Повний текст джерелаThe Standard Model (SM) of particle physics provides the foundational framework describing elementary particles and their interactions. Among its key discoveries was the Higgs boson, observed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012, which completes the SM and explains mass generation via the Higgs mechanism. The top quark, the heaviest known fundamental particle, plays a critical role in vacuum stability and serves as a unique probe for new physics. This thesis presents the first observation of four-top-quark production (̄̄) in proton-proton collisions at √ = 13 TeV using 140 fb⁻¹ of ATLAS data. The measured cross-section, 22.5 +6.6 −5.5 fb, agrees with SM predictions, with an observed (expected) significance of 6.1σ (4.3σ). Enhanced sensitivity stems from improved background modeling, lepton reconstruction, and multivariate techniques. The results constrain effective field theory operators such as the cQt1, ctt1, cQQ1 and cQt8, with limits on their coefficients (Ci/Λ²) ranging from [−1.9, 2.1] to [−6.9, 7.6] TeV⁻². Additionally, a novel measurement of the top quark pole mass is performed using double-differential ̄ cross-sections at NNLO precision with 36 fb⁻¹ of data, targeting a precision of 0.6–1.7%. A study in the appendix demonstrates improved identification of boosted / jets via the Unified Flow Objects (UFO) algorithm. These advancements deepen our understanding of top quark properties, rigorously test the SM, and pave the way for discoveries beyond

Повний текст джерелаDespite its numerous success, like the recent discovery of a boson compatible with the BEH boson, the Standard Model shows some deficiences. Those lead to a search for New Physics, which may take, among others, the form of extra space dimensions. In this thesis, four-top-quarks events arising from a such model, the 2UED /RPP, are searched for. The 2UED /RPP has two universal extra space dimensions compactified under the Real Projective Plane geometry. This search uses a signature with ar least two same-sign leptons (electrons and/or muons). Two successive analyses are presented. The first one uses the first 14,3 fb-1 recorded during 2012 proton-proton collisions occurring with a collision center-of-mass referential energy of 8 TeV. In the case where both extra dimensions have the same compactification radius and where the branching ratio of A(1 ; 1) in tt is 100 %, this analysis puts a lower observed (expected) limit on mKK (main model parameter) at 0,90 TeV (0,92 TeV) with a confidence level of 95 %. The second analysis extend the first one to the full 20,3 fb-1 dataset while refining the procedures in use. An excess of data with a significance of less than 2,5 standard deviations is observed. Non of the cross-checks done shows any default which could explain the excess. The new limit is 0,96 TeV (1,05 TeV). This second analysis also allows to put limits on the model's parameters in other configurations. Finally, this document also presents the author's contribution to the first stages of the LASER II development. The LASER II is the new LASER calibration system of ATLAS's Tile Calorimeter

Повний текст джерелаThis doctoral work was carried out as a member of the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC, an accelerator with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The development of new Micromegas detectors for the NSW project has been studied, along with the search for a very rare physics process : the production of four top quarks at the LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The physics programme of the LHC plans a significant increase of the luminosity in the coming years, especially for the high-luminosity phase beginning in 2026. Some parts of the ATLAS detectors must be upgraded to cope with the increased radiation levels. The small wheels of the muon spectrometer will be replaced by new small wheels (NSW) using Micromegas detectors. IRFU is responsible for producing some of the detectors, which performances are being validated on a test bench using cosmic muons. During this doctoral work, the aim was to develop an analysis code for the test bench data, in order to characterize the Micromegas detectors of the NSW project. The code provides gain and detection efficiency informations, and will be used until the end of the project. The measured efficiencies are in agreement with the expectations except in some parts of the detectors that are being investigated. The top quark plays a central role in many theories beyond the standard model, for instance in models with extra dimensions, or with a modification of the Higgs boson sector. Many of these models predict an enhanced cross section for the very rare four top quark process, which is predicted to be approximately 12 fb at 13 TeV. The study of the four top quark process is particularly interesting in the channel with leptons having the same electric charge because of the very low background level. This doctoral work is firstly carried out on the data taken in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector, in order to study the four top quark process and some new physics models. This process is very challenging given the very low number of events, and the difficult estimation of the fake lepton background. Several limits are set on new physics models and on the standard model four top quark production. The results on the standard model process are combined with the results from the single lepton channel to set the tightest limit at the time of its publication. The four top quark production is being studied again, using the data taken from 2015 to 2018 this time, with the aim of making a first observation of this process. The doctoral work is focused on a new method for estimating the fake lepton background

