Анотація:
An ambrotype photographic view of Auckland presents one of the earliest extant photographs of the urban landscape in the city. As a rare example of a landscape presented as a cased image it marks an early scenic view that would be repeated in later technology. Identification and supporting evidence dates the cased photograph to circa 1857. Of the photographers working in Auckland at that time two primary candidates for the creation of this work are discussed, Hartley Webster and John Nicol Crombie with the argument that the former is the most likely. Several other photographic views from 1858 to 1859 are shown as examples of known early landscape photographs of Auckland. One in particular shows a wider view taken from a similar point on Constitution Hill looking across to Mechanics Bay and Parnell.

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menyanggah argumentasi Roger Scruton mengenai keabsahan nilai seni dari sebuah foto. Scruton berpendapat bahwa fotografi bukanlah karya seni. Fotografi hanyalah sebuah tindakan mekanis dalam menghasilkan suatu gambar, bukan representasi melainkan hanyalah peristiwa kausal, bukan gambaran imajinasi, tetapi hanya kopian. This paper aims to disprove Roger Scruton's argument about the validity of the artistic value of a photograph. Scruton argues that photography is not a work of art. Photography is simply a mechanical action in producing a picture, not a representation but merely a causal event, not an imaginary image, but only a copy. Photography presupposes the ease of art creation. Scruton's statement is further reinforced by the phenomenon of technological development that has forgotten the aesthetic side and only entirely devoted to the action of the machine. The excessive emphasis on the benefits of reduplication, instant processing, and photographic automation makes photography lose its place in the art world. However, the issue of art is a matter of taste. Photography remains an art by seeing the intense relationships created between an object and a photographer in a photograph. This intense relationship is reflected in the process, imagination, and creativity of the photographer in producing a photograph. Painting and photography are arts according to their own taste.

A photographic study of the wakes of slugs rising in tubes of 19 mm and 52 mm internal diameter is presented. The dependence of the flow pattern in the wake upon the Reynolds number of the rising slug, R, is established for different slug lengths. Values of R covered in this study are in the range 25 to 1.3 × 104. For low values of R the flow pattern in the wake is laminar and axisymmetric and values of wake length and wake volume could be determined from the photographs: these values were correlated with the other variables in the system by means of dimensional analysis.

In early twentieth-century France, syphilis and its controversial status as a hereditary disease reigned as a chief concern for physicians and public health officials. As syphilis primarily presented visually on the surface of the skin, its study fell within the realms of both dermatologists and venereologists, who relied heavily on visual evidence in their detection, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. Thus, in educational textbooks, atlases, and medical models, accurately reproducing the visible signposts of syphilis – the colour, texture, and patterns of primary chancres or secondary rashes – was of preeminent importance. Photography, with its potential claims to mechanical objectivity, would seem to provide the logical tool for such representations.Yet photography’s relationship to syphilographie warrants further unpacking. Despite the rise of a desire for mechanical objectivity charted in the late nineteenth century, artist-produced, three-dimensional, wax-cast moulages coexisted with photographs as significant educational tools for dermatologists; at times, these models were further mediated through photographic reproduction in texts. Additionally, the rise of phototherapy complicated this relationship by fostering the clinical equation of the light-sensitive photographic plate with the patient’s skin, which became the photographic record of disease and successful treatment. This paper explores these complexities to delineate a more nuanced understanding of objectivity vis-à-vis photography and syphilis. Rather than a desire to produce an unbiased image, fin-de-siècle dermatologists marshalled the photographic to exploit the verbal and visual rhetoric of objectivity, authority, and persuasion inextricably linked to culturally constructed understandings of the photograph. This rhetoric was often couched in the Peircean concept of indexicality, which physicians formulated through the language of witness, testimony, and direct connection.

Visual observations have been made of bubble growth in the nucleation region of flashing flow of initially subcooled water in a converging-diverging nozzle. Experiments performed under various flow rates, saturation temperatures, turbulence levels, noncondensable gas content, and artificial nucleation sites failed to produce isolated spherical bubbles of the size or density predicted by common bubble nucleation and growth models. Heterogeneous nucleation in the bulk flow was never observed and it is concluded from bubble growth rates that the role of convection in the heat and mass transfer environment of the bubbles is an important consideration in the physics of flashing flows near the nucleation region.

Repeat photography, which involves re-photographing a location from the same vantage point, has become a common method to document the changes occurring in the landscape. Artists, ecologists, geologists and anthropologists alike have employed this practice. What unites these disciplines across great ideological and cultural distances is their understanding of photography as a truthful witness to the passage of time. This position places great value on the mechanical observation of the camera and the objectivity of the photographer. The article focuses on one example of this practice: the Rocky Mountain Repeat Photography Project, an academic research project, illustrates the complexities inherent in claiming photography, or the photographer, as a neutral observer free of ideological and cultural concerns.

