In 2015 Ross Gibson wrote about the need in the academy for “linguistic explication” of the artwork and creative process, in particular to encourage debate on knowledge that arises from the work. I began my creative practice PhD after spending twenty years as a successful documentary practitioner. When it was time to start writing about my research and the new knowledge, instead of using text I turned to the audiovisual medium as my method of communication. I created “Filming” (2017), which combines the theory-rich mode of academic papers with the audio-visual form of my art, documentary. I called it a “digital paper”. The digital paper form has become an integral part of my PhD. This hybrid creative practice uses my artform medium as my method of communicating Gibson’s “linguistic explication”, rather than using text alone. This report will locate the digital paper within my PhD practice.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to give an account of the methods used for the author's project-based doctoral thesis, Hatred and History. The methodology is offered not as an exemplar, but rather as a case study of an integrated approach where exegesis and creative work are conceived as intertwining explorations of the same research materials. Design/methodology/approach – Hatred and History creatively explores the idea that science and intuition frame our experience of the world in distinct ways, and is expressed across an audio production and a written exegesis. The dyad of scientific and intuitive knowledge is embedded deeply within the production, from the initial choice of subject through the structuring and writing of the script to the techniques employed to write the music. This paper traces the transformation of the dyad from academic construct to creative construct, and should therefore be considered a statement of poetics. Findings – The creative exploration of science and intuition encouraged me to consider the “double articulation” of theory and practice, where poetics ceases to be merely a theory of rhetorical design and is assimilated into a theory of self-knowledge. Originality/value – This paper is offered in the hope that it will be of value to commencing PhD candidates in the creative arts who must navigate the waters between exegesis and creative output for themselves.

Young medical trainees all over the world are encouraged to investigate unknown areas of medicine that need clarification. This often leads them to undertake a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). Being curious, critical, and creative are necessary competences which enable us to engender scientific research within acute (internal) medicine. Worldwide, huge numbers of professionals are pursuing a PhD, with the aim of receiving a ‘Doctor’-title. These PhD trajectories vary distinctly between countries. Since the distances in the scientific world are getting smaller and it is becoming more easy to work with each other across borders, it might be interesting to know what it requires to become an academic ‘doctor’ overseas. Hereby, we provide a concise insight in to the differences between doing PhD in (acute) medicine in the Netherlands and in the UK

INTRODUCTION: This article argues for the benefits of employing the arts-based method known as photovoice. Drawn from a social work PhD project with 12 South Australian exprisoners, this research aimed to better understand the post-release experiences within the context of a rising prison population and high recidivism rates.METHODS: Participants were given a single-use camera and the research question if you had 15 minutes with a policy maker or politician, what would you want to tell them about your experience? Later, the participants’ narratives were combined with the photographs and used to create an art exhibition with the rationale that images are more likely to resonate with people than words alone.FINDINGS: Using photovoice in this way has the potential to create new knowledge through the process of participants constructing and retelling accounts of their experiences via the medium of photography.CONCLUSION: I propose that the process of turning research into praxis through participatory action-based methods such as photovoice can be a positive, empowering experience for the participants and researchers.

In this article, Victoria Hunter explores the concept of the ‘here and now’ in the creation of site-specific dance performance, in response to Doreen Massey's questioning of the fixity of the concept of the ‘here and now’ during the recent RESCEN seminar on ‘Making Space’, in which she challenged the concept of a singular fixed ‘present’, suggesting instead that we exist in a constant production of ‘here and nows’ akin to ‘being in the moment’. Here the concept is applied to an analysis of the author's recent performance work created as part of a PhD investigation into the relationship between the site and the creative process in site-specific dance performance. In this context the notion of the ‘here and now’ is discussed in relation to the concept of dance embodiment informed by the site and the genius loci, or ‘spirit of place’. Victoria Hunter is a Lecturer in Dance at the University of Leeds, who is currently researching a PhD in site-specific dance performance.

