Background: The assessment of the coronary artery calcium score and the degree of coronary stenosis with the aim of tracking a higher risk for coronary events, when associated with an assessment of functional health, may indicate possible physical disabilities that will impact their quality of life. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: 208 patients underwent coronary artery calcium score quantification and were divided into absent (0), low (1-100), intermediate (101-400) and high / very high (> 400), as well as the degree of coronary artery stenosis through percentage. Functional assessment was performed through the measure of functional independence, modified Katz index and Barthel index, and for physical capacity and the 6-minute walk test, with statistical analysis through analysis of variance. Results: The middle ages were 57±11,2 years and 61,5% were females. The most frequent risk factors were high blood pressure (78,4%) and family history to CAD (72,1%). The most common level was intermediate, 23,8%. The functionality showed a deficit of 19%; the distance travelled was 67,9% of the predicted distance, with differences observed between coronary arterial calcium score groups (p=0,03). The functionality was associated with the sedentary lifestyle (p=0,007) and dyspnea (p=0,008), while the physical capacity was associated with the dyspnea (p=0,03). Conclusions: Patients with coronary artery disease with a higher calcium score (>400) had reduced physical capacity. Functionality showed that there was an association with a sedentary lifestyle and dyspnea.

The development of tourism activities in Taman Wisata Alam Krandangan (TWAK) has shown an escalating trend with 33% visits increase in a period of 2010-2014. The increasing number of visits is potential to promote environmental damage. Therefore, to create a function balance between the area conservation and it’s utilization as a tourism destination, then an assessment study on the tourism carrying capacity is of high importance. This research aimed to analyze tourism carrying capacity based on the environment biophysical aspects as well as the management capacity in TWAK. Assessments method employed was a carrying capacity assessment developed by Cifuentes (1992). The concepts of this carrying capacity assessment considered physical, biological, and management conditions in determining the maximum number of visitors and was divided into three levels i.e. Physical Carrying Capacity (PCC), Real Carrying Capacity (RCC) and Effective Carrying Capacity (ECC). The assessment of carrying capacity was performed in 4 tourism area of TWAK i.e. recreational area, observation area, camping area and hiking tracks. The calculation results showed the physical carrying capacity (PCC) of TWAK was 1,406 visitors per day. This value implies the number of visitors that physically can be contained in every group of tourism area. Physical carrying capacity could not consider the biophysical factors of the area. Hence, this value cannot be utilized as a reference in visitor management. Based on the calculation result of the real carrying capacity, the maximum number of visitors to be allowed to visit TWAK is 186 people per day. An effective carrying capacity is 93 visitors per day.

Abstract The compulsory part of the individual life is physical activity. The physical activity is important for maintenance health capacity. Physical activity includes various kinds of components: physical activity during the leisure time (during the week days and weekend days), physical activity at home and in working place and physical activity during the transference from home to other place. Intensity of the physical activity could also be various from low to moderate and till high. Respondent of study groups were partly time students from Riga Medical College (RMC), n = 41, and from Riga Teacher Training and Education Management Academy (RTTEMA), n = 37. Respondents were students of both genders aged from 19 years till 53 years. We have provided the assessment of the principal anthropometric characteristics (height and body mass) as well the anthropometric indices (body mass index (BMI)) and physical activity level questionnaire for students. Analysis of the data of physical activity questionnaire revealed that the average physical activity for students from RMC corresponded to low level of physical activity. The respondents from RRTEMA have moderate level of physical activity.

ABSTRACT SARS-CoV-2 infection can cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), leading to hypoxemia. Physical capacity assessment can be performed before hospital discharge using submaximal exercise testing. This study sought to assess physical capacity and exercise tolerance with the six-minute step test (6MST) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients who required oxygen (O2) support during hospitalization. A prospective, interventional study was conducted with patients aged from 18 to 90 years who required oxygen therapy during hospitalization. Assessment was performed using Perme Score, followed by the 6MST tests, assessing the peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and subjective exertion perception by Borg Scale, before and immediately after the 6MST. A total of 31 patients, with a mean age of 51.9 years, were evaluated. Nasal cannula (NC) was the most used device (64.5% of patients). Regarding HR, BP, and Borg Scale, their mean value increased after 6MST. SpO2 showed a lower mean value after 6MST. Out of the 86.9% of patients who completed the test, 48.3% completed it with interruptions, and 12.9% had to suspend it. The 6MST was able to assess physical capacity and exercise tolerance, proving to be an effective tool for evaluating COVID-19 patients.

