Aim: To improve the learning environment of medical institutions, this study was conducted to estimate the undergraduate medical student’s perception of the academic learning environment at their institutions. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, analytical, survey-based, multi-centric study among undergraduate medical students from three different medical colleges in Western Uttar Pradesh, India. The data was collected with an online survey including socio-demographic questions and the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure Inventory. Results: A total of 283 medical students participated. The total Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure Inventory score was 125.22, whereas in 5 domains of the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure Inventory were students’ perception of learning with a score of 29.18, students’ perception of teachers with a score of 27.18, students’ academic self-perception with a score of 19.11, students’ perception of atmosphere with a score of 30.25, and students’ social self-perception with a score of 18.87 respectively. Conclusion: The mean total Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure Inventory score was 125.22 indicative of "a more positive than negative perception". This indicates there is potential scope for excellence in the learning environment by medical institutions through regular evaluation and corrections.
Today, we are familiar with two techniques of creation and clothing design: tailor-made and ready-to-wear. These are usually considered as opposites. If we compare the two models of clothing design, we come to the conclusion that: with ready-to-wear, the individual must belong to a size and adapt to it, whereas in custom-made clothing, the object is adapted to the person. This research aims to study these different approaches in order to converge them towards new systems of creation and production of clothing that take the form of a new paradigm: “ready-to-measure”. In ready-to-wear design, clothing can be considered as a consumable product, whereas with custom-made clothing, it acquires a special status because of its relationship with the hand of the person who designed/manufactured it. “Ready-to-measure” seeks this status of clothing object in connection with the body of the one who wears it. With the paradigm of the ready-to-measure, the advantages of both approaches are reconciled: the speed of obtaining ready-to-wear garments and the unique and specific character of tailor-made clothing. I work with a research by practice approach and research by design approach. Action research claims results related to practice, in this case the crafting of clothing, but also research results, which are discussed and positioned in disciplinary fields, specifying certain zones of ignorance, often at the boundaries of each of the scientific disciplines that identify our subject of creation/ conception and clothing production. The fashion system culminating in Fast Fashion defines the context in which this research was carried out and from which three main forms of experimentation are deployed: “Tricotissage” (knitting-weaving), Connected accessories such as EEGs and Clothing collections “Lignes noires”. Thus qualified research “through practice” includes the ready-to-measure creation and production project and its share of actions and results, such as the “knitting-weaving table” (a real creative tool and production machine), know-how and expertise, from which questions are born that lead in their studies to new interdisciplinary knowledge that makes old practices and those we have proposed in the new ready-to-measure paradigm understandable

A diagnosis of cancer may evoke concerns relating to life’s meaning and ultimate purpose that by consensus understanding are considered “spiritual.” In addressing these, oncologists face three tasks: to acknowledge spiritual questions, to recognize spiritual concerns, and to engage with patients about spiritual issues in a supportive way. Some Americans turn to religion to answer spiritual questions, but others are religiously unaffiliated and consider themselves “spiritual but not religious.” Patient spirituality resists ready transformation into quantitative measures. Still, investigators have devised validated instruments that measure spiritual well-being and spiritual needs. Patients’ underlying spiritual belief system and spiritual support network may influence decisions about cancer treatment. Spiritual needs are common among patients with cancer and may affect satisfaction with care. Additional research into how best to measure patient spirituality and to train physicians and nurses to identify and meet patient spiritual needs may improve the overall quality of oncology care.

The face of the workforce is rapidly changing. Technological advances mean that jobs previously serving as major drivers of the world’s economy are now fully automated. Furthermore, the automatization of many common work activities means that those currently entering the workforce require a different set of skills than those entering the workforce of the 20th century. As such, there is a need to redefine what it means to be “ready to work.” This has led to a major reboot, with new research, applied, and policy questions: How do we define and measure work readiness? How should we prepare students for the workforce? And how can we bridge gaps between college and workforce readiness? A key to reconsidering workforce readiness is placing greater emphasis on measuring and developing noncognitive or “21st century” skills, such as teamwork, creativity, and persistence, and focusing more attention on fostering activities that engage, prepare, and advance students for the future. This volume brings together some of the world’s cutting-edge workforce readiness researchers from the fields of industrial/organizational, educational, and personality psychology to tackle these disparate issues. It concludes with a summary of what has been learned and a set of recommendations for educators, researchers, and policymakers to move the field forward. These recommendations represent a crucial first step to “building better students,” who will truly be ready to work.

