When it was first produced in 1976,Pacific Overturesattracted praise and opprobrium in almost equal measure. It was characterized by critics as both the supreme intellectual, as well as musical theatrical achievement of the Sondheim–Prince collaborations, and as the most cynical betrayal of the authentic vernacular American tradition of the musical. At a number of levels, both formal and substantive, it is a reflexive exploration of the tension between the national and global conditions of late twentieth-century American cultural identity and ambitions and their relation to the legacy of the Enlightenment origins of American society. The two levels discussed in detail are those of the relations between and modes of representation of the principal characters, and the processes of transition between traditional and modern societies. The chapter argues that the binary structure of the theatrical organization ofPacific Overturesin two sequential parts raises issues of the inevitability of the inversion of progress into tragedy.

Within the context of the Enlightenment’s broader commitment to progress, the chapter considers the treatment of absolutism and the debate about the legacy of Peter the Great, an important theme in Russian writing in the Catherine period. Eighteenth-century writers also used literature (including works about travel) to explore the question of cultural progress and civilization. In the eighteenth century, progress and Enlightenment framed the idea of nation, and questions of national identity were evaluated with reference to Europe. New forms of writing developed to keep pace with these enquiries, and the chapter contains a case study on Nikolai Karamzin’s The Letters of a Russian Traveler, while another case study explores the relationship between literature, biography, and the idea of a philosophical life as examined by Aleksandr Radishchev.

This book offers the first full-length study in English of the relationship between the Odyssey’s main narrative and its para-narratives, the secondary narratives and episodes in a minor key which frequently suspend its progress. Many of the latter group take the form of paradigmatic secondary narratives about matters apparently external to the poem, which are related by the poet and his characters. For the characters, such stories may provide a model of action for imitation or avoidance in their immediate contexts. At a deeper level, they influence the reception of some aspect of the main narrative by the poet’s audience. They draw on Cyclic Epic, folk tales and international stories, alleged personal experience (the material of αἶνος‎), and mythology, which may be altered if necessary to achieve a closer correspondence to the parallel situation in the main narrative. Where details are suppressed or altered, the audience may still experience the reverberations of the better-known version of the tradition: this is particularly apparent in the poem’s unusual use of the Oresteia story. Analogous or parallel situations are inserted into the narrative itself, so that one episode resembles and sheds light on another. Minor-key episodes narrated in the poet’s voice reflect on significant episodes of the main narrative and influence and guide its interpretation. As the poem draws to its close, religious rituals, particularly the Plynteria and Arrephoria, become another kind of para-narrative, their procedures mimicked by the characters as they undergo the transitions effected at the poem’s dénouement.

The affinity between narratives and machines in the eighteenth century reflects the early modern effort to break down the traditional barriers separating the arts and sciences. Leading practitioners sought to establish the foundation of their arts in the sciences and natural philosophers transformed the sciences by incorporating the machines and techniques of artisans. Inspired by these developments, neoclassical critics sought to identify the fundamental mechanics of narrative. Like the machines used in other arts, the novel was understood to be a technical ‘invention’, recently imported from Europe, which needed to be rationalized for an enlightened nation. Once established on scientific principles, the novel could become a simulation device that produced useful knowledge of the principles underlying human behaviour. From these circumstances emerged one of the dominant technical codes of eighteenth-century fiction, a narrative of progress that extended the practical goals of the Industrial Enlightenment into the realm of individual moral development.

This chapter discusses the entwinement of the idea of progress with the theory of international law. Because of the topic’s extensive scope, the chapter limits itself to two arguments. The first is that the impact of the idea of progress in international law should be measured not only against the traction of paradigmatic progress narratives; but also against the pervasiveness of humdrum, prosaic varieties of progress talk. The second point of this chapter is that any kind of progress talk, from the uppercase to the lowercase and back, is theoretical ‘all the way down’. The idea of progress does not merely describe reality ‘an sich’ but imposes a frame over it. Move the frame, and the image becomes muddled. One’s progress is another’s regression, stagnation, or mere directional movement.

What did Romantic writers mean when they wrote about “progress” and “perfection”? This book shows how Romantic writers inventively responded to familiar ideas about political progress which they inherited from the eighteenth century. Whereas earlier writers such as Voltaire and John Millar likened improvements in political institutions to the progress of the sciences or refinement of manners, the novelists, poets, and political theorists examined in this book reimagined politically progressive political associations in multiple genres. While embracing a commitment to optimistic improvement—increasing freedom, equality, and protection from injury—they also cultivated increasingly visible and volatile energies of religious and political dissent. Earlier narratives of progress tended not only to edit and fictionalize history but also to agglomerate different modes of knowledge and practice in their quest to describe and prescribe uniform cultural improvement. But Romantic writers seize on internal division and take it less as an occasion for anxiety, exclusion, or erasure, and more as an impetus to rethink the groundwork of progress itself. Political entities, from Percy Shelley’s plans for political reform to Charlotte Smith’s motley associations of strangers in The Banished Man, are progressive because they advance some version of collective utility or common good. But they simultaneously stake a claim to progress only insofar as they paradoxically solicit contending vantage points on the criteria for the very public benefit which they passionately pursue. The “majestic edifices” of Wordsworth’s imagined university in The Prelude embrace members who are “republican or pious,” not to mention the recalcitrant “enthusiast” who is the poet himself.

The progress of the main narrative of the Odyssey is frequently suspended by the para-narratives told by the poet and his characters. These can take the form of paradigms providing a model of action for imitation or avoidance by a character. They can also guide interpretation of the main narrative by exploring variations on its basic story shape. A veiled hint may be conveyed through an αἶνος‎ purportedly based on personal experience. Previous work on narratives in the Odyssey, including narratology and narrative strategy, is briefly surveyed. The Homeric poems were showcased in the Athenian festival of the Panathenaea, and religious practice becomes a further source of para-narrative as the Athenian rituals of the Plynteria and Arrephoria are evoked by Penelope’s actions and stories as the poem draws to its end. Athenian control of the pan-Ionian festival in Delos may explain the Apollo paradigm used of Odysseus.

Focusing on Christian’s confrontation with Apollyon, this chapter provides an overview of John Bunyan’s first religious allegory and his most famous work of fiction: The Pilgrim’s Progress (originally published in 1678). It considers the enduring literary and imaginative power of The Pilgrim’s Progress by addressing Bunyan’s sophisticated control of popular fiction and the Bible, as well as of metaphor, allegory, and allegorical interpretation within its narrative form. It also places The Pilgrim’s Progress within some of its key theological and historical contexts, including the persecution of Nonconformists, such as Bunyan himself, who suffered throughout the Restoration for the sake of conscience and in the name of religious liberty for Protestant Dissenters.