This article explores the principles of artistic organization of A. Chekhov's text and their influence on the creative work of the famous Kazakh writer G. Musrepov. The authors of the article identify the main features of the principles of the artistic organization of the text of A. Chekhov’s creative works. Additionally, the main features of the principles of the artistic organization of the text, inherent in the works of G. Musrepov are considered. The article provides a semantic and comparative analysis of the works of the two writers, on the basis of which the authors identify the main “parallels” in the works of writers. The authors, referring to the notion of artistic organization of the text, examine such categories as the main features of the writers' artistic world, plot composition of their works, the use of lexical and semantic, graphic and expressive means, as well as the specificity of spatial and temporal organization of artistic texts. The mentioned categories make up the internal form of the artistic whole of the work. The research methodology is based on the comparative and comparative-typological, as well as semantic methods of research. The authors of the article touch upon the problem of reception of A. Chekhov's work in Kazakhstan. To date little research has been devoted to this topic, so this problem requires comprehensive study and analysis. Reception of creative work from the point of view of bearers of another culture, in comparison with the national literature of Kazakhstan, will highlight and explore new facets of the Russian writer's work. The uniqueness of this study lies in a systematic analysis of the principles of artistic organization of the texts of A. Chekhov and G. Musrepov. The results obtained will be used in the framework of the PhD thesis “Reception of A. Chekhov's Creativity in Kazakhstan”.

Nearly seventy-five years after his death, Konstantin Stanislavsky remains a toweringly influential figure, and many fundamental ideas about acting can be traced back to his practice. In this article, Marc Silberschatz examines the correspondences with, and divergences from, flow theory – the theory surrounding the psychological state associated with ‘being in the zone’ – in Stanislavsky's practice. Although separated by vast differences in social, cultural, and historical context, some significant and increasing correspondences between flow theory and Stanislavsky's practice are revealed and examined. Additionally, divergences from flow theory are identified and interrogated, suggesting that Stanislavsky's reliance on fixed, repeatable performance scores and divided consciousness are direct impediments to the achievement of flow. Marc Silberschatz is a PhD candidate at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is also a professional theatre director whose work has been seen in both the United States and Scotland.

Purpose Dissertations from the University of Novi Sad (UNS) are integrated with the research information system called the current research information system (CRIS) UNS. This paper aims to present a proposal for an extension of this system to enable the storage of student papers as prescribed by PhD study exam obligations. The proposed extension enables preservation and improves discoverability of scientific and technical works produced by students during their PhD studies. Design/methodology/approach An analysis of examination modes in accredited PhD study programs has been conducted. It was noted that students in examination modes verify the obtained results in the form of scientific and technical work. The main idea of this paper is to enable the preservation of those student results and to implement electronic services for retrieving those results by current and future PhD students to empower the development of science. Findings The proposal includes an extension of the CRIS UNS to store and publish student papers as prescribed as a PhD study exam obligation; an extension of the CERIF data model to enable storing of student papers; cataloguing student papers in the MARC 21 format; and a way to represent student papers in the Dublin Core format. Practical implications This paper can be a starting point for initiatives for the creation of institutional, regional, national and international Web portals for searching and browsing papers by PhD students. Social implications This system offers the improvement of cooperation between PhD students from different institutions and countries. Originality/value The paper presents an extension of institutional, national and international current research information system (CRIS) systems which will enable the preservation and improve discoverability of student papers produced during PhD studies. The proposed extension has been verified by its implementation within the CRIS UNS system, which also supports monitoring of the scientific competencies of students based on an automatic evaluation of published scientific results.

