The inconsistency between pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours called the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap, has been reported in many scenarios relating to sustainable actions. However, the reasons for it are not entirely clear. It has been proposed that the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap is driven by the moral dimension whereby moral attitudes fail to translate into subsequent moral behaviours. If so, the lacking integration of moral dimension into the environmental domain serves as a generalisable factor to improve the accuracy of predicting pro-environmental behaviours. Hence, we aimed to explore (i) whether the addition of a moral element to the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) shows the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap and (ii) whether the ethics position questionnaire (EPQ) is a more suitable measure of morality within the TPB framework, as compared to that of moral norms. The results from 181 US MTurk participants disclosed that the addition of the moral element to the TPB framework did not reveal the presence of the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap, despite both moral norms and idealism significantly predicting pro-environmental attitudes. The findings do not indicate whether moral norms or idealism should be used as a more accurate measure of morality within the TPB framework, although relativism was found to have no significant effects. Further investigation of why the moral element does not reveal the ’attitude-behaviour’ gap within the TPB framework predicting pro-environmental behaviours would help understand the reasons why rational choice models tend to overestimate theoretical vs. real-life engagement with sustainability.

Globally, the organic food market is the most successful green market. Young consumers, the decision-makers of the future, are perceived as being more environmentally concerned than older cohorts. The aim of this study was to consider young consumers’ attitudes and behaviours concerning organic food, where the organic food market in the UK is more mature than in Poland. Empirical research was conducted using a web-based survey questionnaire (CAWI) with consumers (n = 973) in both countries. The associations between four constructs (general pro-social attitudes, green consumption values, receptivity to green communication, and buying behaviour) were considered using CB-SEM. We extended the model with two new constructs to explain young consumers’ purchases of organic food. UK respondents are significantly more conscious green consumers with higher environmental attitude intensity than Polish residents. Intensity of pro-environmental attitude components influences directly and indirectly the choice of organic food. People with a higher intensity of pro-environmental attitudes are significantly more likely to choose organic food. Perception of organic food influences purchases only in Poland. The components of pro-environmental attitudes and perception of organic food alone do not explain the variability in behaviour, despite a good fit of the model. This suggests that other independent variables may be of influence.

The aim of this paper is to conduct a meta-analysis of 36 studies that analyse residents' intentions and pro-tourism behaviours as dependent variables in the light of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), focusing on the relationship between the constructs "attitude," "intention" and "behaviour." The results confirmed our three starting hypotheses, two supporting the postulates of the TRA and TPB and a third suggesting a strong effect size and direct correlation between attitudes and pro-tourism behaviours. In addition, the study site and source of research are significant moderators of the relationship between intention and behaviour and between attitude and behaviour, respectively, explaining part of the variability in effect sizes. Nonetheless, overall, the results of the moderation analysis suggest that much of the moderation is due to the heterogeneous operationalization of the analysed constructs.

This study explores the relationships between residents' attitudes in support of tourism, emotional solidarity with tourists and willingness to engage in pro-tourism behaviours. Residents' support for tourism hinges on their perceived benefits and costs, as influenced by theories such as the Social Exchange Theory and the Theory of Reasoned Action. Despite extensive research on residents' attitudes and tourism support, pro-tourism behaviours remain underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how residents' attitudes and emotional solidarity, including newly added indicators of interpersonal connection, impact their intentions for pro-tourism behaviours. Empirical data from a sample of 4,026 residents in the Algarve region, Portugal, were analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results of this study not only offer theoretical insights but also have practical implications for destination management. These findings underscore the importance of implementing internal marketing strategies that foster a welcoming and empathetic attitude among residents towards tourists. The study's results become directly relevant and beneficial to tourism by fostering a sense of connection and appreciation for tourists among residents.

Abstract The main aim of this study was to examine whether the economic status (current and in childhood) determined pro-ecological attitudes and behaviour. The survey involved 207 adults with different economic status. Both economic status in childhood and the present were taken into consideration. Analysis of the results indicated that people raised in families with low and medium material status have not only more eco-friendly attitudes but also have a greater tendency towards various ‘green’ behaviours. The differences among people with different current material status concerning their eco-friendly attitudes and behaviours are not so obvious. The most wealthy seem to have a less pro-ecological attitude, but on the other hand they are ready to put more money towards ecologically-friendly household expenses.

Abstract The use of reclaimed and recycled building materials is considered a pro-environmental behaviour and studying the factors that influence this is a first step towards establishing such behaviour. It is therefore essential to understand how pro-environmental behaviours develop. This article investigates the relationships between the influential factors on behaviours that help reduce waste in the construction industry, focussing on New Zealand architects. The study utilizes an online questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), which is made up of attitude, subjective norm, intention, and perceived behavioural control. The study reveals that the attitudes, intentions and perceived behavioural control of architects are strong predictors of pro-environmental behaviour while the subjective norm is a weak predictor. Knowledge of architects about regulations and certificates related to recycled materials will influence the pro-environmental practices. One of the obstacles in this way is the attitude of people and architects can play an important role in changing it. These findings show that architects need to be informed about related regulations and educated about different ways of integrating these materials.

