This book maps out a course through the methodological and technological innovations of internet-based training, setting the emphasis on the collaborative character of experiences of learning and on the interactivity of the virtual workshops. On the one hand, this underscores the possibilities offered by the net to make available educational modes centred on the social process that enables learning in an active manner, rather than on the centrality of contents to be passively transferred to the students. On the other hand, it also shows how in the virtual workshops it is possible to develop one's understanding of the phenomena that are the subject of learning as a result of the interaction with the phenomena themselves, reproduced in the computer, acting upon them and observing the consequences of one's own actions. The effect is to underline how this type of model of learning can help to overcome the technology gap between different countries and social groups (the digital divide) and also to make learning more accessible even to disabled students.

Relevance of the appeal to a subject of political symbolics is defined by the growing importance of symbols in the management of mass consciousness in present period. The presented book is devoted to managerial possibilities of using symbols from the state and other political forces. The monograph describes the formation of symbolic spaces of oppositional forces from religious schismatics to the forces of "color revolutions". Correlation of political symbolics and ideology of parties is carried out. The comparative analysis over the countries of the world of valuable and semantic maintenance of the major political symbols of the states - anthems, mottoes, awards, bank notes, national holidays, texts of military oaths and oaths of presidents is carried out. The book is of interest to all, interested in political science, history, cultural science.

This book on Slavic matriarchy is the result of the studies and researches that Evel Gasparini carried out over the span of his lifetime. Intrigued by the possibility of a close link between the collective ownership of the land and the ancient agricultural-matriarchal substrate of Slav culture, Gasparini launched on the titanic enterprise of analysing the archaeological and historical sources of early Slavic civilisation. Basing himself on a concept of culture elaborated in the ethnological field, he brought to light certain contradictions in the application of the Indo-European paradigm to Slavic culture and identified a series of elements illustrating the matriarchal substrate. Exploiting an uncommon knowledge of cultural anthropology and profound linguistic competencies, in this book Gasparini maps out a complex panorama ranging from the economy to the social structure and from the religious traditions to music and dance. Out of print for some time, the book is now proposed in a new, more convenient form, complete with an appendix on Finns and Slavs – which was originally intended as another chapter in the book but was then left out – a detailed preface by Gasparini's disciple Remo Faccani, and a bibliography of the scholar's oeuvre edited by Donatella Possamai.

This chapter examines the years 1866–76 as a period of far-reaching liberal achievements in Germany’s Second Reich, and more modest, temporary liberal successes in Saxony. The first section provides a close examination of the Reichstag elections of February 1867, when Germans confronted the novelty of mass politics. It considers principal campaign themes and key races in order to convey the look and feel of this election contest, and discusses reactions to the election outcome in light of the political parties’ future prospects. A second section examines Saxony’s important but uncertain role in the North German Confederation, and the Reichstag election of August 1867. A third section is devoted to Saxony’s Landtag suffrage reform of 1868. Liberals, Conservatives, and the Saxon government put forward competing agendas for reform. The final reform reflected a mix of liberal and conservative ideals, and the general election of 1869 inaugurated a fragile liberal era.

Masses described as having indistinct margins lack a clear demarcation of a portion or the entire margin from the surrounding tissues. The indistinctness of the margin raises the possibility of infiltration; therefore, this descriptor implies suspicion for malignancy. “Indistinct” differs from “obscured.” A mass with obscured margins insinuates that the surrounding tissues masks or covers the presence of the lesion. This chapter, appearing in the section on asymmetry, mass, and distortion, reviews the key imaging and clinical features, imaging protocols and pitfalls, differential diagnoses, and management recommendations for masses with indistinct margins. Topics discussed include differentiation of the mass with indistinct margins from an obscured mass and focal asymmetry, and how the presence of adjacent features can increase the suspicion of the mass with indistinct margins.

In A Mass Conspiracy to Feed People, David Boarder Giles explores the ways in which capitalism simultaneously manufactures waste and scarcity. Illustrating how communities of marginalized people and discarded things gather and cultivate political possibilities, Giles documents the work of Food Not Bombs (FNB), a global movement of grassroots soup kitchens that recover wasted grocery surpluses and redistribute them to those in need. He explores FNB's urban contexts: the global cities in which late-capitalist economies and unsustainable consumption precipitate excess, inequality, food waste, and hunger. Beginning in urban dumpsters, Giles traces the logic by which perfectly edible commodities are nonetheless thrown out—an act that manufactures food scarcity—to the social order of “world-class” cities, the pathways of discarded food as it circulates through the FNB kitchen, and the anticapitalist political movements the kitchen represents. Describing the mutual entanglement of global capitalism and anticapitalist transgression, Giles captures those emergent forms of generosity, solidarity, and resistance that spring from the global city's marginalized residents.

