This study re-examines the prevalent view of classical social theorist, Auguste Comte and contemporary social theorist,Gerhard Lenski. Both social theorists are important figures in terms of social change and social development.Therefore, within context, the notion of social change theories, its relations and cause of social change are discussed,followed by an outline of the concepts of both theorists. Next, it deals with what the two perspectives share in commonand compares the differences between them. The study revealed that the two perspectives are fundamentally differentbecause Comte focused on the development of human thought while Lenski focused on social change and developmentas a result of technology. In this respect, the determinants of social change and development emerge from withinsociety itself; the deepest and the most important disagreement lies between those who see the mental or spiritualevolution of society as the main driving force of history and those who see the role of technology as its root cause.

This article reviews three Japanese sociological theorists, who explore the nature of modernity, or late modernity, in relation to the postmodern assumption that modernization, or late modernization, is far from a single-track evolutionary process. In his criticism of viewing the modernization theory via an indigenous perspective, Yosuke Koto considers the exogenous impacts of advanced countries to illuminate the hybrid nature of modernity. Based on cognitive sociology, Masataka Katagiri explores the transformation of the self during individualization since the 19th century to illuminate several aspects of individualization in late modernity. In contrast to the symbolic model of modern sociological theories since Durkheim, Takeshi Mikami develops a diabolic theory that reveals a new perspective on the connection between individuals and society in late modernity. Referring to Japan as an important case study, these three sociological theorists provide theoretical insights on some of the complex aspects of late modernity.

This article offers a sociological perspective on a major conceptual issue in international relations, the question of ‘security’, and it raises major issues to do with the role of sociological concepts in international studies. For some years now, the work of sociological writers such as Skocpol, Giddens and Mann1 has attracted some interest in international studies. International theorists such as Linklater and Halliday have seen their work as offering a theoretical advance both on realism and on Marxist alternatives. At the same time, these developments have involved the paradox that, as one critic puts it, ‘current sociological theories of the state are increasingly approaching a more traditional view of the state—the state as actor model—precisely at a time when the theory of international relations is getting away from this idea and taking a more sociological form.

Modern sociological theory tends to be overly cognitive, underemphasizing both habit and emotions. During the past decade, the increased attention to the sociology of emotions has helped partially to correct for some of the problems created by overly cognitive theories. More recent attention is focusing on habitual activities. Although several classic theorists dealt with habit, the concept was dropped from modern sociological theories, beginning some seventy years ago. The present article extends the research on the removal of the concept of habit from sociological theory by evaluating the treatment of habit by George Herbert Mead and symbolic interactionists. Although Mead's theory integrated habit with cognitive and emotional processes, most symbolic interactionists have taken an overly cognitive position that neglects habit. The sharp contrast between the two positions adds to the documentation that sociology has drifted toward highly cognitive theories in the past half century. Mead's theory shows that it is not necessary for sociology to neglect habit or emotion and that it is possible to integrate habit, emotions, and self-conscious action in one internally consistent theory.

This paper is a simple account of my teaching experience1, the aim of which is to answer the question: “How can we successfully teach interactionism, labeling theory, grounded theory and other sociological bases related to qualitative methods with the active participation of students?”. Through the examples of sociologists working in the Chicago Tradition, French sociologists working with Pierre Bourdieu, and other examples from American sociology, I show that sociological work is group activity. It is argued in this paper, that to make sociological thinking understandable to students teachers may do well to contextualize key theorists in their narrative/biographical context. The students learn, that sociologists are not magicians or genius individuals who produce attractive theories. Rather, they work in collaboration with other humans to generate knowledge. Moreoever, I demonstrate that sociologists’ contributions are often strongly related to and influenced by their broader life context.

