Genetically informed accounts of difference risk reinforcing essentialist understandings of identity; yet they can also serve to undermine notions of racial or ethnic purity, highlighting instead the inextricable mixedness of all human populations and the genetic uniqueness of every individual. The chapter traces developments in biomedical research, forensics, genetic genealogy, and identity politics, and it concludes by outlining a constructivist response to the new objectivist and naturalist accounts of race and ethnicity.

In the twenty-first century, the Indo-Pacific region has become the new centre of the world. The concept of the ‘Indo-Pacific’’, though still under construction, is a potentially pivotal site, where various institutions and intellectuals of statecraft are seeking common ground on which to anchor new regional coalitions, alliances, and allies to better serve their respective national agendas. This book explores the Indo-Pacific as an ambiguous and hotly contested regional security construction. It critically examines the major drivers behind the revival of classical geopolitical concepts and their deployment through different national lenses. The book also analyses the presence of India and the US in the Indo-Pacific, and the manner in which China has reacted to their positions in the Indo-Pacific to date. It suggests that national constructions of the Indo-Pacific region are more informed by domestic political realities, anti-Chinese bigotries, distinctive properties of twenty-first century US hegemony, and narrow nation-statist sentiments rather than genuine pan-regional aspirations. The book argues that the spouting of contested depictions of the Indo-Pacific region depend on the fixed geostrategic lenses of nation-states, but what is also important is the re-emergence of older ideas—a classical conceptual revival—based on early to mid-twentieth century geopolitical ideas in many of these countries. The book deliberately raises the issue of the sea and constructions of ‘nature’, as these symbols are indispensable parts of many of these Indo-Pacific regional narratives.

This chapter demonstrates that 14:1-4a shows an uncanny resemblance to chs 40-55 both in style and in the pattern of thought. Since there is no compelling reason to date the two lengthy poems (at least their main bodies) for which 14:1-4a currently serves as a bridge-text in the post-exilic period, it seems natural to adopt the view that 14:1-4a was written in the late-exilic period by the same circle of writers who wrote chs 40-55. The main function 14:1-2 was designed to serve in its immediate literary setting was to interpret the imminent fall of Babylon in light of the divine will to restore and establish Zion as a place where the people of Israel return to and where the nations come to join and attach themselves to YHWH’s people – one of the core arguments of chs 40-55.

After first examining the return of the University Church to public discussion on the eve of the peaceful revolution of 1989, in which Leipzig played a leading role, this epilogue examines debates about this troubled memory site after 1989, including whether reconstruction of the University Church was possible or desirable. Passionate argumentation on all sides resulted in the formation of local initiatives, the resignation of a university president, and numerous architectural competitions. The resulting postmodern Paulinum and new Augusteum which have arisen on the western side of Augustus Square cite preceding structures but serve contemporary needs. Historical memory and the search for meaning after public trauma on this unmasterable memory site continue, with repercussions to the present day.

This chapter discusses the law on computer-related fraud and forgery. It argues that issues of computer fraud raise relatively few issues of legal significance. Taking someone else’s money without justification will always constitute some form of criminal offence, the exact nature of which will vary depending upon the nature of the conduct. The situation has been more difficult when the conduct involves evading the charges which would normally be levied in return for the provision of a service. The provisions of the Fraud Act 2006 should serve to close a loophole which had existed in English law since the move in the 1960s to reliance upon the notion of deception as the basis for this form of offence.

Return of the Pink Panther was planned for distribution in 1975, and the public was so very ready to be amused all over again by the Sellers/Clouseau character that the success of that sequel was followed the very next year by The Pink Panther Strikes Again. For Mancini, the task of scoring a Pink Panther movie had changed, too—the first film scored with that sly, sneaking sax theme and a lot of beguiling, equally sly cocktail music; the second film scored a bit more like a cartoon where the clever, plodding, main mystery theme on that wavering pump organ represented Clouseau's dysfunctional focus on the case at hand. Now with large-scale visual jokes taking up more screen space than the character comedy of Clouseau, the scoring needed to serve two masters: it needed scene-setting background tunes for clubs, discos, and resorts, and, more than ever, it needed bigger descriptive music to bolster the increasingly unrealistic and aggressive plot devices.