This chapter asks whether Billy Graham’s legacy will endure, what Franklin Graham’s effect will be, and what the future holds for mass evangelism. Ken Garfield argues that while time will dim his memory among the public, his place in religious history is secure. But how Franklin Graham, who has an undoubtedly different approach from that of his father, will mark that historical legacy remains in question. Opinions vary greatly as to the costs and benefits of Franklin Graham’s role. Finally, Garfield cites the barrage of distractions that threaten the possibility of another figure like Billy Graham rising to such prominence in mass evangelism. Yet he leaves open that question, recognizing that the possibility exists, but most likely in the form of someone quite different from Billy Graham.

Abstract This book is a first cultural legal history of advertising in Britain, tracing the rise of mass advertising circa 1840–1914 and its legal shaping. The emergence of this new system disrupted the perceived foundations of modernity. The idea that culture was organized by identifiable fields of knowledge, experience, and authority came under strain as advertisers claimed to share values with the era’s most prominent fields, including news, art, science, and religiously inflected morality. While cultural boundaries grew blurry, the assumption that the world was becoming progressively disenchanted, itself closely related to concepts of boundaries, was undermined as enchanted experiences multiplied with the transformation of everyday environments by advertising. Non-rational ontologies and a play of mystery became apparent, involving possibilities for metamorphoses, magical efficacy, animated environments, affective connections between humans and things, imaginary worlds and fantasies that informed mundane lifed. These disrupted assumptions that the capitalist economy was a victory of reason. The Rise of Mass Advertising examines how contemporaries came to terms with the disruptive impact by mobilizing legal processes, powers, and concepts. Law was implicated in performing boundary work that preserved the modern sense of field distinctions. Advertising’s cultural meanings and its organization were shaped dialectically vis-à-vis other fields in a process that mainstreamed and legitimized it with legal means, but also construed it as an inferior simulation of the values of a progressive modernity, exhibiting epistemological shortfalls and aesthetic compromises that marked it apart from adjacent fields. The dual treatment meanwhile disavowed the central role of enchantment, in what amounted to a normative enterprise of disenchantment. One of the ironies of this enterprise was that it ultimately drove professional advertisers to embrace enchantment as their peculiar expertise.

If there is a fundamental musical subject of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor, a compositional problem the work explores, it is the tension between two styles cultivated in church music of Bach’s time. One style was modern and drew on up-to-date music such as the instrumental concerto and the opera aria. The other was old-fashioned and fundamentally vocal, borrowing and adapting the style of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, his sixteenth-century contemporaries, and his seventeenth-century imitators. The movements that make up Bach’s Mass can be read as exploring the entire spectrum of possibilities offered by these two styles (the modern and the antique), ranging from movements purely in one or the other to a dazzling variety of ways of combining the two. The work illustrates a fundamental opposition in early-eighteenth-century sacred music that Bach confronts and explores in the Mass.

This is the first of two chapters to examine states that have bucked the regional trend. North Korea stands out as the only state in East Asia that continues to employ mass atrocities as a matter of state policy. This chapter explains why the forces that promoted peace in other parts of the region (state consolidation and responsibility, the developmental trading state, habits of multilateralism, and power politics) failed to achieve the same effects in these two countries. It then looks at the contemporary situation to ascertain the prospects for reform and the likelihood of future reductions in the incidence of mass atrocities. It finds that the state relies on mass coercion to maintain itself in power and that there is little prospect of imminent reform, whilst state collapse remains a viable possibility that could precipitate mass atrocities on a massive scale.

The work’s compositional history and the nature of the sources that transmit it require performers to make decisions about its musical text and about the performing forces used in its realization. The Mass’s editorial history reflects deeply ideological views about Bach’s composition and how it should sound, not just objective reporting on the piece, with consequences for performances that follow specific editions. Things left unspecified by the composer need to be filled in, and every decision—including the choice to add nothing to Bach’s text—represents an interpretation. And the long performance history of the Mass offers a range of possibilities, reflecting a tension between the performance of a work like the Mass in Bach’s time and the tradition inherited from the nineteenth century. Every performance thus represents a point of view about the piece; —there are no neutral performances.