The aim of this paper is to identification young consumers’ attitude to sustainable consumption and present their pro-environmental and pro-social behaviours and their motives. This discussion is complemented with the results of own pilot study regarding young people’s involvement in pro-eco and pro-social projects. The sample included 88 people - first-year students of full-time engineering studies. The analysis of gathered data allowed to formulate some conclusions. It showed that high awareness of growing environmental and social problems and threats they pose is a significant phenomenon in the area of young consumers’ choices. This awareness is accompanied by confidence that individual actions and attitudes can lead to restoration of the natural environment. These factors are becoming a crucial motive for young adults to undertake socially and environmentally responsible actions. However, sometimes there is a discrepancy between their pro-eco declarations and actual behaviours of sustainable consumption. This is mainly due to financial factors, which in many situations seem to be predominant

Purpose – This paper aims to present the findings of a survey into attitudes towards the environment and the pro-environmental behaviours of young adults in Vietnam. Design/Methodology/Approach – An online survey was administered to university students in Vietnam’s two most populous cities, Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City (N = 391). Findings – The results suggest that environmental considerations are not taken into account in young Vietnamese adults’ purchase intentions. This is more evident in expressive purchases, but also, to some degree, in utilitarian purchases. Practical implications – For the marketers of environmentally friendly products, this represents at least two key challenges: first, to try to shift the attitudes of young adult consumers towards thinking of environmental friendliness as an attractive characteristic and status-filled activity for potential expressive purchases. Second, making environmentally friendly alternatives of expressive goods more visible and more widely available in Vietnam. Social implications – Non-government organisations and governments seeking to protect the environment need to consider this unique dynamic in social marketing campaigns to increase the desirability of pro-environmental product choices and other pro-environmental behaviours. Originality/value – This paper examines pro-environmental behaviours and intentions of young adults in Vietnam for the first time. The paper establishes that self-expression is more important than the environment, and it is also evident that these young consumers are still vulnerable to perceived social pressure when it comes to expressing themselves.

Great scientific effort has been devoted to understanding what drives pro-environmental behaviour, yet the question of the environmental attitude–behaviour gap remains unanswered. Studies have indicated that self-regulation and executive functions may reduce such a gap by increasing individuals’ ability to maintain attention on present actions and to resist goal-conflicting temptations. Given the inherent association of self-regulation and executive functions with dispositional mindfulness, we carried out a cross-sectional study to test the hypothesis of the role of dispositional mindfulness in explaining the phenomenon. Our results showed that higher levels of dispositional mindfulness, measured via the Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), are related to a higher tendency to perform pro-environmental behaviour, and that the observing facet of the construct would predict higher pro-environmental behaviour scores. Interestingly, we also found the acting with awareness and nonjudging factors to be moderators of the relationship between pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours, suggesting that enhanced awareness of the present moment may favour higher congruence between attitudes and behaviours, and that higher acceptance may favour more adaptive coping strategies to the climate challenge. Our findings provide a novel contribution to the understanding of the relationship between mindfulness and pro-environmental behaviour and support the perspective that self-regulation skills would contribute to reducing the environmental attitude–behaviour gap.

The purpose of this study is to examine the potential for yoga to contribute to sustainability objectives via pro-social and environmental attitudes and behaviours. It locates core principles and concepts embedded within the meaning of the term interconnectedness in both western and eastern histories of ideas, with particular emphasis on yoga, integralism, and ecological theory. It evaluates and investigates yoga's potential toward recognition or realisation of a non-dualist paradigm of interconnectedness that might invoke social and environmental change. It explores how a tripartite model of yoga understands interconnectedness at a deeper level than the mechanistic worldview, and could support proactive measures toward a more fair, just, and sustainable world. It locates cultural barriers to yoga's potential for a pro-environmental and pro-social worldview and lifestyle, suggesting options to advance yoga's ecological values by improved education and scholarship. To access suitable models, the study learnt and practiced traditional teachings, applied them to contemporary issues and sought perspectives from under-represented sources. To answer research questions on how yoga can benefit contemporary issues, it also critically reflected on how scholarship impacts upon the communities from which the knowledge is obtained. The project contributes new knowledge on interconnectedness, its meaning and historic cultural context. It contributes a novel epistemic and methodological framework consistent with traditional knowledge, particularly relevant for progress on culturally appropriate scholarship in yoga studies. The project is the first of its kind to deeply explore the meanings of the word interconnectedness. It is one of the most committed attempts to date to seek out a doctrinal model from the traditions that can embrace both transcendent and immanent aspects of yoga in both theory and practice toward a coherent eco-yoga model. In doing so it engages with a wide lacuna between rhetorical appeals to yoga as a sustainability praxis and mind body intervention by supplementing existing theory with some of the traditional knowledge to explain how yoga works, and how it can help to meet sustainability objectives like cultivating an interconnected worldview. The project calls to seriously examine the legacy of colonial classification systems and methodological issues in the representation of yoga cultures. It appeals for the review of academic conventions among yoga scholars and for the prioritisation of sincere regard for the impact of scholarship on yoga’s intangible cultural heritage value, particularly considering yoga’s protection under UNESCO.

