Performative methods are playing an increasingly prominent role in research into historical production processes, materials, bodily knowledge and sensory skills, and in forms of education and public engagement in classrooms and museums. This book offers, for the first time, sustained, interdisciplinary reflections on performative methods, variously known as Reconstruction, Replication and Re-enactment (RRR) practices across the fields of history of science, archaeology, art history, conservation, musicology and anthropology. Each of these fields has distinct histories, approaches, tools and research questions. Researchers in the historical disciplines have used reconstructions to learn about the materials and practices of the past, while anthropologists and ethnographers have more often studied the re-enactments themselves, participating in these performances as engaged observers. In this book, authors bring their experiences of RRR practices within their discipline into conversation with RRR practices in other disciplines, providing a basis for interdisciplinary cross-fertilization.

This chapter provides an overview of the political background that has shaped Emir Kusturica's films. Generationally and critically, Kusturica is the most renowned filmmaker associated both with the old Cold War's divide and its post-1989 aftermath. His work emerged out of a context that proved to be resiliently unlike any other within the Eastern European bloc. As one of few directors capable of thriving before and after 1989 (and between East and West), Kusturica appears to have adjusted his poetic pitch multiple times, just as critics on both sides of the Iron Curtain have felt compelled to reassess their judgment about his work. In reality, the chapter argues that his productions and activities have revolved around a poetic core that, in a dialogue with pressing historical occurrences, has undergone an expansion in terms of public political engagement and intermedial reach without altering itself.

Public knowledge and understanding of health disparities is critical to generate support for programs and policies that address social determinants of health (SDH). Yet, public programs and policies are little informed by evidence or the link between SDH and health outcomes. This case study, using community-based participatory research principles, draws from the evidence of SDH and communication sciences. We describe Project IMPACT, an intervention to build capacity among community-based organizations (CBOs) to engage with media strategically, with the goal of influencing the information environment. The case offers an example of implementation science supporting an evidence-based approach, rather than a specific program or practice. We report how IMPACT leveraged the role community partners play in legitimizing issues so SDH and disparities are part of the public agenda. We assessed how strategic media engagement practices were implemented with the ultimate goal of changing public understanding of SDH and disparities to support SDH-related policies.

Stephanie Springgay’s concept of feltness—which emerges from affect theory, queer and feminist theory, and feminist conceptions of more-than-human entanglements—is a set of intimate practices of creating art based on touch, affect, relationality, love, and responsibility. In this book, she explores how feltness is a radical pedagogy that can be practiced with diverse publics, including children, who are often left out of conversations about who can learn in radical ways. Springgay examines the results of a decade-long project in which researchers, artists, students, and teachers participated in events in North American elementary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions. In projects that ranged from children learning to be critics and artists to university students experimenting with building “a public” through art, participants blended participatory art creation with academic research to address social justice issues. Springgay shows how feltness can redefine who is imagined to be capable of complex feeling, experiential learning, embodied practice, social engagement, and intimate care. In this way, feltness fosters learning that disrupts and defamiliarizes schools and institutions, knowledge systems, values, and the legibility of art and research.

This chapter explores the role of violence in Islam, specifically contrasting Islam in 611 with the Islam associated with terrorism on 9/11. When several tribes attempted to draw from the treaty that bound them to Muhammad, Abu Bakr opposed them in what became known as the Ridda wars. The Ottomans succeeded in invoking Islam, and also the doctrine of jihad. Islam became an explicit ideology and building block of public prestige for the newest Turkish Muslim Empire, and also became an idiom of protest against the gradual contraction of internal and external trade. The association of Osama bin Laden with al-Jazeera proves to be almost as significant as his decision to wage jihad. There are many ways to connect Bin Laden to the early generation of Islam. Bin Laden's legacy is one of deviance and damage rather than persistence and profit in the cause of Islam.