By reading written and visual artefacts of Gertrude Stein’s life, Gertrude Stein’s Transmasculinity reframes earlier scholarship to argue that her gender was transmasculine and that her masculinity was positive rather than a self-hating form of false consciousness. This book considers ways Stein’s masculinity was formed through her relationship with her feminine partner, Alice B. Toklas, and her masculine homosocial bonds with other modernists in her network. This broadens out Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s account of “male homosocial bonding” to include all masculine persons, opening up the possibility of examining Stein’s relationship to Toklas; masculine women such as Jane Heap; and men such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Carl Van Vechten. The Introduction and first four chapters focus on surfacings of Stein’s masculinity within the visual and the textual: in others’ paintings and photographs of her person; her hermetic writings from the first three decades of the twentieth century; and her self-packaging for mass consumption in The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933). Whereas the chapter on The Autobiography underscores Toklas’s role in the formation of Stein’s masculinity and success as a modernist, the final three register the vicissitudes of the homosocial bonds at play in her friendships with Picasso, Hemingway, and Van Vechten. The Coda, which cross-reads Stein’s Everybody’s Autobiography (1937) with the media attention two museum exhibits about her attracted between 2011 and 2012, points to possibilities for future work on the implications of her masculine homosocial bonds with Vichy collaborator Bernard Fäy.

Tivemos novamente uma experiência online e nos sentimos tão perto que chegou a aquecer o coração. Este e-book está composto por mais de 40 trabalhos com muita qualidade, dedicação e atenção à população que envelhece ao nosso redor. Trabalhos que permearam reflexões, percepções, olhares somados a muita experiência, vivência e práticas. Da observação ao tratamento do idosos, da formação às condições de trabalho dos profissionais dedicados a melhorar a saúde, o XVIII Congresso Internacional de Envelhecimento Humano ancorou seus dias nas Novas diretrizes frente ao envelhecimento. Falamos de diversidades e não com olhar (in)diferente mas sim com a premissa de multiplicidade. While Chapters 1–3 examine early modern texts that take the work of spatial representation as an opportunity to consider the labor, dangers, and possibilities of representation, the Conclusion (which takes its title from remarks by Richard Hakluyt in describing how as a child he became fascinated by maps) considers three contemporary objects: a mug, a Mapparium, and recent revisions to the famous boot-shaped silhouette of Louisiana. Each of these objects represents a global or regional area in some novel way: foregrounding their artifice in order to exploit the same cartographic anxieties of representation articulated in works by Spenser, Drayton, and Milton, these objects suggest that the contemporary moment’s efforts to reimagine the space of the world in rhetorically affecting if overtly non-mimetic ways reflects the triumph of an early modern poetics of anxiety, a poetics that might be generative still, in the Anthropocene.

Chapter 1 situates the book within current scholarly debate on the ethical significance of narrative for human existence. It articulates the need for a framework that allows one to explore the ethical complexity of the roles that narratives play in human lives by acknowledging both their ethical potential and risks. It outlines narrative hermeneutics as an approach that enables an analysis of how narratives enlarge and diminish the space of possibilities in which people act, think, experience, and reimagine the world together with others. The chapter maps the trajectory and key concepts of the project, including narrative unconscious and narrative imagination, the relation of which crucially defines one’s sense of the possible. It explains how the book draws on, brings together, and contributes to the following fields: (1) narrative ethics, (2) literary narrative studies and ethical criticism, (3) philosophy of narrative, (4) narrative psychology, and (4) cultural memory studies.

This chapter considers locomotion in living machines, focusing particularly on mammals and on the possibility of designing mammal-like quadrupedal robots. Locomotion is the movement of an organism or a machine from one place to the other, covering a defined minimal distance. In organisms, locomotion usually is driven by a central element and/or appendices. Vertebrates are characterized by the existence of a spine and the mechanics of an endoskeletal system. The amphibio-reptile type of vertebrate locomotion shows oscillations of the body stem mainly in the horizontal, which are coupled to the ground by legs with two long segments. The vertical oscillations of the body stem in the mammal type of quadrupedal locomotion are coupled to the ground by legs with three long segments. For any size of animal and any allometric relation between mass and ground reaction force the resonance mechanisms of gravitational and spring-mass-pendula are tuned to one each other. Elongated feet allow torque exchange with the substrate.

