Анотація:
A finite element analysis of the ultimate strength of steel thin-walled beam–columns is discussed in this paper. The numerical model used was developed by Akoussah, Beaulieu, and Dhatt and is based on a Lagrangian formula of thin-walled bars. In this model, the law of multiaxial elastic–plastic behaviour was adopted and incorporated on the section's surface by Radau or Gauss type points. Case studies were performed in which different parameters likely to influence the behaviour of beam–columns were used. Corresponding interaction curves were plotted. The results obtained were compared with those of other authors for H sections under biaxial bending, for square or rectangular tubular sections under biaxial bending, and for H sections bended in relation to each of the principal axes. The results emphasize the key role played by shear stress on the bearing capacity of open section compressed members under bending. ABSTRACT Determining the deductibility of fines, penalties, settlements, and other forms of restitution paid by taxpayers as a result of violations of criminal and civil law fall under a number of sometimes conflicting code sections, IRS pronouncements, and case law. In this article, we discuss the deductibility of fines, penalties, and other forms of restitution under the provisions of IRC Section 162(f) and the violation of public policy doctrine. Since some taxpayers attempt to capitalize the expenditures rather than deduct them, we also discuss the application of Sections 263 and 263A to these payments. If a taxpayer incurs expenditures in a transaction not part of a trade or business, then the deduction of the expenditure is controlled by Section 165. The application of the violation of public policy doctrine and Section 162(f) to Section 165 are also evaluated. Following the discussion of the current cases and rulings, we recommend several changes in tax law that will clarify and simplify when expenditures related to illegal activities are deductible.

Abstract. In this study, the effect of fins' height and Stefan number on performance of a shell and tube heat exchanger which contains a phase change material is investigated numerically and experimentally. Melting time, solidification time, liquid mass fraction, melting and solidification front and temperature distribution in different directions (longitudinal, radial and angular) are among criteria for the heat exchangers' comparison. In order to generalize the comparison, melting and solidification fronts are studied for different sections of the shell, fin section and mid-section, for different fins' height during charging and discharging processes. The results show that, these two parameters play important roles in the heat exchanger performance. Increasing Stefan number, the melting time reduces; which exhibits a descending trend in rate when the fins are heightened. In addition, investigating both processes, it can be figured out that increasing fins' height influences the solidification time more significantly than melting.

Une simulation numérique par des éléments finis des écoulements transitoires à surface libre dans les canaux prismatiques est présentée. Dans cette étude, l'écoulement est supposé unidirectionnel dans un canal de faible pente. Le modèle mathématique est constitué d'un système de deux équations aux dérivées partielles de type hyperbolique résolu numériquement par la méthode des éléments finis. Pour définir les fonctions d'interpolation dans la forme intégrale des résidus pondérés, la méthode de Galerkin a été utilisée. Dans les applications, différentes sections prismatiques sont examinées. Les régimes transitoires étudiés sont dus à des manœuvres de vanne placée en aval du canal, l'extrémité amont étant connectée à un réservoir de niveau constant. Dans ces conditions, le régime transitoire correspond à une évolution de l'écoulement d'un régime permanent initial vers un régime permanent final. Ces deux régimes sont supposés uniformes à débit constant défini par la formule de Manning. Les résultats obtenus concernent l'évolution des paramètres hydrauliques en différentes sections du canal, suite à la manœuvre en aval. Deux cas de manœuvres sont considérés ; le cas d'une ouverture et le cas d'une fermeture. L'étude a permis d'analyser la propagation des ondes de surface et la réflexion de ces ondes sur les deux extrémités du canal. En particulier, les résultats numériques montrent que lorsque la largeur du lit du canal est très petite (cas de la section triangulaire), les fluctuations des profondeurs sont rapidement amorties.

