The issue of accessibility to artworks in museums for visually impaired people (VIP) is frequently raised by associations and museums. Some works, such as medieval tapestries, by their very nature, cannot be touched and are often not accessible through audio-description. Moreover, the manual creation of tactile representations is costly and complex, limiting their availability in museums. The Apocalypse Tapestry and the Bayeux Tapestry are two iconic examples. These large-scale artefacts, measuring 104 m by 4.5 cm meters for the former and 70 m by 50 cm for the latter, have been the focus of numerous studies over the years. Although the Château d'Angers offers guided tours adapted for blind and partially sighted visitors, these remain limited and require the involvement of several people. At the Bayeux Tapestry Museum, there is a tactile discovery area, but only three of the 58 scenes have been adapted into tactile mock copies. This work is motivated by the challenges of inclusion in museums and aims to make the perception of medieval tapestries accessible to as many people as possible. We propose an innovative methodology for the semi-automatic creation of 3D objects from simple photographs. In this manuscript, we explore the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence tools to quickly and affordably create 3D-printed bas-reliefs. Specifically, we study segmentation algorithms like Mask R-CNN and image-generating neural networks such as generative adversarial networks (GANs). In addition to generating 3D prints that enable tactile exploration of artefacts, we also evaluate the relevance of these representations through experimentation with VIPs. Overall, our goal is to improve the museum experience for blind and partially sighted visitors by enhancing their autonomy in cultural spaces and increasing their satisfaction and motivation to discover these cultural treasures

Повний текст джерелаLes jeux vidéo excluent les personnes aveugles.

The "Braille Box" is an assistive device, developed by the Perceptive Supplementation Group, for helping visually impaired people access graphic infonnation on a computer screen by tactile perception. The study of the effect of parallelism, computer input devices and bimodal perception shows that these parameters can improve the perfonnance of exploration and fonn recognition. Ln addition, we have developed a model based on Fitts' law, for tracking tasks without visual feedback and a trajectory analysis model, using two-dimension. Fourier transfonn. Moreover, we proposed applications in education (mathematics curve) and recreational area (graphics game: Memory and battleship field). The ultimate goal of this study is that visually impaired people can access infonnation as sighted persons

Visual impairment and blindness are sources of mobility difficulties for the affected people. In orderto lighten the burden of these difficulties, many mobility aids have been imagined, designed, tested, and more or less adopted. Designers of such assistive systems soon run into the complexity of the issue, which stands at the intersection of three domains that are, by themselves, complex: visual impairment, mobility, and perception.Having decided to design an electronic assistive system from the beginning, we tried to step back and analyzed a wide range of blind aids: white canes, mobile electronic devices serving different mobility purposes, urban systems, and systems not primarily designed for mobility. Their diversity helped us analyze assistive systems through several prisms: according to their technical characteristics, their functions, their shape, and their dependence to an infrastructure. Taken individually, each of these approaches quickly shows its limits, but, together, they draw an interesting portrait of the existing devices. Besides these rather classical approaches, we propose a new model for analyzing assistive systems, which relies on the way these systems take place in a person's perception / mobility process. This model has the advantages of being, a priori, relevant forall assistive systems – in spite of their dissimilarity – and meaningful for both evaluation and classification. We have designed and built an electronic mobility aid, called the 2SEES system. Like its predecessor, the SEES system, the 2SEES relies on three platforms: a smart cane, a smartphone, anda cloud computing back-end. The issues of energy consumption and geographical universality, essential for any mobile device, are made explicit and studied. A novelty of the 2SEES resides in its account of reliability issues ; it is thus designed around the complex equilibrium between energy consumption, universality, and reliability. Despite their importance in a system destined to be adopted by end users, these three notions are scarcely visible in the relevant literature. To concurrently enhance robustness and autonomy, we have integrated several sensors and processors in the smart cane, both by introducing redundancy, for fault tolerance, and by integratingheterogeneous sensors, for robustness against the diversity of environments. Two aspects of this equilibrium have been further studied. First, the need for robustness has been highlighted by a study of affinities between obstacle sensors and several types of potential obstacle materials. Secondly, we have tried to develop an energy-efficient indoor localization function that islittle dependent on infrastructures, and therefore easily scalable. This function works with embedded sensors (wheel encoder, inertial measurement unit) and a simplified particle filter, which estimates the position by checking the coherence of trajectories derived from sensor data against themap of the location. In addition to this work on the balance between robustness, energy consumption, and universality, we have developed a novel function, named SO2SEES, which allows communication between usersof the 2SEES and smart objects. This function enables users to ask, in natural language, questions tothe 2SEES, which are answered using information coming from surrounding smart objects. In orderto keep the system simple, users do not formulate their own questions, but are instead invited to pick them in a set of predefined questions, which are proposed by the system according to the nearby objects and the information they offer. This mode of operation shifts the system from a natural language processing artificial intelligence to an expert system working on dynamic and distributed knowledge bases. In this latter configuration, the main issue is the interoperability between the 2SEES and the smart objects and their back-ends that take part in the functionality

We are interested in behavioral "plasticity" of individuals who have been deprived of vision from birth. More specifically, we have studied the manner in which the individual mentally represents the space around them, and the way in which the inidividual benefits from information coming from other senses. The aim of the study consists in understanding if the essential stages for the construction of the mental representations are in operation from an early age, and up to what point behavioral/cerebral plasticity could mitigate this early visual deprivation. Three series of experiments were proposed with participants who were categorized as blind from birth, late blind, sighted and blindfolded, or sighted with eyes open. The first two experiments consisted of a task of mental exploration and of mental comparison of distances. In these two experiments, the participants learned the configuration of a small spatial environment through verbal description or tactile exploration. The third series of experiments was aimed at examining whether the immersion of the individual in the environment would improve their performance. We designed an immersive Virtual Reality system for "3D sound", which allows for the generation of a human scale environment consisting of a spatial distribution of virtual sound sources in which the individual has the capacity to move about. The results suggest that the size of the initial configuration does not have an effect on the treatment of the spatial relations, even though blind from birth participants made more erros with regards to distance evaluation with the smaller sized configuration

The electronic cane « Tom Pouce III » is a vision substitution tool intended to make the movement of the blind user more fluid, helping him to find his way from a distance in a cluttered environment, and also to improve the autonomy and safety of his/her daily movements. The objective of this work is to observe and understand the behavior of users in controlled and reproducible situations close to those of everyday life. For this purpose, five experimental protocols were tested among 12 blind participants with between 2 and 20 years of daily use of Tom Poucce III (comparing the performance with the electronic cane and the simple white cane) as well as among 12 sighted subjects using their sight: locomotor pointing, choice of one passage among several, passability of an opening, navigation in a congested space, navigation over a long period in a moderately congested space. In addition to analyzing the results of the protocols, we also discuss the different cognitive processes and ecological variables involved in the locomotor control of blind subjects. This will allow to explain the limitations and errors in the regulation of the movement coming either from the human or from the tool. We conclude by proposing directions to improve the locomotor control for users of electronic canes