Sun protective attitudes and intentions were investigated in 2 experiments and 1 field study. Participants in the first experiment were female Caucasian university students between the ages of 17 and 35 years (N = 102). A 2 x 2 experimental design manipulated message frame and the normative context and measured the level of identification with the ingroup (university students) to examine intentions to engage in sun protective behaviour within the next fortnight and within the next month. To manipulate levels of ingroup normative support, participants studied bar graphs and testimonial statements showing ostensible information on the percentage of recreational sportswomen engaging in sun-protective behaviours in comparison to non-sporting women. To manipulate the message frame, messages were presented in either a gain or loss frame format. Regression analyses revealed significant effects for prior attitudes towards engaging in sun-protective behaviour in the next fortnight and also in the next month. Contrary to expectations, no interactive effects involving norms were found in the prediction of intentions. The lack of significant results were attributed to the unsuitability of the sample population (university students) in relation to sun-protective behaviours. To test third person perceptions, two measures of perceptions of influence were assessed. The first measure assessed perceptions of how much the target groups would be affected by the sun-protective advertisement and the second assessed perceptions of how much target groups would engage in regular sun-protective behaviour after reading the sun-protective advertisement. Results of the repeated measures mixed ANOVAS revealed reversed third person perceptions between self and other when participants were exposed to a supportive ingroup norms and a Sun-protective attitudes and behaviours vi classic third person effect when participants were exposed to a non-supportive ingroup norm. Similar patterns of results were found for perceptions between ingroup and outgroup members. It was concluded from study one that the manipulations due to ingroup norms may not have been effective for a sample of participants whose personal relevance for sun-protective behaviour was not strong. In study 2, sun protective attitudes, intentions and behaviour at a 2-week follow-up were investigated in an experimental study using a population more likely to engage in decision-making in relation to the target behaviour; Caucasian sportswomen between the ages of 17 and 35 years (N = 101). The 2 x 2 experimental design manipulated the normative context and image norms and measured the level of identification with ingroup (young recreational sportswomen). Ingroup norms were manipulated in a similar manner to study 1. Image norms were manipulated through the inclusion of a colour photograph featuring a sportswoman whose skin tone had been manipulated via a computer imaging program (Photoshop 6.0) to appear either pale or tanned. Regression analyses revealed a significant 2-way interaction for ingroup norm x identification on intentions. When decomposed, the interaction showed that participants who identified strongly with their ingroup had stronger intentions to engage in sun-protective behaviour in the next fortnight when exposed to a supportive ingroup norm. The findings lend support to the impact of social influence on intentions to engage in sun-protective behaviours. A trend was also revealed for the 2-way interaction for group norms x image norms on attitudes towards engaging in sun-protective behaviour in the next fortnight. The trend suggested that participants exposed to a pale image norm had more positive attitudes towards engaging in sun-protective behaviour when exposed to a supportive group norm in comparison to those exposed to a non-supportive group norm. Sun-protective attitudes and behaviours vii Thus, study 2 provided support for the interactive effects of ingroup norms and identification on intentions to engage in sun-protective behaviours suggesting that group norms, conceptualised from a SIT/SCT perspective, may be important in the sun-protective decision-making process. Study 2 also provided some support for the interactive effects of ingroup norm and image norms on attitudes towards engaging in sun-protective behaviours, highlighting the importance of investigating the effects of social influence factors in young sportswomen's sun-protective decision making processes. In study 3, participants were Caucasian women between the ages of 17 and 35 years (N = 123) who were visitors to beaches on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. A model based on the theory of planned behaviour (Ajzen, 1991) was developed incorporating additional normative factors (i.e., image norms, group norms and personal norms). The revised TPB model was then compared to two models previously tested in the context of health behaviours. The first comparative model was based on Jackson and Aiken's (2000) psychosocial model of sunprotection and, the second model was based on Gibbons, Gerrard, Blanton and Russell's (1998) prototype/willingness model. The models were examined using the EQS structural equation modelling program which revealed that the TPB-based model provided the most parsimonious fit to the data. The results support the inclusion of different sources of social influence (i.e., group norms and personal norms) in a TPB-based predictive model for sun-protective intentions and behaviours. Results revealed it is important to consider the impact of group norms, from a SIT/SCT perspective, on young women's sun-protective decision-making processes. Results also showed that it is important to consider the impact of young women's personal norms (i.e., internal moral rules and expectations about their own Sun-protective attitudes and behaviours viii behaviour) in the sun-protective decision-making process. Overall, the findings of the program of research suggested that it was specific referent norms that were important in the sun-protective decision-making process rather than more broad and general societal norms. Overall, the program of studies established the important role of social influence factors in young women's sun-protective decision making processes. The program of studies highlighted important theoretical and practical contributions that can aid in the development and implementation of more effective sun-protection messages to motivate young women to engage in sun-protective behaviours. The current program of research adds to the field of research by providing a comparison of the impact of various sources of social influence on attitudes and intentions to engage in sun-protective behaviour. The current research also empirically elucidates the core dimensions, mechanisms and relationships underlying the formation of sunprotective attitudes, intentions and behaviours.

