This chapter introduces professional ethics as a specific example of applied or practical ethics. The authors provide a short review of the literature on theoretical and applied ethics in order to give context for the subsequent discussion. They examine three foundational concepts of professional ethics: codes adopted by professional bodies, professional autonomy, and the contested role of gatekeeper. Next, the authors consider ethical pressures experienced by professionals in the non-professional organization (NPO), and then the Professional Service Firm (PSF). Here the authors compare the pressure exerted by employer and clients and examine how so-called “client capture” can become a complex phenomenon when both client and professional are corporate entities. Finally, the chapter considers the challenges for the study of ethics in the PSF highlighted by this account.

Chapter 5 looks at how these Christian public theologians compare with other public intellectuals of this period. Because of its significance for our period, the chapter also tries to tease out some of the details of the different intellectual factions that have formed since the late 1990s, paying particular attention to the two major political groupings of ‘new left’ (xin zuo pai) and ‘liberalism’ (ziyou zhuyi). Whilst the revived interests in Confucianism and Christianity are sometimes considered two other factions during this time, the chapter shows how the four schools have much more porous boundaries than is often recognized. The chapter further argues how a ‘Confucian imagination’ shapes various developments in contemporary China, whether this be public intellectualism, generally, or Chinese Christianity, specifically.

This chapter deals with Riemann surfaces, coverings, and hypergeometric functions. It first considers the genus and Euler number of a Riemann surface before discussing Möbius transformations and notes that an automorphism of a Riemann surface is a biholomorphic map of the Riemann surface onto itself. It then describes a Riemannian metric and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, which can be interpreted as a relation between the Gaussian curvature of a compact Riemann surface X and its Euler characteristic. It also examines the behavior of the Euler number under finite covering, along with finite subgroups of the group of fractional linear transformations PSL(2, C). Finally, it presents some basic facts about the classical Gauss hypergeometric functions of one complex variable, triangle groups acting discontinuously on one of the simply connected Riemann surfaces, and the hypergeometric monodromy group.

In this chapter we offer a series of reflections on the ideology of reasons. Among the normative reasons for an agent X to phi, it is common to distinguish between those reasons that the agent possesses and those which she does not. After some background (5.1), we argue (5.2) that possession of a reason requires knowledge. In 5.3, we argue, first, that the normative reason construction is factive, and second, that possession ascriptions can be factored into a normative reason construction and a possession claim. In 5.4, we compare two prominent views concerning the nature of normative reasons: those of Kearns and Star and of John Broome. While both views have significant merit, we argue that they also face some non-trivial challenges, and discuss a range of considerations that can help to adjudicate between these two conceptions.

Bstudy The purpose of this chapter is to understand the third and last important task of parties: managing their legislative delegation. During the years of one-party dominance, the Mexican legislature was famously weak compared to the executive because the president ruled over a hegemonic party that suffered little electoral competition and deputies who were limited to a single term. This changed dramatically when the PAN won the presidency, but was not able to capture a majority in either house of Congress. The work of unifying the PRI’s congressional delegation fell to its national officers and Chamber leaders, who placated the party’s governors and whipped the PRI’s legislators to vote together. To better understand the relations of power and delegation within the PRI’s legislative caucus, the chapter uniquely measures and compares the political and professional backgrounds of those PRI deputies who became or did not become committee chairs across the two periods.