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis presents two measurements of the top quark using 230 pb-1 of data taken with the D0 detector at the Tevatron accelerator. The first measurement determines the top pair production cross section at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV in proton-antiproton collisions. In the standard model of particle physics the top quark decays almost exclusively into a W boson and a b quark. Candidate events are selected by requiring that at least one jet in the event is tagged with the secondary vertex algorithm. The measured top pair production cross section is:
8.6 +1.6-1.5 (stat. + syst.) +- 0.6 (lumi.) pb.
The second measurement uses the observed and predicted number of events with 0, 1 and 2 b-tagged jets to estimate the ratio R:
R = B(t->Wb) / B(t->Wq)
where q stands for any down-type quark. The measured value is
R = 1.03 +0.19-0.17 (stat. + syst.)
in good agreement with the standard model prediction of R=1. The result can be used to obtain a lower limit for R:
R > 0.61 (95% C.L.).

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis presents studies for the International Linear Collider (ILC),a linear electron-positron collider with a nominal center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV. Data are analysed that were recorded with the physics prototype of the CALICE silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (Si-W ECAL) prototype at FermiLab in 2008. During this thesis, a track-finding algorithm was developed, which finds secondary tracks in hadronic events recorded by the Si-W ECAL physics prototype. This algorithm reveals details of hadronic interactions in the detector volume and the results are compared with simulations based on the geant4 toolkit.Indirect searches of New Physics require a high precision on the measurements of the Standard Model parameters. Many Beyond Standard Model theories, like extradimentional or composite models, imply modifications of electroweak couplings of the heavy quarks, top and bottom. The second part of the thesis is a full simulation study of vertexing algorithms in the ILD environment and the reconstruction of the b-quark charge. The b-quark charge reconstruction is essential for many physics channels at the ILC, particularly, for the e+ e− → bb̄ and the e+ e− → tt̄ channels. The developed algorithm improves the b-quark charge reconstruction performance.The b-quark charge reconstruction methods are applied to the tt̄ production process. This allows to increase statistics for the top quark electroweak form factor estimation w.r.t an earlier study and thus to decrease corresponding statistical uncertainties.The results of the detector study allow for an estimation of the ILC precision on the b-quark electroweak couplings and form factors. The ILC will be able to resolve the LEP anomaly in the bb̄ production process. The ILC precision on the right-handed Z⁰bb̄ coupling, a prime candidate for effects of new physics, is calculated to be at least 5 times better than theLEP experiments

Повний текст джерелаThe essential purpose of the thesis is to measure the top pair cross section in lepton+jets channels in the Atlas experiment at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The analysis is using the proton-proton collision data at 7 TeV collected in 2010 with a luminosity of 33.7 pb-1. The event selection is based on the signature of ttbar topology with 1 electron or muon, large missing transverse energy and at least 4 jets. The QCD multijet background is measured with the data driven “Matrix Method”. Three data driven methods are applied to measure the W+jets background, the charge asymmetry method, the Berends Scaling method and the method combining both. Other backgrounds are estimated from MC.The number of signal ttbar events are obtained by fitting the distribution of the number of b-tagged jet, when the b-tagging efficiency is simultaneously fitted. The ttbar cross section is measured to be 148.1±34.9 pb. It is consistent with the Standard Model prediction at NNLO calculated by Hathor tool. It also agrees with the measurements from other methods. With more collision data in 2011, one can expect a more precise measurement on ttbar cross section

The possibility of violation of flavors in neutral currents occurs through processes like proton/proton into quark top/ antiquark charm. Initially we studied the behavior of jets with high transverse momentum (the order of 300 GeV) and its substructures. After this, we studied the detection of the top quark via HEPTopTagger and Johns Hopkins algorithms (we did a brief comparison between them). Finally, we proposed two ways to find the GKK. One of them, by searching for only quark top. The other, by looking for a quark top and a jet without substructure (algorithm of TJ type). We could see that the possibility of encountering the phenomenon of violation of flavors is accessible (the ratio S/B is the order of 0.1) in both cases of mass analyzed by TJ type algorithm.

