This study investigates the possibility that the characteristics of assessment tools may influence the results of individual competency evaluations. A self-report survey consisting of 28 items was developed to assess core competencies and was compared with the results obtained from K-CESA’s performance-based and self-report assessments. The study involved 117 undergraduate students from S University who participated in the K-CESA assessment. Correlation analysis, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and linear regression models were applied to examine the relationships and predictive accuracy between the self-report survey results and the K-CESA outcomes. The correlation analysis revealed that, even when assessing the same competencies, the relationship between the performance-based evaluation results from K-CESA and the self-report survey results developed in this study was very weak. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between the self-report evaluation results from K-CESA and the self-report survey results from this study, with strong predictive accuracy. This indicates that even with fewer items, the self-report evaluation results from K-CESA can be effectively predicted. These findings highlight the importance of assessment methods in determining competency evaluation results. Furthermore, the study provides practical implications by proposing directions to reduce discrepancies between self-report measures widely used in education and actual performance, thereby improving the validity of competency assessment tools.

In a recent study on food-evoked emotions, we observed that people often misunderstood the currently available affective self-report tools. We, therefore, developed a new intuitive and language-independent self-report instrument called the EmojiGrid: a rectangular response grid labeled with facial icons (emoji) that express different degrees of valence and arousal. We found that participants intuitively and reliably reported their affective appraisal of food by clicking on the EmojiGrid, even without verbal instructions. In this study, we investigated whether the EmojiGrid can also serve as a tool to assess one’s own (experienced) emotions and perceived emotions of others. In the first experiment, participants (N = 90) used the EmojiGrid to report their own emotions, evoked by affective images from a database with corresponding normative ratings (obtained with a 9-point self-assessment mannikin scale). In the second experiment, participants (N = 61) used the EmojiGrid to report the perceived emotional state of persons shown in different affective situations, in pictures from a database with corresponding normative ratings (obtained with a 7-point Likert scale). For both experiments, the affective (valence and arousal) ratings obtained with the EmojiGrid show excellent agreement with the data provided in the literature (intraclass correlations of at least 0.90). Also, the relation between valence and arousal shows the classic U-shape at the group level. Thus, the EmojiGrid appears to be a useful graphical self-report instrument for the assessment of evoked and perceived emotions.

Extension has a role to play in workforce development by preparing the next generation to be successful communicators. While Extension 4-H youth programs have contributed to public speaking development since their inception, there has not been a validated instrument to assess young people’s public speaking self-efficacy. We utilized an iterative-scale development process to develop, test, and refine such a tool. We hope youth development professionals will consider using the Youth Public Speaking Self-Efficacy (PSSE) survey tool to measure and report youth’s PSSE skills, along with the sources influencing these skills, to help with program planning, implementation, and professional development activities.

Background In recent times, the efforts to profile the language characteristics of bilinguals have been extended from mere documentation of proficiency in each language to the determination of language dominance that captures both proficiency and usage (i.e., frequency & contexts) of each language. In multilingual countries, individuals are immersed in various languages in different contexts. With the broader intention to improve the linguistic profiling of bilinguals in countries with similar characteristics, we aimed to adapt and validate the Self-report classification tool in Indian Kannada-English bilinguals. Methods A group of 88 adult Kannada-English bilingual participants self-rated their language proficiency. We measured their language dominance with the adapted tool. Finally, to objectively measure their language abilities, we used the short version of the Bilingual Aphasia Test. Results Discriminant analysis of the ratings showed that the self-report classification tool accurately classified our participants into three groups based on language dominance. Both the self-rating and the objective measure of language proficiency supported the (dominance) classifications by the adapted tool. Conclusion Findings show that the adapted self-report classification tool is valid for determining language dominance in Kannada-English bilinguals. Further, the current study shows that this tool is adaptable to novel bilingual language dyads.

Persons with aphasia (PWAs) often demonstrate challenges in the areas of expressive language, comprehension, reading, and writing. Due to these deficits, PWAs have limited opportunity to express their opinions and contribute to treatment planning. This project focused on the development of a self-report needs assessment tool for PWAs that facilitates PWAs participation in treatment planning. The needs assessment tool was designed using aphasia-friendly features including pictographic/visual analog scale, key words in bold, simple wording, large font, consistent question formatting, flexible administration, and the use of a communication partner/interview. The needs assessment tool was administered to seven PWAs in the Bowling Green, Kentucky area. Participants were recruited from short-term rehabilitation facilities, long-term care facilities, and personal homes. The needs assessment tool is comprised of 12 items targeting interest in therapeutic offerings for inclusion in a new intensive comprehensive aphasia program (ICAP). Results revealed the importance of flexible administration in response to participants’ communication abilities and limitations. With use of communicative support, the needs assessment tool provided an opportunity for PWAs to effectively express treatment preferences. Participants indicated moderate interest in an ICAP at Western Kentucky University and treatment options including individual speech and language therapy, physical therapy, and community outings.

Adherence is necessary to establish the effectiveness of rehabilitation exercises for those with long term conditions, but measuring it is problematic. Adherence is vital when attempting to measure and understand how an intervention works; without appropriate levels of adherence it is not possible to conduct a fair test of an intervention since failure to find benefit may be due to poor adherence rather than an ineffective intervention. There are no gold standard measures, and objective measurement devices are fallible. Without an accurate way to assess if participants are adherent to their exercise programs the efficacy of the programme cannot be assessed. Therefore the objective of this PhD was to develop a psychometrically valid and reliable self-report adherence measure to assess the likelihood of adherence for stroke survivors called the Stroke Rehabilitation Exercise Adherence Measure, (StREAM). A large systematic review was conducted to synthesise the existing evidence for self-report measures of adherence to prescribed unsupervised exercise programmes. The review found many measures but few possessed acceptable any tested psychometric properties and therefore the need for a psychometrically sound adherence measure to assess the likelihood of adherence was highlighted. To ensure StREAM had robust content validity stroke survivors (n=16), physiotherapists (n=3), and exercise professionals (n=2) were interviewed. Items were created from salient phases in the interviews which were then discussed at two focus groups of stroke survivors. This ensured items in StREAM were suitable and comprehensible to the target population.