This chapter presents some of the methodological and philosophical challenges faced when conducting public engagement with emerging technologies. The intellectual origins and challenges of conducting upstream public engagement for science communication are discussed, illustrated through the case of nanotechnologies. A series of cross-national workshops held simultaneously in the United States and the UK are described. Findings included that benefits continued to be weighted more heavily than risks in participants’ perceptions of nanotechnologies, as well as did the type of application; that there were more US–UK cross-cultural similarities than differences in the data; the differences that did emerge were both subtle and contextual; and that discourses about social concerns rather than physical risk issues were more salient for participants in both countries. Four methodological challenges for upstream engagement are outlined. We argue that we must also place diverse publics and other concerned stakeholders at the heart of processes of responsible innovation

The Oxford Handbook of the Positive Humanities is the foundational scientific reference for the new and rapidly growing field of the Positive Humanities, an emerging interdisciplinary domain of inquiry and practice focused on the arts and humanities in relation to human flourishing. This Handbook comprises 38 chapters authored by nearly 70 leading experts across a wide range of academic disciplines. The volume begins with an overview of the science and culture of human flourishing, covering historical and current trends in this literature. Next, contributors consider the well-being benefits of engagement with the arts and humanities, identifying neurological, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social pathways to human flourishing. These pathways lead to detailed investigations of individual fields within the arts and humanities, including music, art, theatre, film, literature, philosophy, history, and religion. Along the way, the book synthesizes theory, research, and exemplary practice, concluding with thought-provoking discussions of avenues for public engagement and policy. With its expansive coverage of both the field as a whole and specialized disciplinary and interdisciplinary drivers, this Handbook advances the literature on the theory and science of well-being and extends the scope of the arts and humanities.

The field of neuroethics aims to align neurotechnologies with societal values. To achieve this goal, the field must be responsive to the priorities of diverse publics. Researchers have developed many initiatives aimed at fostering reciprocal and inclusive dialogue between neuroscientists and publics that bring the voices of end-users to the forefront of innovation in the brain sciences. This chapter explores the opportunities and challenges of community engagement in the neurosciences. It draws on the contentious case study of the chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) research trajectory that generated both hope and skepticism, galvanized substantial international attention, and was heavily criticized for privileging scientific inquiry driven more by public pressure than by evidence. It concludes with lessons learned from the cautionary CCSVI tale, and discusses opportunities for reciprocal and impactful engagement that the field of neuroethics may foster as novel neurotechnologies are developed.

Public Engagement helps universities to create new ways of co-producing, accessing, and sharing knowledge. There is, however, no single path to successful engagement with local communities. Time scales, funding, communication skills and equitable power relationships are some of the challenges that these forms of partnerships face. ‘Bringing Dundee Together: an interdisciplinary public engagement hub’ is a pilot project funded by the IIDF to explore how trusting relationships can be built between the University of Dundee academic community and external Dundee-based partners such as community organizations, practitioners, and policy makers. The Hub concept was based on the principle of a ‘University without walls’, a model in which the university is perceived to be part of the community and therefore a place to be accessible for groups from culturally and demographically diverse contexts. The pilot project has developed: 1. An illustrated infographic describing the conditions that will support strong partnerships that improve engagement with local communities experiencing health inequalities; 2. Initial first steps in building a model of collaboration with the community that will gradually build the foundation for an interdisciplinary Public Engagement Hub on health inequalities, and 3. The identification of strategies to build training in engagement for staff and students, and 4. A series of drawing images on the key principles/structure/vision of this Hub

This chapter incorporates a number of global perspectives of pharmacy and public health, including international perspectives (e.g., World Health Organization, macro-level), regional perspectives (e.g., European Union, meso-level), and national (e.g., country, micro-level) perspectives. This chapter provides a broader understanding of how issues in pharmacy and public health are framed and reframed as the field moves from a national understanding of pharmacy and public health to broader regional and global understandings. It also shows show there are significant commonalities and differences in the practice, education, and research in the disciplines and careers of pharmacy and public health. Topics covered include integrated delivery of health care, preventive health services, public–private sector partnerships, global health, public health engagement, public health surveillance, public health practice, and public health systems research.

