This paper presents a global and local tensor sparse approximation (GLTSA) model for removing the stripes in hyperspectral images (HSIs). HSIs can easily be degraded by unwanted stripes. Two intrinsic characteristics of the stripes are (1) global sparse distribution and (2) local smoothness along the stripe direction. Stripe-free hyperspectral images are smooth in spatial domain, with strong spectral correlation. Existing destriping approaches often do not fully investigate such intrinsic characteristics of the stripes in spatial and spectral domains simultaneously. Those methods may generate new artifacts in extreme areas, causing spectral distortion. The proposed GLTSA model applies two ℓ 0 -norm regularizers to the stripe components and along-stripe gradient to improve the destriping performance. Two ℓ 1 -norm regularizers are applied to the gradients of clean image in spatial and spectral domains. The double non-convex functions in GLTSA are converted to single non-convex function by mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). Experiment results demonstrate that GLTSA is effective and outperforms existing competitive matrix-based and tensor-based destriping methods in visual, as well as quantitative, evaluation measures.

Remote sensing images often suffer from stripe noise, which greatly degrades the image quality. Destriping of remote sensing images is to recover a good image from the image containing stripe noise. Since the stripes in remote sensing images have a directional characteristic (horizontal or vertical), the unidirectional total variation has been used to consider the directional information and preserve the edges. The remote sensing image contaminated by heavy stripe noise always has large width stripes and the pixels in the stripes have low correlations with the true pixels. On this occasion, the destriping process can be viewed as inpainting the wide stripe domains. In many works, high-order total variation has been proved to be a powerful tool to inpainting wide domains. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a variational destriping model that combines unidirectional total variation and second-order total variation regularization to employ the directional information and handle the wide stripes. In particular, the split Bregman iteration method is employed to solve the proposed model. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

It is well established that doped 2D antiferromagnets such as layered nickelates and certain cuprates can exhibit an ordered phase in which charge carriers are segregated to periodically-spaced domain walls separating antiferromagnetic domains. An open question concerns the nature of the state that is achieved when a stripe solid melts. Recent neutron scattering experiments on nickelates and cuprates indicate that melting leads to a stripe-liquid state; these results will be presented and discussed. The existence of the stripe-liquid phase in nickelates makes it plausible to interpret the mid-infrared absorption in terms of transitions from valence to mid-gap states associated with the stripes.

ABSTRACT6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS pentacene) was deposited on SiO2/Si substrates with Au stripes using electrostatic spray deposition (ESD). We observed that crystalline domains on the substrates were preferentially oriented. To elucidate this phenomenon, the correlation between the orientation direction and stripe direction was investigated by angle-dependent polarized Raman spectroscopy. Since the acene planes in TIPS pentacene take an edge-on orientation on the substrates, C-C ring stretch modes can be used to probe the in-plane orientation. We found that the long molecular axis of acene planes is inclined at about 50° or 110° from the stripe direction. This result suggests that the molecular orientation of the crystalline domains can be controlled by the stripes.

In the framework of the t-Jz we discuss localized spin polarons for various original hole arrangements in different spin backgrounds. According to the so-called string picture we assume that local destruction in the magnetic structure caused by hole motion tends to localize holes and acts on them as a kind of well potential. We concentrate on the case of the hole concentration 1/8 for which stripes are experimentally observed. We explicitly take into account interaction between holes and consider several possible configurations, that represent: holes homogeneously distributed in the antiferromagnetic background, hole pairs (which correspond to spin bipolarons) homogeneously distributed in the antiferromagnetic background, hole pairs which form the stripe structure in the perfect antiferromagnetic background, and eventually holes in stripes which separate antiferromagnetic domains with alternating direction of the staggered magnetization. Spin polarons are constructed by means of some computer algebra. It turns out that lowest eigenenergy has a state that represents a single hole polaron at the anti-phase domain wall (ADW). On the other hand, the stripe phase is exposed to keen competition from holes binding in the antiferromagnetic background and the energy margin by which stripes win is small.