Ever since the effective introduction of psychology professionals into sporting teams, they have encountered demands to evaluate the subjects involved in this area, particularly athletes. Accordingly, the need for these professionals to avail themselves of psychological evaluation tools that are capable of assisting them in this task, has become increasingly imperative. However, the lack of valid tools imposes significant limitations on these professionals. This lack is, at the same time, a challenge to psychology as well as a field of investigation that is still open to researchers in this area. In the 1970s, a scale was developed in Brazil by Ryad Simon, known as the Operational Adaptive Diagnostic Scale (EDAO), to evaluate adaptive efficiency. It is based on the concept that adaptive efficiency represents the ability of a subject to cope with life s trials and tribulations. Data on the subject are obtained by way of a clinical interview. The EDAO has already proved to be valid for different strata of the clinical and non-clinical population. A self-report version, to evaluate the effectiveness of adaptation of patients in community clinics, is under development and has been provisionally assigned the acronym EDAO-AR. This study proposes the development of a version of the EDAO-AR for the evaluation of athletes, as well as examining some of its proof of validity. The study has evolved in two stages: a) adaptation of the EDAO-AR and the construction of new items; analysis of content by (specialist) judges; and a semantic analysis of the items by athletes in different sports and with different levels of schooling; b) estimate of the internal consistency of the items, distributed by factor and for the scale as a whole, evaluated using Cronbach s alpha coefficient; the MSA and KMO indices were also evaluated and finally, the dimensionality of the scales was checked by means of exploratory factorial analysis. The sample comprised 219 athletes from the following categories of sport: Athletics, Basketball, Indoor Soccer, Swimming, Rugby and Volleyball, enrolled in their respective federations in the youth and adult categories. Assuming that the adaptation of the subjects is examined based on the suitability demonstrated in the Affection-Relation (AR) and Productivity (Pr) sectors, the items were built and evaluated separately, each set of items being regarded as a different tool. The final scale was made up of 41 items, 19 for the evaluation of the AR sector and 22 for the evaluation of Pr. The results show that the AR scale and the Pr scale both evaluate the quality of adaptation in accordance with three dimensions: Self-control, Interpersonal relationships and Coping. It is suggested that there is a need to develop new items for the AR scale in order to achieve higher indices of internal consistency for the overall scale, as well as for the respective factors. Finally, the need to use both the scales in the evaluation of the adaptive configuration of athletes should be stressed.

Research on self-monitoring in the classroom setting has shown decreases in problem behavior and increases in academic engagement in students. Behavior rating scales can be used by teachers to monitor student progress or by students as a self-monitoring tool. The current study examined the impact of using the Individualized Behavior Rating Scale Tool (IBRST) as a self-monitoring tool on problem and on-task behavior in students in a high-need public elementary school. The results indicated that the self-monitoring with the IBRST successfully decreased disruptive behavior and increased on-task behavior in all 3 participating students during targeted academic time periods, evidenced by both direct observations and teacher- collected IBRST data. Improved levels of behaviors were maintained during fading with all 3 students and at 1-week follow-up with 2 students. The results also showed that both teachers and students had high levels of satisfaction with the self-monitoring procedures using the IBRST.

Australians’ understanding of health benefits of exercise and physical activity generally has increased. Regrettably, this understanding fails to translate into action. National figures indicate 75% of adults do not meet Australian National Physical Activity Guidelines recommendations for aerobic and muscle strengthening activity (Australian Institute of Health & Welfare [AIHW], 2019). Neglecting the resistance exercise component of the physical activity guidelines is prominent in women. During 2017-2018 only 22% of women met these requirements (AIHW, 2019). The aim of this study was to develop a psychometrically valid self-report tool to prospectively identify barriers and motivation factors for resistance exercise participation in women aged 35-54 years.

A sequential exploratory mixed methods design was used develop a tool to discern issues for women aged 35-54 years in resistance exercise. This design method facilitated exploration of the composite of issues that need to be addressed in the development of a suitable tool, namely, a self-report tool advocating for resistance exercise - START. The study had eight stages starting with the qualitative components; conducting a review of the literature, identifying key issues influencing participation in resistance exercise for women aged 35-54 years; deciding domain specification and individual items for inclusion in the tool from the literature review; establishing face and content validity using stakeholders. Fourteen women provided opinions and feedback on the tool across three Team sessions using an iterative process to refine the tool. Six Experts were then interviewed for their opinions and feedback on individual item meaning, wording and construct. Stage six was construction of a complete preliminary version of the tool. Stage seven and eight made up the quantitative components of the study design. Data collection using Qualtrics XM as the survey platform was performed in stage seven. The final stage eight was psychometric testing of collected data for validity. Principal Component Analysis (greater than 0.4) was used for item reduction, Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity (p< 0.05) and Kaiser-Meyer Olkin (KMO) to measure sampling adequacy, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (> 0.70) to test reliability of the tool. Final reduced items were then collated to create a final version of the tool.

The scoping review revealed that engagement and participation in resistance exercise by women is a multifactorial and dynamic behavioural interplay between sociodemographic, pregnancy, intra-personal and inter-personal factors. A subsequent integrative review found five domains of importance for women aged 35-54 years: perceived time constraints, knowledge and education, modality and intensity, social support and behavioural strategies. Following stakeholder input, 20-items addressing knowledge and understanding of resistance exercise and 99-items addressing factors influencing participation in resistance exercise for women were determined for inclusion in the tool (START). Items reflecting barriers were mental challenges (mindset), perception of resistance training (intrinsic), physical barriers (actual and perceived), scheduling, user-friendliness, and programme leadership. Items reflecting motivators were intrinsic factors, extrinsic factors, scheduling, setting/environment, and programme leadership/instructor preference.

