Recently, the issues of violations of gender identity are becoming more relevant and discussed, the number of patients with a request for a sex change is increasing. The complexity of this issue requires clinicians to be competent in helping transgender people, as they sometimes face many obstacles in the way of receiving care in medical institutions: the lack of specialists in the regions, a clear algorithm for helping transgender people, discrimination, stigmatization, and financial difficulties. At the same time, there are more and more foreign studies devoted to "detransition", i.e. "reverse" gender reassignment, which may indicate existing problems in the diagnosis of these conditions and methods of providing medical care to patients with gender identity disorders. The most difficult issues when working with patients experiencing gender dysphoria, in addition to identifying the true causes of gender identity disorders, are the preservation of fertility after gender-affirmative interventions, possible regrets after operations, and the provision of medical care to minors. Changes in the classification of gender disorders, including the exclusion of transsexualism from the class of mental disorders, creates the basis for discussions about the clinical, psychopathological and phenomenological features of these conditions. The scientific review provides information on the clinical and psychological aspects of gender identity disorders, as well as on therapeutic interventions for individuals with this pathology, using a multidisciplinary approach. Certain stages of the provision of medical and social assistance are described to reduce risks and more successful, professional assistance to persons with a gender incongruence.

Several authors have recently investigated the psychological aspects that play a determinant role in choral singing during adolescence. One of these aspects is vocal identity, which influences the construction of gender identity according to adolescents’ needs and societal gender roles. This article focuses on gender aspects of vocal identity during adolescence and describes a case study carried out with male adolescent singers at a secondary school choir in Spain. Qualitative data were collected and analyzed in order to get a deeper knowledge about the relationship between boys’ vocal identity and their gender identity. There was enough evidence to show that male adolescents felt more engaged with choral singing when they realized that their vocal identity was a powerful tool for constructing their male gender identity.

The article linchpin is the psychological collision of the principal character against the discursive practices of society and aspects of the transformation of her identity in Normal People (2018) as recounted by Judith Butler’s in her concept of gender performativity. It highlights how discursive practices affect the psyche of people and the fact that gender identity is not permanent or constant, but rather fluid. It also reveals how inequality is enforced upon the lives of different characters and how badly they are being victimized by oppression and violence, as a result, they have developed/created their own different gender identity in society. Rooney attempts to show the effects of the discursive and constructed practices on the female characters, particularly, Marianne. Gender-based segregation has been observed in this novel as a result of these discursive practices. The paper shows that there are incidents in Normal People that depict how patriarchal society's constructed practices and regulatory standards on the female body create gender performances. Rooney exponentiates the issue of a woman's place in a patriarchal society through her female protagonists, and the novel examines gender performativity as well as the influence patriarchal culture has on female characters. This research aims to not only establish how gender performativity influences a character's identity but also to show how gender identity is unstable and a matter of construction. However, according to Judith Butler, ideology is imposed on us by social convention or culture. It appears that changes in gender identity can be influenced by many aspects as the social, and economic environment that causes it to occur a change.

This article's area of inquiry is the reactions of black South African women to gender oppression. It also examines whether Helms's Womanist Identity Model is useful in predicting self-related personality characteristics, specifically Locus of control and Self-efficacy. The Womanist Identity Model was predictive of self-efficacy, with Immersion-Emersion and Internalisation subscales making unique contributions to its prediction, but in opposite directions. The Womanist Model was also predictive of Locus of control among black South African women. The findings therefore demonstrated that internalised gender oppression can differentially contribute to this South African sample's perceptions of personal empowerment.

Treatment outcome in transsexuals is expected to be more favourable when puberty is suppressed than when treatment is started after Tanner stage 4 or 5. In the Dutch protocol for the treatment of transsexual adolescents, candidates are considered eligible for the suppression of endogenous puberty when they fulfil the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-RT criteria for gender disorder, have suffered from lifelong extreme gender dysphoria, are psychologically stable and live in a supportive environment. Suppression of puberty should be considered as supporting the diagnostic procedure, but not as the ultimate treatment. If the patient, after extensive exploring of his/her sex reassignment (SR) wish, no longer pursues SR, pubertal suppression can be discontinued. Otherwise, cross-sex hormone treatment can be given at 16 years, if there are no contraindications. Treatment consists of a GnRH analogue (GnRHa) to suppress endogenous gonadal stimulation from B2-3 and G3-4, and prevents development of irreversible sex characteristics of the unwanted sex. From the age of 16 years, cross-sex steroid hormones are added to the GnRHa medication. Preliminary findings suggest that a decrease in height velocity and bone maturation occurs. Body proportions, as measured by sitting height and sitting-height/height ratio, remains in the normal range. Total bone density remains in the same range during the years of puberty suppression, whereas it significantly increases on cross-sex steroid hormone treatment. GnRHa treatment appears to be an important contribution to the clinical management of gender identity disorder in transsexual adolescents.

ABSTRACTGender has been the focus of linguistic and psychological studies, but little is known about its conceptual representation. We investigate whether the conceptual structure of gender – as expressed in participants’ free-listing responses – varies according to gender-related experiences in line with research on conceptual flexibility. Specifically, we tested groups that varied by gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender-normativity. We found that different people stressed distinct aspects of the concept. For example, normative individuals mainly relied on a bigenderist conception (e.g., male/female; man/woman), while non-normative individuals produced more aspects related to social context (e.g., queer, fluidity, construction). At a broader level, our results support the idea that gender is a multifaceted and flexible concept, constituted by social, biological, cultural, and linguistic components. Importantly, the meaning of gender is not exhausted by the classical dichotomy opposing sex, a biological fact, with gender as its cultural counterpart. Instead, both aspects are differentially salient depending on specific life experiences.

