Many wave energy devices are currently studied. In this thesis we focus on two specific devices: the Oscillating Water Column (OWC), and the buoys. In the first part of this thesis we examine the effects of coastline geometry on the performance of an OWC. Under the assumption of inviscid irrotationnal flow, we develop a linear theory for the velocity potential for the case of a coastline of arbitrary apex angle. Scattering and radiation problems are solved separately using eigenfunctions expansions, and are then combined to study the energy extraction rate. Numerical simulations for a convex and a concave corner are considered and comparison with an OWC at the tip of a thin breakwater and on a straight coast are discussed. Assuming that the multiple-turbine system can be controlled over a wide range of frequencies, we study the effects of fixed chamber size and air compressibility on the optimal power extraction. A simpler way of optimization is then develop and we show that this simpler scheme can achieve almost as high an efficiency as the idealized many-frequency optimization. In the second part of this thesis, we first model theoretically an array of cylinders and then apply the theory developped to an array of buoys. However, numerical difficulties encountered for the array of cylinders have led to the conclusion that the theory developed is numerically inefficient, although it is accurate.

Two-way power flow is nothing new and has been in practical use using line commutated converters for at least 50 years. With these types of converters, reversal of power flow can be achieved by increasing the firing angle of the devices beyond 90 degrees thus producing a negative DC voltage. Line commutated converters have several known disadvantages including: the direct current cannot be reversed, the power factor decreases when the firing angle increases and the harmonics are high on the line current. To tackle the above problems a forced commutated converter can be used. The power factor can be unity and the harmonics can be reduced. Many researchers have used PWM with different control techniques to serve the above purposes. In each converter arm, they used a forced commutated device with an antiparallel diode. Under the rectification mode of operation the current path is preponderantly through the diodes and under the inverter operation the current flows preponderantly through the forced commutated devices. Although their results were encouraging and gave a unity power factor with nearly sinusoidal current, the main disadvantage was that there were difficulties in controlling the power factor when the system is needed to operate at lagging or leading power factor. In this work, a new idea was introduced by connecting two GTOs antiparallel instead of a diode and a GTO. A single phase system using two GTO converters which are connected in series was built. One converter operates as a rectifier and the other converter operates as an inverter. In the case of the inversion mode and in each inverter arm one GTO is operated as a diode simply by switching it always on and the other antiparallel GTO is operated as a normal device to carry the inverter current. In case of the rectification mode, in each arm one GTO is always off and the other GTP is operated as a controlled device. The main advantage is that the system can be operated at lagging or leading power factor.

The present essay approaches two different conceptions of Enlightenment and modernity. The first part considers Michel Foucault’s understanding of modernity as an “attitude” or “critical ethos” belonging to that age, that necessarily questions that which we have come to be in various contingent processes (how we have constituted ourselves as subjects); the second part considers Jürgen Habermas’s proposal, which invites us to understand modernity as an “unfinished project”, as a certain potential or rational ideal that is still to be carried out. Towards the end of the essay both stances are confronted, whereby an attempt is made to engage elements retrieved from each in a productive dialogue, and to raise some criticisms and observations regarding the sociohistorical conceptions of each author.
El presente trabajo busca aproximarse a dos concepciones distintas sobre la Ilustración y la modernidad. La primera parte considera la comprensión del filósofo francés Michel Foucault sobre la modernidad como una “actitud” o ethos crítico de la propia época, que pasa necesariamente por una problematización de aquello que en distintos procesos contingentes hemos llegado a ser (cómo nos hemos constituido como sujetos); la segunda parte se enfoca en la propuesta del alemán Jürgen Habermas, que invita a comprender la modernidad como un “proyecto inacabado”, como un cierto potencial o ideal racional aún por realizar. Hacia el final del ensayo se confrontan ambas posturas, tratando de que emerja un diálogo productivo que nos permita rescatar elementos de cada proyecto y planteando algunas críticas y observaciones soore las concepciones sociohistóricas de cada autor.

This thesis is devoted to the study and designs of two important proportional weirs having the discharge-head characteristics of Q α H 2/3 In the first design a geometrically simple weir in the form of a rectangular weir over a inverted V-notch (Chimney weir) is presented. This weir gives for all flows above a threshold depth a discharge proportional to H 2/3 within a maximum percentage error of ±1.5, (measured above a reference plane) within certain limits of head. Second design is concerned with the self-basing weir in which a portion of the weir above the crest acts as a base. This design is achieved by using the complementary weir profile of a Quadratic weir above the parabolic base which has the significant property of fast convergence. This weir gives discharge for all flows above the threshold depth, proportional to (head)2/3 measured above a reference plane, with increasing accuracy as head increases. Experiments with these two weirs confirm the theory by giving a constant average Coefficient of Discharge (Cd) of 0.62. The importance of these weirs as a sensitive discharge measuring device in field and laboratory is highlighted.