Currently, the concept of health involves not only a psychological and physical well being of the individual and community, but also a certain ability for physical effort, and regaining your strength after effort, of resistance against the unfavorable environmental factors, against diseases, and a certain longevity, in concordance with the socio-economic and geographical conditions in which a person performs his/her activity. Thus, a person cannot be considered healthy if they do not have a good work capacity and/or a certain nonspecific general resistance to the unfavorable environmental factors and to diseases. This study aimed to assess the work capacity in a group of untrained subjects.

Background: The article raises a topical scientific problem regarding the physical inactivity and low physical capacity of the elderly population, the indicators of which, according to researchers in old age, can help predict institutionalization, disability, or even the risk of premature death. Various organizations around the world are striving to increase the number of physically active people by raising awareness and developing preventive measures. In this study, we looked for optimal activities that can effectively improve the physical capacity and quality of life self assessment of older people. Methods: Eurofit tests were used to assess physical capacity (Jones, & Rikli, 2002). The study assessed the physical capacity of elderly people to determine body composition, motor system capacity, skeletal muscle capacity, and cardiovascular capacity. A shortened version of the WHO questionnaire (World Health Organization Quality of Life 100 - WHOQOL-100), WHO-BREF-26 was used to assess quality of life (World Health Organization, 2012). Results: The indicators of quality of life of the subjects did not improve in a statistically significant way after physically energetic activities – exercise, swimming and Nordic walking. The indicators of physical capacity of the subjects improved in a statistically significant way after physically energetic activities. The three-month exercise increased hand muscle strength and body composition, swimming activity increased hand muscle strength, upper body flexibility and motor system performance indicators, Nordic walking statistically significantly improved upper body flexibility. Conclusions: Different physical activity activities significantly improve different components of physicalcapacity. Keywords: physical activity, elderly people, physical capacity.

Background The use of standardized assessment tools is an element of evidence-informed rehabilitation, but physical therapists report administering these tools inconsistently poststroke. An in-depth understanding of physical therapists' approaches to walking assessment is needed to develop strategies to advance assessment practice. Objectives The objective of this study was to explore the methods physical therapists use to evaluate walking poststroke, reasons for selecting these methods, and the use of assessment results in clinical practice. Design A qualitative descriptive study involving semistructured telephone interviews was conducted. Methods Registered physical therapists assessing a minimum of 10 people with stroke per year in Ontario, Canada, were purposively recruited from acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient settings. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were coded line by line by the interviewer. Credibility was optimized through triangulation of analysts, audit trail, and collection of field notes. Results Study participants worked in acute care (n=8), rehabilitation (n=11), or outpatient (n=9) settings and reported using movement observation and standardized assessment tools to evaluate walking. When selecting methods to evaluate walking, physical therapists described being influenced by a hierarchy of factors. Factors included characteristics of the assessment tool, the therapist, the workplace, and patients, as well as influential individuals or organizations. Familiarity exerted the primary influence on adoption of a tool into a therapist's assessment repertoire, whereas patient factors commonly determined daily use. Participants reported using the results from walking assessments to communicate progress to the patient and health care professionals. Conclusions Multilevel factors influence physical therapists' adoption and daily administration of standardized tools to assess walking. Findings will inform knowledge translation efforts aimed at increasing the standardized assessment of walking poststroke.

Commonly studied physical functions include activities such as walking and climbing stairs. Despite the acknowledged role of environmental factors and behavioral strategies to compensate for reduced performance capacity or environmental barriers in characterizing physical functioning, most assessments do not take these factors into account. This article presents a new conceptual model for assessment of relevant physical functioning while accounting for habitual environmental factors and compensation strategies.