In this penultimate chapter, the ‘choreomania’ diagnosis all but dissolves. Visiting British and other colonial government anthropologists, moving around the colonial world from Jamaica and Papua New Guinea to New Zealand, read islanders performing ecstatic preparations for the ‘Great Awakening’ or the return of ancestors in rafts as participating in yet another iteration of a primitive type of dancing disease. Yet, as this chapter also shows, the ‘cargo cults’, just like the Hauhau movement, conjugated a complex play of counter-mimicry which reappropriated colonial props, language, and gesture in a theatre of messianic anticipation. In turn reappropriated by later twentieth-century anthropologists into a romantic narrative about native freedom and liberation from oppression, ‘choreomania’ turns on its head. No longer deemed merely ‘premodern’, dancing and shaking ecstatics and other millennialist prophets and their followers serve as fantastical models for a ‘Western’ world seeking to cultivate indigenous alterities of its own.

This chapter examines strategy and deterrence and traces the shift from deterrence by ‘punishment’ to deterrence by ‘denial’ in Washington’s conduct of the Global War on Terror. The former rested on an assumption that the consequences of an action would serve as deterrents. The latter may carry messages of possible consequences, but these are delivered by taking action that removes the capabilities available to opponents – in the given context, the Islamist terrorists challenging the US. Both approaches rest on credibility, but are more complex in the realm of counter-terrorism, where the US authorities have no obvious ‘return to sender’ address and threats to punish have questionable credibility. In this context, denial offers a more realistic way of preventing terrorist attacks. Yet, the advanced means available to the US are deeply ethically problematic in liberal democratic societies. However, there would likely be even bigger questions if governments failed to act.

Abstract How should we assess the social structures that govern human conduct and settle whether we are bound by their rules? One approach is to ask whether those social arrangements (e.g. our family structures) reflect pre-conventional facts about our nature. If they do, compliance will serve our interests because these rules are not just conventions. Another approach is to ask whether following a convention has desirable consequences. For example, the rule which makes the dollar bill legal tender is a convention and the great usefulness of having a medium of exchange ensures that we should follow that convention by accepting paper money in return for things of real value. This work argues that being bound by a convention can also be valuable for its own sake. People need meaning in their lives, and conventions infuse our acts and attitudes with normative significance, rendering them right or wrong, appropriate or inappropriate, required or forbidden. Such rules bind us not just in virtue of their usefulness but also because their absence would impoverish our social world. Appreciating this point is essential to a proper understanding of our cultures of neighbourliness and hospitality, family structures, systems of property rights, conventions around speech, the norms governing how we deport ourselves in public, and even the rules of a game.

This book examines the social and political origins of beleaguered and wistful expressions of nostalgia about the Ottoman Empire for various groups in the region. Rather than focus on how Ottomanism evolved, the book examines how social and political memories of the Ottoman past have been transformed in Turkish society along with reactions from the outside world. This Ottoman past, as remembered now, is grounded in contemporary conservative Islamic values. Thus, the connection between memories of the Ottoman past and these values defines Turkey’s new identity. This new expression of memory portrays Turkey as a victim of the major powers, justifying its position against its imagined internal and external enemies. The book explores why Turkish society has selectively brought the Ottoman Empire back into the public mindset and for what purpose. It traces how memory of the Ottoman period has changed in Turkish literature, mainstream history books, and other cultural products from the 1940s to the 21st century. A key aspect of Turkish literature is its criticism of the Kemalist modernization of Turkey matched by its return to the Ottoman past to articulate an alternative political language. This book responds to several interrelated questions: What is neo-Ottomanism, in general, and what is the significance of various terms using Ottoman as a variant and what purpose do they serve? Who constructed the term and for what purpose? What are the social and political origins of the current nostalgia for the Ottoman past?

This chapter defends three claims. First, it is morally impermissible for combatants fighting for a just cause to use civilians supporting an unjust war effort as involuntary human shields. Second, civilians who are forced to serve as involuntary shields by combatants fighting for an unjust cause retain their basic rights; they are not morally liable to intentional harm, and the proportionality of collaterally harming them is not affected by the wrongful conduct of the unjust combatants. Finally, civilians who voluntarily serve as human shields for unjust combatants compromise but do not lose their basic rights. Such voluntary shields are not morally liable to collateral harm, though less is required to justify collateral harm to them than to justify collateral harm to involuntary shields or to civilians who are merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In what ways did ‘English liberties and privileges’ circulate through the seventeenth-century English Empire? This essays explores the functions of liberty claims in the extra-English territories of the English king and finds that the language served progressively multiple and overlapping purposes, from allowing overseas emigrants to return home and advertising familiar rights in the new colonies, to serving claims that the colonial legal environment was similar to England’s—and even vice versa. Paying attention to the function of liberty claims across the century also sheds light on how they began to change the meaning of liberty itself: from a royally granted privilege to a right deserved by all subjects.