This book introduces to the theory of probabilities from the beginning. Assuming that the reader possesses the normal mathematical level acquired at the end of the secondary school, we aim to equip him with a solid basis in probability theory. The theory is preceded by a general chapter on counting methods. Then, the theory of probabilities is presented in a discrete framework. Two objectives are sought. The first is to give the reader the ability to solve a large number of problems related to probability theory, including application problems in a variety of disciplines. The second is to prepare the reader before he takes course on the mathematical foundations of probability theory. In this later book, the reader will concentrate more on mathematical concepts, while in the present text, experimental frameworks are mostly found. If both objectives are met, the reader will have already acquired a definitive experience in problem-solving ability with the tools of probability theory and at the same time he is ready to move on to a theoretical course on probability theory based on the theory of Measure and Integration. The book ends with a chapter that allows the reader to begin an intermediate course in mathematical statistics.

Co-curricular experiences should be warranted a fair amount of attention in higher education, particularly for their ability to help students develop real-world employability skills and a platform for them to critically reflect upon and expand their perspectives. These are crucial in developing the future-ready graduate – the type of graduate the Singapore Management University (SMU) strives to nurture. Yet, the authors have discovered that many students go from one activity to another without understanding what they can actually be getting out of these activities and how each activity connects to life after university. This has led the authors to seek to address the problem: “How might we rethink the purpose and delivery of co-curricular learning?” As part of the design thinking odyssey, this chapter details the prototype SMU has embarked on to measure and document students' learning in the co-curricular space.

This paper explores applying qualitative reasoning to a driver’s mental state in real driving situations so as to develop a working load for intelligent transportation systems. The authors identify the cognitive state that determines whether a driver will be ready to operate a device in car navigation. In order to identify the driver’s cognitive state, the authors will measure eye movements during car-driving situations. Data can be acquired for the various actions of a car driver, in particular braking, acceleration, and steering angles from the experiment car. The authors constructed a driver cognitive mental load using the framework of qualitative reasoning. The response of the model was checked by qualitative simulation. The authors also verified the model using real data collected by driving an actual car. The results indicated that the model could represent the change in the cognitive mental load based on measurable data. This means that the framework of this paper will be useful for designing user interfaces for next-generation systems that actively employ user situations.

The effectiveness of technology to support learning and the value of technology-mediated instruction are critical factors in determining the quality of educator preparation programs. A widely utilized, national measure of teacher readiness and preparation in the USA, edTPA, reports program completers' knowledge and skills in content-specific instructional planning and learner asset differentiation; pedagogical delivery and student engagement; and measures of learning and evaluative feedback to support individual student educational growth. This study leverages these performance scores to measure the equivalency of online teacher candidates' learning outcomes as compared to candidates completing traditional in-person [face-to-face (F2F)] programs. Results suggest candidates who completed the online pathway to teacher licensure were more classroom-ready. Findings challenge notions that traditional methods of teacher preparation are more effective pathways to becoming a teacher and suggest attributes of online learning may be linked to differences in candidate knowledge and skill preparation when equitable curricular opportunities are provided. In light of the global pandemic, the outcomes of this study offer support for the rising need for educators to adapt to the new reality of teaching and learning through technology.

So far, you have read about the tools you will use on the job, a little bit of theory about how online teaching is supposed to operate, and the role of the facilitator/teacher. Another part of implementing an online curriculum is critically evaluating work tasks using these tools and planning how you want to approach online education. You evaluate how well your experience with online courses matches the expected outcomes for learners who take that course. At the completion of your course, are learners ready for the next part of the curriculum? Do you think that students were prepared to take your course—both in their knowledge of the discipline and their ability to complete course objectives online? Your daily work is a good measure of the curriculum’s strengths and weaknesses.

This chapter explores how the International Relations (IR) literature on alignments can help understand the case of China–Russia relations and how, in turn, the study of China–Russia relations can enrich the theoretical knowledge about alignments. The existing studies of China–Russia relations have failed to develop a theory-grounded system of indicators to measure China–Russia alignment. In turn, the IR literature does not have a ready-made, indicators-based taxonomy of alignments that could be applied to the China–Russia case. In this context, this chapter places a particular emphasis on the importance of theory for the comprehensive and systematic understanding of China–Russia alignment. It also presents the book structure, methodology, and research design that redefine China–Russia relations in theory-informed terms of strategic alignment and reconnect it with theoretical IR.

