Chick feeding in common diving petrels (Pelecanoides urinatrix exsul) and South Georgia diving petrels (P. georgicus) was studied on Bird Island, South Georgia. Complete chick meals removed from the proventriculus of adults averaged 25.5 g (n = 32) for common diving petrels (17.6% of adult mass) and 23.3 g (n = 24) for South Georgia diving petrels (20.2% of adult mass); neither contained stomach oils. The sum of the positive mass increments during overnight weighings (SUM) averaged 48.6 g for common diving petrel chicks (n = 78 chick nights) and 41.6 g for South Georgia diving petrel chicks (n = 78 chick nights). Average adult feeding frequencies were 0.95 meals day−1 and 0.92 meals day−1, respectively. Relative meal size in diving petrels was similar to that of other procellariiforms, but SUM averaged about twice that of other petrels. The lower conversion efficiency of meals to body mass in diving petrel chicks reflects the absence of stomach oils in the diet. Higher chick feeding frequency and lower variance in SUM are consistent with the hypothesis that diving petrels forage nearshore on reliable food supply compared with other procellariiforms.

Pollen morphology of six Verbascum (Scrophulariaceae) taxa belonging to five different groups in the genus [V. georgicum (group E), V. nudatum var. nudatum (group F), V. cariense (group F), V. bithynicum (group H), V. pycnostachyum (group K), and V. lasianthum (group L)] was studied. Pollen slides were prepared according to the Woodhouse method and were examined with light-microscopy (LM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). All studied pollen grains are generally monads, though tetrads (5 %) were observed in Verbascum nudatum var. nudatum. Pollen grains of all studied taxa were determined as isopolar and radially symmetric. In general terms, aperture types are trizonocolporate, but also trisyncolpate (V. lasianthum 10 %, V. pycnostachum 1 %, and V. georgicum 4 %) and trizonocolpate (V. cariense 10 %, V. bithynicum 10%, V. lasianthum 90%, V. pycnostachyum 9%, and V. georgicum 96 %) aperture types were observed. The shapes of the pollen grains were determined as prolate, subprolate, prolate-spheroidal and oblate-spheroidal. The sculpture was reticulate in all cases. The results of the study corroborate that morphological features, such as pollen shape, polar axis length (P), equatorial axis length (L), aperture type, surface ornamentation, muri thickness, and lumina shape, show differences which can be taken into consideration in the systematic discrimination within the groups, and also for discrimination of the groups in the genus.

AbstractPseudochaenichthys georgianus is a member of the unique Channichthyidae family of fishes, which lack haemoglobin. The distribution, length-frequency and summer diet are described from 14 bottom trawl surveys undertaken in the summers between 1986 and 2006. Pseudochaenichthys georgianus (50–590 mm TL) were caught throughout the South Georgia shelf from depths of 76–370 m, but very few specimens (< 1%) were caught on the Shag Rocks shelf. Multiple cohorts were present during each survey and length-frequency analysis of these cohorts suggests that growth is fast during the first 3–4 years. Stomach contents analysis (2005 & 2006) indicated that P. georgianus is a pelagic or semi pelagic predator, with the summer diet dominated by Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). Fish (channichthyids and notothenids) were also taken, but were a relatively minor part of the diet.

The paper presents an assessment of the prospects for the use of five species of the Pyrus L. genus: Pyrus communis L., P. caucasica Fed., P. georgica Kuth., P. vsevolodii Heideman, P. salicifolia Pall. in cultivation on the territory of the Greater Caucasus. These are the species that are most common in the north-eastern part of the Greater Caucasus (Azerbaijan). The evaluation of the studied species was carried out in terms of their viability in ex situ conditions. To assess the prospects for the introduction of trees and shrubs in ex situ conditions, the scale of E. O. Iskendarov was used. The work carried out made it possible to reveal that these plant species are divided into two groups under ex situ conditions. As a result, it was found that none of the species fell into the lower group. Group 1 of promising plants included 3 species (P. salicifolia Pall., P. georgica Kuth., P. vsevolodii Heideman). The other 2 species are assigned to the 2nd group of promising plants.

The discovery and identification of species is fundamental to the documentation, conservation and management of biodiversity. The taxonomy of the antitropical Pseudocaranx dentex complex (Carangidae) is confused and inconsistently reported. Previous morphological analyses concluded that this complex consisted of three species, namely P. sp. ‘dentex’, P. georgianus and P. dinjerra, in Australian waters. This study used genetic (COI sequence) and morphological data to evaluate the validity of this conclusion. The COI data showed the presence of three discrete lineages within this complex, which appear to correspond to the above-mentioned three species. They also suggested that P. sp. ‘dentex’ is closely related to, and possibly the same species as, P. dentex from southern Africa and the Mediterranean Sea. Also, the extent of morphological and geographical overlap between P. georgianus and P. dinjerra was greater than previously documented which, uncorrected, could lead to identification errors and present challenges for monitoring and management of harvested stocks of these species. By answering important taxonomic questions, our results will facilitate the proper interpretation of the results of past studies and the design of future studies of the P. dentex complex. They have also highlighted the value of molecular data for identifying species in morphologically conservative taxa.

