Abstract Terrestrial gamma radiation arises from the decay of naturally occurring radionuclides, known as primordial radionuclides. The radiological hazard associated with these radionuclides can be quantified using radiological hazard indices. This study aims to (1) determine the average Terrestrial Gamma Radiation Dose (TGRD) rate at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), (2) assess the average concentrations of radionuclides 238U, 232Th, and 40K in UTM soil, and (3) evaluate the corresponding radiological hazard indices. The mean TGRD rate, measured at 30 locations across UTM, was 100.11 ± 16

Gamma-ray spectrometry NaI(Tl) was used to measure the radiation hazard in ten samples collected from the Iraqi market. The corresponding radiation dose quantities and hazard indices were also calculated. The average concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were found to be 18.195, 20.965, and 796.500 (Bq.kg-1). Soil can pose significant radiation hazard in areas with elevated radioactivity levels from geological or anthropogenic sources, potentially contributing to human exposure through the food chain and atmosphere. However, industrial activities can alter radionuclides distribution by releasing residues or effluents, leading to their accumulation in the environment. In general, soil provides clear insights into geological characteristics and heavy metal exploration, in addition to assessing the risks of radiation exposure. Interest for the determination of naturally occurring radiation and environmental radioactivity has led to the interest of extensive surveys in many countries including Nigeria. This work was carried out to ascertain the indoor and outdoor background ionizing radiation in Gombe state as a precautionary measure due to recent development of radioactive activities in the State. RDS-31 Survey meter placed 1m above the earth surface was used for taking readings. The measured average exposure rates ranged from 0.007 to 0.017 mR/h for indoor and 0.007 to 0.015 mR/h for outdoor with a total mean of 0.

The area Huambo shows elevated 226Ra and 232Th values which can be explained by its older geological formations. 40K concentrations are low in general. Regarding external radiation risk, adobe