To date, almost all team identification inquiries have focused on men’s sport, with minimal studies using women’s sport to examine the concept. Recognizing social identities are fluid and context dependent, the purpose of the current study was to understand the psychological meaning of team among individuals who identify with a women’s sport team. Using an interpretive mode of inquiry, the author conducted interviews with fans of a professional women’s basketball team. Central elements of team meaning were gender equality (contributing to social change) and pure sport (perceptions of game play and player characteristics). These aspects jointly contribute to a paradox experienced by fans, in that perceived purity may be sacrificed in realizing social change. Theoretical implications include the ability of teams to represent social movement organizations, as well as the need for individuals to shed status-irrelevant aspects of an identity to raise a low-status group.

In this invited article, I present an inclusive theory of gender that clarifies its interconnections with gender identity, gender expression, and sexuality. To support this functionalist theory, I summarize findings from an extensive body of mixed methods research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other (LGBTQ+) genders in the United States. I use a feminist-intersectional lens to empirically base and historically situate a theory of gender that is grounded in research of LGBTQ+ communities (butch, femme, bear, leathermen, transgender, drag queens, and family/house systems). I define genders as either sets of personal qualities within a culture associated with physiological sex or sets of qualities that evolve in reaction to limitations of existing genders. The evolution of genders functions to meet needs in four domains: (1) psychological: an experience of fit between a core aspect of self and a gender construct; (2) cultural: the creation of an LGBTQ+ culture that asserts sets of gender characteristics, which were denied and stigmatized within preexisting cultural norms; (3) interpersonal: the communicating of affiliation and status to enhance safety; and (4) sexual: an erotic embodiment of signifiers of these needs via an aesthetic that structures sexual attraction. I detail how each function affects identity, security, belonging, and personal and social values. The gender identity of every person represents an integral part of their personality and belong to one of the basic aspects of self-definition, dignity and freedom. A certain number of people do not identify themselves with the sex allotted to them at birth, a problem arising regarding their inner comprehension of gender (self-defining), which does not correlate to the sex. Those people are called trans people. In this paper, the author examines the position of trans people i.e. individuals of different gender identity through the prism of the realization and protection in the field of labour rights and the rights arising from employment. Trans people belong to one of the most vulnerable (most discriminated) groups within society - discrimination is most evident in case of seeking a work placement and during employment, while the key performers are the state and its institutions. It could be said that conditioning and interdependence between the legal procedure of adjustment of gender identity and medical interventions, leave the legal and life status of a transgender person in "vacuum", which leads to the situation of gender identity being the grounds for further transphobia and discrimination of transgender people in all the aspects of human rights realization. However, in the procedure of further adjustment of gender identity, a transgender person can be registered in the birth certificate register, they can change their personal documents only based on the certificate of a health institution that they have been through a psychological check-up and a year-long hormone therapy prescribed by an endocrinologist. In practice, such regulations put "on hold" the personal status of a transgender person, which leads to the discrimination of transgender people based on gender identity, especially in the phase of transition, when the changes are visible but non-compliant with the sex verified in personal documents. Therefore, it is crucial that, instead of partial amendments to certain laws, an umbrella law (lex specialis) be adopted - Law on Gender identity

Social aspects, including parents, are likely to influence the development of gender identity. As parents' actions and behaviours convey meaning to their children, they contribute to the formation of the children's gender identity development. The present study aims to investigate the parental influence on the gender identity development of a child character named Claude in Laurie Frankel's This Is How It Always Is. This study is a literary criticism concerning the issue of gender identity development in a literary work viewed from a psychological approach. The data were collected from a novel entitled This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel and analyzed using the social cognitive theory of gender development by Bussey Bandura (1999). The results of the study revealed that his parents influence Claude's gender identity development through the process of modelling as a part of observational learning, which is also supported by parents' evaluative reactions such as rewards or punishments. The process of modelling reveals egalitarian gender roles and sexual orientation modelled and Claude's attention to his mother as an ideal female model, alongside with how parents convey affective reactions such as acceptance and approval on Claude's gender orientation.

Purpose: This paper aims to analyze the portrayal and presentation of memory, gender, and identity in selected psychological thrillers. Approach/Methodology/Design: The selected films are Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound and James Mangold’s Identity. For the analysis of these films, the researcher employs both narrative and structural approaches; thematic analysis, psychoanalysis, and also feminist film theory. Findings: The results of the analysis show that apart from building suspense and mysteries with the identity issue, these thrillers question the stereotypes and inequality in society through the female characters for the consumerist audience. Hence, these films attempt to break the chains of legitimated stereotypes in the society which create binaries in the lives of people. Practical Implications: The portrayal of illness in psychological thrillers has attracted a lot more audience to seats. Dissociative elements such as memory and identity of the mind perhaps have permeated the film-going experience. The paper showcases these aspects in the selected films. Originality/value: The picturization of the fading identity and the double personality of the characters are central to the interior experience. The capturing of Amnesia and its related themes of memory, identity, and distributed consciousness are common materials in recent films because they can stretch to basic humanistic concerns and contemporary psycho-social issues.

In line with a family systems perspective, this study examined the association between two aspects of family climate, that of coparenting (cooperation, triangulation) and parenting (autonomy support, dependency-oriented and achievement-oriented psychological control) and their relation to adolescent personal identity formation (commitment making, identification with commitment, exploration in breadth, exploration in depth, ruminative exploration, reconsideration of commitment). Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we tested the hypothesis that coparenting would be associated with adolescent identity formation via parenting. Cross-sectional self-report data were collected from 1,105 Swiss adolescents (aged 13–18 years; 51% female). SEM revealed associations between coparental cooperation and more adaptive identity formation via parental autonomy support. Conversely, coparental triangulation was associated with maladaptive identity dimensions via parental dependency-oriented psychological control. These associations were not moderated by age, gender, or family structure.