Refinement and reduction of questions after Principal Component Analyses resulted in 14 questions for, Knowledge and understanding, and 63 questions for, Factors of participation. Knowledge and understanding questions organised into three themes; theoretical understanding; practical understanding; and everyday inclusion. Factors of participation organised into eight content areas; consequences (perceived and actual); social/organised activity; social/instructor characteristics; significance to self; health; value; setting preference; and flexibility. Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant across items (p<0.001). The KMO was above 0.5 for all but three items. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient demonstrated good internal validity of the final included items (averaging above the predetermined 0.7 across items).

To illicit change in resistance exercise participation levels for health and functional ageing, exercise health professionals’ cognisance of resistance exercise specific beliefs, understanding, and behaviours in women aged 35-54 years is necessary. Recurrent use of the START tool can identify shifting barriers and motivators to resistance exercise for individual women in their everyday life. Exercise health professionals may then work concurrently to develop strategies relevant to a woman’s shifting everyday life factors in ways that are meaningful and promote engagement and continued participation in resistance exercise.

Short Message Service (SMS) has immense potential for self-report data collection because it makes use of mobile phones that people already own, and allows researchers to communicate with participants regardless of physical location. Though interest in the possibilities of SMS as a tool for psychological research is slowly growing, to date, there has been no structured investigation of how this potential may be applied in psychological research. The research within this thesis examined the feasibility of using SMS as a tool for self-report psychological research, focussing on its strengths and weaknesses as a research mode. Across fifteen studies, this was investigated using a mixture of literature review, meta-analysis, surveys, and interviews. Participant samples varied from the broad (general population, university students) to specific (the elderly, the deaf). Strengths of SMS as a tool for self-report psychological research included growing interest in research community; positive perceptions of SMS as a research tool amongst potential sample; prompt responses and high response rate; suitability for frequent repeated sampling; and usefulness as a reminder prompt to support other modes of data collection. Weaknesses included a disconnect between stated willingness to participate and actual participation; response incompleteness; unsuitability for infrequent sampling; and some problems with psychometric equivalence in relation to other research modes like online or paper surveys. This was the first structured evaluation of SMS as a tool for self-report data collection in psychological research. Conclusions are limited by somewhat arbitrary design choices (such as the psychological topic within surveys) made in the absence of guiding background literature. Future research can refine these choices and use the logic presented here to guide further investigation into how SMS performs with more varied samples, different psychological topics, and as part of different research designs. This research has shown that while SMS has great potential as a tool for psychological self-report research, it has a number of weaknesses. Identifying these strengths and weaknesses, and some design choices which may mitigate the weaknesses, will open up possibilities for a wide range of future psychological research.

Анотація:
Objectives: The primary objective of this research was to inform the criterion validity of the single self-report depression screening question in the interRAI-Contact Assessment (CA) against the validated Depression Rating Scale (DRS) in the RAI-Home Care (HC) instrument. To achieve this objective, two overarching research questions were addressed: 1) What is the DRS cut-point best suited for the detection of a possible depressed mood state?; and 2) What are the consistencies in the prevalence rates of the CA’s single self-report depression question and the HC’s DRS detection measure? A secondary objective of this research was to explore the relationships of multiple depression-related outcomes with selected possible predictor variables to indirectly aid in the identification of a possible depressed mood state. Methods: Four datasets were obtained from the interRAI organization to inform this research. Three datasets, which house and concurrently administer both the self-report item and the DRS, were used to determine the best-suited DRS detection threshold through both univariate and bivariate analyses. The validity of the CA’s self-report item was informed through bivariate analyses with the HC’s DRS measure using the phi-correlation and the c statistic from the bivariate logistic regression model. Spearman and point biserial correlations and bivariate logistic regression modeling informed the relationships of the possible predictor variables with the depression-related outcomes. Results: The DRS one-plus threshold was determined to be the cut-point best-suited for the detection of a possible depressed mood state. Several predictor variables proved statistically significant but were not consistent across the three datasets. The CA’s single question did not evidence a strong association with the HC’s DRS measure. Conclusions: According to the resulting significance of the predictor variables, the experience and expression of depression across the three explored samples differ; the results from one sample cannot be generalized to explain the experience of the other samples. The DRS one-plus threshold is supported for the detection of a possible depressed mood state. However, the validity of the single self-report question in comparison to the DRS measure cannot be supported with the study’s results. However, due to recognized study limitations, the overall validity of the measure is not conclusive. Future research directions are recommended.

Aims and objectives To (1) investigate the organisation, provision and practice of oral care in typical UK stroke units; (2) explore stroke survivors', carers' and healthcare professionals' experiences and perceptions about the barriers and facilitators to receiving and undertaking oral care in stroke units. Background Cerebrovascular disease and oral health are major global health concerns. Little is known about the provision, challenges and practice of oral care in the stroke unit setting, and there are currently no evidence-based practice guidelines. Design Cross-sectional survey of 11 stroke units across Greater Manchester and descriptive qualitative study using focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Methods A self-report questionnaire was used to survey 11 stroke units in Greater Manchester. Data were then collected through two focus groups (n = 10) with healthcare professionals and five semi-structured interviews with stroke survivors and carers. Focus group and interview data were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using framework approach. Results Eleven stroke units in Greater Manchester responded to the survey. Stroke survivors and carers identified a lack of oral care practice and enablement by healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals identified a lack of formal training to conduct oral care for stroke patients, inconsistency in the delivery of oral care and no set protocols or use of formal oral assessment tools. Conclusion Oral care post-stroke could be improved by increasing healthcare professionals' awareness, understanding and knowledge of the potential health benefits of oral care post-stroke. Further research is required to develop and evaluate the provision of oral care in stroke care to inform evidence-based education and practice.

