The inconsistency between pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours called the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap, has been reported in many scenarios relating to sustainable actions. However, the reasons for it are not entirely clear. It has been proposed that the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap is driven by the moral dimension whereby moral attitudes fail to translate into subsequent moral behaviours. If so, the lacking integration of moral dimension into the environmental domain serves as a generalisable factor to improve the accuracy of predicting pro-environmental behaviours. Hence, we aimed to explore (i) whether the addition of a moral element to the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) shows the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap and (ii) whether the ethics position questionnaire (EPQ) is a more suitable measure of morality within the TPB framework, as compared to that of moral norms. The results from 181 US MTurk participants disclosed that the addition of the moral element to the TPB framework did not reveal the presence of the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap, despite both moral norms and idealism significantly predicting pro-environmental attitudes. The findings do not indicate whether moral norms or idealism should be used as a more accurate measure of morality within the TPB framework, although relativism was found to have no significant effects. Further investigation of why the moral element does not reveal the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap within the TPB framework predicting pro-environmental behaviours would help understand the reasons why rational choice models tend to overestimate theoretical vs. real-life engagement with sustainability.

Abstract The use of reclaimed and recycled building materials is considered a pro-environmental behaviour and studying the factors that influence this is a first step towards establishing such behaviour. It is therefore essential to understand how pro-environmental behaviours develop. This article investigates the relationships between the influential factors on behaviours that help reduce waste in the construction industry, focussing on New Zealand architects. The study utilizes an online questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), which is made up of attitude, subjective norm, intention, and perceived behavioural control. The study reveals that the attitudes, intentions and perceived behavioural control of architects are strong predictors of pro-environmental behaviour while the subjective norm is a weak predictor. Knowledge of architects about regulations and certificates related to recycled materials will influence the pro-environmental practices. One of the obstacles in this way is the attitude of people and architects can play an important role in changing it. These findings show that architects need to be informed about related regulations and educated about different ways of integrating these materials.

Great scientific effort has been devoted to understanding what drives pro-environmental behaviour, yet the question of the environmental attitude–behaviour gap remains unanswered. Studies have indicated that self-regulation and executive functions may reduce such a gap by increasing individuals’ ability to maintain attention on present actions and to resist goal-conflicting temptations. Given the inherent association of self-regulation and executive functions with dispositional mindfulness, we carried out a cross-sectional study to test the hypothesis of the role of dispositional mindfulness in explaining the phenomenon. Our results showed that higher levels of dispositional mindfulness, measured via the Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), are related to a higher tendency to perform pro-environmental behaviour, and that the observing facet of the construct would predict higher pro-environmental behaviour scores. Interestingly, we also found the acting with awareness and nonjudging factors to be moderators of the relationship between pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours, suggesting that enhanced awareness of the present moment may favour higher congruence between attitudes and behaviours, and that higher acceptance may favour more adaptive coping strategies to the climate challenge. Our findings provide a novel contribution to the understanding of the relationship between mindfulness and pro-environmental behaviour and support the perspective that self-regulation skills would contribute to reducing the environmental attitude–behaviour gap.

Food waste remains an ongoing problem in hotel operations, and changing employees’ behaviour is key to tackling this issue. Analysing the influences on employees’ working practices can help to drive pro-environmental behaviour changes that reduce food waste, thus supporting the UN’s SDG 12: ensuring responsible consumption and production patterns. This study used the theory of planned behaviour as its theoretical framework and empirical data generated through participant observation, analysis of organisational documents, and semi-structured interviews in luxury hotels to examine waste drivers among employees. The findings suggest that hotel workers adopt a rational rather than moral lens toward food waste. Moreover, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control strongly influence intentions to perform pro-environmental behaviours. Positive attitudes and strong subjective norms propel employees toward pro-environmental behaviours while a lack of perceived control acts as a constraining force.

Successfully addressing the environmental crisis requires current generations to change behaviours for the benefit of future generations. Perceptions of responsibility towards future generations have been found to increase pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours. Therefore, methods which enhance feelings of responsibility, or intergenerational reciprocity, are central to tackling the environmental crisis. Research shows intergenerational reciprocity can be increased through the process of reflecting on the heroic actions and sacrifices of past generations. However, the impact of reflecting on a negatively framed ‘difficult’ past remains unknown. Via an online, quasi-experimental questionnaire, this study utilised the context of the ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland, known as ‘The Troubles’, to explore how reflecting on a difficult past influences pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours. The results suggest that reflecting on The Troubles has no effect on pro-environmental attitudes or behaviour. The salience of negative feelings about The Troubles may have supressed the generation of intergenerational reciprocity and environmental concern

Students’ behavior related to environmental protection and conservation is very important to discuss. Action pro-environmental every people, through the change of daily habits and behavior, is needed to decrease environmental problems and promote a clean, healthy, and unpolluted environment. This study aims to analyze the locus of control’s effect and attitude toward pro-environmental behaviours’ effect on the students’ pro-environmental behavior. This study uses an online survey method. A total of 386 respondents were collected. Therefore, the sample in the study amounted to 386 respondents. We used quantitative and structural equation modeling methods to examine the hypotheses. The data were processed by Amos software version 23. This study found that locus of control affects the attitude toward pro-environmental behavior. The locus of control and attitude toward pro-environmental behavior also positively affect students’ pro-environmental behavior. We invented that attitudes toward pro-environmental behavior did not mediate the effect of students’ locus of control on the pro-environmental behaviours of the students. The suggestion to improving the students’ locus of control and attitude related to the environment to gain and enhance the students’ pro-environmental behavior. The originality or value of this study gives a new insight into understanding the interaction between students’ locus of control and attitude toward the environmental behavior of the students in Indonesia.

