This study investigates the possibility that the characteristics of assessment tools may influence the results of individual competency evaluations. A self-report survey consisting of 28 items was developed to assess core competencies and was compared with the results obtained from K-CESA’s performance-based and self-report assessments. The study involved 117 undergraduate students from S University who participated in the K-CESA assessment. Correlation analysis, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and linear regression models were applied to examine the relationships and predictive accuracy between the self-report survey results and the K-CESA outcomes. The correlation analysis revealed that, even when assessing the same competencies, the relationship between the performance-based evaluation results from K-CESA and the self-report survey results developed in this study was very weak. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between the self-report evaluation results from K-CESA and the self-report survey results from this study, with strong predictive accuracy. This indicates that even with fewer items, the self-report evaluation results from K-CESA can be effectively predicted. These findings highlight the importance of assessment methods in determining competency evaluation results. Furthermore, the study provides practical implications by proposing directions to reduce discrepancies between self-report measures widely used in education and actual performance, thereby improving the validity of competency assessment tools.

In a recent study on food-evoked emotions, we observed that people often misunderstood the currently available affective self-report tools. We, therefore, developed a new intuitive and language-independent self-report instrument called the EmojiGrid: a rectangular response grid labeled with facial icons (emoji) that express different degrees of valence and arousal. We found that participants intuitively and reliably reported their affective appraisal of food by clicking on the EmojiGrid, even without verbal instructions. In this study, we investigated whether the EmojiGrid can also serve as a tool to assess one’s own (experienced) emotions and perceived emotions of others. In the first experiment, participants (N = 90) used the EmojiGrid to report their own emotions, evoked by affective images from a database with corresponding normative ratings (obtained with a 9-point self-assessment mannikin scale). In the second experiment, participants (N = 61) used the EmojiGrid to report the perceived emotional state of persons shown in different affective situations, in pictures from a database with corresponding normative ratings (obtained with a 7-point Likert scale). For both experiments, the affective (valence and arousal) ratings obtained with the EmojiGrid show excellent agreement with the data provided in the literature (intraclass correlations of at least 0.90). Also, the relation between valence and arousal shows the classic U-shape at the group level. Thus, the EmojiGrid appears to be a useful graphical self-report instrument for the assessment of evoked and perceived emotions.

Extension has a role to play in workforce development by preparing the next generation to be successful communicators. While Extension 4-H youth programs have contributed to public speaking development since their inception, there has not been a validated instrument to assess young people’s public speaking self-efficacy. We utilized an iterative-scale development process to develop, test, and refine such a tool. We hope youth development professionals will consider using the Youth Public Speaking Self-Efficacy (PSSE) survey tool to measure and report youth’s PSSE skills, along with the sources influencing these skills, to help with program planning, implementation, and professional development activities.

Background In recent times, the efforts to profile the language characteristics of bilinguals have been extended from mere documentation of proficiency in each language to the determination of language dominance that captures both proficiency and usage (i.e., frequency & contexts) of each language. In multilingual countries, individuals are immersed in various languages in different contexts. With the broader intention to improve the linguistic profiling of bilinguals in countries with similar characteristics, we aimed to adapt and validate the Self-report classification tool in Indian Kannada-English bilinguals. Methods A group of 88 adult Kannada-English bilingual participants self-rated their language proficiency. We measured their language dominance with the adapted tool. Finally, to objectively measure their language abilities, we used the short version of the Bilingual Aphasia Test. Results Discriminant analysis of the ratings showed that the self-report classification tool accurately classified our participants into three groups based on language dominance. Both the self-rating and the objective measure of language proficiency supported the (dominance) classifications by the adapted tool. Conclusion Findings show that the adapted self-report classification tool is valid for determining language dominance in Kannada-English bilinguals. Further, the current study shows that this tool is adaptable to novel bilingual language dyads.

Abstract Given the complex interplay of ethical, clinical, and legal factors, evaluating capacities in older adults is an important competency for geropsychologists. However, the amount of quality of training in this area varies, and geropsychology trainees report less confidence in their capacity evaluation skills. To date, only the Pikes Peak Self-Assessment Tool includes items measuring competency and growth in decisional capacity evaluations. However, it is a broad self-report measure assessing general geropsychology competencies. We developed a performance-based measure of decision-making capacity evaluations, the “Capacity Assessment Training and Competency Evaluation Tool (CATCET).” Using the ABA/APA Assessment of Older Adults with Diminished Capacity as a guide, expert panels created two clinical cases across 5 capacity domains. This presentation will discuss the creation of the CATCET, its application as a training and evaluation tool, and initial performance data among psychology graduate students, intern, and fellows across settings.