Monetary fines represent an important instrument to address violations of Competition Law. The European Commission (EC) and the EU Courts have been primarily engaged in imposing fines in cases of breach of the first pillar, and have rarely dealt with cases of abuse based on the fining guidelines issued in accordance with Article 23(2) of Regulation 1/2003. Compared to the first two pillars, mergers have not received similar scholarly attention.1 2 Since 2017, the EC has expressed a growing interest in investigating and imposing significant fines to mergers and acquisitions in breach of procedural matters. Therefore this article addresses the application of Article 14 of the European Union Merger Regulation (EUMR) in imposing fines to mergers with European Union (EU) dimension. The EC decisions and EU Courts’ judgments related to fines on mergers in breach of procedural matters are discussed in four specific sections. The first section analyses article 14(1) of the EUMR, which empowers the EC to impose a fine of up to 1% of the total turnover in the preceding business year on undertakings for breach of procedural matters, including, among others, for providing incorrect or misleading information. This section will address the case of Facebook as the first case in which the EC imposed fines based on the new EUMR. In this case, although the undertakings mislead the EC, based on the offered cooperation, the Authority decided to reduce the fine. In addition, it is also important to address the legal basis applied by the EC in accepting the offered cooperation as a mitigating factor and whether this may develop into a guiding “precedent” in the future. The second section deals with five cases of violations of articles 4(1) and 7(1) EUMR related to fines prescribed in article 14(2) EUMR. With regards to four of them, judgments of EU Courts and decisions of the EC and National Competition Authority (NCA) are analysed. The fifth case, the one on Ernst and Young, provides for the first preliminary ruling on the notion of “gun-jumping”. The third section deals with Article 14(3) and the fining methods on mergers. By reviewing each of these five cases, it is important to address factors taken into consideration when imposing fines. An obvious deficiency is the absence of a legal basis, regardless of whether manifested in hard or soft law. Here it is relevant to inquire in what manner the EC imposes fines and why it occasionally mirrors the fining guidelines applicable to other pillars of EU Competition Law. The last point to be addressed is the one of policy and the need to balance EC discretional powers and relevant legal principles such as legal certainty, equal treatment, transparency, and consistency.3 The fourth section provides for concluding remarks.

In June 1994 an instrumented 150-m-long secondary road pavement section was built in Bedford County, Virginia. This pavement section was composed of nine individual segments each 15 m long. The nine sections include three groups with aggregate base layer thicknesses of 100, 150, and 200 mm. Three sections from each group were stabilized with geotextiles and three were stabilized with geogrids at the base-subgrade interface. The remaining three sections were kept as control sections. As part of the structural analysis, deflection data parameters such as the base damage index and surface curvature index calculated from falling weight deflectometer (FWD) data were analyzed after being corrected for temperature variations from the time of construction until October 2001. Performance criteria such as rutting measurements were also collected over the whole period. A nonlinear exponential model was used to describe the development of rutting versus cumulative equivalent single-axle loads for the 100-mm base course. A linear elastic program incorporating constitutive material properties was used to calculate vertical compressive stresses, which were used with FWD deflections to predict rutting rates with a mechanistic equation. The rutting rate results confirmed the separation function of geosynthetics that prevented the migration of fines from the subgrade to the base course layer and the penetration of the aggregate base layer into the subgrade. Rutting results, deflection data, and service life analysis showed that geosynthetically stabilized sections significantly improved the performance of the 100-mm base course sections.

The symmetry of a commensurately modulated crystal structure can be described in two different ways: in terms of a conventional three-dimensional space group or using the superspace concept in (3 +d) dimensions. The three-dimensional space group is obtained as a real-space section of the (3 +d) superspace group. A complete network was constructed linking (3 + 1) superspace groups and the corresponding three-dimensional space groups derived from rational sections. A database has been established and is available at http://superspace.epfl.ch/finder/. It is particularly useful for finding common superspace groups for various series of modular (`composition-flexible') structures and phase transitions. The use of the database is illustrated with examples from various fields of crystal chemistry.

This article tries to clarify Arthaśāstra III.15.1–10 which is a difficult section on legal cancellations of contracts (anuśaya) for merchandise and on illegal ones. Previous translators apparently misunderstood the case of perishable goods and the expression anuśayaṃ dadāti. The view put forward in the present paper builds on the distinction between “Kauṭilya Recension” and “Śāstric Redaction”. However, the sections concerned may contain even more interpolations than previously thought. A related passage on immovable property (AŚ III.9.6–9), specifying fines for unlawful cancellations, is discussed as well.