A simulation program has been developed to facilitate the investigation and analysis of power semiconductor devices under the reverse-bias condition. The electrostatic potential distribution is solved by using Poisson's equation alone, with particular attention to the neighborhood of avalanche breakdown. Because of its generality and efficiency, the program emerges as a powerful engineering tool for the design of power devices incorporating special junction termination techniques. Results are presented for a DMOS structure to illustrate the improvement in breakdown voltage when a field plate is applied. Numerical solution techniques for solving elliptic partial differential equations in a multi-material domain are discussed. The discretization of this domain is nonuniform in general due to its highly nonuniform physical parameters. By careful selection of grid lines near interfaces, the difference equation coefficients are considerably simplified. The resultant matrix of coefficients is symmetric even though Neumann boundary conditions are specified.

This dissertation consists of two studies, both related to the impacts of economic and political factors on fuel choice in electric power generation. The primary purpose of the first study is to estimate the degree of price-induced interfuel substitution between three fossil fuels in West European power generation. The problem is studied within two restricted flexible cost functions, a translog model and a Generalized Leontief model. The results show that both models generate reasonable short-run responses to changes in relative fossil fuel prices. In general the degree of short-run interfuel substitution is found to be substantial, a result that is partly explained by the large share of multi-fuel plants in West European power generation. In addition, by deriving the shadow price of capital from the Generalized Leontief cost function the long-run own- and cross-price elasticities of fossil fuel demand are presented. Overall, however, this approach is not able to produce empirically reliable long-run estimates. Finally, the empirical investigation also indicates that public policies and changes in system load factors have had significant impacts on fossil fuel choices in West European power generation. The main purpose of the second study is to explore what factors have been the most important in determining the choices between different electricity supply alternatives in Zimbabwe since 1980. In a first step the economic costs of the available electricity supply options are estimated and secondly these costs are contrasted with the actual choices made by the electricity authorities. It is shown that in the early 1980s the electricity supply choices in Zimbabwe were dictated by a self-sufficiency policy, and accordingly least-cost alternatives were rejected. Due to a new political environment, financial problems and pressures from the World Bank, the step towards least-cost choices was substantial in the 1980s and the 1990s, although not complete. This and the ongoing trend towards higher discount rates imply that thermal power, be it coal- or gas-fired power, probably will dominate future electric power investments in Zimbabwe.

With the ongoing push for wireless systems to accommodate more users and support higher data rates more efficient modulation schemes have been created that are more advanced than simple FM and AM modulation used for radio broadcasting. These modulation schemes, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), suffer from high peak to average power ratios. Standard Class A and Class AB amplifiers cannot simultaneously achieve good linearity and efficiency, and therefore there has been an increase in the development of new topologies to combat this issue. Common features to these circuits is power combining of two or more separate transistors. In this work, we consider various ways of two-source power combining and identify four topologies of interest. We notice that linear power-efficient amplifiers reported to date are based upon two of the identified combining strategies. We believe that no amplifiers have been reported that leverage the other two alternatives. This work produces a fully-functional amplifier based on one of these alternatives. The prototypes are intended to serve as concept verification of the architecture and hence are implemented at lower (1 MHz) frequencies.

The multivariate two-sample tests provide a means to test the match between two multivariate distributions. Although many tests exist in the literature, relatively little is known about the relative power of these procedures. The studies reported in the thesis contrasts the effectiveness, in terms of power, of seven such tests with a Monte Carlo study. The relative power of the tests was investigated against location, scale, and correlation alternatives.

Effects of the tube array, such as in-line and staggered, on void-fraction distribution and heat transfer coefficient around a tube were experimentally investigated. The test section was vertical duct with inner size of 90 × 90 mm2. Diameter of the tubes was 15 mm, and the pitch-to-diameter ratio was 1.5 for both tube bundles. Working fluids were air and water. Experiments were carried out at superficial gas velocity defined at minimum area section, Jg, of 0.10 to 0.89 m/s, superficial liquid velocity, Jl, of 0.1 to 0.3 m/s, under the atmospheric condition. Measurements of void-fraction distribution were carried out using X-ray radiography. In addition, heat transfer coefficient around a tube was measured and the heat transfer coefficients in association with the flow regime and the void-fraction distribution were evaluated. Time-average void-fraction was higher around upstream of a tube than that of downstream at bubbly flow condition for both bundles. Under intermittent flow condition, time-average void fraction at the maximum gap were higher than that around the other points in both tube bundles. For in-line tube bundle, enhancement of the heat transfer clearly appeared between ±90 to 180°. For staggered tube bundle, the heat transfer increased all over the pipe.

Анотація:
Firms in global value chains (GVCs) are granular and exert bargaining power over the terms of trade. We show that these features are crucial to understanding the well-established variation in prices and pass-through across importers and exporters. We develop a novel theory of prices in GVCs, which tractably nests a wide range of bilateral concentration and bargaining power configurations. We test and evaluate the models predictions using a novel dataset merging transaction-level U.S. import data with balance sheet data for both U.S. importers and foreign exporters. Our pricing framework enhances traditional frameworks in the literature in accurately predicting price changes following a tariff shock. The results shed light on the role of firms in determining the tariff pass-through onto import prices.