Quarantine was a forced measure that prevented significant losses in the early stages of the disease and prepared the medical system to combat COVID-19. Today, the medical system in most regions is ready to provide treatment for all patients in the event of new possible outbreaks of the pandemic. An integrated approach has been taken to develop measures to overcome the effects of COVID-19 and stimulate the economy. This chapter is devoted to the problems of agriculture that have arisen as a result of quarantine measures. Its main task is to find out whether the measures to counter the COVID-19 pandemic have affected the agricultural sector of the economy. The situation in the Ukrainian agrarian sector during the experience of counteracting COVID-19 is considered. The novelty of the chapter is the exchange of scientific information with colleagues from other countries for seeking further solutions to the problems caused by COVID-19. The global challenges have been quite devastating for the Ukrainian agriculture economy.

Indonesia is currently experiencing a demographic dividend, where the total population of productive age is higher than the total of un-productive age. The most numerous groups in this productive age group are the millennials aged 20 to 40 years, which required them to have sufficient knowledge of Islamic financial literacy. Therefore, this study aims to measure the level of Islamic financial literacy of millennials in Aceh, Indonesia and to investigate its effects on managing cash and debt. The influence of demographic factors is also examined in this study namely gender, age, educational background, and income level. By using multiple linear regression analysis, the result shows that the level of Islamic financial literacy, educational background, and income level significantly affects cash and debt management. The results of this study can be references for the Islamic financial industry in Aceh and for its government. The millennial seems to be ready for the new provisions that will be implemented in relation to the Islamic financial industry in Aceh.

All sites should be ready to enroll by the planned study start date. Realistically, this can only be achieved if the process is initiated 52 weeks before the planned start date. The components of each step and the associated timelines are described below. There may be considerable overlap of these steps, and the time needed to complete each one can vary greatly from project to project or study to study. This chapter gives an overview of the key activities and their timelines; details of how the activities are carried out are described in subsequent chapters. As always, these are guidelines, and flexibility is the key. Timelines are defined by the activities that need to be carried out and the time each activity will take. Some of these activities are necessarily sequential, as the next activity cannot start until the previous one has been completed. Some of these rate-limiting activities are defined as milestones, and time to their successful completion is used as a relative measure of efficiency. Metrics have a valuable role to play in process improvement, but a potential drawback is that people will concentrate disproportionately more effort on achieving what they know is being measured, sometimes to the neglect of other activities. It is therefore essential that what is being measured be a true and important measure of efficiency. One of the most popular metrics to measure the efficiency of the clinical trial startup process is how short the time is between availability of the final protocol and when the first patient is randomized, the shorter the better. This metric, so often quoted, is the most useless and misleading because the completion of the study depends not on when the first patient was randomized but on when the last patient was randomized. The mad rush to enter the first patient is therefore a futile endeavor unless everything is in place to ensure that all, or most, sites can start randomizing patients by the planned start date.

Researchers have historically focused on characterizing vocabulary development in infants and toddlers. However, less is known about the vocabulary composition of children entering formal schooling. The authors propose that a critical next step in understanding school readiness is to characterize the academic vocabulary of children entering kindergarten. These assessments should identify knowledge of words used in general academic discourse and specific domains (e.g., science). This chapter outlines initial steps taken by the authors to identify children's science vocabulary around the age of school entry. Furthermore, the complexity of vocabulary assessment is illustrated via a discussion of vocabulary development in dual-language learners. Understanding the words that children can produce at various stages of development will help determine whether children are ready for school and inform interventions that target word knowledge. Indeed, focusing on children's vocabulary presents an exciting new opportunity to integrate developmental science with real-world educational settings.

The conceptual design of compliant mechanisms is generally performed using one of two methods: topology optimization or the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model. In this paper, we present a conceptual design methodology which utilizes a building block approach. The concept of the instant center is developed for compliant mechanisms and is used to characterize the building blocks. The building block characterization is used in guiding the problem decomposition. The compliant four-bar building block is presented as a base mechanism for the conceptual design. The geometric advantage is used as a quantitative measure to guide the designer in determining the shape of the building block. An example problem demonstrates the methodology’s capacity to obtain viable conceptual designs in a straightforward manner. Resulting mechanisms satisfy initial kinematic requirements and are ready for further refinement using size and geometry optimization.