The article presents research results on exploring the impact of martial law on research motivation of PhD students of Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A.S. Makarenko majoring in specialty 011 Educational, Pedagogical Sciences. The study was conducted among the first-fourth year PhD students of the 2018-2021 years of admission and involved 22 participants. The results of conducted surveys, observations and interviews proved significant decrease in PhD students’ motivation for research caused by war in Ukraine. These findings were confirmed by the annual report of postgraduate students at the meeting of the Chair of Pedagogy, which demonstrated a significant decrease in their research activity for the second half of the 2021-2022 academic year. The problems affecting research motivation were identified: emotional state deterioration; slow Internet connection; difficulties with research organization (lack of a computer, laptop; impossibility to engage in research work due to lack of necessary living conditions; lack of scientific events in which it would be possible to present the results of one’s research; impossibility of conducting the experiment; destruction of archives; loss of collected material). The ways to improve PhD students’ motivation for research are proposed: strengthening consulting, informational, psychological support for PhD students; involving psychological service in providing PhD students with psychological support; organization of scientific events for approbation of postgraduate students’ research results and providing them with opportunities for creative self-realization; continuing the practice of holding scientific schools for PhD students; changing research topics and research supervisors and so on.

This thesis reflects upon the nature of creativity and participation in the UK public cultural institution. It asks: to what extent is creative agency enabled or disabled within this context? In order to answer this question a qualitative study of Southbank Centre, one of the UK's leading public cultural institutions, has been constructed. The thesis considers the institution in its totality, analysing and interpreting both internal, subjective dimensions and external, public-focused dimensions. An interdisciplinary approach characterises a theoretical and methodological framework that draws upon concepts and methods from sociology, visual culture, museum studies and institutional ethnography. The case study is contextualised through analysis of three key historical examples that provide the preconditions for current perspectives on the relationship between art and work in the public cultural institution: the 1951 Festival of Britain, Artist Placement Group (APG) and the Arts and Crafts Movement. The Southbank case study involves employee interviews, fieldwork observations and the interpretation of cultural objects. These provide the empirical evidence that enables reflection on how creative work and the public are constituted, and how the institution might be seen to exist as a site of struggle. These methods facilitate an assessment of the critical potential of creative work within and around the public cultural institution's self-defined boundaries and the specific historical, discursive and symbolic conditions through which it is enabled or disabled. Although the influence of neoliberal cultural policy cannot be underestimated in this context, the thesis concludes with an alternative suggestion for what the public cultural institution could be. It claims that the discursive tension between artistic and managerial agendas can act as a productive terrain for creative work in its broadest sense.

The body of research presented here represents an important contribution to knowledge in the field of the future of work with particular reference to work facilitated by Information and Communications Technology (ICTs). The work encompasses a number of levels of analysis: the macro level, the organisational level and the workforce level. It has explored previously neglected areas of self-employment, and has contributed to understanding of both corporate and self-employed telework. The submission document is organised as follows: following the list of submitted work the Introduction explores the background to the research area, and then provides a detailed commentary on each piece of submitted work, including clear information on the author's contribution to publications which are co-authored. The Conclusion outlines how the research has added to the existing body of knowledge in the subject fields, and this is followed by a Literature Review which sets the submitted work into the broader context of research on telework and the future of work and employment.

This creative writing PhD thesis consists of a novel and a critical reflective essay. Both articulate a distinctive approach to the challenges of writing genre fiction in the 21st Century that I define as 'Goldendark' - one that actively engages with the ethical and political implications of the field via the specific aesthetic choices made about methodology, content, and form. The Knowing: A Fantasy is a novel written in the High Mimetic style that, through the story of Janey McEttrick, a Scottish-Cherokee musician descended from the Reverend Robert Kirk, a 17th Century Episcopalian minister from Aberfoyle (author of the 1691 monograph, The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies), fictionalises the diasporic translocation of song- and tale-cultures between the Scottish Lowlands and the Southern Appalachians, and is a dramatisation of the creative process. In the accompanying critical reflective essay, 'An Epistemological Enquiry into Creative Process, Form and Genre', I chart the development of my novel: its initial inspiration, my practice-based research, its composition and completion, all informed both by my practice as a storyteller/poet and by my archival discoveries. In the section 'Walking Between Worlds' I articulate my methodology and seek to defend experiential research as a multi-modal approach - one that included long-distance walking, illustration, spoken word performance, ballad-singing and learning an instrument. In 'Framing the Narrative' I discuss matters of form - how I engaged with hyperfictionality and digital technology in destabilising traditional conventions of linear narrative and generic expectation. Finally, in 'Defining Goldendark' I articulate in detail my approach to a new ethical aesthetics of the fantasy genre.

