This chapter discusses the work–energy theorem, which is developed from Newton’s second law, and defines the kinetic and potential energies of the system. While there is some vector calculus involved, it has been kept to the bare minimum and the reader should not require in-depth knowledge to understand the salient points. If there is a net force on the particle, it accelerates in the direction of the unbalanced force. The force is a central force if it depends only on the distance between the point on which the force acts and the coordinate origin. Using Stokes’s theorem, potential energies are thoroughly discussed. The chapter also discusses spherically symmetric potentials, isotropic force, force on systems of particles, centre of mass coordinates and rigid bodies.

This chapter studies Maxwell theory by defining the electromagnetic potential and field as well as the force exerted by an external field on a particle carrying an electric charge. In Maxwell theory, the fundamental mathematical quantity representing electromagnetic phenomena is a field of covariant vectors (or a field of 1-forms), the electromagnetic potential, with components Aμ‎(Xν‎) in a given inertial frame with Minkowski coordinates Xν‎. A quantity derived from the potential plays a central role because it is this quantity rather than the potential itself which directly represents observable phenomena. In addition, this chapter integrates the equation of motion for the cases of uniform rectilinear and circular motion. It follows the four-dimensional approach, which, being more efficient and transparent, can also give the main results in 3-vector notation.

The term “dilution effect” describes scenarios where pathogen transmission is reduced as host diversity increases. Theoretical frameworks exist to predict conditions under which dilution effects may arise, with vector-borne diseases (VBDs) being particularly susceptible to host diversity. However, to date, empirical investigation of dilution effects has been restricted to a few temperate VBD systems. We review the potential contribution of dilution effects for VBDs of greatest public health importance in low-income, typically tropical, countries. Using examples, we discuss how the underlying ecology of pathogen and vector species combine to determine the response of the disease system to biodiversity. We review cases demonstrating how manipulation of host-species diversity has altered human exposure risk. We caution that attempts to control VBDs by manipulating host diversity are unlikely to succeed, and may even be detrimental, without having a detailed understanding of the local ecology of the specific VBD and environmental setting.

This chapter outlines the patterns and occurrences of major diseases transmitted by arthropod vectors, highlighting the need for behavior-based control strategies, first, focusing on mosquito control tools with an emphasis on how knowledge of mosquito behavioral ecology may help vector control programmes. The potential of sound traps, swarm manipulation, ‘lure and kill’, radiation, transgenicm and symbiont-based approaches will be outlined, and how mosquito behavior influences these vector control strategies. Secondly, tick control strategies, as well as pheromone-assisted tick control will be reviewed, with special reference to pheromone-assisted matrix for application to vegetation, tick decoy, bont tick decoy, and the deployment of confusants. Thirdly, how Chagasic bugs are traditionally controlled will be summarized. Also, we highlight emerging chemical-based attraction methods, employing bug pheromones, as well as the use of entomopathogens. This review is not a thorough one, as it should only instruct students on how to use arthropod behavior to control arthropod vectors.

This chapter studies the structure of Maxwell’s equations in a vacuum and the action from which they are derived, while emphasizing the consequences of their gauge invariance. Gauge invariance, on the one hand, allows one of the components of the magnetic potential to be chosen freely. Here, the chapter shows how the gauge-invariant version of the Maxwell equations in the vacuum can also be derived directly by extremizing. On the other hand, the chapter argues that gauge invariance imposes a constraint on the initial conditions such that in the end the general solution has only two ‘degrees of freedom’. Finally, the chapter develops the Hamiltonian formalisms in the Maxwell theory and compares them to the formalisms using non-gauge-invariant or massive vector fields.

Epidemic typhus is now a rare disease, but previously it was worldwide in distribution. Typically epidemic typhus occurred during instances in which humans were forced to live in crowded, cold and unhygienic conditions (eg aboard ships, in jails, and during military operations). Until recently man was considered to be the only reservoir for R.prowazekii, but in 1975 a new sylvatic cycle involving the flying squirrel and its ectoparasites was discovered in the eastern United States.Murine typhys occurs throughout the world. Its epidemiology is primarily linked to the distribution of rats and the rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis. However, recently both a new reservoir (opossums in southern California) and a new potential vector (the cat flea) have been discovered.Control or avoidance of the vectors are the cornerstones of strategies to prevent morbidity and mortality.

