Abstract Terrestrial gamma radiation arises from the decay of naturally occurring radionuclides, known as primordial radionuclides. The radiological hazard associated with these radionuclides can be quantified using radiological hazard indices. This study aims to (1) determine the average Terrestrial Gamma Radiation Dose (TGRD) rate at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), (2) assess the average concentrations of radionuclides 238U, 232Th, and 40K in UTM soil, and (3) evaluate the corresponding radiological hazard indices. The mean TGRD rate, measured at 30 locations across UTM, was 100.11 ± 16

Building materials comprise a diverse range of natural rocks that contain varying mineral components including radionuclides. Gamma spectrometry-based high-purity Germanium detectors were utilized to measure the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides: Radium-226 (226Ra), Thorium-232 (232Th), and Potassium-40 (40K) in various building rock samples found within and surrounding Taiz city. This research reports an assessment of ionizing radiation in some chosen Dumpsites in Lafia Local government area of Nasarawa State. Ionizing radiation measurement was conducted at four Dump sites. The survey was done using a radiation survey meter (Radex one Outdoor 55130719 NA). Radiation exposure rate in micro sievert per hour (μSvhr-1) was measured. Readings were taken by placing the detector at gonad level about 1 meter above the ground. Result showed that the average annual effective dose rate in the selected dumpsites were 0.22 mSv/yr for Lafia modern market, 0.17 mSv/yr for dumpsite op

Abstract The isotope activity concentration of rocks and bottom sediments was evaluated based on the samples collected from sedimentation ponds and gangue repositories. Radium 226Ra, thorium 228Th and potassium 40K activities were measured by gamma spectrometry using high-purity germanium detector – HPGe 4020. The radiation effect resulting from the presence of natural radionuclides was estimated by radiological hazard indices such as f1 and f2 coefficients, radium equivalent, internal and external hazard indices and absorbed dose rate. The presence of heavy radioactive minerals in the studied granitoids from which the Wadi sediments leads to the study of the exposure to emitted gamma rays from the terrestrial radionuclides, such as 238U, 232Th, and 40K. Naturally occurring radionuclides can be a health hazard due to their inequal distribution in the earth’s crust. Beach sand is not only valuable as a potential recreational area, with the Binh Thuan coast being a popular tourist destination, it can also be a valuable mineral deposit (for example zircon near Ham Tan) or an important raw resource for building material. To assure public safety, the assessment of natural radionuclides can be a necessary precaution, for example Guarapari or Kerala has significant natural radionuclide concentrations in monazite sand. Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO in 2012 emphasized the vital importance of prioritizing prevention and preparedness in public health, stating that risk management is a fundamental responsibility. The diverse threats to global public health include communicable disease outbreaks, conflicts, exposure to radiation and chemical hazards, natural and technological disasters, and the health impacts of climate change and contamination of food and water. To effectively tackle these challenges, countries must prioritize prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, enhancing their capabil

Abstract Natural gas pipelines are essential for energy, but their failures can result in severe consequences. Egypt has established measures that include location classification for pipeline safety design and operation. Additionally, safe separation distances from communities are defined based on risk assessment principles. Nonetheless, a standardized method for determining these distances is lacking. This research introduces a methodology employing PHAST consequence modelling to ascertain safe separation distances, replacing the Fixed Distance/Rule-Based approach. Event Tree Analysis evaluat

Operators of longwall mining systems experience sound levels of 93–105 dB(A) and receive noise exposures that place them at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. To address the problem, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH*) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has conducted research to develop engineering noise controls for longwall systems. In previous field surveys, the sound radiated by the cutting drums was identified as a major hazard, especially considering their close proximity to the operators.