Between 1992 and 2003, we assessed the density of age-0+ brown trout (Salmo trutta) in a channelized stream in northern Sweden, which was restored using two different schemes. One section of the stream was restored by the addition of boulders and reconstruction of gravel beds (boulder + gravel section), whereas another section was restored through addition of boulders only (boulder-only section). In addition, we compared the substrate size composition of gravel beds and the egg-to-fry survival between the two stream sections, and we related the density of age-0+ brown trout to the area of reconstructed gravel beds. After the restoration, the density of age-0+ brown trout increased significantly in the boulder + gravel section and was positively correlated with the area of reconstructed gravel beds. By contrast, the density of age-0+ brown trout did not change in the boulder-only treatment. Egg-to-fry survival was significantly higher in the boulder + gravel section compared with the boulder-only section, probably because of the higher content of sand and fines in the gravel beds of the latter treatment. This study shows that the density of age-0+ brown trout was limited by the availability and quality of spawning substrate rather than by the structural habitat complexity.

Pour étudier la physique nucléaire des hautes énergies et les phénomènes associés, comme la transition de phase quark-gluon-plasma/matière hadronique, le modèle de Nambu et Jona Lasinio (NJL) constitue une alternative intéressante à la Chromodynamique Quantique, non solvable aux énergies considérées. En effet, le modèle NJL permet de décrire la physique des quarks à températures et densités finies. D'autre part, afin de tenter de corriger une limitation de ce modèle, l'absence de confinement, il a été proposé un couplage des quarks/antiquarks à une boucle de Polyakov, formant le modèle PNJL. L'objectif de cette thèse est de voir les possibilités offertes par les modèles NJL et PNJL, afin de décrire les particules sub-nucléaires pertinentes (quarks, mésons diquarks et baryons), d'étudier leurs interactions et de mener une étude dynamique avec ces particules. Après un rappel des outils pertinents, nous avons modélisé les quarks effectifs u, d, s, et les mésons. Ensuite, nous avons décrit les baryons comme des états liés quarks-diquarks. Une part du travail a concerné le calcul des sections efficaces liées aux réactions possibles avec ces particules. Nous avons incorporé ces travaux dans un code de calcul pour étudier le refroidissement d'un plasma de quarks/antiquarks et son hadronisation. Dans cette étude, chaque particule évolue dans un système où la température et les densités sont des paramètres locaux. Les interactions entre particules sont de deux types : interactions par collisions et interactions à distance, notamment entre quarks. Finalement, nous avons étudié les propriétés de notre approche : qualités, limitations et évolutions possibles
To study the high energy nuclear physics and the associated phenomenon, as the QGP/hadronic matter phase transition, the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model (NJL) appears as an interesting alternative of the Quantum Chromodynamics, not solvable at the considered energies. Indeed, the NJL model allows describing the quarks physics, at finite temperatures and densities. Furthermore, in order to try to correct a limitation of the NJL model, i. E. The absence of confinement, it was proposed a coupling of the quarks/antiquarks to a Polyakov loop, forming the PNJL model. The objective of this thesis is to see the possibilities offered by the NJL and PNJL models, to describe relevant sub-nuclear particles (quarks, mesons, diquarks and baryons), to study their interactions, and to proceed to a dynamical study involving these particles. After a recall of the useful tools, we modeled the u, d, s effective quarks and the mesons. Then, we described the baryons as quarks-diquarks bound states. A part of the work concerned the calculations of the cross-sections associated to the possible reactions implying these particles. Then, we incorporated these works in a computer code, in order to study the cooling of a quarks/antiquarks plasma and its hadronization. In this study, each particle evolves in a system in which the temperature and the densities are local parameters. We have two types of interactions: one due to the collisions, and a remote interaction, notably between quarks. Finally, we studied the properties of our approach: qualities, limitations, and possible evolutions