Are there trans-religious, trans-cultural constants in psychological aspects of religion across different religions and cultures? An excessively culturalistic approach may overlook this possibility, putting an emphasis on the uniqueness of the religious phenomenon studied as emerging from a complex of multiple contextual factors. This article reviews empirical studies in psychology of religion in the 1990s that mainly include participants from different Christian denominations, but also from other religions: Muslims, Jews and Hindus. It appeared, at first, that several cross-cultural/religious differences can be documented (especially between Catholics and Protestants), but the interpretation of these differences is not simple, as other factors may interfere. Secondly it turned out that an impressive series of psychological constants also exist across different denominations, religions, and cultures. These constants include personality correlates, gender and gender orientation, positive and negative values, cognitive and affective aspects, identity formation, social attitudes and consequences.

The article deals with the aspects of social and psychological adaptation in elderly and senile age and analyses the conditions for successful aging. The authors assume that people in elderly age have significant individual characteristics and, as a consequence, research results are often contradictory. It is shown that the socio-psychological adaptation in elderly patients is determined by individual psychological qualities, by specificity of their identity, by strategies of their adaptation to old age. This may be the strategy of the "closed loop" type, that is maintenance of self as an individual, or an alternative strategy, maintaining self as a personality. It was noted that adaptation to old age was flying differently in women and men, which may be due to gender differences in lifestyle, the strongest identification of some men with occupational roles, and of women with homework and family obligations. It is shown that successful aging contributes to the formation of androgynous type of gender identity, which provides flexibility in respond to different situations.

The Ethical Duality in Sports: Social and Psychological Aspects of Transgender ParticipationHistorically the notion about the understanding of women has been patriarchal in nature. The postmodern world has an inclination to redefine social mores. The prevailing thought in the 20th and 21st centuries supports the same thesis. The transformation of attitudes appears to be a regular phenomenon in the understanding of the issue at hand, thereby enlivening the motif of unity between the two. Gender, transgender, sexuality, etc., are in a state of transformation, so that to interpret and reinterpret a state of understanding and re-understanding of the issue of participation in sports has multiple significations. Sport in the 21st century constructs inimitable challenges for trans-athletes. A broad spectrum of identities is included under the umbrella of transgender identity. Transsexual or transitioned athletes may pose the greatest challenge to equity in sex-segregated sport competition. The subject under deliberation has a large number of interpretations, all of which center on a need to ‘deconstruct’ the present structuration of acceptance of sex and gender terminology. There is certainly a need to think and contemplate in broader terms about the meanings that assess the well-defined boundaries between disciplines of research. The present thesis highlights a deconstructive stance.

The article deals with a holistic analysis of the problem of gender identification as a subjective, social and psychological reality in the period of adulthood. In the context of the personal-egalitarian paradigm it is stated that sex-role identification is the leading mechanism of gender identity as a process and results of motivational and value dispositions of the person during period of adulthood. Gender identification plays an important role in the formation of gender self-consciousness of a person, in formation of her/his self-image, and acquiring the requirements for gender-role behavior. Gender identity characterized as being marked by awareness of gender-role cultural standards as well as social and psychological instructions, accepting the traditional or egalitarian modes of behavior, formation of ego-structures in the continuum of masculinity and femininity, by representation of the individual experience of self-knowledge and attitudes to evaluating oneself and others, by agreement and balancing between the real and ideal gender Self. The author’s model of sex-role identification of personality in adulthood is shown. The content of psychological mechanisms and the patterns of functioning of personal gender identity as a subjective, social and psychological reality in adulthood in the context of humanistic, genetic and cognitive psychology are defined. Masculinity and femininity as individual’s attributes are the basic categories in the analysis of sex-role «I» formation. In addition, gender orientations (traditional or egalitarian) are important indicators of individual’s self-identification. Although the practical aspect of the gender identity question is quite «open», however it has a profound inner layer, as it encompasses a lot of unrevealed psychological mechanisms of personal and spiritual development of a human.

The changes that have affected all spheres of society have also affected the existing stereotypes of gender behaviour, so the issue of the place and role of men and women in society focuses on research on the aspirations, interests and preferences of both sexes. Gender issues are studied in an interdisciplinary aspect, so recently there have been many studies in which the subject of discussion concerns different fields of science - psychology, philosophy, linguistics, journalism, sociology, political science and many others. To study the gender sphere of concept of contemporary periodicals for women and men, the following scientific methods are considered: descriptive method, analysis, content analysis, questionnaire, comparative method and induction. However, an attempt has been made to analyze different approaches to the study of concepts (in particular, gender). There are many different definitions of the concept, which indicates the complexity and ambiguity of the “concept” meaning, but there is a limit to the scientific description and understanding of the concept. The gender sphere of concept is a system of interactions of maximum concepts of man and woman, as well as their derivatives, which are called gender and social roles in society performed by man and woman. Concepts, sphere of concept include gender features, which allow a gender approach to study the gender sphere of concept of contemporary periodicals for women and men. The study of the gender sphere of concept within the framework of contemporary gender-labelled publications allows to identify and correlate metagender and gender concepts that appear in society.

The concept of autonomy has a long history, not only in psychology, but also in philosophy. In this article, the concept is discussed in relation to gender and mental health. The criticisms of several authors with regard to the classical psychological concept of autonomy are reviewed. Also, some recent theoretical developments which start from a psychoanalytical perspective are discussed. Then the reader is introduced to the construction of a new Autonomy scale that takes the criticism mentioned into account and connects with new insights into gender identity. Two studies are presented in which the structure of the scale, as well as it validity and reliability, is investigated. The Autonomy scale appears to measure consistently three aspects: Self‐awareness, Sensitivity to Others, and Capacity for Managing New Situations. Reliability and validity are satisfactory. Furthermore, in a third study the factor structure found in Studies 1 and 2 was cross‐validated in a more heterogeneous, adult sample. This cross‐validation was also done across the sexes. It is concluded that the Autonomy scale is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the new autonomy concept in various populations. Secondly, the scale seems to fill the gap that is left open by more classically oriented autonomy (and dependence) scales by measuring Sensitivity to Others, an important aspect of femininity and thus for female identity.