Globally, the organic food market is the most successful green market. Young consumers, the decision-makers of the future, are perceived as being more environmentally concerned than older cohorts. The aim of this study was to consider young consumers’ attitudes and behaviours concerning organic food, where the organic food market in the UK is more mature than in Poland. Empirical research was conducted using a web-based survey questionnaire (CAWI) with consumers (n = 973) in both countries. The associations between four constructs (general pro-social attitudes, green consumption values, receptivity to green communication, and buying behaviour) were considered using CB-SEM. We extended the model with two new constructs to explain young consumers’ purchases of organic food. UK respondents are significantly more conscious green consumers with higher environmental attitude intensity than Polish residents. Intensity of pro-environmental attitude components influences directly and indirectly the choice of organic food. People with a higher intensity of pro-environmental attitudes are significantly more likely to choose organic food. Perception of organic food influences purchases only in Poland. The components of pro-environmental attitudes and perception of organic food alone do not explain the variability in behaviour, despite a good fit of the model. This suggests that other independent variables may be of influence.

Values serve as guiding principles and are typically viewed as determinants of beliefs and behaviour. In the current study we explored the relationships between basic human values, ecological beliefs, and pro-environmental behavior. The present study is oriented towards investigating the connections between basic human values, ecological beliefs and pro-ecological behaviour. The study was conducted on a sample of 551 respondents – Bulgarians, between 13 and 90 years old (X=27.38; SD=13.34). For the purpose of the study, questionnaires were used to measure value orientations, attitudes towards climate change and pro-ecological behaviours. The results indicated that value orientations focusing on concern for the well-being of others and nature, as well as on preserving traditions, social order, and security, were associated with ecological beliefs and pro-environmental behaviours. We also found that males had significantly higher levels of denial beliefs of climate change, while females had higher levels of solastalgia and perceived environmental efficacy. The study contributes to a better understanding of the psychological prerequisites and motives underlying pro-environmental behavior, with the findings being applicable to the development of information campaigns and interventions aimed at promoting sustainable practices and addressing climate change.

Pro-environmental behaviors are influenced by individuals’ pro-environmental attitudes and environmental efficacy, among many other factors. However, attitude-behavior models are inconsistent on whether and how attitudes, efficacy, and behaviors should match in specificity or generality, and on the moderation effect of efficacy. This study first tests a simple model including direct and moderating relationships between pro-environmental attitudes, environmental efficacy, and pro-environmental behaviors. Then it examines relationships among subscales matched or mismatched in their respective specific or general domain of environmental attitudes (concern, values), environmental efficacy (self, collective), and pro-environmental behaviors (private, public). Secondary data come from an overall sample of 11,000 respondents across 11 countries, with n = 1,000 from each country. Pro-environmental attitudes and efficacy have direct relationships with pro-environmental behavior, but efficacy has little moderation effect. Different combinations of (mis)matched measures produce slightly different results, with the most variance explained, counter to hypotheses, by two mismatched models. Results are generally consistent across countries.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a variety of factors on environmental attitudes and behaviors. Studies have addressed a number of issues that are related to environmental matters. This examination extends the research in this area by incorporating educational attainment, political ideology, gender, marriage and family formation, religiosity and subjective spirituality, race and ethnicity, as well as several sociodemographic influences. The 2010 General Social Survey is selected for the analysis because it is the most recent data available and contains items pertaining to environmental concern and behavior, and the independent and control variables. Directions for future research in the area will be discussed.