A história das teorias criminológicas foi marcada pela constante dicotomia natureza x cultura, oscilando o pêndulo ora para o lado da natureza, como foi o caso do positivismo, ora para o lado da cultura, como são as teorias sociológicas. Recentemente, no entanto, as ciências naturais vêm se deparando com o rápido desenvolvimento de algumas disciplinas, como as neurociências, a genética comportamental e a psicologia evolucionista, que podem eventualmente trazer novas luzes para a compreensão do fenômeno delitivo, pois procuram superar a dicotomia, abordando o ser humano não apenas como uma unidade biológica separada de sua dimensão social, mas buscam uma visão integradora. Assim, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar as eventuais contribuições de um desses novos saberes: a psicologia evolucionista. Para isso foi necessário fazer um estudo breve das diversas teorias criminológicas de cunho etiológico, uma sucinta apresentação dos pontos fundamentais da psicologia evolucionista e, finalmente, os contributos que os teóricos evolucionistas vêm realizando para a compreensão do fenômeno criminal. Diante das limitações inerentes ao trabalho e considerando a variedade dos assuntos, cuja apresentação ficaria muito extensa, serão escolhidos alguns tópicos em que se analisarão, de forma sucinta, algumas perspectivas dos teóricos evolucionistas acerca de temas relevantes para o estudo da criminalidade. Ao final do trabalho, concluiu-se que a psicologia evolucionista pode oferecer um novo olhar sobre a criminalidade, complementando as demais teorias já desenvolvidas.
The history of the criminology theories has been marked by the constant dichotomy into nature and culture as a pendulum oscillating either between nature , as seen in positivism, or culture as seen in sociological theories. Recently, however, the natural sciences sees a quickly development in some disciplines, as the neurosciences, behavior genetics and evolutionary psychology, that can eventually bring new lights to the comprehension of the criminal phenomenon. They intend not only to surpass the dichotomy, understanding the human being as a biological unit separate from its social dimension, but seeks for an integrated perception. So, the present work aims to analyze the eventual contribution of a new acquaintance, the evolutionary psychology. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to make a brief study of the etiological criminological theories, to display a brief presentation of the fundamental points of the evolutionary psychology and finally to present the contribution that the evolutionary theorists are carrying through for the understanding of the criminal phenomenon. Despite the inherent limitation of the work and considering the variety of subjects we will concentrate on the ones that present relevant contribution from the above mentioned theorists concerning pertinent new perspectives upon crime. It was concluded that the evolutionist psychology can offer a new look upon criminality, complementing such theories already developed.

This study is a sociological exploration of the difficulties of pursuing lesbian and gay agendas within democratic polities. Feminists have engaged with democratic theory and practice in an attempt to understand why gender inequalities have been resistant to democratic remedies. Yet, despite the connections between feminist and gay politics and theory, there has been no significant lesbian and gay intervention in this debate. This research is an attempt to address this omission, through a consideration of the implications of sociological theories of sexuality for lesbian and gay political identities and strategies. I engage in a critique of explanations of sexuality which range from Freud through interactionism to Foucault and Queer theory, arguing that these perspectives do not thoroughly challenge the naturalist ontology on which political identities and strategies are based. I argue that a structurally contextualised interactionist perspective on the formation of the sexual self allows us a better sociological understanding of the relationship between historically specific processes of identity formation and the stability of sexual identity exhibited by most individuals and used as the legitimisation for lesbian and gay identity politics. Specifically, I argue that we need to theorise naturalist understandings of sexuality as core and stable perceptions of sexual subjectivity which are necessary to rationalisations of past experience and future actions. This understanding can form the basis of a more effective politics which comprehensively displaces naturalist ideas about sexuality because the provision of alternative, sociological discourses of the sexual self broadens the legitimate arena of sexual politics from the current focus on rights allotted to `natural' individuals to the ways in which individuality is constructed through social processes and thus sexual inequalities are socially produced and sustained. In conclusion, I acknowledge that translating sociological perspectives into practical political identities and strategies is a difficult task. However, I explore the methods of group representation which are currently being discussed within radical democratic and feminist theory as one way of generating further debate on pragmatic and yet socially transformative strategies for lesbian and gay politics.