Chapter 12 describes patient monitoring in the setting of addiction or addiction risk, and pain management, to include drug testing. The advantages, disadvantages, and types of available testing for drug use are described, with a discussion of their limitations. Body fluids and tissues for sampling include hair, blood, saliva, sweat, and urine; all yield information regarding drug use within unique limitations and at different levels of convenience. The test methodology imposes a need to know respective sensitivities and specificities, particularly in a forensic setting. Breath testing (alcohol) is not within the scope of this chapter. Recommended frequencies of urine testing are addressed. The utility of other forms of monitoring (self-report, collateral sources, PDMP) is assessed in the final section. Two tables are provided, (1) urine drug detection times, and (2) sources of false positive tests in urine immunoassay studies. Supplemental information sources are cited in a text box.

This article discusses the importance of clear and precise conceptualizations of acculturation as well as the need for consistencies in definition, operationalization, and measurement. More specifically, it argues for an expanded acculturation research toolkit that does not rely too heavily on self-report acculturation scales. The article begins with an overview of the state of affairs with respect to acculturation conceptualizations and methods, paying particular attention to the unidimensional, bidimensional, and multidimensional frameworks of psychological acculturation. It then considers ways in which commonly used definitions and methods of acculturation can be used more intelligently. It also describes alternative methods for researchers interested in moving beyond self-report rating scales, a tiered approach to acculturation research, and method-specific health considerations. Finally, it offers some recommendations aimed at helping the field of acculturation and health research move forward.

Ascertaining an individual’s history of alcohol consumption is an important component in the proper treatment of accidental trauma or acute or chronic illness, as well as for matters of public health and safety, legal issues, insurance coverage, and the management of and recovery from hazardous/harmful levels of alcohol consumption. Although self-report of alcohol consumption in both research and clinical settings represents the most common mode of assessment, there is long-standing interest in developing objective measures of alcohol consumption that do not rely on the ability or willingness of a person to truthfully report consumption. Biologic diagnostic tests or biomarkers can provide information on current and past quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption. This chapter discusses and evaluates many of the biomarker candidates that have been investigated and provides insights into future searches for optimal diagnostic tools to provide biologic evidence of duration, quantity, and frequency of individual alcohol consumption. We have included a limited discussion of biomarkers for assessing cannabis use since cannabis and alcohol use many times are a concomitant feature of intoxication.

Mental health conditions are prevalent in primary care and general medical settings. Health care policy organizations recommend routine mental health screening, but the screening tools most often used in medical settings do not meet medical providers’ clinical needs and have had little impact on patient outcomes. The Quick PsychoDiagnostics Panel (QPD Panel) is a computerized, fully automated mental health assessment test designed to meet the specific real-world needs of busy medical providers. It screens for 11 common mental health conditions and provides actionable information for treatment decisions. The QPD Panel is self-administered by patients, typically in the clinic waiting room using a tablet device. Providers immediately receive a computer-generated, chart-ready assessment report. The QPD Panel achieves high physician and patient acceptance in real-world clinical use. This chapter describes the benefits of the QPD Panel in primary and integrated care medical settings and discusses its rationale and development.

This book takes a lofty vision of "recovery" and of "a life in the community" for every adult with a serious mental illness promised by the U.S. President's 2003 New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and shows the reader what is entailed in making this vision a reality. Beginning with the historical context of the recovery movement and its recent emergence on the center stage of mental health policy around the world, the authors then clarify various definitions of mental health recovery and address the most common misconceptions of recovery held by skeptical practitioners and worried families. With this framework in place, the authors suggest fundamental principles for recovery-oriented care, a set of concrete practice guidelines developed in and for the field, a recovery guide model of practice as an alternative to clinical case management, and tools to self-assess the recovery orientation of practices and practitioners. In doing so, this volume represents the first book to go beyond the rhetoric of recovery to its implementation in everyday practice. Much of this work was developed with the State of Connecticut's Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, helping the state to win a #1 ranking in the recent NAMI report card on state mental health authorities. Since initial development of these principles, guidelines, and tools in Connecticut, the authors have become increasingly involved in refining and tailoring this approach for other systems of care around the globe as more and more governments, ministry leaders, system managers, practitioners, and people with serious mental illnesses and their families embrace the need to transform mental health services to promote recovery and community inclusion. If you've wondered what all of the recent to-do has been about with the notion of "recovery" in mental health, this book explains it. In addition, it gives you an insider's view of the challenges and strategies involved in transforming to recovery and a road map to follow on the first few steps down this exciting, promising, and perhaps long overdue path.

The measurement of bilingualism is complex but essential for (psycho)linguistic, cognitive and neural research. In addition to the conventional group comparison approach, namely comparing monolinguals to bilinguals, recent research has adopted continuous or multi-dimensional approaches. The aim of this chapter is to review a series of tools, including self-report usage and proficiency measures used in the literature. These tools were used with samples across the lifespan in North America and Europe. We further examine the aspects of bilingualism extracted from these tools. Finally, we outline the limitations of existing bilingual measurement tools and the need for researchers to justify the choice of each tool. Importantly, we advocate for taking a more nuanced understanding of bilingualism beyond individual usage and consider this experience as fluid, continuous rather than categorical.