In regular design practice, when it comes to conventional loading, such as uniaxial compression and bending, the local buckling of thin plates is taken care of through cross section classification. The effect of warping torsion, which also gives rise to normal stresses in the section, however, is typically not considered in the process. Present work aimed to uncover the influence of warping torsion on the phenomena of local plate buckling and to investigate the limitations of the effective width method when it was applied against its intended use. In the case of varying results, a simple correction to the calculation method was to be developed to improve accuracy. The examined I-sections were tested to failure and results were obtained with two different approaches: with finite element method and a Eurocode-based hand-calculation. The finite element models were refined to closely mimic physical experiments and their results were accepted as the true resistance of the sections, while the calculation method tried to capture the structural response in a practical, easily understandable way. The calculated results showed reasonably good accuracy with that of the finite element analysis. However, what really stood out was how similar the change in resistance was when the section parameters were manipulated. Through a properly chosen function, this allowed for the creation of an exponent that could modify the calculated results to achieve an even greater accuracy. The eccentricity of the applied load on the system was also manipulated to alter the proportion of normal stresses due to the two examined effects. It became clear that the stresses from warping in the applied calculation model were underestimated and the otherwise conservative method of effective width lost much of its safety margin when its application was extended to warping as well. Consequently, the consideration of stresses from warping in the regular design process and stability control of commonly used thin walled open sections seemed to be justified. The effective width method could not reliably cover the issue with retaining its original margin of safety.

In this work, we present the formulation and implementation of two elastoplastic constitutive equations for kinematically exact thin-walled rod models. The first uses the fact that first order strains due to cross sectional shear stresses and warping are considered to formulate a small strains three-dimensional elastoplastic constitutive model. Given the kinematical hypothesis of non-deformability of the cross section in the projection of its plane, we may also assume that plastic deformations may occur due only to the cross sectional normal stresses, thereby allowing us to formulate a second, simple one-dimensional framework. Our approach adopts a standard additive decomposition of the strains together with a linear elastic relation for the elastic part of the deformation. Both ideal plasticity and plasticity with (linear) isotropic hardening are considered. The models have a computational implementation within a finite element thin-walled rod model and, following the kinematics adopted, we implement this equation on models with consideration of the warping of the cross sections, having 7 degrees of freedom. The formulation and implementation presented is validated by the analysis of problems known in the literature and comparison of the results. We believe that simple elastoplastic models combined with robust thin-walled rod finite element may be a useful tool for the analysis of thin-walled rod structures, such as, e.g., steel structures.
Neste trabalho, apresentamos a formulação e implementação de duas equações constitutivas elastoplásticas simples para modelos de barra de parede fina cinematicamente exatos. O primeiro usa o fato de deformações de primeira ordem devido a esforço cortante na seção transversal e empenamento serem considerados para formular um modelo constitutivo elastoplástico tridimensional para pequenas deformações. Dada a hipótese cinemática de não deformabilidade da seção transversal da barra na projeção de seu plano, podemos também assumir que deformações plásticas ocorrem devido apenas às tensões normais à seção transversal, nos permitindo formular um segundo modelo unidimensional simples. Nossa abordagem adota uma decomposição aditiva padrão das deformações com uma relação elástica linear para a parte elástica das deformações. Tanto plasticidade ideal quanto plasticidade com encruamento isótropo (linear) são considerados. Os modelos resultantes têm uma implementação computacional com elementos finitos de barras e, de acordo com a cinemática adotada, implementamos esta equação com consideração do empenamento das seções transversais, possuindo 7 graus de liberdade. A formulação e implementação apresentadas são validadas pela análise de problemas conhecidos na literatura e comparação dos resultados. Acreditamos que modelos elastoplásticos simples combinados com um elemento finito de barras robusto podem ser uma ferramenta útil para a análise de estruturas reticuladas como, por exemplo, estruturas de aço.