The submission, Ross Sinclair: 20 Years of Real Life consists of seven publications discussed in a critical overview, with three supporting Appendices. Together they document and analyse the diverse outputs of my practice-led research project, Real Life, initiated in 1994. The critical overview argues for the innovative nature of the Real Life Project through its engagement with audiences and demonstrates its contribution to the field of contemporary art practice, across the disciplines of sculpture, painting, performance, installation, critical writing and music. Since the inception of my Real Life project I have explored the agency and impact of the artwork and exhibition in relation to audience exploring new methodologies and in June 2016 was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Published Work at GSA/GU titled, “20 Years of Real Life”. Here I set the project in critical overview around the philosophical paradigms of Barthes, Baudrillard and de Certeau viewed through a contemporary critical framework of Bourriaud, Bishop and Kester. I argue my project represents a unique and idiosyncratic contribution in its own right to these debates when viewed as a single longitudinal project, unique in recent art context. The impact, influence and contribution of this project is viewed in this submission through the prism of the 5 institutional monographic publications on my work as well as 2 contributions to refereed journals and 3 Appendices describing the project output and published writing, two of these appendices alone exceed 400 pages in length. I will continue to explore this project in the wake of the PhD undertaking further research. I have already had informal discussions with several staff with a view to mentoring/assistance/development of PhD's and am giving a Fine Art Research Seminar on the process of the PhD by Published work and I hope this will lead to more confidence and capability in the School of Fine Art.

The main aim of the research presented in this thesis is to inform the design of interactive computer systems for supporting creative knowledge work. Research into creativity and knowledge work has been explored and used to develop a criteria modelling approach. The particular contribution of the author's work is the drawing together of that research and applying the findings to interaction design. The publications were selected on the basis of how well they represent the main outcomes of the work. The journey from prescribing system requirements and design goals to framing the system design process in terms of evaluation criteria may be traced through the papers presented. Interest in creativity and the role of computer technology in creative tasks has recently increased. A number of national initiatives have been set in motion in the LJK, beginning in December 1996 with the Initiative for National Action on Creative Technologies, the Creative Media Initiative: Technology Foresight, Department of Trade and Industry, National Endowment for Science and Technology in the Arts (NESTA) and the People and Computers Programme, of the Engineering & Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). Thus, the author's involvement in creativity research and computer support is proving to be timely. Amongst her recent initiatives is Creativity and Cognition, an international symposium which brings together creative people in the arts with technologists and scientists. The thesis is divided into three parts : themes and outcomes, methodology and case studies. A criteria-based modelling approach is presented which has evolved from earlier models that represent key elements of creativity and knowledge work. A model of creative knowledge work is proposed and categories of criteria identified. Underpinning the main outcomes are the case studies which were carried out in industry/academic collaborative projects. The findings were considered in relation to other studies. The thesis presents an approach to computer systems design and development that directly links the requirements definition to the application of evaluation criteria. These criteria are based upon the characteristics of the cognitive style and working practices of creative knowledge workers.