The hairy (h) segmentation gene of Drosophila regulates segmental patterning of the early embryo, and is expressed in a set of anteroposterior stripes during the blastoderm stage. We have used a set of h gene deletions to study the h promoter and the developmental requirements for individual h stripes. The results confirm upstream regulation of h striping but indicate that expression in the anterodorsal head domain depends on sequences downstream of the two transcription initiation sites. Surprisingly, the two anterior-most h domains appear to be dispensable for head development and embryonic viability. One partial promoter deletion expresses ectopic h, leading to misexpression of other segmentation genes and embryonic pattern defects. We demonstrate that h affects patterning outside its apparent stripe domains, supporting a model in which primary pair-rule genes act as concentration-dependent transcriptional regulators, i.e. as local morphogens.

In this study, the formation of stripe domains in permalloy (NisoFe20) thin films was investigated mainly utilizing magnetic force microscopy. Stripe domains are a known phenomenon, which reduces the "softness" of magnetic material and introduces a significant source of noise when used in perpendicular magnetic media. For the particular setup mentioned in this report, a critical thickness for stripe domains initiation depended on the sputtering rate, the substrate temperature, and the film thickness. Beyond the stripe domain formation, an increase in the periodicity of highly ordered stripe domains was evident with increasing film thickness. Above a particular thickness, stripe domains periodicity decreased along with magnetic domain randomization. The results led to the inference that the perpendicular anisotropy responsible for the formation of stripe domains originated mainly from magnetostriction.

Les phases alpha'-Fe8N1-x et alpha''-Fe16N2 ont un fort potentiel d’application, en raison de leur anisotropie magnétocristalline uniaxiale et de leur grande aimantation à saturation. Cependant, les valeurs annoncées pour ces propriétés magnétiques restent sujettes à discussion. Les recherches menées au cours de cette thèse de doctorat ont été initiées dans le but de clarifier cette situation. L’élaboration des échantillons a principalement consisté en l’implantation ionique d’azote dans des couches minces de fer alpha épitaxiées sur ZnSe/GaAs (001). Entre autres, les effets de la température de la cible et de la fluence sur la structure cristalline des échantillons ont été analysés par diffractométrie des rayons X. La présence d’une anisotropie magnétique perpendiculaire a été mise en évidence dans les couches minces contenant les phases alpha'-Fe8N1-x ou alpha''-Fe16N2. La constante d’anisotropie a été évaluée par magnétométrie à échantillon vibrant et résonance ferromagnétique. À l’occasion de ces recherches, des domaines en rubans faibles ont été observés par microscopie à force magnétique dans certaines couches minces en Fe-N. Ceux-ci sont particulièrement rectilignes et des dislocations coin se trouvent au sein de leur structure périodique. Des études ont alors été réalisées dans le but de contrôler avec précision la réorientation des domaines en rubans et le déplacement des dislocations magnétiques, à l’aide d’un champ magnétique
The alpha'-Fe8N1-x and alpha''-Fe16N2 phases have a high potential of application, because of their uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy and their large saturation magnetization. However, the values announced for these magnetic properties remain a subject of discussion. The research conducted during this PhD thesis was initiated in order to clarify this situation. Sample making consisted mainly of nitrogen ion implantation into alpha-Fe thin films, epitaxially grown on ZnSe/GaAs (001). Among others, the effects of target temperature and fluence on the crystal structure of the samples were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry. The presence of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was demonstrated in the thin films containing the alpha'-Fe8N1-x and alpha''-Fe16N2 phases. The anisotropy constant was evaluated by vibrating sample magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance. In this research, weak stripe domains were observed by magnetic force microscopy in some Fe-N thin films. These are particularly straight and edge dislocations are found within their periodic structure. Studies were then carried out to precisely control the reorientation of the stripe domains and the displacement of the magnetic dislocations, using a magnetic field