As the Internet of Things technology develops rapidly, cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have provided critical technologies in the industrial field. A smart grid is a typical application of the CPS, which is formed by the coupling of the power network and communication network. In general, the two networks are heterogeneous. Considering the characteristics of the power network, the ordinary percolation network model is not suitable for the network carrying physical flow. Therefore, we propose an interdependent network model with a load. That is, nodes in the physical network have loaded. Then, we research the security of CPS under the multi-load mode. The rule for node failure is different from the percolation model. When a node’s load exceeds its capacity, the node fails. Through the theoretical analysis, we obtained the iterative equation of the percolation threshold and analyzed it through simulation experiments. We adopt both linear and nonlinear capacity models. It is found that appropriately increasing the average degree of ER network can improve its ability to resist attacks. In contrast, the power exponent of the SF network has less influence on the critical value of network percolation. In addition, we found that increasing the capacity parameter in the linear capacity model can improve the robustness of the network, where the variation of the ER-ER network is more evident than that of the SF-SF network. Increasing the capacity parameter in the nonlinear capacity model can significantly increase the network’s ability to resist attacks. However, due to the increase in economical cost, we can improve the network’s reliability by increasing the node capacity while controlling the cost.

Abstract Introduction Assessing the functional capacity of the upper limbs (UL) is essential to direct treatments in clinical practice but there is a lack of research on specific methods for this end. Objective To verify the relationship of physical activity, grip strength (GS) and body mass index (BMI) with performance on 6-minute Pegboard and Ring Test (6PBRT) in healthy subjects. Methods Cross-sectional, exploratory and quantitative study. Apparently healthy adults were evaluated, both sexes, according to sociodemographic and anthropometric aspects, health conditions, physical activity level (IPAQ - short version), GS and functional capacity of the upper limbs (6PBRT). The data were analyzed descriptively using means, standard deviations, absolute figures and percentages. Correlations were found between variables using Spearman’s correlation coefficient (p < 0.05). The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows, version 17.0 was used for analysis purposes. Results In total, 50 individuals were evaluated, the majority classified as active (54%). The mean GS was 30.70 ± 9,47kgf and the average number of loops moved during the 6PBRT was 277.6 ± 34.48. There was no correlation between the number of rings moved in 6PBRT and the level of physical activity (r = 0.076; p = 0.602), GS (r = -0.008; p = 0.956) or BMI (r = 0.031; p = 0.829). Conclusion The level of physical activity, GS and BMI did not influence the performance on 6PBRT, demonstrated by the lack of correlation between these variables.

Background: Physical activity and fitness level of fitness decline mostly between adolescence and early adulthood. This leads to risks of non-communicable diseases in the future. Medical students, assumed to have an extensive understanding of physical exercise and its benefits, are less active than they were before attending graduate school. This study aimed to assess changes in physical fitness and physical activity of students over-time. Methods: This was a prospective study undertaken at Basic Science Complex of Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital in Nepal. In total, 72 medical students were put through a modified Harvard step test during their first year and then three years later during their third year at medical school. Maximum aerobic capacity (VO2 max) was calculated subsequently by plotting the average pulse rate on the Astrand-Rhyming Nomogram. Results: The mean value of relative maximum aerobic capacity (VO2 max) decreased from first year to the third year. When the mean values of body mass index and relative maximum aerobic capacity were compared between first year and third year, the difference was found to be statistically significant (p-value=0.000). The physical fitness index and relative maximum aerobic capacity in both years were positively correlated r (70) = +.59, p<0.001(first year); r (70) = +.47, p<0.001(third year). Meanwhile, body mass index and relative maximum aerobic capacity in the third year were negatively correlated and statistically significant with r (70) = -0.23, p=.045. Conclusions: Cardiorespiratory fitness of the students steadily declined as they progressed through their academic years. Positive correlation between cardiorespiratory fitness and physical fitness index was established along with negative correlation between body mass index and cardiorespiratory fitness. The findings in this study expose the lack of fitness in youth as they focus more on academics, giving the impression that they forget to implement a fitness routine in their lifestyle.