This study investigated primary, secondary and tertiary students' attitudes towards environmental issues, their involvement in environmental activities, and the environmental values which underlie their concerns about caring for the environment It explored developmental changes in environmental attitudes, behavioural involvement and values as students pass through childhood and adolescence into early adulthood. The study also examined relationships among values, attitudes and behavioural actions, and aimed to determine whether values are better predictors of behavioural actions than are attitudes in the area of environmental conservation. A Rasch psychometric model of modem test theory for Likert-style questionnaires was applied to examine and improve the internal consistency and validity of three measuring scales, namely, an environmental attitude scale (EAS), an environmental behaviour scale (EBS) and an environmental value scale (EVS), all three of which were constructed for this investigation. After a preliminary and a pilot study using cross-sectional designs, final results from three groups of subjects totalling 423 students (148 primary school year 7 students, 151 high school year 10 students and 124 university first year students) who completed the 30-item EAS, the 15-item EBS and the 10-item EVS, showed that the items from the EAS and the EBS conformed satisfactorily with the Rasch model, and although the EVS was satisfactory for the purpose of the thesis, it requires further refinement. This study did not provide evidence to support the theoretical argument that values, rather than attitudes, are better predictors of environmental behaviour; however, it demonstrated that values remained consistent across six different environmental issues and across the three age groups, which provides some support for Rokeach's postulation that values transcend situations and underlie people's attitudes and behaviour towards specific objects and situations. Results from formal statistical analyses indicated that: (a) there was a developmental shift towards more positive environmental attitudes from primary school aged students through high school students to university students; however, further analysis revealed that the positive shift towards pro-environmental attitudes with increasing education levels was evident among female subjects only; (b) with respect to environmental behavioural involvement, primary school students participated more actively in environmental activities than high school and university students; this reversed trend was evident particularly with primary school male students; (c) responses to the EVS remained constant across the three age levels; (d) female students in all three age groups were significantly more pro-environment than male students on all three scales; (e) more primary school students (particularly male students) chose economic benefit as their main reason for participation in pro-environmental activities than did the other two groups of subjects; (f) primary school students thought they obtained their information about the environment mainly from school education while high school and university students received their information mainly from the mass media. Implications arising from this study suggest that: (a) a longitudinal panel study following a cohort of students from pre-adolescence through adolescence or even through early adulthood should be carried out in order to better understand any changing relationships among environmental attitudes, behaviours and values; (b) subjects from different socio-economic backgrounds and geographical areas should be examined to establish the generalizability of the findings from this study; (c) further exploration of the possible contribution of an environmental values education to changes in attitudes and behaviours with respect to the environment is required; (d) an investigation into the use of media as a means of developing positive environmental attitudes and values should be carried out; and (e) financial incentives seem to play a significant role in the decision of young people to get involved in environmental activities and this may need to be taken into account if a context to facilitate active participation is desired.

Medicines have a large carbon footprint, and the aim of this research was to identify ways to reduce the carbon footprint of medicines in hospital pharmacy departments. Factors affecting pharmacists' and pharmacy technicians' engagement with pro-environmental behaviours regarding medicines' disposal in Australian and UK hospitals were explored. Environmental attitudes, environmental knowledge, environmental concern, and organisational factors that either help or prevent appropriate disposal of unwanted medicines and their packaging were investigated. Currently, many pharmacists believe medicines' disposal is outside their current scope of practice. Organisation-wide environmental education programs are needed to increase awareness and improve behaviours.

Today it has become critical that people adapt their behavior and lifestyles to environmental constraints. Teachers are supposed to teach pupils to accept personal responsibility in regard to these problems. The pedagogies of Waldorf and public schools have different outlooks on nature, hence it was hypothesized that Waldorf and public teachers would differ in regard to pro-environmental behavior and factors explaining such actions. An e-questionnaire measuring pro-environmental behavior, biospheric and altruistic values, feelings of personal responsibility, and pro-environmental attitudes was filled out by 68 Waldorf teachers and 73 public teachers from different municipalities in Sweden. The results suggest that Waldorf teachers report higher biospheric values (partial eta2 = .46, p < .001), more pro-environmental behavior (partial eta2 = .39, p < .001), more feelings of personal responsibility, (partial eta2 = .32, p < .001), and higher altruistic values (partial eta2 = .12, p < .001), than public school teachers do. There were a few limitations in reliability and possibly with social desirability. However, the present study paves the way for an understanding of how pedagogy can be of help in preventing further environmental problems.

The purpose of this study is to examine the potential for yoga to contribute to sustainability objectives via pro-social and environmental attitudes and behaviours. It locates core principles and concepts embedded within the meaning of the term interconnectedness in both western and eastern histories of ideas, with particular emphasis on yoga, integralism, and ecological theory. It evaluates and investigates yoga's potential toward recognition or realisation of a non-dualist paradigm of interconnectedness that might invoke social and environmental change. It explores how a tripartite model of yoga understands interconnectedness at a deeper level than the mechanistic worldview, and could support proactive measures toward a more fair, just, and sustainable world. It locates cultural barriers to yoga's potential for a pro-environmental and pro-social worldview and lifestyle, suggesting options to advance yoga's ecological values by improved education and scholarship. To access suitable models, the study learnt and practiced traditional teachings, applied them to contemporary issues and sought perspectives from under-represented sources. To answer research questions on how yoga can benefit contemporary issues, it also critically reflected on how scholarship impacts upon the communities from which the knowledge is obtained. The project contributes new knowledge on interconnectedness, its meaning and historic cultural context. It contributes a novel epistemic and methodological framework consistent with traditional knowledge, particularly relevant for progress on culturally appropriate scholarship in yoga studies. The project is the first of its kind to deeply explore the meanings of the word interconnectedness. It is one of the most committed attempts to date to seek out a doctrinal model from the traditions that can embrace both transcendent and immanent aspects of yoga in both theory and practice toward a coherent eco-yoga model. In doing so it engages with a wide lacuna between rhetorical appeals to yoga as a sustainability praxis and mind body intervention by supplementing existing theory with some of the traditional knowledge to explain how yoga works, and how it can help to meet sustainability objectives like cultivating an interconnected worldview. The project calls to seriously examine the legacy of colonial classification systems and methodological issues in the representation of yoga cultures. It appeals for the review of academic conventions among yoga scholars and for the prioritisation of sincere regard for the impact of scholarship on yoga’s intangible cultural heritage value, particularly considering yoga’s protection under UNESCO.