The effect of social status on visitors' behaviour at one type of tourist event, a world's fair, is examined. A model is developed which shows that: 1. Socialisation experiences can influence individuals positions in the social status hierarchy; 2. People who have had similar socialisation experiences may exhibit similar behaviours; 3. A basis of social status is the prestige awarded to an individual by society; 4. Tourism is associated with prestige; 5. Tourism experiences can affect an individual's position in the social status hierarchy; 6. World's fairs can be a destination oe event where the experiences or 'ritual transformations' can occur. These ideas that visitor's behaviour at a tourist destination may differ depending on his/her level of social status. To test this thesis, hypotheses based on five constructs are developed and tested using data collected at Expo '86 in Vancouver, Canada. The five constucts that are expected to vary with level of 7. Attending cultural events; social status are: 1. Mode of travel to Expo '86; 2. Trip planning; 3. Expectations of Expo'86; and 4. Souvenir collecting. Although the results are in general inconclusive, the viability of the hypotheses cannot be dismissed because of some limitation in the data; they were collected for reasons other than this research and the research instrument used was not meant to measure the constructs specified here. As well there is strong evidence in the research literature to support the main argument. A model of social status and behaviour, adapted in this thesis to tourism behaviour, can be used in future investigations. Areas for further investigations are suggested including areas of the model that should be expanded and clarified and new methods to test the constructs.

Although several sustainability implementation frameworks have been proposed, researchers have not yet proposed theories or models to help organisations speed up the rate of sustainability diffusion and narrow the gap between what is known and what is put into use. This study sought to fill this gap by proposing a sustainability diffusion model. The model was developed from an exhaustive review of the corresponding literature. It uses Rogers' (1962) diffusion of innovations theory and Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behaviour as a theoretical foundation. The model was tested and its structural architecture was validated in three different sustainability contexts; namely, duplex printing in UK universities; sustainable computing in service-based businesses; and sustainability culture in UK universities. The primary data was analysed statistically using SPSS, and structural equation modelling (SEM) in particular was used to validate the structural architecture of the proposed model. The SEM results indicate that the structural architecture of the theory of planned behaviour is well-founded. All the hypotheses that underline the theory's paths were supported. In contrast, the structural architecture of the diffusion of innovations theory was weakly supported. Some of the paths were rejected in at least two occasions. For example, the relationship between pro-sustainability knowledge and attitude was neither statistically significant nor directional. Moreover, several components of the 'verified' model turned out to be statistically insignificant or were rejected altogether. These were knowledge, perceived self interest, perceived persuader legitimacy, perceived consequences, perceived argument quality, trialability and perceived source credibility. Accordingly, once these constructs were removed and the model was restructured in accordance with the results of SEM analysis, an entirely new version of the 'sustainability diffusion model' emerged (See Figure IX-2). The architecture of the new model suggests that in order to speed up the rate of sustainability diffusion, change agents must emphasise the relative advantage, compatibility, subjective norm and the urgency of the pro-sustainability initiative under implementation and de-emphasise any complexities or risks associated with its operationalisation. Unexpectedly, the new version of the proposed model relies more on Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behaviour as a theoretical foundation than on Rogers' (1983) innovation-decision process model. In other words, the new model maintained almost all the features of the theory of planned behaviour, but it only absorbed some, but not all, of the components of Rogers' innovation-decision process model. Nevertheless, the new model maintained its holistic nature. It still takes into account both the person-specific and innovation-specific factors that influence the diffusion, adoption and actualisation of pro-sustainability behaviours/initiatives.

