Commercial quality cut-roses were produced in a single-stem production system from single node cuttings. A significant advantage to single-stem rose production is that specific environments can be used for specific developmental stages of rose growth. In stage 1 (propagation), cuttings were treated with a 5-second dip in 500 ppm IBA/250 ppm NAA solution, placed in growing media in 8-cm pots, and placed under intermittent mist (5 second every 5 minutes) with growing medium temperature of 35°C. In stage 2 (axillary budbreak and stem development to visible pea size flower bud), rooted cuttings moved to benches (200 stems/m2) in a greenhouse at 14 to 16°C night, and plants received 12 hours supplemental light at 80 to 100 mol·m–2s–1. In stage 3 (stem elongation and flower bud development), small rose plants (30 to 35 cm tall with a pea-size flower bud) were moved to 100 stems/m2 in a greenhouse at 14 to 16°C night with ambient light. Through seven sequential crops of rose cuttings grown from Feb. through May 1995, rooting required a mean of 16 days, flower buds were visible in 42 days, and flower harvest required a mean of 58 days. Accumulated radiation and average temperatures through the spring had significant effects on the number of days in each developmental stage of rose growth.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to identify, design and apply a method for operational production planning. The purpose of the method is that it takes into account the respective demand patterns of the articles, which determines the choice of calculation model and that the method also takes into account the production capacity limitation set. The result can be applied as a basis for decision-making for small and medium-sized manufacturing companies that are facing an expansion. Objective: The following research question was the main objective of this study.How would an appropriate operational planning method be shaped according to the specific characteristics of the products and their diverse demand patterns in small and medium-sized manufacturing companies with capacity limiters? Method: The study is a qualitative one-case study with quantitative elements. The empirical data used in the study was collected through unstructured and semi-structured interviews where the snowball effect has been applied and also observations have been performed. Results: The study has enabled a higher degree of utilization of the capacity limitation set, by developing standardized block sizes. The first step was to identify demand patterns into which the studied articles could be categorized. The demand pattern was applied in order to be able to apply the correct calculation model to the correct article. The calculation model was then standardized by applying PoT to be able to obtain standardized block sizes. The method was illustrated in a Gantt chart to demonstrate its usefulness.
Syfte: Studiens syfte är att identifiera, utforma och applicera en metod för operativ produktionsplanering. Ändamålet med metoden är att den tar hänsyn till artiklarnas respektive efterfrågemönster vilket avgör valet av beräkningsmodell samt att metoden tar även hänsyn till produktionens kapacitetsbegränsning ställare. Resultatet kan appliceras som beslutsunderlag för små samt medelstora tillverkande företag som står inför en expansion. Forskningsfråga: Följande forskningsfråga var objektet för denna studie. Hur skulle en lämplig operativ planering formas utefter artiklarnas specifika egenskaper och deras olikartade efterfrågemönster hos små och medelstora tillverkande företag med kapacitetsbegränsningen ställare? Metod: Studien är en kvalitativ en-fallstudie med kvantitativa inslag. Den empiriska data som använts i studie än insamlad genom ostrukturerade samt semistrukturerade intervjuer där snöbollseffekten tillämpats och även observationer har utförts. Resultat: Studien har möjliggjort en högre utnyttjandegrad av kapacitetsbegränsningen ställare, genom att framta standardiserade blockstorlekar. Första steget var att identifiera efterfrågemönster som de studerade artiklarna kunnat kategoriseras in i. Efterfrågemönstret har tillämpats för att kunna använda rätt beräkningsmodell på rätt artikel. Beräkningsmodellen standardiserades därefter genom tillämpning av PoT för att kunna erhålla standardiserade blockstorlekar. Metoden illustrerades i ett Gantt-schema för att påvisa dess användbarhet.