Des distributions inhomogènes de l’aimantation existent lorsque le matériau n’est pas uniforme, ou lorsqu’une texture magnétique se forme dans un matériau homogène. Dans les deux cas, les symétries brisées modifient l’excitation et la propagation des ondes de spin et donnent lieu à des phénomènes surprenants. Dans ce contexte, nous avons étudié la propagation des ondes de spin dans une bicouche avec un contraste de l’aimantation de saturation dans la configuration Damon-Eshbach. Nous avons trouvé, à l’aide de simulations et expériences (spectroscopie d'ondes de spin propagatives et diffusion de Brouillon), que le système montre une très forte non-réciprocité en fréquence qui peut être utilisée pour réaliser une diode magnonique. Par ailleurs, nous avons étudié la dynamique des ondes de spin dans des couches minces qui présentent des domaines magnétiques en rubans faibles. Nous avons montré que ces ondes de spin peuvent être interprétées comme une extension des modes de Damon-Eshbach dans l’état saturé, qui s’adaptent à la brisure de symétrie. Nous avons également montré que les deux modes d’ondes de spin de plus basse fréquence correspondent aux modes de Goldstone et Higgs de la texture en rubans. Inhomogeneous magnetization distributions may exist because the magnetic parameters are distributed, or because magnetic textures nucleate in homogenous materials. In both cases, the broken symmetries affect the spin-wave excitation and propagation, leading to a number of intriguing phenomena. In this context, we have studied the propagation of spin waves in a bilayer with a saturation magnetization contrast for the Damon-Eshbach configuration. We have found, by means of simulations and experiments (Propagating Spin Wave Spectroscopy and Brillouin Light Scattering), that this system shows a strong frequency non-reciprocity which can be used for the realization of a spin-wave diode. We have also studied the spin-wave dynamics in thin films which exhibit weak magnetic stripe domains. We have shown how these modes can be interpreted as an extension of the Damon-Eshbach spectrum of the saturated state, which adapts to the symmetry breaking. Furthermore, we have identified the two lowest frequency modes to the Goldstone- and Higgs- modes of the stripe texture. These results were confirmed by Brillouin Light Scattering and Ferromagnetic Resonance experiments

The domain decomposition strategies proposed in this thesis are efficient preconditioning techniques with good parallelism properties for the discrete systems which arise from the finite element approximation of symmetric elliptic boundary value problems in two and three-dimensional Euclidean spaces. For two-dimensional problems, two new domain decomposition preconditioners are introduced, such that the condition number of the preconditioned system is bounded independently of the size of the subdomains and the finite element mesh size. First, the alternate strip-based (ASB2) preconditioner is based on the partitioning of the domain into a finite number of nonoverlapping strips without interior vertices. This preconditioner is obtained from direct solvers inside the strips and a direct fast Poisson solver on the edges between strips, and contains two stages. At each stage the strips change such that the edges between strips at one stage are perpendicular on the edges between strips at the other stage. Next, the alternate strip-based substructuring (ASBS2) preconditioner is a Schur complement solver for the case of a decomposition with multiple nonoverlapping subdomains and interior vertices. The subdomains are assembled into nonoverlapping strips such that the vertices of the strips are on the boundary of the given domain, the edges between strips align with the edges of the subdomains and their union contains all of the interior vertices of the initial decomposition. This preconditioner is produced from direct fast Poisson solvers on the edges between strips and the edges between subdo- mains inside strips, and also contains two stages such that the edges between strips at one stage are perpendicular on the edges between strips at the other stage. The extension to three-dimensional problems is via solvers on slices of the domain.