Toumayacha Alakana : this popular expression lays at the root of my research. It means “to look with a veiled head”. It is how the Fuegians named the act of photographing in the19th century, when they saw their first cameras, as operators came to America around 1840.What names did native people give to those new images-cum-objects ? How was that unknown device perceived ? What does it mean to be looked at by a veiled head ? My doctoral research offers a shift of of focus and point of view on the act of photography in South America. Can our understanding of photography change if we take native peoples’ perspective on the camera as a starting point ?The idea that native people do not want to be photographed, especially because it would be “stealing their souls”, is a colonial myth. This western belief gave value to the images brought back by explorers. The reasons behind refusing the camera are much more complex and diverse : they can be about the camera angle, the circulation of the image of the self, the one-sided nature of the transaction, the lack of understanding of the device, or political and spiritual considerations

An investigation was conducted to determine the methods and processes required for the manufacture of photographic objective lenses. Production of photographic lenses requires incredible precision in the melting, mixing, molding and machining of optical glass. Manual inspection methods are required to ensure optimum quality and to avoid inclusion of defects in glass. Manual assembly procedures are required to ensure delicate operation of glass elements but contribute significantly to the consumer expense of these lenses. Newly developed technologies in the field of lens machining are discussed in terms of commercial advances and scientific advances. Companies like Canon have sought greater automation in pre-assembly procedures as well as a reduction in the number of machining steps. New advances including precision machining of aspherical lenses, fluid-jet polishing and magnetorheological finishing are pushing the boundaries of lens machining and its characteristic surface roughnesses to depths not seen before.

The work carried out during this engineering doctorate degree has led to significant advances in the application of photographic measurement techniques to the characterisation of coarse water in wet steam flow, with particular emphasis on the development of a compact measurement probe suitable for application in a low-pressure steam turbine. Through the application of pulsed LED illumination for the first time in a compact probe, photographs at high magnification with excellent resolution are obtainable at significantly shorter exposure times than others reported in the literature. This has the advantage of reducing motion blur enabling reliable quantitative analysis to take place. Secondary to this, the coupling of high magnification, high resolution photography with pulsed LED illumination has been shown to provide a powerful research tool for flow visualisation across a range of applications, at an order of magnitude lower cost than commercial solutions employing pulsed laser illumination for the same purpose. This builds on the work of others elsewhere in the literature, but again has been proven at shorter exposure times enabling higher magnification with reduced motion blur. Finally a flexible optical test rig has been designed and manufactured, to act as an experimental test-bed for both photographic and phase-Doppler measurements on two-phase steam and air-water sprays. Phase-Doppler anemometry measurements have been performed on an accelerated jet of two-phase steam in order to perform size and velocity measurement of liquid droplets. This acts as a proof-of-concept for the technique in wet steam given the appropriate optical access. In addition phase-Doppler measurements of an air-atomising water nozzle were used as a validation data set to assess the accuracy and reliability of quantitative data from the photographic probe. In this case quantitative data was extracted from the images through application of a custom-designed image processing algorithm, designed to extract droplet size and velocity information from double-exposure droplet images. In general agreement is good within 10-15% of the PDA measurements. Photographic and PDA measurements have also been taken of an LP spray nozzle, as used in the Alstom model steam turbine test facility. These tests have demonstrated significant differences in the spray characteristics when spraying into air and into vacuum conditions. This provides useful insight for the positioning and application of these spray nozzles in a steamturbine environment.

Detonation waves in gaseous reactive mixtures have been known to exhibit multidimensional structure since the 1950's. The interaction of shocks and presence of unsteady triple shock interactions in the detonation structure give rise to the detonation cell, the size of which is determined by the reactive mixture and initial conditions. Detonable gaseous mixtures have been classified as regular or irregular, depending on their behavior in particular experimental conditions. The main combustion mechanisms in the structure of irregular mixtures have not yet been positively identified. The structure of detonation waves in an irregular mixture of stoichiometric methane and oxygen is observed using non-intrusive visual diagnostics. Framing schlieren, streak schlieren and framing self-luminous imaging were used, yielding, respectively, an instantaneous measure of the density gradient, a time evolution of the density gradients and a record of the regions of high luminosity. Regions of high luminosity correspond qualitatively to regions of high chemical reaction. Pockets of high density gas were observed behind the lead shock surface. Light emission was observed, using framing self-luminous imaging, at the edges of these pockets indicating the pockets burned primarily at the edges. The amount of mass burned in one such pocket was found to be 40% of the total mass burned in one cell cycle. The induction time of a particle undergoing shock compression was calculated. The cases of constant properties behind the shock and of a decaying blast followed by expansion waves were considered as characteristic induction times of shock-induced combustion. Both measures of induction time were found to be longer than the typical time scale of a particle burning in one of the observed pockets. Furthermore, the coincidence of light emission with the edges of the pocket of unburned gas and the long time scales involved indicate the burning mechanism of this unburned pocket to be turbulent diffusion rather than shock compression.