In order to achieve national and international climate goals and reduce the negative human impact on the climate, as well as to avoid increasing the temperature of the Earth, more environmentally friendly thinking about sustainability and environmental challenges is needed. Despite many environmental initiatives in society, it is important to emphasize and get an idea of the individual's attitudes and behaviors towards environmental sustainability to more easily influence individuals to act climate friendly. The purpose of this study is to get a picture of university students' attitudes and behaviors related to different environmentally relevant areas and activities that have a negative environmental impact, as well as underlying factors that are crucial to understand these behaviors. The study highlights previous research on behavior related to environment and students, comparatively between women and men, in relation to the media and socio-demographic and socio-economic factors. It is these factors that also are highlighted in this study and are related to the attitudes, thoughts and behaviors of the interviewed students regarding environmental sustainability. The study is based on hermeneutics as an interpretation method and with qualitative interviews as a method of collecting material. A total of eight people have been interviewed, including four women and four men. Relevant theories such as the theory of planned behavior, norm activation model and value belief norm theory derived from social psychology are used to analyze the empiricism. The study resulted in eight themes highlighting respondents' different attitudes and behaviors and thoughts about environmental sustainability. As previous research has shown, this study also confirms that attitudes and behaviors do not always coincide. The result shows that attitudes and behaviors are influenced in two different ways. Partly through a person’s childhood and social surrounding, but also through an impact of society from social media, trends and role models.

This thesis attempts to bridge the gap between Social Psychology and Sociolinguistics by exploring the relationship between language attitudes and language use. Using a sample of 71 university students in Spain, it investigates how learners deal with phonological variation in the English language, what language attitudes are held towards American and British models of English speech and which social and psychological factors are linked with learners' language attitudes and language use. A social-psychological model was adopted and adapted, allowing learners' use of intervocalic /t/ to be successfully predicted from measures of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control. Direct measures of learners' preferred accent and pronunciation class were also highly predictive of learners' language use. Several trends were found in the attitudinal data. Firstly, British English speech was rated more favourably overall, though American English speech was often viewed as more socially attractive. Secondly, the evaluative dimensions of competence and social attractiveness were salient amongst learners in the Spanish context. Each of these findings endorses those of previous language attitude studies conducted elsewhere. Thirdly, female speakers were consistently rated more favourably than male speakers; thus, highlighting the need for further investigation into the variable of speaker sex. Familiarity with the speech varieties under investigation – most often gained through education, media exposure, time spent abroad and/or contact with native speakers – seemed to result in learners challenging rigid stereotypes and expressing more individualised attitudes. Overall, British speech emerged as formal and functional, while American speech was thought to fulfil more informal and interpersonal functions. This thesis provides compelling evidence of attitude-behaviour relations, adds to the growing volume of language attitude research being conducted across the globe, and establishes – for the first time – which social and psychological variables are relevant and salient within English-language learning contexts in Spain.

While managers increasingly see the importance of corporate social responsibility, incorporating it in the business often fails (Keys et al., 2009). Organizational sustainability performance can improve if employees have positive attitudes towards sustainability (Wang et al., 2011). This thesis aims to explore how different leadership behaviours in case company Cybercom have influenced the attitudes of its employees. New analytical tools are developed for analysing the data collected through interviews with employees at Cybercom. The findings indicate several connections between the leadership behaviours studied, and the attitudinal components. One main finding was that all four leadership behaviours in Cybercom had, to a certain extent, led to the affective outcome of feeling that sustainability was more important, the cognitive outcome of learning about the business perspective of sustainability, and the behavioural outcome of communicating more or differently about sustainability. It is concluded that Cybercom has helped shape its employees’ attitudes through various factors such as employee training, leaders acting as role models and motivators, written materials and workshops. The theoretical contributions of this paper consist of new knowledge in the field of leadership shaping employee attitudes, as well as new analytical tools. The practical contributions of this paper are managerial implications for Cybercom.

AbstractLoneliness and social and civic behaviours are intertwined in complex ways, and only a limited number of studies have explored these relationships. This chapter explains why loneliness and social isolation not only have implications for the health of the individuals affected (which is the focus of Chap. 4) but also can be seen as a threat to the well-being of our societies and to the vitality of our democracies. The chapter illustrates that loneliness and isolation are not just conceptually distinct but are associated with divergent outcomes. We find that behavioural preferences reported by lonely individuals differ widely from those reported by socially isolated individuals for many societal contexts, highlighting that being alone is different from being lonely. Loneliness and social isolation are both correlated with low interpersonal trust and reduced political efficacy (the extent to which a person thinks their voice counts in politics). However, lonely individuals tend to be more inclined to engage in risk-taking behaviours, potentially impacting community safety. Moreover, in contrast to socially isolated individuals, lonely individuals exhibit a greater willingness to donate to good causes and volunteer for charities and non-profit organisations. They also show a more long-term orientation, saying that they prioritise long-term benefits over short-term gains.