In order to cope with the increase of the final user traffic, operators and vendors are pushing towards physical layer aware networking as a way to maximize the network capacity. To this aim, optical networks are becoming more and more open by exposing physical parameters enabling fast and reliable estimation of the lightpath quality of transmission. This comes in handy not only from the point of view of the planning and managing of the optical paths but also on a more general picture of the whole optical network performance. In this work, the Statistical Network Assessment Process (SNAP) is presented. SNAP is an algorithm allowing for estimating different network metrics such as blocking probability or link saturation, by generating traffic requests on a graph abstraction of the physical layer. Being aware of the physical layer parameters and transceiver technologies enables assessing their impact on high level network figures of merit. Together with a detailed description of the algorithm, we present a comprehensive review of several results on the networking impact of multirate transceivers, flex-grid spectral allocation as a means to finely exploit lightpath capacity and of different Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) solutions.

Cave tourism is a nature-based tourism which has recently gained its popularity in Thailand. Cave sare natural attractions which are extremely vulnerable, especially caves with limitations in both size and area. Thus, this study aims at studying and determining the maximum and suitable carrying capacity to support physical and ecological tourism in Ban Tham Sua tourism community area to avoid overtourism. The methodology used in this research was a survey on the tourist’s utilization, duration, number of tourists, and tourism impacts. Moreover, the impact assessment using 16 indicators presented by 5 geological experts for ecological carrying capacity of the cave areas were also conducted. This area-based study was conducted in 3 areas: Thep Nimit Cave, Nang Fa Cave, and Sua Noi Cave. The study found that the number of tourists in these three caves were below carrying capacitywhich had no or insignificant impact on natural resources. However, it was found that SuaNoi Cave was a huge destruction of the original resources. The study suggests that carrying capacity of cave tourism should be well planned and managed to prevent the environmental degradation.

The paper presents an assessment of the acceptable tourist bathing load with regard to the physical, real, and effective carrying capacity of coastal beaches. In the case study of the Town of Mali Lošinj (Croatia), the paper scrutinises the carrying capacity of beaches categorised according to their basic characteristics and presents an analysis of beach capacity in the real conditions of the 2018 tourist season and in three hypothetical scenarios, two of which involve the application of recommendations for COVID-19 epidemiological measures. The basic hypothesis of the paper is that the real carrying capacity of beaches in the researched area under normal conditions is close to the upper load limits and that the carrying capacity of beaches will no longer be sufficient (vis-à-vis demand) when epidemiological recommendations are applied. The aim of this paper is to provide measurable bases for sustainable physical plans and development policies in tourism.

Introduction: Cardiorespiratory fitness is an indicator of cardiovascular health, usually expressed as VO2max. VO2max is the capacity of our body to transport and utilize oxygen during maximal exertion. The present study attempts to assess the level of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in medical students and compare VO2max between physically active and insufficiently active students. Materials and Methods: An observational cross sectional study was conducted in 246 medical students (123 males and females each) of age between 18 to 23 years in National Medical College, Birgunj. After obtaining ethical clearance, screening was done with American College of Sports Medicine participants screening questionnaire. Students were classified as physically active and insufficiently active by using Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. VO2max was calculated from recovery heart rate counted from fifth to twentieth second of recovery after step test. Finally, subjects were categorized into different level of cardiorespiratory fitness based on their VO2max values. Results: Present study found 33.6% of insufficiently physical active students. Females had higher prevalence of insufficient physical activity (40.6%) than males (26.8%). The VO2max of male and female was 46.79 ± 8.98 and 36.15 ± 4.66 ml/Kg/min respectively. Majority of female participants had ‘average’ VO2max whereas in male, distribution is almost equal in ‘excellent’, ‘good’ and ‘fair’ category. Conclusion: Around one-third of medical students did not meet the level of physical activity recommended by WHO for health. Majority of them had ‘average’ level of VO2max and those physically active had better cardiorespiratory fitness.