In this thesis, two computational camera designs are presented. They target two major goals in computational photography. high dynamic range (HDR) imaging and image superresolution (SR). HDR imaging refers to capturing both bright and dark details in the scenes simultaneously. A modulo camera does not get saturated during exposure, enabling HDR photography in a single shot without losing spatial resolutions. The second camera achieves image super-resolution with its non-conventional pixel design. It is shown that recording multiple images with a sensor of asymmetric sub-pixel layout increases the spatial sampling capability compared to a conventional sensor. Both proposed camera designs are the combination of novel imaging sensors and image recovering algorithms. Their potential applications include photography, robotics, and scientific research. Theoretical analyses and experiments are performed to validate our solutions.

Abstract The salt print is an important part of photography, both in its historic value and in the tonal range it can provide. This tonal range is greater than any other photographic printing process available to date attributed to the inherent masking ability of the metallic silver. However the intrinsic production problems have made it a 'forgotten' process. There are five key problems. 1. The difficulties in achieving the potential extensive tonal range. 2. The varying colour of the print. 3. Staining that appears in the print, during and after processing. 4. Instability and longevity of the salt print. 5. Contradictory and inaccurate information in material published on the salt print. Although the emphasis of the research is on exploring and controlling the colour and tonal range, the staining problems and stability of the print are also addressed. The materials used for contact negatives today vary in both capture and output, from analogue film processed in the traditional wet darkroom to a variety of transparent film printed from digital files. Inadequate density and tonal range can affect all types of negatives. To provide sufficient exposure time for the salt prints extended tonal range adjustments to the negative were necessary. These long exposures then converted sufficient silver salts to the image making metallic silver, utilising the intrinsic self-masking process. Ultimately this research has uncovered ways to control colour and tonal range and certain aesthetic qualities of the salt print, while simultaneously resolving some of the conflicts in published information. Accurate and consistent methods of processing eliminate staining, providing some stability to the print. The activities and steps carried out to make a salt print are manual; precise duplication is therefore almost unattainable. Nevertheless, although tests on a densitometer may display numeric differences, visual differences are barely noticeable.

For the past six years, a course on flow visualization has been offered to mixed teams of graduate and undergraduate engineering and fine arts photography students at the University of Colorado. The course has significant technical content on flow visualization and photographic techniques, and includes some emphasis on documentation and the interpretation of results, particularly with respect to atmospheric dynamics as revealed by clouds. What makes this course unusual is the emphasis on the production of images for aesthetic purposes: for art. While a number of art/science collaborations are growing worldwide, both in professional and academic communities, typically scientists are expected to contribute technical support while artists produce art. A particularly unusual aspect of this course is that all students are expected to demonstrate both aesthetic sensibility and scientific discipline. Another is that students are not constrained to study specific phenomena or use specific techniques; instead, creativity is required. A major outcome from this course is a series of stunning images. In addition, anecdotal evidence suggests that this course has a lasting impact on students’ perception of fluid physics, which can be contrasted to the effect of traditional introductory fluids courses. This raises the question of whether this impact is significant with respect to students’ understanding and appreciation of fluid mechanics, and if so, what aspect of the flow visualization course is most important? A survey instrument is being designed to quantify whether students’ awareness of fluid mechanics in the world around them changes when they take these courses and if students’ attitudes towards fluids is changed when they take these courses.

Abstract We photographed water droplets (550 μm diameter) as they impacted on a stainless steel surface. We varied droplet impact velocity (10–40 m/s) and the average surface roughness (0.03–0.23 μm) of the steel plates used as test surfaces in our experiments. A piezoelectric droplet generator was used to produce water droplets. The stainless steel substrate was mounted on the end of a rotating arm, giving linear velocities of up to 40 m/s. A CCD video camera was used to photograph droplets impinging on the substrate. By synchronizing the ejection of a single droplet with the position of the rotating arm and triggering of the camera, different stages of droplet impact were photographed. From these photographs we measured the size of droplets as they spread. It was observed that as the impact velocity increased, finger-shape perturbations around the spreading droplet became longer and narrower. At sufficiently high velocities the tips of these fingers detached, producing satellite droplets. Increasing surface roughness was found to promote splashing and reduce the velocity at which splashing was first observed. By increasing surface roughness, both the number of fingers and the maximum extent of spreading were decreased. At high impact velocities the spreading liquid film became so thin that it ruptured in several places.