This chapter explores the hyperrealist, yet eerily distorted, sculptural figures created by Australian artist Ron Mueck. It argues that Mueck’s use of scale to disrupt the impression of perfected reality lures spectators into an illusion which challenges them to question the symbolic system’s guarantee that fiction and reality can be unequivocally adjudicated. An engagement with his work in relationship to other art and media pieces (in particular, the 2007 film Lars and the Real Girl; the stand-up comedy of New Zealand duo Flight of the Conchords; the BBC sitcom Love Soup; and Mark Jenkins’s public art figures) helps point to ways in which realism may contribute to a political aesthetic project.

The field of cultural heritage is no longer solely dependent on the expertise of art and architectural historians, archaeologists, conservators, curators, and site and museum administrators. It has dramatically expanded across disciplinary boundaries and social contexts and now includes vernacular architecture, intangible cultural practices, knowledge, and language, performances, and rituals, as well as cultural landscapes. Heritage has become entangled with the broader social, political, and economic contexts in which heritage is created, managed, transmitted, protected, or destroyed. Heritage protection now encompasses a growing set of methodological approaches whose objectives are not necessarily focused upon the maintenance of material fabric, traditionally cultural heritage’s primary concern. Rather, these objectives have become explicitly social with methods foregrounding public engagement, diverse values, and community-based action. Thus, we introduce the term “public heritage” as a way of bringing together these emerging practices. This handbook charts major sites of convergence between the humanities and the social sciences—where new disciplinary perspectives are being brought to bear on public heritage. This introduction outlines the potential contributions of development studies, political science, anthropology, management studies, human geography, ecology, psychology, sociology, cognitive studies, and education to the field of public heritage.

This book will orient public health scholars and practitioners, as well as professionals from related fields such as the social sciences and design professions, to the tools and skills needed for effective urban health research, including foundational concepts, data sources, strategies for generating evidence, and engagement and dissemination strategies to inform action for urban health. The book brings together what the researchers are learning through ongoing research experience and their efforts to inform action. Chapters also feature brief contributions from other urban health experts and practitioners. The book highlights throughout the public health importance of urban environments and the critical need for diverse interdisciplinary teams and intersectoral collaboration to develop and evaluate approaches to improve health in urban settings. Urban health professionals are often charged with working in ways that take a systems perspective and challenge conventional silos, while also engaging in more traditional public health actions and research strategies. The text is infused with themes emphasizing the importance of place for health, the potential to link evidence with action, and the critical need to attend to health inequities within urban environments. By providing a primer on the range of activities and capacities useful to urban health researchers, the book supports reader in their own professional development and team building by covering a range of relevant skills and voices. The primary audience includes trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels who are interested in creating actionable evidence and in taking evidence-informed action to improve health within urban settings.

This book is based on over 40 years work in public health at a time of unprecedented change and challenge. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of working at different levels of action, very much ‘how to do it and how it was done’. As such it is a personal account. This period marked a new era in which the previous medical paradigm, dating from the mid-nineteenth century, was replaced by a broader, multidisciplinary approach, grounded in social science, the humanities, ecology, and public engagement with the politics of health once more coming into focus. The author uses case studies, storytelling, and real-life experience of establishing a new and revitalized public health system in the North West of England to bring the subject alive for a new generation of students and practitioners. Building on historic insights and timeless lessons from the Victorian and early-twentieth-century pioneers, he traces the evolution of the new thinking and its translation into action. The volume offers a rich menu of examples of responses to an array of new challenges ranging from new infections, such as HIV/AIDS and Ebola, to the lifestyle diseases of the new age, and the application of public health thinking to mental health and the problems of an ageing population. The external threats to health from the environment and as a result of man-made disasters and emergencies are extensively covered. The author brings a fresh approach to public health and the communication of public health issues. This work is accessible and stimulating, speaking to a wide range of audiences and sharing his passion for the subject.