The most devastating effects of climate change may be avoided if humans reduce activities that produce greenhouse gases and engage instead in more sustainable ecological behaviors. The current mixed methods study of 279 undergraduate students explored whether environmental worldview, belief in climate change, knowledge of climate change, personal efficacy, and intention to address climate change influenced participants’ engagement in ecological behavior. Results indicated that those with a stronger intention to address climate change and a more ecocentric worldview reported significantly more ecological behavior. Next, the study examined whether participants’ intentions to address climate change mediated the relationship between their belief in climate change and engagement in ecological behavior and whether intentions mediated the relationship between efficacy and ecological behavior. Intentions to address climate change did not mediate the relationship between belief and ecological behavior but fully mediated the relationship between efficacy to address climate change and ecological behavior.

Ten whale watches were completed between October 2014 and January 2015 using a quasi-experimental design with and without balloon debris retrievals. A link to a post-trip electronic survey was sent two weeks after whale watch tours to adult participants who volunteered to take part in this study. This study showed how witnessing the retrieval of marine debris while listening to a conservation message did have an effect on the reported intended pro-environmental behaviors. Overall, those who were exposed to the balloon retrieval mentioned conservation themes within the open-ended questions more than the control group. This study suggests that pro-environmental changes intended behaviors, attitudes and knowledge did occur and may have produced thoughts and actions in individuals who are now more enlightened and aware about marine debris issues. Contrary to changes in attitudes and intended behaviors, there were no noticeable impacts on reported actual behavior changes from the participants after the whale watch tour.

Reports from the IPCC have been consistent in their findings: climate change is happening and human activity is the cause. The temperature of the earth’s climate has been steadily rising since the industrial revolution, with profoundly negative consequences for the natural environment. Britain is amongst the top 10 global contributors towards climate change, producing more CO2 per capita than China, and yet little is known about the relationship the British public have with the natural environment. Drawing upon DEFRA’s 2009 Survey of Public Attitudes and Behaviours Towards the Environment, a nationally representative sample of the UK, this study aims to (1) explore environmental attitudes in the DEFRA sample; (2) identify the types of environmental concern that exist in the UK and; (3) examine how environmental concern is associated with pro-environmental behaviours. The overall goal is to develop a better understanding this attitude-behaviour relationship. The thesis has 3 main findings. First, environmental concern is formed of three environmental attitudes: (a) a cognitive appraisal of plant and animal welfare (ecocentric attitude); (b) welfare of the human race (human-centric attitude); and (c) a prioritisation of the self, alongside dismissal of environmental problems (denial).Second, members of the British public can be assigned to one of four groups based on their environmental concern: Pro-environment, Neutral, Disengaged and Paradoxical (the latter 2 groups are apathetic towards environmental issues though in different ways).Third, when examining behaviour variation across these environmental concern groups, it was found, unsurprisingly, that membership of the pro- environmental group is strongly predictive of pro-environmental behaviour. What was surprising was that pro-environmental concern predicts a variety of behaviours, both easy and challenging (i.e. easy behaviour such as recycling household waste as well more challenging behaviour such as an increase use of public transportation over driving), whereas previous studies have typically found such behaviours to be unaffected by attitudes. Membership of the Neutral group also predicts pro-environmental behaviours, although this relationship is weaker and exists for fewer measures of behaviour. Disengaged and Paradoxical forms of concern are not significant predictors of behaviour. Upon examining the effect of socio-economic status (SES) on group membership and this attitude-behaviour relationship, it was found that SES does not moderate the attitude-behaviour relationship, but it does influence group membership. Respondents with higher SES were more likely to belong to neutral or pro-environment groups. After reviewing these findings, it is concluded that environmental attitudes do clearly predict behaviour, but a large portion of the UK population do not possess environmental attitudes strong enough to do so (the Disengaged and Paradoxical groups amount to 36% of the population). Future studies should focus on these apathetic groups in an attempt to understand them, determine effective methods of engagement and identify factors that increase the probability of members transitioning out of these groups.