Les biais résiduels sont dus aux approximations et modélisations (modèle d'autoprotection, développement en polynômes de Legendre des lois de choc) qui sont mises en oeuvre pour représenter les phénomènes physiques (absorption résonnante, anisotropie de diffusion respec- tivement). Ce document se penche sur la question de la pertinence de la modélisation de la loi de choc sur une base polynômiale tronquée. Les polynômes de Legendre sont utilisés pour représenter la section de transfert multigroupe dans les codes déterministes or ces polynômes modélisent mal la forme très piquée de ces sections, surtout dans le cadre des maillages énergétiques fins et pour les noyaux légers. Par ailleurs, cette représentation introduit aussi des valeurs négatives qui n'ont pas de sens physique. Dans ce travail, après une brève description des lois de chocs, les limites des méthodes actuelles sont démontrées. Une modélisation de la loi de choc par une fonction constante par morceaux qui pallie à ces insuffisances, a été retenue. Cette dernière nécessite une autre mod- élisation de la source de transfert, donc une modification de la méthode actuelle des ordonnées discrètes pour résoudre l'équation du transport. La méthode de volumes finis en angle a donc été développée et implantée dans l'environ- nement du solveur Sn Snatch, la plateforme Paris. Il a été vérifié que ses performances étaient similaires à la méthode collocative habituelle pour des sections représentées par des polynômes de Legendre. Par rapport à cette dernière, elle offre l'avantage de traiter les deux représenta- tions des sections de transferts multigroupes : polynômes de Legendre et fonctions constantes par morceaux. Dans le cadre des calculs des réacteurs, cette méthode mixte a été validée sur différents motifs : des cellules en réseau infini, des motifs hétérogènes et un calcul de réflecteur. Les principaux résultats sont : - un développement polynômial à l'ordre P 3 est suffisant par rapport aux biais résiduels dus aux autres modélisations (autoprotection, méthode de résolution spatiale). Cette modéli- sation est convergée au sens de l'anisotropie du choc sur les cas représentatifs des réacteurs à eau légère. - la correction de transport P 0c n'est pas adaptée, notamment sur les calculs d'absorbant B4 C.

AbstractThe second of two main chapters, this analyses the redemption of exiles and what this can tell us about the values of late medieval Kampen society concerning morally acceptable behaviour. The first section concerns the practical aspects around the reintegration of banished individuals from all categories, whereas the second section focuses specifically on the financial arrangements between exiles and magistrates which allowed the former to return to Kampen. The final section discusses the links between debt and morality, in order to establish whether defaulting public debtors were banished because they were considered to have displayed immoral behaviour.

AbstractReinforced concrete is one of the most common materials in construction and knowledge of the behavior of reinforced concrete with lateral reinforcement has been one of the important topics in researches. Due to the high cost of laboratory studies, researchers have tried to develop numerical methods with the help of relationships obtained from analytical researches as well as various programs including finite element codes. In most studies, moment-curvature diagrams in reinforced concrete with confined cores have been significant in studying the behavior and performance of reinforced concrete sections. In this research, using analytical relations and applying MATLAB program, a suitable algorithm for calculating the moment-curvature in reinforced concrete columns with lateral reinforcement is presented. In this algorithm, the famous Mander and Kent and Park models are used and a method for eliminating the non-confined concrete cover during the analysis is proposed. Finally, the moment-curvature was obtained for 4 sections of reinforced concrete and compared with the KSU-RC program, which show a good agreement.

Detailed two-dimensional finite element analyses of the cross-sections of a model CVI (chemical vapor infiltrated) SiC/SiC (silicon carbide fiber in a silicon carbide matrix) ceramic matrix composites are performed. High resolution images of the cross-section of this composite material are generated using serial sectioning of the test specimens. These images are then used to develop very detailed finite element models of the cross-sections using the public domain software OOF2 (Object Oriented Analysis of Material Microstructures). Examination of these images shows that these microstructures have significant variability and irregularity. How these variabilities manifest themselves in the variability in effective properties as well as the stress distribution, damage initiation and damage progression is the overall objective of this work. Results indicate that even though the macroscopic stress-strain behavior of various sections analyzed is very similar, each section has a very distinct damage pattern when subjected to inplane tensile loads and this damage pattern seems to follow the unique architectural and microstructural details of the analyzed sections.

