Between the Loire and the Gironde, the Atlantic Ocean runs along a succession of zones, the level of which is lower than that of the Spring tides. The main ones are: In the North, the marsh of Vendee, between the Loire and the Bocage (woody district): 50,000 hectares. In the Center, the marsh of Poitou, between the Bocage and Aunis; 80,000 hectares. In the South, the marsh of Saintonge, between Aunis and Saintonge: 50,000 hectares. Natural defences (sand-hills, shingle beaches) exist in some places. But more often than not, the protection is assured by artificial defences. Seaside resorts (Chetelaillon, Royan) are protected by other works. Ahead of the coast line lie large islands (Noirmoutier, Re, Oleron) which include lowlands even more threatened than those on the continent. Therefore,this coast offers a great number of interesting works for the specialized engineer.

The mixed forest of the St. Lawrence valley, which presents jour successive landscapes during its seasonal rhythm, bas been the dorsal spine of Eastern Canada s economy since the establishment of the French colony. The various people who have successively inhabited this forest have either used it as members of the bio-sociological unit or tried to modify its ecology, depending on their traditional culture. It was occupied soon after the glacier recession by the Red-ochre Man, who was followed by the Algonkian forest hunters. Later, the same territory was inhabited by Iroquoian tribes, who brought with them their agriculture which had evolved in the South, but was reoccupied by the Algonkian tribes just before the foundation of Québec. At this time it became a country of European settlers, who carried with them their Old World agriculture and tried to reconstruct in a new continent their Normandie or Poitou landscape. For a newly established agriculturist, the land hardly produced enough for a living. The exploitation of Canadian forests was unpopular amongst the LaRochelle merchants who preferred to trade in the Baltic regions. The first important economic resource was the fur trade. Later, when Napoleon Bonaparte set up a blockade in the Baltic sea, England had to look elsewhere to save and develop her navy and found in the forests of Eastern Canada the pine-trees she needed. Finally, the increase in the number of news-papers, which was largely a consequence of the French revolution, developed another type of forest industry, the production of spruce pulp.

The effectiveness of a fox-control exercise at the Beecroft Peninsula, New South Wales, was evaluated by examining the change in proportion of baits taken during free-feeding and after lethal baiting in four different habitats (heath, forest, coastal scrub, beach), and the change in number of radio-collared foxes alive during the course of the baiting exercise. The change in proportion of baits taken by non-target species was also examined over the course of the study. Bait take declined by 97% from the initiation of poison baiting to the final day of poison baiting eight days later with significantly more baits being taken in heath than in any other habitat. Four out of six radio-collared foxes died on the first day of poison baiting while the other two foxes died within ten days of the start of the poison-baiting session. Black rats, currawongs and ravens took a small number of baits throughout the baiting exercise.

SummarySouth Island RobinsPetroica australis australiswere monitored through two different brodifacoum (Talon 20 P, 20 ppm) control operations targeting stoatsMustela ermineaand ship ratsRattus rattusin aNothofagusforest. Repeated observations of banded and radio-tagged territorial adult Robins were used to monitor survival from 6 to 8 weeks after poisoning. Where poison was deployed in bait feeders, 96.7% (29/30) of marked Robins definitely survived, whilst where poison was freely broadcast, only 52.2% (12/23) of marked Robins definitely survived. At the non-treatment site 85.7% (18/21) of marked Robins definitely survived. This study demonstrates that individual Robins are at risk from poisoning from exposed brodifacoum on the forest floor and therefore, probably from aerial application of brodifacoum. Further research is required to determine whether the benefit to Robin populations from successful predator control outweighs the loss of some Robins from poisoning. Conservation managers must take a wide view of the ecological community impacts when controlling introduced mammalian predators.

BackgroundThere is extensive literature on animal poisoning from plants and mushrooms worldwide; however, there is limited account of poisoning from South Africa.MethodsThis study sought to describe and provide an overview of animal poison exposures in South Africa. Poisoning episodes reported to the Poisons Information Helpline of the Western Cape, jointly run by the Poisons Information Centres at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital over a period of approximately 2.5 years, from June 2015 to November 2017, were analysed to identify exposure patterns, severity and clinical outcomes.ResultsAlien plant species accounted for most cases (n=10) of reported poison exposures. Among the 26 recorded animal poisoning episodes, the dog was the most commonly implicated species (n=24), whereas just two enquiries were related to other animals (one rabbit and one cow) . There were 20 plant cases and 6 mushroom cases (all dogs). There was only one fatal case involving cycad in a dog.ConclusionFeatures of animal poisoning in South Africa were similar to those in other countries. The reported cases of animals exposed to poisonous plants and mushrooms could represent only a fraction of the actual exposures. Since most reported cases involved taxa that could not be identified to species level, more attention should be paid in case reporting and in animal poisoning prevention, engaging the public to enable people to recognise potentially hazardous plants and reduce the risk of poisoning in animals.