In order to achieve national and international climate goals and reduce the negative human impact on the climate, as well as to avoid increasing the temperature of the Earth, more environmentally friendly thinking about sustainability and environmental challenges is needed. Despite many environmental initiatives in society, it is important to emphasize and get an idea of the individual's attitudes and behaviors towards environmental sustainability to more easily influence individuals to act climate friendly. The purpose of this study is to get a picture of university students' attitudes and behaviors related to different environmentally relevant areas and activities that have a negative environmental impact, as well as underlying factors that are crucial to understand these behaviors. The study highlights previous research on behavior related to environment and students, comparatively between women and men, in relation to the media and socio-demographic and socio-economic factors. It is these factors that also are highlighted in this study and are related to the attitudes, thoughts and behaviors of the interviewed students regarding environmental sustainability. The study is based on hermeneutics as an interpretation method and with qualitative interviews as a method of collecting material. A total of eight people have been interviewed, including four women and four men. Relevant theories such as the theory of planned behavior, norm activation model and value belief norm theory derived from social psychology are used to analyze the empiricism. The study resulted in eight themes highlighting respondents' different attitudes and behaviors and thoughts about environmental sustainability. As previous research has shown, this study also confirms that attitudes and behaviors do not always coincide. The result shows that attitudes and behaviors are influenced in two different ways. Partly through a person’s childhood and social surrounding, but also through an impact of society from social media, trends and role models.

Although several sustainability implementation frameworks have been proposed, researchers have not yet proposed theories or models to help organisations speed up the rate of sustainability diffusion and narrow the gap between what is known and what is put into use. This study sought to fill this gap by proposing a sustainability diffusion model. The model was developed from an exhaustive review of the corresponding literature. It uses Rogers' (1962) diffusion of innovations theory and Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behaviour as a theoretical foundation. The model was tested and its structural architecture was validated in three different sustainability contexts; namely, duplex printing in UK universities; sustainable computing in service-based businesses; and sustainability culture in UK universities. The primary data was analysed statistically using SPSS, and structural equation modelling (SEM) in particular was used to validate the structural architecture of the proposed model. The SEM results indicate that the structural architecture of the theory of planned behaviour is well-founded. All the hypotheses that underline the theory's paths were supported. In contrast, the structural architecture of the diffusion of innovations theory was weakly supported. Some of the paths were rejected in at least two occasions. For example, the relationship between pro-sustainability knowledge and attitude was neither statistically significant nor directional. Moreover, several components of the 'verified' model turned out to be statistically insignificant or were rejected altogether. These were knowledge, perceived self interest, perceived persuader legitimacy, perceived consequences, perceived argument quality, trialability and perceived source credibility. Accordingly, once these constructs were removed and the model was restructured in accordance with the results of SEM analysis, an entirely new version of the 'sustainability diffusion model' emerged (See Figure IX-2). The architecture of the new model suggests that in order to speed up the rate of sustainability diffusion, change agents must emphasise the relative advantage, compatibility, subjective norm and the urgency of the pro-sustainability initiative under implementation and de-emphasise any complexities or risks associated with its operationalisation. Unexpectedly, the new version of the proposed model relies more on Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behaviour as a theoretical foundation than on Rogers' (1983) innovation-decision process model. In other words, the new model maintained almost all the features of the theory of planned behaviour, but it only absorbed some, but not all, of the components of Rogers' innovation-decision process model. Nevertheless, the new model maintained its holistic nature. It still takes into account both the person-specific and innovation-specific factors that influence the diffusion, adoption and actualisation of pro-sustainability behaviours/initiatives.

Many people care about the environment and are in favor of protecting it, but these concerns are imperfect determinants of behavior. There are good reasons for this “value-action gap”: incentives are frequently aligned against environmentally preferable action, and we each face so many daily environmentally relevant decisions that efforts to do the right thing consistently are daunting. These approaches can even backfire, as people dislike feeling judged, or may tire of constant efforts to behave and may backslide on good intentions. A more promising option for explaining or encouraging environmental behavior is invoking social norms. People modify their behavior to fit social expectations, so community decisions that work against environmental behavior can discourage beneficial behavior. Framing information in a way that demonstrates the environmentally beneficial choices of neighbors or group members increases willingness to make environmentally positive choices.

This chapter focuses on the well-documented misalignment between energy-related behaviors and the personal values of consumers, which has become a major source of angst among policymakers. Despite widespread pro-environmental or green attitudes, consumers frequently purchase non-green alternatives. The chapter identifies 50 theoretical approaches that can be divided almost equally into two types: those that emphasize beliefs, attitudes, and values; and those that also consider contextual factors and social norms. Three principles of intervention are recommended: provide credible and targeted information at points of decision; identify and address the key factors inhibiting and promoting the target behaviors in particular populations; and rigorously evaluate programs to provide credible estimates of impact and opportunities for improvement. The chapter recommends that research on the value-action gap be expanded beyond the traditional focus on individuals to include decision-making units such as households, boards of directors, commercial buying units, and government procurement groups.

AbstractEnvironmental attitudes have the potential to affect environmental behaviors, which in turn can affect action toward current and future global environmental targets. Recent large-scale surveys find that developing countries, which account for most of the growth in greenhouse gas emissions, have high levels of pro-environmental attitudes. Respondents from developing countries state that they perceive climate change as a major global threat, that climate change directly influences their voting decisions, and that they consider climate change as big a risk as COVID-19. Respondents from developing countries with lower per capita emissions, more educated respondents, and those who have been exposed to extreme weather events tend to have more pro-environmental attitudes. However, high levels of pro-environmental attitudes do not translate into high levels of environmental performance for developing countries, as measured by a comprehensive environmental performance index. Respondents report changes in individual actions to limit their effect on climate change but tend to focus on easier behavioral changes that have a relatively low environmental impact.