Feeding behaviour, ecological role in the marine food web and population trends of the Antarctic shag Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis and the South Georgia shag P. georgianus in Antarctica are analysed. The diving depths and duration recorded for these shags are the deepest and longest among all flying birds in Antarctica and match deep dives performed by small Antarctic penguins. Individual shags of both sexes partition foraging depths and food resources, which might diminish intra-specific competition. Like other sub-Antarctic shags, P. bransfieldensis and P. georgianus are bottom feeders that prey predominantly on demersal fish. In the southern Scotia Arc and west Antarctic Peninsula, nototheniids, mainly Notothenia coriiceps, constitute their main prey. Shag partners alternate the time at sea and, as the energy requirements at the nest increase, they increase the number but reduce the duration of the feeding trips. A steady declining trend in the number of breeding pairs of both species has been observed in the last decade at several Antarctic localities; this phenomenon at the South Shetland Islands might be at least partially explained by the effect of the commercial fishery on their prey. In inshore shallow waters shags occupy the trophic niche of main predators of demersal fish and play an important ecological role as regulators of populations of particular fish prey that have marked site fidelity. The potential use of shags as biomonitors in Antarctica is discussed.

Aggregations abound in nature, from cell formations to locust swarms. One method of modelling these aggregations is the non-local aggregation equation with the addition of degenerate diffusion. In this article we develop a finite volume based numerical scheme for this style of equation and perform an error, computation time, and convergence analysis. In addition we investigate two methods for approximating the non-local component. References A. J. Bernoff and C. M. Topaz. Nonlocal aggregation models: A primer of swarm equilibria. Helminths of 12 fish species collected near the South Orkney Islands, West Antarctica were studied. In the whole sample of 115 fish specimens, we identified one species of Monogenea, 5 species of Trematoda, 4 species of Cestoda, 5 species of Nematoda, and 7 species of Acanthocephala. All cestode species, 3 species of nematodes, and 5 species of acanthocephalans were represented only by larval stages; fish are definitive hosts for the remaining 10 helminth species. Details of composition and structure of helminth communities were studied in 3 fish species: Chaenocephalus aceratus (Lönnberg, 1906), Champsocephalus gunnari Lönnberg, 1905, and Pseudochaenichthys georgianus Norman, 1937, each represented by more than 20 specimens in a sample. In these hosts, 19, 8, and 16 helminth species were found, correspondingly. In the helminth communities of C. aceratus and P. georgianus, the highest values of the infection prevalence and abundance were recorded for larval cestodes (Diphyllobothrium sp., Tetrabothriidea), nematodes (Pseudoterranova sp., Contracaecum sp.), acanthocephalans (Corynosoma spp.), as well as adults of the trematode Neolebouria georgiensis Gibson, 1976. The same trematode species and larval cestodes predominated in the helminth community of C. gunnari. All recorded species of parasites are generalists, each known from a range of fish hosts in Antarctica.

A research survey for demersal finfish was completed using bottom trawl fishing gear, following a random stratified sampling design, between 50 and 500 m on shelf areas of subarea 48.1 (Elephant Island) and Subarea 48.2 (South Orkney Island). An acoustic survey was simultaneously carried out to enhance knowledge of bathymetry and the distribution of fish and krill in the studied area. The cruise took place between the 6 and 27 January 2018. A total of 36 hauls were carried out, 15 around Elephant Island and 21 around the South Orkney Islands. A total of 37 fish species were caught with a total biomass of 19,112 kg. The main species encountered included Notothenia rossii and Champsocephalus gunnari, with nominal catches weighing 16,204 (85%) and 876 kg (5%), respectively. Other species of fish accounted noticeably for lower amounts (11%), such as Gobionotothen gibberifrons (330 kg), Chaenocephalus aceratus (322 kg), and Pseudochaenichthys georgianus (299 kg). Indicative estimates of standing stock biomass suggested that in this cruise, N. rossii was the most abundant demersal finfish species in the Elephant Island area, followed by C. gunnari. Differently, on the South Orkney Islands shelf, the most abundant species was G. gibberifrons, followed by P. georgianus. The study provides biological data (length frequency distribution, median size, sex ratio, gonad maturity stages, length-weight relationship) on the main species captured during the survey, and the oceanographic characteristics (depth profiles of temperature, salinity, density) obtained with CTD around the South Orkney Islands.

ABSTRACT The recently discovered RraA protein acts as an inhibitor of the essential endoribonuclease RNase E, and we demonstrated that ectopic expression of RraA affects the abundance of more than 700 transcripts in Escherichia coli (K. Lee, X. Zhan, J. Gao, J. Qiu, Y. Feng, R. Meganathan, S. N. Cohen, and G. Georgiou, Cell 114:623-634, 2003). We show that rraA is expressed from its own promoter, P rraA , located in the menA-rraA intergenic region. Primer extension and lacZ fusion analysis revealed that transcription from P rraA is elevated upon entry into stationary phase in a σs-dependent manner. In addition, the stability of the rraA transcript is dependent on RNase E activity, suggesting the involvement of a feedback circuit in the regulation of the RraA level in E. coli.

It was necessary for the first physicians to have the knowledge of plants, because phytotherapy was an integral part of medicine from the very beginning. For this reason, botany was a significant part of the curriculum at medical faculties in the XVIII and XIX century. Some professors at these faculties were known in international scientific circles as prominent botanists (P?l Kitaibel, August Kanitz, Giovanni Scopoli, Carl von Linn?, etc.). After the liberation from the Turkish rule, flora was insufficiently explored in the territory of today?s Vojvodina, which made it an interesting area for botanical studies undertaken by science professors from the universities in Vienna, Pest, and Cluj. A significant contribution to their scientific work was given by researchers from Srem, who in addition to their medical and pharmaceutical work practiced also botany. Some of them had their results published in publications and some became members of the European scientific natural history societies (Andreas Budai, Georgius Streim, Bartholom?us Emmanuel Godra, Mathias Kirchbaum, and Andreas Wolny).