This paper presents the design and development of a pneumatic soft-and-rigid hybrid actuator system that consists of half-bellow shaped soft sections in-between block shape rigid sections. The hybrid actuator architecture allows for selective actuation of each soft section (acting as a joint) with precise control over its bending motion. The soft half-bellow section is designed as a series of hollow ridges extending straight to a flat base. This geometry provides forward and backward bending motion when subjected to positive and negative pressure, respectively. Bending occurs as the ridges of the soft section expand and contract more than the flat base due to pressure variations. The rigid sections serve as connections between soft actuator sections and enhance force transfer. As a case study, a hybrid actuator system was designed as a soft robotic digit with three soft joints and four rigid connecting sections. Finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the design parameters such as number of ridges and materials for the robotic finger. The joints (from proximal to distal) were designed to have four, three, and two ridges, respectively, to generate the desired range of angular motion. Fabrication of the finger was done with silicone rubber RTV-4234-T4 and PMC polyurethane rubber using a combination of compression molding and overmolding processes. The angular and translational displacements of the robotic finger were experimentally and numerically evaluated at different pressures. The trajectory of the fingertip is comparable to those reported in literature for continuous soft actuators with a similar length. The significance of this actuator system is that both range of angular and translational motions are achieved at low pressure, less than 70kPa, as opposed to reported pressures of greater than 100kPa. The presented results show the great potential of the soft robotic finger for use in robotic, rehabilitation, and assistive device applications.

In flexible multibody systems, many components are often approximated as beams or shells. More often that not, classical beam theories, such as Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, form the basis of the analytical development for beam dynamics. The advantage of this approach is that it leads to a very simple kinematic representation of the problem: the beam’s section is assumed to remain plane and its displacement field is fully defined by three displacement and three rotation components. While such approach is capable of capturing the kinetic energy of the system accurately, it cannot represent the strain energy adequately. For instance, it is well known from Saint-Venant’s theory for torsion that the cross-section will warp under torque, leading to a three-dimensional deformation state that generates a complex stress state. To overcome this problem, sectional stiffnesses are computed based on sophisticated mechanics of material theories that evaluate the complete state of deformation. These sectional stiffnesses are then used within the framework of an Euler-Bernoulli beam theory based on far simpler kinematic assumptions. While this approach works well for simple cross-sections made of homogeneous material, very inaccurate predictions result for realistic sections, specially for thin-walled beams, or beams made of anisotropic materials. This paper presents a different approach to the problem. Based on a finite element discretization of the cross-section, an exact solution of the theory of three-dimensional elasticity is developed. The only approximation is that inherent to the finite element discretization. The proposed approach is based on the Hamiltonian formalism and leads to an expansion of the solution in terms of extremity and central solutions, as expected from Saint-Venant’s principle.

In automotive body design use of AHSS (advanced high strength steel) has been rapidly increasing in the past few years. AHSS which has higher yield strength offers opportunity to reduce gage and hence weight reduction of the body structure. However, it is also known that for the flat thin walled members, as the stress increases and gage gets thinner, the tendency of local instability such as buckling, increases. In this presentation we will discuss finite strip method to estimate linear buckling load for thin walled sections. The finite strip method is simpler version of finite element method, it can be applied on 2D sections, requires limited computer resources and little training to use. Cross section studies based on finite strip method are compared with traditional section analysis as well as finite element method. The results indicates that, the finite strip method is equivalent to finite element method in predicting local buckling of prismatic structures, which is better estimates of the section load capacity compared current methods in CATIA based on fully plastic stress distributions.

<p>Paper reports findings from parametric analysis of open section constant height composite bridges with considered spans ranging from 20 to 70 m (for larger spans closed box girder section is recommended). For these spans, girder structural system is analyzed for permanent and traffic loads, and thus steel quantity determined according to Eurocode limit states. For each span, possible sections comprise various “<span>I</span>” girder types and various number of girders determined from variable bridge width, distinguishing two groups of sections – sections with only two main girders (comprising hunched deck plate of variable thickness) and sections with more than two girders (comprising constant thickness deck plate). Other considered parameters are section height, steel flange width and occurrence of web stiffeners for buckling verification. Analysis is performed on finite element models, according to typical construction stages, where composite section is activated only for loads applied after in‐situ concreating of deck slab. For each variable set, needed steel quantity is recorded. Graphical representation of all results is plotted in diagrams, showing section types and steel quantity for a given range of span lengths. In conclusion, comments are given for use of composite cross sections according to the bridge span length and width.</p>