This study investigated attitudes towards suicide among 622 Standard 9 (U.S. Grade 11) secondary school pupils chosen at random from schools throughout the Northern Province in South Africa. The pupils were 254 (41%) boys and 368 (59%) girls in the age range of 17 to 24 years, with a mean age of 19.3 yr. A questionnaire was administered to obtain data on attitudes and other measures. There were 31 (17%) parasuicidal boys and 34 (13%) girls. Major intentions or reasons to commit suicide mentioned were “failing to solve problems” and “mental illness.” Most frequent possible suicide methods were firearms, pills, or poison. Significant associations were found with having a friend or relative who committed suicide, parasuicide (oneself), depression, stress events, ethnicity, and attitudes towards suicide.

Amphibians are known by cutaneous glands, spread over the skin, containing toxins (proteins, peptides, biogenic amines, steroidal bufadienolides, and alkaloids) used as chemical defense against predators and microbial infection. Toads are characterized by the presence of parotoid macroglands. The common toads have lately been divided into two genera:Bufo(Europe, Asia, and Africa) andRhinella(South America). BasalRhaebogenus is exclusively of Central America and Amazon region. AlthoughRhinellaandRhaeboare related, species may share differences due to the diversity of environments that they live in. In this work, we have performed a biochemical characterization of the components of the poison of eightRhinellaspecies and oneRhaeboby means of RP-HPLC with either UV or MS detection and by SDS-PAGE, in order to verify whether phylogenetic and biological differences, such as habitat, diet, and defensive strategies, between them may also be reflected in poison composition. Although some components were common among the secretions, we were able to identify exclusive molecules to some species. The fact that closely related animals living in different habitats secrete different molecules into the skin is an indication that biological features, and not only evolution, seem to directly influence the skin secretion composition.

This article describes the world view of the people of South Central Timor Regency regarding Atoni Pah Meto in the Poitan Liana Rite. With qualitative descriptive methods, the paper formulated (1) Poitan Liana Rite means the kinship displayed in the role of Atoin Amaf in belief in Uis Neno, Uis Pah, and the ancestors through symbolic actions and speech; (2) Timorese view their life as an integral part of supernatural life, and the continuation of people’s lives in harmony between social order and cosmic order. Uis Neno, Uis Pah, and Ancestors are believed to be a supernatural power involved in human life. All forms of supernatural power interventions are in the context of the life of Atoni Pah Meto that proceeds to actualize themselves as “Responsible on earth”. (3) All human efforts are seen as a blessing from Uis Neno, Uis Pah, and the ancestors. Overall Poitan Liana’s ceremony contains meaning related to the understanding of self, nature, and society on one hand, as well as relations with supernatural powers on the other. In this vertical and horizontal dimension, Orang Boti directs himself to the vertical dimension to maintain his life in the horizontal dimension.

Au XVIIIe siècle, la production des eaux-de-vie est la principale activité économique d’un territoire limité dont le marché de référence devient Cognac. De nombreux métiers sont impliqués dans l’élaboration de ces produits avant et après le passage à l’alambic. Rapidement, des taxes sont appliquées sur ces boissons. L’État trouve ainsi de nouvelles ressources d’autant que toute la société est concernée, malgré l’existence de privilèges. Afin de faciliter les échanges, la règlementation cherche à harmoniser les mesures et les contenants. Des contrôles tentent de démasquer les fraudes. Au cours du XIXe siècle, la présence de l’État à l’échelon local et national se confirme selon trois tendances principales. Tout d’abord, par la protection des entrepreneurs et de la propriété privée qui débouche sur la prise en compte de questions environnementales et de santé publique. Ensuite, dans un contexte de grande créativité, d’innovation et de transformation du matériel distillatoire, par la préservation des droits des inventeurs grâce au dépôt de demande brevet qui donne la possibilité de dénoncer la contrefaçon. In the 18th century, the production of brandy was the main economic activity in a limited area whose reference market became Cognac. Many trades were involved in the production of these products before and after the still. Taxes were soon applied to these drinks. The State thus found new resources, especially as the whole society was concerned, despite the existence of privileges. In order to facilitate trade, the regulations sought to harmonize measures and containers. Controls were carried out to detect fraud. During the 19th century, the presence of the state at local and national level was confirmed in three main ways. Firstly, through the protection of entrepreneurs and private property, which led to the consideration of environmental and public health issues. Secondly, in the context of great creativity, innovation and transformation of distilling material, by the preservation of the rights of inventors through the filing of patent applications which gives the possibility to denounce counterfeiting. Ultimately, the authorities are developing procedures to protect trademarks. Prefectural decrees supplement the legal arsenal that is being deployed. Nevertheless, challenges and other practices limit the reality of the exercise of power