The finite strip method (FSM) is a very efficient numerical method employed for performing the structural analysis of slender structures, such as cable-stayed bridges; the strip discretization of the model allows for the usage of a lower number of degrees of freedom, in comparison with the finite element method (FEM), while, as it will be discussed in the current research, the results obtained from both methods are in relatively good agreement. Moreover, to address the latest developments in the area of smart construction materials used for long-span bridges, the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites were implemented for the bridge deck modeling, as part of a hybrid composite FRP cable-stayed bridge, and an extend laminate integrated finite strip method (LFSM) was applied for estimating the static structural performance of the hybrid composite FRP long-span cable-stayed bridge under several concentrated and uniformly distributed loadings. The free vibrations analysis was conducted for the Kap Shui Mun Cable-stayed Bridge model, and the natural frequencies were compared with the ones obtained from an FE model of the same bridge. One of the advantages of using the integrated finite strip method is that number of vibration modes, which can be included in the dynamic analysis when the effect of a sweeping sinus and a seismic loading are investigated when a conventional FE analysis would fail to converge. The outcomes of this research will set the stage for the hybrid long-span cable-stayed bridges modeling by the laminate integrated finite strip method (LFSM) which is more efficient and straightforward than the finite element analysis, for performing the static, free vibration, time domain, and frequency domain analyses.

Seakeeping analysis of the Zumwalt-Class destroyer was carried out in the framework of linear strip theory and potential flow. First, the problem was formulated and solved analytically. Second, a program called Ship Motions Analyzer (SMA) was written in MATLABTM to carry out the seakeeping analysis for regular waves in a discretized frequency range. SMA calculates sectional added mass and damping coefficients first. Then, it calculates excitation forces and moments acting on a ship advancing at constant forward speed with arbitrary heading for sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw modes of motion. Finally, SMA evaluates Response Amplitude Operators (RAO's) in the same modes of motion. In addition, it also includes a subroutine which evaluates steady drift forces acting on a ship in the plane of undisturbed free surface. The added mass and damping coefficients of a fully submerged heaving circle and a semi-circle in heave and sway were calculated to validate the results of SMA. The results were compared to the results of Vugst [1] and Frank [2]. They match each other exactly. In addition, the magnitudes of heave and pitch excitation force and moment, and RAO's in the same modes of motions were calculated. The results agree with the theory. Finally, added resistance of Mariner type ship was calculated by SMA to compare the results to the ones given by Salvasen [3] and to validate the calculations. These results are also in very good agreement with the available computational and experimental results.

This paper outlines the theory, development, validation, and some results of a quadratic strip theory method to predict the global structural response of the KRISO hull geometry due to regular waves in the time-domain. The method attempts to capture nonlinear effects of the dynamic problem due to time-varying underwater hull volume imparted by waves and vessel motions. These effects are formulated by drawing a relationship between the coefficients, 𝐴33, 𝐵33, and 𝐶33 and the sectional draft, 𝑇𝑠. Additional nonlinearities are introduced by allowing for a flexible hull girder, and the inclusion of structural damping. Validation is facilitated by running test computations and comparing the linear and nonlinear results to segmented model test data. It is found that the predicted results are validated by the model data, and that nonlinear effects account for a significant increase in predicted bending moment.

A sharp-interface model based on the linear constrained theory of laminates identifies eight distinct rank-2 periodic patterns in tetragonal ferroelectrics. While some of the periodic solutions, such as the herringbone and stripe patterns are commonly observed, others such as the checkerboard pattern consisting of repeating polarization vortices are rarely seen in experiments. The linear constrained theory predicts compatible domain arrangements, but neglects gradient effects at domain walls and misfit stresses due to junctions of domains. Here, we employ a phase-field model to test the stability of the periodic domain patterns with in-plane polarizations, under periodic boundary conditions which impose zero average stress and electric field. The results indicate that domain patterns containing strong disclinations are of high energy and typically unstable in the absence of external stresses or electric fields. The study also provides insight into the internal stresses developed in the various domain patterns.