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis reports a study of the Higgs boson production in association with top quarks and decaying into τ leptons in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).This work has been carried out in the context of the Run 2 of the LHC, marked by an increase in the center-of-mass energy from 8 to 13 TeV together with an increase in the instantaneous luminosity of the collisions with respect to Run 1. To cope with this new data-taking conditions, CMS had initiated a full upgrade of the Level-1 trigger system achieved by 2016. This new system and in particular the new Level-1 electron and photon algorithm have successfully contributed to a large number of CMS results using Run 2 data. The commissioning of this new system and its performance measured with the first data collected with this new trigger are presented in details.A novel analysis technique based on the Matrix Element Method optimized for the search of the ttH, H->tautau process is also presented, including several generic tools which can be used in a large variety of H->tautau analyses. Results of the CMS analysis using this method based on 35.9 fb-1 collected in 2016 are presented. The background-only hypothesis is disfavored but not yet excluded by this analysis alone

The hypothesis of a fourth generation of fermions – the matter particles described in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics – is one of the simplest model of new physics still not excluded and accessible at the start of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) – the world most powerful hadron collider since 2009. We search for the pair production of up-type t' quarks decaying to a W boson and a b-quark. The search is optimized for the high quark mass regime, for which the production can be distinguished from the top background by exploiting kinematic features of the decay products arising from the proton-proton collisions occurring at the center of the ATLAS detector. We present a novel search strategy reconstructing explicitly very high-pT W bosons from their collimated decay products. The analysis benefits from the commissioning of algorithms intended to identify jets stemming from the fragmentation of b-quarks. These algorithms are based on the precise reconstruction of the trajectory of charged particles, vertices of primary interaction and secondary vertices in jets. The b-tagging ability allows for ATLAS to improve the (re)discovery of the SM, and the sensibility to new physics. It will hence play an important role in the future of the LHC, the reason why we study the expected performance with an upgrade of the ATLAS pixel detector, called IBL and currently under construction. Our search of t' quark, using 4.7 fb^−1 of the 7 TeV data collected in 2011, has resulted in the world most stringent limit, excluding t' masses below 656 GeV, with also an interpretation in the framework of vector-like quarks

Повний текст джерелаThe discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012 confirms the Standard Model as the most successful theory describing the fundamental interactions of elemental particles. One of the important properties of the Higgs boson is its Yukawa coupling to the top quark, which in the Standard Model is the strongest due to the high mass of the quark. This thesis reports on a measurement of the top-Yukawa coupling with data collected by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 at 13 TeV center of mass energy. The coupling is studied in ttH(bb) events, a final state containing decay products of two top quarks with additional emission of a Higgs boson, where the Higgs decays into a pair of bottom quarks. This decay channel of the Higgs Boson has the largest branching ratio, but is systematically limited by the description of the dominant background process ttbb, a tt with additional two b quarks in the final state. The measurement takes advantage of the ability of the ATLAS detector to identify jets coming from a b quarks to construct analysis regions with various compositions of the signal and the background. To further separate the signal, a series of multivariate algorithms is employed and the ttH process is then extracted using a profile likelihood fit. The results are shown for the channel with a single lepton in the final state and for a combination with the dilepton channel. The background performance is studied in detail, where large mis-modeling is found. The measured ratio of the ttH production compared to the Standard Model prediction is found to be mu(ttH) = 0.84 +0.45 -0.39 (syst.) +-0.21 (stat.). The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and corresponds to an observed (expected) significance of 1.9 sigma (2.3 sigma), an improvement compared to the previous ATLAS measurement which reported 1.4 sigma (1.6 sigma).