AbstractBeing able to argue about the performance of self-adjusting data structures such as splay trees has been a main objective, when Sleator and Tarjan introduced the notion of amortised complexity.Analysing these data structures requires sophisticated potential functions, which typically contain logarithmic expressions. Possibly for these reasons, and despite the recent progress in automated resource analysis, they have so far eluded automation. In this paper, we report on the first fully-automated amortised complexity analysis of self-adjusting data structures. Following earlier work, our analysis is based on potential function templates with unknown coefficients. We make the following contributions: 1) We encode the search for concrete potential function coefficients as an optimisation problem over a suitable constraint system. Our target function steers the search towards coefficients that minimise the inferred amortised complexity. 2) Automation is achieved by using a linear constraint system in conjunction with suitable lemmata schemes that encapsulate the required non-linear facts about the logarithm. We discuss our choices that achieve a scalable analysis. 3) We present our tool $$\mathsf {ATLAS}$$ ATLAS and report on experimental results for splay trees, splay heaps and pairing heaps. We completely automatically infer complexity estimates that match previous results (obtained by sophisticated pen-and-paper proofs), and in some cases even infer better complexity estimates than previously published.

AbstractTo address the challenges originating from changes in the global market and with technological progress, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is adopting more holistic education systems that offer lifelong competence for workers in the twenty-first century. This transition requires integration of complex cognitive and social/interpersonal competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, cultural and diversity awareness, multilingualism, and the use of digital technologies into the traditional educational curricula. However, the transition from traditional to holistic curricula is complicated. Issues include how twenty-first century skills are defined in SSA, how they can be taught, how they can be integrated into curricula, and how they can be assessed. A review of the literature on assessments was first conducted in order to review approaches and tools used to measure twenty-first century skills in SSA. Five assessment approaches were identified: scenario-based, questionnaire, video recording and direct observation, portfolio, and technology-based. Seven tools that met study criteria were examined along five dimensions: purpose, type or form, target population, context, and specific skills, in order to determine their utility for assessment of twenty-first century skills. Findings indicate that five of the seven assessment tools support summative purposes while two support formative assessment. Further to this, two tools were designed for large-scale assessment and three targeted adolescents. In terms of method, scenario-based and self-report were the most common approaches used to collect information on twenty-first century skills in SSA. Notably, the outcomes of scenario-based assessments provided compelling evidence of proficiencies, demonstrating the method’s efficiency in task creation, analysis, and scoring rubrics that provide clear distinctions across performance levels.

AbstractThis chapter will detail how the advent of the internet and smartphones has fundamentally transformed the nature of social support and its effects on quality of life and health. Technological change has altered: (1) The ways in which we assess social support, (2) The perception and effects of social support. First, we will examine how recent technological innovations have allowed for more detailed, objective, and accurate assessments of social support. Digital technology has enabled us to go beyond simple self-report measures to assess social support and quality of life in unprecedented ways. By leveraging big data across several accessible technological platforms, researchers can begin to understand how social support processes unfold in real time and the myriad ways technology can be used to measure meaningful aspects of social support. In the second section, we will discuss how the concept of social support has changed in the age of digital communication. We will focus on how the presence and use of technological devices influences face-to-face interactions, online groups, and family dynamics. Taken together, this chapter will recognize the changes in social assessment afforded by technology and consider several important areas in which technological tools have transformed social support.

Abstract Life satisfaction (LS) is the major component of subjective wellbeing (SWB) and is often referred to as cognitive wellbeing. LS can be defined as a comparison between a person’s ideal life and their actual life, but it can also be defined as a broad appraisal that a person makes of their life as a whole. Both conceptualizations have their weaknesses. The first overestimates humans’ computational capacities and is unable to account for how comparisons are performed mentally. The second is underspecified and does not provide enough detail about the judgmental mechanisms involved in the subjective evaluation of the favorability of one’s life. Despite these limitations, measures of LS are reliable and provide vital information about people’s quality of life. LS items are also stable predictors of a bundle of outcome variables at both the individual and societal levels, such as health, longevity, motivation, investments, and political elections. The humanistic theory of wellbeing (HTW) argues, however, that self-reports of LS are not valid in the sense of measuring what they intend to measure. Self-reported LS does not reflect an unbiased, reflective, and broad report of all the important appraisals individuals make about the quality of their lives. The SWB literature holds LS to represent cognitive wellbeing, even though empirical evidence shows that the concept comprises strong affective cues. The HTW therefore claims that LS is similar to pleasure and other harmony feelings in that it reflects spontaneous good–bad evaluations and that the concept functionally operates to maintain universal needs for stability. But LS is not a feeling state. The cognitive attributes of LS have been specified by Diener as following a three-step procedure. The first is an examination of the conditions in one’s life, the second is a weighting of the importance of these conditions, and the third is an aggregated evaluation of the weighted conditions on a quantified scale running from dissatisfied to satisfied [Diener, E. (2009). Assessing well-being: The collected works of Ed Diener. Springer. (p. 196)]. However, survey participants only spend a few seconds responding to an LS item, which is not consistent with such a complex and time-consuming process. The workload required to calculate one’s life satisfaction according to a set of computation rules is too large for the human brain to carry out. Therefore, the HTW accuses the default version of SWB to fall for an “all things considered” myth. Rather than considering LS as an overall and reflective evaluation carried out as a System 2 process, the HTW suggests that self-reported LS is determined as a System 1 response. A System 1 approach is more consistent with the idea that affective and cognitive elements interact in forming the concept of LS. Another disagreement between mainstream SWB theory and the HTW relates to the functions of LS. Most SWB researchers consider states of high life satisfaction to be approach oriented and concerned with “doing” things. The alternative perspective is that high life satisfaction reflects a mode of “having” rather than “doing.” Since the HTW associates LS with the regulation of stability, it supports the latter view. However, the “having” and “doing” elements of LS are complex. For example, measures of LS correlate with a broad specter of active lifestyles, which speaks against the “having” hypothesis. The last section of this chapter discusses how LS relates to values. An important hypothesis offered by the HTW is that LS is biased toward values that are “spontaneous” and come easily to mind. Accordingly, reflective values tend to escape the evaluative space of an LS judgment. LS should for example be sensitive to gaps between what we want to accomplish and what we actually have accomplished. But empirical studies suggest that only gaps in “spontaneous” values have an impact on LS, while gaps related to “reflective” values leave LS unaffected.