Radar satellite interferometry (InSAR) is a non-invasive surveying technique based on the exploitation of SAR images, able to measure millimetric motion of terrain structures over wide areas in both urban and non-urban environments. Sixense processing chain, ATLAS, has been successfully used to detect and monitor ground motion in many different projects, cities and sectors to follow subsidence, heave, building stability and landslides amongst others. ATLAS reaches high density of measurement points, and covers large areas with high-resolution imagery, and weekly revisits. This presents a huge opportunity for the monitoring and management of infrastructures. However, the unprecedent spatial and temporal volume of InSAR measurements- which are only going to increase with new sensors to come- presents a challenge. Thus, ATLAS is in continuous development to efficiently extract characterized information of maximum benefit to end users by implementing different algorithms and AI methodologies over InSAR Big Data results to provide ready-to-use, actionable information.

The push to advance the performance and longevity of gas turbine engines requires better characterization of flow instabilities within the compressor and most importantly the combustor. Detecting the earliest onset of these flow instabilities can help engineers either manipulate the flow to restabilize it or make informed design changes to the engine. The pressures within gas turbine engines are typically composed of an undesired, low-level oscillatory pressure of less than 1kPa to several kPa superimposed on top of a large, relatively constant pressure of several thousand kPa [1–7]. The high-pressure transducers used to measure the pressures within these environments are often unable to resolve these low-level oscillatory pressures that characterize the flow instabilities because the signal output for such pressures is often the same level as the noise within the sensor-data acquisition system. This paper presents an engine test ready, high temperature, combined static and dynamic pressure transducer that uses static pressure compensation in order to measure these low-level dynamic pressures with an excellent signal to noise ratio and, at the same time, captures the overall static pressure within a gas turbine [8–10]. Test bench experiments demonstrate the static-dynamic transducer’s unique ability to capture both large static or quasi-static pressures of 1,380kPa or greater and simultaneously measure the acoustic-level dynamic pressures superimposed on top of these pressures. The static-dynamic transducer achieves this advanced sensitivity through the use of a low-pass acoustic filter that passes the large static pressure to the reference port of a high sensitivity dynamic pressure sensor within the transducer such that the overall static pressures cancel out and the sensor measures all acoustic-level dynamic pressures. These bench tests additionally demonstrate the transducer’s ability to operate reliably when exposed to the harsh, high temperature environment (up to 500°C) within a gas turbine [8–10].

Electromyography (EMG) is one of the methods used to measure the muscular activity, it can be done via external electrodes or using needles. Nowadays the EMG is used in many areas as medicine, physiotherapy, odontology, phonoaudiology and even to create prosthetic limbs. This technology is used by physiotherapists to evaluate the activity of specific muscles. A specific example is the evaluation of muscles on the Pelvic Floor, field covering the evaluation and treatment of this set of muscles. Most of these evaluation techniques require that the patient be on still positions, since the measurement device is physically wired to the data analysis system. To mitigate this problem our work shows the development of a Wearable Pelvic Floor EMG evaluation system that transmits the data wirelessly to the data analysis system, allowing the patient to be evaluated in more natural positions such as running, crouching and others. This paper covers the development process of the device and dada analysis software, resulting in a system that is ready to clinical tests by the end of the year.

An extensive study to improve flow uniformity and periodicity in the NASA Transonic Flutter Cascade is presented here. The results are reported in two independent parts dealing with the experimental approach and the analytical approach. The first part, the Experimental Study, focuses first on the data sets acquired in this facility in the past and explains several discrepancies, particularly the questions of actual flow incidence and cascade backpressure levels. Next, available means for control and modifications of the cascade flowfield, boundary layer bleed and tailboard settings are presented in detail. This is followed by experimental data sets acquired in modified test facility configurations that were based on analytical predictions of the cascade flowfield. Finally, several important conclusions about improving the cascade flowfield uniformity and blade load periodicity are summarized. The most important conclusions are: (1) boundary layer bleed system does not improve the cascade flow periodicity; (2) carefully match the tunnel wall contours to the expected shape of cascade streamlines; (3) measure actual flow incidence for each cascade configuration rather than rely on the tunnel geometry; and (4) the current cascade configuration exhibits a very high blade load uniformity over six blades from blade #2 to blade #7, and the facility is now ready for unsteady pressure data acquisition.

Bearing steel cleanliness is directly linked to failures caused by the interaction of subsurface defects and rolling contact fatigue (RCF). Optical analysis of as-received steel coupled with ultrasonic inspection on finished components minimizes the occurrence of defects in the near race. While useful as a preventative measure, these methods do not ensure that critical areas of components subjected to RCF are free of defects that act as stress concentrators and contribute to premature failure. This presentation provides a brief summary of the current technology and standards utilized in the industry. The deficiencies of the current methods for the particular case at hand are identified and a surface wave scanning method is introduced. The development and production of reference parts for this type of scanning are then discussed. The production method entails both traditional electro-discharge machining (EDM) and femtosecond laser machining (FLM) on finished bearing components such that the reference part microstructure resembles that of a finished part. Experimental results utilizing surface wave scanning are given for two types of assembly-ready bearing components that are then subjected to realistic service loads and mileage to the point of failure. The results of the service life simulations are then correlated with surface wave scanning results and are shown to be in good agreement. This work is anticipated to impact any field in which components are subjected to RCF.