Повний текст джерелаThe Standard Model of particle physics is very successful in describing elementary particles and their interactions with a great precision. It describes three of the four known fundamental interactions between elementary particles : the weak, the strong and the electromagnetic interactions. The Standard Model also provides an accurate description of the electroweak interactions up to energy scales that have been explored in high energy physics experiments. The interaction and decay of a large number of particles discovered and observed throughout different experiments in the last 50 years are also described. Despite its great success, the Standard Model falls short of being a complete theory of fundamental interactions because it does not incorporate the full theory of gravitation as described by general relativity, or predict the accelerating expansion of the universe (as possibly described by dark energy). The theory does not contain any viable dark matter particle that possesses all of the required properties deduced from observational cosmology. It also does not account for neutrino oscillations (and their non-zero masses). It is thought that new physics should exist leading to new particles and phenomena. The scale at which this new physics should appear is not well known, though several arguments point to the TeV scale and require a very high energy and powerful hadron collider. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the biggest existing particle accelerator and collider. It is designed to provide proton-proton collisions with an unprecedented center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, with instantaneous luminosities up to 10^{34} cm−2s−1

Повний текст джерелаA measurement of s-channel single top-quark production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. The data set has been recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 inverse femtobarn. Collision events are selected so that a subset of the data is obtained where the signal fraction is relatively high. Selected events contain one isolated electron or muon, missing transverse momentum and 2 jets, both of which are induced by b-quarks. All of these objects have large transverse momenta. The resulting set of events is still dominated by background processes, most notably top-quark pair production and the production of W bosons in association with jets. In order to further separate the signal from the backgrounds, several approximate event likelihoods are computed. They are based on different hypotheses regarding the scattering process at hand. Together they result in a function of the measured momenta which allows for the desired separation of the signal process. A statistical model of the corresponding distribution is used in a fit to the measured data. The fit results in a signal significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a total cross section of 5.3^+1.8_-1.6 picobarn. This is the first evidence for s-channel single top-quark production in proton-proton collisions. The results agree with the standard model prediction.

Повний текст джерелаA measurement of the total {\ttb} production cross section in the single lepton channel is presented. The cross section is extracted in a profile likelihood fit of templates constructed from a likelihood classifier using four kinematic variables. For a top quark of mass $m_t=172.5$ GeV, the measured cross section is $178.9 \pm 12$ pb. The measurement agrees within one-standard deviation with the latest theoretical predictions. The cross section measurement is repeated for seven other values of the top quark mass ranging from 140 GeV to 200 GeV to obtain the mass dependence of the experimental cross section. By comparing this with the mass dependence of different higher-order predictions, the top quark mass is extracted. This method allows the determination of two different theoretical mass parameters: the top quark mass in the on-shell scheme $m_t^{\mathrm{pole}}$ and in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme $\overline{m}_t(\overline{m}_t)$. The most precise measurement obtained is $m_t^{\mathrm{pole}} = 171.2\pm 4.5$ GeV, obtained when employing the most precise higher-order calculations in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme. This value agrees within one-standard deviation with the latest Tevatron average of the best top quark mass measurements.

Повний текст джерелаThe top quark polarization in electroweak production for single top t-channel allows to test the structure of the Wtb vertex: the left-handed vector coupling of the Standard Model (SM) as well as the anomalous couplings including the right-handed vector, the left-handed tensor and the right-handed tensor couplings. The 4.7 fb-1 data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with the center of mass energy at 7 TeV in 2011 provides a chance to measure the top polarization. This thesis discusses the measurement of the top polarization by studying the polarized angular distributions in specific bases with t-channel single top events. In the beginning of the thesis, a theoretical context of the top quark production via the strong interaction and the electroweak interaction at the LHC is introduced. Then the detector, the reconstruction performances as well as the event selections with a single top t-channel event signature are described. To measure the top polarization, the unfolding and folding methods are constructed and tested with different configurations. In the end, the measured results are examined with the estimated uncertainties from the theory, the detector response and modeling as well as the statistics. This is the first measurement of the top polarization with the ATLAS detector. The results are compatible with the SM predictions and contribute signicantly to constrain the anomalous couplings in the Wtb vertex