This dissertation examines the experience that women have of the church. Work was done with groups of women in the Eastern Cape to hear their first hand experiences on this subject. A study was also made of the experiences of women as recorded in other parts of Africa and the world. South African women are situated within the broader context of society, thus also matters pertaining to this broader context were examined.The situation facing South African women in society and within the church is complex and difficult. In the final chapter, rather than looking at how women could change external structures, the focus is on women paying attention to themselves. The great importance of women honouring themselves, and giving themselves priority, and that of developing a spiritual practice that is nurturing and relevant to their lives, were suggested as a prerequisite for effective change on a wider level. An emphasis was thus put on the inner world of the woman, where, it is argued, many South African women need to experience a revolution. That women need support in this journey was stressed, with the participation in women's groups seen as being transforming for women.

Abstract This study provides an account of the media coverage from The Star and The Citizen that dealt with the topic of water pollution in the Vanderbijlpark area. The first research question of this study asked how much coverage this issue had received in the two newspapers analysed. The second research question asked what this coverage of the issue looked like. The quantitative findings revealed that very few articles dealt with this topic from either publication, especially in relation to the corporation responsible for this pollution, namely Mittal Steel (previously Iscor). The qualitative findings involved thematic content analysis revealing themes such as legal conflict, sourcing, greenwashing and environmental reporting. A particular concern raised by this study was the use of sources and attribution in the articles. The local community was provided with very few opportunities to express their own concerns about the water pollution problem. It was found that most articles made extensive use of ‘official sources’ and representatives from the corporation and various government departments. A very limited number of articles provided the local community with public representation and described the situation in detail. This study concluded that these two publications had in fact failed in their responsibilities as the ‘fourth estate’ by providing very little coverage of the issue and by relying on official sources and public relations personnel.

The ripple e ect of a stock market crash due to extremal dependence is a global issue with key attention and it is at the core of all modelling e orts in risk management. Two methods of extreme value theory (EVT) were used in this study to model equity risk and extremal dependence in the tails of stock market indices from four African emerging markets: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt. The rst is the \bivariate-threshold-excess model" and the second is the \point process approach". With regards to the univariate analysis, the rst nding in the study shows in descending hierarchy that volatility with persistence is highest in the South African market, followed by Egyptian market, then Nigerian market and lastly, the Kenyan equity market. In terms of risk hierarchy, the Egyptian EGX 30 market is the most risk-prone, followed by the South African JSE-ALSI market, then the Nigerian NIGALSH market and the least risky is the Kenyan NSE 20 market. It is therefore concluded that risk is not a brainchild of volatility in these markets. For the bivariate modelling, the extremal dependence ndings indicate that the African continent regional equity markets present a huge investment platform for investors and traders, and o er tremendous opportunity for portfolio diversi cation and investment synergies between markets. These synergistic opportunities are due to the markets being asymptotic (extremal) independent or (very) weak asymptotic dependent and negatively dependent. This outcome is consistent with the ndings of Alagidede (2008) who analysed these same markets using co-integration analysis. The bivariate-threshold-excess and point process models are appropriate for modelling the markets' risks. For modelling the extremal dependence however, given the same marginal threshold quantile, the point process has more access to the extreme observations due to its wider sphere of coverage than the bivariate-threshold-excess model.

Beyond the Arab Cold War brings the Yemen Civil War (1962–68) to the forefront of modern Middle East history, in a comprehensive account that features multilingual and multinational archives and oral histories. Throughout six years of major conflict Yemen sat at the crossroads of regional and international conflict as dozens of countries, international organizations, and individuals intervened in the local South Arabian civil war. Yemen was a showcase for a new era of UN and Red Cross peacekeeping, clandestine activity, Egypt’s counterinsurgency, and one of the first large-scale uses of poison gas since World War I. Events in Yemen were not dominated by a single power, nor were they sole products of US-Soviet or Saudi-Egyptian Arab Cold War rivalry. Rather, during the 1960s Yemen was transformed into an arena of global conflict whose ensuing chaos tore down the walls of centuries of religious rule and isolation and laid the groundwork for the next half century of Yemeni history. The end of the Yemen Civil War marked the end of both Egyptian President Nasser’s Arab nationalist colonial expansion and the British Empire in the Middle East, two of the most dominant regional forces. The legacy of the eventual northern tribal defeat and the compromised establishment of a weak and decentralized republic are at the core of modern-day conflicts in South Arabia.