Over time, the HTTP Protocol has undergone significant evolution. HTTP was the internet's foundation for data communication. When network security threats became prevalent, HTTPS became a widely accepted technology for assisting in a domain’s defense. HTTPS supported two security protocols: secure socket layer (SSL) and transport layer security (TLS). Additionally, the HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) protocol was included to strengthen the HTTPS protocol. Numerous cyber-attacks occurred in the United States, and many of these attacks could have been avoided simply by implementing domains with the most up-to-date HTTP security mechanisms. This study seeks to accomplish two objectives: 1. Determine the degree to which US-related domains are configured optimally for HTTP security protocol setup; 2. Create a generic scoring system for a domain's network security based on the following factors: SSL version, TLS version, and presence of HSTS to easily determine where a domain stands. We found through our analysis and scoring system incorporation that US-related domains showed a positive trend for secure network protocol setup, but there is still room for improvement. In order to safeguard unwanted cyber-attacks, current HTTP domains need to be extensively investigated to identify if they possess security-related components. Due to the infrequent occurrence of HSTS in the evaluated domains, the computer science community necessitates further HSTS education.

A multi-strip numerical method, combining solution of the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with a finite-element structural dynamics response, has been developed to analyze the flow-structure interaction of long, flexible risers. This solution methodology combines a number of individual hydrodynamic simulations corresponding to individual axial strips along the riser section with a full 3D structural analysis to predict overall VIV loads and displacements. The hydrodynamic loading for each riser strip is derived from a 2D finite-volume discretization of the governing RANS equations which is applicable to both single and multiple riser configurations. The entire flow-structure solution procedure is carried out in the time domain via a loose coupling strategy, such that the hydrodynamic loads from each riser strip are summed to obtain the overall loading along the span of each riser. This loading is then used to integrate forward a single time-step in the riser equations of motion to obtain an updated riser displacement profile. Closure of the coupled flow-structure method is achieved by updating the riser displacements for each of the corresponding hydrodynamic strips in the next time-step integration. The developed multi-strip method is applied to a single bare riser subjected to both uniform and shear current profiles. The flow conditions and riser configuration were chosen to match the Marintek rotating rig experiments, and comparisons between experimental and numerical results are presented for several flow configurations and axial tensions. In addition, a parametric study is presented using 16, 32, and 64 hydrodynamic strips for a given flow configuration to ascertain the sensitivity of the results to the number of strips chosen.

Abstract Some phenomena of spray dynamics of water mist for fire suppression are studied numerically. The transport of fine mist sprays is very different than that of the typical large water sprinkler drops because water mist may have a better ability to follow the air streams and to penetrate into hidden locations behind obstructions or through opening slots where fire occurs. First, the free falling of fine droplet in stagnant air is examined to reveal the time delays and change of volumetric number density of the spectrum of droplets. Then, the 2-D numerical simulations of a two-phase gas droplet flow based on Navier-Stokes equations are performed to study the motion of droplets around a rectangular strip obstruction. The deposition of the droplets on the strip and the flow around the strip are investigated. The collection efficiency on the strip is computed numerically as a function of the inertial impaction parameter. In addition, flow over a single strip in a domain with various widths is also examined to reveal the characteristics of the flow over an array of repeated strips. No major variation on the collection efficiency with respect to the single strip is observed if the blockage fraction (B), which is the fraction of the size of strip to the total width of the flow domain, is less than about 0.33. The penetration efficiency of the mist droplets through an array of slots can be evaluated based on the collection efficiency and the geometric fraction of the strip to the flow domain configuration.

A structure consisting of quasi-laminar and turbulent regions in a stripe pattern, which can be found in a transitional plane channel flow, is called ‘turbulent stripe’. In this work, its formation from a turbulent spot has been investigated using a direct numerical simulation in a relatively large-scale computational domain of Lx × Ly × Lz = 731.4δ × 2δ × 365.7δ. We found that a spot developed into the turbulent stripes, as the spot split in the spanwise direction and took in the form of V-shape. Quasi-laminar and turbulent regions coexist inside the spot and each region became multiple V-shape. Several branching turbulent regions expanded from the edge of the spot and parallel to each other obliquely to the streamwise direction with an angle of about 30°. It was also found that the branching turbulent region gave rise to oblique waves at their edges.