Photographic methods of analyzing vehicles and scenes for the purpose of accident reconstruction have been well researched and documented. Photogrammetric analysis has appeared in various forms and levels of complexity over the years. Mathematical relationships have been researched and presented depicting the methods and bases of these techniques. This paper will present some new tools and methodologies in the process of photographic analysis. The PhotoModeler program will be utilized to demonstrate applications of digital photogrammetry in the field of accident reconstruction. Several different methodologies, including single and multiple photograph projects using calibrated and inverse cameras, will be evaluated and demonstrated. Additionally, comparisons to traditional methods of measurements will be presented. It will be demonstrated that the use of digital photogrammetry has advanced the science of accident reconstruction by employing computer and digital technology to achieve greater efficiency and improved accuracy.

The resulting photographs are analyzed to extract information regarding stress wave interactions, crack speeds and the dynamic stress field ahead of the moving cracks.

Aerial photograph interpretation is an accurate and economical method of assessing terrain conditions and natural hazards affecting pipelines and other linear facilities. Completed in advance of vehicle and helicopter-based reconnaissance, it provides a comprehensive site overview that cannot be obtained at ground level. Aerial photograph interpretation helps construct and confirm preliminary hazard and stream-crossing inventories, understand hazard mechanisms, and estimate hazard volume and activity. Time series photo interpretation uses several sets of aerial photographs taken of the same area in different years to track changes in terrain, stream patterns and land-use over time. In addition, aerial photographs are superior navigation tools in the field. These points are illustrated using examples from pipelines in British Columbia and Alberta. This work will be of interest to managers of pipelines throughout western Canada, and to those involved with pipeline route selection through mountainous regions.

An experimental and computational investigation was conducted to study the growth and detachment of a single liquid droplet. High-speed photography was employed to capture the droplet evolution from the onset to the breakup time. Three-dimensional computations were carried out to predict the droplet behavior and flow dynamics inside the droplet. The droplet fluid was water immersed in the surrounding atmospheric air. The computations were performed using the finite volume and Volume of Fluid (VOF) techniques. The computations and high-speed photography of the droplet formation were carried out at 20°C. Diameter of the injection port was 2.4 mm and the flow rate for generation of droplets was 1.1 × 10−4 kg/s. These values together with the choice of liquid resulted in a Bond number of 0.19, Capillary number of 3.4 × 10−4, and liquid-to-gas viscosity ratio of 56.05. The results indicated that the shape and evolution of the droplet as predicted by the computations were in good agreement with those captured on the high-speed photographs. The computations revealed details of the flow inside the droplet such as pressure and velocity.

Abstract Photographic observations of the boiling phenomena have played an important role in gaining insight into the boiling mechanism. This paper presents a brief historical review of the available literature on the photographic studies in pool and flow boiling. This is followed by the results of the photographic studies conducted in the author’s laboratory on liquid droplets impinging on a heated surface. Liquid-vapor interface and contact line movements are observed through a high speed camera at high resolution. The effect of surface roughness an surface temperature on dynamic advancing and receding contact angles has been studied. Also, the effect of rapid evaporation on advancing and receding contact angles, liquid-vapor interface motion, and dryout front propagation have been investigated.

Ice fog events, which occur during the Arctic winter, result in greatly decreased visibility and can lead to an increase of ice on roadways, aircraft, and airfields. The Fairbanks area is known for ice fog conditions, and previous studies have shown these events to be associated with moisture released from local power generation. Despite the identified originating mechanism of ice fog, there remains a need to quantify the environmental conditions controlling its origination, intensity, and spatial extent. This investigation focused on developing innovative methods of identifying and characterizing the environmental conditions that lead to ice fog formation near Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Preliminary data collected from December 2019 to March 2020 suggest that ice fog events occurred with temperatures below −34°C, up to 74% of the time ice fog emanated from the power generation facility, and at least 95% of ice particles during ice fog events were solid droxtals with diameters ranging from 7 to 50 μm. This report documents the need for frequent and detailed observations of the meteorological conditions in combination with photographic and ice particle observations. Datasets from these observations capture the environmental complexity and the impacts from energy generation in extremely cold weather conditions.