The references to Rani (Aran) as Persia ("Mirian... called from Persia his relative, a descendant of kings, named Peroz") and the inhabitants of this country as Persians ("in Ran, wherever the Persians fought") should not be taken literally. In Georgian historical works, the terms "Persia" and" Persian " in addition to Persia and Persians also meant countries and peoples of the Near and Middle East-Arabs, Turks, and others: "Sultan Arfasaran came out, king of P e R s I I" (Leonti Mroveli, Life of kings); "P e R s I d s K I e s u l t a n s, far and near" ("Chronicle of the times of lash Giorgi", life of king Giorgi); "the Georgians entered the castle, and there was a strong battle, and p e R s s B a g d a d a were defeated" (Chronicle of the century). This situation is due to the fact that the entire territory to the East of the Caucasus for centuries belonged to and was ruled by the Persian Empire of the Achaemenid, Arshakid and Sasanian eras (much later the Arab Caliphate and then the Turkish Sultanate appeared on the historical scene). In Georgian historical texts, in particular in the chronicle "Life of the kings" by Leonti Mroveli, a logical geographical description is given about this – "Persians from the East of the sun". According to Georgian historical data, these peoples also include Albanians who lived to the East of the Georgians. One of the most notable historical events is an extensive episode of romantic love in the life of an Albanian Princess, the daughter of the ruler of Rani (Aran) Barzaboda and a thorough historical account of the dramatic state activities of the Queen of Kartli (Iberia), mother of the great Georgian king Vakhtang Gorgasal-S a g d u x t.

We assessed trends in causes and outcomes of hospitalization among people living with HIV (PLWH) admitted to the Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center (IDACIRC) in Tbilisi, Georgia. Retrospective analysis included adult PLWH admitted to IDACIRC for at least 24 h. Internationally validated categorization was used to split AIDS admissions into mild, moderate, and severe AIDS. A total of 2085 hospitalizations among 1123 PLWH were registered over 2012–2017 with 65.1% (731/1123) of patients presenting with CD4 count <200. Of 2085 hospitalizations, 931 (44.7%) were due to AIDS-defining illnesses. In 2012, AIDS conditions accounted for 50.3% of admissions compared to 41.6% in 2017 ( p = 0.16). Overall, 167 hospitalizations (8.0%) resulted in lethal outcome. AIDS admissions had higher mortality than non-AIDS admissions (11.5% vs 5.2%, p < 0.0001). Among 167 deceased patients, 137 (82.0%) had CD4 count <200 at admission. In multivariate analysis, factors significantly associated with mortality included severe AIDS versus non-AIDS admission (OR 2.81, 95% CI: 1.10–7.15), CD4 cell counts <50 (OR 4.34, 95% CI: 2.52–7.47), and 50–100 (OR 2.37, 95% CI: 1.27–4.42) versus >200. Active AIDS disease remains a significant cause of hospitalization and fatal outcome in Georgia. Earlier diagnosis of HIV is critical for decreasing AIDS hospitalizations and mortality.

Objectives. To measure trends before, during, and after implementation of Georgia House Bill 954, a limit on abortion at 22 or more weeks of gestation passed in 2012, in total abortions and abortions by gestational age and state residence. Methods. We analyzed aggregate year-level induced termination of pregnancy data from the Georgia Department of Public Health from 2007 to 2017. We used linear regression to describe annual trends in the number of abortions and χ2 analyses to describe changes in proportions of abortions by gestational age (< 20 weeks, 20–21 weeks, and > 21 weeks) across policy implementation periods (before, partial, and full implementation) for Georgia residents and nonresidents. Results. Although the total number of abortions and abortions at 21 weeks or less remained stable from 2007 to 2017, the number of abortions at more than 21 weeks declined (P = .02). The decline in number of abortions at more than 21 weeks was steeper for nonresidents (31/year; Β = −31.3; P = .02) compared with Georgia residents (14/year; Β = −13.9; P = .06). Conclusions. Findings suggest that implementation of Georgia’s 22-week gestational age limit has effectively limited access to needed abortion services in Georgia and beyond.

AbstractThe geographical distribution of the two species of the genusParachaenichthysis allopatric and restricted to the inner shelves of South Georgia–South Sandwich Islands (P. georgianus) and South Orkney Islands–South Shetland Islands (P. charcoti). To evaluate the consistency between the geographical patterns of adult distribution and early life history traits ofP. charcoti, sagittal otoliths were used to estimate growth rate and pelagic duration in larvae and juveniles of this species collected in the Bransfield Strait in winter and summer, respectively. Individual age was determined through microincrement counts, assuming they were daily increments. The Gompertz model was fitted to age–length estimates, providing a mean growth rate of 0.22 mm day-1estimated for 28–204-day-old individuals. Larval hatching was spread over a relatively wide period, lasting from July throughout September. The pelagic larval duration ofP. charcotiwas about six months based on ageing data of larvae and juveniles, as reported forP. georgianusfrom South Georgia. The strong dependence of larvae on the inshore habitat may hamper their dispersal at large spatial scale limiting the connectivity among distant populations, providing clues to interpret the present geographical distribution of the two species.