This dissertation aims to analyze the background and the train of thought of Manoel Bomfim about the formation of the Brazilian nation. Thus, this study has three analyses perspectives: a) the family and author‟s life path b) his academic formation and constitution as intellectual and c) the reflection about the work “A América Latina: males da origem”. The family origin gains importance as the author comes from a social group with no strain. Besides the status, the academic qualification in Medicine had great influence in the use of a “biologizing” language, with several medical metaphors. A constant association between “biological” and “social” phenomena. The academic background allowed him to have some social contacts that has introduced him to be part of some Brazilian “intellectual groups” at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In these groups, Bomfim took part in the discussions that occurred during that period, hugely featured on racial issues. Regarding these issues, the author stood being very critical, disagreeing with racial assumptions, such as “bleaching”. Thereby, he assumed a different attitude from most of his intellectual peers and the institutions which they represented. In short, in the review of Bomfim‟s first work, we find his basic ideas which he will develop on his later works. And one of them is that the “evils” of the Latin Americans nations are linked to the inherited issues of the “parasitic” European colonization. Such inheritance, in addition to promoting the spoliation of these colonized societies, produced “conservative” nations. It means that, societies who reproduced by “inheritance” the “habits” of the colonizers. From these questionings about Latin America‟s socioeconomic conditions as the result from its “origin” and “ethinicity”, Bomfim proposed another conception of nation and nationality by questioning the scientific speeches from that time.
Esta dissertação tem por objetivo analisar a trajetória e o pensamento de Manoel Bomfim sobre a formação da nação brasileira. Assim, esse estudo conduzir-se-á através de três perspectivas de análise: a) a trajetória da família e do autor, b) a formação acadêmica e constituição enquanto intelectual e c) a reflexão sobre a obra “A América Latina: males de origem”. A origem familiar ganha importância à medida que o autor vem de um grupo social sem estirpe, que se constituiu um “grupo social novo” em ascensão. Além do status, a formação médica influencia fortemente no uso de uma linguagem “biologizante”, com diversas metáforas médicas. Uma constante associação entre fenômenos “biológicos” e “sociais”. A formação escolar lhe permitiu os contatos sociais que o inseriram nos “meios intelectuais” brasileiros da transição do século XIX para o XX. Nesses circuitos, Bomfim participou dos debates correntes no período, muito caracterizados pelas discussões sobre questões raciais. Sobre elas, posicionou-se o autor de maneira bastante crítica, discordando de premissas raciais como, por exemplo, o “branqueamento”. Com isso, assumiu uma postura diversa da maioria dos seus pares intelectuais e das respectivas instituições as que eles representavam. Enfim, na análise da obra de estreia de Manoel Bomfim, encontraremos suas ideias básicas que ele desenvolverá nos seus trabalhos posteriores. Entre elas, a de que os “males” das nações latino-americanas estão ligados a questões da herança da colonização europeia “parasitária”. Tal herança, além de promover a espoliação dessas sociedades colonizadas, produziram nações “conservantistas”. Quer dizer, sociedades que reproduziram por “herança” os “vícios” dos colonizadores. A partir desses questionamentos sobre as condições socioeconômicas da América Latina enquanto resultado do seu “meio” e “raça”, Bomfim propôs outra concepção de nacionalidade e nação ao questionar os discursos científicos da época.

The paper describes the interview as an essential instrument in the social field research. Therefore, the main purpose of the interview is to obtain certain information about one or more research issues. Sociological theorists have argued that there are three fundamental types of interview: the standardized (formal or structured) interview, the un-standardized (informal or non-directive) interview, and the semi-standardized (guided-semi-structured or focused) interview. The semistandardized interview has a pronounced qualitative side, its area of use being extremely varied, in this sense including both the field of human resources - the employment interview, the performance measurement interview, etc. - as well as that of sociology, anthropology, ethnology or psychology.

Выявив соотношение теорий моды, авторы пришли к выводу о важности комплексного, полидисциплинарного изучения феномена моды, а также многозначности моды, распространяющейся также на мир духовных социальных фактов. The article reflects the analysis of the fashion phenomenon through the prism of sociological theories, such as autocratic (P. Poiret, M.-A. de Fontange, J. B. Brummel), motivational (P. Nystrom, G.W.F. Hegel, J. Flügel, I. Bloch, R. Bart), event-based (J. Laver, G. Tarde). Having revealed the correlation of the theories of fashion, the authors came to the conclusion about the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of the phenomenon of fashion, as well as the ambiguity of fashion, which also extends to the world of spiritual social facts.

Цель статьи: рассмотреть проблематику суицида в социологической теории Э. Дюркгейма. Методы: компаративистский, исторический, системный, структурно-функциональный. Результаты: выявлены основные идеи социологии суицида Э. Дюркгейма проявления. Выводы: Социологическое изучение суицида Э. Дюркгеймом стало отправной точкой для последующих теорий и концепции изучения суицида в социологии. Purpose of the article: to consider the problem of suicide in the sociological theory of E. Durkheim. Methods: comparative, historical, systemic, structural and functional. Results: the main ideas of the sociology of E. Durkheim's suicide manifestations were revealed. Conclusions: Sociological study of suicide by E. Durkheim became the starting point for subsequent theories and concepts of the study of suicide in sociology.