This study shed light on the development of self-report scale for the personal traits of gifted students in Algerian secondary school. It used the style of self-report which is based on the phenomenological trend. The dimensions of this scale were determined in the following traits: motivation, emotional stability, positive self-esteem, internal control, and deep learning style. In order to extract the psychometric properties of the scale, a scale of (62) items was applied on (54) distinguished students of the secondary level. After the statistical analysis of these items, (45) distinct items were selected to create the tool, which was also checked for its validity using the split half method where the correlation coefficient of the scale validity was (0.881). As for the reliability of the tool, the alpha coefficient rate of the internal consistency was (0.873). In conclusion, these results are satisfactory for considering this scale as a valid tool to explore gifted students. Keywords: Scale, Self-report, The gifted, Traits, Students.

ObjectiveWe previously developed the paper-based Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool (SSPedi) designed for paediatric cancer symptom screening. Objectives were to evaluate and refine the electronic mobile application (app) of SSPedi using the opinions of children with cancer.MethodsParticipants were children 8–18 years of age with cancer. Participants completed electronic SSPedi on their own and then responded to semistructured questions to determine whether they found electronic SSPedi easy or difficult to complete and understand, understood and liked the app features (audio and animation), and understood previously difficult to understand concepts with the introduction of a help menu. After each group of 10 children, responses were reviewed to determine whether modifications were required.Results20 children evaluated electronic SSPedi. None found electronic SSPedi difficult to complete or understand. All children understood the app features and each of the 4 more difficult to understand concepts after using the help menu. 19 of 20 children thought the app was a good way to communicate with doctors and nurses.ConclusionsWe finalised an electronic version of SSPedi that is easy to use and understand with features specifically designed to facilitate child self-report. Future work will evaluate the psychometric properties of electronic SSPedi.

The current case study exemplifies the value of integrating an attachment self-report tool measuring attachment orientation with the Rorschach. This process is presented by means of a case study that demonstrates the usefulness of the Rorschach when clients have difficulties self-disclose their attachment insecurity. The Rorschach clarified the clinical picture of the client and guided the therapist in finding the road to the suffering client. Only after one year of therapy the client’s attachment questionnaire scores and her Rorschach converged.

BACKGROUND: Mismanagement of fatigue and playing load have been consistently identified as risk factors for playing-related pain and injuries. Studies in sport demonstrate that fatigue management strategies can predict and prevent overuse syndromes and related injuries through consistent assessment of playing load and physical/psychological stress. Self-report strategies show particular responsiveness to both the short and long-term impacts of training. No equivalent fatigue management strategies exist for musicians. Establish key items and feasibility parameters to inform the development of a self-report fatigue management tool for musicians. METHODS: A working party of international experts in musicians’ medicine was invited to complete a two-phase Delphi survey. In Phase I, working party members rated established items from sport (REST-Q subscales with demonstrated responsiveness to both acute and chronic training stresses) with respect to relevance and prospective utility for musicians. Members could also propose additional items and were asked to indicate a maximum feasible questionnaire length. In Phase II, working party members ranked top performing items from Phase I. Consensus best items were determined based on Phase II rankings. RESULTS: A 28-member working party was assembled (15 clinicians, 13 researchers). Of 20 researcher proposed items and 58 working party proposed items, 5 items met consensus criteria: I had pain; I had to play too much; I felt physically fit; I did not get enough sleep; I recovered well physically. A strong majority (89%) of working party members indicated that regular use of a fatigue questionnaire with up to 10 items is feasible. CONCLUSIONS: Key questionnaire items and feasibility parameters for a novel fatigue management tool for musicians are established. Future research in musicians is needed to validate study results and this novel fatigue management tool.

SummaryAim – The widespread diffusion of sleep disorders (in particular, insomnia) in the general population and the presence of sleep complaints in many mental disorders and physical illnesses justifies an interest in their assessment and treatment, still today commonly underestimated. This study aims to describe the inexpensive and relatively easy-to-use self-report measures of sleep available in literature. Method – A literature search was conducted throughout the electronic literature database “Pubmed”, selecting the pertinent articles published up to December 2006. Results – The recovered material takes the following fields into account: aspect of sleep measured, statistical population, structure, time frame, sub-scales and psychometric properties. International literature presents somewhat heterogeneous sleep self-evaluation tools, which mainly measure sleep quality and the specific causes of sleep interference. As for the Italian context, the recovered material is somewhat modest, taking into account the number of publications. Conclusions – the critical points met in this review have led us to underline the characteristics of a hypothetical tool for sleep assessment to include in routine diagnoses.Declaration of Interest: The authors have received no fees or other financial support potentially in conflict of interest with this scientific work.

