In this paper, we describe the methods used to estimate the global burden of stroke for the GBD 2013 study. Pathologic subtypes of stroke are modeled separately for two mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories: (1) ischemic stroke and (2) hemorrhagic and other non-ischemic strokes. Acute and chronic strokes are estimated separately. The GBD 2013 study has incorporated large amounts of new data on stroke death rates, incidence and case fatality.

Abstract Introduction Regular blood transfusion therapy is the standard care for secondary prevention of strokes in sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite regular blood transfusion therapy approximately 45% of the children with strokes will have progressive neurological disease (overt strokes or new silent cerebral infarcts) with an incidence of overt strokes of 3.2 events/100 patient-years (95% confidence interval, 1.3-6.5) (Hulbert, Blood 2011). Limited additional therapeutic options exist for these patients. Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) is a neurosurgical procedure to improve cerebral

ABSTRACTBackground:Lacunar stroke is a small (<2 cm) infarction that accounts for approximately 20% of all strokes. While a third of all stroke patients experience depressive symptoms, the prevalence of depression in the lacunar stroke patient population is unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effect of lacunar stroke and deep white matter disease on depressive symptoms. Methods:A systematic search of electronic databases was conducted, resulting in the inclusion of 12 studies. Introduction: Heart disease and cancer are the top two killers in the world, but strokes are the third most common cause of death worldwide. Furthermore, one-third of stroke victims are left with long-term disabilities. An Ischemic-strokes account for 80% of all strokes, while hemorrhagic strokes account for 20% of all strokes. Aim of this study: The main aim of this study is comparing the haemorrhagic and ischemic stroke patients – analysis of mortality, clinical development and relationship between stroke variables. Abstract Background TIA and stroke, both ischemic and hemorrhagic, may complicate Fabry disease at young-adult age and be the first manifestation that comes to the clinician’s attention. No definite indications have yet been elaborated to guide neurologists in Fabry disease diagnostics. In current practice, it is usually sought in case of cryptogenic strokes (while Fabry-related strokes can also occur by classical pathogenic mechanisms) or through screening programs in young cerebrovascular populations. Background. In Ukraine, mortality rates from cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) are 10–17 % higher than in Europe. The number of registered cases of strokes is increasing in the world and this tendency is expected to continue in the coming years. One of the factors affecting epidemiological indicators is military conflicts. This mostly applies to low- and middle-income countries due to the complexity of providing medical care. Large studies testify to the negative impact of military actions on the morbidity and mortality from CVD, a change in the structure of strokes due to an increase in the prop

The authors aimed to investigate the natural course of hemodynamically stable cases of adult MMD, with the analysis of stroke risk factors. METHODS Two hundred forty-one patients were included in this retrospective study. One hundred sixty-six (68.9%) were female, and mean age (± SD) at first visit was 41.3 ± 12.0 years (range 18–69 years). Unilateral involvement was identified in 33 patients, and 19 patients (7.9%) had a family history of MMD. According to the clinical presentations, pati

Stroke generates significant healthcare expenses and it is also a social and economic burden. The carotid artery atherosclerotic plaque instability is responsible for a third of all embolic strokes. The degree of stenosis has been deliberately used to justify carotid artery interventions in thousands of patients worldwide. However, the annual risk of stroke in asymptomatic carotid artery disease is low. Plaque morphology and its kinetics have gained ground to explain cerebrovascular and retinal embolic events. The most severe and disabling among various types of cerebrovascular accidents are hemorrhages. High mortality in hemorrhagic stroke is due to the possible development of a generalized convulsive syndrome, accompanied by respiratory failure; a cascade of irreversible biological reactions (dislocation syndrome with wedging, ventricular system hemotamponade with the formation of acute obstructive hydrocephalus); the development of complications associated with forced immobilization of the patient or connecting to a ventilator. Background Homocysteine and folate have been suggested to have opposite effects on the risk of stroke, although the results are controversial. Design and methods The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of serum total homocysteine (tHcy) and serum folate levels on the risk of stroke in a prospective cohort study. The subjects were 1015 men aged 46–64 years and free of prior stroke, examined in 1991–1993 in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor (KIHD) Study. Results At baseline the mean serum tHcy concentration was 10.9 μmol/l (SD 3.4). During an average follow-up time of 9.