Feudalism generally refers to a medieval system of political, social, and economic organization based on vassalage and the granting of a foedum (fief) that developed in western Europe with the collapse of authority following Germanic invasions. Medieval feudal contracts involved the establishment of a hierarchical but mutually supportive relationship among private individuals, cemented by a ceremony in which a vassal paid homage and promised material and military support to a lord in return for the lord's protection and the investiture of a fief. Although feudal contracts governed the reciprocal obligations among the noble military elite, the landed estates that served as the basis of the warrior class's economic power required the labour of peasants.

Satires consequently grew more obscure as they increasingly served as an in-joke for a beset coterie. So, although outlandish satire did continue, it retreated from public dispute and acquired a tragic undertone of martyrdom. The fondness for allusions to the Odyssey betrays French reformers’ conflicted feelings over their exilic aspirations figured in references to Exodus. Satire remained one of the ways in which they could indulge nostalgia for their unreformed past, even as they demarcated themselves from it. The uneasy conjunction of Odyssey and Exodus combines into the unlikely figure of the reformer as “pilgrim,” a spiritual traveler who might one day return home.

Justice, Mercy, and Caprice is a work of criminal justice history that speaks to the gradual emergence of a more humane Irish state. It is a close examination of what can be learned from the National Archives of Ireland about the decision to grant clemency to men and women sentenced to death between the end of the civil war in 1923 and the abolition of capital punishment in 1990. Frequently, the decision to deflect the law from its course was an attempt to introduce a measure of justice to a system where the mandatory death sentence for murder caused predictable unfairness and undue harshness. In some instances the decision to commute a death penalty sprang from merciful motivations. In others it was capricious, depending on factors that should have had no place in the government’s decision-making calculus. The custodial careers of those whose lives were spared repay scrutiny. Women tended to serve relatively short periods in prison but were often transferred to a religious institution, such as a Magdalen laundry, where their coercive confinement continued, occasionally for life. Men, by contrast, served longer in prison but were discharged directly to the community. Political offenders, such as members of the IRA, were either executed hastily or, when the threat of capital punishment had passed, incarcerated for extravagant periods. The issues addressed are of continuing relevance for countries that retain capital punishment as the ultimate sanction.

This chapter is designed to guide clinicians in assisting service members to navigate the return from combat with regards to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and intimacy. The service members (and, by extension, their spouses) who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom are struggling with not only physical wounds from combat but also psychological/invisible wounds, including PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The symptoms of PTSD and TBI, including fatigue, irritability, insomnia, depression and cognitive deficits, overlap, and as a result, it can be difficult for clinicians and patients alike to tease out the specific diagnoses. Thus, this chapter discusses PTSD and intimacy issues for service members and spouses and provides recommendations for designing therapeutic interventions. Three case studies illustrate these interventions. Suggestion resources are also included.

The Real Ambassadors tells the story of three determined artists: Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, and Iola Brubeck, and the stand they took against segregation by writing and performing a jazz musical titled The Real Ambassadors. First conceived by the Brubecks in 1956, the musical’s journey to the stage for its 1962 premiere tracks extraordinary twists and turns across the backdrop of the civil rights movement. A variety of colorful characters, from Broadway impresarios to gang-connected managers, surface in the riveting storyline. During the Cold War, the US State Department enlisted some of America’s greatest musicians to serve as jazz ambassadors, touring the world to trumpet a so-called "free society." Honored as celebrities abroad, the jazz ambassadors, who were overwhelmingly African Americans, returned home to racial discrimination and deferred dreams. The Brubecks used this double standard as the central message for the musical, deploying humor and pathos to share perspectives on American values. On September 23, 1962, The Real Ambassadors’ stunning debut moved a packed arena at the Monterey Jazz Festival to laughter, joy, and tears. Although critics unanimously hailed the performance, it sadly became a footnote in cast members’ bios. The enormous cost of reassembling the star-studded cast made the creation impossible to stage and tour. However, The Real Ambassadors caps this jazz story by detailing how the show was triumphantly revived in 2014 by Jazz at Lincoln Center. This reaffirmed the musical’s place as an integral part of America’s jazz history, and served as an important reminder of how artists’ voices are a powerful force for social change.

This chapter discusses Plutarch’s depiction of an eminent musician’s performance at a symposium, the audience’s enthusiastic response to his ‘bad’ music, and Callimachus’ speech in its defence. Plutarch’s copious array of intertextual allusions serves to alert readers to the moral message the account is designed to convey. Numerous verbal and thematic echoes of Plato’s dialogues undermine the glamorous persona the musician projects, and expose the irresponsibility of the listeners’ responses. Callimachus’ defence is in turn subverted by confusions and unacceptable implications brought out through its medley of intertexts, which open with a flurry of explicit allusions to Peripatetic writings but eventually return to reminiscences of Plato. The chapter ends with the suggestion that in responding to Plutarch’s text, readers may also be filtering it through memories of their own past musical experiences, bringing the relation between the text’s message and its vehicle close to a species of intermediality.