Purpose To propose a hearing health care tool kit, for use in primary care, that includes a new, comprehensive, and easy-to-administer self-report tool, namely, the Screening for Otologic Functional Impairments (SOFI). The target population for the proposed tool kit includes older adults with multimorbidity who are (a) at risk for hearing-related functional deficits and/or (b) likely to benefit from targeted audiologic interventions designed to optimize function, support independence, maximize safety, and cultivate self-sufficiency and social connectedness (American Academy of Nursing's Expert Panel on Acute and Critical Care, 2012). Method Twenty-nine older adults with varying levels of hearing impairment drawn from 2 ear, nose, and throat clinics and 1 university clinic underwent hearing testing and completed a series of self-report tools designed to assess otologic function and depression. All of the participants completed the SOFI on 2 occasions. Results The SOFI has high reliability and validity and the potential for identifying older adults requiring audiologic intervention. Conclusion The proposed tool kit, for use in primary care, includes several components that are integral to help-seeking behavior. The goal is to identify older adults with multimorbidity who are at risk for otologic conditions, that, once identified and treated, may help promote older adults' quality of care and life.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating dermatologic condition presenting with recurrent abscesses. While there are multiple scales to determine HS severity, none are designed for self-administration. A validated severity self-assessment tool may facilitate survey research and improve communication by allowing patients to objectively report their HS severity between clinic visits. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess a self-administered HS measure. Methods: An HS self-assessment tool (HSSA) with 10 photographs of different Hurley stages was developed. The tool was administered to patients diagnosed with HS who visited the Wake Forest Baptist Health dermatology clinic over a span of 2 months. Physician-administered Hurley stage was recorded to determine criterion validity. To assess test-retest reliability of the measure, patients completed the HSSA again at least 30 minutes after the first completion. Results: Twenty-four patients completed the measure, and 20 of these patients completed it twice. Agreement between physician-determined Hurley stage and self-determined Hurley stage was 66.7% with a weighted kappa of 0.57 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.30-0.84). The weighted kappa for agreement between patients’ initial and second completion of the HSSA was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.64-0.99). Conclusions: The self-administered measure provides moderate agreement with physician-determined Hurley stage and good test-retest reliability.

Background:Sedentary behavior is continuing to emerge as an important target for health promotion. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of a self-report use of time recall tool, the Multimedia Activity Recall for Children and Adults (MARCA) in estimating time spent sitting/lying, compared with a device-based measure.Methods:Fifty-eight participants (48% female, [mean ± standard deviation] 28 ± 7.4 years of age, 23.9 ± 3.05 kg/m2) wore an activPAL device for 24-h and the following day completed the MARCA. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were used to analyze convergent validity of the adult MARCA compared with activPAL estimates of total sitting/lying time. Agreement was examined using Bland-Altman plots. Results:According to activPAL estimates, participants spent 10.4 hr/day [standard deviation (SD) = 2.06] sitting or lying down while awake. The correlation between MARCA and activPAL estimates of total sit/lie time was r = .77 (95% confidence interval = 0.64–0.86; P < .001). Bland-Altman analyses revealed a mean bias of +0.59 hr/day with moderately wide limits of agreement (–2.35 hr to +3.53 hr/day).Conclusions:This study found a moderate to strong agreement between the adult MARCA and the activPAL, suggesting that the MARCA is an appropriate tool for the measurement of time spent sitting or lying down in an adult population.

Self-report measures are used to study the degree of victimisation in children that have experienced violence. Very little methodological attention is, however, paid to development of these measures. In this article, we will analyse parents’ free-text comments in response to a self-report survey of their own violent behaviour towards their children. Themes presented by parents concerning violence against children as a phenomenon will be analysed and methodological input of these free-text comments in a self-report survey will be examined. Analysis is based on survey data collected in Finland in 2011 (N = 3170) including 2047 free-text comments. Based on the thematic analysis of those comments, four themes were phrased: making sense of the responses, defining violence, children and violence in society and experiencing exclusion. Parents’ comments with respect to these themes reflected the complexity of what actually constitutes violence against children. Analysis also showed that free-text comments are a valuable and ethically sound tool for developing the self-report measure.