AbstractThe welfare state is an integral part of western industrialised democracies. While its most obvious function is to provide a safety net for individuals, who are threatened by social risks, it also has far-reaching effects on a multitude of social phenomena, such as the formation of attitudes and behaviours. This introductory chapter illustrates why the welfare state serves as a popular independent variable and sets out the main problems associated with its operationalisation, leading to the research questions of this book.

AbstractThis chapter explores young people’s awareness and perceptions of period poverty, menstrual health conditions, sustainability, and the experiences of transgender people who menstruate. It also considers the extent to which their awareness of these four themes has led to a change in their attitudes and offline behaviours. This chapter argues that, thanks to social media in particular, young people in Great Britain are becoming increasingly aware of issues around menstrual equity. Nevertheless, they have limited knowledge about menstrual health such as being able to identify if symptoms are typical or atypical. Ultimately, as my findings demonstrate, the changes that will have the greatest impact on young people are improved access to high quality menstrual education (which includes tactile engagement with menstrual products and discussions of lived experiences), opportunities to develop their media literacy skills, and the fostering of an inclusive and open culture around menstruation in educational settings. The menstrual movement must therefore continue to work with the government to improve menstrual education in schools and, where possible, support teachers and pupils.

AbstractAs the COVID-19 pandemic confined millions across the globe to their homes, technology proved an indispensable tool that allowed humanity to sustain many aspects of everyday life, including social behaviours. In compliance with quarantine restrictions, communities were unable to support each other in the usual manner; simultaneously, the demand for such support grew, owing to the difficult circumstances. This study (N = 196) explores whether technology enabled or hindered this specific type of social interaction – helping others. We discovered that General Online Social Interaction Propensity correlated positively with helping – although it demonstrated stronger correlations with online support. The Technology Adoption Propensity Index Optimism and Proficiency subscales failed to correlate significantly with helping and only Vulnerability subscale showed significant correlation. In conclusion, both GOSIP and TAP Vulnerability are valid predictors of proneness to offer help online. We suggest considering various personality predispositions may help to maximize the effectiveness of online helping.

AbstractComputational social science has had a profound impact on the study of health and disease, mainly by providing new data sources for all of the primary Ws—what, who, when, and where—in order to understand the final “why” of disease. Anonymized digital trace data bring a new level of detail to contact networks, search engine and social media logs allow for the now-casting of symptoms and behaviours, and media sharing informs the formation of attitudes pivotal in health decision-making. Advances in computational methods in network analysis, agent-based modelling, as well as natural language processing, data mining, and time series analysis allow both the extraction of fine-grained insights and the construction of abstractions over the new data sources. Meanwhile, numerous challenges around bias, privacy, and ethics are being negotiated between data providers, academia, the public, and policymakers in order to ensure the legitimacy of the resulting insights and their responsible incorporation into the public health decision-making. This chapter outlines the latest research on the application of computational social science to epidemiology and the data sources and computational methods involved and spotlights ongoing efforts to address the challenges in its integration into policymaking.

{With the growing popularity of sustainable products and the expected increase in organic farming and supply of organic food products as part of the goals of The European Green Deal, it’s important to evaluate the popularity and demand for such products in Bulgaria. Understanding the consumer perspective on the affordability of organic products is important, as it directly influences purchasing intentions and can help predict the growth of the organic market. This study investigates consumer attitudes and perceptions regarding the pricing of organic products in the Bulgarian market via statistical analysis of a survey conducted on a targeted sample of Bulgarian consumers of various demographic backgrounds. The survey is divided into three distinct sections. The first section focuses on gathering demographic data from the participants. The second section delves into their present purchasing habits regarding organic products. Finally, the third section investigates participants’ attitudes regarding the consumption and pricing of organic products. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence and insights into the attitudes of Bulgarian consumers toward price changes in the organic product market, which can contribute to the broader understanding of consumer behaviour and the future development of the sustainable food market in Bulgaria. The study's findings hold significant practical implications for stakeholders within the organic food industry, including organic producers, retailers, policymakers, and others. Gaining insights into customers' perspectives can prove useful in addressing challenges associated with pricing and affordability in the organic food market.}

This study draws upon various and somewhat contradictory findings from previous research on the relationship between environmental views and actions. The key interest is to explore whether economic growth and protection of the environment are seen as compatible or conflicting goals, and how both relate to pro-environmental behaviour that people of Latvia engage in. The study is based on quantitative analysis of data from a nationwide representative survey of 1015 residents of Latvia conducted in November 2021. The results suggest that Latvians perceive economic development and environmental protection mostly as mutually dependent goals, and even those believing that the concern for the environment has gone too far at the expense of economic development still report practicing certain pro-environmental actions on a regular basis. Specifically, buying locally sourced and seasonal foods whenever possible, sorting different kinds of waste for recycling, and trying to reduce the consumption of disposable items like plastic bags are reported most often by the respondents. In the concluding part, the limitations of the present study as well as potential venues for future research are briefly discussed.