Public trust in civic organizations is low. And many public-serving organizations assume that greater efficiency will build trust. As a result, they are quick to adopt new technologies to enhance what they do. However, efficiency, in the sense of charting a path to a goal with the least amount of friction, can sometimes be at odds with the goal of building trust. This book is about those practices that challenge the normative applications of “smart technologies” in order to build or repair trust with publics. Based on over 60 interviews with change makers in public-serving organizations throughout the United States, as well as detailed case studies, this book provides a practical and deeply philosophical picture of civic life in transition. It is a book about design, but not necessarily about designers. Without coordinating, these civic designers embedded within organizations have adopted an approach to public engagement we call “meaningful inefficiencies,” or the deliberate design of less efficient over more efficient means of achieving some ends. This book illustrates how civic designers are creating meaningful inefficiencies in less than ideal conditions and encourages a rethinking of how innovation within public-serving organizations is understood, applied, and sought after. Different from market innovation, civic innovation is not just about invention and novelty; it is concerned with building communities around novelty, and cultivating deep and persistent trust. It involves a plurality of publics (not just a single public good); it creates the conditions for those publics to play; and it results in people caring for the world.

This chapter reveals that Somali women perform clan in gender-specific ways. Aroosyo (weddings), communitywide events for Somalis, are key sites for legitimizing clan claims and integrating kin through exchange of capital. During these rites of integration, women perform and honor their clans publicly by displaying their clan competence. Because clan is a sensitive if not taboo topic for public discourse, tensions among clans may arise in response to efforts to establish clan hegemony. Sites of integration also become sites of resistance. Some women may use the public event to initiate horizontal links between clans. At the same time, weddings hone a shared sense of being Somali. The chapter also explores spousal preference, marriage taboos, wedding videos, and nikaax (engagement).

This book is an attempt to understand citizen development and engagement. It takes the reader through interpretations of development initiatives at the grassroots and what good governance means to ordinary people. The book unravels the power of citizen engagement through the author's experiences of leading civil society campaigns against corruption and towards strengthening democratic participation of people. It also deals with the philosophical underpinnings of public policies, drawing from the author's on-the-ground experience as well as engagement with those in the higher echelons of policymaking and implementation. The last section of the book provides glimpses into milestones of a development movement; milestones that are responsible for a continued faith in citizen engagement despite the hindering forces.

This book explores youth civic engagement in three global cities in the Americas: Chicago, Mexico City, and Rio de Janeiro. Drawing on interviews conducted by the authors in each of the three cities, the book examines the trajectories of youth activists: what influenced them to step out of their private lives and engage in public battles, how they engage to effectively influence institutions in urban spaces that affect their lives, and what kinds of activities they pursued. It also asks whether young people are given rights in the present, or whether they are only conceived as future citizens. This chapter discusses the changing place of youth in public discourse, along with changes in the nature of the public spaces in which young people engage. It also explains the book's definitions of youth and civic engagement, along with its methodology, and gives an overview of the three global cities.

This edited collection profiles the sites and subjects of arts practices in different geographical contexts, including Hong Kong and mainland China, India and Sri Lanka, Finland, Chile, Brazil, Lebanon, Mexico, the USA, Germany, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. Chapters capture how collective hopes, fears, allegiances, frustrations, and memories, are sung, danced, played, etched on walls, or conveyed through puppets and theatre. Contributors to the volume thus draw attention to some of the diverse ways that groups of people collectively make sense of, re-imagine or seek to change the personal, cultural, social, economic, political, or territorial conditions of their lives, while using the arts as their means and spaces of engagement. Across its chapters, the book explores a number of broad themes and questions. How can we conceptualise the relationship between community development and arts/cultural practice? What diverse forms does this relationship take in contemporary contexts? How do communities of people engage with, utilise, make sense of and through particular artforms and media? How can we understand the aesthetic and associated meanings of such engagements? How are the power dynamics related to authorship, resources, public recognition, and expectations of impact negotiated within community-based arts processes? How do economistic and neoliberal rationalities influence arts processes and programmes in community contexts? Together, the chapters also critically interrogate if, and how, dominant rationalities are being resisted and challenged through arts practices.