At Krymsk Experiment Breeding Station of VIR, as a result of collecting, studying, and selective use of myrobalan plum genetic diversity, the intraspecific taxonomy of the species Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. was clarified. Donors of traits significant for breeding were identified and, with their use, adaptable cultivars of myrobalan plum, Russian plum and clonal rootstocks of stone fruit plants were developed.Intraspecific classification of P. cerasifera is proposed, with the identified subspecies:subsp. cerasifera (typical myrobalan plum);subsp. orientalis (M. Pop.) Erem. et Garcov. (Oriental myrobalan plum);and subsp. macrocarpa Erem. et Garcov. (large-fruited myrobalan plum).Within subsp. P. cerasifera subsp. macrocarpa, varieties were identified:var. macrocarpa (typical, or Krymsk);var. georgica Erem. et Garcov. (Georgian);var. iranica (Koval.) Erem. et Garcov. (Iranian);var. nairica (Koval.) Erem. et Garcov. (Armenian);var. pissardii Carr. (Pissard);and var. taurica (Kost.) Erem. et Garcov. (Taurida). The participation of myrobalan plum in the origin of spp. P. brigantiaca Vill., P. cocomilia Tem., and P. spinosa L. was traced. Involvement of large-fruited myrobalan plum in hybridization with blackthorn contributed to the manifestation of an exceptional polymorphism among the varieties of the hybridogenic species P. domestica L. (P. cerasifera × P. spinosa). As a result of hybridization between myrobalan plum and Chinese plum varieties, a new cultigen species emerged – Russian plum (× P. rossica Erem.). By now, 127 cultivars of this species and 7 clonal rootstocks for stone fruit crops have been developed. These cultivars and clonal rootstocks are zoned for Russia and a number of other countries.

The debates over the 2003 reauthorization of Head Start highlighted a controversy about the devolution of federal early education policy. At the center of the debate is the concern that state control of early education programs will reduce the quality and effectiveness of federal support for children living in poverty, and their families. The current fragmentation of early education policy, with both federal Head Start programs and state-subsidized prekindergarten programs operating in close proximity, presents an opportunity to compare the programs’ quality and effectiveness within a region of common support. In this study, propensity score techniques were used to match a probability sample of Head Start participants in Georgia with a group of children who were eligible for Head Start but who attended the state prekindergarten program in Georgia. The two groups were statistically similar at the beginning of their preschool year on three of four direct assessments (p < .05), but by the beginning of kindergarten the children attending the state prekindergarten program posted higher developmental outcomes on five of six direct assessments (p < .05) and 14 of 17 ratings by kindergarten teachers (p < .05). This study indicates that economically disadvantaged children who attended Georgia’s universal prekindergarten entered kindergarten at least as well prepared as similar children who attended the Head Start program.

Turovo Atsimainymo cerkvei kadaise priklausė garsioji XI a. ant pergamento rašyta Turovo evangelija (Vilnius, Lietuvos MA biblioteka, F 19-1), kurios paraštėse surašyti LDK etmono Konstantino Ostrogiškio šiai cerkvei skirti 1508 ir 1513 metų dovanojimo aktai. Šio originalo XVI a. vidurio nuorašas paliko Supraslio vienuolyną 1830–1836 metais, o 1899 metais jis jau saugotas Sankt Peterburge Archeografijos komisijoje.

Objectives Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disproportionately strikes African American women. Social support can potentially reduce disease impact. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between organ damage and depression in African American women and how social support influences this relationship. Methods We used a mixed methods design, analyzing self-reported data on lupus-related organ damage, depression, and social support in 437 African American women with SLE recruited in the Georgians Organized Against Lupus (GOAL) cohort. Moreover, we conducted interviews among 15 GOAL participants to gather patients' perspectives about the role of social support in people who live with lupus. Results We found a significant association between organ damage and depression ( r = 0.163, p = 0.001), as well as between depression and social support ( F = 17.574, p < 0.001). The quantitative analysis did not render social support as a significant moderator in the organ damage–depression relationship. Interviews, however, revealed that African American women with the most severe organ damage have the greatest need for support. Conclusions Social support is a key resource for lupus patients with high disease burden. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of monitoring depressive symptoms in this population and developing interventions aimed to increase social support available to lupus patients.

Synchronic flashing in fireflies is a precisely timed behavior. This is a potentially useful tool to study sensory processing, the location and circuitry of the flash oscillator, and neuroeffector processing and coupling. Synchronic flashing, once thought to occur only in Southeast Asian fireflies, has recently been shown to be a prominent part of the behavior of a North American Photinus and Photuris species. To gain insights into the mechanisms of synchronic timing in fireflies, we compared spontaneous flashing and entrainment flashing in Photuris frontalis LeConte, a synchronic firefly found in Georgia's Coastal Plain, to analogous flashing in Pteroptyx malaccae Olivier, a synchronic firefly found in Malaysia. The timing of spontaneously produced flashes and entrainment flashes was recorded by photometry. Artificially produced, rhythmic stimulus flashes were used to induce a counterfeit synchrony (between subject fireflies and an LED), i.e., flash entrainment. We found that the spontaneously produced interflash intervals were repeated with a high degree of precision in P. frontalis and P. malaccae. However, the pattern of flashing was different during spontaneous flashing and flash entrainment. An isolated P. frontalis flashed intermittently during spontaneously flashing and entrainment flashing. Flash entrainment in P. frontalis started with an initial inhibition and then steady-state entrainment occurred with a fixed delay. In contrast, an isolated P. malaccae flashed continuously during spontaneous flashing and entrainment flashing. No initial inhibition occurred at the start of entrainment, and there was a gradual change in interflash interval until steady-state entrainment occurred at a fixed delay. We think that in-depth studies of the flash activities of different synchronic firefly species, including the locally available P. frontalis, could help our understanding of rhythmic temporal coordination of behavior by the nervous system.