The Webbs and the Mitchells, the two couples who were most successful in establishing a more equitable balance of marriage and career, were committed to rewriting the rules of professional life as well as married life. They founded new types of research organizations and educational institutions, applied research in new ways, and adopted collaborative leadership and cooperative ideals in the organizations they headed. These two-pronged efforts reinforced the values the Webbs and the Mitchells espoused in their work and their domestic lives in ways that strengthened both. Elsie Clews Parsons’s efforts to shape her marriage and affairs in accordance with her feminist beliefs were less successful. She had few opportunities to apply these values in the workplace, although she did try to move her colleagues in that direction. The wives in the more traditional couples -- the Palmers and the Youngs – failed to reconcile the tensions between their work roles and their domestic lives. Unable to break free from conventional gender stereotypes, Alice and Grace deferred to their husbands at home, bowing to their authority rather than asserting their own, and found multiple ways to limit the effects of their revolutionary careers on their roles as wives. What was needed to bring about major and lasting change in the marriages of this early vanguard of dual career couples was a conscious commitment to more equality in the home and the workplace, and a simultaneous assault on both fronts. A similar approach would prove critical in enabling large numbers of middle-class wives to carve out professional careers in the 21st century. It took decades of struggle before that was accomplished. From the 1920s through the 1960s, middle-class working wives and mothers wrestled with the same obstacles and challenges as these early women professionals did. In both the workplace and the home, they were bucking cultural norms that continued to define middle-class womanhood in terms of motherhood, wifehood, and homemaking, and expected women to be supportive and deferential to men. Middle-class wives who combined marriage and a professional career in these decades fell back on the same strategies that the women in this early generation utilized. A widespread assault on the patriarchal underpinnings of middle-class marriages and workplaces did not take hold until late in the 1960s. Fueled in part by Second Wave feminism, women won legislative protections and legal redress against problems that had long been treated as personal and individual, but were newly seen as structural and systemic issues. Intent on having careers, women began flooding into graduate and professional schools, married later, had smaller families, and stayed in the workforce after they had children. These changes have been as revolutionary for men as for women. Women who combine marriage and career are no longer flouting middle-class conventions; they are part of a trend that is reconfiguring middle-class culture and slowly reshaping workplace practices and domestic life. Middle-class women increasingly expect their male spouses and partners to share equally in housekeeping and childrearing, and men are doing more of these tasks than they formerly did. But women still do the bulk of the domestic work, and report that their male partners do less than the men think they do. Progress has been made, but more is needed. The five remarkable women depicted in this book – and the equally remarkable men they married – helped to pave the way for these changes. Alice, Grace, Elsie, Beatrice, and Lucy would be delighted to know that middle-class women have so fully entered public life and are no longer expected to choose between marriage and a career. They would be thrilled to see that men are taking more responsibility for rearing children and managing the home, although they might lament the loss of live-in servants. And they would undoubtedly applaud shifting notions of gender – especially standards of masculinity – that are helping to turn modern-day husbands into supportive partners and companionate spouses for accomplished women who find self-fulfillment in working outside the home.

Affective development occurs in parallel with cognitive development, so affection with colleagues, teachers and content is important for cognition in the classroom. Therefore, the present work aims to report the experience of using the affective diary as an assessment tool in physical education classes. In the year 2023, at the Federal Institute of Education of Maranhão, Presidente Dutra campus, in the 2nd year class of the technical course in the environment integrated into high school, it was proposed that the students write an emotional diary. The class is made up of 34 students, of which 67.7% (n=23) presented their emotional diary at the end of the school year. The purpose was to record and self-evaluate experiences in each class and/or content proposed in physical education classes. The contents covered were: games workshops (electronic, indigenous, motor, cognitive and sensory), dance (collective construction of choreography, June festivals) gymnastics (elements, types, presentations) and sporting events. In addition to recording, students were asked to report their emotions during each practice. The affective diary allows you to create possibilities for building knowledge collectively and can strengthen interpersonal relationships in the school environment. In this way, it was possible to observe, with the production of affective diaries, positive reports regarding the scope of knowledge and strengthening of bonds. Furthermore, there was a learning gain in situations such as defeats in games, lack of structure, equipment and problem solving. The affective diary contributes to critical education, sharing knowledge and reflecting the autonomy of teaching-learning. Thus, the experience with using the affective diary as an assessment tool in physical education classes was satisfactory and it is expected that this work will contribute to new experiences or related studies.

Abstract Whilst cost competitiveness becoming a core value, most organizations are stretched toward further means to having more efficient and productive operations. Measuring the time spent by workers while doing the actual work is key to advance productivity. It helps to reveal waste and find better ways of working with direct impact on efficiency and OPEX. Additional value is generated through improved HSSE, better morale, less errors, and quicker return to service. The time spent by personnel doing the daily maintenance activities called HoTT (Hands on tool time). It is also called wrench time or TOT (time on tools). Three main methods could be used to measure HoTT, Activity Survey, DILO (Day in Life Of) and Self-Reporting. Activity survey is a statistical survey on various maintenance activities. Data points are recorded by observers deployed to random activities. Wrench time accuracy will depend on number of the observations made. The larger the sample size, the more reliable the data would be. The fact that activity survey gives better representation of the studied population, it is considered the most accurate method for HoTT measurement. Furthermore, DILO day in life of offers a simpler approach by focusing on one maintenance activity. The drawback is less accurate HoTT measurement as less samples will be obtained. Self-reporting is another less commonly used method. It is about asking the worker to report his own HoTT. In Oil and Gas, best in class facilities are at 60% - 65% HoTT and industry average is around 30% - 40%. Experts emphasize that boosting HoTT to best practice typically increases productivity by 57 percent. For example, a plant might go from fulfilling 500 work orders per month to 785 work orders per month without adding any new technicians to staff. It is essential to establish a process to measure wrench time, identify waste, generate improvement ideas, and have tracking means to make sure productivity advancement is achieved. In mature organizations where productivity improvement ideas are being realized and sustained, the calculated HoTT would be improving over time. This paper will discuss different methods to measure HoTT, outline a real case study analysis and showcase the benefits of having a well-established HoTT process in any organization.