A formulation for analysis of general cross-section properties has been developed. This formulation is based on the stress-strain states in the classic six equilibrium modes of a beam by considering a finite thickness slice modelled by a single layer of 3D finite elements. The displacement variation in the lengthwise direction is in the form of a cubic polynomial, which is here represented by Hermitian interpolation, whereby the degrees of freedom are concentrated on the front and back faces of the slice. The theory is illustrated by application to a simple cross-section for which an analytical solution is available. The paper also shows an application to wind turbine blade cross-sections and discusses the effect of the finite element discretization on the cross-section properties such as stiffness parameters and the location of the elastic and shear centers.

Abstract Algorithms have been developed for warping analysis and calculation of the shearing stresses in a general porous cross section of a long rod when it is subjected to twisting torques at its ends. The shape and dimensions of the cross section full of holes are defined from the binary segmented image data with by a micro-CT scanning technique. Finite difference approximation of the Laplace equation governing the cross-sectional warping leading to the matrix solution by a Gauss-Seidel process is discussed. Method of pointer matrix which keeps the locations of the nonzero elements of the coefficient matrix, is employed to expedite the iterative solution. Computer programs are coded in QuickBASIC language to facilitate plotting of the computed distributions of warping and shearing stresses. The classical torsional problem of square and thin-walled cross sections are used to reexamine the accuracy of the developed algorithms and results are found to be in very good agreement.

This report presents a case study for constructing aggregate subgrade improvement (ASI) layers using quarry by-product aggregates (QBA), a quarry mix of large primary crushed rocks (PCR) and sand-sized quarry fines. The construction took place at Larry Power Road in Bourbonnais Township in Kankakee County, Illinois, where the Illinois Department of Transportation placed two QBA mixes. The first mix (QBA_M1) consisted of 45% quarry by-products and 55% railroad ballast–sized 3×1 PCR. The second mix (QBA_M2) consisted of 31% and 69% quarry by-products and PCR, respectively. Two conventional ASI sections were also constructed conforming to Illinois Department of Transportation’s CS02 gradation. All sections consisted of a 9 in. (229 mm) QBA/PCR layer topped with a 3 in. (76 mm) dense-graded capping layer. Laboratory studies preceded the construction to recommend optimum quarry by-product content in the QBA materials and construction practice. The Illinois Center for Transportation research team monitored the quality and uniformity of the construction using nondestructive testing techniques such as dynamic cone penetrometer, lightweight deflectometer, and falling weight deflectometer. The segregation potential was monitored by visual inspection and imaging-based techniques. Short-term field evaluation of the constructed QBA layers, particularly QBA_M2 with a 31% quarry by-product content, showed no evidence of abnormal segregation and did not jeopardize the structural integrity of the QBA ASI layers, which had slightly lower but comparable strength and stiffness profiles to the conventional ASI sections. The use of QBA materials in ASI was field validated as a sustainable construction practice to provide stable pavement foundation layers.

Two stratigraphic sections were measured through Late Triassic - Early Jurassic aged strata in the Blue Mountains map area (NTS 340-B/11) on Ellesmere Island and the Depot Point map area (NTS 049-G/7) on Axel Heiberg Island. These sections are subdivided in terms of established member and formation names based on previous mapping along the north-eastern margin of the Sverdrup Basin. The lowermost strata in the Heiberg Formation, the Romulus Member (510-575 m thick), is a coarsening-upward succession of mudstone to fine-grained sandstone from a prodelta to delta plain environment. The overlying Fosheim Member (317-425 m) is a coal-bearing and sandstone-rich interval from a mixed alluvial-marine environment, such as a delta plain. It is overlain by the Remus Member (100-112 m); a sandstone-rich unit representative of shallow marine deposits. The Heiberg Formation at Depot Point is of similar thickness (1009 m) to the Blue Mountains (1035 m) and may represent a marginally more distal basinal setting with a thinner Fosheim Member but a slightly thicker Romulus and Remus members.