An evolutionary suggests that health interventions can reduce not only the frequency of infectious disease but also the harmfulness of the causal organisms. Interventions that may accomplish this dual goal include hygienic investments such as vector proofing of housing, provisioning of safe water supplies, infrastructure that blocks transmission of durable propagules, the prevention of attendant-borne transmission in hospitals and reductions in the potential for sexual transmission. Vaccines can also reduce the frequency of infection and the harmfulness of the target organisms if they are designed to inhibit selectively the harmful variants in the target population. These approaches should help suppress the evolution of antimicrobial resistance because benign variants causing mild or asymptomatic infections will be less exposed to antimicrobial treatment, reducing the strength of selection for antimicrobial resistance. The interventions should improve health at low cost, which would be especially important for low-income populations.

It offers a global perspective on invasive nematodes by presenting 17 chapters with information on more than 100 nematodes and their potential threat in different countries. Each nematode entry includes information on: authentic identification; geographical distribution; risk of introduction; host ranges; symptoms; biology and ecology; planting material liable to carry the nematode(s) and its vector, if any; chance of establishment; likely impact; phytosanitary measures; and a detailed account of diagnosis procedures, such as sampling, isolation/detection and identification with morphological and molecular characterization. The aim of the book is to provide basic and advanced knowledge on invasive nematodes with a global perspective, and it targets practitioners, professionals, scientists, researchers, students and government officials working on plant quarantine and biosecurity with regard to plant-parasitic nematodes.

Substance use disorders have been linked to HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic. Injecting drug use can serve as a mode of viral transmission and in some parts of the world and among certain populations is the primary vector of transmission. Substances of misuse implicated in HIV transmission include alcohol, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and Ecstasy. Use of both non-injecting drugs and alcohol is also associated with increased sexual and other risk-taking behaviors and seroconversion. In addition, substance use disorders and other psychiatric disorders often coexist and can have profound effects on the medical management of HIV/AIDS as well as on a person’s social interaction and quality of life. Many people with HIV/AIDS therefore suffer from triple diagnoses necessitating comprehensive evaluation and treatment and a team approach involving medical, mental health, and substance use caregjvers. Treatment can include detoxification, harm reduction, individual, group, and family therapy, medication, and awareness of potential drug interactions.

The research about the relation of mining and health has traditionally been carried out ex post, that is, with evaluation of the effects of mining on the health profiles of miners or exposed people, time after to the start of this economic activity. This limits the evaluation of the impact of mining on health, given the lack of knowledge about health indicators prior to the start of mining, or due to the absence of a baseline to analyze series of time. In addition, specific indicators such as vector-borne diseases (for example, malaria morbidity or mortality in endemic areas with mining activity), respiratory problems, effects of contamination with materials used in mining, among other topics, are generally investigated in illegal mining contexts. In Colombia there are few publications about the health profiles in legal mining areas, prior to the mining phase, as a determining aspect to establish a baseline that allows quantitative evaluation of the impacts of this economic activity on the health of the exposed people. This research analyzes the health profile of the residents of a geographic area with the presence of underground gold mining in Buriticá-Antioquia, according to sociodemographic conditions during 2019. The central outcomes of this profile were risk factors related to health services and lifestyle, felt morbidity, overweight and obesity, high blood pressure, STIs, breast disorders, lung conditions, all with their potential socio-economic risks.

The Analytic Element Method provides a foundation to solve boundary value problems commonly encountered in engineering and science. The goals are: to introduce readers to the basic principles of the AEM, to provide a template for those interested in pursuing these methods, and to empower readers to extend the AEM paradigm to an even broader range of problems. A comprehensive paradigm: place an element within its landscape, formulate its interactions with other elements using linear series of influence functions, and then solve for its coefficients to match its boundary and interface conditions with nearly exact precision. Collectively, sets of elements interact to transform their environment, and these synergistic interactions are expanded upon for three common types of problems. The first problem studies a vector field that is directed from high to low values of a function, and applications include: groundwater flow, vadose zone seepage, incompressible fluid flow, thermal conduction and electrostatics. A second type of problem studies the interactions of elements with waves, with applications including water waves and acoustics. A third type of problem studies the interactions of elements with stresses and displacements, with applications in elasticity for structures and geomechanics. The Analytic Element Method paradigm comprehensively employs a background of existing methodology using complex functions, separation of variables and singular integral equations. This text puts forth new methods to solving important problems across engineering and science, and has a tremendous potential to broaden perspective and change the way problems are formulated.