Microbial spoilage has been reported in various food products and this has led to increased food, fruit and beverage losses, thereby threatening economic growth, food safety and security. Furthermore, statistics have shown that more than 30% of agricultural produce in developing countries, mostly in Africa, is lost owing to microbial spoilage. Beverages, food and fruits are predominant contributors to the South African export market. In recent years, contamination of these products resulting in spoilage has been a problem, although partial spoilage control has been achieved using chemical preservatives such as dimethyl dicarbonate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and sulphur dioxide (SO2). However, prolonged exposure to these chemical preservatives can cause human health problems such as skin and/or eyesight damage, muscle and stomach pain, cardiovascular disease and the impairment of brain function. To mitigate such health concerns, biologically benign alternatives are deemed suitable, providing the rationale for this study.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) uses quantum tunneling effect to study the surfaces of materials on an atomic scale. Since the probe of the microscope is on the order of nanometers away from the surface, the device is prone to noises due to vibrations from the surroundings. To minimize the random noises and floor vibrations, passive vibration isolation is a commonly used technique due to its low cost and simpler design compared to active vibration isolation, especially when the entire vibration isolation system (VIS) stays inside an Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) environment. This research aims to analyze and build a single-stage passive VIS for an STM. The VIS consists of a mass-spring system staying inside an aluminum hollow tube. The mass-spring system is comprised of a circular copper stage suspended by a combination of six extension springs, and the STM stays on top of the copper stage. Magnetic damping with neodymium magnets, which induces eddy currents in the copper conductor, is the primary damping method to reduce the vibrations transferred to the mass-spring system. FEMM and MATLAB® are used to model magnetic flux density and damping coefficients from eddy current effect, which will help determine the necessary damping ratios for the VIS. Viton, which demonstrates a high compatibility with vacuum environments, will also serve as a great damping material between joints and contacts for the housing tube. Viton will be modeled as a Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic material whose material parameters are previous studied, and Abaqus will be used as a Finite Element Analysis software to study the Viton gaskets’ natural frequencies. The natural frequencies of the aluminum hollow tube will also be investigated through Abaqus.

A single-phase grid connected transformerless photovoltaic (PV) inverter for residential application is presented. The inverter is derived from a boost cascaded with buck converter along with a line frequency unfolding circuit. Due to its novel operating modes, high efficiency can be achieved because there is only one switch operating at high frequency at a time, and the converter allows the use of power MOSFET and ultra-fast reverse recovery diode. This dissertation begins with theoretical analysis and modeling of this boost-buck converter based inverter. And the model indicates small boost inductance will leads to increase the resonant pole frequency and decrease the peak of Q, which help the system be controlled easier and more stable. Thus, interleaved multiple phases structure is proposed to have small equivalent inductance, meanwhile the ripple can be decreased, and the inductor size can be reduced as well. A two-phase interleaved inverter is then designed accordingly. The double-carrier modulation method is proposed based on the inverterâ s operation mode. The duty cycle for buck switch is always one if the inverter is running in boost mode. And the duty cycle for boost switches are always zero if the inverter is running in buck mode. Because of this, the carrier for boost mode is stacked on the top of the carrier for buck mode, as a result, there is no need to compare the input and output voltage to decide which mode the inverter should operate in. And the inverter operates smoothly between these two modes. Based on similar concept, three advanced modulation methods are proposed. One of them can help further improve the efficiency, and one of them can help increase the bandwidth and gain, and the last one takes the advantage of both. Based on similar concept, another three dual-mode double-carrier based SPWM inverters are proposed. With both step-up and step-down functions, this type of inverter can achieve high efficiency in a wide range because only one switch operates at the PWM frequency at a time. Finally, the simulation and experiment results are shown to verify the concept and the tested CEC (California Energy Commission) efficiency is 97.4%. It performs up to 2% more efficiently better than the conventional solution.

The main objective of the project is to develop a Photovoltaic (PV) system using three phase Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) converter as the interfacing component in Power factory. Already existing model in Power factory tool uses static generator as the interfacing converter. Moreover the control technique implemented within the PV model is very basic. Aworking model is already available in PSCAD simulation tool using PWM converter but it is a very detailed one in terms of modeling which results in longer simulation time. Through this project a new PV model is developed in Power factory, an improved version of existing PSCAD and Power factory models. Then a comparison study is carried out between the PSCAD and the new Power factory model in order to validate the created model’s functionality. Several case studies with the DC and AC side disturbances are performed to analyze the behavior of two models. The new PV model is found to function very similar to that of the existing PSCAD model, thus proving its credibility. Further improvements and additional functions are also included in the new Power factory model which makes it a better choice to carry out grid studies than the existing model in PSCAD.

The output power variability of intermittent renewable sources can cause significant fluctuations in distribution system voltages. A local linear controller that exploits the capability of a photovoltaic inverter to provide both real and reactive power is described. This controller substitutes reactive power for real power when fluctuations in the output of the photovoltaic source are experienced. In this way, the inverter can help mitigate distribution system voltage fluctuations. In order to provide real and reactive to the grid, a three-phase grid-connected single-stage photovoltaic system with maximum power point tracking and power control is described. A method of reducing the current harmonic caused by resonance of the LC filter and transformer is presented. The local linear controller is examined using an example distribution system, and it is found that the controller is effective at mitigating voltage violations. The photovoltaic control system is examined using three-phase single-stage PV inverter system. The power control and damping system show good performance and stability under rapid change of irradiance.