Bern's ,)'ex Role Inventory (SRI) was administered to 20 young adults who then watched video clips of television advertisements. The focus group discussions about the advertisements were analyzed within the context of the respondents ' gender schemas identified via the Bern SRI score: masculine. feminine, androgynous or und(tferentiated. The centrality of gender identity to self-schemas affected how consumers processed and interpreted the advertising. This provides support for a more differentiated approach to representing men and women within gender research and advertising.

This paper seeks lo challenge the tendency lo represent gender as a unitary theoretical construct, and would argue for a more di.fjerentiated view of how the psychological aspect of gender influence the perception of advertising This paper use a small-scale exploratory study to examine the potential impact o,f'gender identity within consumer' self - schemas on their perception of advertising.

The article discusses the view of a metropolis, due to the formation of metropolis identity. This identity is associated with a complex of sociocultural, socio-psychological processes, including the process of socialization in a big city. In a metropolis, patriarchal stereotypes are manifested to a lesser extent than in small cities, which contribute to a more rigid consolidation of gender roles. There is a smoothing of the gender aspects of consciousness. This situation is due to the fact that, on the one hand, the socialization of residents of megacities, as well as residents of other territories, occurs within the framework of gender culture. But, on the other hand, residents of megacities in everyday life are much more likely to encounter practices that go beyond the framework of the traditional socio-gender system. The paper provides empirical examples illustrating the characteristics of a metropolitan identity. Gender smoothing is taking place when evaluating the activities of educational and cultural institutions. Approximately equal shares of men and women assess the activities of educational and cultural institutions as high-level work. The low -level work of educational and cultural institutions is also estimated by men and women in approximately equal proportions. The results of the study show that men living in megacities stand in solidarity with women in their assessments. This may indicate that men and women are equally involved in raising children, which reflects the process of smoothing out gender stereotypes. No gender differences were also found when studying respondents' assessments of certain aspects of the social sphere. It is shown that the gender aspects of consciousness remain when assessing the sphere of health care. Significant differences in assessments of health care institutions exist when studying the question of satisfaction with the quality of state medical services, the availability of medical care and the work of ambulances. It is concluded that the smoothing of the gender aspects of consciousness is caused not only by personal characteristics but also by the individual living in a big city.

The aspects of formation of gender culture of students in the process of studying psychological and pedagogical disciplines are revealed. Gender education and upbringing were studied as a psychological and pedagogical problem. Generalized existing approaches to the interpretation of the key concept of the study, which gave grounds for interpreting its own definition of the phenomenon of "gender culture". The essence and peculiarities of the gender culture of modern student youth have been established. The pedagogical conditions for the formation of the gender culture of student youth in the process of studying psychological and pedagogical disciplines are grounded: 1) the content of the content of educational disciplines is filled with a gender theme aimed at the formation of contemporary ideas about the relationship of the sexes among students; 2) the use of interactive technologies that will be based on improving the personality-oriented approach to increasing the motivation of student youth to form their own gender culture; 3) the organization of teachers of psychological and pedagogical disciplines of out-of-class work with student youth, aimed at the destruction of established and the formation of modern gender stereotypes. Realization of pedagogical conditions of formation of gender culture of students in the process of studying of psychological and pedagogical disciplines allowed us: to acquaint students with information about gender problems in modern society; promote the assimilation of the conceptual and terminological apparatus of gender studies, the formation of knowledge about gender theories, awareness in the legal and regulatory framework, the formation of ideas about the characteristics of gender and gender identity of a person; to focus on building humane interpersonal relations and recognizing the ideas of gender equality in the public and private spheres of life; form behavior based on gender.

The birth of an individual with a blend of both male and female internal or external genitalia is known as an intersex condition. The incidence of genital anomalies is estimated to occur in 1 in 4,500 live births. Each intersex condition is determined by the external genital appearance, internal genital structures, and fertility potential. The main concept involved in the management of intersex is the establishment of an experienced multidisciplinary team. Management of intersex conditions is complex and involves a person’s gender identity, gender role behavior, sexual orientation, sexual functioning, and psychological adjustment. This review will outline the management of intersex in the light of the latest research. We focus on diagnosis, surgical techniques, and the psychological aspects that are encountered in the management of intersex.

According to the aim (to identify the features of the connection of fears, phobias, anxiety with self-esteem of adolescence), an empirical study was conducted, in which the respondents were representatives of school and student youth, namely 120 people: 60 students of 10-11 grades (15-17 years) of Vyshhorod comprehensive school No2 and No3. This sample was chosen not by chance. After all, it is in adolescence is the active development and formation of all components of self-awareness, including self-esteem. According to the age periodization of M. Savchyn and L. Vasylenko, adolescence is divided into two groups: representatives of early youth (15-18 years) and late youth (18-23 years) or senior school and student age. The presented study covers only certain aspects of such a complex phenomenon as self-assessment. As its subject was the socio- psychological features of self-attitude of adolescents and young people, other social and age categories, as well as socio-psychological factors influencing the features of self-attitude, in particular: financial status, degree of self-realization and more. The study of this problem requires further comprehensive research, because adequate positive self-attitude is the most optimal for the formation and development of personality, determines the achievement of its inner harmony. In our further study of self-assessment, a promising direction, in our opinion, is to clarify the features of this phenomenon in other age groups. Consideration of the influence of gender on the peculiarities of self-assessment, in this perspective, will be useful in both theoretical and practical aspects.