AbstractDegradation of natural resources exacerbates a country’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change. IPCC projections suggest that countries within the horn of Africa, which include Kenya, will suffer most from extreme climate change events, particularly more frequent and prolonged droughts. Women and children suffer disproportionately from the consequences of environmental degradation. Public participation is one of the strategies governments pursue to combat environmental degradation; however, there has been limited research to better understand students’ environmental attitudes and pro-environmental behavior to better inform student-led participatory designs. Students comprise a significant proportion of the population in Kenya. This research conducted in 2018 at Nginda Ward, Embu County, comprised a survey of 121 students: 58 high school and 63 primary school students. The research investigated students’ environmental knowledge, environmental attitudes, and pro-environmental behavior. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Multivariate statistics (MANOVA) were used to examine the relationship between the dependent variables and the participant’s gender and level of schooling. From the results obtained, the top five most frequently mentioned local environmental problems by the students sampled included water pollution, deforestation, air pollution, scarcity of safe sources for water for domestic use, and soil erosion. Inferential statistical results revealed that there is a significant relationship between students’ level of schooling and environmental attitudes, F = 11.79, (1, 120), p < 0.01. In addition, there is a significant relationship between students’ level of schooling and environmental knowledge, that is, perceived severity of environmental problems, F = 5.33, (1, 120), p < 0.05. Research findings further revealed a significant relationship between gender and environmental knowledge, F = 9.62, (1, 120), p < 0.01. However, gender differences in pro-environmental behavior were not statistically significant. Also, differences between primary and high school students’ pro-environmental behavior were insignificant.

The global environmental concerns that affect our planet require immediate action. In order to better understand the psychological dynamics underlying the adoption of pro-environmental behaviors, the research has directed increasing attention to the implicit (unconscious) psychological antecedents (attitudes) of sustainable behaviors, which have been adopted against climate change. The objective of this systematic review is to examine and to summarize the state-of-the-art in the field of the relationship between implicit attitudes towards climate change measured through the Implicit Association Test (IAT), and explicit attitudes, beliefs, and identity toward climate change. Based on PRISMA guidelines, a structured electronic literature search of Google Scholar, PsycInfo, PubMed, Science Direct, PsycArticles, Sociological Abstracts, and Academic Search Complete was conducted. Of the 943 abstracts screened, only 18 studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies testified independence between implicit and explicit attitudes towards climate change (absence of correlation). Despite this, implicit attitudes still predicted pro-environmental identity, while contradictory results appeared with beliefs. This highlights the urgency of promoting new research to understand on a deeper level dynamics involving implicit attitudes.

AbstractThis chapter provides an overview of the theoretical approaches to environmental attitudes and behaviors. It includes a discussion of different scales and surveys used in other programs with a focus on this topic. Scales measuring general environmental behavior, just like items in surveys, tend to focus on behavioral intentions and are correlated with environmentally friendly attitudes. In contrast, emission-related behavior depends more on context and socio-demographic characteristics and is rarely asked in surveys. Gaps frequently occur between environmental attitudes and general behaviors—the value-action gap—and between environmental behaviors and the actual ecological consequences of actions—the behavior-impact gap. Finally, previous results and problems encountered in the validation of self-reports on environmental behavior are highlighted.

Abstract This research examines the relationship between attitudes towards individual pro-environmental behavior and emotional intensity in response to eco-feedback designs for sustainable behavior change. This user-centered approach was performed in three phases. In the first phase, workshops were conducted with users who generated visual and written content in response to prompts on environmental attitudes. For the second phase, the research team created ten eco-feedback product sketches for electricity conservation, which were informed by qualitative analysis of 67 workshop participants’ content. Experimental sketches included positive and negative message framing, while control sketches provided generic baselines for comparison. Finally, for the third phase, 60 workshop participants were surveyed for emotional intensity in response to the eco-feedback sketches. Significant correlations were found between users’ attitudes and emotional intensity towards experimental designs compared to control designs. Users with positive attitudes towards individual conservation behaviors exhibited the strongest positive and negative emotions in response to designs with positive and negative message framing, respectively. While experiencing lesser degrees of emotional intensity, users with neutral or negative attitudes responded with statistically significant negative emotional intensity to experimental designs with negative message framing. These findings demonstrate that strategic message framing, tailored to users based on their pre-existing attitudes, can drive emotional responses and, consequently, motivation for sustainable behavior change across diverse attitude profiles.