We posit that potentially compromised credentials are detectable by analyzing the system artifacts of a large-scale production, single-signon system. With permission from the Defense Manpower Data Center, we analyze a year’s worth of system artifacts produced by the Department of Defense Self-Service Logon system. Using industry standard tools and descriptive statistics we develop a repeatable process that identifies potentially compromised credentials. We look for characteristics that coincide with compromised credentials and evaluate our approach by obtaining the ground truth on several of the credentials we identify.

Fresh water in Kuwait is produced by non- conventional methods. About 95% of this water comes from desalinated seawater using multi-stage flash distillation technique and the remainder comes from underground brackish water. The blended water containes organic, inorganic and trace metal impurities within the recommended international standard limits. The purpose of this work is to identify the source of selected trace metals present in the drinking water in Kuwait. Chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, vanadium and zinc have been analysed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS). Efforts were made to improve the preconcentration of the selected metals and their separation from the high concentration of salts in seawater which affect the accuracy and cause major interference in the analysis. Solid-liquid extraction (chelex-100 resin) and liquid-liquid extraction (methyl iso-butyl ketone and freon) with and without back-extraction into nitric acid were investigated. Liquid-liquid extraction without back-extraction proved to give optimum recovery of the selected metals. Results confirmed that both AAS and ICP-MS are suitable for the analysis of trace metals in Kuwait's waters. Although AAS technique proved to be more accurate in analysing the selected metals than ICP-MS, the latter was adopted since its accuracy is acceptable (1.1-4.4%) and it is easier and faster than the former technique. The study revealed that the source of copper, iron, nickel and zinc is the construction materials of the distillation plants, while the source of lead and vanadium is the brackish water. Manganese and chromium concentrations are very low in all sources. No direct relationship between the metal concentration in the seawater and the distillate could be deduced.

It is the occasion in which scholars can illustrate and exchange their activities and innovative proposals, with common aims to promote actions to preserve coastal marine environment. Considering Symposium interdisciplinary nature, the Scientific Committee, underlining this holistic view of Nature, decided to celebrate Alexander von Humboldt; a nature scholar that proposed the organic and inorganic nature’s aspects as a single system. It represents a sign of continuity considering that in-presence Symposium could not be carried out due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Ṭuqūs al-išārāt wa-l-taḥawwulāt (Rituals of Signs and Transformations), published in 1994, is a play which can be attributed to the last phase of Saʿd Allāh Wannūs’s literary production. At this stage, the Syrian author’s political commitment is no longer expressed through the interest for the collective dimension, but it focuses on the individual, considered as a pivotal element for social change. In Ṭuqūs, Saʿd Allāh Wannūs revisits history from an individual point of view, fragmenting it into a multiplicity of micro-narratives. During the 1880s in Damascus, the muftī, the chief religious legal authority, and the leader of the ašrāf, the descendants of the Prophet, are involved in a feud that splits the city into factions and brings it on the verge of anarchy. When the chief of police arrests the leader of the ašrāf while he is engaged in lovemaking with his mistress in his semi-private garden, the muftī concocts a scheme to save his enemy’s reputation, but his real aim is to subdue him and get rid of him. This event triggers a series of transformations involving the identities of the characters. Thus, the leader of the ašrāf, a regular of prostitutes and assiduous drinker, suddenly becomes a mystic with ascetic ambitions, while the upright muftī loses his head for a high-ranking woman who leaves her respectable life to become a prostitute. The whole society is destabilized by the desires of the characters. Desire not only affects their individual identity, but it also exerts influence on their social position, undermining a system of norms based on hypocrisy and on the division between the ‘latent’ and the ‘manifest’.

This chapter examines the unique status as contemporary American classics that Sondheim’s musicals have achieved in the United Kingdom since the British revue of his workSide by Side by Sondheimopened in London in 1977 before transferring to Broadway. The chapter not only suggests that Sondheim’s love of language, wit, and irony makes his work peculiarly attractive to British audiences, but also explains how the system of theatrical subsidy allows theaters to produce so many revivals and premiere productions, free of the commercial pressures that necessarily predominate on Broadway. AbstractRecirculating aquaculture systems, as part of aquaponic units, are effective in producing aquatic animals with a minimal water consumption through effective treatment stages. Nevertheless, the concentrated sludge produced after the solid filtration stage, comprising organic matter and valuable nutrients, is most often discarded. One of the latest developments in aquaponic technology aims to reduce this potential negative environmental impact and to increase the nutrient recycling by treating the sludge on-site. For this purpose, microbial aerobic and anaerobic treatments, dealt with either individually or in a combined approach, provide very promising opportunities to simultaneously reduce the organic waste as well as to recover valuable nutrients such as phosphorus. Anaerobic sludge treatments additionally offer the possibility of energy production since a by-product of this process is biogas, i.e. mainly methane. By applying these additional treatment steps in aquaponic units, the water and nutrient recycling efficiency is improved and the dependency on external fertiliser can be reduced, thereby enhancing the sustainability of the system in terms of resource utilisation. Overall, this can pave the way for the economic improvement of aquaponic systems because costs for waste disposal and fertiliser acquisition are decreased.