Recebi com alegria o convite da senhora Marcia Arantes Marques, editora chefe da editora Bookerfield, para publicação de minha dissertação de mestrado na Universidade Católica de Brasília, UCB, cuja defesa da banca se deu em 10 de abril de 2015. Foi motivo de satisfação para mim por considerar reconhecimento de um trabalho árduo de quase três anos de muito estudo, pesquisa e tudo o mais, contudo, compreendo que o reconhecimento maior é para o protagonista que compôs o corpus da pesquisa do mestrado, o humorista Chico Anysio, com a personagem Salomé de Passo Fundo, com incisiva crítica política que impunha ao governo e ao então presidente do Brasil, João Baptista de Figueiredo, em pleno regime militar. E por que escolhi esse tema e essa personagem para o trabalho do mestrado? Sempre fui fã do Chico Anysio pelo humor refinado e pelo talento inquestionável por meio dos inúmeros personagens em seus programas humorísticos que eu fazia questão de ver. Alias, quem, no Brasil, não era e é fã do Chico, né. Além de fã, tive uma bela oportunidade com ele. Eu era apresentador de um programa de entrevistas na Rede Mundial de Televisão, atualmente Boa Vontade TV (emissora da Legião da Boa Vontade). O presidente da Instituição, José de Paiva Netto, recebeu o Chico Anysio para a exposição “Volta ao mundo sem sair de casa” na galeria de arte do Templo Ecumênico da LBV, em setembro de 2003, por sinal, uma galeria muito concorrida aqui na capital federal. Para quem não sabe, o Chico tinha também a incrível capacidade de pintar. Só para registro, aquela exposição foi sucesso, todos os quadros foram vendidos na noite do vernissage. Pois bem, Chico me concedeu entrevista exclusiva de 30 minutos. Ali, olho no olho, pude perceber que o talento do humorista e artista era maior do que eu conhecia e imaginava. Foi um Chico Anysio Show singular, com exclusividade! Quando chegou a hora do mestrado, na área da comunicação, eu já tinha em mente a abordagem que gostaria de pesquisar e defender. Mestrado e doutorado começam com um problema, um questionamento; e eu me questionava desde a década de 80, como o humorista conseguia, com a personagem Salomé de Passo Fundo, tecer crítica contundente a um presidente da República, em pleno governo militar, em uma TV aberta, portanto generalista, de grande penetração popular. Mesmo sendo uma crítica refinada, conseguia perpassar por todos os níveis da sociedade e gozava de grande audiência em todos os públicos. Então, foi assim que surgiu o tema, a pesquisa, o embasamento científico e acadêmico que culminaram na dissertação que agora torna-se um livro que, espero, possa servir de apoio a outros pesquisadores que desejam aventurar por essa trilha acadêmica do humor, da comicidade, da crítica política e da comunicação nestes tempos da modernidade. É bom lembrar que fazer humor não é somente ser engraçado, o humor vai além, é preciso ter talento. Como diria Henri Bergson que o riso é a quebra da lógica. E, saber fazer e demonstrar essa quebra da lógica, provocando o riso, é para poucos. Observe que algumas pessoas contam uma piada e todos riem e a mesma piada contada por quem não tem essa habilidade, não provoca o riso. É certo, então, afirmar que despertar o risível, também é ciência. Reafirmo agradecimento ao orientador de minha pesquisa, Prof. Dr. Alexandre Kieling, bem como às Profas. Dras. Cosette Espíndola de Castro e Lucieneida Dováo Praun que compuseram a minha Banca Avaliadora e em especial ao humorista André Lucas, filho de Chico Anysio, que gentilmente cedeu os episódios da Salomé, interpretados pelo pai na década de 1980, para a análise acadêmica. André nos alegrou com a sua presença na Banca, vindo do Rio de Janeiro especialmente para prestigiar o trabalho. Espero que esta pesquisa possa inspirar o leitor a compreender o alcance da abordagem da crítica política no humor de Chico Anysio e, oxalá, incentivar outros estudos de maior profundidade sobre o tema.