Objectives: Motivational interviewing, a client-centered intervention method focused on enhancing intrinsic motivation for behavior change, shows a positive impact on children’s weight status (ie, stabilizing or slowing down weight gain as a child grows). We evaluated the impact of a training program on knowledge and adoption of evidence-based obesity prevention counseling strategies among counselors from Georgia’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Methods: Between July 2014 and September 2015, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Strong4Life program provided 388 WIC counselors in Georgia with a 2-hour training session on motivational interviewing, patient-centered counseling, and goal setting for obesity prevention. We evaluated the training using (1) self-administered pre- and post-training surveys that assessed knowledge of counseling strategies, (2) post-training observation of counseling interactions, and (3) a review of behavior change goal quality pre- and post-training in a random sample of 200 WIC client charts. Results: In a comparison of pre-training knowledge with immediate post-training knowledge among 388 counselors, 81% vs 91% ( P < .001) knew that, to be effective, goals must be important to clients, and 66% vs 94% ( P < .001) knew the 5 A’s (assess, advise, agree, assist, arrange) of counseling. Knowledge improvements were sustained at 3 months post-training. We observed no improvements in the quality of chart-documented behavior goals. Conclusions: WIC nutrition counselors in Georgia were aware of evidence-based counseling strategies but did not consistently apply them. The training program was helpful, but time and additional support are needed to adopt new practices.

We investigate a nonrelativistic version of Georgi’s “unparticle physics.” We define the unnucleus as a field in a nonrelativistic conformal field theory. Such a field is characterized by a mass and a conformal dimension. We then consider the formal problem of scatterings to a final state consisting of a particle and an unnucleus and show that the differential cross-section, as a function of the recoil energy received by the particle, has a power-law singularity near the maximal recoil energy, where the power is determined by the conformal dimension of the unnucleus. We argue that unlike the relativistic unparticle, which remains a hypothetical object, the unnucleus is realized, to a good approximation, in nuclear reactions involving emission of a few neutrons, when the energy of the final-state neutrons in their center-of-mass frame lies in the range between about 0.1 MeV and 5 MeV. Combining this observation with the known universal properties of fermions at unitarity in a harmonic trap, we predict a power-law behavior of an inclusive cross-section in this kinematic regime. We verify our predictions with previous effective field theory and model calculations of the 6He(p,pα)2n, 3H(π−,γ)3n, and 3H(μ−,νμ)3n reactions and discuss opportunities to measure unnuclei at radioactive beam facilities.

Karunanithi, Shanker, John Georgiou, Milton P. Charlton, and Harold L. Atwood. Imaging of calcium in Drosophila larval motor nerve terminals. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 3465–3467, 1997. Calcium measurements in the presynaptic terminal are essential in the investigation of mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter release. To enhance the genetic analysis of secretory mechanisms, we have developed Ca2+ imaging techniques for Drosophila larval motor nerve terminals. We studied Ca2+ signals in “big” (type Ib) and “small” (type Is) boutons that innervate ventral longitudinal muscles 6 and 7 in each abdominal segment of Canton-S (CS)-strain 3rd instar larvae. The indicator fluo-3 in conjunction with confocal microscopy was used to detect stimulus-dependent changes in [Ca2+]i. The Ca2+ signals were reliable and reproducible, and the resting fluorescence remained constant throughout the experiments. The Ca2+ signals increased with stimulus frequency from 5 to 20 Hz for both bouton types. No significant differences in the Ca2+ signals were seen between the two bouton types at 5 and 20 Hz, but there was a difference at 10 Hz. The decay of the Ca2+ signal was more prolonged after 20-Hz stimulation than after 5 and 10 Hz. At the single-synapse level, the secretory efficacy of Is synapses is greater than that of Ib synapses, but our data show that factors other than differences in Ca2+ entry may govern the strength of synaptic transmission.

Objectives The global COVID-19 pandemic has affected various populations differently. We investigated the relationship between socioeconomic determinants of health obtained from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation County Health Rankings and COVID-19 incidence and mortality at the county level in Georgia. Methods We analyzed data on COVID-19 incidence and case-fatality rates (CFRs) from the Georgia Department of Public Health from March 1 through August 31, 2020. We used repeated measures generalized linear mixed models to determine differences over time in Georgia counties among quartile health rankings of health outcomes, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment. Results COVID-19 incidence per 100 000 population increased across all quartile county groups for all health rankings (range, 23.1-51.6 in May to 688.4-1062.0 in August). COVID-19 CFRs per 100 000 population peaked in April and May (range, 3312-6835) for all health rankings, declined in June and July (range, 827-5202), and increased again in August (range, 1877-3310). Peak CFRs occurred later in counties with low health rankings for health behavior and clinical care and in counties with high health rankings for social and economic factors and physical environment. All interactions between the health ranking quartile variables and month were significant ( P < .001). County-level Gini indices were associated with significantly higher rates of COVID-19 incidence ( P < .001) but not CFRs. Conclusions From March through August 2020, COVID-19 incidence rose in Georgia’s counties independent of health rankings categorization. Differences in time to peak CFRs differed at the county level based upon key health rankings. Public health interventions should incorporate unique strategies to improve COVID-19–related patient outcomes in these environments.