AbstractAlgorithm-based optimization is widely applied in many fields like industrial production, resulting in state-of-the-art workflows in the production process optimization. This project takes the cultural lag of conventional industrial architecture design as a motivation to investigate the implementation of algorithm-based optimization into traditional design processes. We argue that an enhanced way of architectural decision-making is possible. Current approaches use a translation of the whole design problem into a single, overly complicated optimization system. Contrary to that, this paper presents a novel workflow that defines precise design steps and applies optimizations only if suitable. Furthermore, this method can generate relevant results for factory planning design problems with contradicting factors, making it a promising approach for the complex challenges of i.e. resource-efficient building.

The study pursued is to dynamically and systematically manipulate the production rate of each stage and the raw material orders at the first stage which are corresponding to the minimum integrated inventory costs incurred due to raw materials, finished products and work-in-process (WIP) inventories under a varying demand of finished product. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed operation planning methodology for a multistage Kanban managed production and supply chain system.

Abstract The hydraulic fracture treatment (HFT) and its effectiveness to enhance wellbore drainage directly correlate with each well’s overall production performance and underlining economics. This paper will discuss the potential of ultra high stage count Single Point Entry (SPE) sleeves and their ability to increase control over proppant placement and isolation during the HFT as a method for optimizing well performance, economics, and reduce non-uniformity between treatments and wells. To address the limitations of current completion methods, full ID single point entry systems have been developed for open hole and cemented applications. These systems provide unlimited frac stage count with lower frac tortuosity, provide increased control over proppant placement and well production, reduce or eliminate over- flush and formation damage, and achieve higher efficiency during and after frac stimulation than previous conventional plug-and-perf (PnP) and sleeve systems, thereby reducing costs. While the ball-and-seat completion technique revolutionized the efficiency of multi-stage single point entry fracturing, its vast array of limitations (primarily ID restrictions), limited stage count, and compatibility with cemented liners quickly sidelined it in place of PnP. PnP offers increased surface area contact through additional entry points compared to sleeve systems of the past and remains the accepted method for achieving zonal isolation and initiation during stimulation. However, the time intensive operations of PnP present challenges in maintaining efficiencies due to variability in wireline during deployment and coiled tubing during millouts. The increase in number of clusters per stage and number of stages per well achieved with PnP often results in higher stimulated rock volumes (SRV) however, due to the number of multiple clusters open simultaneously, this method gained a "pump-n-pray" reputation due to the uncertainty of cluster efficiency and its unpredictability. The lack of cluster control over the years has created a series of challenges in terms of parent-child well relationships and spacing, economical asset development, and loss of potential production. With over 4,000 stages fracture stimulated across US, Canada, and Asia, some wells containing 220 individual stages, this paper will address the differences in production in terms of bbl of oil equivalent (BOE) for direct and indirect offsets in trials, compare capital efficiency with spud to put on production (POP) timelines, demonstrate economical completion optimization for lower commodity pricing of oil, and carbon intensity reduction measures to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

This paper investigates the opportunities for integrating thermally driven cooling systems with thermally driven desalination systems via cascade of reject heat. Single- and double-stage ammonia-water (NH3–H2O) absorption refrigeration systems with multi-effect distillation (MED) are selected for this study based on technical limitations and practical considerations. Cooling capacity and hourly water production are calculated from thermodynamic properties of the working fluids at different operating conditions using simple models for each of the constituent systems. Additionally, the second law of thermodynamics is applied with the aim of examining the entropy generation of each component as well as the total exergy destruction of the entire system. The results indicate that the total exergy destruction of the combined systems, which consist of an MED unit driven by either a single- or double-stage NH3–H2O refrigeration system, decreases by an average of 55% compared to stand-alone NH3–H2O and MED systems. Relative to stand-alone systems, although water production decreases by 30% and 9% when an MED unit is integrated with single- and double-stage NH3–H2O absorption systems, respectively, cooling capacity remains unchanged for the double-stage NH3-H2O–MED system, and only decreases by 16% for the single-stage NH3-H2O–MED system.