O volume VI do livro “Por Palavras e Gestos: A arte da Linguagem” está organizado em torno de três eixos relevantes para os estudiosos e pesquisadores que desenvolvem trabalhos na área da língua/linguagem e suas interfaces. Na sociedade, a presença de variadas tecnologias contribui para que os textos que circulam em diferentes mídias (impressa, eletrônica e digital) se constituam por intermédio da articulação entre linguagens. Cada vez mais, os textos – orais ou escritos, impressos ou digitais, - são multimodais e multissemióticos, isto é, orquestram em sua constituição sons, vídeos, imagens, escrita, cores etc. Essas mudanças contemporâneas nos textos ampliam e modificam as práticas de leitura e escrita, o que exige não só novas práticas de letramentos para que os sujeitos tenham pleno acesso às informações que circulam e as analisem de forma crítico-reflexiva, mas também, novos olhares para o ensino e para as práticas pedagógicas de formação de leitores no espaço escolar. Halfway House draws on three and a half years of intensive ethnographic fieldwork to open a window on the little-known web of organizations governing prisoner reentry at the frontier of mass incarceration. It tells the story of Joe Badillo, along with a small cast of connected characters, following the ups and downs of his unfolding experience as he leaves jail and searches for a place in the world outside while confronting overwhelming obstacles. Joe’s first stop after release is Bridge House, and the author moves into the program as a researcher around the same time he arrives, the beginnings of the long-term collaboration at the heart of the book. This deeply personal account is weaved into a larger analysis of the halfway house as an institution, a site of punishment and carceral control as well as housing and social support. With a national push under way for decarceration and alternatives to imprisonment, it provides an opportunity to rethink the pitfalls and possibilities of using the halfway house to challenge the worst excesses of mass incarceration.

As communities—both local and international—have struggled to make sense of mass atrocity situations, expectations have increasingly been placed on international criminal courts to render authoritative historical accounts of the episodes of mass violence that fall within their purview. Taking these expectations as its point of departure, Doing Justice to History seeks to understand international criminal courts through the prism of their historical function—critically examining how such courts confront the past by constructing historical narratives concerning both the culpability of the accused on trial and the broader mass atrocity contexts in which they are alleged to have participated. The book argues that international criminal courts are host to struggles for historical justice, discursive contests between different actors vying for judicial acknowledgement of their preferred interpretations of the past. By examining these struggles within different institutional settings, the book surfaces the legitimating qualities of international criminal judgments—illuminating, in particular, what tends to be foregrounded and included within, as well as marginalised and excluded from, the narratives of international criminal courts in practice. What emerges from this account is a sense of the significance of thinking about the emancipatory limits and possibilities of international criminal courts in terms of the historical narratives that are constructed and contested both within and beyond the courtroom in different institutional and societal contexts.

What if racialized mass incarceration is not a perversion of our criminal justice system’s liberal ideals, but rather a natural conclusion? Adam Malka raises this disturbing possibility through a gripping look at the origins of modern policing in the influential hub of Baltimore during and after slavery’s final decades. He argues that America’s new professional police forces and prisons were developed to expand, not curb, the reach of white vigilantes, and are best understood as a uniformed wing of the gangs that controlled free black people by branding them—and treating them—as criminals. The post–Civil War triumph of liberal ideals thus also marked a triumph of an institutionalized belief in black criminality. Mass incarceration may be a recent phenomenon, but the problems that undergird the “new Jim Crow” are very, very old. As Malka makes clear, a real reckoning with this national calamity requires not easy reforms but a deeper, more radical effort to overcome the racial legacies encoded into the very DNA of our police institutions.

Some of the most promising work on mass incarceration, the retributive turn in penal policy, and growing inequalities in the United States employs a historical institutional lens. This work has illuminated the origins of the carceral state and the possibilities for dismantling it, the sources of interstate and cross-national variations in penal policy, and the role of race, gender, and the transformation of the welfare state in the construction of the carceral state. Going forward, illumination of pressing political problems like the carceral state will require that historical institutionalism retain or resurrect some of the qualities that originally made it so distinctive—even if that cuts against the grain of the wider discipline of political science.

The Introduction argues against the possibilities that power in the United States has been usurped by illegitimate elites or an autonomous federal government, or that pluralism has been seriously compromised. American decision making is democratic but populist rather than elitist, and defined by its embedded romantic notions in rejection of pragmatism. The Introduction lays out the proposition that policy making in the United States is determined by a broad democratic consensus. In spite of episodic pitfalls and threats to democratic processes, mass preferences prevail in policy making rather than the far more common assumption that conspiracies of illegitimate elites rule the nation. Democratic consent is formed more through an ecology of detached roles than through coherent and objective consideration.