This paper investigates the Gülen movement’s repertoires of action in order to determine how it differs from traditional Islamic revivalist movements and from the so-called ‘New Social Movements’ in the Western world. Two propositions lead the discussion: First, unlike many Islamic revivalist movements, the Gülen movement shaped its identity against the perceived threat of a trio of enemies, as Nursi named them a century ago – ignorance, disunity, and poverty. This perception of the opposition is crucial to understanding the apolitical mind-set of the Gülen movement’s fol- lowers. Second, unlike the confrontational New Social Movements, the Gülen movement has engaged in ‘moral opposition’, in which the movement’s actors seek to empathise with the adversary by creating (what Bakhtin calls) ‘dialogic’ relationships. ‘Moral opposition’ has enabled the movement to be more alert strategically as well as more productive tactically in solving the everyday practical problems of Muslims in Turkey. A striking example of this ‘moral opposition’ was witnessed in the Merve Kavakci incident in 1999, when the move- ment tried to build bridges between the secular and Islamist camps, while criticising and educating both parties during the post-February 28 period in Turkey. In this way the Gülen movement’s performance of opposition can contribute new theoretical and practical tools for our understanding of social movements. 104 | P a g e Recent works on social movements have criticized the longstanding tradition of classify- ing social movement types as “strategy-oriented” versus “identity-oriented” (Touraine 1981; Cohen 1985; Rucht 1988) and “identity logic of action” versus “instrumentalist logic of ac- tion” (Duyvendak and Giugni 1995) by regarding identities as a key element of a move- ment’s strategic and tactical repertoire (see Bernstein 1997, 2002; Gamson 1997; Polletta 1998a; Polletta and Jasper 2001; Taylor and Van Dyke 2004). Bifurcation of identity ver- sus strategy suggests the idea that some movements target the state and the economy, thus, they are “instrumental” and “strategy-oriented”; whereas some other movements so-called “identity movements” challenge the dominant cultural patterns and codes and are considered “expressive” in content and “identity-oriented.” New social movement theorists argue that identity movements try to gain recognition and respect by employing expressive strategies wherein the movement itself becomes the message (Touraine 1981; Cohen 1985; Melucci 1989, 1996). Criticizing these dualisms, some scholars have shown the possibility of different social movement behaviour under different contextual factors (e.g. Bernstein 1997; Katzenstein 1998). In contrast to new social movement theory, this work on the Gülen movement indi- cates that identity movements are not always expressive in content and do not always follow an identity-oriented approach; instead, identity movements can synchronically be strategic as well as expressive. In her article on strategies and identities in Black Protest movements during the 1960s, Polletta (1994) criticizes the dominant theories of social movements, which a priori assume challengers’ unified common interests. Similarly, Jenkins (1983: 549) refers to the same problem in the literature by stating that “collective interests are assumed to be relatively unproblematic and to exist prior to mobilization.” By the same token, Taylor and Whittier (1992: 104) criticize the longstanding lack of explanation “how structural inequality gets translated into subjective discontent.” The dominant social movement theory approaches such as resource mobilization and political process regard these problems as trivial because of their assumption that identities and framing processes can be the basis for interests and further collective action but cannot change the final social movement outcome. Therefore, for the proponents of the mainstream theories, identities of actors are formed in evolutionary processes wherein social movements consciously frame their goals and produce relevant dis- courses; yet, these questions are not essential to explain why collective behaviour occurs (see McAdam, McCarthy, and Zald 1996). This reductionist view of movement culture has been criticized by a various number of scholars (e.g. Goodwin and Jasper 1999; Polletta 1997, 1999a, 1999b; Eyerman 2002). In fact, the debate over the emphases (interests vis-à-vis identities) is a reflection of the dissent between American and European sociological traditions. As Eyerman and Jamison (1991: 27) note, the American sociologists focused on “the instrumentality of movement strategy formation, that is, on how movement organizations went about trying to achieve their goals,” whereas the European scholars concerned with the identity formation processes that try to explain “how movements produced new historical identities for society.” Although the social movement theorists had recognized the deficiencies within each approach, the attempts to synthesize these two traditions in the literature failed to address the empirical problems and methodological difficulties. While criticizing the mainstream American collective behaviour approaches that treat the collective identities as given, many leading European scholars fell into a similar trap by a 105 | P a g e priori assuming that the collective identities are socio-historical products rather than cog- nitive processes (see, for instance, Touraine 1981). New Social Movement (NSM) theory, which is an offshoot of European tradition, has lately been involved in the debate over “cog- nitive praxis” (Eyerman and Jamison 1991), “signs” (Melucci 1996), “identity as strategy” (Bernstein 1997), protest as “art” (Jasper 1997), “moral performance” (Eyerman 2006), and “storytelling” (Polletta 2006). In general, these new formulations attempt to bring mental structures of social actors and symbolic nature of social action back in the study of collec- tive behaviour. The mental structures of the actors should be considered seriously because they have a potential to change the social movement behaviours, tactics, strategies, timing, alliances and outcomes. The most important failure, I think, in the dominant SM approaches lies behind the fact that they hinder the possibility of the construction of divergent collective identities under the same structures (cf. Polletta 1994: 91). This study investigates on how the Gülen movement differed from other Islamic social move- ments under the same structural factors that were realized by the organized opposition against Islamic activism after the soft coup in 1997. Two propositions shall lead my discussion here: First, unlike many Islamic revivalist movements, the Gülen movement shaped its identity against perceived threat of the triple enemies, what Nursi defined a century ago: ignorance, disunity, and poverty. This perception of the opposition is crucial to grasp non-political men- tal structures of the Gülen movement followers. Second, unlike the confrontational nature of the new social movements, the Gülen movement engaged in a “moral opposition,” in which the movement actors try to empathize with the enemy by creating “dialogic” relationships.