Abstract While under various banners, Valero Energy Inc. has been a staple in the refining and marketing of products since 1961. Key facilities such as the Montreal East Terminal and the St-Romuald Refinery supply their carriers and customers (resellers and wholesalers) in the regions of Southern Quebec, the Maritimes, and the Greater Ottawa and Toronto areas, with smaller terminals in these areas serving the Northeastern United States market. Guaranteeing that delivery orders are met and critical product is delivered on schedule requires Valero’s terminals to have comprehensive integrity programs in place. Comprehensive programs, which include risk modeling, in-line inspections and tank inspections, to name a few, help to ensure there is no unexpected downtime due to incidents. While ensuring the integrity of any oil and gas pipeline network contains its own challenges, facility or terminal piping does not often contain the typical infrastructure to employ standard technologies. Accordingly, specialty solutions are often required. Such is the case for Valero’s 960-meter, 10inch dock line at the Gaspé Terminal, which is a critical supply link transporting refined products from shipping vessels to the terminal. The technical challenges that needed to be overcome for the inspection of this underground dock line included: • No pig launcher and pig receiver present; dock line not designed for conventional pigging • Dock line only has flow when unloading to ships • In-service operating conditions prohibited conventional ILI tool inspection • Limited space available for equipment to support standard pigging operation • Staging of equipment on the dock would pose additional risks for the environment in the event of loss of containment for any supporting pumping equipment This paper will outline the validation, testing and execution of a self-propelled robotic tethered solution in combination with an ultrasonic wall measurement (UTWM) system capable of navigating the complexities of the Gaspé dock line. The inspection solution outlined in the paper did not require any major modifications to the dock line system, nor did any equipment need to be present on the dock side. The utilization of dedicated crawler units eliminated the requirements for flow or pressure in the dock line to propel the tool during inspection. Overall technical and operations benefits of this solution are: • Accurate and precise feature classification and sizing by quantitative ultrasonic measurement • Two sets of data (from both the inbound and outbound run) with the outbound run providing a further verification for the inbound run • Real-time data analysis and preliminary report on-site, followed by a thoroughly reviewed final report The online self-propelled tethered crawler inspection system contained the actual inspection tool, the drive unit, the umbilical winch and a computer system to communicate with and control the inspection vehicle. The paper will outline in detail the workings of the inspection tool, particularly: • The ridged ring UT sensor unit • The modifications and testing to ensure the system could pass features in the line • The electrically driven propulsion system While the focus of this paper is the deployment of this inspection solution in the Gaspé dock line, it will also compare previous operational experiences with running a free-swimming tool. Overall, the paper will outline not only how this solution better ensured the integrity of the line itself, but also how its execution reduced safety and environmental risks, while still collecting indispensable, high-quality in-line inspection (ILI) data.

Abstract While failure analyses in the archival literature report thrust collar misalignment as a major cause of collapse in oil lubricated thrust bearings, a self-equalizing tilting pad thrust bearing (TPTB) improves operation reliability by adjusting its pads to account for thrust collar tilt. The paper describes a kinematics model for the equalizing mechanism integrated into an existing thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis tool to deliver load performance predictions for self-equalizing TPTBs. The analysis considers the actual leveling plates geometric model as obtained from a solids modeling commercial software and accounts for the sliding friction forces acting at the contact points of the leveling plates and the rolling friction at their pivots. Further, a Hertz contact analysis model uses the predicted forces to deliver a peak pressure and deformation over the contact area between the leveling plates. Next, the paper presents predictions for an example self-equalizing TPTB operating with a thrust collar static misalignment φ = 0.01°. The bearing 126 mm in outer diameter has six pads, operates at 4 krpm (26 m/s max. surface speed) and under a specific load/pad ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 MPa. Compared to a non-equalizing TPTB, a self-equalizing TPTB operates with up to 50% larger minimum film thickness and about ½ largest elastic deformation. Friction forces acting at the contact points of the leveling plates show a significant effect on the performance of the pad leveling system as they reduce the film clearance and increase a pad peak pressure. Predictions from the Hertz contact analysis agree with those from a commercial finite element analysis tool and show a significantly large peak pressure at the contact points of the leveling plates (> 0.9 GPa) when the bearing supports a 3 MPa/pad specific load. The paper stresses the importance of conducting a comprehensive multiple-pad analysis to accurately evaluate the performance and reliable operation of self-equalizing TPTBs.

Transversal competences have been receiving an increasing attention in educational research and practice over the last decades. As a part of a wider project for assessment of students’ competences in higher education, a group of experts developed a model of transversal competences for students, consisting of civic, digital, entrepreneurial, global, innovation, and research competences (each with corresponding sub-competences and facets), based on the analysis of theory and previous research. In this paper, we present an assessment tool that was developed and tested for measurement of the competences in this model. The final version of the assessment tool is a self-report survey with 292 behavioural indicators that are evaluated on a 7-point Likert-type scale estimating how characteristic each indicator is of the respondent’s typical behaviour. The initial pool of behavioural indicators was created by the same group of experts based on the analysis of previous research and best practice examples in transversal competence assessment. From this pool, an initial version of the survey with 440 indicators was created and administered to 686 respondents from 8 study domains representing all study levels. Factor analysis of responses revealed a six-factor structure corresponding to the initial theoretical competence model. After further psychometric analysis, the final version of the assessment tool was formulated. Each of the six competences is further divided into 3–5 sub-competences, with each sub-competence consisting of 2–5 facets. Each facet is measured with multiple behavioural indicators describing basic, intermediate and advanced level of the respective competence. The results showed good construct validity of the tool, with the expected competence differences appearing between different study levels, and the expected relations emerging between the competence indicators and average grades. Practical applications and possibilities for further development of the assessment tool are discussed.