The consequences of human actions on Earth are becoming increasingly evident, leading us to consider that the climate collapse has begun, as the General Secretary of the United Nations (UN) warned at the beginning of September 2023. At less than a decade from 2030, the goals and its targets for sustainable development (SD) in the UN 2030 Agenda are far from being achieved, requiring urgent actions. Their fulfilment is at risk, particularly considering recent events such as the war(s) and the pandemic. Developing individual and collective awareness for action is essential. To this end, it is necessary to develop pro-environmental knowledge and attitudes in all citizens, not just the scholar public, which can translate into behaviours favouring the environment and SD. Based on this framework, quantitative research was developed into the scope of communication workshops in a natural biological park in Portugal. This study aimed to evaluate visitors knowledge about SD and pro-environmental behaviours (PEB) after participating in two science communication workshops: Night of the Fireflies and Recreation of the Wool Cycle. In both workshops, the activities highlighted sustainable development themes in the scope of species extinction and biodiversity. A questionnaire was applied to 47 visitors (n=47) at the end of the activities. The results indicated that all visitors became familiar with SD, although they evaluated their knowledge as just sufficient. Participants also indicated that reducing waste and using plastic are PEBs that most contribute to SD. Finally, visitors considered that the PEB they would be willing to adopt due to their participation were the preservation of cultural and natural heritage and the non-disruption of fauna and flora during a visit to a park or natural area. Developing workshops enhanced citizens awareness and reflection on aspects of nature protection and SD.

In recent years, sustainable development policies have increasingly focused not only on economic indicators and infrastructure quality, but also on subjective well-being, happiness, and population satisfaction. The aim of this study is to determine how environmental concern, observed behavior, and skepticism levels impact life satisfaction assessments. The data comes from a survey of over 1,400 employed respondents in Russia, conducted by the authors in the summer of 2024. The methods include correlation and regression analyses, and environmental indicators were measured using simple scales that reflect respondents’ attitudes toward specific environmental issues. The results revealed that human and social capital indicators are important predictors of environmental concern, behavior, and skepticism. For instance, an active life stance increases environmental concern and pro-environmental actions, while a lack of trust in institutions raises the level of environmental skepticism. Overall, higher levels of environmental concern and increased pro-environmental actions enhance life satisfaction, whereas growing skepticism negatively affects subjective well-being. These findings could be used to inform environmental policy aimed at improving population well-being by engaging individuals in institutional efforts and building trust through the accumulation of social capital.

The impact of human factors on climate change is unequivocal. While consumers are increasingly becoming aware of their environmental footprint, this is not sufficient: contextual factors such as pricing, convenience, and packaging play a role in consumers’ decision-making. This has created a gap between consumers’ attitudes and behavior, which calls for intervention of behavioral sciences to change consumer behavior and consequently combat the climate crisis effectively. Consumer neuroscience methodology has been proposed as a potential tool to untangle the neural and psychological origins of consumers’ behavior since subjective reports may be biased by social desirability and therefore are not a reliable measure of pro-environmental behavior. Prior studies have shown that conditioning the consumer with information on the environmental impact of products can influence their buying behavior and brain activity. This paper provides an extended exploration of past works on consumer neuroscience, environmental behavior, and conditioning techniques. We aim to unite the current theories and common practices and uncover future research directions in an effort to develop a neuroscientifically supported conditioning intervention that could promote pro-environmental behavior in consumers.

This study was conducted as part of the efforts of the Council's FGM Data Hub to address measurement challenges encountered by programme implementers in measuring change and the effect of social desirability in the context of FGM. The study involved piloting a simple opinion poll survey using a combination of direct (self-report) and indirect (vignettes) questioning methodologies to generate robust data to measure public views on FGM. While opinion polls have been widely used in market research and to measure public views on other stigmatised or illegal behaviours such as abortion, they have rarely been used in the FGM context. Several studies have used vignettes to explore FGM, but the combination of vignettes with a quantitative approach is less common. The study aimed to improve the measurement of social attitudes/opinions toward FGM using this novel method. Findings suggest that indirect questioning methods allowed respondents to be more objective in their responses compared to direct questioning methods, thus leading to more robust data.

[Extract] These findings provide an overview of changes in young Queenslanders’ attitudes, behaviours, and life pathways during the early spread of COVID-19 and public health restrictions to contain it. Evidently, this period of sudden, mass social and economic disruption posed heightened risks to the social, economic, and psychological well-being of the Our Lives cohort and those young adults they represent. The introduction of emergency welfare measures may have been a short-term buffer to some of these impacts, as were the opportunities found by more fortunate young people to strengthen existing relationships, and cultivate an inward focus on personal goals, interests, and health. Nonetheless, our research suggests both the risks and opportunities posed by COVID-19 are being experienced unevenly within the cohort, with the potential for a widening of social inequalities. Encouragingly, there were signs that political bipartisanship on the issue of COVID-19 has helped to reverse a long-term decline in young people’s trust in government and politicians generally. Further research on the Our Lives cohort will thus be critical for understanding the longer-term implications of COVID-19 for the lives and outlooks of young Queenslanders into 2021 and beyond.