This doctoral project challenges the conventions of academic enquiry that, by default, still largely shape the procedures of practice-based PhDs. It has been submitted in the form of a ‘thesis by performance’ - a thesis that can only be realized through live readings that present knowledge production as something done in and around bodies and their contexts. The aim has been to reposition institutional and educational knowledge in an intimate, subjective relationship with the body, particularly the researchers own body. The ideas gathered together in this ‘thesis by performance’ address the body and its context using material that was sometimes appropriated, sometimes invented and sometimes autobiographically constructed. From the start, these approaches and sources were used to directly address those listening in the present, the ‘now’ in which words were spoken. An approach influenced by feminist thinkers in the arts, Kathy Acker, Chris Kraus, Katrina Palmer and Linda Stupart. The methodological development of the research has been entirely iterative – developed through the making and presenting of performance texts. Each text was presented live as part of mixed-media installations, experimenting with how language and voice can be visualised and choreographed. Consequently, the resulting ‘thesis by performance’ is a doctoral submission unimpeded by a printed script - only an introductory statement and two appendices are available outside of a live reading. In this way the process of performance can inspire new terms of reference in the field of postgraduate practice-led research entirely on its own terms.

While research regarding the work environments of successful organisations reports separate outcomes of creative behaviours and highly engaged employees, little research has been carried out to simultaneously investigate both notions. This research uses a qualitative field study to investigate the creative behaviours and employee engagement of employees in five types of work contexts within a large project-based organisation. Findings highlight the importance of the challenge of problem solving as positive influence on creative behaviours and employee engagement. Implications for theory and practice include a stronger focus on job design, and manager actions in facilitating both creative behaviours and employee engagement.

There has been a significant increase in the numbers of students undertaking doctoral study over the last 20-30 years. This means that the PhD is no longer solely an elite degree designed to prepare graduates for an academic career. Instead, emphasis has increasingly been placed on the role of the PhD in producing 'advanced knowledge workers' who are expected to make a contribution to the production of knowledge in a knowledge-driven economy. This has led to an increased focus on the educational dimension of the PhD and the educational processes involved in developing students to become researchers in a range of contexts. However, the educational processes involved in the PhD are complex and differ across higher education systems, institutions and disciplines. They include formal and informal activities and involve a large number of actors with different expectations about the aims and outcomes. This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the educational processes of the PhD by exploring the complexity underlying these processes. The research was based on case studies in six departments. The case studies focused on the PhD processes of the six departments from three disciplines in four higher education institutions in England. Interviews with PhD Programme Directors, supervisors and students were complemented by analysis of institutional and departmental documents. The research was guided by a multi-level framework to examine the institutional, departmental, interpersonal and individual levels, and the inter-relatedness between levels. As such rich narratives provide insight into factors such as the PhD thesis and its influence on the supervisory relationship, formal initiatives such as assessment and coursework, and the Skills Training Programme and its underlying notion of employability. Three forms of complexity were identified. The first relates to the fact that the educational processes are individualistic in nature, and there is a need to understand the influences of the personal, social, educational and professional domains of the individual students and supervisors independently and collectively in shaping these complex processes. The second underlines the tensions and potential contradictions within and between actors as a result of the interpretation and implementation of these processes across the four levels. The third concerns a tension between the need for these processes to remain individualistic and the pressure for departments and institutions to provide standardised processes for all students. By identifying and gaining a greater understanding of these complexities, this research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the educational processes of the PhD based on grounded empirical evidence. This understanding is important in developments for enhancing the quality of PhD education, and in developing programmes which support students to become researchers in a range of different employment contexts.