The consequences of human actions on Earth are becoming increasingly evident, leading us to consider that the climate collapse has begun, as the General Secretary of the United Nations (UN) warned at the beginning of September 2023. At less than a decade from 2030, the goals and its targets for sustainable development (SD) in the UN 2030 Agenda are far from being achieved, requiring urgent actions. Their fulfilment is at risk, particularly considering recent events such as the war(s) and the pandemic. Developing individual and collective awareness for action is essential. To this end, it is necessary to develop pro-environmental knowledge and attitudes in all citizens, not just the scholar public, which can translate into behaviours favouring the environment and SD. Based on this framework, quantitative research was developed into the scope of communication workshops in a natural biological park in Portugal. This study aimed to evaluate visitors knowledge about SD and pro-environmental behaviours (PEB) after participating in two science communication workshops: Night of the Fireflies and Recreation of the Wool Cycle. In both workshops, the activities highlighted sustainable development themes in the scope of species extinction and biodiversity. A questionnaire was applied to 47 visitors (n=47) at the end of the activities. The results indicated that all visitors became familiar with SD, although they evaluated their knowledge as just sufficient. Participants also indicated that reducing waste and using plastic are PEBs that most contribute to SD. Finally, visitors considered that the PEB they would be willing to adopt due to their participation were the preservation of cultural and natural heritage and the non-disruption of fauna and flora during a visit to a park or natural area. Developing workshops enhanced citizens awareness and reflection on aspects of nature protection and SD.

The issues concerning environmental aspects of students' behavior are considered. The data on indicators of pro-environmental behavior of students of a regional university are obtained. Different types of attitudes toward environmental problems of modern times among girls and boys are revealed. The work shows the variability of awareness of environmental problems and students' involvement in pro-environmental initiatives. The authors conclude that it is necessary to create a system for the formation of sustainable pro-environmental behavior taking into account factors of the educational environment.

This study draws upon various and somewhat contradictory findings from previous research on the relationship between environmental views and actions. The key interest is to explore whether economic growth and protection of the environment are seen as compatible or conflicting goals, and how both relate to pro-environmental behaviour that people of Latvia engage in. The study is based on quantitative analysis of data from a nationwide representative survey of 1015 residents of Latvia conducted in November 2021. The results suggest that Latvians perceive economic development and environmental protection mostly as mutually dependent goals, and even those believing that the concern for the environment has gone too far at the expense of economic development still report practicing certain pro-environmental actions on a regular basis. Specifically, buying locally sourced and seasonal foods whenever possible, sorting different kinds of waste for recycling, and trying to reduce the consumption of disposable items like plastic bags are reported most often by the respondents. In the concluding part, the limitations of the present study as well as potential venues for future research are briefly discussed.

The study aims to contribute to characterizing the environmental literacy profile of students entering higher education in Portugal and to explore associations between sociodemographic variables and environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. A questionnaire survey was conducted with a stratified sample of 451 first-year undergraduate students from the University of the Algarve (southern Portugal). Results suggest that students demonstrated moderate environmental knowledge, positive attitudes toward the environment, and moderately positive pro-environmental behaviors. Evidence of relationships between students' environmental literacy profiles and sociodemographic aspects such as gender and scientific areas of study provides insights for future discussions and promotion of environmental education and culture in higher education institutions in Portugal. This will enable them to play an effective role in enhancing students' environmental literacy and citizenship.

In recent years, sustainable development policies have increasingly focused not only on economic indicators and infrastructure quality, but also on subjective well-being, happiness, and population satisfaction. The aim of this study is to determine how environmental concern, observed behavior, and skepticism levels impact life satisfaction assessments. The data comes from a survey of over 1,400 employed respondents in Russia, conducted by the authors in the summer of 2024. The methods include correlation and regression analyses, and environmental indicators were measured using simple scales that reflect respondents’ attitudes toward specific environmental issues. The results revealed that human and social capital indicators are important predictors of environmental concern, behavior, and skepticism. For instance, an active life stance increases environmental concern and pro-environmental actions, while a lack of trust in institutions raises the level of environmental skepticism. Overall, higher levels of environmental concern and increased pro-environmental actions enhance life satisfaction, whereas growing skepticism negatively affects subjective well-being. These findings could be used to inform environmental policy aimed at improving population well-being by engaging individuals in institutional efforts and building trust through the accumulation of social capital.

The impact of human factors on climate change is unequivocal. While consumers are increasingly becoming aware of their environmental footprint, this is not sufficient: contextual factors such as pricing, convenience, and packaging play a role in consumers’ decision-making. This has created a gap between consumers’ attitudes and behavior, which calls for intervention of behavioral sciences to change consumer behavior and consequently combat the climate crisis effectively. Consumer neuroscience methodology has been proposed as a potential tool to untangle the neural and psychological origins of consumers’ behavior since subjective reports may be biased by social desirability and therefore are not a reliable measure of pro-environmental behavior. Prior studies have shown that conditioning the consumer with information on the environmental impact of products can influence their buying behavior and brain activity. This paper provides an extended exploration of past works on consumer neuroscience, environmental behavior, and conditioning techniques. We aim to unite the current theories and common practices and uncover future research directions in an effort to develop a neuroscientifically supported conditioning intervention that could promote pro-environmental behavior in consumers.