Background:Golimumab is a tumor necrosis inhibitor (TNFi) approved for the treatment of axial SpA (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), both falling under the Spondyloarthritis (SpA) domain. Real-world data regarding its effect on work productivity (WP) and activity impairment (AI) are limitedObjectives:To assess the impact of golimumab on WP and AI over 12 months of treatment in patients with SpA, overall, and in the axSpA and PsA subpopulationsMethods:A 12-month non-interventional, multicenter, prospective study performed in the routine clinical care. Data were collected at baseline (BL: prior to treatment onset), 3, 6 and 12 months. Adult work-active consented patients with axSpA [ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or non-radiographic axSpA (nr-axSpA)] or PsA, newly initiated on golimumab as per approved label, were concequetively enrolled by 20 sites. Patients prior in >1 biologic agent, or switched from another TNFi due to primary non-response or safety were excluded. WP and AI was assessed with the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment: Specific Health Problem (WPAI:SHP) instrumentResults:Between Apr-2017 and May-2018, 121 (51: PsA, 70: axSpA) eligible patients (mean age: 45.4 years; 49.6% males; 69.0% overweight/obese; median disease duration: 11.3 months), (Figure 1), were enrolled. Median study duration participation: 11.9 months. Overall, 60.3% of the patients had previously received disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and 16.5% biologics. At BL, the mean (standard deviation: SD) DAS28-ESR of the SpA population and PsA and axSpA subpopulations was 4.0 (1.3), 4.5 (1.2), and 3.6 (1.2), while the mean (SD) BASDAI score of patients with axSpA was 5.6 (1.9). At BL 94.1 and 96.7% of the SpA population reported WP loss and AI due to their SpA respectively, and at 3 months 87.3, and 88.0% respectively. In SpA population, the median BL WP loss and AI were 70.0% and 65.0% and decreased by a median of 31.4% and 40.0% at 3 months, by 44.2% and 40.0% at 6 months and by 50.0% and 50.0% at 12 months, respectively (Table 1). Improvements in WP loss and AI were noted in patients with PsA, axSpA, AS and nr-axSpA (Table 1). 12-month golimumab retention rate: 91.7%. SummaryObjectives: To assess the impact of introducing a new Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) on: (i) Medical Imaging work processes; and (ii) turnaround times (TATs) for x-ray and CT scan orders initiated in the Emergency Department (ED).Methods: We employed a mixed method study design comprising: (i) semi-structured interviews with Medical Imaging Department staff; and (ii) retrospectively extracted ED data before (March/ April 2010) and after (March/April 2011 and 2012) the introduction of a new PACS/RIS. TATs were calculated as: processing TAT (median time from image ordering to examination) and reporting TAT (median time from examination to final report). Results: Reporting TAT for x-rays decreased significantly after introduction of the new PACS/RIS; from a median of 76 hours to 38 hours per order (p<.0001) for patients discharged from the ED, and from 84 hours to 35 hours (p<.0001) for patients admitted to hospital. Medical Imaging staff reported that the changeover to the new PACS/RIS led to gains in efficiency, particularly regarding the accessibility of images and patient-related information. Nevertheless, assimilation of the new PACS/RIS with existing Departmental work processes was considered inadequate and in some instances unsafe. Issues highlighted related to the synchronization of work tasks (e.g., porter arrangements) and the material set up of the work place (e.g., the number and location of computers). Conclusions: The introduction of new health IT can be a “double-edged sword” providing improved efficiency but at the same time introducing potential hazards affecting the effectiveness of the Medical Imaging Department.Citation: Georgiou A, Prgomet M, Lymer S, Hordern A, Ridley4 L, Westbrook J.The impact of a health IT changeover on Medical Imaging Department work processes and turnaround times: a mixed method study. Abstract Brain metastasis (BrM) is the most common form of brain cancer, characterized by neurologic disability and an abysmal prognosis. Unfortunately, our understanding of the biology underlying human BrMs remains rudimentary. Here, we present an integrative analysis of >100,000 malignant and non-malignant cells from 15 human parenchymal BrMs, generated by single-cell transcriptomics, mass cytometry, and complemented with mouse model- and in silico approaches. Specific single-cell interrogation of metastatic tumor cells provides a framework of 8 functional cell programs that coexist or anticorrelate. Collectively, these programs delineate two functional BrM archetypes, that co-exist within each metastatic tumor, one proliferative and the other inflammatory, that are evidently shaped through tumor-immune interactions. Our study provides a foundation to understand the molecular basis of BrM in patients with tumor cell-intrinsic and host environmental traits. For more details please refer to the original study: H. Background:Despite the increased incidence of influenza infection in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, vaccination coverage has been shown to be suboptimal. Prospective data regarding the current rate and predictors of influenza vaccination adherence in RA patients are limited. Objectives:To calculate the current rate and predictors of influenza vaccination in a real-life, prospective, longitudinal RA cohort. Methods:Data regarding demographics, disease characteristics, treatments and co-morbidities from a multi-center, longitudinal cohort of Greek RA patients were collected at baseline and ~ 3 years later. Disease and patient characteristics were compared between patients with at least one influenza vaccine administration and non-vaccinated ones, during the 3 year follow-up period. Results:From a cohort of 1,569 RA patients, 1,406 with available vaccination data at baseline and 3 years later (mean interval: 2.9 years) were included; (women: 80.4%, mean age: 61.8 years, mean disease duration: 9.7 years, RF and/or anti-CCP positive: 50.4%, mean DAS-28 = 3.33, mean HAQ: 0.44, bDMARD use: 44.8%). At baseline, 54.2% of patients reported influenza vaccination in the past (31.8% during the previous season), while during the 3 year follow-up period, 81% had ≥1 influenza vaccinations (p=<0.001). Patients who received ≥1 influenza vaccine were older (63.5 vs. 54.7 years, p<0.001), were more likely to be seropositive (59.2% vs. 45.2%, p<0.001), had higher HAQ (0.46 vs. 0.36, p=0.02) and BMI (27.7 vs. 26.9, p=0.02) at baseline, more likely to be treated with bDMARDs (46.8% vs. 36.4%, p<0.001) and more likely to have chronic lung disease (9.7% vs. 5.3%, p=0.02), dyslipidemia (36.4% vs. 24.2%, p<0.001), hypertension (46.1% vs. 29.2%, p<0.001) and to report vaccination against influenza the previous season before baseline evaluation (34.9% vs. 18.2%, p<0.001). By multivariate analysis, history of influenza vaccination during the last season before baseline (OR=1.87, CI: 1.27-2.74, p=0.001), bDMARD treatment (OR=1.51, CI: 1.07-2.13, p=0.018) and age (OR=1.05, CI: 1.04-1.06, p<0.001) were independent predictors of influenza vaccination. Conclusion:In this ongoing, longitudinal, prospective, real-life RA cohort study, a significant increase in the influenza vaccination coverage was noted (from 53% to 81%). Influenza vaccination was independently associated with recent history of influenza vaccination, older age, and bDMARD treatment.Acknowledgments:Supported by grants from the Greek Rheumatology Society and Professional Association of Rheumatologists.Disclosure of Interests:Konstantinos Thomas: None declared, Argyro Lazarini: None declared, Evripidis Kaltsonoudis: None declared, Alexandros Drosos: None declared, ARGYRO REPA: None declared, Prodromos Sidiropoulos: None declared, Kalliopi Fragkiadaki: None declared, Maria Tektonidou Grant/research support from: AbbVie, MSD, Novartis and Pfizer, Consultant of: AbbVie, MSD, Novartis and Pfizer, Petros Sfikakis Grant/research support from: Grant/research support from Abvie, Novartis, MSD, Actelion, Amgen, Pfizer, Janssen Pharmaceutical, UCB, Panagiota Tsatsani: None declared, Sousana Gazi: None declared, Pelagia Katsimbri: None declared, Dimitrios Boumpas: None declared, Evangelia Argyriou: None declared, Kyriaki Boki: None declared, Gerasimos Evangelatos: None declared, Alexios Iliopoulos: None declared, Konstantina Karagianni: None declared, Lazaros Sakkas: None declared, Konstantinos Melissaropoulos: None declared, Panagiotis Georgiou: None declared, Eleftheria Grika: None declared, PANAYIOTIS VLACHOYIANNOPOULOS: None declared, Theodoros Dimitroulas: None declared, Alexandros Garyfallos Grant/research support from: MSD, Aenorasis SA, Speakers bureau: MSD, Novartis, gsk, Constantinos Georganas: None declared, Periklis Vounotrypidis: None declared, Konstantinos Ntelis: None declared, Maria Areti: None declared, George D Kitas: None declared, Dimitrios Vassilopoulos: None declared