My novel, Away, is mainly the story of a woman travelling alone, leaving all friends and relatives behind. She seeks out remote, beautiful and difficult places where, firstly, she has travelled to before and, then, different locations that she hasn’t known in the past. We discover that, through trauma, she has lost her sense of identity – she is in the midst of a psychological crisis that becomes clear only after the journey has been underway for some time, when circumstances force her to accept help from others. With the protagonist my aim was to portray a permanent and continuous possibility of ending, stretching endlessly. This idea is irretrievable from the notion of space, as conceived here. In Part I, I explore how not only this main character, but also, Fred embody space. Here, I examine the conception of space, taking in various perspectives raging from philosophy, geography, culture and literature studies, where we find an interdisciplinary approach to space. My contention, drawing on mainly Lefebvre’s and Massey’s investigations, is that space is produced and is simultaneously a product embodied by the characters. In addition, I analyse how a particular territory – the desert – enacts the nature of space, as defined before, in selected works by T. E. Lawrence, Wilfred Thesiger and Paul Bowles. Also, I argue that this conception of space is explored in some narratives of Paul Auster - CG, MC and CLT - in part II. Further, I examine other features of space. I contend that Auster’s writing explores space as a realm upon which Auster’s characters engage in a process of construction and disintegration both of space and their identity. Therefore, here, space is considered as a sphere constituted by a process of an ever-opened, changing and ongoing interrelation with the characters and the text. Finally, although space is presented in this essay as the major tool for investigation through composition and critical analysis, other tools, intrinsically, and I argue inseparable in fact, I proceed to an investigation, in part III, of notions of time, identity, writing and narrator in my creative work. Beside these, I investigate particularly the relationships between characters. The thesis concludes by demonstrating that writing as space evolves in more subtle, more transient and labyrinthian ways through the reference to other writers whose writing has significantly influenced my creative work.

The third volume of Saggi di anglistica e americanistica is the last in the series published under the aegis of the University of Florence PhD course in English and American Studies which, after 25 years, will terminate its activities in 2013. This last collection once again attests to the worth of the PhD's educational programme and aims: it brings together the essays produced by ten young scholars over the last three years of research, in view of preparing their PhD dissertations. They are essays that range from literary phenomena and their historic, linguistic and socio-cultural contexts, to problems posed by texts from Anglo-American to South African, Australian and Caribbean cultures, confirming the variety of the Florence PhD students' research interests and approaches. If we could change our maintenance to be more creative so as to satisfy our customers’ expectations, our hardware products would adapt better and work better or would be “customized better” to their own needs and to their own tastes in their present environments and situations. Then, we could create life time value for our hardware systems and could bring more profit in the long run than by trying to sell more by adding a wider variety of and higher functions to our systems in order to increasing one time value.

The present work is part of the Doctoral Research in Design, Manufacturing and Industrial Projects Management of the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (UPV) and is incorporated in the PhD project called ¨The implementation of digital design and manufacturing technologies in the teaching of anatomy¨. It is based on the experience as a thesis director in the Design Faculty of the University El Bosque in Bogota. The project discussed thereafter aims to strengthen the skills of students in Industrial design. With a strong technological component, the project’s method relies on the elaboration of a design project, in order to deepen the knowledge of organic 3D modeling techniques and digital sculpture, taking advantage of the boom in digital manufacturing. The project focuses on strengthening the students’ communicative and interactive skills with third parties, it particularly empowers the cognitive abilities needed to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Here the study case concentrates on education in health sciences, specifically the teaching and learning of anatomy in different disciplines. In the initial phase of the project, 3-dimensional physical teaching materials were selected to provide the pedagogical approach to Anatomy and Dental Morphology classes of the Faculty of Dentistry. Said materials constituted the starting point for further experiences and indeed it triggered the implementation of various similar projects with other departments at the UEB, all aiming to facilitate the experience of teaching - learning, guaranteeing students a theoretical and practical training through three-dimensional resources. The main feature of such training consists in a better comprehension of information, thanks to a direct and concrete interaction. This article seeks to illustrate the use given to digital design and manufacturing technology to expand the range of opportunities that could be transmitted to students in academia and such process could permeate non-traditional fields for future industrial designers, demystifying their profile solely as form-esthetics configurators toward eventually emerging as leading projects coordinators in a multidisciplinary field of work. 3D printers of fused deposition modeling (FDM) can create complex didactic models. The present paper will discuss the results of the first year and a half of work based on the academic results of design students under the direction of Professor XXX, PhD student at the UPV.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/IFDP.2016.2955

