Serendipity has always played a role in research, and today the availability of digitised newspapers through Trove offers new opportunities for chance discoveries. A couple of years ago, Glenn R. Cooke — then Research Curator of Queensland Heritage at the Queensland Art Gallery — referred me to a snippet from The Queenslander of 15 October 1892, where the Melbourne correspondent writes: My attention was recently drawn to ‘Drifting’, a novel by a Queensland lady who uses the nom de plume of ‘Ellerton Gay.’ She lived, I believe, for eighteen years in Toowoomba, and is the wife of Mr. J. Watts-Grimes, who is well known in squatting circles. She has lived in England six years, and there she has embalmed her memories of the Queensland which is so dear to her. ‘Drifting’ is much admired here. ‘What's in a name?’ asks the title of one of Ellerton Gay's short stories. The pseudonym, which was evidently an open secret in her lifetime, has subsequently obscured ‘Ellerton Gay’ and her creator, Emma Watts Grimes, from the view of literary historians: Patrick Buckridge and I, for example, overlooked her in our historical survey of literature in Queensland, By the book (2007). Until very recently, the AustLit Database listed her as male, with no further biographical details, and — despite its recent facsimile republication of her novel, Drifting under the Southern Cross (1890) — the British Library fails to make the link between Ellerton Gay and Emma Watts Grimes in its catalogue entry. The reissue of this novel, justifiably ‘much admired’ in its own time, suggests that its elusive author is worth a reappraisal. Since Ellerton Gay's oeuvre draws extensively on the lived experience of Emma Watts Grimes and her extended family, this article provides a biographical sketch before discussing the fictional works.

The main objectives of this study are to analyze and understand: (1) the general constructions of the Prophet Muhammad in the descriptions of Western writers; and (2) Armstrong's description of the Prophet Muhammad. This study is library research that uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-critical method. Data were collected by reading various biographical literature on Prophet Muhammad from Western writers, which were grouped into three criteria: orientalist writers, revisionist writers, and popular writers. The results of the study show that: (1) there is a dynamic dialectic in the description of the figure of the Prophet Muhammad by Western writers, both from orientalist circles, such as W. Montgomery Watt, David Samuel Margoliouth, Edward Said, revisionists such as Patricia Crone, Michael Cook, Fred M. Donner, and popular writers like Karen Armstrong. This dynamic shows that the effort to understand the figure of the Prophet Muhammad is an important effort to understand Islam in Western society; and (2) Armstrong's description as the author of popular religious studies books about the figure of the Prophet Muhammad; made a major contribution to reducing various misunderstandings about Islam and the figure of the Prophet Muhammad in the eyes of Western society.

The late Patricia Crone (d. 2015) was one of the most provocative scholars ofearly Islam. She is infamous for Hagarism: The Making of the Islamic World(1977), which she co-authored with Michael Cook. That she has disavowedsome of its more skeptical conclusions may surprise many of her fiercest critics,as well as those revisionists who still invoke them. This current volume,however, demonstrates that while she has not disavowed any of her skepticalapproaches to the study of this field, to her great credit she remained open torevising her views as new evidence presented itself. Reprints comprise mostof this volume, although two chapters have not previously been published.Even the reprints, however, were selected, arranged, and in some cases revisedby Crone herself.
All of the articles are tied together by subject matter and methodology.They focus on the mushrikūn (lit. associators), whom she calls “Qur’ānic pagans,”and for the most part seeks to reconstruct their religion, particularlyduring the Makkan period. She takes as her point of departure G. R. Hawting’sThe Idea of Idolatry and the Emergence of Islam (1999), which argues thatthe mushrikūn were monotheists and not idolaters (another common translationof the term). In hoping to show that he was mistaken, Crone was promptedto read the Qur’an systematically and, in so doing, discovered that these peoplewere not the pagans depicted in the Hadith, sīrah, tafsīr, or Ibn al-Kalbi’sBook of Idols ...