There is a large number of teachings about the state in legal philosophy and theory; however, even today in the 21st century, the idealistic and realistic view (teaching) about the state stands out. In the first, the essence of the state is contained in a surreal environment, and in this regard, this direction emphasizes what the state should be like. Three views of this direction still dominate today: utopian, natural, legal, and ethical-cultural. In realistic theories, the state is seen as a phenomenon of the real world in which the essence is contained in the experiential world, determined by laws. Considering that legal theories about the state are relatively young because their largest number originated in the 19th and 20th centuries, this contributes to determining the state as a logically regulated unity of legal norms that regulate the behavior of people in society. In this paper, the emphasis is placed on presenting the modern point of view of the utopian, natural law, ethical-cultural, sociological, and political point of view on the state today. The modern state is considered as an institution within which modern social theories operate.

Racism persists in the work we do as architects, architecture students, and architectural educators. In this paper, we combine sociological theories of colorblind racism and white hegemony with an analysis of architectural design processes. We draw from writings, poetry, imagery, and renderings as media that aid in making architecture’s racial discrimination visible. We propose ways of thinking about colorblind racism in design that we hope will aid design practioners, students, and teachers in countering hegemonic racist ideologies that are present in our work. We consider ways that in our practices and our teaching, we conceptualize space as colorblind, we render those spaces as white, hegemonic, and normative, and we disengage when those spaces sustain racism. We argue that our failure to see the racialization of the spaces we imagine is an expression of colorblind racism.

M. Sergeyev’s article “Ukrainian National Idea in the Modern Ukrainian Media Space” states that modern Ukrainian philosophical thought tries to get rid of the flaws and stereotypes of its one-sided orientation “to the East” and tries to establish a European orientation in the minds of Ukrainian citizens. The theoretical proof of the new worldview took place throughout the formation of the Ukrainian state from Little Russia to Ukraine and presents its actual struggle for independence. It is an integral concept that reflects the process of forming theories and views of prominent Ukrainian thinkers on the place and role of Ukrainians in the becoming and development of an independent Ukrainian state. As O. Zabuzhko emphasizes, “all Ukrainian philosophical, historical, sociological thought of the past and our centuries (including the diaspora) is permeated with the sacred idea of nationalism”. The author concludes that the logic of the historical development of the Ukrainian national idea reveals only one model of its socio-political future, which implies the need for Ukraine’s integration into the European and world community. This path requires the moral and political readiness of the entire Ukrainian society for its implementation and prevents the emergence of any other - alternative ideas. Solving this problem is complicated by the need to return to Ukraine the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Of course, this model will lead to significant political and economic tensions in society (the final severance of economic relations with Russia, the closure of non-competitive industries, the outflow of labor to the west). At the same time, the orientation of the Ukrainian national idea to the west will increase competition in all branches of production and will be a condition for further self-improvement of Ukrainian society.