10 men and 12 women joggers who had recently completed assessment of their aerobic capacity, were given the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, the Activation-Deactivation Adjective Check List, and Scales K, 2, 7, 9, and 9–2 (Psychomotor acceleration) from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Multiple regression equations were constructed separately for each sex to determine the effect of statistical control of psychological states on the correlations between aerobic capacity and personality traits. The correlations between aerobic capacity and Factor B (Intelligence) for men and Factor C (Emotionality) for women, were substantially reduced when state variables were controlled, while correlations between aerobic capacity and Factors M (Imagination) for men and Q1 (Experimenting) for women were substantially enhanced by controlling for state variables. The results were interpreted as support for study of state variables as mediating factors in the relationship between physical fitness and personality. Replication with larger samples is necessary.

Objectives: Questionnaires on physical activity (PA) and physical capacity (PC) are valuable tools, as they are cost beneficial, and have high response rates. The validity of short versions of such questionnaires has not been examined satisfactorily. Therefore, we aimed at examining the validity of a set of questions coding for PA and PC. Design: The questions were administered to 217 men and women attending a cardiac rehabilitation program. Participants also gave blood samples, measuring HDL cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), insulin, glucose, and microCRP. The relations between PA and PC and biological markers were examined by linear regression analyses. Results: Measures for PC and for PA were identified by factor analysis, which proved internally consistent. TG, homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) score, and mCRP were all significantly associated with the measures of PC and PA. Conclusions: The measures of PA and PC are valid compared with biological markers, allowing cost-beneficial and time-efficient evaluation of important measures for cardiovascular health.

Resilience is defined as the capacity of a system to cope with a hazardous event or disturbance, responding or reorganizing in ways that maintain its essential function, identity, and structure, while also maintaining the capacity for adaptation, learning and transformation. A resilient health system is one that is capable to anticipate, respond to, cope with, recover from and adapt to system-related shocks and stress, so as to bring sustained improvements in population health, despite the unstable circumstances. Nowadays, the emergency department (ED) of hospitals faces growing demands, rising acuteness and longer waiting times. An efficient, accurate and resilient triage system to improve the operation of the ED becomes crucial. In this work, a resilient system for automatic priority, sorting and monitoring of medical events -triage system- is developed, so that the patients in the ED are treated according to the severity of their condition and not by the order of attendance utilizing a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) that aggregates, processes patients’ vital signs as well as determines their Health Status (HS), according to which the ED staff performs the appropriate classification.

Introduction. The present study deals with anaerobic power capacity in athletes, differences between power capabilities of these athletes in relation to the type of sports and differences in regard to non-athletes. The goal of this study was to analyze parameters of anaerobic capacity and also to examine if the type and duration of the training period affect values of anaerobic capacity. Material and Methods. This study included 95 male subjects: non-athletes and athletes of various sports: judo players, rowers and soccer players. Anaerobic capacity was determined using the Wingate test. Results and Discussion. The obtained results show a statistically higher anaerobic capacity in judo players (PP 798 W - 9.64 W/kg) in regard to soccer players (PP 763 W - 9.75W/kg), rowers (PP 691 W - 8.8 W/kg) and non-athletes (PP 557 W - 6.93W/kg). Judo is a sport which requires high anaerobic capacity. Our results show that athletes have a higher anaerobic power capacity in regard to non-athletes. It can be explained solely by physical training. .

Background Social isolation has been one of the main measures for the prevention of COVID-19. It’s possible that, in addition to the natural aging-related deficits, social isolation has accelerated the decline of the different components of physical and mental capacity in older adults. This study aimed to compare the functional capacity and concern about falling in older adults before and during COVID-19 social isolation. Method This observational longitudinal study was carried out with 45 community dwelling older adults (mean age 65.6 ± 4.6 years, 88.8% women). Functional capacity and concerns about falling assessments were carried out before the COVID-19 pandemic, and between the 16th and 18th week of social isolation. All testes were face-to-face, except the second FES-I assessment, which took place via telephone call in order to minimize a prolonged person-to-person contact. Muscle strength, muscle power, functional mobility, functional muscle fitness, upper and lower body flexibility, dynamic balance, and Efficacy Scale were assessments. Results Regarding functional capacity, there was 14% decline in muscle strength (p<.001), 7% in power (p=.001), 11% in functional mobility (p=.001), 20% in functional muscle fitness (p=.001), and 60% in upper body flexibility (p=.001) and 33% lower body flexibility (p=.003). The dynamic balance and the concern about falling showed no statistically significant differences. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that there was a decline in older adults’ functional capacity during COVID-19 social isolation.