Prekladaný vysokoškolský učebný text „Bioenergetika“ by mal slúžiť ako úvod do problematiky štúdia v oblasti bioenergetiky. Táto vedná oblast je v súčasnosti vysoko aktuálna, pretože výsledky získané bioenergetickým výskumom v uplynulých rokoch zreteľne ukazujú, že bioenergetické procesy prebiehajúce v živých systémoch neslúžia “len” na transformáciu energie, ale ovplyvňujú aj priebeh procesov ako sú apoptóza, starnutie, vznik a rozvoj mnohých ochorení (predovšetkým neurodegeneratívnych). Tieto skutočnosti jednoznačne naznačujú potrebu existencie kvalitných učebných textov, ktoré by prijateľným spôsobom umožnili študentom získať potrebné informácie a vedomosti v tejto vednej discipline. Z vyššie uvedených dôvodov sme sa rozhodli vytvoriť tieto učebné texty, ktoré sú vo forme desiatich samostatných kapitol, ktoré však na seba prirodzene a logicky nadväzujú. Jedna kapitola predstavuje v podstate jednu prednášku v rámci kurzu Bioenergetiky, ktorý je realizovaný na Prírodovedeckej fakulte Univerzity Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v Košiciach na magisterskom a doktorandskom stupni študijného programu „Biofyzika“. Zároveň tieto texty môžu poslúžiť aj pri výučbe v študijnom predmete Biochémia, ktorý je prednášaný v bakalárskych a magisterských stupňoch študijných programov “Biochémia” resp. “Biofyzika”. Dovoľujeme si vyjadriť presvedčenie, že tieto učebné texty by mohli byť istým spôsobom nápomocné aj vedeckým pracovníkom pracujúcim v oblasti výskumu týkajúcho sa problematiky transformáci energie v biologických organizmoch a fenoménoch spojených s touto transformáciou. V týchto učebných textoch sú postupne uvádzané poznatky týkajúce sa základných konceptov bioenergetiky, mechanizmov procesov ako sú glykolýza a Krebsov cyklus (okrem podrobného a uceleného popis týchto procesov je tu uvedený aj všeobecný náhľad o prepojenosti týchto procesov ako aj ich začlenenie do kompaktného pohľadu na celkový proces transformácie energie v biologických organizmoch), zloženia štruktúry a funkčnosti biologických membrán (táto oblast je nevyhnutná pre lepšie pochopenie poznatkov, ktoré sú uvedené v nasledujúcich kapitolách). V nasledujúcich kapitolách sa učebný text zaoberá popisom štruktúry a funkcie mitochondrií, pričom veľký dôraz je dávaný na popis vlastností a mechanizmov fungovania štyroch komplexov dýchacieho reťazca a ATP-syntázy. Tieto komplexy vytvárajú podmienky pre existenciu “najdôležitejšieho” bioenergetického procesu, oxidatívnej fosforylácie. V záverečných dvoch kapitolách sú uvedené mechanizmy procesov vytvárajúcich fotosyntézu, jej svetlej aj tmavej fázy. Sú tu relevantné informácie o tomto “druhom” najdôležitejšom bioenergetickom procese prebiehajúcom v mnohých biologických organizmoch a poskytujúcom možnosť transformácie enrgie elektromagnetického žiarenia na energiu “ukrytú” v chemických väzbách určitých chemických molekúl. Chceme vyjadriť naše presvedčenie, že predložené učebné texty “Bioenergetika” budú dobrým “pomocníkom a inšpirátorom” pre mnohých študentov, ktorí sa budú chcieť dozvedieť čo najviac o fascinujúcich štruktúrach a mechanizmoch umožňujúcich transformáciu energie v živých systémoch, bez ktorej by nebola možná existencia života ako ho poznáme. Želáme príjemné a podnetné čítanie a štúdium. URL: www.unibook.upjs.sk The textbook "Bioenergetics" should serve as an introduction to the study of bioenergetics. This field of science is currently highly actual, as the results of the bioenergetics research in recent years clearly show that bioenergetics processes in living systems can "serve" not only to transformation of energy, but also affect the course of processes such as apoptosis, aging, origin and development of many diseases (especially neurodegenerative). These facts clearly indicate the need for the existence of quality teaching texts that would allow students to acquire the necessary information and knowledge in this scientific discipline in an acceptable way. For the above mentioned reasons, we decided to create these textbooks, which are in the form of ten chapters, which naturally and logically follow each other. One chapter basically presents one lecture within the course of Bioenergetics, which is realized at the Faculty of Science of the Pavel Jozef Šafárik University in Košice at the master's and doctoral degree of the study program "Biophysics". At the same time, these texts can also be used for teaching in the study subject Biochemistry, which is taught in the bachelor's and master's degree programs of the study programs "Biochemistry" resp. “Biophysics”. We would like to express our conviction that these textbooks could in some way also help researchers working in the field of the energy transformation in biological organisms and the phenomena associated with this transformation. These textbooks present knowledge about the basic concepts of bioenergetics, the mechanisms of processes such as glycolysis and the Krebs cycle (in addition to a detailed and comprehensive description of these processes, there is also a general view of the interconnectedness of these processes and their incorporation into a compact view of the overall energy transformation in biological organisms), the structure and functionality of biological membranes (this area is necessary for a better understanding of the knowledge presented in the following chapters). In the following chapters, the textbook deals with the description of the structure and function of mitochondria, with great emphasis on the properties and mechanisms of functioning of the four complexes of the respiratory chain and ATP-synthase. These complexes create the basis for the existence of the "most important" process in bioenergetics, oxidative phosphorylation. In the final two chapters, the mechanisms of the processes that produce photosynthesis, its light and dark phases, are presented. There is relevant information about this "second" most important bioenergetics process taking place in many biological organisms and providing the possibility of transforming the energy of electromagnetic radiation into energy "hidden" in the chemical bonds of certain chemical molecules. We want to express our conviction that the textbooks "Bioenergetics" will be a good "helper and inspirer" for many students who want to learn as much as possible about the fascinating structures and mechanisms for energy transformation in living systems, without which it would not be possible existence of life as we know it.