Around the world, governments in liberal democracies are increasingly worried by the decline of public trust. The question that is often asked is why individuals and communities have declining trust in government institutions. However, the reverse question – whether governments trust communities, and if not, why not – is far less frequently explored. A relationship of trust involves one party trusting another, and that trust being returned. One key quality of trust is therefore reciprocity. For a successful trust relationship to be created and maintained it must be reciprocal. Trust must flow both ways – not just from communities to government but from government to communities. This Report examines trust relationships between government and communities that play a role in developing resilience to social harms. The particular focus is on the areas of disaster recovery, emergency response and dealing with violent extremism, and the ways in which government officials implement related programs and policies. The aim of the project is to support government officials and community leaders and members in creating and sustaining the trusting relationships that are needed to deliver these types of resilience building programs. The Report is based on a series of in-depth interviews with government and community workers, a series of community roundtables, as well as an extensive literature review. This evidence shows the importance of reciprocal personal relationships in building trust. For trust to grow, these relationships need to be tended and carefully maintained. Key to the creation and maintenance of trust are behaviours and attitudes such as openness, reliability, accountability, respect and confidentiality. The Report includes Principles, Guidelines and a Trust Checklist focussed on trust-building behaviours. The following are important for the ways in which trust is built and strengthened: Building and maintaining relationships Expanding familiarity and awareness Increasing cultural awareness and competence Establishing communication strategies Developing methods for constructive collaboration Distributing trust equally across society Both government officials and communities developing ways to build trust Increasing trust building activities

This paper examines new data on public sector employees from 18 Latin American countries to shed light on the role of trust in the performance of government agencies. We developed an original survey taken during the first COVID-19 wave that includes randomized experiments with pandemic-related treatments. We document that individual-level trust in coworkers, other public employees, and citizens is positively related to performance-enhancing behaviors, such as cooperation and information-sharing, and policy attitudes, such as openness to technological innovations in public service delivery. Trust is more strongly linked to positive behaviors and attitudes in non-merit-based civil service systems. High-trust and low-trust respondents report different assessments of their main work constraints. Also, they draw different inferences and prefer different policy responses when exposed to data-based framing treatments about social distancing outcomes in their countries. Low-trust public employees are more likely to assign responsibility for a negative outcome to the government and to prefer stricter enforcement of social distancing.

Restrictive masculinity is a social construct that is tied to beliefs about how men behave and are expected to behave to be considered “real men”. By contrast, gender-equitable masculinities constitute a more flexible alternative that permits men to take on diverse roles and behaviors while not limiting womens agency. This publication conducted a thorough analysis of restrictive masculinities in Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago in 2022, utilizing both focus groups and online surveys. The research aimed to understand the attitudes of young men exploring seven themes related to gender and masculinities, including toughness, self-sufficiency, paid and unpaid work, money and education, hypersexuality, homophobia, power and control, and violence. To measure masculinity, the study develops a statistically validated scale composed of diverse attitude statements based on previous tools on this topic. It also explores how young mens attitudes about gender are associated with social norms and influence behavioral outcomes in areas such as sexual harassment, bullying, alcohol and drug abuse, depression and suicidal ideation. Finally, the publication offers policy recommendations and highlights best practices that can be employed to accelerate positive changes in the region.

The limited participation of Iraqi women in community decision-making in Kirkuk and Diyala is the result of various intertwined factors. This study explores emerging opportunities for social transformation in the context of sedimented layers of male privilege and the questioning of restrictive gender norms in the two governorates. With this report, Oxfam and its partners aim to dismantle barriers to women’s active participation, which is currently constrained by stereotypes and restrictive ideas about gender. Among the promising pathways for change are awareness-raising activities with male allies, alongside other longer-term efforts advancing transformative change in attitudes, practices, and behaviors.

This case study documents the experiences of Population and Development Initiative (PDI) and Civil Society Organisation partners working to improve sanitation and hygiene within fishing communities in Ukerewe District, Mwanza Region, Tanzania. Addressing entrenched attitudes and social beliefs, behaviour change campaigns were designed to overcome traditional beliefs around sanitation and fishing, with adaptations made for remote island communities. The case study explains how they worked with fishing unions and communities to increase participation and collaboration in sanitation activities, and advocated for a range of stakeholders and local government duty bearers to increase prioritisation of sanitation.
