibility of a distributed control, autonomous, self-learning and real time operation of local resources and network’s components. The main concern to explore will be the creation of ad-hoc federations of agents that will flexibly adjust their hierarchy to current needs. These collaborative structures will use different coordination strategies ranging from market-based transactions, to balancing optimization market (ancillary services) and to local control (frequency control and self-healing)

Nigerian women have become more integrated into the workforce, but this integration has led to conflicts between work and family responsibilities. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Nigerian women regarding challenges and strategies in management and leadership positions in relation to their domestic lives and responsibilities. Liberal and social feminist theory and gendered leadership theory were used as the conceptual framework of the study. The findings of this study came from data obtained from semistructured interviews with 15 Nigerian women in leadership and management positions regarding their perceptions and lived experiences of balancing work and family responsibilities. The data analysis consisted of using a modified Van Kaam process, which resulted in 7 themes including multiple roles make balance difficult, supportive husband as a key to balance, and the role of God in supporting and guiding the women. The findings of this study could contribute to positive social change by providing necessary information regarding how Nigerian women perceive their roles in management and leadership positions as they grapple with the challenges of pursuing a career and maintaining their families, leading to more informed organizations and policymakers. This study includes findings about how women perform and are evaluated as managers, which could eventually influence hiring practices by highlighting the barriers and strategies to overcome them as experienced by Nigerian women in management positions.

The fundamentals of kinematics and dynamics of transport piston internal combustion engines made using different layout schemes are presented. Along with the traditional in-line, V-shaped, including oppositional, arrangement of cylinders, schemes with "staggered" arrangement of cylinders in the block at the displaced connecting rod necks of the crankshaft of the engine are considered. The kinematics of the coaxial crank mechanism is considered in detail. The questions of dynamics with reduction of calculated dependences of forces, moments, a choice of a rational order of work of cylinders in relation to the considered kinematic schemes are in detail stated. Considerable attention is paid to the unevenness of the crankshaft rotation speed and engine balancing. The loads on the main and connecting rod bearings of the crankshaft, the knowledge of which is necessary in determining the bearing capacity of bearing units, are also considered. Meets the requirements of the Federal state educational standards of higher education of the last generation. For students of higher educational institutions studying in the direction of training 23.03.03 "Operation of transport and technological machines and complexes" and related areas.

This book seeks to revitalize the humanitarian mission of the international law governing armed conflict, which is being frustrated due to states’ actual practice. In order to achieve its two aims—creating an environment in which full abidance by the law becomes an attainable norm, thus facilitating the second and more important aim of reducing human suffering—it calls for the acknowledgment of realpolitik considerations that dictate states’ and militaries’ behavior. This requires recognition of the core interests of law-abiding states, fighting in their own self-defense—those that, from their militaries’ professional perspective, are essential in order to exercise their defense. Internalizing the importance of existential security interests, when drawing the contours of the law, should not automatically come at the expense of the core values of the humanitarian agenda—for example, the distinction rule. Rather, it allows more room for the humanitarian arena. The suggested tool to allow for such an improved dialogue is the standards and principles of military professionalism. Militaries function in a professional manner; they respect their respective doctrines, operational principles, fighting techniques, and values. Their performances are not random or incidental. The suggested paradigm surfaces and leverages the constraining elements hidden in military professionalism. It suggests a new paradigm in balancing the principles of military necessity and humanity, it deals with the legality of a preemptive strike and the leveraging of military strategy as a constraining tool, and it offers a normative framework for introducing deterrence within the current contours of the law.

This concluding chapter presents a more general discussion of the interrelationships between ethnicity, organized crime, and social capital, especially as it may apply to the contemporary context in Chicago Heights. This study connected the decades-long ‘success’ of the organized crime operation in Chicago Heights to the persistent balancing act between the resources of closure, violence, and brokerage. Too much or too little of one or another would be potentially damaging to this long-term success. Closure brings value to the organization because it promotes a familiarity and assumed level of trust between individuals. However, when there are strong ties binding groups together, certainty and predictability triumph over variability and innovation. Individuals are unaware of or reluctant to think through or even see new opportunities because the social networks place a premium on routine beliefs and behaviors. An antidote to the excesses of closure is violence. New ideas and new approaches were pushed forward by force and the elimination of opposition. Today, although Italian organized crime presence in Chicago Heights has significantly diminished, organized crime in Chicago Heights persists. African Americans and Latinos have largely taken over the vice operations.

Анотація:
Strategies for successful information management that supports multidisciplinary systems engineering are reported on. Inter-disciplinary and inter-lifecycle integration are considered as prerequisites to establish efficient information management. Top and middle management, and designer perspectives on integrated information management have been studied in an interview study within electrical and electronics, and software R&D departments in the automotive industry. Identified misalignments in needs, expected benefits and goals for information management between different perspectives are described. Ways to achieve synergies and conflicts with operational and strategic impacts on information management are discussed in the paper.

Анотація:
Risk is a function of the probability and consequence of an event that negatively impacts pipeline operations. These events may range from the shut-in of a compressor to a pipeline rupture. In order to quantify risk, it is important to have a thorough method of evaluating the probability and severity of the incident. Until recently, the methods used to assess risk have been mostly subjective and qualitative. Enhanced methods are now available that allow pipeline companies to gain a better understanding of the true risk and to realistically determine the availability and reliability of the pipeline. These methods facilitate balancing the cost of extra safeguards or protection layers with the actual risk of an event occurring, ultimately improving the financial success of a pipeline company.