This paper examines the feasibility and limitations of Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer (FLIR) Aerial Technology for detecting fouled ballast. The method is intended to provide an efficient and ready-to-use approach that can help the railroads detect fouled ballast in their early stages. Ballast fouling commonly occurs as a result of fine particles clogging off water passage through them. Subsequently, this results in trapped water that often results in poor foundation strength, rotting of the ties, and other ill effects. This study includes a novel approach to evaluate the railway ballast fouling by using thermal imaging techniques. In particular, the thermal characteristics of clean and fouled ballast are studied using FLIR cameras that can be used onboard rolling stock, Hyrail trucks, or drones. Laboratory tests are primarily performed to measure the surface temperature changing rate of clean and fouled ballast in response to ambient temperature changes. For the purpose of laboratory testing, the camera is set up in stationary and moving configurations. The test results indicate that clean and fouled ballast have different thermal characteristics. In particular, different thermal patterns are obtained during naturally-occurring daily temperature change. The test results also indicate that the FLIR cameras can be used on a moving platform for quick scanning of thermal images of the ballast that could be used for assessing the early stage of fouling.

The 4th Industrial Revolution is here and companies have to face new challenges. The technological fusion among the layers physical, chemical, biological and digital offers great opportunities and, at the same time, imposes serious challenges to companies and society. Cyber Physical Systems, Internet of Things Artificial Intelligence and Computing in the Cloud are here, but how to use them in a company or a city is not a straightforward path, nor is it the way to choose technologies and master them. This paper presents a methodology used by the National Center of Metrology in Mexico to approach this issue and help companies, mainly SMEs, to find their way into I 4.0 through metrology 4.0. Sometimes it is believed that companies 4.0 have to be born like that. It is true that companies that are designed by origin 4.0 would be best examples of this integration of technologies. However, the author believes that movement towards 4.0 is also a process of evolution and that we have a lot to learn. The methodology starts by analyzing the relevant flows of information that go in four layers of the company: 1) Production line: Physical or chemical processes with relevant input-process-output variables and transfer functions determined within certain tolerances. 2) Measurement layer: Network of sensors that measure and determine the values of variables or parameters that affect the process, with their due uncertainties. 3) Key Process Indicators: Set of parameters needed by the manufacturing manager or similar to monitor the operations of the production lines and optimize them. 4) Strategic and Financial Indicators: Set of variables needed by the top management to evaluate the whole performance of the company and take decisions, communications in-out side and integration with the whole environment. All these layers must be interconnected by appropriate software with some of AI to help every actor in the company to have the right information in real time and in a proper format ready for use. The methodology starts from the measurement layer, but connects both ways to make metrology a most powerful tool for industry 4.0.

The next generation of Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) are currently being developed to meet the increasing demands of high-powered semiconductor devices. In particular, a variety of nanostructured materials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are interesting due to their ability to provide low resistance heat transport from device to spreader and compliance between materials with dissimilar coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs). As a result, nano-Thermal Interface Materials (nTIMs) have been conceived and studied in recent years, but few application-ready configurations have been produced and tested. Over the past year, we have undertaken major efforts to develop functional nTIMs based on short, vertically-aligned CNTs grown on both sides of a thin interposer foil and interfaced with substrate materials via metallic bonding. A high-precision 1-D steady-state test facility has been utilized to measure the performance of nTIM samples, and more importantly, to correlate performance to the controllable parameters. Nearly 200 samples have been tested utilizing myriad permutations of such parameters, contributing to a deeper understanding and optimization of CNT growth characteristics and application processing conditions. In addition, we have catalogued thermal resistance results from a variety of commercially-available, high-performance thermal pads and greases. In this paper, we describe our material structures and the parameters that have been investigated in their design. We report these nTIM thermal performance results, which include a best to-date thermal interface resistance measurement of 3.5 mm2-K/W, independent of applied pressure. This value is significantly better than all commercial materials we tested and compares favorably with the best results reported for CNT-based nTIMs in an application-representative setting.