AbstractContextIn 46,XY disorders of sexual development (DSD) patients, several factors may affect psychosexual development, leading to gender identity discrepancy and gender change later in life. Prenatal sexual steroid exposure and external genital virilization are considered to influence human psychosexual development, but their roles not completely understood yet.DesignA total of 144 individuals (18 to 60 years of age) with a clinical/molecular diagnosis of 46,XY DSD from a single tertiary center were enrolled. Psychosexual outcomes (gender role, gender identity, and sexual orientation) were assessed using questionnaires and psychological test. The Sinnecker score was used for genital virilization measurement. Prenatal androgen exposure was estimated according to 46,XY DSD etiology.ResultsWe found a positive association between prenatal androgen exposure and male psychosexual outcomes. Alternatively, prenatal estrogen exposure, age of gonadectomy, and the degree of external genital virilization did not influence any psychosexual outcome. There were 19% (n = 27) with gender change, which was associated with prenatal androgen exposure (P < 0.001) but not with the external genital virilization. The median age of gender change was 15 years, but most of the patients reported the desire for gender change earlier.ConclusionsPrenatal androgen exposure influenced psychosexual development in 46,XY DSD favoring male psychosexuality in all psychosexual outcomes, whereas the degree of external genital virilization did not influence these outcomes. The organizational effect of sexual steroids on psychosexuality at puberty appears to be weak in comparison with the prenatal effects. Prenatal androgen exposure also influenced female-to-male gender change frequency. All 46,XY DSD conditions with prenatal androgen exposure must be followed for gender issues in their management.

Psychological theorists have typically treated sexual and racial identity as discrete and independent developmental pathways. While this simplifying division may make it easier to generate theory, it may also make it less likely that the resulting theory will describe people's real-life developmental experiences. In this article, Alex Wilson examines identity development from an Indigenous American perspective, grounded in the understanding that all aspects of identity (including sexuality, race and gender) are interconnected. Many lesbian, gay and bisexual Indigenous Americans use the term "two-spirit" to describe themselves. This term is drawn from a traditional worldview that affirms the inseparability of the experience of their sexuality from the experience of their culture and community. How can this self-awareness and revisioning of identity inform developmental theory? The author offers personal story as a step toward reconstructing and strengthening our understanding of identity.

This article is devoted to the analysis of the results of theoretical and applied research of gender aspects of the "hidden curriculum" at the level of secondary educational institution. It is determined that the Ukrainian education system declares the importance of gender equality, proclaims the development of gender-oriented education, but gender stereotypes are often reproduced in practice of educational activities, certain gender roles and patterns of thinking, social expectations, ways of behaving are imposed, that is, the gender aspects of the "hidden curriculum" are implemented. The article presents an analysis of gender aspects of such structural elements of the "hidden curriculum" as the educational environment of a secondary school; the content of education; interpersonal communication in the learning process. In the study of the components of the "hidden curriculum" were used: gender analysis of the educational institution with the calculation of the index of gender parity; web application (Voyant Tools) for analysis of school documentation; questionnaires, interviews, surveys to identify gender stereotypes and segregation by gender; gender expertise of textbooks in certain fields of gender analysis; gender expertise of lessons. The analysis of the results of the survey of teachers and gender expertise of lessons showed manifestations of "hidden curriculum" among educators. Gender stereotypes about the "sexuality" of human qualities and psychological traits were revealed; rejection of feminine gender-specific job title and gendered educational space; support for various programs for girls and boys on labor training (Design and technology). Although the vast majority of educators consider achieving gender equality a pressing issue, they acknowledge their ignorance of the "hidden curriculum" and are willing to work with gender experts. The results of the survey of the students in 5-8 grades also confirmed the presence of gender stereotypes in the communication of teachers with the students; the dominance of students' sympathies for various subjects; found gender stereotypes regarding the use of free time. Gender examination of textbooks revealed a small number of gender stereotypes and showed positive changes in terms of gender equality and sensitivity in the new textbooks.

Gender identity - the subjective experience of membership to a gender - is generally taken for granted by most of the persons. It is part of our general identity, and provides a sense of continuity of the self, and interrogative on this aspect of our life are barely present in our consciousness. Exceptions are represented by stages of development such as adolescence or some categories of persons who do not identify themselves into the dichotomous world of men/female. The debate on gender identity recently has broken into the consciousness for Psychopathology, rising interrogatives from different perspectives, including Medicine, Phycology, Anthropology, and Ethic. In the present symposium we resume the historical trajectory of gender definition, emphasizing the importance of a different perspective on gender than the common definition provided by western culture. We propose a phenomenological perspective on the components of sexual identity, which includes anatomical sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender role. The phenomenological approach is coherent with the dimensional view on sexual identity proposed by the DSM board, as well as by LGBT movements. This position considers Gender Dysphoria and transsexualism as a pole of gender variants continuum. Phenomenology looks at the comprehension of subjective gender heterogeneity, and the subjective world of gender dysphoric persons as the only way to take care of them; every psychological medical or surgical treatment should come as consequences. The phenomenological perspective on gender dysphoria may be useful to understand and partially explain the different subjective satisfaction to common hormonal and surgical treatment.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

The article explores and analyzes the problem of gender equality among cadets and students of higher educational institutions, in particular aviation and technical. The appropriate methods and main aspects of solving the problem are defined. In addition, various methods for introducing gender equality into the educational process are provided and the relevant work of the teacher during classes is presented. At present, gender equality among cadets and students of aviation and technical universities is an urgent problem in Ukraine, because the humanization and democratization of modern society envisage the orientation of our State towards establishing universal human truths and standards. First of all, gender theory should be integrated into the system of scientific knowledge and educational disciplines. Educators should implement planned educational activities aimed at identifying and neutralizing gender stereotypes that form the basis for non-compliance with gender parity and discrimination. Thus, teachers should ensure gender equality among students of higher educational institutions, including cadets and students of aviation and technical higher educational institutions. It is also worth noting that observance of human rights is being formed as a certain ideal, the main means for which is the achievement of the general principles of law, and its fundamental principle is the multi-aspect principle of gender equality. However, given the aforesaid matters, equality of genders does not mean only their biological identity or ignoring physical capabilities along with the mental and psychological characteristics. On the contrary, differences should not be negatively reflected in the living conditions of both men and women, thereby causing discrimination.