These questions have particular resonance in the South African higher education context, which is attempting to tackle the challenges of widening access and improving completion rates in in a system in which the segregations of the apartheid years are still apparent. Higher education is recognised in core legislation as having a distinctive and crucial role in building post-apartheid society. Undergraduate education is seen as central to addressing skills shortages in South Africa. It is also seen to yield significant social returns, including a consistent positive impact on societal institutions and the development of a range of capabilities that have public, as well as private, benefits. This book offers comprehensive contemporary evidence that allows for a fresh engagement with these pressing issues.

Social-issue documentaries are art for civic imagination and social critique. Today, audiences experience documentaries that interrogate topics like sexual assault in the military (The Invisible War), the opioid crisis (Heroin(e)), racial injustice (13th), government surveillance (Citizenfour), animal captivity (Blackfish), and more. Along a continuum of social change, these intimate nonfiction films have changed national conversations, set media agendas, mobilized communities and policymakers, and provided new portals into social problems and lived experiences—accessed by expanding audiences in a transforming dual marketplace that includes mainstream entertainment outlets and grassroots venues. Against the activism backdrop of the participatory networked culture, the contemporary function of social-issue documentaries in civic practice is embodied also in parallel community engagement—the active role of civil society, communities, and individuals—that has dynamically evolved over recent decades. Story Movements: How Documentaries Empower People and Inspire Social Change explores the functions and public influence of social-issue documentary storytelling in the networked era. At the book’s core is an argument about documentary’s vital role in storytelling culture and civic practice with an impulse toward justice and equity. Intimate documentaries illuminate complex realities and stories that disrupt dominant cultural narratives and contribute new ways for publics to contemplate and engage with social challenges. Written by a documentary producer, scholar, and director of the Center for Media & Social Impact, the book features original interviews with award-winning filmmakers and field leaders to reveal the motivations and influence of some of most lauded, eye-opening stories of the evolving documentary age.

Seamus Heaney and Society presents a comprehensive and dynamic new engagement with the work of one of the most celebrated poets of the modern period. In approaching Heaney’s poetry it also recognizes the value of the other roles he took on in the course of his career, notably in education, journalism, and broadcasting, appreciating how his work as a poet was shaped by his work as a teacher, lecturer, critic, and public figure. Mindful of the various spheres of his career it assesses his achievements and status in Ireland, Britain, and the United States. Drawing on a range of archival material, it seeks to revive the network of associations in which Heaney’s work was written, published, and circulated—including newspapers and magazines in London, radio and television programmes in Northern Ireland, and manuscript drafts of key writings now held in the National Library of Ireland. Through asserting the significance of the cultural, institutional, and historical circumstances of Heaney’s writing life, it offers a re-examination of the writer in public, the social lives of the work of art, and the questions of obligation and responsibility which Heaney confronted throughout his career. Throughout, though, its primary concern is with the nature and singularity of poetry, and the ways in which these qualities are asserted, challenged, and sustained in Heaney’s work.

Scientific issues frequently pique the interest of public audiences, and advancements in communication technologies have increased the overall use of technology by citizens, particularly for engaging with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) issues. In a context in which science and media are increasingly coupled, relationships among scientists, media, and publics have come to the fore. As leaders in the scientific community call for greater societal engagement, understanding these relationships becomes more critical. This chapter examines research relevant to reciprocal interactions between scientists and media and synthesizes studies on factors that influence the willingness and ability of scientists to engage with broad audiences. The chapter concludes by situating the discussion in the context of open science, highlighting some implications of this scholarship, and offering directions for future research.