Research problem: Bread wheat (Triticumaestivum) provides approximately 20% of the calories and proteins consumed by humankind. As the world population continues to increase, it is necessary to improve wheat yields, increase grain quality, and minimize the losses produced by biotic and abiotic stresses. Stripe rust, caused by Pucciniastriiformisf. sp. tritici(Pst), is one of the most destructive diseases of wheat. The new pathogen races are more virulent and aggressive than previous ones and have produced large economic losses. A rich source for stripe-rust resistance genes (Yr) was found in wild emmer wheat populations from Israel. Original Project goals: Our long term goal is to identify, map, clone, characterize and deploy in breeding, novel wild emmer Yr genes, and combine them with multiple beneficial traits. The current study was aiming to map and clone YrG303 and Yr15, located on chromosome 1BS and combine them with drought resistance and grain quality genes. Positional cloning of YrG303/Yr15: Fine mapping of these genes revealed that YrG303 is actually allelic to Yr15. Fine genetic mapping using large segregating populations resulted in reduction of the genetic interval spanning Yr15 to less than 0.1 cM. Physical mapping of the YrG303/Yr15 locus was based on the complete chromosome 1BS physical map of wheat constructed by our group. Screening of 1BS BAC library with Yr15 markers revealed a long BAC scaffold covering the target region. The screening of T. dicoccoidesaccession-specific BAC library with Yr15 markers resulted in direct landing on the target site. Sequencing of T. dicoccoidesBAC clones that cover the YrG303/Yr15 locus revealed a single candidate gene (CG) with conserved domains that may indicate a role in disease resistance response. Validation of the CG was carried out using EMS mutagenesis (loss-of- function approach). Sequencing of the CG in susceptible yr15/yrG303 plants revealed three independent mutants that harbour non-functional yr15/yrG303 alleles within the CG conserved domains, and therefore validated its function as a Pstresistance gene. Evaluation of marker-assisted-selection (MAS) for Yr15. Introgressions of Yr15 into cultivated wheat are widely used now. Recently, we have shown that DNA markers linked to Yr15 can be used as efficient tools for introgression of Yr15 into cultivated wheat via MAS. The developed markers were consistent and polymorphic in all 34 tested introgressions and are the most recommended markers for the introgression of Yr15. These markers will facilitate simultaneous selection for multiple Yr genes and help to avoid escapees during the selection process. Engineering of improved chromosome 1BS that harbors multiple beneficial traits. We have implemented the knowledge and genetic resources accumulated in this project for the engineering of 1B "super-chromosome" that harbors multiple beneficial traits. We completed the generation of a chromosome including the rye 1RS distal segment associated with improved drought tolerance with the Yr gene, Yr15, and the strong gluten allele 7Bx-over-expressor (7Bxᴼᴱ). We have completed the introgression of this improved chromosome into our recently released variety Patwin-515HP and our rain fed variety Kern, as well as to our top breeding lines UC1767 and UC1745. Elucidating the mechanism of resistance exhibited by Yr36 (WKS1). The WHEAT KINASE START1 (WKS1) resistance gene (Yr36) confers partial resistance to Pst. We have shown that wheat plants transformed with WKS1 transcript are resistant to Pst. WKS1 is targeted to the chloroplast where it phosphorylates the thylakoid-associatedascorbateperoxidase (tAPX) and reduces its ability to detoxify peroxides. Based on these results, we propose that the phosphorylation of tAPX by WKS1 reduces the ability of the cells to detoxify ROS and contributes to cell death. Distribution and diversity of WKS in wild emmer populations. We have shown that WKS1 is present only in the southern distribution range of wild emmer in the Fertile Crescent. Sequence analysis revealed a high level of WKS1 conservation among wild emmer populations, in contrast to the high level of diversity observed in NB-LRR genes. This phenomenon shed some light on the evolution of genes that confer partial resistance to Pst. Three new WKS1 haplotypes displayed a resistance response, suggesting that they can be useful to improve wheat resistance to Pst. In summary, we have improved our understanding of cereals’ resistance mechanisms to rusts and we have used that knowledge to develop improved wheat varieties.