This chapter returns to the issue of routine governance in the post-uprisings context. It details the processes of re-institutionalization of new or reformed models of governance in the four North African countries. These processes underpin the construction of revised political consensuses that become embodied in the institutional reorganizations of the immediate post-uprisings period. At the same time, the chapter highlights the continuities in form of mobilization that keep challenging the legitimacy of the post-revolutionary state or reformed authoritarian system. The narrative is articulated around key events that signal a new acknowledgement of institutionalized forms of governance over earlier protest behaviors. In this context, the construction of ‘revolutionary’ and ‘reformist’ narratives serve to produce post-uprisings actors by breaching the gaps between plural understandings and experiences of the uprisings. The interactions between these revised practices and identities structure politics in the post-uprising states by naturalizing a new combination of democratic and authoritarian routines.

Food features prominently in Hong Kong cinema, from the infamous “Eat my rice” scene in Woo’s heroic bloodshed A Better Tomorrow 2 to the special recipes of dueling restaurants in the Hui Brothers’ comedy Chicken and Duck Talk. While in many action movies, dramas and comedies, food brings people together, in Hong Kong horror films, food carries more ominous overtones. Cannibalism serves as the main course in Herman Yau’s Untold Story (aka Human Pork Buns) and Fruit Chan’s Dumplings (the former drawn from a real case and the latter a short and feature). Both explore the political and social underpinnings of their time. Untold Story (1993) is an excellent example of crisis cinema- in your face, low budget, high anxiety over the return of Hong Kong to China. Dumplings (2004) reflects the post-postmodern fascination with a youth culture, at any costs. Both films mark class distinctions and reflect the cultural importance of food in Chinese society as well as provide comment on their times.

The generation of Americans who served in the armed forces during World War II helped give the Democratic Party its commanding lead in voter identifications for years to come. This insight comes from an analysis of polls conducted between 1937 and 1953, all but a few by the Gallup Organization. The effects of the Depression and the New Deal notwithstanding, World War II swung an even heavier proportion of young Americans to the Democratic Party and gave it a firm hold on that generation. This was true especially for those in uniform during that war. Their commander in chief, a Democrat, was immensely popular with the troops. In the election of 1944, FDR won their votes, wherever they could cast them, in a landslide. The return to civilian life did nothing to dull the wartime edge of the Democratic Party among World War II veterans. This is an unsung legacy of FDR’s popular appeal that endured long after his death.

Abad de Santillán served on the powerful Antifascist Militias Committee, while Manuel Villar edited Solidaridad Obrera, an important anarchist periodical. Many other Spaniards returned from Argentina to participate in the civil war, among them José María Montero and Antonio Casanova. While these individuals were only a small number of those fighting in the war, their experience in Argentina and their enthusiasm for the social revolution at the outbreak of the civil war made them staunch supporters of the republican cause.

The first of three chapters examining animal characters within the life-story of the Buddha, this chapter focuses on the horse Kanthaka, who helps the bodhisattva (the buddha-to-be) renounce the world by carrying him away from his palace and kingdom in the middle of the night (an episode known as the Great Departure). The chapter argues that Kanthaka serves as a scapegoat for the bodhisattva—for at the beginning of the episode, the two figures are closely identified with each other, yet once the bodhisattva has renounced the world, it is Kanthaka who returns to the kingdom and bears the brunt of the emotional reactions of the bodhisattva’s loved ones. In the process, Kanthaka loses his life, and the narrative as a whole makes use of a sacrificial idiom that might be compared to the Vedic aśvamedha, or horse sacrifice.

This concluding chapter addresses the controversy of “slacktivism” and argues that mediated symbolic action does not necessarily become a substitute for other forms of political participation. However, it does present several notable risks: in addition to potentially exacerbating political polarization and partisanship, it may also attenuate the connection between symbolic victories in the media and complex political realities on the ground. The challenge, then, for those who adopt these practices is to work to retain and strengthen connections between style and substance, which requires introspection about the political content they spread to others and what they hope to achieve by doing so. In addition, a critical literacy of citizen marketing must also include an enhanced awareness of the broader power structures that bear upon it, from elite attempts to shape peer-to-peer political messaging flows to serve institutional agendas to gaps in technological access and skills that reproduce digital inequality.