Throughout life, people use film, videos, and media for entertainment and learning. In an increasing number of school, public, and academic libraries, people get opportunities to screen and discuss movies, make short animations, learn to edit videos, and develop a sense of community and civic engagement through shared media experiences. Through innovative programs, services, and collections, libraries are helping people acquire film and media literacy competencies. This book reveals five core practices used by librarians who care about film and media: viewing, creating, learning, collecting, and connecting. With examples from more than 170 school, public, and academic libraries in 15 states, the book shows how film and media literacy education programs and services in libraries advance the lifelong learning competencies of patrons and learners from all walks of life. How does it happen? Film screening and discussion programs deepen people’s appreciation for the art of film. Creating media in libraries advances literacy competencies, builds collaboration skills, and promotes community empowerment. In schools and universities, librarians help people critically analyze moving image media as they learn from it. Librarians make important choices in how they select and access film and media now that streaming media, social media, and other digital technologies are transforming access. Through partnerships, librarians help bring film and media education into communities, aware that opportunities for people to both consume and create moving image media help connect generations, cultures, and communities with important issues and ideas.

Since the mid-2000s, entertainment celebrities have played increasingly prominent roles in the cultural politics of climate change, ranging from high-profile speeches at UN climate conferences, and social media interactions with their fans, to producing and appearing in documentaries about climate change that help give meaning to and communicate this issue to a wider audience. The role afforded to celebrities as climate change communicators is an outcome of a political environment increasingly influenced by public relations and attuned toward the media’s representation of political ideas, policies, and sentiments. Celebrities act as representatives of mass publics, operating within centers of elite political power. At the same time, celebrities represent the environmental concerns of their audiences; that is, they embody the sentiments of their audiences on the political stage. It is in this context that celebrities have gained their authority as political, social, and environmental “experts,” and the political performances of celebrities provide important ways to engage electorates and audiences with climate change action.More recently, celebrities offer novel engagements with climate change that move beyond scientific data and facilitate more emotional and visceral connections with climate change in the public’s everyday lives. Contemporary celebrities, thus, work to shape how audiences and publics ought to feel about climate change in efforts to get them to act or change their behaviors. These “after data” moments are seen very clearly in Leonardo DiCaprio’s documentary Before the Flood. Yet, with celebrities acting as our emotional witnesses, they not only might bring climate change to greater public attention, but they expand their brand through neoliberalism’s penchant for the commoditization of everything including, as here, care and concern for the environment. As celebrities build up their own personal capital as eco-warriors, they create very real value for the “celebrity industrial complex” that lies behind their climate media interventions. Climate change activism is, through climate celebrities, rendered as spectacle, with celebrities acting as environmental and climate pedagogues framing for audiences the emotionalized problems and solutions to global environmental change. Consequently, celebrities politicize emotions in ways that that remain circumscribed by neoliberal solutions and actions that responsibilize audiences and the public.

Within the past decade, the emergence and pervasiveness of mobile technology across all socioeconomic groups in most parts of the world has enabled myriad opportunities to engage trauma survivors in novel approaches to treatment, self-management, and symptom monitoring. While the World Wide Web has continued its explosive growth, the availability of mobile phones has kept pace. These sophisticated devices are always on and always accessible, enabling previously unheard-of opportunities for patient engagement, connection with providers and systems, objective measures of functioning and change, and innovative enhancements to evidence-based treatment tools. The potential for mobile technology to ease delivery of medical care has led to the release of hundreds of thousands of software and hardware applications (“apps”). The National Center for PTSD has been at the forefront of app development for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including PTSD Coach. Various publicly available, free apps are described.

This synthesis chapter recaps the key themes found in Part III of the handbook, which presents several case studies of singular instances of science communication about contentious (or potentially contentious) topics. While the cases are diverse, there are several recurring themes that are summarized in this synthesis. One theme is that public response to science issues is highly dependent on social and political factors and contexts, meaning any issue is not predestined for controversy. A second is that communication about science by authorities or key actors should honor scientific complexity but avoid false assurances. The third theme summarized in this synthesis is how the chapters in this section note the value in accounting for and validating public viewpoints. This summary concludes with suggestions for future research and public engagement activities that constructively capture and analyze public responses to science controversies and debates.