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici is one of the most destructive fungal diseases of wheat. Virulent races that appeared within the last decade caused drastic cuts in yields. The incorporation of genetic resistance against this pathogen is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to this problem. However, race specific seedling resistance genes provide only a temporary solution because fungal populations rapidly evolve to overcome this type of resistance. In contrast, high temperature adult plant (HTAP) resistance genes provide a broad spectrum resistance that is partial and more durable. The cloning of the first wheat HTAP stripe rust resistance gene Yr36 (Science 2009, 323:1357), funded by our previous (2007-2010) BARD grant, provided us for the first time with an entry point for understanding the mechanism of broad spectrum resistance. Two paralogous copies of this gene are tightly linked at the Yr36 locus (WKS1 and WKS2). The main objectives of the current study were to characterize the Yr36 (WKS) resistance mechanism and to identify and characterize alternative WKSgenes in wheat and wild relatives. We report here that the protein coded by Yr36, designated WKS1, that has a novel architecture with a functional kinase and a lipid binding START domain, is localized to chloroplast. Our results suggest that the presence of the START domain may affect the kinase activity. We have found that the WKS1 was over-expressed on leaf necrosis in wheat transgenic plants. When the isolated WKS1.1 splice variant transcript was transformed into susceptible wheat it conferred resistance to stripe rust, but the truncated variant WKS1.2 did not confer resistance. WKS1.1 and WKS1.2 showed different lipid binding profiling. WKS1.1 enters the chloroplast membrane, while WKS1.2 is only attached outside of the chloroplast membrane. The ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity of the recombinant protein of TmtAPXwas found to be reduced by WKS1.1 protein in vitro. The WKS1.1 mature protein in the chloroplast is able to phosphorylate TmtAPXprotein in vivo. WKS1.1 induced cell death by suppressing APX activity and reducing the ability of the cell to detoxify reactive oxygen. The decrease of APX activity reduces the ability of the plant to detoxify the reactive H2O2 and is the possible mechanism underlying the accelerated cell death observed in the transgenic plants overexpressing WKS1.1 and in the regions surrounding a stripe rust infection in the wheat plants carrying the natural WKS1.1 gene. WKS2 is a nonfunctional paralog of WKS1 in wild emmer wheat, probably due to a retrotransposon insertion close to the alternative splicing site. In some other wild relatives of wheat, such as Aegilops comosa, there is only one copy of this gene, highly similar to WKS2, which is lucking the retrotransposon insertion. WKS2 gene present in wheat and WKS2-Ae from A. showed a different pattern of alternative splice variants, regardless of the presence of the retrotransposon insertion. Susceptible Bobwhite transformed with WKS2-Ae (without retrotansposon insertion in intron10), which derived from Aegilops comosaconferred resistance to stripe rust in wheat. The expression of WKS2-Ae in transgenic plants is up-regulated by temperature and pathogen infection. Combination of WKS1 and WKS2-Ae shows improved stripe rust resistance in WKS1×WKS2-Ae F1 hybrid plants. The obtained results show that WKS1 protein is accelerating programmed cell death observed in the regions surrounding a stripe rust infection in the wheat plants carrying the natural or transgenic WKS1 gene. Furthermore, characterization of the epistatic interactions of Yr36 and Yr18 demonstrated that these two genes have additive effects and can therefore be combined to increase partial resistance to this devastating pathogen of wheat. These achievements may have a broad impact on wheat breeding efforts attempting to protect wheat yields against one of the most devastating wheat pathogen.