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are highly represented among oviductal epithelial cell (OEC) plasma membrane proteins (Sostaric et al. 2006 J. Proteome Res. 5, 3029–3027); their abundance increases in oviductal fluid in response to the presence of spermatozoa (Georgiou et al. 2005 Mol. Cell. Proteomics 4, 1785–1796), and they are capable of binding directly to spermatozoa (Boilard et al. 2004 Biol. Reprod. 71, 1879–1889). As a result of these observations, a role for HSPs in prolonging the functional life of spermatozoa in the oviduct prior to fertilization has been proposed. Poor fertility rates are often observed when fresh ram semen stored in conventional extenders is used for cervical AI (Salamon and Maxwell 2000 Anim. Reprod. Sci. 62, 77–111). This is due, in part, to extenders being unable to maintain the functional life of ram spermatozoa to the same extent as the oviduct. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the effect of supplementing extenders with the HSPs, HSC70 and HSP70, on the maintenance of ram sperm function during storage. Eight freshly collected ram semen ejaculates were split and diluted in the extenders, INRA96 and RSD-1, to 25 106 spermatozoa mL–1, either alone (control) or supplemented with HSC70, HSP70, or α-tubulin (protein with a molecular weight similar to that of the two HSPs). The final concentration of protein in each case was 4 µg mL–1, and the samples were stored at 17C for 48 h. At 1 h, 6 h, 24 h, and 48 h, the viability and DNA integrity of the stored spermatozoa was determined using the live and dead stains, SYBR-14 and ethidium homodimer, and the Sperm-Ovis-Halomax kit, respectively. In each case, the mean percentage (%) of viable and DNA-fragmented (DF) spermatozoa was determined and log-transformed prior to analysis using factorial ANOVA. Statistical significance was defined as P < 0.05. In INRA96, but not RSD-1, the beneficial effect of protein supplementation on the % of viable spermatozoa observed during storage was significant (P < 0.001). Most noteworthy was INRA96 supplemented with HSC70, which maintained the % of viable spermatozoa observed during storage significantly (P < 0.001) better than INRA96 alone. Protein supplementation had no significant effect on the % of DF spermatozoa observed during storage. However, the % of DF spermatozoa observed increased significantly (P < 0.001) during storage, irrespective of the presence or absence of protein. On the basis of these findings, it is not implausible to suggest that supplementing the commercially available INRA96 extender with HSC70 would improve the fertility rates observed following cervical AI using stored ram semen. Furthermore, the increase in the incidence of DNA-fragmented spermatozoa observed during storage offers a potential explanation as to why poor fertility rates are often observed when ram semen stored in conventional extenders is used for cervical AI.