The publication explores the features of the digital technologies’ usage to organize the work of the Young Scientists’ Councils and describes the best practices. The digital transformation of society and the quarantine restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have forced the use of various digital technologies for scientific communication, the organization of work for youth associations, and the training of students and Ph.D. students. An important role in increasing the prestige of scientific activity and encouraging talented young people to participate in scientific projects belongs to the Young Scientists’ Councils, which are created at scientific institutions and higher education institutions. It is determined that the peculiarities of the work of Young Scientists’ Councils are in providing conditions for further staff development of the institution in which they operate; contribution to the social, psychological and material support of young scientists and Ph.D. students; creating an environment for teamwork and collaborative partnership; development of leadership and organizational qualities; contribution to the development of digital competence. The advantages of using electronic social networks in higher education and research institutions are analyzed, namely: general popularity and free of charge; prompt exchange of messages and multimedia data; user-friendly interface; availability of event planning functions, sending invitations, setting reminders; support of synchronous and asynchronous communication between network participants; possibility of access from various devices; a powerful tool for organizing the learning process; possibility of organization and work of closed and open groups; advertising of various events, etc. Peculiarities of managing the activity of the Young Scientists’ Council with the use of digital technologies are determined. The Young Scientists’ Council is a social system, and therefore the management of this system refers to social management. The effectiveness of the digital technologies’ usage to manage the activities of the Young Scientists’ Council depends on the intensity and need for their use to implement organizational, presentation functions and to ensure constant communication. The areas to apply digital technologies for the work managing of Young Scientists’ Councils are sorted as the presentation of activity; distribution of various information for young scientists; conducting questionnaires, surveys; organization and holding of scientific mass events; managing of thematic workgroups, holding of work meetings. Background PHS (pulmonary hypertension syndrome, ascites syndrome) is a serious cause of loss in the broiler industry, and is a prime example of an undesirable side effect of successful genetic development that may be deleteriously manifested by factors in the environment of growing broilers. Basically, continuous and pinpointed selection for rapid growth in broilers has led to higher oxygen demand and consequently to more frequent manifestation of an inherent potential cardiopulmonary incapability to sufficiently oxygenate the arterial blood. The multifaceted causes and modifiers of PHS make research into finding solutions to the syndrome a complex and multi threaded challenge. This research used several directions to better understand the development of PHS and to probe possible means of achieving a goal of monitoring and increasing resistance to the syndrome. Research Objectives (1) To evaluate the growth dynamics of individuals within breeding stocks and their correlation with individual susceptibility or resistance to PHS; (2) To compile data on diagnostic indices found in this work to be predictive for PHS, during exposure to experimental protocols known to trigger PHS; (3) To conduct detailed physiological evaluations of cardiopulmonary function in broilers; (4) To compile data on growth dynamics and other diagnostic indices in existing lines selected for susceptibility or resistance to PHS; (5) To integrate growth dynamics and other diagnostic data within appropriate statistical procedures to provide geneticists with predictive indices that characterize resistance or susceptibility to PHS. Revisions In the first year, the US team acquired the costly Peckode weigh platform / individual bird I.D. system that was to provide the continuous (several times each day), automated weighing of birds, for a comprehensive monitoring of growth dynamics. However, data generated were found to be inaccurate and irreproducible, so making its use implausible. Henceforth, weighing was manual, this highly labor intensive work precluding some of the original objectives of using such a strategy of growth dynamics in selection procedures involving thousands of birds. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements 1. Healthy broilers were found to have greater oscillations in growth velocity and acceleration than PHS susceptible birds. This proved the scientific validity of our original hypothesis that such differences occur. 2. Growth rate in the first week is higher in PHS-susceptible than in PHS-resistant chicks. Artificial neural network accurately distinguished differences between the two groups based on growth patterns in this period. 3. In the US, the unilateral pulmonary occlusion technique was used in collaboration with a major broiler breeding company to create a commercial broiler line that is highly resistant to PHS induced by fast growth and low ambient temperatures. 4. In Israel, lines were obtained by genetic selection on PHS mortality after cold exposure in a dam-line population comprising of 85 sire families. The wide range of PHS incidence per family (0-50%), high heritability (about 0.6), and the results in cold challenged progeny, suggested a highly effective and relatively easy means for selection for PHS resistance 5. The best minimally-invasive diagnostic indices for prediction of PHS resistance were found to be oximetry, hematocrit values, heart rate and electrocardiographic (ECG) lead II waves. Some differences in results were found between the US and Israeli teams, probably reflecting genetic differences in the broiler strains used in the two countries. For instance the US team found the S wave amplitude to predict PHS susceptibility well, whereas the Israeli team found the P wave amplitude to be a better valid predictor. 6. Comprehensive physiological studies further increased knowledge on the development of PHS cardiopulmonary characteristics of pre-ascitic birds, pulmonary arterial wedge pressures, hypotension/kidney response, pulmonary hemodynamic responses to vasoactive mediators were all examined in depth. Implications, scientific and agricultural Substantial progress has been made in understanding the genetic and environmental factors involved in PHS, and their interaction. The two teams each successfully developed different selection programs, by surgical means and by divergent selection under cold challenge. Monitoring of the progress and success of the programs was done be using the in-depth estimations that this research engendered on the reliability and value of non-invasive predictive parameters. These findings helped corroborate the validity of practical means to improve PHT resistance by research-based programs of selection.