Eminent Domain is the power of the government or quasi-government entities to take private or public property interests through condemnation. Eminent Domain has been a significant issue since 1879 when, in the case of Boom Company v. Patterson, the Supreme Court first acknowledged that the power of eminent domain may be delegated by state legislatures to agencies and non-governmental entities. Thus, the era of legal takings began. Though an important legal dispute then, more recently eminent domain has blossomed into an enduring contentious social and political problem throughout the United States. The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution states, “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Thus, in the wake of the now infamous decision in Kelo v. City of New London, where the Court upheld the taking of private property for purely economic benefit as a “public use,” the requirement of “just compensation” stands as the primary defender of constitutionally protected liberty under the federal constitution. In response to Kelo, many state legislatures passed a variety of eminent domain reforms specifically tailoring what qualifies as a public use and how just compensation should be calculated. Texas landowners recognize that the state’s population is growing at a rapid pace. There is an increasing need for more land and resources such as energy and transportation. But, private property rights are equally important, especially in Texas, and must be protected as well. Eminent domain and the condemnation process is not a willing buyer and willing seller transition; it is a legally forced sale. Therefore, it is necessary to consider further improvements to the laws that govern the use of eminent domain so Texas landowners can have more assurance that this process is fair and respectful of their private property rights when they are forced to relinquish their land. This report compiles statutes and information from the other forty-nine states to illustrate how they address key eminent domain issues. Further, this report endeavors to provide a neutral third voice in Texas to strike a more appropriate balance between individual’s property rights and the need for increased economic development. This report breaks down eminent domain into seven major topics that, in addition to Texas, seemed to be similar in many of the other states. These categories are: (1) Awarding of Attorneys’ Fee; (2) Compensation and Valuation; (3) Procedure Prior to Suit; (4) Condemnation Procedure; (5) What Cannot be Condemned; (6) Public Use & Authority to Condemn; and (7) Abandonment. In analyzing these seven categories, this report does not seek to advance a particular interest but only to provide information on how Texas law differs from other states. This report lays out trends seen across other states that are either similar or dissimilar to Texas, and additionally, discusses interesting and unique laws employed by other states that may be of interest to Texas policy makers. Our research found three dominant categories which tend to be major issues across the country: (1) the awarding of attorneys’ fees; (2) the valuation and measurement of just compensation; and (3) procedure prior to suit.

The Laberge Group was deposited during the Early to Middle Jurassic in a marginal marine environment, in the northern Canadian Cordillera. It occurs as a narrow, elongated siliciclastic unit along more than 600 km of strike length, overlapping the Intermontane terranes of southern Yukon and northwestern British Columbia. The Laberge Group was deposited on the Late Triassic Stuhini and Lewes River groups, a volcano-plutonic complex of the Stikine terrane (Stikinia), and, locally, the Kutcho Arc. It is overlain by Middle Jurassic to Cretaceous clastic units. The variations in clast composition and detrital zircon populations among these units indicate major changes in depositional environment, basin extent, and sources during the latest Triassic to Middle Jurassic. Detrital zircon populations are dominated by near contemporary Stuhini-Lewes River arc grains, consistent with dissection of an active arc. Detrital rutile and muscovite data show rapid cooling and exhumation of metamorphic rocks during the Early Jurassic. Thermochronological data indicate that basin thermal evolution was domainal, with at least five regional temperature-time histories.

Increased automation for aircraft systems holds the promise to increase safety, precision, and availability for manned and unmanned aircraft. Specifically, established aviation segments, such as general aviation and light sport, could utilize increased automation to make significant progress towards solving safety and piloting difficulties that have plagued them for some time. Further, many emerging market segments, such as urban air mobility and small unmanned (e.g., small parcel delivery with drones) have a strong financial incentive to develop increased automation to relieve the pilot workload, and/or replace in-the-loop pilots for most situations. Before these advances can safely be made, automation technology must be shown to be reliable, available, accurate, and correct within acceptable limits based on the level of risk these functions may create. However since inclusion of these types of systems is largely unprecedented at this level of aviation, what constitutes these required traits (and at what level they must be proven to) requires development as well. Progress in this domain will likely be captured and disseminated in the form of best practices and technical standards created with collaboration from regulatory and industry groups. This work intends to inform those standards producers, along with the system designers, with the goal of facilitating growth in aviation systems toward safe, methodical, and robust inclusion of these new technologies. Produced by members of the manned and unmanned small aircraft community, represented by ASTM task group AC 377, this work strives to suggest and describe certain fundamental principles, or “pillars”, of complex aviation systems development, which are applicable to the design and architectural development of increased automation for aviation systems.