This book provides a longitudinal perspective on change and continuity in voluntary action in recent decades in the UK. Drawing on more than 30 years of different quantitative and qualitative data, its longitudinal, mixed-methods approach offers insights into recent and contemporary British voluntary action. The book deploys a range of quantitative data sources on individual behaviour, both cross-sectional and longitudinal, to analyse aggregate trends in individual engagement in both formal and informal volunteering, in the level and frequency of engagement, the types of activities that volunteers carry out, their responses to questions concerning their motivation and the rewards they obtain from volunteering. These analyses are complemented, and given much greater depth, by the use of qualitative data from individuals who volunteer for the Mass Observation Project, through which they provide free-form written testimony about their daily lives. Tracking a subset of these individuals over time provides unique and novel insights into behaviour, motivation, and lifetime engagement. This source is also highly informative of individuals’ understandings of, and particularly their attitudes towards, voluntary action, and the balance between public and private responsibility for the provision of public services. The findings lead us to caution against any simplistic suggestions that levels of voluntary action can be increased significantly without policies that work with the grain of individuals’ everyday lives.

Health protection encompasses a wide range of professionals, with a complex skill mix, in a wide variety of fields, across all domains of public health, and in every corner of the globe. Contributions to health protection functions and activities are not limited to those who practice health protection professionally. Protecting the nation’s health relies on involvement and meaningful engagement of the general public, professionals, media, politicians, and many other parties. This chapter describes how the health protection functions delivered by specialized professionals are complemented by the roles of other individuals and organizations, from the lowest operator to the highest strategist. It also sets out the different roles of the organizations and staff providing health protection functions for communicable disease control, emergency preparedness, resilience and response (EPRR), and environmental public health in the UK.

Chapter 5 shifts from aesthetics to performativity, even as the two are intertwined. Just as the parties came together at Tuol Sleng in a performance of transitional justice and law, one that seemed to realize the transitional justice imaginary’s aspiration for transformation, so too did the civil parties enter into legal proceedings that had clear performative dimensions, including an ethnodramatic structure that led some to refer to it as “the show.” Indeed, justice itself is a momentary enactment of law, structured by power including legal codes and the force of law, which is plagued by the impossibility of realizing the universal in the particular, a dilemma Derrida has discussed in terms of justice always being something that is “to come.” Other scholarship, ranging from Butler’s ideas about the performativity of gender to Lacan’s theorization of the self, similarly discusses how idealizations break down even as they are performatively asserted with the momentary manifestation of the particular never able to fully accord with idealized aspirations—including those of the transitional justice imaginary and its facadist externalizations. The chapter begins with a discussion of the ways in which Vann Nath’s testimony illustrates the ways the court seeks to performatively assert justice through courtroom rituals, roles, and discourses. The chapter then turns to examine the related work of the court’s “public face,” the Public Affairs Section (PAS), which promoted its success in busing in tens of thousands of Cambodians as evidence of public engagement with the court. The chapter discusses some of the ways in which the head of the PAS, Reach Sambath, who was sometimes referred to as “Spokesperson for the Ghosts,” translated justice when interacting with such Cambodians with many of whom he shared a deep Buddhist belief. I then explore the issues of “Justice Trouble,” or some of the ways in which the instability of the juridical performance at the ECCC broke down, including Theary Seng’s later condemnation of the court.

In a research project by the SI (Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut), which started in 2018, civil society engagement in the context of the refugee crisis was studied with regard to the motives, world views, attitudes, goals and self-conceptions of the people involved. The project’s findings, in conjunction with the results of the ‘Refugee Surveys’ conducted annually since 2015, were presented at a conference and were commented on from the perspectives of engagement, religion, movement and democracy research. The contributions to the conference that are published here provide impetus for answering the question of how this controversy can be taken up in political, public and ecclesiastical discussions.