This study investigated the causes for premature, transverse cracking on urban jointed plain concrete pavements in Illinois. A field survey of 67 sections throughout Illinois coupled with ultrasonic evaluation was completed to synthesize the extent of premature cracking on urban JPCP. The visual survey showed some transverse and longitudinal cracks were a result of improper slab geometry (excessive slab length and width). Ultrasonic tests over the contraction joints determined some notched joints had not activated and adjacent transverse cracks were likely formed as a result. Three-dimensional finite-element analyses confirmed that cracking would not develop as a result of normal environmental factors and slab-base frictional restraint. The concrete mixture also did not appear to be a contributing factor to the premature cracks. Finally, the lack of lubrication on dowel bars was determined to potentially be a primary mechanism that could restrain the transverse contraction joints, produce excessive tensile stresses in the slab, and cause premature transverse cracks to develop.

This document presents a description of the octree mesh-generation capabilities and of the parallel mesh adaptation kernel. As it is discussed in Section 1.3.2 of part B of the project proposal there are two parallel research lines aimed at developing scalable adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) algorithms and implementations. The first one is based on using octree-based mesh generation and adaptation for the whole simulation in combination with unfitted finite element methods (FEMs) and the use of algebraic constraints to deal with non-conformity of spaces. On the other hand the second strategy is based on the use of an initial octree mesh that, after make it conforming through the addition of templatebased tetrahedral refinements, is adapted anisotropically during the calculation. Finer granularity of action items required to give effect to this Conservation and Management Plan for the National Heritage Listed Fitzroy River Catchment Estate are outlined in section 7 and which will be more fully explored by the Martuwarra Council in the coming months and years.

This literature review finds that the main malicious threats to civilian aviation since 1975 are attacks by terrorist groups, deliberate or accidental damage arising from conflicts, and incidents caused by people who work for airlines or airports. While the sector has responded to hijackings and bombings with increasing security since the 1970s, actors seeking to attack aircraft have modified their tactics, and new threats such as liquid explosives and cyber attacks have emerged. Civilian aviation has seen relatively fewer accidents and deaths over the years, but threats remain. The review focuses on malicious threats to civilian aviation. It, therefore, excludes weather events or accidents. The first section lists major malicious threats to civilian aviation since 1975. It includes both actual and planned events (e.g. hijackings that were prevented) that are recorded in open-source documents. Each threat is listed alongside information on its cause (e.g. terrorism, state actions, crime), the context in which it occurred (broader factors shaping the risk including geography, regime type, technology), and its impact (on passengers, policy, security, economic). The second section discusses some of the trends in threats to aviation. Motives for malicious threats include terrorism, crime, asylum-seeking, and insider attacks by aggrieved or mentally ill airline staff. Hijacking has been the most common form of threat, although bombing or suicide attacks have killed more people. Threats may also take the form of accidental attacks on civilian planes misidentified as threats in conflict zones. Experts suggest that growing threats are cyberattacks and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, although neither has yet caused a major incident.

This paper extends the Baltagi et al. (2018, 2021) static and dynamic ε-contamination papers to dynamic space-time models. We investigate the robustness of Bayesian panel data models to possible misspecification of the prior distribution. The proposed robust Bayesian approach departs from the standard Bayesian framework in two ways. First, we consider the ε-contamination class of prior distributions for the model parameters as well as for the individual effects. Second, both the base elicited priors and the ε-contamination priors use Zellner (1986)’s g-priors for the variance-covariance matrices. We propose a general “toolbox” for a wide range of specifications which includes the dynamic space-time panel model with random effects, with cross-correlated effects `a la Chamberlain, for the Hausman-Taylor world and for dynamic panel data models with homogeneous/heterogeneous slopes and cross-sectional dependence. Using an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, we compare the finite sample properties of our proposed estimator to those of standard classical estimators. We illustrate our robust Bayesian estimator using the same data as in Keane and Neal (2020). We obtain short run as well as long run effects of climate change on corn producers in the United States.