This thesis analyses the impact of life experience on Irish settlement patterns in
colonial Victoria. It represents the first scholarly analysis of a settler farmer in the Pyalong
district. The thesis focuses on how Irish settler Patrick Cooke adapted successfully to life in
the Antipodes and how he forged a relationship with the land on which he settled. The
significance of the study goes beyond one individual’s experience of late-nineteenth colonial
settlement. With emphasis on the spatial connection between people and place, it provides new
insights into the relationship of individuals to the geographical space they inhabited during
settlement in inland Victoria.
The thesis draws on extensive Irish and Australian research data, to locate Cooke’s life
in the context of Australia and Ireland, the places in which he lived. By focusing on an underresearched
rural district in central Victoria it furthers historical understanding of colonial
settlement and shows how Irish immigrants redefined themselves and gave meaning to their
lives in their new land.

This chapter describes Negro recreation and sports in Illinois in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1847, a ten-mile foot race in Chicago was witnessed by more than 1,000 spectators. The event was won by a Canadian. Nine years later, a Negro represented Cook County at the Alton Convention of Colored Citizens of Illinois. In 1854, a skating match took place on the canal at Elmira between Patrick Brown and George Tate, a colored man. In 1874, the Chicago Evening Journal announced that “the Napoleons, a colored baseball club of St. Louis, are coming to this city to play the Uniques, also colored, for the colored championship.” Pedestrianism also interested the Negroes in the early days of Illinois. This chapter looks at Negro participation in various sports and recreational activities such as racing, cycling, cricket, baseball, football, tennis, and boxing.

The Introduction describes the way in which the volume originated and briefly surveys the chapters contained in it. Four chapters (by Joseph Witztum, Patricia Crone, Gerald Hawting, and Michael Cook) originate from papers delivered at the conference ‘Islam and its Past: Jahiliyya and Late Antiquity in the Qurʾan and Tradition’. The other four chapters (by Devin Stewart, Nicolai Sinai, Angelika Neuwirth, and Iwona Gajda) were not presented at this conference. All the chapters are concerned directly or indirectly with Islamic revelation, and for the most part with the Qurʾan. We live in a time when the study of the Qurʾan has been making a remarkable comeback after spending a generation on the backburner. This volume will give the interested reader a broad survey of what has been happening in the field and concrete illustrations of some of the more innovative lines of research that have recently been pursued.

“I have not tested this—it is secret recipe!” Sergei Filippov says, as he tends to a pot of what look like meatballs simmering on his small stove, and his kitchen fills with their aroma. “I don’t know if it will be any good. If not, we will have fish!” There are seventeen kinds of fish in the Barguzin River, Sergei tells me, and he has three varieties on hand tonight, in case his secret beef recipe fails to please. “Omul, sig, and—how do you say in English?—carp? I cook often. My wife is a teacher, she works a lot. I like to cook, but not all the time!” Sergei may well be the only person in his town who speaks more than a few words of English, and he didn’t learn it in school. He’s taught himself. “I began to learn English from an American friend of mine,” Sergei says. “Patricia. She came to stay with us. She did not speak Russian. I did not speak English. We began writing to each other, in both languages, side by side, on one piece of paper.” Sergei’s round face and wavy, dark hair carry hints of both Buryat and Russian, but mostly they carry a warm smile and a soft and welcoming demeanor not immediately found in many of his countrymen. He’s the first Russian I’ve met whom I felt immediately drawn to. We’ve come fifty kilometers up the Barguzin River from Baikal to stay with Sergei and his wife, Tania, here in the town of Barguzin. Through Andrei, we’re paying them for dinner, breakfast, and a night’s lodging in their small apartment. But I get the feeling that if he could afford it, Sergei might pay us for the visit. Sergei’s world barely even reaches Baikal, much less far beyond. But in this tiny town, he is a traveler. A few times a year, Andrei arrives with people like us, from America, Europe, Japan. And with each visit, Sergei’s world expands as he learns a bit more about life beyond Barguzin, beyond Baikal, beyond Russia.