The wonderful discovery of parietal figures in the entrance chamber of Church Hole by P. Bahn, P. Pettitt and S. Ripoll in 2003 invites us to study the elements that are linked to the topography of parietal figures made on ceilings in daylight. At Creswell, early excavations had revealed Magdalenian occupations. This association between habitation and parietal figures recalls other contexts, such as for example that of the Roc-aux-Sorciers at Angles-sur-l’Anglin (Vienne, France). This Magdalenian site contains a sculpted, engraved, and painted parietal assemblage which extends for more than 50 m at the foot of the cliff along the Anglin River. The upstream part of the site, called the Taillebourg cave, and which corresponds to a typical vestibule, yielded numerous decorated blocks that came from a major collapse of the cave’s ceiling; their refitting is currently under way. The downstream part, known as the abri Bourdois, which is a shallow overhang, at present contains a sculpted, engraved, and painted frieze, almost 20 m long, located on the vertical wall at the back of the rockshelter. Today the shelter’s ceiling has no traces of sculpture or engraving, but nothing confirms or rules out the presence of parietal figures here in the Magdalenian. After an analysis of the spatial organization of the figures in the abri Bourdois, we shall look at the elements at our disposal for understanding the figures on the ceiling of the Taillebourg cave in order to grasp whether the difference in location and the morphology of the supports had any impact on the spatial organization of the figures in the site as a whole. The site of the Roc-aux-Sorciers is located in Poitou-Charentes, in central-west France, in the commune of Angles-sur-l’Anglin. It was oficially classed as a historical monument on 18 January 1955. The Parisian basin is a geographical entity whose limits are easily defined by the Armorican massif, the Massif Central, the Vosges, the Ardennes, and the English Channel. Both Burgundy and Poitou are transitional areas. The Paris basin, a more restrictive term, corresponds according to some geologists (Cavelier and Lorenz 1987) essentially to the Tertiary ‘part’ of the basin: the Île de France and surroundings. The relief of the Parisian basin results from two sets of factors: tectonic and climatic. These have operated from Triassic times until the Pleistocene and have led to the development of a geographically simple whole in its gross structure and form. However, within this framework individual natural regions (or geotypes) may be recognized. The Parisian basin is frequently considered as a model for sedimentary basins, displaying as it does, a classic framework of sedimentary formations (Pomerol 1978; Cavelier and Pomerol 1979; Cavelier et al. 1979; Pomerol and Feugueur 1986; Debrand-Passard 1995). This is evident from the geological map of France, and on the related cross-section. Indeed, the section shows the superposition of strata in a subsiding area, with a maximal thickness (3,200 m) in the Brie country. This arrangement illustrates the geometric definition of the Parisian basin, an intracratonic basin, 600 km in diameter, limited towards the west by the Armorican massif, the south by the Massif Central, the east by the Vosges, and the north-east by the Ardenno-Rhenan massif. The following geological overview is based upon the previously mentioned studies and the geological time scale. However, the analysis of the evolution of these sedimentary areas from Triassic to Neogene shows that the area named as the ‘Parisian basin’ was included in successive palaeogeographies (which were strongly influenced by adjacent seas) and overflowed across the basement regions that now act as the limits of the basin. The chronological order of the geological formations involved in the evolution of the Parisian basin according to Robin et al. (2000) is used in the following text. During the Triassic, the future Parisian basin was a gulf of the German Sea. This sea transgressed westwards and reached the meridian of Paris during the Keuper.

Chapter 5 critically analyses and evaluates claims from two prominent teachers in the tradition, A.G. Mohan and Kausthub Desikachar (Krishnamacharya’s grandson), who both attempted to validate Krishnamacharya’s teachings about the serpent of kuṇḍalinī by putting it into a wider cultural context. Building upon the theoretical framework of Laurie Cozad (2004), this chapter will be the first published work showing how snakes are used in South Asian texts to represent something to be overcome: māyā (illusion / magic), avidyā (nescience / spiritual ignorance), ajñāna (nescience / spiritual ignorance), ahaṁkāra (ego), ahaṁmāna (egotism), abhimāna (erroneous self- conception), māna (pride), and moha (delusion) – the deadly poison of saṁsāra (rebirth). The chapter shows that this stream of South Asian thought, in which snakes represent something to be overcome, is consistent with Krishnamacharya’s use of the term kuṇḍalinī to represent a blockage to prāṇa. However, even when writers use snakes to represent something to be overcome in some contexts, it does not necessarily follow that they use kuṇḍalinī in the same way.

Pointing to the ambivalence of pharmakon as both poison and remedy, this chapter explores the long tradition of the curative or reparative powers of language, from the sophists through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa. The extended reading of Gorgias’sEncomium of Helen shows his dramatic performance as “the first pharmaceutical performance,” since as he talks he produces a new, eternally praiseworthy Helen. Likewise, the TRC is read as a form of psychoanalysis at the level of the nation which is inscribed within a tradition of discursive therapy that goes from sophistry to psychoanalysis, via catharsis. It is less concerned with truth as “the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” whether it be historical, judicial or individual, but in producing “enough truth” to build the rainbow nation.