Aiming for the European and North American tri-generation market, highly-efficient systems are being developed. At the moment, single-stage absorption chillers are typically coupled to co-generation engines through a single hot water loop at temperatures below 100°C (210°F). In this configuration, the heat from the exhaust gas at temperatures of about 400-500°C (750-930°F) is transferred to the water loop, which is accompanied by a significant loss of exergy. A substantial increase in system performance can be achieved by a stepwise utilisation of the exhaust gas enthalpy in a Double-Effect and a Single-Effect cycle. In this combination of one-and two-stage chillers the coefficient of performance (COP) increases from about 0.7 to almost 1.0 whereby the cooling capacity rises by about 25%. In order to facilitate optimum adaptation of the aggregates - i.e. motor engine and absorption chiller - and to give maximum flexibility an innovative system concept has been developed. The new coupling scheme is based on a standard direct-fired Double-Effect chiller and introduces only minor design changes, like adaptation of the thermal layout of the exhaust gas driven regenerator heat exchanger of the chiller. No additional low temperature regenerators are required. In case of simultaneous heating and cooling the system supports a continuous switchover between maximum cooling and maximum heating capacity. In this mode up to 80% of the driving heat for cold production can be recovered as useful heat at temperatures up to 100°C (210°F). A description of the coupling scheme together with a discussion of energetic and operational characteristics of the concept is presented. Full-scale demonstration projects are under preparation.

Abstract Digital transformation of oil and gas companies requires consistent improvement of work performance management. Oil and gas companies strive to improve work efficiency and consistently develop and implement digital products. The realization of such complicated solutions requires deep diving into current business processes and transformation of them. This paper deals with implementation of digital management system for exploration and production wells. Digital management system for exploration and production wells is based on ideology of digital twin and act as a single window and single source of data for all exploration and production wells. Digital management system covers whole construction process started from planning stage to execution and results assessment and orchestrates the exchange of data between process phases and people involved in it. Transparency provided by the digital twin improves efficiency and accelerates well construction process. Cognitive assistants based on AI and ML techniques are implemented at every stage: while planning, the assistants search analogue wells, analyze its design and complications while drilling and provide recommendations for the most optimal well design, offers the optimum drilling mud density and recommends the most suitable set of logs to cover geological section uncertainty. At the execution stage, a number of ML assistants are used to increase efficiency and reduce risks while drilling: automatic method for anomaly detection while drilling to prevent complications while drilling, machine learning based model for automatic torque and drag control to control borehole condition to predict any signs of differential stuck, key sitting and pack-off, data-driven model for drilling bit position and direction determination to predict BHA position while drilling including a blind zone, data-driven model for the identification of the rock type at a drilling bit for correct geosteering application.

An oil and gas company was facing process and mechanical related problems on the multiple-stage compressor trains at two important booster installations. The frequency of these problems has increased lately, and this has led to frequent trips and shut downs. These interruptions affect the operation of the plant leading to a loss in production and consequences of lost revenue for the company. The two platforms each contain one compressor train comprising a four-stage compressor with a gas turbine driver. Each train is fitted with an integrated turbine compressor control panel. Thus, a detailed dynamic pipeline system simulation of the subject compressor trains was performed in order to provide a series of recommendations that would improve the safe operation and increase the reliability of the compression systems. The analysis included a review of the existing compression systems including all the equipment and hardware related with the compression anti-surge system. In addition, a site visit was performed to review and understand the existing anti-sure control system at each facility. A detailed dynamic model of the multi-stage compression system was built for each train. These models included compressor performance maps, gas compositions for each stage and train, piping yard, recycle, isolation, check and blowdown valves, scrubbers, separators, and coolers. Several simulation cases were conducted for both the platform systems. These cases evaluated the effect of the delay and travel times of the existing anti-surge valves, delay the coast down action, failure of the non-return valves (NRVs), action of a blowdown valve on the emergency shutdown (ESD) sequences, recycle valve bypasses, check valve arrays, and process upset conditions. In addition, parametric studies were conducted for each of the most important parameters of the system to quantify their effect of any possible modification. The results of this analysis provide recommendations to solve some of the existing issues while understanding more of the dynamics of the system. It was found that any propose recommendation or change in the sequence or timing of one stage will affect the surrounding stages since they are not only connected through the piping as they are driven by the same gas turbine shaft. Therefore, a very comprehensive analysis was conducted for each train to provide recommendations that would be feasible for implementation while reducing the constant risk of mechanical failure and surge events. Thus, results of the analysis and some of the recommendations obtained are presented in this paper.
