The geographic characteristic of plant macroevolution is manifested in general in neither even, nor random distribution of the archaic and advanced representatives of a higher taxon in its range. The explanatory concepts proposed are still contradictory. Water storage has been commonly cited as an important function of orchid pseudobulbs, and it is reasonable to assume that orchids which utilize crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis have larger pseudobulbs than those of C3 orchid taxa, because these foliar (or stem) structures may reflect another type of succulent tissue in CAM plants. On the other hand, it is equally plausible that C3 orchids have larger pseudobulbs, as they lack succulent tissue, as well as the water-conservative CAM pathway. Patterns of flowering and pollination visit of Carpobrotus spp. were examined to determine the hybridization potential between the introduced succulent perennial Carpobrotus edulis and its native congener, Carpobrotus chilensis, in coastal California. Both species flower from March to July and both are visited by the same Thysanoptera and Coleoptera taxa. Flowers from hybrid-appearing individuals were intermediate in corolla diameter. Emasculation and bagging experiments suggest that C. edulis and hybrid morphotypes have facultative agamospermia, whereas C. chilensis has facultative self-ferti

The complex systematics of the genus Sedum, the difficulties of its classification and the ambiguity of the concrete identification of the taxa brought about the need to implement a measurement system adaptable to field conditions, so as to facilitate the accuracy of data collection, avoiding the etiolation of samples and, therefore, the deterioration of the morphological structures subject to analysis. Thus, our study describes a digitization of the classic method of making measurements using millimeter paper, thus facilitating the subsequent statistical processing of quantifiable values. Dep

Most perennials are classified as xerophytes, and have structures that limit water loss during dry weather, provide structural support to help prevent cell collapse during dry periods or store water in photosynthetic tissues. Some of these traits are also found in sclerophyllous plants and traits that may have developed due to evolution of taxa on nutrient poor soils may also benefit the plants under arid conditions. Orthophyllum, were considered to be distributed across almost the entire Northern Hemisphere. However, in the mid-twentieth century these taxa were recircumscribed resulting in their exclusion from the North American bryoflora and restricting their distributions to Asia and Europe, and in the case of Plagiothecium nemorale s.l., also North Africa.