Background:Studies of the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) of transfemoral amputees have mostly used protocols that activate a relatively small muscle mass. Consequently, transfemoral amputee VO2maxmay be systematically underestimated, and the validity of these test protocols is questionable.Objectives:(1) Investigate validity and reliability of a VO2maxwalking protocol and (2) compare the VO2maxof a transfemoral amputee group with a group of matching controls.Study design:(1) Randomized crossover study: walking versus running VO2maxfor the control group and (2) case-control study: transfemoral amputees versus control group VO2max.Methods:Twelve transfemoral amputees and control participants performed a walking VO2maxtest with increasing treadmill inclinations to voluntary exhaustion. The control group also completed a running (“gold-standard”) VO2maxtest.Results:Mean (standard deviation) control group VO2maxfollowing walking and running was similar, that is, 2.99 (0.6) L min−1and 3.09 (0.7) L min−1, respectively. Mean (standard deviation) transfemoral amputee walking VO2maxwas 2.14 (0.8) L min−1(compared to CON; p < 0.01). Mean intraclass correlation coefficient of repeated VO2measurements was 0.97, and within-subjects standard deviation was 60 mL min−1.Conclusions:The walk protocol is valid. Walking VO2maxof transfemoral amputees was 40% lower compared to control group. Reliability of the walking protocol is comparable to other walking protocols.Clinical relevanceThe design, alignment, and materials of prostheses are important for effective ambulation. Cardio-respiratory fitness is, however, also important in this regard, and a low fitness may compromise health and independent living. Hence, transfemoral amputees with low physical fitness should engage in regular physical activity to improve health, gait capacity, and independency.

The objective of the study was to assess behavioural and emotional problems, as well as physical capacity, in children and adolescents with congenital cardiac disease. From the database of Paediatric Heart Section, Children's Clinic, Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Oslo, Norway, we identified 430 patients whose parents received questionnaires using the Child Behaviour Check-List. The response rate was 75.8%. In addition, the parents received a questionnaire focusing on special issues with regard to physical activity. Parents of children and adolescents with congenital cardiac diseases reported significantly more behavioural problems than did a reference population and boys were scored higher compared to girls. Analysis showed a significant impact of physical capacity on the score representing total problems, as well as scores for externalising and internalising behaviour. Compared to a reference population, parents of children and adolescents with congenital cardiac disease score their children higher on most scales when rated using the Child Behaviour Check-List. The type of diagnosis did not affect the scores reflecting the total problem. The main factor of impact on behavioural problems was, as evaluated by the parents, the physical capacity of the children.

The aim of this paper is to identify the spatial and temporal distribution of chemical and physical parameters that characterize the water quality, the trophic state and the self-purification capacity assessment of Snagov Lake. The Snagov Lake is a natural lake located at 25-30 km North from Romanias capital, Bucharest. The study was conducted during a five years period, from April 2010 until October 2014. The measurements used (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, transparency, chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, TN/TP ratio) are presented in the form of spatial and temporal evolutions. For self-purification identification the aerobic mineralization degree, biological depuration factor and TN/TP ratio were used. The trophic stage of Snagov Lake in the range and in all the points of sampling is eutrophichipereutrophic for all the parameters used for assessment, excepting several short periods of time (fall of 2010, spring and fall of 2011) when the lake was in mesotrophic state.