Повний текст джерелаThe top quark is unique among the elementary particles of the Standard Model (SM). Being the heaviest elementary particle, the top quark does not hadronise, which allows to measure directly its mass. The top quark is also the main source of radiative corrections in many perturbative calculations. Precise determination of the top quark mass is important in consistency tests of the SM. Currently, the most precise top quark mass measurements employ "standard" methods, in which the top quark mass distribution is directly reconstructed. The main weakness of these methods is that they largely rely on the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and allow to extract only a "MC top quark mass", which is a parameter of a MC generator. However, the ''alternative'' methods are able to determine a theoretically well-defined top quark mass because they measure observables which can be obtained from theory. This doctoral thesis describes one of the top quark mass alternative measurements, in which for the first time the top quark pole mass is determined by fitting the double differential ttbar cross sections measured at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector to the next-to-next-to-leading order theoretical calculations. The study is in particular focusing on the consistency tests of the analysis procedure. One chapter of this thesis is also devoted to studies related to parton shower variations in the Herwig7 MC generator in the context of ttbar production. This study is motivated by the increasing importance of the parton shower uncertainty in top quark analyses in ATLAS and a need for its more consistent definition. Also, this thesis describes two analyses aiming at better understanding and improving two important uncertainty components of the top quark mass measurements: the colour reconnection uncertainty and the hadronisation uncertainty. The colour reconnection analysis concentrates on the bayesian unfolding of two-dimensional observables, which are sensitive to the colour reconnection models of the Pythia8 MC generator. On the other hand, the hadronisation uncertainty analysis studies how jet recalibration influences the top quark mass hadronisation uncertainty using MC simulated samples

Повний текст джерелаSince the Higgs boson discovery by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN, investigating its properties has been a top priority in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program. The Standard Model of particle physics predicts the interactions of the Higgs boson with other fundamental particles, and these can be measured with exceptional precision using data from LHC Run 2. One of the main challenges of recent years is the measurement of the Yukawa couplings between the Higgs boson and fermions. This coupling could exhibit additional or different interactions with respect to the current Standard Model (SM) theory, especially if CP symmetry (charge and parity conjugation) is violated. This violation is necessary to explain the observed imbalance between matter and antimatter in the Universe. The Yukawa coupling involving the top quark is the highest, and this makes it easier to access it experimentally. The most direct method to measure the Yukawa coupling of the top quark currently involves the production of Higgs bosons associated with top quark pairs (ttH) at the LHC. This thesis presents a series of works in this context. First a phenomenological studies is carried out targeting an enhancement of the simplified template cross section framework for the ttH process to be more CP sensitive. Then a data analysis is presented targeting the ttH process in the multi-lepton final state. The analysis uses data collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analysis measures the effective production cross-section of ttH and the CP structure of the top quark's Yukawa coupling. Both results are consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model. The expected signal rate of 1.19+0.30/-0.30, while the result for the CP structure of the top quark's Yukawa coupling, has as expected CP mixing angle result -39°<α <39°

Повний текст джерелаThe LHC produced proton-proton collisions data with 7 TeV of center of mass energy in 2011 and 8 TeV in 2012 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (respectively) 5 fb^{-1} and 23 fb^{-1}. Data collected by ATLAS have led to a better understanding of the detector, to the evaluation of its performance, to many measurements of physical quantities and the discovery of the \bsc{Higgs} boson. In a context of search for new physics, top quark studies are necessary as it is present in many new physics processes. The top quark mass is an important parameter of both beyond the standard model theories and the standard model itself, thus it must be measured with enough precision to be discriminatory. After a summary of the standard model and the role of the top quark, the first part of this thesis presents the ATLAS detector and focus on its electromagnetic calorimeter for which a study of the calibration constant patching process is detailed. The second part describes top quark physics events measured in ATLAS and their selection. Technical and software tools are presented. The last part presents the measurement method, from the theory to the actual measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton electron-muon channel. This measurement yields a top quark mass of 173{,}65 \pm 0{,}70 \pm 2{,}36 GeV , showing no discrepancy with current worldwide measurements