Abstract Tumour progression consists of various stages including migration to the surrounding tissues, leading to metastasis [1]. In this work, we investigate the multiscale quantitative characteristics of the spatial organization and migration of cancer in 3D cultures. For this study, we combined 3D cell culture experiments of Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) cells, hybrid spatiotemporal models, and longitudinal RNA-sequencing data analysis. The experiments included two experimental conditions; simple growth experiments, and experiments of growth in presence of the migrastatic drug Paclitaxel. The spatial distributions of the cells enabled us to calibrate and validate a hybrid Keller-Segel model, incorporated into a novel computational framework capable of interpreting the relation between morphological patterns and the underlying mechanisms of cancer growth [2]. The RNA-seq data included different time-points with and without treatment. The results suggested that cancer cells exhibited biased movement towards the bottom of the space, a movement that was inhibited in the presence of Paclitaxel. The calibrated model was able to describe the overall characteristics of the experimental observations, and suggested that cancer cells exhibited chemotactic migration and cell accumulation, as well as random motion throughout the period of development. The spatial pattern analysis revealed transient, non-random spatial distributions of cancer cells that consisted of clustered patterns across a wide range of neighbourhood distances, as well as dispersion for larger distances. The RNA-seq data exhibited coherence with the chemotactic migration hypothesis of the mathematical model, indicating significant under-representation of the Gene Ontology (GO) terms related to chemotactic migration in presence of the migrastatic drug. Overall, this study provided an insightful quantitative characterization of the spatiotemporal organization and progression of TNBC cells in 3D cultures. We anticipate that these developments will enable us to expand our studies to more realistic conditions, including the introduction of heterogeneic cell populations. Background:The VEDOSS study has recently indicated that more than 80% of patients affected by Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP) with specific SSc auto-antibodies and capillaroscopy changes satisfied ACR/EULAR 2013 criteria within 5 years. These data suggest that there is a window of opportunity for early detection of SSc in these patients. Objectives:Here we aimed to determine whether sera, skin biopsies and skin fibroblasts cultured from these patients showed any biomarker sign of SSc.Methods:Fifty-nine at risk patients identified by having RP and SSc auto-antibodies or capillaroscopy pattern (or both) were enrolled in the Kennedy national inception cohort. Sera were tested for IFN inducible chemokines (CXCL-9,10 and 11 and CCL2, 8 and 19) and biomarker of extracellular matrix turnover (ELF test), all previously shown to be increased in SSc. Further, two 3mm skin biopsies were taken from the forearms from 3 ACA+ve (anti-centromere antibodies), 3 SCL70+ve patients. One biopsy was subjected to histology analysis, including haematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistological staining for Collagen Type 1, alpha-SMA, Caveolin 1 and CD31 as endothelial marker. The other biopsy was used to explant fibroblasts cultures. mRNA and protein were isolated from primary fibroblasts and processed for RT-qPCR and western blotting analyses. Results:Sera from at risk patients showed overall higher IFN inducible chemokines and ELF test (P<0.05) with bimodal distribution among patients. Skin biopsies from both ACA or SCL70+ve patients showed decreased number of CD31+ cells, increased number of myofibroblasts and increased collagen bundles within the dermis, as usually seen in SSc, compared to healthy controls. In vitro, fibroblasts from both ACA or SCL70+ve patients showed average 10-fold higher collagen mRNA levels and 31-fold increased collagen protein levelscompared to healthy control fibroblasts. Furthermore, fibroblasts from ACA or SCL70+ve patients showed limited TGF-beta induced increase in collagen and SMA expression, similar to SSc fibroblasts. Conclusion:Although pilot in nature, this study suggests that patients “at risk” already show biomarker signs of SSc both in their sera, at skin biopsy and fibroblast level. Longitudinal studies on patients at this stage of pre-clinical disease may inform on the stratification strategies for imminent progression to clinical manifestations, and offer both insights on pathogenesis of clinical signs and a window of opportunity for delaying the onset clinical intervention trials.Disclosure of Interests:rebecca ross: None declared, Ioanna Georgiou: None declared, Antonio Carriero: None declared, Giuseppina Abignano: None declared, Chris Wasson: None declared, Gemma Migneco: None declared, Ariane Herrick: None declared, Christopher Denton Grant/research support from: GlaxoSmithKline, CSL Behring, and Inventiva, Consultant of: Medscape, Roche-Genentech, Actelion, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi Aventis, Inventiva, CSL Behring, Boehringer Ingelheim, Corbus Pharmaceuticals, Acceleron, Curzion and Bayer, Francesco Del Galdo: None declared