Using a sample of 203 African American late adolescents aged 16 to 19 years (Mage = 17.77 years), we examined whether two aspects of gender identity—gender typicality and felt pressure for gender conformity—were related to self-esteem. Racial centrality (i.e., the importance of race to the individual’s self-concept) and gender were tested as moderators of these relations. Compared to girls, boys reported that they were more typical of their gender group (i.e., gender typicality) and that they experienced greater pressure to conform to traditional gender norms (i.e., felt pressure). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that gender typicality was positively related to self-esteem among girls and boys and that the relation was stronger for girls. Racial centrality moderated the relation between gender typicality and self-esteem, such that the relation was weaker for youth who reported higher levels of racial centrality. Felt pressure was negatively related to self-esteem for both boys and girls. These results underscore the importance of considering both gender and race as social identities as we seek to understand African American adolescents’ psychological adjustment.

The article discusses the methods of anesthetization of the image of androgyne as one of the ways of androgynization of modern culture. A modern understanding of the phenomenon of androgyny is mainly considered in the context of gender identity. It is based on the psychological concept of Sandra Bem that has proved that a person, regardless of his or her biological sex, is able to combine feminine and masculine psychological characteristics and behavior models. That allows them to become more adaptive in society and act as efficiently as possible, choosing exactly what qualities to show depending on the situation. Some studies have noticed the dominance of the androgynous type among the youth, which possibly indicates the intensification of the androgynization process in modern society. Androgynization goes at various social and cultural levels: professional, economic, cultural, psychological and pedagogical. Moreover, some researchers observe the trend of formation of androgynous gender identity type. They also consider the process of androgynization in line with the civilizational approach. The present study focuses on analyzing one of the aspects of this global androgynization process — the effect of an art cinema work on the positive reception of androgyny in society through modeling of an aesthetically attractive androgynous image. As an illustration the author chose an image of the main hero in «Orlando» movie (1992) directed by Sally Potter.

Compared to the general population, transpersons are exposed to higher levels of discrimination and violence. The stigmatization of transpersons can lead to physical and psychological problems. In particular, transindividuals exhibit a higher prevalence of depression compared to the cispopulation. The gender minority stress model (GMSM) provides a comprehensive theoretical basis to interpret these biopsychosocial interactions. Using the GMSM, this study aimed to identify associations between experience of stigmatization and the mental health of transitioned transpersons using correlational analyses and multiple regression models. In total, 143 transpersons were recruited. Multivariate analyses identified three variables (i.e., unemployment, nonaffirmation of gender identity, and internalized transphobia) to explain variance of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, a mediation of the proximal factors between distal factors and depressive symptoms was found. However, the moderating effect of resilience factors was not demonstrated. The results confirmed the importance of distal and proximal minority stressors for the mental health of transpersons. At the same time, the protective influence of resilience factors seemed to be surprisingly minor. In the treatment of transpersons, practitioners should not only focus on somatic aspects, but also consider the person’s previous experiences of stigmatization.

Trans men are people who, based on their genitals, were assigned the status of female at birth. However, their identity and their way of living gender do not correspond to the socially established norms. In this paper, we discuss the different perspectives in relation to transgender people and their desire for parenthood. This review, and the basis of this paper, is inspired by the case of a trans man who desired gestation with his own genetic material. He began the cycle of assisted reproduction when he was a legally recognized woman, but that attempt ended with a miscarriage. From that assisted reproduction cycle, four embryos remained frozen. After the failed experience of gestation, the person completed his transition. Now legally a man, he attempted to gestate using his reproductive organs. This literature review aimed to identify relevant studies describing the relationship between transgender person and biological parenthood. This study comprehensively addresses important aspects one should know when considering a transgender pregnancy. These factors include biological, psychological, social, and legal issues. After reviewing the state-of-the-art information on trans parenthood, the main conclusion is that ‘the desire to have a child is not a male or female desire but a human desire’.

Managers play a key role in realizing a humane organization of work. Transformational leadership aims to identify and examine leadership behaviors that strengthen employees’ awareness of the importance and values of task outcomes by articulating a vision for the future, providing a realistic action plan, and giving individualized support. Previous studies have revealed associations between transformational leadership and the psychological wellbeing of employees in different settings, while others did not find such associations. As research based on longitudinal data remains rare, this study builds on longitudinal data from two employee surveys conducted in 2015 and 2018 in a medium-sized German company. In this study, transformational leadershipt0 and gender had a significant impact on transformational leadershipt1, while psychological wellbeing∆, social capital∆, and age did not. Psychological wellbeingt0 and social capital∆ had a significant impact on psychological wellbeingt1, but transformational leadership∆, age, and gender did not. Therefore, it is worthwhile for companies to invest in social capital and focus on gender aspects at work. As underlying mechanisms regarding employees’ psychological wellbeing may differ between companies, it is worthwhile for each organization to conduct mental risk assessments to identify “red flags” and implement suitable measures.