The coastal areas of India are getting greater importance in recent years, owing to increasing human population, urbanization and accelerated developmental activities. These anthropogenic activities have created conflict between physical, environmental and human dimensions. Systematic knowledge and understanding of various dimensions of the coastal area shall guide for wise use of coastal resources, resolving human-induced problems, and improving governance systems. Integrated coastal management (ICM) is conceived as a holistic management tool working across sectoral, disciplinary, and institutional boundaries. Any program aimed at integrated management of the coastal zone is to meet and overcome the challenges of building up and anchoring new institutional, technical, and administrative capacity. Capacity development on integrated management and planning are recently initiated at academic level in India. UNDP defines capacity development as “the process through which individuals, organisations and societies obtain, strengthen and maintain the capabilities to set and achieve their own development objectives over time. A capacity assessment provides a comprehensive perspective on capacities critical to the achievement of development objectives. Capacity need analysis are offering desired future capacities against current capacities and offers a systematic way of gathering critical knowledge and information on capacity asset. Capacity assessment on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICM) in India has been conducted by surveying published literatures through data mining from databases. In total seven thousand three hundred and fifty six indexed research papers which were published in Indias’ coastal areas between the years 1977 and 2008 were assessed for capacity need assessment purpose. The literatures were classified under sixteen subject heads which are the essential components of ICM planning process. The subject clusters were further classified into five levels viz., introductory level, process level, decision level, sustainable coastal zone management level, and innovative level. Researches where does not happened on the particular subjects were classified as “no evidence of research”. Based on the content of the literature and a skill map prepared, it is found that the literatures are mostly under introductory level and they are mostly on science subjects with few on socio-economic and management subjects. Considering the outcome of this literature survey and capacity analysis, the World Bank has accepted for financial assistance to establish National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management at Chennai, India. The process of ICM capacity analysis in India is described in this paper.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of physical capacity on the relationship of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with cognitive function in people with PD. For this study, serum BDNF levels were measured in 29 PD participants and 30 healthy controls. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) scale. Physical capacity was evaluated using the 6-min walk distance (6-MWD). Participants were categorized into low or high physical capacity group according to their 50th percentile 6-MWD. It was found that MOCA total score correlated with serum BDNF level (r = .44, P = .012) in the entire PD sample. This correlation remained significant only in the low physical capacity group (r = .62; P = .03) but not in the high physical capacity group (r = .31; P = .22). It was concluded that the relationship of BDNF with cognitive function might be dependent on physical capacity. The results are preliminary, thus future studies are needed to confirm these findings.

The purpose of the study was the assessment of the proposed physical therapy on physical capacity of pa- tients having severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). One hundred and twenty-four (124) pa- tients having severe COPD were examined. All patients underwent standard clinical, laboratory and functional examination. Physical capacity of patients was assessed by the 6-minutes walking distance (6MWD). Application of physical therapy with patients having COPD resulted in a statistically significant greater dynamics of growth of the distance traveled at 6 MWD with both men - by 104.66-9.24 m (at standard treatment - by 57.07-8.99 m; p <0.001), and women - by 81.17-8.35 m (at standard treatment - by 44.97-6.67 m; p<0.001). Compared to standard treatment, patients of the main group increased their physical capacity (both men and women) 1.8 times, and the achieved state of their physical abilities (511.2-9.38 m; 100.9-1, 96% of the appropriate value (AV)) significantly exceeded the one at standard treatment (481.5-10.59 m; 94.57-1.99% of AV; p<0.01). Physical therapy, which is used with patients having severe COPD, results in an increase in their physical abilities, which significantly improve compared to standard treatment.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the regenerative capacity of gracilis (G) and semitendinosus (ST) tendons, to examine the sensitivity and specificity of signs and symptoms in the assessment of hamstring tendons, and to assess the thickness and insertion site of regenerated tendons. Methods: Thirty sequential knees were subjected to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with semitendinosus and gracilis tendons. After surgery, the patients were followed up clinically with physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results: Overall, 36.66% of the tendons were visible on MRI, whereas 83.33% were palpable. On MRI, the distal insertion site of the regenerated semitendinosus tendon was visible proximal to the landmark of the medial femoral condyle in 28%, at the same level in 16%, and distally in 56% of the cases. Gracilis tendon insertion was visible proximally in 36.66% of cases, at the same level in 10%, and distally in 53.33%. Eleven knees exhibited complete regeneration. Conclusion: Partial or total regeneration of the ST and G tendons was apparent on MRI. Palpation is effective for evaluating regeneration of the ST and G tendons; however, MRI is still the gold standard. ST and G tendons regenerated completely in only a small percentage of patients, limiting reuse as a graft in cases with new ligament injuries of the knee. Level of Evidence II, Prospective comparative study.