This guidance document is part of the FGM Data Hub’s effort to address challenges encountered by programme implementers in measuring change (specifically, unstandardised measurement indicators and complex surveys) and the effect of social desirability in the context of female genital mutilation (FGM). The guidance focuses on how to use a tool developed by the FGM Data Hub to measure social attitudes toward FGM. The process leading to the development of this guidance involved piloting the tool—a simple opinion poll survey using a combination of direct (self-report) and indirect (vignettes about others) questioning methodologies to generate robust data to measure public views on FGM.

This report summarizes the results of the Office of Evaluation and Oversight's (OVE) annual validation of the self-assessments of project performance and results completed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and IDB Invest in 2019-2020. The IDB and IDB Invest have systems in place to measure the development effectiveness of their operations. These systems use a number of instruments to assess projects at the design, implementation, and completion phases. The design-phase assessment uses a “Development Effectiveness Matrix” (DEM) for sovereign guaranteed (SG) operations. The effectiveness of non-sovereign guaranteed (NSG) operations is measured with a “Development Effectiveness Learning, Tracking, and Assessment tool” (DELTA). Implementation-phase assessments measure SG operations with “Project Monitoring Reports,” while NSG operations are assessed with “Project Supervision Reports.” Upon completion, SG projects are self-evaluated with “Project Completion Reports,” or PCRs. NSG operations, use “Expanded Supervision Reports,” or XSRs when they reach early operation maturity (EOM). OVE validates Managements self-evaluations (PCRs and XSRs) and assigns a final project performance rating to each operation. As part of the 2020 validation cycle, OVE reviewed PCRs for 63 operations, 62 with operational closure (CO fully justified) in 2018 and one in 2013. XSRs were reviewed for 36 IDB Invest operations that had reached early operating maturity (EOM) in 2018.

It is widely accepted that schools and other settings catering to youth can play an essential role in offering education in life skills and character. However, there exists a broad array of potential targets for such programs, suggesting the need for guidance on which targets are most likely to result in demonstrable and valuable results. This report attempts to integrate a broad literature addressing the universe of targets for skills development programs for youth. After identifying a set of 30 candidate skills to investigate further, research literature was reviewed to evaluate each skill on three dimensions. Measurability had to do with the extent to which adequate measurement tools were available for evaluating skill level, with emphasis on those tools specifically used for younger populations and available in multiple languages, particularly in Spanish. Malleability had to do with the extent to which there is evidence that interventions have the potential to modify skill level, with emphasis on those that have been extensively evaluated through randomized controlled trials. Finally, meaningfulness had to do with the extent to which evidence exists demonstrating that the higher levels of skill can result in consequential outcomes. Based on these criteria, 10 skills were selected for further review as having the most compelling evidence to date that they are life skills that matter: Mindfulness, Empathy and compassion, Self-efficacy/ Self-determination, Problem solving, Critical thinking, Goal orientation and goal completion, Resilience/Stress resistance, Self-awareness, Purposefulness, and Self-regulation/Self-control/Emotion regulation. The evidence for each is summarized. We finish with a review of key issues to consider in the design, implementation, and evaluation of life skills that matter.

This report summarizes the 2023 results of the Office of Evaluation and Oversight's (OVE's) annual review of project performance at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group. Every year, IDB Group Management prepares self-evaluations on the final results of its operations. These are called Project Completion Reports (PCRs) at the IDB and Expanded Supervision Reports (XSRs) at IDB Invest. PCRs and XSRs are then validated by OVE to ensure that they are substantiated by evidence and are prepared in accordance with their respective guidelines. Self-evaluations are intended to serve as accountability and learning tools. The IDB Group's project evaluation methodology is objectives-based. Project performance is rated based on four core criteria: (i) relevance of the project's goals and design, (ii) effectiveness or the degree to which the project achieved the specific objectives for which it was approved, (iii) efficiency with which the objectives were achieved, and (iv) sustainability of the results achieved. Each project then receives an overall outcome rating, calculated as a weighted average of the core criteria ratings, where effectiveness has the highest weight. In addition, two noncore criteria are rated for IDB operations (Bank performance and borrower performance), while three are rated for IDB Invest operations (additionality, investment profitability, and work quality). OVE also rates the quality of the self-evaluation reports by Management. The overall outcome is rated on a six-point scale, while core criteria, noncore criteria, and PCR and XSR quality are rated on a four-point scale. For simplicity, this report groups ratings into “positive” and “negative,” where positive corresponds to the top half ratings in the scale, and negative to the bottom half.

It has long been known that all ultrasonic flow meters, especially those that exploit multiple paths to achieve higher accuracies, are capable of extensive self-diagnosis. However, each manufacturer of the technology has tended to develop diagnostic tools peculiar to his particular device. This has led to a confusing mix of offerings that are not transportable between meters, and whose interpretations are not always consistent. This report addresses: Verification of the Phase 1 models against available field data; Implementation of field-tested methods offered by PRCI users; Trending the diagnostics with time to detect changes; Establishing the significance of the changes (magnitude of error); Deciding if the changes require intervention (maintenance, re-calibration); Tuning of the Phase 1 models based on this experience; Verification of the models using experimental testing.