The aim of the study is to contribute to the “well-being, diversity, equity, and inclusion” dialogue of the post-pandemic era. Specifically, we explored the joint effects of biological sex and gender diversity in self-identity on the role demands—work and family conflict relationships. To advance the inclusion of scientific knowledge, the present study was conducted in the cultural context of a Chinese society. We surveyed a sample of 317 Taiwanese employees. We used structured questionnaires to collect data on biological sex, gender identity (self-endorsement on masculinity and femininity traits), work and family demands, work-to-family conflict (WFC), and family-to-work conflict (FWC). We found two sets of significant three-way interactions (sex × femininity × role demands) in predicting work and family conflict. First, for men, identifying with high femininity traits strengthened the positive relationship between work demands and FWC; for women, identifying with low femininity traits strengthened the same relationship. Second, for men, identifying with high femininity traits strengthened the relationship between family demands and WFC; for women, identifying with low femininity traits strengthened the same relationship. Our findings highlight the importance of jointly examining the biological, psychological, and social aspects of gender on the work and family interface. Contextualizing in an Eastern cultural tradition, we put the spotlight on societal pressure on people of nontraditional gender identities.

Gender dysphoria is a medical term used in the American Psychiatric Association (APA) textbook to describe the distress of the transgender person in the face of a sense of inadequacy between their assigned sex and their gender identity. The work we present is based on a clinical case in which we have retained the diagnosis of gender dysphoria comorbid with other psychiatric disorders after several close consultation appointments, and through which we will address the socio-cultural aspect of this disorder within our society Adults with gender dysphoria can benefit from psychological, medical and surgical treatment in France. However, this dysphoria rarely appears in adulthood, often being present since childhood and adolescence and generating difficulties in family, social and school life, particularly at the time of puberty. It is necessary to take adequate care of patients with gender dysphoria, often generating psychological suffering responsible for numerous comorbidities.

The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological aspects of corruption in public administration through a combination of methods such as the non-systematic review, a semi-structured interview, a survey questionnaire, and observations of the anti-corruption court hearings. The study employed a case research design using the exploratory research strategy. It relied on a combination of data collection methods. The study was designed as a flow of three basic stages such as identification of psychological factors of corruption, validation of factors, and assessment of relative importance of every factor using the Triangular Assessment Method. It provided first-hand evidence and cases for the course in “Psychological, Behavioural and Economic Triggers of Corruption.” The IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0.0.1. Software was used to process the yielded data. The study found that civil servants’ ambitions to get rich quick, their low self-esteem, psychological dependencies, community-accepted image, sense of impunity were the major psychological aspects pushing the people to corruption in Ukraine. It was also found that the sense of impunity could be considered to be the primary psychological impact factor stimulating corruption actions by the civil servants, specifically. The self-esteem could be regarded as a second important psychological factor of corruption in public administration, which is related to the persons’ vision of their role in the community. The third important factor was ambitions driven by ‘easy money’ and status. The last two factors such as psychological dependencies, the community-accepted image were judged to be the least important ones. Further in-depth research is needed to identify the gender difference in the psychological aspects of corruption in public administration.

More than a decade has passed since the landmark High Court decision in Marion’s Case,1 where the Court authorised the sterilisation of a young woman who suffered from a disability. Recently, the principles established in that case were applied by the Family Court in a different context – for the provision of hormonal treatment for a 13 year old child,2 some aspects of which are irreversible. Previously, the Family Court had authorised gender reassignment surgery for a child suffering from a physical, congenital condition,3 but notably in Re Alex, the subject child suffered no identified physical condition indicating treatment, but from an identified psychological condition, gender identity dysphoria. This article considers the issues raised by recent applications of the principles relating to the capacity of children to consent to medical treatment, including the decision in Re Alex and the application of those principles to transgender and intersex children. While not all children or adults who identify as transgender or intersex choose the long and difficult path of gender reassignment, some will choose surgical gender reassignment or hormonal treatment at some stage of their lives. In cases where it is proposed that a minor undergo such treatment, the application of the principles of child consent poses particular difficulties.

The article discusses the role of natural and artificial smells in regulation of social interaction. It is pointed out that olfactory self-representation is not only cultural, but socio-psychological phenomenon as well. The article presents results of the empirical study of gender socio-psychological characteristics of olfactory self-presentation of a personality that has been carried out on a sample of 170 persons (90 men and 80 women aged 18–55 years old). It has been pointed out that smell can act as a marker of gender identity, carry information about character, personal trains, and act as a symbol of situation and well-being. The author comes to the conclusion that there are gender differences in characteristics of olfactory self-presentation of a personality that are conditioned by individual and socio-psychological peculiarities of a personality. The applied aspect of the problem under study can be realized in imagology and advertising.

The present paper attempts to closely study Virginia Woolf’s Orlando in terms of Judith Butler’s concepts of gender, performativity, and agency. Woolf examines women, their struggles and positions in literary history, and their needs for independence. Themes in her works consist of gender relations, class hierarchy, and the consequences of war. In most of her novels, she moves away from the use of plot and character and, instead, emphasizes the psychological aspects of her characters. In Orlando, the protagonist lives through centuries and Woolf allows her character to transform into a female halfway during the novel. The novel is directly engaged in the women’s position and mentality through the lines, dialogues, and events. The principal question of the present study focuses on the perspectives through which gender is presented and the way it could be observed in relation to Butler’s theory of gender as performance. The current survey is further concerned with the angles through which the novel reflects gender troubles and identity crisis of the women, conventionally defined as a minor category, according to Judith Butler’s poststructuralist approach to the analysis of identity. Consequently, there is a confluence between the development of Woolf’s female characters in the novel and Butler’s critical notion concerning the subject’s attempts to present performativity in the form of an active agent.