BackgroundThere is a paucity of valid, brief instruments for the assessment of lifetime major depressive disorder (MDD) that can be used in, for example, large-scale genomics, imaging or biomarker studies on depression. We developed the LIfetime Depression Assessment Self-report (LIDAS), which assesses lifetime MDD diagnosis according to DSM criteria, and is largely based on the widely used Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Here, we tested the feasibility and determined the sensitivity and specificity for measuring lifetime MDD with this new questionnaire, with a regular CIDI as reference.MethodSensitivity and specificity analyses of the online lifetime MDD questionnaire were performed in adults with (n = 177) and without (n = 87) lifetime MDD according to regular index CIDIs, selected from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) and Netherlands Twin Register (NTR). Feasibility was tested in an additional non-selective, population-based sample of NTR participants (n = 245).ResultsOf the 753 invited persons, 509 (68%) completed the LIDAS, of which 419 (82%) did this online. User-friendliness of the instrument was rated high. Median completion time was 6.2 min. Sensitivity and specificity for lifetime MDD were 85% [95% confidence interval (CI) 80–91%] and 80% (95% CI 72–89%), respectively. This LIDAS instrument gave a lifetime MDD prevalence of 20.8% in the population-based sample.ConclusionsMeasuring lifetime MDD with an online instrument was feasible. Sensitivity and specificity were adequate. The instrument gave a prevalence of lifetime MDD in line with reported population prevalences. LIDAS is a promising tool for rapid determination of lifetime MDD status in large samples, such as needed for genomics studies.

Morning report (MR) is an important daily activity in the department of internal medicine and it is the most important educational activity in the residency training program. Same is true for any hospital that tends to promote their service through continuous medical education(CME). There is increasing demand to practice medicine which is evidencebased and medical education is no exception. Evidencebased, self-directed, learner-centered education proven to be more effective method of learning than the traditional method for the medical residents and thereby more and more emphasis placed on such curricula in postgraduate medical education. The current standing on this issue reviewed to increase our awareness and improvement of MR in the era of Evidence-Based Medicine(EBM). Abstract How do we know whether a refugee household is self-reliant if this is not measured? Although self-reliance has been promoted as a critical assistance strategy for refugees in recent years, there have been limited attempts to rigorously measure the concept. This field report introduces a new measurement tool to assess the movement toward self-reliance among refugee households. The development and utility of a tool to measure self-reliance are described using the pilot studies conducted in Ecuador, Egypt and Lebanon over a 9- to 18-month period. This report utilized unique panel data from 167 refugee households in Egypt and 94 households in Ecuador. The panel data was collected at two points in time (baseline and endline) using paper and pencil or Open Data Kit forms on tablets during face-to-face interviews. This panel group was used to perform the change analysis to examine the movement of households along a self-reliance continuum. Findings show that, overall, 59.8% of households in Ecuador and 64.7% of households in Egypt moved upward in composite score in self-reliance while less than 30% of households regressed in both countries. Further examination is needed to refine and evaluate the tool. The results provide an important starting point and insights into measuring self-reliance using simple indicators and an opportunity to reframe assistance around self-reliance, neither of which had previously been a focus of refugee assistance or relevant literature. It is believed that this methodology will be of use to academics and practitioners seeking to study refugee self-reliance around the world.

Purpose This article reports on the development of a self-report tool—the Chinese Hearing Aid Outcomes Questionnaire (CHAOQ)—to evaluate hearing aid outcomes among Chinese speakers. Method There were 4 phases to construct the CHAOQ and evaluate its psychometric properties. First, items were selected to evaluate a range of culturally relevant outcomes. These procedures provided evidence for face and content validity. Second, items with inappropriate psychometric properties were eliminated. Items related to listening performance were subjected to exploratory factor analysis to identify the factor structure, which was later confirmed via a confirmatory factor analysis in Phase III. These procedures also ensured content and discriminant validity. Internal consistency reliability was evaluated, and normative data were obtained. Finally, test–retest reliability was evaluated, and construct validity was established by comparing results with corresponding items from the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids. Results The final 26-item CHAOQ contains (a) 3 scales evaluating speech understanding in situations in which communication is relatively more difficult or easy or includes reduced listening cues; (b) a scale evaluating listening comfort; (c) a scale measuring negative responses; and (d) an item measuring overall satisfaction. Conclusion The CHAOQ possesses good reliability and validity.