Albury-Wodonga, situated in Wiradjuri country, sits astride the Murray River and has benefitted in many ways from its almost equidistance from Sydney and Melbourne. It has found strength in the earlier push for decentralisation begun in early 1970s. A number of State and Federal agencies have ensured middle class professionals now call this region home. Light industry is a feature of Wodonga while Albury maintains the traditions and culture of its former life as part of the agricultural squattocracy. Both Local Councils are keen to work cooperatively to ensure the region is an attractive place to live signing an historical partnership agreement. The region’s road, rail, increasing air links and now digital infrastructure, keep it closely connected to events elsewhere. At the same time its distance from the metropolitan centres has meant it has had to ensure that its creative and cultural life has been taken into its own hands. The establishment of the sophisticated Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) as well as the presence of the LibraryMuseum, Hothouse Theatre, Fruit Fly Circus, The Cube, Arts Space and the development of Gateway Island on the Murray River as a cultural hub, as well as the high profile activities of its energetic, entrepreneurial and internationally savvy locals running many small businesses, events and festivals, ensures Albury Wodonga has a creative heart to add to its rural and regional activities.

Climate change and its socio-ecological impacts affect all sectors of society. To tackle the multiple risks of climate change the field of climate services evolved during the last decades. In this scientific field products to be applied in practice are developed in constant interaction between climate service providers and users. To judge the effectiveness of these co-creation endeavours, evaluation is crucial. At present, output and outcome assessments are conducted occasionally in this research field. However, the summative evaluation does not help to adjust the ongoing process of co-creation. Thus, our work focuses on the formative evaluation of co-creative development of science-based climate service products. As the first step, main characteristics of the product development process were identified empirically. Secondly, we determined the six sub- processes of climate service product development and related process steps. Thirdly, we selected the questions for the formative evaluation relevant to all the sub-processes and process-steps. Then, a literature review delivered the theoretical background for further work and revealed further quality aspects. These aspects from literature were brought together with our results from the empirical work. In the end, we created a new scheme of quality criteria and related assessment questions for the different sub-processes in climate services, based on both, empirical and theoretical work. As the authors take into account the process of co-production in a real-life case, the criteria and assessment questions proposed are operational and hands-on. The quality aspects refer to the five principles of applicability, theoretical and empirical foundation, professionalism, transparency of processes and the disclosure of preconditions. They are elaborated comprehensively in our study. The resulting formative evalu- ation scheme is novel in climate service science and practice and useful in improving the co-creation processes in climate services and beyond.