Abstract Introduction: Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is defined as a group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by a deficiency of the enzyme required to synthesize cortisol by the adrenal cortex. Defects in the 21-hydroxylase enzyme make up 90% of CAH. These defects impaired cortisol synthesis leading to an ACTH increase resulting in androgen excess in both salt-wasting (SW) or simple virilizing (SV) forms. As androgens play a role in the human psychosexual development favoring male psychosexuality, this study was designed to evaluate the impact of androgen exposure on the psychosexuality of individuals with CAH due 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Methods: This retrospective cohort includes 46,XX individuals (115 female-assigned; 8 male-assigned) with a molecular diagnosis of CAH due to CYP21A2 pathogenic variants in homozygous or compounds heterozygous state. External genitalia virilization was scored using Prader scale. Phenotype, time at diagnosis, sex assignment, and gender change were assessed. The gender role at childhood was assessed through the playmates and toys profile at childhood. Gender identity was assessed by a projective psychological test (HTP). Sexual orientation was assessed by self-report sexual identity. Compliance of glucocorticoid replacement was assessed by adequate testosterone and androstenedione serum levels for age. Results: CAH was diagnosed at the neonatal time in 73% (n=78). Fifth-nine (51%) had the SW form and 49% (n=56) had the SV form. While all cases of SW were diagnosed at the neonatal time (0.12 ± 0.14 months), the mean age at diagnosis among SV was 6.03 ± 8.45 years (p=<.001). The median of Prader score was 3 in both forms. Male sex assignment was associated with more virilized external genitalia (p=.002). Gender change occurred in 6 cases (female to male), all with SV form. The prader score was higher among those who changed gender (p=.01). All of those who changed their gender had poor treatment compliance. A total of 13% (n=15) of all groups defined themselves as homosexual. There was a strong association between male toys and preference for male playmates in childhood with homosexuality and male gender identity in adulthood with both gender change from female to male and homosexuality. Conclusion: Prenatal androgen exposure favors male psychosexuality in 46,XX CAH individuals as observed by the association between highest Prader scores and all assessed psychosexual outcomes. This influence is also substantiated by post-natal androgen exposure as observed by compliance issues and late diagnosis among those who changed from female to male gender.

The literature on online gaming has generally focused on male gamers and has been dominated by negative aspects of gaming. The present study addresses the gender gap in this field by exploring experiences of female gamers further by unravelling several positive experiences alongside some potentially harmful tendencies connected to gaming, including female gamers’ wishes and ambitions for their future gaming. A total of 20 female adult gamers across Europe were interviewed and results were analysed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: (i) to be or not to be a (female) gamer; (ii) improving social skills and levelling up on mental health; (iii) not always a healthy escape; and (iv) there is more to explore. The present study is one of few empirical studies regarding the construction of self-image, and experiences of female gamers. It has showed participants have a history as gamers from adolescence, but still face problems derived from the stigmatised internal gender self-image. Externally, female gamer stigmatisation may result in sexism, gender violence, harassment, and objectification. Additionally, females may decide against identifying as gamers, engaging in social gaming interaction, or hold back from online gaming in general, thereby missing out on the opportunities for recreation as well as social and psychological benefits that gaming brings. There is, therefore, urgent need for more research and actions to promote change, equity, education, and security for female gamers as well as their male counterparts. Game developers would benefit from understanding this large gamer demographic better and tailoring games for women specifically.

During the social distancing, an increasing number of people use communication applications, various types of digital tools and programs. Various video conferencing platforms are regularly used in the educational environment. The study presents the analyses how intensive is the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the educational environment and how it can change cognitive-behavioral gender differences. This is particularly important to pay a special attention to the analysis of gender as a dynamic category, to take into account the processes of gender socialization and transformation of gender identification in the changing social environment. The research methods also included a set of additional methods, such as a focus group on different aspects of gender-specific behavior in the digital learning environment, putting together collages, as well as the method of the unfinished sentence related to the impact of ICT on teachers' professional development and well-being. In the course of the study, it was recognised that the design of social models of male and female gender-specific behaviour includes more than the basic gender identity and gender stability: in today's society, there is a multiplicity of views on the similarities and differences of gender-specific behaviours, and a rapid change in the accepted social guidelines and behavioural patterns is in progress, socio-cultural norms that define the psychological characteristics of women and men, their patterns of behaviour.

The term ‘identity’ has come to be associated with our membership of various groups based upon gender, sexuality, race, religion, culture and class. A psychological perspective moves beyond identity politics and emphasises both group and the individual. The selves we become are based upon who we internalise through identification. An aspect of this is our ancestral history. The author uses a personal story to illustrate the dynamic interrelationship between our group and personal identities. Our identities can be a badge of honour or a burden. How we are treated according to the labels applied to us shapes the sense we have of ourselves. Psychological work aims to help a person distinguish between who they truly are and what was forced upon them in the course of their lives. This requires a dual focus on the group legacies we carry and the individual as the unit for understanding identity.

This article proposes to analyse the novels L’Interdite by Malika Mokeddem, Des pierres dans ma poche and L’Envers des autres by Kaouther Adimi from the perspective of presence of exile and expatriation themes and, corollary, of identity construction. By trying to shed light on the different characters, both female and male, and by drawing parallels and comparisons between the two novelists, we will strive to account for the way in which their characters experience both the distance from their country of origin, Algeria, and the difficult return to their roots. The question of identity thus arises twofold: on the one hand, the feeling of a certain extraneity in relation to others, on whichever side of the Mediterranean they may be, and on the other hand, an identity crisis with respect to oneself (one’s body, one’s gender, one’s psychological links with certain social and cultural constructions). These two aspects are not completely dichotomous, but maintain a very close relationship that is not at all unrelated to the characters’ malaise.