While tipped labor is common in the United States, it presents potential issues for employers unable to demonstrate how tipped workers use their time, thus violating the Fair Labor Standards Act and attracting lawsuits. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, if tipped employees spend more than 20% of their workweek completing non-tipped tasks (e.g., cleaning, stocking), then they are eligible for the Federal minimum wage ($7.25 in 2018) for the hours beyond 20%, rather than the minimum wage for tipped employees ($2.13 in 2018). Traditionally, employers have used self-report data or observers to determine time use, but these are problematic given self-report bias and the Hawthorne effect. In response, we conducted a study using security cameras to document employee time use in a sample of employees at a large chain restaurant. We found that the sample did not violate the 20% rule. Furthermore, we demonstrated an alternative method to study time use with technology most service-based companies already have.

Abstract Background Time constraints limit the use of measurement-based approaches in the routine clinical management of schizophrenia. Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) uses computational algorithms (item response theory - IRT) to match individual subjects with only the most relevant questions for them, reducing administration time and increasing measurement efficiency and scalability. This study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the newly developed CAT-Psychosis battery, both self-administered and rater-administered versions. Methods Patients rated themselves with the self-administered CAT-Psychosis which yields a current psychotic severity score. The CAT-Psychosis is based on a multidimensional extension of traditional IRT-based CAT that is suitable for complex traits and disorders such as psychosis. Two different raters independently conducted the rater-administered CAT-Psychosis to test inter-rater reliability (IRR). The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was administered to test convergent validity. Subjects were re-tested within 7 days to assess test-retest reliability. Generalized linear mixed models and Pearson product moment correlation coefficients were used to test for correlations between individual ratings and average CAT-Psychosis severity scores respectively and the BPRS. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used to test for reliability. Generalized linear and non-linear (logistic) mixed models were used to estimate diagnostic discrimination capacity (lifetime ratings) and to estimate diagnostic sensitivity, specificity and area under the ROC curve with 10-fold cross validation. Results 135 subjects with psychosis and 25 healthy controls were included in the study. Mean age of the sample was 33.1 years, standard deviation (SD)=12.2years; 62% were males. No significant differences were detected between groups (p=0.9064 and p=0.2684 respectively). Mean length of assessment was 7 minutes and 9 seconds (SD: 5:04min) for the clinician-administered version and 1 minute and 49 seconds (SD: 1:35min) for the self-administered version, averaging 11.4 and 12.6 questions each. Convergent validity against BPRS was moderate for both rater-administered (r=0.65 (0.55–0.73); Marginal Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MMLE)=0.052, Standard Error (SE)=0.005, p<0.00001) and self-administered (r=0.66; MMLE=0.057, SE=0.005, p<0.00001) versions. Clinician version’s IRR was strong (ICC=0.67 (Confidence Interval (CI): 0.51–0.80)), and test-retest reliability was strong for both self-report (ICC=0.83 (CI: 0.76–0.87) and clinician (ICC=0.87 (CI: 0.75–0.94) version. The CAT-Psychosis clinician version was able to discriminate psychosis vs. healthy controls (Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC)=0.96 (CI: 0.90–0.97)). CAT-Psychosis self-report yielded similar results (AUC= 0.85 (CI: 0.77–0.88)). Discussion CAT-Psychosis provides valid severity ratings that mirror BPRS total scores, even as a self-report, yielding a dramatic reduction in administration time, while maintaining reliable psychometric properties. Furthermore, CAT-Psychosis, both clinician and self-report versions, is able to reliably discriminate psychotic patients based on a lifetime diagnosis from healthy controls after a brief assessment of current symptomatology.

AbstractObjectiveTo analyze the validity of the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT) in a large. diverse population.DesignA cross-sectional descriptive study.SettingAcademic tertiary pain management center.SubjectsA total of 225 consecutive new patients, aged 18 years or older.MethodsData collection included demographics, ORT scores, aberrant behaviors, pain intensity scores, opioid type and dose, smoking status, employment, and marital status.ResultsIn this population, we were not able to replicate the findings of the initial ORT study. Self-report was no better than chance in predicting those who would have an opioid aberrant behavior. The ORT risk variables did not predict aberrant behaviors in either gender group. There was significant disparity in the scores between self-reported ORT and the ORT supplemented with medical record data (enhanced ORT). Using the enhanced ORT, high-risk patients were 2.5 times more likely to have an aberrant behavior than the low-risk group. The only risk variable associated with aberrant behavior was personal history of prescription drug misuse.ConclusionsThe self-report ORT was not a valid test for the prediction of future aberrant behaviors in this academic pain management population. The original risk categories (low, medium, high) were not supported in the either the self-reported version or the enhanced version; however, the enhanced data were able to differentiate between high- and low-risk patients. Unfortunately, without technological automation, the enhanced ORT suffers from practical limitations. The self-report ORT may not be a valid tool in current pain populations; however, modification into a binary (high/low) score system needs further study.