Using microsurveys conducted in the People’s Republic of China over the past 2 decades, this paper explores the individual preferences among men and women toward sustainable consumption and production—the concept of doing more with less and decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation. The study finds that women exhibit greener living and working habits than men. However, women—regardless of education, rural–urban setting, or age—are impacted by time poverty, low political participation, limited awareness, gender norms, and, for younger and older women, financial limitations. To encourage and increase women’s capacity in shaping environmental solutions, economic and political gender gaps must be addressed and awareness on the impact of consumption needs to be strengthened.

The imperative to provide humanitarian and medical services on an urgent basis in armed conflicts is anchored in moral tenets, shared values, and international rules. States spend tens of billions of dollars each year to help implement humanitarian programs in conflicts across the world. Yet, in practice, counterterrorism objectives increasingly prevail over humanitarian concerns, often resulting in devastating effects for civilian populations in need of aid and protection in war. Not least, confusion and misapprehensions about the power and authority of States relative to the United Nations Security Council to set policy preferences and configure legal obligations contribute significantly to this trajectory. In this guide for States, we present a framework to reconfigure relations between these core commitments by assessing the counterterrorism architecture through the lens of impartial humanitarianism. We aim in particular to provide an evidence base and analytical frame for States to better grasp key legal and policy issues related to upholding respect for principled humanitarian action in connection with carrying out the Security Council’s counterterrorism decisions. We do so because the lack of knowledge regarding interpretation and implementation of counterterrorism resolutions matters for the coherence, integrity, and comprehensiveness of humanitarian policymaking and protection of the humanitarian imperative. In addition to analyzing foundational concerns and evaluating discernible behaviors and attitudes, we identify avenues that States may take to help achieve pro-humanitarian objectives. We also endeavor to help disseminate indications of, and catalyze, States’ legally relevant positions and practices on these issues. In section 1, we introduce the guide’s impetus, objectives, target audience, and structure. We also describe the methods that we relied on and articulate definitions for key terms. In section 2, we introduce key legal actors, sources of law, and the notion of international legal responsibility, as well as the relations between international and national law. Notably, Security Council resolutions require incorporation into national law in order to become effective and enforceable by internal administrative and judicial authorities. In section 3, we explain international legal rules relevant to advancing the humanitarian imperative and upholding respect for principled humanitarian action, and we sketch the corresponding roles of humanitarian policies, programs, and donor practices. International humanitarian law (IHL) seeks to ensure — for people who are not, or are no longer, actively participating in hostilities and whose needs are unmet — certain essential supplies, as well as medical care and attention for the wounded and sick. States have also developed and implemented a range of humanitarian policy frameworks to administer principled humanitarian action effectively. Further, States may rely on a number of channels to hold other international actors to account for safeguarding the humanitarian imperative. In section 4, we set out key theoretical and doctrinal elements related to accepting and carrying out the Security Council’s decisions. Decisions of the Security Council may contain (binding) obligations, (non-binding) recommendations, or a combination of the two. UN members are obliged to carry out the Council’s decisions. Member States retain considerable interpretive latitude to implement counterterrorism resolutions. With respect to advancing the humanitarian imperative, we argue that IHL should represent a legal floor for interpreting the Security Council’s decisions and recommendations. In section 5, we describe relevant conduct of the Security Council and States. Under the Resolution 1267 (1999), Resolution 1989 (2011), and Resolution 2253 (2015) line of resolutions, the Security Council has established targeted sanctions as counterterrorism measures. Under the Resolution 1373 (2001) line of resolutions, the Security Council has adopted quasi-“legislative” requirements for how States must counter terrorism in their national systems. Implementation of these sets of resolutions may adversely affect principled humanitarian action in several ways. Meanwhile, for its part, the Security Council has sought to restrict the margin of appreciation of States to determine how to implement these decisions. Yet international law does not demand that these resolutions be interpreted and implemented at the national level by elevating security rationales over policy preferences for principled humanitarian action. Indeed, not least where other fields of international law, such as IHL, may be implicated, States retain significant discretion to interpret and implement these counterterrorism decisions in a manner that advances the humanitarian imperative. States have espoused a range of views on the intersections between safeguarding principled humanitarian action and countering terrorism. Some voice robust support for such action in relation to counterterrorism contexts. A handful call for a “balancing” of the concerns. And some frame respect for the humanitarian imperative in terms of not contradicting counterterrorism objectives. In terms of measures, we identify five categories of potentially relevant national counterterrorism approaches: measures to prevent and suppress support to the people and entities involved in terrorist acts; actions to implement targeted sanctions; measures to prevent and suppress the financing of terrorism; measures to prohibit or restrict terrorism-related travel; and measures that criminalize or impede medical care. Further, through a number of “control dials” that we detect, States calibrate the functional relations between respect for principled humanitarian action and countering terrorism. The bulk of the identified counterterrorism measures and related “control dials” suggests that, to date, States have by and large not prioritized advancing respect for the humanitarian imperative at the national level. Finally, in section 6, we conclude by enumerating core questions that a State may answer to help formulate and instantiate its values, policy commitments, and legal positions to secure respect for principled humanitarian action in relation to counterterrorism contexts.
