Algebraic thinking is a person’s ability to understand, analyze, and solve problems using algebraic concepts to simplify statements and find solutions. Currently, many prospective teachers still lack proficiency in applying algebraic thinking skills. Self-efficacy is one of the factors that influences algebraic thinking ability. This study aims to reveal the relationship between self-efficacy and algebraic thinking skills in pre-service mathematics teachers. In the context of solving math problems, especially algebraic ones, algebraic thinking skills are crucial. Using a qualitative method wit

Algebraic thinking skills are important for students because algebraic thinking will promote ways to interpret mathematics. The results of preliminary research on the algebraic thinking ability of PGMI students showed an average problem solving of 18.46, mathematical modelling of 18.26, reasoning ability of 5.54, analytical thinking of 8.8 and generalization of 17, with a maximum value of 20. These results indicate that for indicators of analytical thinking and reasoning students are still low. Algebraic thinking is important for developing students' mathematical generalization abilities, and identifying patterns, shapes, and symbols. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach that aims to describe the profile of students' algebraic thinking in solving modeling problems. The subjects of this study were 158 fifth-grade students in two private schools in Surakarta, Central Java. The data collection instrument used was six test questions related to the modeling component adopted from Ralston. Prior to use, the instrument was validated by 3 elementary school mathematics learning

This study assessed the awareness in mathematical symbols and algebraic expressions of freshmen students in Naval State University. Employing the descriptive-survey design, there were 150 respondents who answered the questionnaires and also evaluated through a test of their mathematical symbols comprehension skill and ability on assessing algebraic expression. The respondents’ profile revealed that most of them are female with an average age of 17 years old in which they are expected to think abstractly, ideally, logically and presumed to possess skills on recognition symbols according to

Metaphorical thinking is one way of thinking in building abstract concepts through concrete things. Abstract ideas in metaphorical thinking are metaphorized into real-world things. This study aims to describe the metaphorical thinking profile of junior high school students in solving algebraic problems. The problem-solving steps used are the Polya model and the stages of metaphorical thinking using the CREATE criteria by Siler. This research is qualitative research using a descriptive approach. The concept of function has evolved into one of the most fundamental principles in modern mathematics, influencing practically every area. However, it proved to be one of the most difficult ideas to grasp in mathematics. The concept of function is frequently taught without any connection to real-life situations. Students must work with problem scenarios that happen in a variety of contexts that are relevant to their everyday lives or make sense to them in order to gain authentic comprehension. This is consistent with the RME's properties. The unwillingness to highlight the visual element of th

Abstract: Starting from the assumption that very young children exhibit some naive forms of algebraic skills, in this paper we discuss some of our work aimed at inquiry, and in the same time develop, prospective primary teachers’ knowledge involved and required in recognize and interpret pupils’ early forms of algebraic thinking. The research dimension is perceived intertwined with teacher education and practice and thus, the tasks we develop for such work focus on early years’ prospective teachers’ mathematical knowledge specifically related with the work of teaching Early Algebra.