Повний текст джерелаDuring 2012, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has delivered proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV center of mass energy to the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These two experiments have been designed to discover the Higgs boson and to search for new particles predicted by several theoretical models, as supersymmetry. The Higgs boson has been discovered by ATLAS and CMS experiments on July, 4th of 2012, starting a new era of discoveries in particle physics domain. With the confirmation of the existence of the Higgs boson, searches for new physics involving this boson are of major interest. In particular, data can be used to look for new massive particles that decay into the Higgs boson accompanied with other particles of the standard model. One expected signature is a Higgs boson produced with a top quark, the two heaviest particles in the standard model. The standard model predicts a cross section of top-Higgs production, then any enhancement of their associated production will be a clear signature of physics beyond the standard model. In addition, the existence of physics beyond the standard model can also be reflected by resonances that decay into a top-quark and a Higgs boson. In the first part of my work I describe the theoretical and experimental foundations of the standard model, as well as the experimental device. In the same theoretical chapter, I also discuss the formulation of an extension of the standard model. In addition, I describe a feasibility study of a search of one of the particles predicted by such model. The second part contains the realization of the search for a top partner, T_, within the CMS experiment. This top partner is a new particle very similar to the standard model top quark, but much heavier, that can decay into a top quark and a Higgs boson. The analysis looks for this particle in the full hadronic final state, where the Higgs boson decays into two b-quarks and the top quark decays into three standard model quarks, a b and two light quarks. In this channel, I reconstruct its mass from the identification of all its decay products. As a result of the analysis, I show the limits on the T_ production cross section from the number of observed events in the specific signature

Повний текст джерелаThe top quark mass is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. One of the challenges in the LHC physics case, where the top quark is produced in abundance, is the precise determination of this parameter. Currently, it is measured through the direct reconstruction of all the top quark decay products. The systematic uncertainty on the jet energy calibration and b tagging sensibly limits the precision on this measurement and it is thus vital to develop alternative measurements. A very promising possibility – never exploited until now – is the study of top pair decays, where one of the two quarks decays in the leptonic channel with a J/psi created in the b quark fragmentation. The top quark mass is extracted through its correlation to the invariant mass of the J/psi-charged lepton combination. This method presents the advantages of using charged leptons only, whose energy momentum is measured with great accuracy in the CMS detector

Повний текст джерелаThis manuscript describes my thesis work within the CMS experiment ofthe LHC collider. It presents both subjects on which I worked : a detectorsubject and a data analysis subject. The first subject, detector, is situated within the framework of the HL-LHCproject which plans an increase by a factor five the instantaneous luminosity.Such an increase and the preservation of the high level trigger (HLT)system, generate new constraints on the CMS detector. This is particularly true for the electronic trigger (L1) system. The CMS collaboration intends to implant this within tracker detector. Two methods are proposed : the stubmodules method and the associative memorie method. However, associativememorie method require a clever preselection of electric signals to be usable.The cluster width method is jointly proposed by Fabrizio Palla’s team (Pisa) and by Didier Contardo’s team (IPNL) to preselecte electric signals. The optimization of this method, in particular geometrical parameters of modules and thresholds applied for the electric signals preselection, is the result of myown work. It is detailed throughout the part III of this manuscript. The second subject concerns the analysis of data collected by CMS during 2011. This analysis has for objective to look for new particles in the spectreof anti-top top invariant mass. Due to its big mass, close to the electroweak symmetry breaking energy, the top quark plays a important role in numerous extensions of the Standard Model. The observation of narrow resonances in the spectre could be the sign of new particles. The analysis is subdivided into three parts, the selection of top anti-top events, the reconstruction of top anti top invariant mass and a statistical study to quantify the presence of new physics. The results of this work are limits on the cross-section productionof new particles. They are presented in the part IV of this manuscript

Повний текст джерелаThe work presented in this thesis lies within the scope of the measurement of the top quark pair production cross-section in the fully hadronic channel at a centre of mass energy of 8 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. After introducing the theoretical context of the Standard Model and the physics of the top quark, a description of the ATLAS detector design and of the event reconstruction is given. The first analysis presented focuses on the electromagnetic calorimeter performances, by studying in details the influence of the high voltage variations on the energy scale and resolution, using Z ee events selected from the 4. 5 fb-1 of 7 TeV data collected in 2011. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to jet performance studies. After reviewing the jet calibration procedure, measurements of the energy scale and of the resolution realized using a direct balance technique on Z+jet events selected from the 20. 3 fb-1 of 8 TeV data collected in 2012, are presented. The results of these performance studies are used in the last part of this thesis, which is dedicated to the tt cross-section measurement on the full 2012 dataset. The presented analysis uses an analytical x2 method to reconstruct the tt final state and a so-called "ABCD" method to estimate the background contribution in the selected signal region. The cross-section is measured with a 19% uncertainty and is compatible with Standard Model expectations
